Zanzibar safari | Sun, Sea & Safari

Visitors to the glorious island of Zanzibar come not just for the breathtaking beaches, beautiful corals and turquoise waters but to make the most of their African travels and combine their beach plans with Zanzibar safari adventures on mainland Tanzania.

In the Zanzibar archipelago and its mainland in Tanzania, guests can easily combine the two. Zanzibar’s white sand beaches are simply stunning and attract visitors from the world over to its shores whilst the island’s wildlife attractions are more limited to marine life, monkeys and birds.

The big five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and African buffalo) wildlife can easily be found however on the Tanzanian mainland, a short 30 minute plane hop from Zanzibar to the spectacular Selous Game Reserve or a 2 hour ferry ride to Mikumi NP or a 3 hour charter flight to the world renowned Serengeti National Park.

Zanzibar safari tours

A safari tour package in Tanzania is typically organized by a tour operator, safari tour company or via a self drive Africa safari trip, taking into consideration the number of days visitors would like to allocate for beach time and safari activities.

Given the distance between parks, it is important to take many elements into account when visitors plan their Zanzibar safari and beach tour including:

  • Which animals you would like to see
  • Budget for the trip
  • Travel party (solo, with friends or a larger family group)
  • Activities you would like to include (hot air balloon, hiking)
  • Beaches you would like to see as there are many great beaches in Zanzibar which visitors enjoy as well as the nearby islands of Pamunda , Pemba island , Chumbe and Unguja Island .

  • Luxury lodge packages
  • Meals/drinks all catered for
  • Safari guides and transport
  • Facilities prepared including showers, wifi, cocktails and all requests

Best time to go on a beach and safari in Zanzibar

Tanzania is a beautiful country to visit, regardless of the season and popular with visitors from the U.S, Europe and South Africa.

Certain periods are more favorable for a safari in the best conditions. To know the best time to visit Zanzibar , visitors should take into consideration the following key criteria:

  • Regions visited
  • Weather conditions

The best time to visit Zanzibar for a beach and safari trip is during the dry season, from late June to October. The Zanzibar beaches are dry with no rains and the summer months are ideal for the Great Wildebeest Migration river crossings and impressive wildlife sightings.

Zanzibar and Tanzania safari cost

Tanzania is a premier safari destination in Africa, thus incurring the more expensive costs associated with this.

There are multiple factors that can impact the cost of a safari in Tanzania including accommodation selected, trip duration, safari costs, tours, flight transfers from Zanzibar island to game reserves on the mainland, transfers, meal options and additional activities visitors may request.

Travellers on a budget can reduce costs by booking their own flights, accommodation and the best things to do in Zanzibar as well as hiring a 4*4 to travel between the parks and reserves.

Organizing your safari

There are a number of different options available for organizing your Zanzibar holiday and Tanzania safari including:

Tour operators

The biggest tour operators will offer safaris in Tanzania where visitors can book a package that will cover their flight, transport, accommodation, activities and food, an ideal option for those with no previous safari experience in preparing for such a trip.

Safari travel agencies

Visitors will often find dedicated safari travel agencies to be the best option in booking their dream safari. These agencies have many years experience in booking safaris as well as multiple partnerships with local tourism networks and lodges/game reserves.

Travel agencies typically offer:

  • Local tour guides
  • Trips to must-see wildlife areas and parks
  • All transportation from Stone Town in Zanzibar to the game reserve
  • High quality accommodation at reduced prices
  • Day safaris and full day itineraries customised to your requirements

The cost of the service of these specialized agencies can be a bit higher compared to other options, a cost worth bearing given the quality and ease of services provided.

Organizing your own safari is possible but only recommended for more experienced travelers and visitors on a strict budget.

Accommodation

Visitors typically will have the choice between lodges, chalets and campsites as well as African tent camps, suites and bedrooms.

Luxurious facilities are common including swimming pools, restaurants, bars, spas and terraces. Game viewings and plane transfers are organized by the accommodation providers.

Trip preparation

Travellers can fly to Zanzibar via the island’s main airport (ZNZ) for visitors wondering how to get to Zanzibar .

A tourist visa is required to enter Zanzibar for U.S, U.K, Canada and EU citizens. Tanzania has introduced an ‘e-visas’ system through which applications can be submitted and approved online in advance of travel.

It is also possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. Visitors may also be asked to provide proof of their return journey.

A visitor’s passport must be valid for at least 6 months with at least one free blank page and and certain vaccinations may also be required to enter the country.

The CDC and WHO recommend the following vaccinations for Zanzibar and Tanzania: Covid-19, Hepatitis A, hepatitis B, typhoid, rabies, meningitis, polio, measles, mumps and rubella (MMR), Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis), chickenpox, shingles, pneumonia and influenza.

Most safari parks are high-risk zones. The highest risk of transition is in the rainy season from November to May.

Further details on Zanzibar vaccine & covid info here .

What to pack

The essential items to pack for your Tanzania safari include:

  • Neutral coloured clothes
  • Long-sleeved shirts protecting against the sun and mosquitoes
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and insect repellent
  • Jackets and sweaters for early morning game drives
  • Comfortable walking shoes

The currency of Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).

USD $1/GBP £0.75 =  Approximately 2,322 TZS.

Carrying a small amount of Zanzibar currency , the Tanzania Shilling (TZS) is recommended as back-up when paying for items where credit card facilities are unavailable.

