hey all, just wondering if anyones tried the marzocchi super monster? just saw them online and just wondering whats the deal with them. cheers

Bwahahaha!!!! Tavel is measured in meters and weight in tonnes. That's all I'm saying, never tried them as you really don't need that much travel and I've seen complete bikes that weighed less.

This is actually copy and pasted from an online retailer. About sums it up really. Super-Monster T-A fork, Coil 300mm blk/sil Travel: 300mm (11.81") Spring type: coil Damping: HSCV Adjustability: external rebound + high/low compression Brake mount: disc only (8" PM) Dropout: 20x110mm thru-axle Axle-crown: 692.6mm Weight: HEAVY Color: silver/black I love the listed weight!!

haha yer, dam near 6kg. look like a monter too. what bikes would take these? would need a Very slack head angle.

Oh I should probably mention that Joshy Bender isn't a Dwarf, look at the rear wheel (with 3" tyres) as a point of reference! Oh and other way around mate, longer fork will further slacken the head angle.

^^^ I'm not sure what's the funniest bit, the fact that it probably needs the 6 pot brakes, the high-rise stem and riser bar combo ontop of 4foot long forks or that they managed to find the only non-glamourous Marzocchi girl in existence!

Damn...How about the double shock on that bike (third link). Who comes up with this crazy stuff?

Super Monster and Monster T (2002+) are the same chassis with only internal differences (springs and damper rods IIRC). So you can shorten them to 200mm travel pretty simply. Question of course is why you'd bother. Steering precision would be unmatched but the weight is just ridiculous. That said...I was surprised they built the 888 which, weight for weight is noodly and weak. If they built a modern monster with a single, ti spring, single damper I'd bet they could do it an easy 1.5kg or more lighter. I had a 2000 170mm Monster T, it was 4.4kg (the 2002+ ones are ~5.5kg). That is certainly a lot, but consider that it ran nearly 1.5 litres of fork oil, two full length steel springs and two complete damper assemblies.

Just back from Dalton Hwy run on 05.5 950S. dinged fork tube and second set of fork seals leaking. Apparently mine is the expensive year to extend travel, according to Super Plush. Lots of SX's & MXCs being parted out. Has anyone created a matrix of WP 4860 versions? It would be nice to go longer for less than $1200. Thanks

I went from 245mm to 265mm on my baja, what a difference it made, I too would like to see what 300mm would be like. But I'm 6'5" and think the 265mm is getting hard to straddle the bike.

Ryno041

I have a 990 baja. Came stock with 210mm. I had Precision Concepts extend mine to 276mm. Stock brake cables work fine, any longer and I would need extended front ones though. They said I could also go up to 301mm, at the time I chose not to, but after having put 17000 miles on my bike, I wish I would have most of the time. But mine does handle amazing in the dirt, and maybe another inch of travel would just give me that extra little speed I shouldn't have on a 500lb bike! lol I'm 6'1 and can still touch the ground just fine. I was mainly concerned about that and handling on the street. I grew up desert racing, so I was far more concerned with the bike handling well in the rough stuff. I have a set of 17/19 full street wheels I use for touring and commuting and a 18/21 full dirt set with rally spec rims for ADV/ dirt rides. Works great with both. But to answer your question, yes it can be done with just a few different cartridges, springs, and such sourced from other KTM bikes. Precision charged me well under $2k for the job also. I think it was like $1600. Ask for Diane, she will be able to reference my Bike, Ryan Kennedy.

Reviving this thread once again to see what the latest thoughts on 300mm suspension are. Might want to go this direction in the near future depending on how the current suspension works out...

Well i´ve never had the possibility to ride the 270-300mm suspenders. I would have liked to try the 300mm system @DistortedAxis mounted. It seems to be the one to go for. Suspension isn´t really a place to half-rep. Though i might be able to provide some review on the Unicorn 320mm suspenders from Poskitt. Pro: They are good. They are so much way better than the original i got setup from SPS. The faster i go, the more accurate i can ride em. To use them 100%(which i can´t) you need to be on the gas. This counts for both off and on road. My fat bike is really figting these with its 215kg. These are build to go fast on the beach where ups and downs will come at you very fast. Gas it and go through. When other Advs parks there bike near this...You think Baja truck vs Jimny Cons: They are long. Mucho long. If you don´t like or can accept the occasional one foot-technique at the lights or starbucks. Tight turns on tar. My bikes 100nm from iddle will compress the rear a lot. In general i think my bike is to strong...and heavy. You get used to it, but not a novice bike. Not that it is to much KW, kg or height. It is the 3 combined. Slow speed in technical stuff. Unique. I have had issues but there isn´t much help to get as the builder is hammering the world. I would like the Poskitt KTM 730 Adv instead.... ;-) Video from the summer. Before i deployed...again. Next summer ill be more offroading. This was just a quick top of the head ramble. My review might not suit your bike as it is an odd bike. I think its a bit more heavy than the 950/990. But in the ball park. We all know nothing comes close to a well setup LC8 boingers. It cost a lot of money but they are so much more bike with correct setup. With my current knowledge and i should buy a 790 Adv. I would like to buy it without Wheels and Suspenders. I would dump all my money into that at first.

