Elvis Presley - Jailhouse Rock (1957)

The warden threw a party in the county jail The prison band was there, and they began to wail The band was jumpin', and the joint began to swing You should've heard them knocked out jailbirds sing

Let's rock Everybody, let's rock Everybody in the whole cell block Was dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Spider Murphy played the tenor saxophone Little Joe was blowin' on the slide trombone The drummer boy from Illinois went crash, boom, bang The whole rhythm section was the Purple Gang

Number forty-seven said to number three "You're the cutest jailbird I ever did see" "I sure would be delighted with your company" "Come on and do the Jailhouse Rock with me"

Sad Sack was sittin' on a block of stone Way over in the corner weepin' all alone The warden said, "Hey, buddy, don't you be no square "If you can't find a partner use a wooden chair"

Shifty Henry said to Bugs "For Heaven's sake" "No one's lookin', now's our chance to make a break" Bugsy turned to Shifty and he said, "Nix nix" "I wanna stick around awhile and get my kicks"

Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock Dancin' to the Jailhouse Rock

Take a look inside Graceland, the Memphis mansion that Elvis Presley called home. His granddaughter is fighting a forced sale.

  • Graceland is the 13.8-acre estate in Memphis, Tennessee, that Elvis Presley once called home.
  • The King of Rock 'n' Roll lived in the house from 1957 until his death in 1977.
  • Now, Presley's granddaughter is fighting to stop an auction of the estate.

It's been 47 years since Elvis Presley died, but legions of fans still flock to Memphis, Tennessee, to see the sprawling Graceland estate the star once called home.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Per the official Graceland website , Presley lived in the mansion from 1957 until his death in 1977. Located off a highway that was renamed Elvis Presley Boulevard in 1971, the two-story residence sits on 13.8 acres of land.

Since 1982, Graceland has operated as a museum dedicated to the star. Ticket packages offer access to the mansion, with prices for adults starting at $82. According to the website , it has hosted over 20 million visitors from across the globe.

On May 19, 2024, a public notice announced the foreclosure sale of the property, claiming that Promenade Trust — which operates Graceland — owes Naussany Investments and Private Lending $3.8 million to repay a loan that Presley's late daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, took out in May 2018.

However, Lisa Marie's daughter, the actor Riley Keough, filed a lawsuit to prevent the auction of the estate, alleging that the signatures on the loan documents were forged.

A temporary restraining order was granted, delaying the auction. An injunction hearing is scheduled for May 22, per USA Today .

Also known as the "King of Rock 'n' Roll," Presley was a cultural icon of the 20th century.

Presley was born on January 8, 1935, in Mississippi. Heavily influenced by the country, gospel, and blues music that he listened to as a child, Presley started his singing career in 1954.

With hits such as "Hound Dog" and "Can't Help Falling in Love with You," he would go on to become one of the most successful performers of all time, with 14 Grammy nominations and millions of records sold, per the Recording Academy .

On August 16, 1977, Presley collapsed in his Graceland home and was found unconscious by his girlfriend, Ginger Alden. She documented the moment she found him on the master bathroom floor in her 2014 memoir, The Mirror reported.

According to The New York Times , coroners pronounced him dead on the same day, with the official cause of death attributed to heart failure. He was 42 years old.

Presley purchased the Graceland estate in 1957 for $102,500.

45 tours d'elvis presley

The Colonial Revival-style mansion, which was built in 1939, has eight bedrooms and four bathrooms, The Guardian reported after a tour of the house. About half of the 23 rooms in the house are off-limits to visitors, including the entire second floor — where the star's master suite is located.

According to the Graceland website , visitors are only allowed access to common spaces, including the living room, the kitchen, and the TV room. Spanning 17,552 square feet, the sprawling residence has five sets of staircases, three fireplaces, and a kidney-shaped swimming pool.

Presley frequently had friends and family over at the mansion, including an entourage of confidants and associates the media dubbed the " Memphis Mafia ." Some members of the group were childhood friends of Presley's, including his bodyguards Red and Sonny West.

In 2006, Graceland was designated a National Historic Landmark, per the National Park Service .