Driving in Zanzibar and Tanzania

Driving is conducted on the left hand side of the road in Zanzibar and driving is generally considered to be safe.

Visitors driving through parks may require a 4×4, whilst carrying a map & GPS is recommended.

Visitors should consider travel insurance when planning their trip to help protect and cover the costs of hospitalization or repatriation if required.

Some credit cards may already include travel insurance. Online travel insurance comparators are also useful in finding suitable offers.

Baraza Resort and Spa

Zanzibar is an attractive tropical island that combines perfectly with a safari experience in Tanzania. Zanzibar boasts some of Africa's finest swimming beaches, world-class scuba-diving sites, luxurious beachfront resorts, the finest spices in the world, and a wide range of water sports. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, explore the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or indulge in several adventure activities, this island affords you the gift of choice and an unforgettable getaway.

Zanzibar has a tropical climate allowing you to plan your seaside vacation in this part of Eastern Africa at any time of the year without any extreme variability in temperatures. The monsoon breezes blowing in from the Indian Ocean help to maintain its warm temperatures.

The best time to visit Zanzibar is from June to October during the cool, dry months of spring. Another popular time to visit this tropical island is from December to February when it’s hot and dry. The ocean temperatures are perfect for swimming, diving or snorkeling expeditions.

There are two best times to scuba dive off the coast of Zanzibar, in July and August and in February and March. Diving off the north coast is particularly good from June to October and off the south coast between November and March .

Zanzibar Island has two wet seasons, the long rains and the short rains. The long rains in Zanzibar begin in the month of March and pick up the tempo in April and May, dusting off by June while the short rains fall in the months of November and December . We don’t recommend visiting Zanzibar during the rainy seasons.

Unguja, also known as Zanzibar Island, is the main tropical island in the Tanzanian archipelago of Zanzibar.

Boasting some of the finest swimming beaches in Africa, as well as world-class scuba-diving sites, we rate Zanzibar as an ideal destination for travelers seeking a blissful, barefoot-luxury holiday. Whether you want to spend your days relaxing on a tropical beach, exploring the cultural attractions of Stone Town, or enjoying the many water sports on offer, this island has something for every traveler.

Zanzibar produces some of the world’s finest spices and is home to the endemic Zanzibar red colobus, the Zanzibar servaline genet, and the (possibly extinct) Zanzibar leopard.

Zanzibar is also perfectly combinable with a safari in Tanzania .

Stone Town is the heart and soul of the island and oldest part of Zanzibar City. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, it is known for its rich cultural heritage of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements. An incredible mashup of winding alleys and old Arabic-style buildings, you can temporarily lose yourself in the town’s magic. Soak up the local culture by sipping a cup of coffee from a local vendor or wander through the streets, discovering unique little spots at every turn.

Palace Museum

Commonly known as the Sultan’s Palace, The Palace Museum is perhaps the most historic building in Stone Town and is a must-see for any traveler. The Palace Museum is located in the waterfront, overlooking the ocean, and was built in the 19th century as a home for the Sultan and his family. After the 1964 revolution, the site was used as a Government building and was renamed as The People’s Palace. Today it serves as a museum that showcases relics of the past Sultan family.

House of Wonders

The House of Wonders is a hugely important and visually stunning historic building in Stone Town. The House of Wonders rises in impressive tiers of slender steel pillars and balconies overlooking the waterfront. Its enormous carved doors are said to be the largest in East Africa, fronted by two bronze cannon with Portuguese inscriptions dating them to the 16th century. It boasts a highly interesting exhibition that offers a brilliant insight into Zanzibari and Swahili culture. The House of Wonders is the grandest and tallest building in all of Stone Town and is found in a prominent location in front of the Forodhani Gardens on the old town’s seafront.

The Old Fort

The oldest building in Stone Town, the Old Fort is located on the seafront, right in front of the famous Forodhani Gardens. Originally built in the 17th century with the purpose of defending the island from attacks from the Portuguese, nowadays the Old Fort is one of Stone Town’s main sights. Visitors can admire the remains of the former fort and amble around the courtyard in the center, where sellers have local produce for sale. An old amphitheater still hosts events and functions in the fort.

Prison Island

A half-hour boat trip from Zanzibar, Prison Island provides a fascinating glimpse into the island’s slightly dark past – this land was once used as a place where slaves were detained and, when slavery was abolished, it functioned as a camp where people with deadly diseases were sent. Fortunately enough, that is all in the past and today the island is a nature reserve for giant tortoises and a place to see the ruins that once functioned as the prison.

Jozani Forest

A vast and scenic spread of green, Jozani is the last indigenous forest left on Zanzibar. Located inland from Chwaka Bay the area often floods, which luckily nurtures a unique swamp forest of many amazing looking trees and ferns. This forest is one of the last remaining sanctuaries in the world of the red Colobus monkey and is also a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna. The forest is best reached via bus (309 or 310), by chartered taxi, or as part of an organized tour.

Nungwi Beach

Nungwi is a village found on Zanzibar’s North West tip. This is a popular place yet it’s not overrun by tourists, and it’s one of Zanzibar's top beaches as the tide doesn’t head out too far. The aquarium on the north coast of Nungwi near the lighthouse, rears small turtles found on the beach until they are large enough and then released to survive in the sea. The aquarium is a natural pond with seawater that seeps through the cliff at high tide. This is a great destination for those looking to just soak up some sun and dip their toes in the sea but don’t need the luxury of a fancy hotel.