I have the forks on my SE changed to 300mm travel with 5.2N/mm springs and the rear to ~280mm (ADV shock) with a 265mm/130Nmm spring. I used to brace for impact seeing a pothole, now not needed anymore. It is incredible how much faster you can go without problems. Yes, it is high but I can still reach the ground on both sides.

Combination of KTM / WP internals with get you to 300. Rear shocks the hardest part. The original suspension damping and springing is not set up for off road so if your on a budget a correctly set up 265 bike is a world away from the standard Pogo stick
So......... For the forks, are we talking about a complete EXC cartridge drop in ? and, whats the go with the shock ? a longer body tube & shaft perhaps or just internal spacers ? Anyone ? I did the suspension job myself on my old 05.5 950 from standard to 'S' & from memory, there was a 20 or 25mm spacer in the rear shock that I had to replace with a 10mm spacer that got me to 245mm. I havnt had my 265mm 07 'S' shock apart yet, but Id be curious to know what sort of spacer is in there.

I did not do it myself but for the front I think you need longer hydro stop, internal tube and longer springs (5.2Nmm in my case). On the rear you only need to replace the thick rebound shim to a thin one (I went from 26mm to 1mm by head) and mount a longer (and softer) spring (130N/mm 265mm in my case).
Thanks! By longer internal tube you mean cartridge? Would be cool if others who did the similar upgrade chime in with part numbers so other can benefit of it cheers Dooby
I got distortedaxis bill on the build. I will ask if i can reveal it.

Gezwindespoed and me filled a complete topic on a Dutch offroad messageboard with partno's and stuff to do the mod to 300mm front and 275mm rear. If I have time tonight or tomorrow I fill write it down here. I still have to do it myself this winter.... :) One thing that I know is that the front fender will be lower than the uper section of the forks, so exposing the fork seals and legs to stones and crap. Something needs to be done there.

300mm dropper with internal routing, does it exist?

  • Add to quote

My wife just got a S Trance advanced and it came with the Giant dropper, 4 inch drop and 345mm. It does not go down quite low enough as the frame design does not have much room for a seatpost. For this reason a non-dropper would not really work either as it could only be raised and lowered about 3 inches. As her legs are short, a 75mm dropper would be OK. The only post I saw around 300mm is the KS Supernatural. Her bike does not appear to have routing for an external post and I hate to zip tye it on. Is there something this short with external routing? thanks

300mm travel bike

You need a longer legged wife. I know you probably decided for her before dropper posts became mainstream but things have changed since then. If even the older 75mm Giant dropper post doesn't fit your wife she's too short for mountainbiking.

where would one find one of these 75mm giant droppers? Edit - just checked , the old 75mm one is 350 long, the same as the new 100mm one. The problem is the frame is really too big but she wanted as long of reach as possible while still having enough standover. The Small Trance was the best for this. I can get the post plenty low if I chop a normal post but then it will not go up much. Really she just needs to go lower for our upcoming trip to Whistler so I might have to go that route.

if dropping the saddle is most important for her simply buy a "manual" dropper then (= a tube inside a tube with a quick release) they sell cheap and can be shortened for perfect length

I see the Specialized command post comes in 75mm. Too bad I cannot find the length of it anywhere.

340mm

i dont know about internal routing but gravity dropper has some with 275mm and 300mm

My wife is 5' 1" and also rides a Trans size S. When selecting a dropper not only the total lenght is important but how much exposed seatpost. With the Giant dropper the exposed seatpost is quite long and can't be inserted enough, even the 75mm drop one. So I installed a KS Lev integra 100mm. It fits her quite well and It could be pushed in about 1/2 in more. Hope this helps.

You're very right about the old 75mm Giant dropper but total length of KS LEV Integra 100mm = 342mm so that doesn't fit either

Universal showed the ks inegra as 335, if correct that is just 10mm since here Giant is 345. Her seat is real tall also, mine is 3/8 lower so I could probably get as much as half an inch with the right seat. I really like the 300mm of the Supernatural as I know it would be plenty low, just wish it had internal routing.

I came here wondering if someone had released a dropper with 300mm travel. I am disappointed.

no but there's a 200mm dropper

300mm travel bike

No, many frames have just too much seat tube length for me to use a 150. At 5'9.5" insertion has never been an issue.

300mm travel bike

KS dropzone comes in a 300mm/75mm and it is a lever under the seat, no cable routing. not great for everyday riding, but for downhill where you are not going up and down a lot mostly leaving it down for an entire down hill, it should be fine.

dropper post with lever under the seat is soo 2010...

9 Point 8 has 325/75 mm dropper with internal routing.

300mm travel bike

I've been on that waiting list for months!

The LBS we got the bike from has the command post with internal routing and 75mm travel. It was said to be 340mm upthread, but I read that it is 310 in another thread. My guess is that the main shaft is 310 but the long cable hanger makes it 340. So I will head to the LBS and see if the cable hanger part fits past the axle shaft in the seat tube.

I ended up getting the command post. The seat is now 3/4" lower.
