A ‘service all-wheel drive system’ message is a sign of an issue with the all-wheel drive system. The issue could have been set off by something as little as installing an incorrect tire size or a low battery. A worn or contaminated rear differential fluid is also something you should check. A bad control module and corroded terminals are also possible culprits.

All-Wheel Drive System and “Service AWD System” Warning

The AWD system transfers power between all four wheels to maintain vehicle traction. It uses a driveshaft to distribute the engine power between the front and rear wheels.

A ‘service all-wheel drive system’ warning indicates that the AWD system is disabled. And only the front wheels will be powering the vehicle. 

The warning could stay on or flash intermittently. But it is usually accompanied by a beeping sound. And it is common but not limited to General Motors vehicles. 

Causes and Possible Fixes of the ‘Service All Wheel Drive System’ Message

The AWD warning is often activated because of an issue with the rear differential system.  But, the breakdown of other components could also set off the warning.  

Low battery

You should start by inspecting the battery power whenever you notice the AWD warning.  The AWD system relies on the battery charge to stay operational. And anytime the battery voltage drops below 9 volts, the AWD system disables the rear wheels. It also activates the “service all wheel drive system” warning to alert the driver. 

And if a defective or low battery indeed triggered the warning, a system scan will reveal a C0550 error code. The system will record the diagnostic code either as a stored or pending DTC. 

Solving this problem is quite straightforward. If the battery is bad, replacing it will solve the problem. But if it is still in good condition, you should inspect your electrical system for a parasitic draw. 

Something as minute as the tire can also turn on the “service all wheel drive system” warning. Installing an incorrect tire size or not replacing all four tires simultaneously can prompt the message. Both instances confuse the traction control system, causing premature wear of the drivetrain. 

The AWD system will trigger the “service all wheel drive system” message to alert the driver. Thus, the correct tire size must be installed at all times.  And when replacing any tire, you must change all four, so you don’t confuse the traction control system.

Corroded connectors

A corroded rear differential harness or control module connector could activate the warning. The rear differential system has a control module in charge of the system’s operation.  The rear differential harness connects to the control module connector.

Exposing the wiring harness or control module connector to water creates corrosion. The corrosion gradually eats away the connector pins causing the breakdown in connection.

The break in transmission triggers the AWD system warning. A good preventive measure is to slather some di-electric grease on the connectors. But if the corrosion has done the damage, you’ll have to replace the connectors.

Faulty control module

The bad control module is another culprit that can set off the “service all wheel drive system” light. Like the connectors, exposing the control module to liquid can short it.  

Clean the control module immediately after it comes in contact with water. And slather some di-electric grease on it to prevent it from shorting out. Once the control module goes bad, the only solution is to replace the module.

Overheated clutch control assembly

An overheated rear differential clutch assembly can also trigger the warning. The clutch control assembly transfers torque to the rear axle. The clutch assembly has a sensor that monitors the temperature to ensure it is within the range of -40°C to +120°C. 

The AWD system disables the rear wheels anytime the clutch assembly overheats. This triggers the  “Service All Wheel Drive System” on the dashboard. The rear wheels will reactivate when the temperature is back within range. The warning will also go away after a couple of drive cycles. 

Contaminated rear differential fluid

The rear differential is divided into the clutch assembly and the ring gear segment. A seal separates both segments and prevents their different fluids from mixing. 

General Motors recommends replacing the fluids every 150,000 miles. The AWD warning may pop up when the fluids become dirty after an extended period of use. 

You will also get a warning if the seal separating both segments fails. The seal’s failure allows the fluid from both segments to mix. This disrupts the proper functioning of the rear differential system.

Replacing the fluids at the recommended interval will help keep the system running. Moreover, servicing the fluid is much cheaper than replacing warped components. For the rear differential seal, you’ll have to replace it once it fails.

How to Tackle the ‘Service All-Wheel Drive System’ Warning

You should scan your vehicle for error codes to narrow down the source when you get the warning. A basic OBD scanner cannot pull up trouble codes for a ‘service all-wheel drive system’ warning.

You’ll need a scanner that can communicate with the AWD system. Once you detect the cause of the problem, you can proceed to solve it. But you should know that dealing with an AWD system issue can be complex, even for a regular DIYer. So. you may want to use the services of a mechanic to avoid causing more damage to the system.