Zanzibar is known for its spice trade, so what better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than learning about its wealthiest and most profitable industry? Travelers can choose from a variety of tours and explore the winding streets with expert tour guides who will inform you of the origins of the industry, as well as teaching guests about the wide variety of spices that Zanzibar produces and trades in.

Thanks Pascal you are amazing!
From the moment we arrived in South Africa, our safari adventure was nothing short of extraordinary. Nestled in the heart of the African wilderness, we found ourselves surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kruger National Park, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Our accommodation was luxurious yet seamlessly integrated into the natural environment, offering us stunning views of the savannah from the comfort of our private deck. Each day began with an exhilarating sunrise game drive, where our expert guide shared his deep knowledge and passion for the local wildlife. Witnessing the "Big Five" was an awe-inspiring experience that left us in complete awe of nature's magnificence. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and made sure we felt safe while immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Evenings were equally enchanting, with sundowner drinks enjoyed against the backdrop of a fiery African sunset, followed by sumptuous dinners under the starlit sky. The cuisine was a delightful fusion of local flavors and gourmet dishes, perfectly complementing the day's adventures. The sense of community at the lodge was heartwarming. The staff were attentive, ensuring every need was met with a smile, and fellow travelers quickly became friends as we shared stories around the campfire. Our South African safari was more than just a holiday; it was a transformative journey that connected us with nature and left us with lasting memories. For anyone seeking an adventure that combines luxury, education, and unparalleled wildlife encounters, a safari in South Africa is an absolute must. We left with hearts full of gratitude and a profound appreciation for the natural world, eagerly planning our return to this magnificent land.
A great experience
Pascal was wonderful to work with! When one camp option fell through he quickly found an equal alternative for our group. He was always very responsive to my many emails and texts. I would highly recommend Safari.com.

Top notch service
Catherine was very helpful and responsive. Our trip was postponed due to the pandemic and she efficiently advocated for us with the game reserves to rebook our trip. Also, the SA embassy in our region required additional police certification of our reservation, the Safari.com team went to the police station and sent us the certified documents on the same day. Amazing service. Highly recommend!

Let us welcome you into the World of Wonders and the Wonders of Wildlife !

African Wildlife Safaris Logo

The exotic Zanzibar archipelago lies 25km off the east coast of Tanzania, and comprises of Unguja, Pemba and an array of small, tropical islands.

Arab and Persian traders arrived here during the 8th century and by the 17th century, Zanzibar was an important port on the spice, ivory and slave trading routes. Governed over the centuries by various sultans, the Portuguese and later, the Sultanate of Oman, Zanzibar became a British Protectorate in the late 19th century.

Famous European explorers like Livingstone visited before launching their explorations into the “interior”. The old Stone Town is a UNESCO Heritage listed site and a tour of the town reveals its complex history and dark slaving past, as well as graceful Zanzibari architecture. The maze of narrow streets are lined with elegant coral stone houses – which give the town its name – and feature ornate balconies and intricately carved wooden doors. You can visit the Sultan’s Palace, the Arab Fort, the Old Dispensary and the Livingstone house.

The northern and eastern coasts of the island are home to beautiful, peaceful beaches that boast a number of excellent resorts, which makes Zanzibar a perfect place to conclude an East African safari. The island also boasts white sand beaches, clear, turquoise water, and beach hotels offering barefoot luxury; a relaxing conclusion to any East African safari. The island is easily accessible and there are direct flights from Nairobi and the United Arab Emirates.

We booked couple of tours via this company. Fahad , our driver was amazing. We saw many points of interest and were in awe. It was no stress, no issues and no time constraints. They customize trips to your liking. Fahad was amazing and we will come back.

– TripAdvisor, Jan 2021

They organised a 10-day southern-circuit safari and 7 night vacation on Zanzibar. Excellent choice of accommodation, both during the safari and the vacation. We did the safari with quite modest budget and then splashed out a bit on the island. Good honest people.

– TripAdvisor, Nov 2019

We booked tours over the internet. The communication and service we received from inception was excellent. Their prices were reasonable for the tours and the guides. They were very understanding and most accommodating. Highly recommended. Very punctual and a delight to do deal with.

Darajani Market

Travelers looking for an authentic East African experience need look no further than the crowded stalls and narrow passes of Darajani Market.  While Darajani is mostly a food-lover’s paradise, with plenty of vendors selling fresh ingredients and homemade delights.  Travelers should be prepared to haggle for the best price—particularly on fragrant spices—one of the best souvenirs from a trip to Zanzibar.

Often referred to as Mji Mkongwe—the Swahili word for old town—Stone Town is the oldest part of the Zanzibar and a popular destination for visitors to this incredible island. Visitors can navigate the maze of narrow passes that connect major city streets to the rest of this lively destination on foot or aboard bikes or motos. It’s the perfect way to explore the island’s unique architecture, which includes former palaces, churches, and mosques that date back as far as the early 1800s.

House of Wonders

House of Wonders, which is home to the Museum of History and Culture, is not only the largest—but also the tallest building in Stone Town.  Travelers can explore the grounds, which include a traditional Swahili boat, old-world fishing tools, and famous ships, or wander the halls that offer an up close look at traditional garments, historic portraits of royalty and ancient furniture taken from former sultans’ homes. A visit to House of Wonders provides travelers with a window into the local culture and the island’s rich history.

Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park

Travelers who wander the thick forests of this 19-square-mile park will likely spot the indigenous Zanzibar red colobus and families of Skyes monkeys. Travelers say close encounters with these playful creatures are one of the major highlights of any trip to Jozani, and a lucky few may even spot the indigenous Zanzibar Leopard—a wild cat found nowhere else on earth.  A well-kept boardwalk that winds through the lush coastal flora makes navigating Jozani’s scenic landscape a breeze.

Mtoni Palace Ruins

This ancient palace on the western shores of Zanzibar was the birthplace of the late Princess Salme and today is among the top destinations for travelers to the island. Travelers can tour the grounds aboard a traditional donkey cart and wander through the Persian baths, main palace and beautiful botanical gardens.

Visitors can wander through what remains of the old reception hall and trace the Omani family footsteps through the palace garden, palace baths and remnant of the royal courtyard.

Old Fort (Ngome Kongwe)

It’s giant stone fortress once protected the city from an outside attack, and it was later used as a prison to house local lawbreakers. Today, the Old Fort has been transformed into a cultural center that caters to tourists interested in exploring the history of the place and purchasing souvenirs like popular paintings and handmade jewelry.

The open-air theater is the perfect spot for travelers to catch a live dance performance or experience the local live music scene. The Old Fort also provides space for major festivals and even has an information desk for travelers in search of tips, advice, and guidance from residents in the know.

Safari Planning

Zanzibar Island, the “Spice Island,” is, in fact, more than an “island” it is an archipelago of stunning tropical Indian Ocean islands.

Easily accessible and a total paradise – don’t delay – treat yourself and go to Zanzibar now! You will not regret it!

An absolute paradise; consisting of many small islands and two larger ones; Unguja (the main island and referred to as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island.

Zanzibar; this most historic of island paradises; full of atmosphere, spice plantations, and beautiful beaches and just a short hop from the mainland of either Tanzania or Kenya . Think beautiful, clear, turquoise waters, patches of reefs, miles of palm-tree fringed white sandy beaches with a heady mix of Swahili and Arabic culture and history.

20210929-Zuri Entrance

The Spice Island's capital, Stone Town, is a historic centre and World Heritage Site. Rich in history and culture, this jewel of an island capital consists of cobbled, tiny winding lanes lined with traders, crumbling palaces, and mosques giving the muezzins' call to prayer at daybreak. Stone Town is fascinating. A true Swahili and Arabic fuel for the senses.

Zanzibar, while well-known, is not tourist saturated, and it offers stunning beaches for those that savour this idyllic Indian Ocean archipelago.   "If I'd been a Victorian explorer, I'd have thought, Sod it, I'll stay here" ~  Jeremy Clarkson on Zanzibar , which he further described as having history and soul!   Well, we couldn't agree more. Zanzibar is a fantastic honeymoon, anniversary or family vacation destination and a great end to a safari on the mainland. There is plenty to do in Zanzibar, from spice tours to forest tours, snorkelling, or diving, with both Pemba Island and Mafia Island being particularly good for diving. Mafia Island is famous for its abundance of whale sharks from October to March.

In recent years, tourism has overtaken the spice trade in the economy, but these Islands retain a rustic charm. So essentially there are many places to relax, and plenty of fantastic accommodation options suit everyone's needs. Some high-end beach resorts like  Zuri Zanzibar  and  The Residence  offer opulence and refined barefoot luxury. In contrast, others provide more lodge-style accommodation similar to those on the safari circuits, such as  Kilindi  and  Mnemba Island Lodge . In addition, the boutique and exclusive villas at  Xanadu  offer complete personalised services and are typically all-inclusive, a firm favourite of Safari Guru for honeymoon vacations. Some of the Zanzibar properties are unique in that they are a hybrid of all three, offering suites, rooms and villas throughout its beautiful gardens and beachfront access, such as Zuri. Personal villas with private chefs abound, and don't think you need a large group, or deep pockets, to take advantage of this intimate, exclusive style. These villas come in different sizes (accommodating two people upwards) and are privately run. True Zanzibarian warmth.

For those seeking the culture and intrigue of the Island, a stay in enchanting Stone Town is a real treat. Here you can choose accommodations to match your style and tastes. From the historic, unique, atmospheric 19th-century mansion, built-in Swahili-Arabian style boutique hotels of Emerson Spice to the equally charismatic, romantic yet slightly more conventionally elegant Kisiwa House. Or the more luxurious beach/town retreat of the five-star Omani-styled Park Hyatt. Don't be fooled by the chain name of this luxury hotel; it has real character too.

Indeed, in our view, and depending on your holiday wishes, a mix of a stay in Stone Town and beach property is an absolute 'best of both worlds' option.

What experiences does Zanzibar Offer? There is plenty of beach relaxation, cultural opportunities and fresh delicacies for the foodies! The warm Indian Ocean offers spectacular energetic fun, the turquoise waters perfect for diving , snorkelling, fishing, dhow boats sunset cruises, paddle boarding and sport fishing! To visit Zanzibar island offers real food for the soul and a proper immersive break from the realities of the daily grind!

Let us share more details about Zanzibar Island with you, and current Zanzibar Island Packages and where is best for you.

