Yellowcard Reunite for 20th Anniversary ‘Ocean Avenue’ U.S. Tour Dates
" If I could find you now, things would get better ." Well, Yellowcard fans, you'll be able to find the band back on the road, reuniting for their first concert tour in over six years, and it comes while supporting the 20th anniversary of the band's breakout album, Ocean Avenue .
The four-piece of Ryan Key, Sean Mackin, Ryan Mendez and Josh Portman first got together last fall, playing a headlining slot at Chicago's Riot Fest. From there, they felt there was some unfinished business and here we are in 2023 with the band celebrating the 20th anniversary of Ocean Avenue .
“Announcing a Yellowcard tour is something I never thought we would get to do again, much less, a tour with bands of this caliber made up of such amazing people and good friends,” says Key. “Being given the opportunity to play music together again is truly a gift that we are not taking for granted. We are going to make these shows extremely special for all of the fans who we have missed so much these last six years.”
Ocean Avenue was Yellowcard's fourth studio album, but it gave them their big break thanks to the title track, as well as the singles "Way Away," "Only One" and "Believe." The album has been certified double platinum in the U.S.
The tour gets underway July 5 in Baltimore, Md., with dates keeping the group on the road through Aug. 8 in Denver. Joining them on the run will be a wide variety of support acts. Mayday Parade, Story of the Year, Anberlin, The Wild Life and Emo Night Brooklyn will all spend time warming audiences up on select dates. See the full itinerary and who is playing with Yellowcard on what night in the tour listing toward the bottom of this post.
Tickets and VIP packages will be offered via a Yellowcard presale starting this Wednesday (Feb. 15) at 10AM local time. Additional presales will also be offered in the lead up to the Friday (Feb. 17) general public on sale, which also starts at 10AM local time. Visit Ticketmaster for your ticketing details.

Yellowcard singer says band leans into '90s alt-rock influences on tour headed here
'it's just jedi time now,' singer says about the pop-punk band playing for biggest crowds yet.
BURGETTSTOWN ― Appreciating the adage "know your audience," multiplatinum pop-punk band Yellowcard overhauled its setlist for a summer tour supporting alternative rockers Third Eye Blind.
"We made the setlist very deliberate in its direction, thinking most of the people at these shows are going to be Third Eye Blind fans," Yellowcard lead singer Ryan Key said. "They're going to be our age or older and be '90s kids like us that came up on bands like Third Eye Blind."
So, Yellowcard dug deeply into its discography to choose songs "where we really leaned into that '90s alternative side of ourselves, and our very earliest inspirations for making music. Obviously, the pop-punk and more punk-leaning music defined the sound of Yellowcard in the end," Key said. "But we didn't pick up guitars because of punk records; we picked up guitars because of Nirvana and Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam and just that absolute rock revolution that came at the end of that decade. We put some of those songs that come from that place of inspiration into the show thinking it might turn heads of some Third Eye Blind fans who've never heard of Yellowcard, or if they have, they've heard 'Ocean Avenue' and by the time we get to the end of the show they're like 'Oh this band,' you know? But I think it's working. Honestly. "
Speaking by Zoom from a Seattle hotel room, in front of his mobile streaming and gaming center, Key said the opening two nights of the tour went great, and he expects more as the Yellowcard-Third Eye Blind tour advances to places like Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, on July 5; The Pavilion at Star Lake in Burgettstown, Pa., on July 9; BankNH Pavilion in Gilford, N.H. on July 11; Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Mass., on July 13; PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, N.J., on July 14; Broadview Stage, Saratoga Springs, N.Y. on July 16; Jones Beach Theater at Wantagh, N.Y., on July 18 and Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md., on July 19.
"You can see this isn't going to be a big, traditional everybody's-slamming-into-each other, running-around-like-crazy Yellowcard show," Key said. "People are there to just vibe and sing along and groove to the music. And so our setlist is very mid-tempo. It's very rock-leaning. And I think people are recognizing the musicality of these songs. And that's kind of what we hoped. Again, we're only two shows in, but it was definitely a feeling of, 'Oh, this was the right choice.' The right songs to pick."

Before Third Eye Blind fans get their fill of radio hits "Semi-Charmed Life," "Jumper" and "How's It Gonna Be," they'll hear Yellowcard cuts like "Cut Me, Mick," "Keeper," "The Hurt is Gone" and the title track to last year's "Childhood Eyes" EP.
That 2023 EP ends with "The Places We'll Go," a collaboration with Dashboard Confessional's Chris Carrabba, where Key sings, "Last year's 20 years passed/it's wild how fast/Were we ever that young?"
That same year, Yellowcard did a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of its breakout and acclaimed "Ocean Avenue" album, and indeed, it seems wild to Key how fast that time seemed to sweep past.
"It's a really interesting concept in general to still be doing Yellowcard because we thought Yellowcard was over. And it's very much not over," Key said. "There seems to be a lot of life left in this band."
Yellowcard took a hiatus in 2008-2010 and broke up with an advertised farewell show in 2017 before reuniting in 2022.