SERVICE AWD Light - c147b code

2011 R/T Plus AWD with about 89000 miles. SERVICE AWD light has come on periodically and most recently last night after making a left-hand turn while using the auto stick. When the SERV AWD light comes on the AWD system does not work - rear-wheel drive only. When I turn the car off and restart the light is off and the system seems to reset - until the next event that triggers the SERV AWD light. Just had it in the shop last week for the same issue. The system had stored code c147b - front axle disconnect circuit. Techs at the shop were unable to duplicate the error while there after driving 15 miles with auto stick. They did check the associated wiring and connections and said everything looked ok. They cleared the code and then it came back on last night. I also had it come on once when I turned on the wipers in a rain storm. So the question is how do I fix this error code problem? Replace the sensor? Replace the drive train control module (DTCM)? And by the way - where the heck is the sensor and DTCM actually located? Is this something a DIY can do or does it need a flash of some kind? Not critical right now but want to fix the issue before winter. Any TSB related to this in Chargers? I found some references to RAM trucks with similar issues pre-2009.   • This bulletin involves flash reprogramming the Drive Train Control Module (DTCM) with new software.
  • 2011 (LD) Charger
  • 2011 (LX) 300
  • NOTE: This Service Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with All Wheel Drive (sales code DKB).
  • Some customers may get a “Service 4WD” light in the Cabin Compartment Node (CCN). Upon further investigation the Technician may find that C1078 -Tire Revolutions Range Performance diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is set in the DTCM. This condition may occur when driving on a slippery road and the AWD system is monitoring for slipping wheels. Under these conditions the AWD system may incorrectly determining that one wheel is spinning too much. When the AWD system detects this, it shuts down the AWD capability for the remainder of the drive cycle. The system is overly sensitive to wheel slip and may set this DTC when no issue is present. The system was re-calibrated to allow more wheel slip before setting this DTC. This condition is not monitored when operating in 2WD mode. Updating the DTCM software will correct the conditions above."

Kori, Thanks, this seems related. My car has been into the dealer many times since that bulletin was released so I'm thinking that flash would have already been done at some point, except that I had not indicated this issue before. I have a note indicating the c147b but I'll have to ask them if the C1078 showed up in the stored DTCs. It wasn't mentioned to me. The bulletin describes conditions that seem to follow my situation right now. The description looks to be on target. Going by the shop tomorrow and will see what they pull up this time. Thank you. Closest I've seen to an explanation yet.

Update - Shop got the chance to read an active code for the "SERV AWD" light that came up on Wed. Still comes up as a c147b code - Front axle disconnect sensor circuit performance. Relay test, wires and related components checked and appear to be ok. Warning reset when I restarted the car. No DTC last two days but I haven't used the auto stick last 2 trips. I fully expect it will come up again next time I use the auto stick. Kori - No C1078 codes in the history.  

Most recent update: Culprit seems to be the "front axle disconnect solenoid". Took multiple trips to shop to figure that out. So I guess I need one of these: ACTUATOR. Axle Locker. For your 2011 Dodge Charger R/T Part Number: 68052258AA Includes Axle Disconnect Actuator and Solenoid. Not sure I need the actuator - just the solenoid. Not sure if that comes separate or not.

Yup, that's it. Replaced on Friday. Part made by Warn. So far so good. No more SERV AWD light. After I got back home I received a Recall notice in the mail from the factory for the alternator diode malfunction - but no parts available........SMH  

Did they have to flash anything with the replacement?? I have the new solenoid in my trunk but leery of them in the computer...I get 29 hwy and 22 city so awd isn't high on the priority list!!

From Googling around, looks like a $125-$150 part. I had wondered if the disconnect was on the T case end, or the axle end. Looks to me like it is at the differential, thereby disconnecting the driveshaft there. Don

X 2 on the front axle disconnect (or actuator) being bad. Don  

has anyone done this replacement themselves, curious if I can do it at home. I bought a scan tool that reads powertrain and abs codes, hoping it might throw a simple wheel sensor code, but I got nothing. Now im grasping at straws here, snow is coming, actually here. And I'm gonna replace my fluids this weekend and prolly try to replace the solenoid and actuator. Just hoping its something I can do. The dealership is all booked up for awhile, and they wont do scan work or other than oil changes and stuff on saturdays. But I work second shift so all I have is saturday and my charger is my only car.

Since nobody had ever replied with how easy/hard this is - I went checking before doing mine, and there's a 3 min youtube video that shows it. It's accessible and fairly easy to do

Anyone know of any common awd light issues? I definatly am not going into awd while this light is one. Funny thng is, that I never had any issues with it. I was just coming home from the store one day, and used my paddle shifters to downshift to pull into my driveway. I havent used them much at all really, like not in the last 2 years. Then my service awd light came on, and has been on since. I tried reading the codes with my intune2, but it just says there are no codes. Has anyone else had this happen? I hope its simple fix, cant clear the code because my intune2 doesnt see a code.

Small update on this. I bougth a scanner that can read abs codes and transmission codes hoping it might be a wheel speed sensor. But no codes, also checked the fuses and relay, all seems fine there. Next step is changing some fluids, doubt that will do anything, probably gonna have to buy and replace the actuator/ solenoid. If anyone else has some ideas to check first, it would be greatly appreciated. Just to mention too that when i have been shecking posts on the net about this, almost everyone states there serv awd light has came on off and on. Mine has never gone back off. It just came on one day and never went away, dont know if that makes a difference, but wanted to throw that out there.

99% of the time, it’s the front axle solenoid. Easy fix  

That has to be replaced with the actuator right, one piece? And i can do that at home right, on some ramps?

Just replaced the actuator/solenoid. Real easy. But the service awd light is still on, and now when i put it in gear i get a message saying the vehicle is not in park. Wtf? Anyone know whats going on?