Thanks you Deon for amazing and wonderful experience of Masai Mara. It's once in a lifetime and on top great hospitality from Safari Guru right from arrival, Resort stay and well designed itinerary. I would love to bring my family again this time for Botswana, so look forward to crafted trip next.

1-Day Safari From Zanzibar - Compare 35 Tours

Zanzibar is both a fabulous destination in its own right and a launchpad for so many safari possibilities over on the Tanzanian mainland. Having only 1 day means that the choices of where you can go will be limited, but having 1 day to spend on safari is always better than having no days at all. The best thing about a 1-day safari of this kind is waking up one morning in Zanzibar, surrounded by the swaying palm trees of the Indian Ocean coastline, and knowing that you might be seeing some incredible animals before you go to bed again. It will be quite a busy day and will involve a lot of traveling. But the rewards should be worth every minute and every dollar spent.

What parks are typically visited on a 1-day trip from Zanzibar?

“With only 1 day to spend on safari, the most important thing is to try and get to the safari park as quickly as possible. This means you should really look at those packages that offer a direct flight from Zanzibar to the park in question (rather than requiring an additional flight from Arusha or Dar es Salaam). This probably means that Tanzania’s Northern safari circuit will be off-limits for a day trip from Zanzibar. You’re more likely to find tours that go directly into Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) or Mikumi National Park. Even where there aren’t direct flights, the traveling time is likely to be much shorter than to most other parks on the Tanzanian mainland. Another popular possibility could be coastal Saadani National Park, although the wildlife is not quite as good as in some other Tanzanian parks.”

Is Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) better for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar?

“Either Mikumi or Nyerere (Selous) would be an excellent choice for a 1-day safari from Zanzibar. Both have incredible wildlife possibilities, although each offers a slightly different safari experience. Mikumi is a first-rate safari experience and ranks high on my list of best Tanzanian parks for wilderness. It can sometimes even feel like a smaller version of the Serengeti, especially out on the Mkata Floodplain. And when it comes to wildlife, there’s a good chance you can see big cats, as well as elephant, giraffe, buffalo and hippo. Nyerere is also excellent, with big cats, buffalo, elephant and so much more. What Nyerere can offer that other parks can’t is the mighty Rufiji, one of Africa’s great rivers. A boat safari is a real highlight of visiting here, both for the scenery and the wildlife you might see.”

Is 1 day enough for a trip from Zanzibar?

“One day on safari is never enough, and that is particularly the case when it comes to a day trip from Zanzibar. That’s because you’ll need to factor in your travel time to get to the safari park in question, which means flying from Zanzibar to the mainland (and hopefully directly into an airstrip in the park you’ll be visiting). Another downside of only having 1 day for your safari is that you’ll spend the best time of the day traveling, rather than looking for animals. The early morning and late afternoon, when the light is best and animals are at their most active and easiest to see, would be better spent out on safari, rather than flying to get there. Despite all of this, if you only have 1 day to be on safari, then it’s sure to be a good day. In fact, I can think of no way I’d rather spend a day than going on safari. Would more time be ideal? Of course. But any time you can spend on a Tanzanian safari will be time well spent.”

Are all 1-day safaris from Zanzibar fly-in safaris?

“The only way to make a 1-day safari from Zanzibar work is to fly into the destination you’ll be visiting. Zanzibar is an island, which means you have no choice but to fly. And because you only have 1 day, you really should make the most of your time by flying directly into the national park you want to see (rather than changing planes along the way). If, for example, you decide to fly to Nyerere, the main airstrip for the park is only a very short drive from the main eastern gate into the park. This means that you will be on safari almost as soon as you get off the plane. And while you may spend a large part of your day flying to and from the mainland, just remember that the views you get to enjoy along the way could end up being a real highlight of your trip.”

How much does a 1-day trip from Zanzibar cost?

“There are lots of different tours and packages to consider when planning your day trip from Zanzibar, and prices will vary from one operator to the next. As a general rule, however, finding a cheap or affordable 1-day safari from Zanzibar will be a challenge. Because flying is so expensive, and you’ll need to fly there and back in a single day, you can expect to pay at least US$500 per person, although you could end up paying quite a lot more. There is a little less variation involved in 1-day safaris than there is for longer, multiday safaris. That’s because all of your costs (including two air transfers) will be condensed into a single day. The main cost variables will be whether you’re traveling on a group or private safari and whether you’re traveling in low or high season.”

Which Safari Destinations to combine with Zanzibar

Are you thinking about booking a safari to see the amazing animals of africa in 2023.

If so, have you considered combining your safari with a visit to the beautiful island of Zanzibar? This spectacular island forms part of Tanzania in East Africa, and its white-sand beaches, tropical landscape, rich cultural history and diving hotspots make it popular for visitors looking for beach and safari holiday.

zanzibar safari carte

Tanzania is home to some of the best safari destinations in the world, including the world-famous Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater , and Tarangire National Park, while neighbouring Kenya is home to Amboseli National Park and Masai Mara National Reserve —two more excellent safari destinations that offer unique and special experiences for both the first timer to Africa and the experienced traveler. Here is a closer look at why these six East African safari destinations would combine well with your Zanzibar vacation package .

zanzibar safari carte

1. The Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Serengeti is one of the most popular safari destinations in Africa and for good reason. With its abundance of wildlife and its wide-open plains, it’s no wonder that this national park is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of Africa’s national parks. The best time to visit the Serengeti is during the dry season (July to October) when the animals are concentrated around the waterholes and easier to spot. Don’t forget about the Great Migration , where incredible sights of a million-strong wildebeest, zebra and gazelle are what await during season!