"We had just reached a place in the mid-2010s where we were feeling pretty beaten down and were touring nine or 10 months a year and not really getting the results we were hoping to get and it was just exhausting," Key said. "And people were starting families and were making less money year after year. It felt wrong. It didn't feel like we were climbing anymore − that we were moving in any kind of direction at all − but sort of treading water, or if anything backsliding and sinking a bit. So, this is all just wild to us to be doing this. Last summer was the biggest tour that we've ever done in our entire career. We were selling 6,000-8,000 tickets in some markets and it was absolutely absurd. We'd never seen numbers like that. And here we are again the next summer on another amphitheater and arena tour."
As for those 20 years of swiftly passing time he lyrically alluded to, "I don't feel old and tired by the 20 years. I feel pretty energized and like I'm right where I'm supposed to be and making music with Yellowcard again. But where I think you feel it is looking back at the legacy of the band and realize all these people filling out these massive venues still love and care for Yellowcard and that makes you realize how long you've been at this. In the best way."
The five years spent finding his own way during the Yellowcard breakup "was an incredible growing and learning experience," Key said. "And then coming back to it and all these incredible opportunities and biggest shows we've ever played, I'm really able to reflect on my journey and finally have a true sense of gratitude and understanding for how much weight this carries. I try not to be too preachy because everyone has to go through their own experience but if it makes sense I do like to share my journey, my experience and that it's never too late to work on yourself. If someone had a bad experience with me 20 years ago, I'm not going to be able to fix that, but I can make sure no one has a bad experience with me now."
It's been a wild ride, "with honestly, more downs than ups," Key said. "Out in the public eye it's been incredible, and yes, we're so grateful for the opportunities we've had, but behind closed doors there's been a lot more darkness than light. And now this chapter we're in truly is just an all-light side. It's just Jedi time now. The energy and positivity in the band is amazing. The creativity and drive; there's a connection between us that I think has never existed as it does right now."
Sean Mackin on violin and vocals remains the other band member from the initial glory days, with lead guitarist Ryan Mendez coming aboard in 2005.
By scaling back their touring schedule from nine months a year to eight weeks, "we're getting bigger and better results than we ever have," Key said,
Key and his bandmates drew energy from their spring release "A Hopeful Sign," a collaboration where post-rock band Hammock took some of Yellowcard's best-loved songs like "Southern Air," "Only One," "Telescope" and signature track "Ocean Avenue" and re-imagined them in more atmosphere, cinematic realm. The "Hopeful Sign" tracks aren't remixes, rather Key re-recorded both the piano and the vocals in his home studio.
"The biggest takeaway from that was getting to work with Hammock, I've been such a huge fan of theirs for so many years," Key said. "It's such an unexpected and off-the-wall collaboration with the godfathers of post-rock."
Ten years ago, that collaboration might not have worked so well.
"But I think our fans have come of age to a point where some sort of ambient versions of songs they know and love are perfect for them right now," Key said. "It's kind of a meditative version of Yellowcard and really gives the songs a completely new perspective and meaning. You take a song like 'Ocean Avenue,' which is fun and on the hopeful side and now it's this sad, heartbreaking song about loss and leaving and doesn't have that charged, I'm-going-out-to-take-on-the-world energy that it does on (the) 'Ocean Avenue' (album). People have been through a lot in their life, so to hear 'Ocean Avenue' in a sense of loss and reflection makes sense now."
As he reflects back to the "Ocean Avenue" release in 2003, Key can't pinpoint one specific moment when he and Yellowcard realized they had made an iconic album.
"There was a lot snowballing towards it. When we made that first music video and saw it on MTV and 'Ocean Avenue: The Shooting of the Video' it was like, wow, this is a song that's not even being pushed on the radio, and this video feels like a movie set," Key said. "The label was all in for 'Ocean Avenue,' and we could feel that pretty early on, but you never know. What if the song just doesn't resonate with people? By that end of that summer of 2004 when we had done the Video Music Awards and won an award and played the show at that point we were sort of overwhelmed in both good and bad ways.
"Overwhelmed with excitement in like 'Holy (cow) this is amazing. We have a huge record. We're a huge band. How did this happen? Two years ago, we were playing in a garage, literally, practicing for local shows. But also overwhelmed in challenging ways. It happened pretty fast. We were really young. There were a lot of struggles with personalities in the band at that time. I don't think we were prepared for that level of success. Just didn't have the tools to deal with it. I try not to let it bum me out. I try to learn from it. Any mistakes or regrets I have from that time I try to use as tools for what not to do. And try to focus on how grateful I am though I don't have the fondest memories of that time. Although we attained a high level of success it was stressful and anxious time in my life and all our lives, and it became hard to enjoy so you sort of partied through it. I try now to look back and find those moments to remind me how unbelievable it is that we're still doing what we do and there are so many people still coming to see us play. There are so many reasons why we should not have made it out of that era as a band. And there are so many reasons why we should not have made it out of that era where we broke up the band for what we thought would be forever. And we're still here and still kicking, and that's just amazing."