One of the most iconic features of Graceland is the entrance gate. Designed to resemble a musical score, there are figures on the gate depicting the star with his guitar.

45 tours d'elvis presley

According to the museum's website , Presley had the gate — which cost $1,339 — installed shortly after he purchased the residence. Throngs of fans would wait by the gate in hopes of catching a glimpse of their idol. Occasionally, he would also sign autographs for them through the gate.

"Back in the day, if you were ever at the gates of Graceland and you saw the cars around the front of the mansion, that meant Elvis was home," Angie Marchese — the Graceland archivist — told The Daily Express .

The brick wall that surrounds the estate is also popular with fans, the website states. Over the years, it has been covered in personal messages that fans have left in memory of their idol.

The interiors of Graceland are lavishly decorated. The living area has a custom-built 15-foot sofa and a 10-foot coffee table.

45 tours d'elvis presley

The sofa was originally a metallic blue, but Presley later had it reupholstered in white — which is what it still looks like today, per the Graceland website . He added the stained-glass windows in 1974 and chose to use a peacock design, which symbolizes eternal life and resurrection in ancient Christianity.

The dining room, which has black marble flooring in the center, was a place for Presley and his friends to gather.

45 tours d'elvis presley

"Elvis sat at the head of the table because it did give him one of the best views of the TV that's over to the corner on the right," Marchese said during a 2020 Instagram Live on the estate's official account .

She added that there was also a button under the table where they could call the kitchen for more food.

One of the most famous rooms in Graceland is the Jungle Room.

45 tours d'elvis presley

The room's name only came about after the mansion opened to the public.

Presley personally picked out the Polynesian-inspired furniture because it reminded him of Hawaii, which was his favorite holiday spot, per the museum's website . He installed a waterfall and covered the room with plants to complete the look.

A shag carpet covers both the floor and the ceiling, per the website. This soundproofed the room and allowed Presley to turn the space into a makeshift recording studio. Presley recorded some of the songs on his album "From Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee," here.

The pool room features fabric-lined walls and ceiling, which took 10 days to install.

45 tours d'elvis presley

The Graceland website states that Presley worked with a designer, Bill Eubanks, to develop the room's concept.

A crew of three was needed to cut and attach 350 to 400 yards of cotton fabric strips to the walls and ceiling.

Presley died upstairs in his master suite, and it has been preserved exactly as he left it.

45 tours d'elvis presley

"It looks as if he just got up and left," Marchese said during the 2020 Instagram Live. "The record on the record player is the last record he listened to. There's a styrofoam cup that sits on a bookshelf."

Towards the end of his life, Presley spent much of his time holed up in his bedroom upstairs, especially if he was "in pyjamas or unshaven," Alden told The Daily Express .

The TV room, which is designed in a navy, white, and yellow color scheme, has three television sets.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Inspired by US President Lyndon Johnson, who liked to watch three news broadcasts simultaneously, Presley also wanted three television sets in his TV room, per the official Graceland website .

Although the upper floor remains off-limits, Presley's office desk has been brought down and turned into an exhibit for fans to see.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Presley's record label, RCA, gave him the desk as a gift for selling one million copies of the "Blue Hawaii" soundtrack, Marchese told The Daily Express .

Presley's gold records are on display in the Hall of Gold in the Trophy Building.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Presley constructed a new wing in the mansion in the mid-1960s to store a slot car track, as stated in Graceland's National Historic Landmark Nomination application .

Connected to the main house via a sheltered walkway, the estate renamed the new wing the "Trophy Building" and remodeled it to house his awards.

The estate updated the building in 2017 to feature an exhibit that focuses on Presley's personal life and his family, per the Graceland website . Some items on display include his wedding outfit, family photos, and his daughter's childhood toys.

Presley enjoyed playing racquetball. After he died, the racquetball building was transformed into an additional trophy hall for a few years.

45 tours d'elvis presley

The entire room was filled with posthumous awards and included a display of his famous jumpsuits, per the museum's website . In 2017, the racquetball court was restored to its original condition and all the trophies were moved into a new exhibit.