A quick flight will get you from the Serengeti to Stone Town in Zanzibar.

zanzibar safari carte

2. The Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater is a unique safari destination because its wildlife density is one of the highest in Africa. With its dense forest and large lake, this ancient caldera is also one of the most picturesque places on the continent. The best time to visit the Ngorongoro Crater is during the dry season (June to September), although year-round game-viewing can be enjoyed here.

Take in a few days in the Serengeti before heading to the Crater and ending in Zanzibar.

zanzibar safari carte

3. Tarangire National Park, Tanzania

Tarangire National Park is often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors (Serengeti and Ngorongoro), but that doesn’t make it any less spectacular. This lesser-known park is one of the best places in Africa to see elephants and is also well known for its spectacular babobab trees. The best time to visit Tarangire National Park is during the dry season (July to October).

Tarangire is close to Arusha, where you will catch your flight to Zanzibar.

zanzibar safari carte

4. Amboseli National Park, Kenya

Amboseli National Park is one of Kenya ‘s most popular tourist destinations and it is easy to see why. With its stunning views of Mount Kilimanjaro and its abundant wildlife, Amboseli is a photographer’s dream come true. The best time to visit Amboseli National Park is during the dry season (June – September), although the summer rainfall allows for some spectacular scenery.

A quick flight will take you from Amboseli to Nairobi, where you can enjoy a direct flight to Zanzibar Island.

zanzibar safari carte

5. Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya

The Masai Mara National Reserve is often referred to as “the jewel of Kenya’s wildlife viewing areas.” And with good reason! Its abundant wildlife and stunning landscapes make it one of Africa’s must-see destinations. The best time to visit the Masai Mara is during the Wildebeest Migration (July to October) when millions of Wildebeest and Zebra converge on the reserve in search of fresh grasslands, crossing the Mara River from the neighboring Serengeti.

Fly to either Arusha (Tanzania) or back to Nairobi to enjoy a quick flight to Zanzibar.

If your Zanzibar vacation needs more than just island paradise, white-sand beaches, and cocktails on the beach, consider combining it with a world-class East African safari in one of Kenya or Tanzania’s top destinations.

Notes on a Last-Minute Safari

By David Sedaris

Hand holding a serving plate with a yellow zebra on it.

Listen to this article.

It was a good year for Christmas parties. At one, I met a number of authors I had always admired. This can be tricky, but they were all lovely. The food was lovely, too, though I dropped a miniature barbecue sandwich on the new white shirt I was wearing, and will likely never get the grease stain out.

At another party, the following week, I was introduced to a curator from the Metropolitan Museum. We talked about people who throw soup and oil on beloved paintings, hoping to draw attention to climate change or poor nutrition or whatever their cause is, and then I learned that he would soon be leaving on an African safari, the sort where you carry a camera rather than a gun.

“Have you been planning it for months?” I asked.

“Actually, it all came together over the past few weeks,” he told me.

On the subway home, I said to Hugh in the faux-pouty voice that I use to challenge extreme injustice—other couples taking a vacation when it should be us, for example—“Why can’t we go on a safari?”

A month later, we were in an open-sided four-by-four vehicle surrounded by seven lions, none of which seemed to care about us. All of them were female, and I wondered if, when writing about this afterward—for surely I would—I might be taken to task for using the term “lionesses.”

“Is it like referring to someone as a ‘waitress’ or a ‘stewardess’?” I whispered to Hugh, who was seated beside me, sketching. “Will people say, ‘Why did you have to mention their gender in the first place? Why can’t you just say “lions” and leave it at that?’ ”

To my mind, the gender mattered, since the females do the majority of the hunting, and are therefore scarier when they’re eight feet away and can surely smell you.

I looked the subject up later, when we got back to camp, and learned that there’s some debate about whether or not to refer to lionesses as “she-lions.” Of course, none of that debate is coming from the big-cat family. What surprised me about these animals was their playfulness, the way one would sidle up to another and gently swat her, or roll over on her back with her paws in the air. We’d been stationary for ten minutes or so when one of the seven walked in front of our four-by-four, hunched over, and defecated. I thought that, like a cat in a flower bed, she’d then cover it up, but no. The moment she rejoined the others, a jackal darted out of the tall grass, snatched the turd in his mouth, and was about to make off with it when a hyena intervened, and a struggle ensued.

“Over a turd ?” Hugh whispered.

We might have stayed there for hours, happily observing, but then another four-by-four pulled up. Its passengers went nuts: “Seven lionesses!” Hugh and I looked at the new arrivals with an expression that read, Um, they’re sort of ours. As if we personally had gathered them there. Then another four-by-four pulled up, and another after that.

I don’t know how many vehicles were roaming the Maasai Mara that afternoon. It’s a five-hundred-and-eighty-three-square-mile nature reserve, so had there been a thousand other four-by-fours we likely wouldn’t have seen more than a handful of them. June to October is the busiest season in Kenya, safari-wise, and this was early February. It was hot but not humid, and there were three of us in the vehicle: me, Hugh, and our twenty-six-year-old guide, Dalton, a Maasai tribesman who had on a moss-green shirt with the name of the place where we were staying embroidered on its right breast pocket. His pants were khaki and knee-length, worn with ankle-high suède boots.

