DAY 1 Burlington, VT to Portland, OR

Meet your Tour Manager at the Burlington Airport. Arrive in Portland, Oregon on the day before our scheduled cruise. The package includes a premium hotel stay, where you can enjoy the city at your leisure.

DAY 2 Hayden Island, OR

On the morning of the cruise, meet in the hotel lobby after breakfast and we will transport to the ship to begin our cruise at Hayden Island, Oregon. All luggage will be brought directly from the hotel and placed in your stateroom aboard the ship. Begin your river journey in this vibrant region with majestic Mount Hood serving as a stunning background. Situated between the waters of Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the area’s history is forever entwined with the fortunes of these great rivers. In the golden age of riverboats, sternwheelers crossed the waterfront while steam whistles and calliopes rang out across the water.

DAY 3  Astoria, OR

A nationally significant historic region at the western end of the Lewis & Clark Trail, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. In the winter of 1805-06, the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition was headquartered at Fort Clatsop. In 1955, a replica of the fort was built near the original site and was eventually named a National Monument. With its steep hills and beautiful Victorian homes, Astoria has been called the "Little San Francisco of the Pacific Northwest" and has a revitalized downtown ideal for shopping and dining.

DAY 4 Mount St. Helens, WA

Perhaps the most impactful of all landmarks in the region is Mount St. Helens. From high on an overlook, bear witness to the awesome power of the volcano whose eruption in 1980 scorched 230 square miles of forest land and forever changed the landscape. Expert guides will show you the pumice plain and lava dome as they explain the effect the volcano had on the lives of those in the surrounding towns.

May 18, 1980 is a day etched into the history of the United States, as the powerful eruption of Mont St. Helens drastically changed the landscape of what is now referred to as the National Volcanic Monument. On your scenic journey to the Mount St. Helens Johnston Ridge Observatory, your tour guide will provide engaging commentary regarding the eruption, how it affected the landscape and surrounding communities, and how the environment has responded naturally to the disturbance. The Observatory itself is on a bluff near the crater, offering spectacular view of the pumice plain and blast site.

DAY 5 Cruising the Columbia River Gorge / Stevenson, WA

The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. A popular recreational destination, the gorge holds federally protected status as a National Scenic Area. The cliffs of the gorge look down on quaint riverfront towns and exhilarating waterfalls.

A highlight of any trip to the Pacific Northwest is Multnomah Falls, the second tallest year-round waterfall in the U.S. After breakfast, our private guide will meet you at the ship’s dock along the Columbia River Gorge to begin your journey. As you wind through the thick forest, cross the impressive “Bridge of the Gods,” before finally reaching Multnomah Falls. Upon arrival, you will have time to explore the Falls on your own and walk the famous Benson Bridge to get the best vantage point for your photo opportunities.

DAY 6 The Dalles, OR

Located in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, between Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, on the south bank, The Dalles is a perfect photographic spot. Discover the area where Lewis & Clark camped at Rock Fort Camp during their historic journey to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory in 1805-1806.

DAY 7  Pendleton, OR / Richland, WA

Pendleton is known for its beautiful countryside, indigenous Native American tribes, and the network of underground tunnels created a century ago for illicit activities. The area is also famous for its lucrative wool trade in the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit The REACH Museum in Richland which illustrates the culture and history of the region through engaging exhibits, artifacts, and tours.

DAY 8 Cruising the Snake River

On your journey to Clarkston, WA, cruise the renowned Snake River along mountain ranges, canyons, and plains. Relax on the sundeck and view the spectacular wildlife that lives along its shores, including Otter, Coyote, Pronghorn, Deer, Coyote, Mountain Goat, and Marmots. You may also spot Osprey and Eagles and variety of different species of birds.

What you won’t see are snakes, as the river doesn’t actually have snakes in it, but rather an abundance of salmon. While some believe the river was called the Snake because of its shape that has many twists and winds, it is actually believed to have received its name from a Native American hand symbol.