Presley has been laid to rest alongside his parents on the grounds of the Graceland estate, in the Meditation Garden.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Elvis Week, which commemorates the anniversary of Presley's death, takes place between August 9 and August 17, per the museum's website .

Every year, fans from around the world flock to Graceland to leave flowers at his grave. The estate hosts around 500,000 visitors every year.

Presley's only daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, is also buried in Graceland, next to her late son Benjamin Keough and close to her father.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Lisa Marie Presley died on January 12, 2023, at 54. The announcement of her death came hours after her mother, Priscilla Presley, confirmed she had been rushed to the hospital.

In an August 2022 essay she wrote for People Magazine , Lisa Marie spoke about grief and how she was "destroyed" by her son Benjamin Keough's death. She also blamed herself "every single day."

Keough died by suicide in July 2020 , at 27, and was buried at Graceland.

In January 2023, a representative for Riley Keough, Lisa Marie's eldest daughter, confirmed in a statement to BI that her mother would be buried next to her son.

Elvis Presley saw a resurgence in popularity in 2022 when the Baz Luhrmann movie, "Elvis," starring Austin Butler and Tom Hanks, came out in theaters.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Members of the cast showed up at Graceland for the Memphis premiere of the film on June 12, 2022, per the daily Memphis newspaper The Commercial Appeal .

A press junket to promote the film was also in the screening, including a GMA interview with Tom Hanks and Austin Butler recorded in the Jungle room.

News and analysis from the day’s top stories., elvis presley’s granddaughter claims fake company is using forged documents to sell graceland.

45 tours d'elvis presley

By Clarissa-Jan Lim

Actor Riley Keough , the granddaughter of Elvis Presley and heir to the Presley family trust, has filed a lawsuit to prevent Graceland from being sold at public auction.

The auction had been set to be held on Thursday, but a judge in Memphis, Tennessee, granted Keough, the sole trustee of Promenade Trust — which manages Graceland — a temporary restraining order as her lawsuit moves forward.

Naussany Investments and Private Lending, the company seeking to auction off Graceland, claimed that Keough's mother, Lisa Marie Presley, had borrowed $3.8 million and put the property up as collateral. A public notice that Graceland was to be auctioned had gone out to local media on Sunday, The Guardian reported . The notice reportedly cited an unpaid loan from 2018.

Keough’s complaint alleges that the documents of the purported loan, including those bearing Lisa Marie Presley’s signature, are fake. It also claims that Naussany Investments and Private Lending “is not a real entity” and that it was created “for the purpose of defrauding the Promenade Trust, the heirs of Lisa Marie Presley, or any other purchaser of Graceland at a non-judicial sale.”

Elvis Presley at Graceland.

Keough is seeking to have the deed of trust be declared “fraudulent, void and unenforceable.”

Naussany Investments did not respond to NBC News' request for comment , and Kurt Naussany, who is named in the suit as a defendant and a representative of the company, told NBC News that he left the firm in 2015 and should not be named in the complaint.

Elvis Presley lived in the Memphis estate from 1957 until his death on the property 20 years later. He is buried at Graceland alongside other family members, including Keough's brother, Benjamin Keough, who died by suicide in 2020.

After several bouts of financial trouble , executors of Presley's estate, including his ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, opened Graceland to the public in 1982. Lisa Marie Presley assumed full control of the trust when she turned 25. Keough inherited the trust after her mother died suddenly last year.

Graceland is one of the most-visited home tours in the country, with 500,000 visitors every year, its website says . It also claims that the property is the most famous home in the U.S. after the White House.

Judge temporarily stops Graceland sale after Elvis’s granddaughter sues

Riley Keough says a creditor falsely claimed Lisa Marie Presley owed millions as part of a scheme to defraud the family out of her grandfather’s famous estate.

45 tours d'elvis presley

Elvis Presley’s granddaughter is suing to try to keep her grandfather’s legendary Graceland estate in the King of Rock-and-Roll’s family.

In a lawsuit filed last week, actress Riley Keough asked a Shelby County, Tenn., court to stop what she called a fraudulent sale, after a lender claimed that Keough’s mother, Lisa Marie Presley, took out a $3.8 million loan and that the family failed to pay it back.