Dalton’s hair was cut short. His head was almost perfectly round, and he was missing several of his bottom teeth. “What is it you would like to see?” he’d asked upon collecting us that first bright morning at the airstrip.

“A panda,” I told him.

On the ninety-minute drive to our camp, we saw every animal that was in “ The Lion King ” and then some. They were just there , like ants at a picnic, except that they were elephants and giraffes. We saw zebras and leopards and wildebeests and warthogs, all grazing or resting or fleeing on this grass-covered, seemingly limitless plain.

“Have you seen a kill?” people in the other four-by-fours—couples with camera lenses the size of the Hubble telescope—would ask. It didn’t take long to realize that seven lionesses weren’t enough. They had to have blood dripping from their jaws.

“On our first day, we saw a lion eating a wildebeest,” I’d tell them.

That was like saying you’d seen one eating a sandwich. The prize was to watch one pounce on her prey, and rip its throat out. “Just last month, a little after midnight, two lions took down a zebra right there next to your tent,” the woman who checked us into our camp told us, pointing over the railing to a shaded ravine. The camp was built on the banks of the Talek River, which was swollen from recent rains but still flowed lazily. There was no fence around the property. Wild animals came and went at their leisure, though during the day all we saw were crocodiles and mongooses. It was after dark that the action took place, so at night we had to be escorted from our tent to the common area by Maasai tribesmen carrying spears. The most dangerous animal—what Dalton called “the most killingest”—was the hippo. I had learned this years earlier from a nature documentary and was surprised, as they always look so happy to me, almost like they’re smiling.

We saw countless hippos in Kenya. “All they want is to get into our swimming pool,” the property manager, a man named Steven, told us. “And if that happens we will never get them out.”

He was giving us a tour, and was leading us from the hydroponic vegetable garden—the “ shamba of goodness,” it was called—to the recreation area. I looked at the man whose job it was to guard the pool we were passing. “What do hippos smell like?” I asked.

Steven thought for a moment. “Cows.”

There were nine tents in all. “Are there many other guests at the moment?” I’d asked the woman who checked us in.

“We have no guests here,” she told me, smiling so broadly I could see her gums. “Only family.”

Oh, no, I thought, for doesn’t a person go on safari to escape that kind of talk? Ditto “ shamba of goodness.”

If I know I have to get up early, I generally have a devil of a time falling asleep. The place where Hugh and I slept was a tent in the same way that a Shake Shack is an actual shack. The pitched ceiling was, at its highest point, twelve feet, and, not including our deck, which overlooked the river, we had a good nine hundred square feet of floor space—with a real floor. There was electricity and Wi-Fi. Potable water. A tub, a shower, and a toilet. Complimentary laundry service. Outstanding food. Our outings took place early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so I’d go to bed and, knowing that we needed to meet Dalton at 6 A.M. , lie awake while Hugh snored beside me. The book I’d brought along for the trip was “ The Andy Warhol Diaries ,” which didn’t at all fit the location. Nor did it make sense to watch, say, past seasons of “Project Runway.” We were in Kenya, after all, and could hear all sorts of creatures on the other side of our canvas walls, roaring and moaning and carrying on.

On the first night, I reached for my iPad and watched a documentary on baboons. It wasn’t the kind of program that gives the animals names and talks about them in a whisper (“. . . but Denice wasn’t about to give up that easily”). Still, it was less interesting than I wanted it to be. The best part was when the heir to the colony, a four-month-old male, was killed by an intruder and his mother carried his carcass around until it was just a rag of fur.

The following afternoon, we came upon a troop of baboons resting beside the river. There were at least thirty of them, many with babies on their backs. “Get out your camera,” Dalton said as he turned off the four-by-four’s engine. I’d told him from the get-go that photography was not my thing.

“I will not be taking a single picture,” I’d promised.

“Not even if we come upon a rhino?” he asked.

“Not even if we see one fighting a mother grizzly,” I told him.

Dalton kept thinking I’d buckle, but I never did, at least not in Kenya. Later, in Tanzania, I would pull out my phone, but not for an animal. Rather, it was for a sign painted on the wall of a gas station. “No Smorking,” it read.

Evan, one of the guards at our camp, also noticed that I wasn’t taking any photos. He was slight and handsome and was wearing a traditional Maasai outfit that consisted of two rectangles of plaid fabric, each a different color. On his feet were sandals made of old tires. He looked outstanding, as if he’d been dressed by Comme des Garçons. When I complimented him on his clothing, he removed the upper piece of fabric, which was worn almost like a shawl. “Here, try it on,” he said.

I wanted to explain that in America this would be called cultural appropriation.

“What’s that?” I could imagine him asking.

To be honest, I’ve never understood it myself. “I think it’s when you make a taco with, like, blue cheese on it” was the best I would have been able to come up with.

“Everyone else is photographing all the time,” Evan said, taking back the piece of fabric and sounding, if not hurt, then at least a little underappreciated. “So why not you?”

“I jot things down instead,” I told him, pulling my notebook from my pocket and showing it to him. “For instance, earlier today I wrote . . .” I looked at a page and groaned. It was as if a person with only two fingers—one on each hand—had written it. While in a bumper car.