DAY 9 Clarkston, WA

The twin cities of Lewiston, ID and Clarkston, WA, are known as the Northwest’s most inland seaports. Along the Snake River you’ll find Hells Canyon, the deepest canyon in North America. This canyon is known for its pristine scenery and thriving wildlife.

Conclude your incredible voyage in Clarkston, WA, named for William Clark of the historic Lewis and Clark Expedition. After breakfast, disembark the ship and begin your amazing Hells Canyon Jet Boat Adventure. Explore the deepest canyon in North America and admire breathtaking scenery, including bighorn sheep, ancient rock formations, and Native American pictographs. Along the way, be treated to lunch at a private ranch within the canyon.

In the afternoon, we will escort you to the Holiday Inn Clarkston-Lewiston, where your luggage will be waiting for you. Explore the charming towns of Clarkston and Lewiston at your leisure.

DAY 10  Clarkston, WA

Depart the hotel this morning for flights home.

Columbia and Snake Rivers Journey route map from Portland to Clarkston.

Arrive in Portland located on the Columbia and Willamette rivers, in the shadow of snow-capped Mt. Hood. The city is known for its eco-friendliness, microbreweries, and coffeehouses. National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion

lunch, dinner

Begin your journey by navigating the Columbia to the mouth of the river at Astoria. At Cape Disappointment where Meriwether Lewis saw the Pacific in November of 1805, explore the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center, see Cape Disappointment Lighthouse and the north jetty of the Columbia River Bar. Visit the Columbia River Maritime Museum, which chronicles the history of river navigation and all aspects of maritime commerce in the region. Hear harrowing stories of crossing “The Bar” at the mouth of the Columbia, one of the most dangerous passages in the world. In the afternoon explore the Astoria area with several options to choose from.

breakfast, lunch, dinner

Spend your morning visiting the stunning Columbia Gorge Interpretive Center in Stevenson, Washington, featuring 15,000 years of cultural and natural history of the Columbia Gorge with displays both inside and outside. Or trek up the iconic Beacon Rock, the 848-foot basalt column that once formed the core of an ancient volcano. Lewis and Clark camped here on their way west, and it was at Beacon Rock that they first noticed the tides affecting the water levels in the Columbia River, more than 120 miles from its mouth.

Continue through the Gorge to Hood River, located in the shadows of majestic Mount Hood where you will enjoy a farm-to-table orchard lunch overlooking the golden Hood River Valley. The valley is known for its fruit-growing orchards-including one of the world’s largest pear-growing areas. After lunch you’ll have the option to visit the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum and explore one of the largest collections of still-functioning antique cars and planes in the country, or trek through the Twin Mosier Tunnels on the old historic Columbia River Highway.

Spend the day cruising through some of the most scenic and geologically interesting stretches of the Columbia River and the Columbia Plateau. The onboard geologist and naturalists will talk with you about the Columbian Basalt Flows and the Missoula Floods that sculpted the landscape 13,000 years ago. Relive the historic tales of the Corps of Discovery through the eyes of the historian as you sail by landmarks from their epic journey. Or unwind with a massage from the wellness specialist.

The still water of the Palouse River is the perfect mirror for the surrounding basalt cliffs as we set off cruising on our Zodiac and kayak adventures. Visit Palouse Falls, where cascading waters plunge into the pool below. These falls and the canyon are an important feature of the channeled scablands created by the great Missoula Floods that swept periodically across the region. Afterwards, sail up the Snake River, enjoying a taste of local specialties.

At Clarkston, find yourselves at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers, more than 450 miles from the sea. Travel by comfortable jet boat up the Snake River into one of North America’s most scenic spots, spectacular Hells Canyon. The 125-mile long canyon was carved by the waters of the Snake River and at 7,993 feet is North America’s deepest river gorge—most of it inaccessible by road. The earliest known settlers in the canyon were the Nez Percé tribe and, as you travel up the river, look to the hillsides and see remnants of their ancestral horse trails along with pictographs and petroglyphs on the rock formations. In the afternoon, join your fellow travelers in the lounge for songs and stories by a local Nez Percé storyteller.