I never saw a paved road in the Maasai Mara. A few were wide enough for two vehicles, but were still as rocky and hard to navigate as the barely discernible, often flooded paths we frequently found ourselves on. My big fear before going on safari was that I wouldn’t be able to exercise. We weren’t allowed to venture on foot beyond the confines of our camp, so I worried that in order to meet my daily Apple Watch minimum of ten thousand steps —roughly four and a half miles—I’d have to walk back and forth across our deck for hours on end. I had two and a half miles under my belt the morning that Dalton met us at the airstrip, and, by the time we reached our camp, I’d miraculously logged twice that many. It seemed my watch mistook the bumpiness of the road, and the jostling it gave rise to, for walking. This was great for my step count but awful for writing.

It was only when we stopped that I could record anything legible. That said, my notes weren’t always as illuminating as I’d expected them to be. “What does ‘Alt’ mean?” I asked Hugh over dinner one night.

He looked down at the page. “It’s not ‘Alt,’ ” he said. “It’s ‘A.L.T.’ ”

Then I remembered. We’d been out early that morning, observing a short parade of ostriches. It was misty, and I pointed to a vague shape on the horizon. “What’s that?” I asked Dalton.

He followed my finger and told me it was likely an A.L.T. “Animal-looking thing,” he explained.

Another of my notes simply read “Wow!,” but I knew right off what it referred to—the highlight of our trip. We had driven up alongside a herd of eight elephants, three of them babies. Their size was impressive, but that I was prepared for. What surprised me, and was so magnificent, was the sound of the tall grass they were eating being torn from the ground with their trunks. Dalton had turned the engine off, so that was all we could hear. “Close your eyes,” I said to Hugh as I closed my own as well. If I were to manufacture a perfume, it would smell the way that grass being ripped from the ground by elephants sounds—simultaneously soothing and astonishing—and simply everyone would have to have it. The problem is that it wouldn’t go with any of the perfume names I’ve come up with over the years, the best being Obsequious.

The eight elephants were on our last day in Kenya. The following morning, we flew to Tanzania, not for more safari but to stay in a resort on the island of Zanzibar. The only animals I saw during our time there were lizards—some nearly a foot long—and snails the size of Hugh’s fist. The beach was pretty—sand as white as sugar, palm trees. The property was guarded by men with clubs tucked into their belts, and the moment you left it, walking, say, the twenty feet from your lounge chair to the water’s edge, you were set upon by people trying to sell you things: a hard-boiled egg from a bucket, a seashell, cashews, a ride on a boat, a painting of a leopard, a T-shirt with “ Hakuna Matata ” printed on it. “My friend!” someone would call, extending a closed fist and wanting you to tap it with one of your own, even while you were in the sea.

This is why I have never been to Bali or Mauritius or any of those other places people go to get some sun in the winter. The water in Zanzibar was warm and such an arresting shade of turquoise that it seemed to have been dyed. But the income gap between the people who stayed at the resort and the people who actually lived on the island was so wide you couldn’t really see anything else. Plus, the hotel staff said “Hakuna matata,” which means “No worries” in Swahili, incessantly.

“Could I maybe have more coffee?”

“Hakuna matata.”

“I’m not feeling terribly well.”

“God, that’s a big snail.”

It got to the point where you didn’t dare say anything just because you didn’t want to hear “Hakuna matata” again.

There were no price tags on anything. If you were to ask how much a sack of peppercorns was and the answer started with “For you, I am going to offer a special deal,” you knew you’d be overpaying. Everyone we came across was seemingly on the make, and who could blame them, really?

“How much for a ride to Stone Town and back?” Hugh and I asked a taxi-driver one swampy afternoon. He quoted us a price, but when we got there he claimed, “I didn’t say a hundred and fifty thousand shillings”—the equivalent of nearly sixty dollars—“I said two hundred thousand,” which simply wasn’t true. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t an enormous amount—a difference of twenty dollars, which I was going to give him anyway as a tip—but when you capped it off with “Hakuna matata” I felt like crying.

We could have ended our vacation in Kenya. It was me who wanted to add Tanzania, and mainly so that I could put it on my list of countries I have travelled to. The only thing I knew before arriving was that it’s not safe to be an albino there. Many people consider them to be evil, yet place great value on their organs and other body parts: their hands and hearts, entire legs. It’s easier to harvest them from children, so kids are at higher risk of being abducted and dismembered. Their parts are sold to witch doctors, who use them to create amulets and potions one might employ while searching for precious metals, say, or to improve one’s luck in regard to fishing. It sounds absolutely insane. How could anyone possibly be so gullible? you wonder. Then you think of all the Americans—some may be your neighbors, your co-workers, your wife or your uncle—who genuinely believe that J.F.K., Jr., did not die in a plane crash, but is alive and well and working in cahoots with Donald Trump to stop the Clintons from drinking the blood of babies. And you’re, like, The leg of a butchered child might help me find gold? O.K. I guess I’ve heard crazier things.

The world can be a savage place, but that’s not the lesson you want to carry home with you. Yes, we humans are cruel and often dangerous, but there’s still nature, and before it’s too late we need to appreciate it. Of course, not everyone can hang out with elephants, but look at that bird perched on your feeder, and at that squirrel chasing the bird away from said feeder. Look at the rats scuttering before you on a New York street, at the spider that somehow got trapped in your elevator. We’re all on a safari of one kind or another—it’s just that some of us aren’t returning with two brilliant rectangles of Maasai plaid fabric and a bacterial infection. ♦