This evening, enjoy the company of a local winemaker onboard and sip of their wines while you hear about how the geology of the area surrounding the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA, the newest Viticultural Area in the United States, affects the flavors of their wines. (Note: Winemaker on board eastbound itinerary only.)

Reverse Fall Harvest Itinerary

The reverse, westbound Fall Harvest Cruise begins in Clarkston, Washington, and ends in Portland, Oregon. Cruise along the Columbia and Snake Rivers for 8 days with a special fall-time-only stop in Astoria, Oregon.

Choose to fly into nearby Lewiston, Idaho, or fly into Spokane, Washington, located two hours away and travel though the picturesque landscapes of the Palouse to Clarkston to board the vessel.

At Clarkston, find yourself at the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater rivers, more than 450 miles from the sea. The name Clarkston is in reference to William Clark and is located directly across the river from Lewiston, Idaho, which is named for Meriwether Lewis, though neither of them ever traveled to the Clarkston side of the river. Travel by comfortable jet boat into one of North America’s most scenic spots, spectacular Hells Canyon.  The 125-mile long canyon was carved by the waters of the Snake River and at 7,993 feet is North America’s deepest river gorge—most of it inaccessible by road. This afternoon, join your fellow travelers in the lounge for songs and stories by a local Nez Percé storyteller.

Set sail this evening on the Snake River, and overnight, transit two in the series of eight locks which will lower the ship some 700 feet as you make your way west, nearly 10 times that of the Panama Canal.

The still water of the Palouse River is the perfect mirror for the surrounding basalt cliffs as we set off cruising on our Zodiac and kayak adventures. Visit Palouse Falls, where cascading waters plunge 198 feet into the pool below. These falls and the canyon are an important feature of the channeled scablands created by the great Missoula Floods that swept periodically across the region. This evening, enjoy the company of a local brewer onboard and partake in some of their craft brews while you hear about how the microbrew industry got started in Hood River.

We begin our journey by navigating the Columbia to the mouth of the river at Astoria.

Main Spring Bloom Itinerary

The main, eastbound Spring Bloom Cruise begins in Portland, Oregon, and ends in Clarkson, Washington. Cruise along the Columbia and Snake Rivers for 8 days with a special spring-time-only stop in Walla Walla, Washington.

Route map of Spring Bloom departures of the Columbia & Snake Rivers Journey small ship cruise, operating between Portland, Oregon, and Clarkston, Washington, with visits along the Columbia, Hood & Palouse Rivers, including Walla Walla.

National Geographic Sea Bird

Gain a fresh perspective on such highlights as Bonneville Lock and Dam, Multnomah Falls and Beacon Rock (perhaps even hike it if desired). Bonneville is first in the series of eight locks that will lift or lower the ship some 700 feet above sea level—nearly 10 times that of the Panama Canal. Continue through the Gorge to Hood River, located in the shadows of majestic Mount Hood, with the option to see the spring bloom in the Hood River Valley. The valley is known for its fruit-growing orchards—including one of the world’s largest pear-growing areas. Visit the Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum and explore one of the largest collections of still functioning antique cars and planes or choose to do something more active in the area, like river rafting on the White Salmon River.

Drive through some of the most fertile agricultural areas in the nation, with bright, rolling green fields of sprouting wheat, asparagus, the famous Walla Walla Sweet Onions, and now the vineyards that bring Walla Walla world-wide recognition. Enjoy historic Walla Walla with a visit to the Whitman Mission, a National Historic Site, and the location of the 1847 attack on missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and 12 members of their household by a group of Cayuse seeking retribution for the spread of measles among their people and the inability of Whitman to heal the sick. Enjoy lunch and a tasting at a local winery.

This evening, enjoy the company of a local winemaker on board and sip of their wines while you hear about how the geology of the area surrounding the Lewis-Clark Valley AVA, the newest Viticultural Area in the United States, affects the flavors of their wines. (Note: Winemaker on board eastbound itinerary only.)

After breakfast this morning transfer to the airport for connecting flights home. Choose to fly from nearby Lewiston, Idaho, or travel though the picturesque landscapes of the Palouse to Spokane, Washington, located two hours away.

The main Spring Bloom Columbia & Snake Rivers Journey cruise begins in Portland, Oregon, and ends in Clarkston, Washington. Day 3 Sea Day Aboard the S.S. Legacy on a Columbia River Cruise

One of many old suspension bridges across the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Odd to think of a river cruise having a “sea day.”

But Un-Cruise Adventures has done just that. From the time we left Cascade Locks, Oregon and Multnomah Falls, the next 36 hours comprised a river day, cruising upstream on the Columbia River and eventually veering onto the narrower Snake River.

Altogether from Portland, within one and one-half days of eastbound travel on the Columbia and Snake Rivers, we transited a series of eight locks and rose a total of over 700-feet.

Destination Wilderness

Breakfast on our leisurely day at “sea” began with guests comparing lunar eclipse stories mixed with questions about sports results. Out here in the middle of nowhere, we were completely “off the grid.” No mobile/cellular/4G/LTE access for at least the next two days. It was interesting.

One thing that deserves mention is the complimentary 30-minute massage offered to all guests. People had signed up for spa appointments throughout the day. I’ve yet to partake but it’s on my to-do list. Maybe at week’s end.

Watching the river flow

With a glorious azure sky and September temperatures at record highs, almost everyone sat outside to watch as the S.S. Legacy transited locks, scooted under bridges and lazily motored upstream.

Guests milled about the boat, sampled complimentary whisky in the Pesky Barnacle Saloon and relaxed on the sundeck with hopes of spotting big-horn sheep that grazed precariously on the rocky cliffs or an assortment of raptors as they glided on the warm air currents through the Gorge.

A Lewis and Clark talk by Julie and Kenny, dressed in 1800s period clothing began at 10am in the lounge. Lunch in the dining room, an enriching locally-themed geology presentation at 2pm were followed by the ever-popular Cocktail Hour at 5:30.

Dinner at 6:30 rounded out the daylight hours. Everyone filed straight out from the Lounge to the dining room, most with drinks in hand.

Arts and Crafts Time for Adults

At 8pm, we’d head to the lounge to make beaded necklaces using similar glass beads and mollusk shells that the Nez Perce Indians used for their beadwork over a century ago.

It reminded me of my Girl Scout Leader days. Almost all of the necklace-makers were women, chatting and laughing and admiring everyone else’s projects.

A silly activity at best, it was a chance to simply sit around a community table and talk about oh…anything. Like pioneer families did in the days before computers and smart phones. It was a lot of old-fashioned fun.

Reflections on the Columbia and Snake rivers.

Another day drew to a close.

Slowly, as everyone finished their craft project, “good-nights” were said and the lounge was once again empty. At 9:30pm.

Overnight, we continued along the Snake River and by dawn we docked in Clarkston, Oregon. The next day would be spent zooming through rugged Hells Canyon National Recreation Area aboard jet boats at a rousing 30mph.

The weather forecast had called for an unseasonably warm and sunny day. Perfect for early morning, outdoor, nature-type activities.

Day 1: Columbia and Snake River Cruise Begins Day 2: Bonneville Dam and towering Multnomah Falls Day 3: A relaxing “sea” day on the river. Today! Day 4: Jet Boating through Hell’s Canyon Day 5: Walla Walla Wineries, the Whitmans and the Oregon Trail Day 6: Maryhill Museum, The Dalles and a real Stonehenge. Day 7: Following Lewis and Clark to Fort Clatsop and a visit to Astoria, Oregon