A foreclosure auction had been scheduled for Thursday, but in court Wednesday morning, a judge temporarily delayed the sale, sustaining his previously issued temporary injunction until a future hearing. Keough became the sole owner of the Memphis mansion last year after the death of her mother in January 2023.

Here’s what to know:

  • Naussany Investments & Private Lending LLC, the creditor behind the foreclosure, claims it made a $3.8 million loan agreement with Lisa Marie Presley in 2018 that she failed to repay. She used Graceland as collateral, the creditor says. The loan agreement bears the signature of a Florida notary, Kimberly Philbrick.
  • Keough alleged in the lawsuit filed in Shelby County Chancery Court that her mother never borrowed any money from Naussany Investments and never gave a deed of trust to the company, contrary to the creditor’s claims.
  • Keough’s attorney also alleged that Naussany Investments “is not a real entity.” Instead, the lawsuit said, it appears that the company was created to defraud the family. “These documents are fraudulent,” wrote Keough’s attorney Jeff Germany, who did not respond to a request for comment.
  • Philbrick, the notary, wrote in an affidavit accompanying Keough’s lawsuit that she never signed the loan agreement and never met Presley. “I do not know why my signature appears on this document,” she wrote.
  • Shelby County Chancery Court Chancellor JoeDae L. Jenkins said Wednesday in court that he was deferring ruling on the case in part because no representatives for Naussany Investments were present and Keough’s attorney needed to provide more evidence.

Naussany Investments had in recent months pressed the family to pay back the alleged loan, filing a collections claim in a Los Angeles County court in September. The family refused. This month, the creditor posted a public notice of a foreclosure sale scheduled for Thursday.

In that notice, Naussany Investments sought to hold an estate sale outside the Shelby County Courthouse to the “highest and best bidder.” Keough’s suit seeks to stop that sale.

Brad Russell, an attorney for Naussany Investments, said he had no comment on the matter because of the ongoing case. Kurt Naussany, who is also listed as a defendant in the suit, did not respond to a request for comment.

Elvis Presley Enterprises said in a statement that it supported Keough’s allegations.

“Elvis Presley Enterprises can confirm that these claims are fraudulent,” the organization said. “There is no foreclosure sale. Simply put, the counter lawsuit has been filed to stop the fraud.”

Following Jenkins’s ruling Wednesday, the organization said Graceland would continue to operate.

“As the court has now made clear, there was no validity to the claims,” Elvis Presley Enterprises said in a statement Wednesday morning.

Important context

The ownership of the late rock star’s famous Memphis mansion has a tense legal history. Elvis Presley’s will appointed his father, his grandmother and his only child, Lisa Marie, as the beneficiaries of his estate.

In 1993, Lisa Marie Presley, the only one of the initial trustees still alive, appointed her mother, Priscilla Presley, as one of two co-trustees, along with business manager Barry Siegal.

But when Lisa Marie died last year, her mother said she found an amendment to the will that replaced her and Siegal as trustees with Keough and her brother Benjamin Keough, who died in 2020. After a months-long dispute, Riley Keough agreed in a settlement to pay her grandmother a lump-sum payment and keep Priscilla Presley as a “special adviser” to the trust.

Keough, in turn, would be the sole trustee of the Promenade Trust, which oversees the Graceland museum, and be charged with safeguarding the money.

Since opening to the public in 1982, Graceland has hosted more than 20 million visitors, according to its website, and now averages more than 500,000 each year. It is one of the most visited home tours in the United States.

Riley Keough Slams "Fraudulent" Attempt to Sell Elvis Presley's Graceland Property in Lawsuit

Elvis presley's granddaughter riley keough has filed a lawsuit to stop a foreclosure sale of graceland, saying that the claims related to the sale are fraudulent..

Riley Keough  is hoping she can return this auction to sender.

The  Daisy Jones & the Six  star has filed a lawsuit to halt a proposed foreclosure sale of her grandfather  Elvis Presley 's iconic Graceland home, saying that the lender attempting to carry out the auction of the property is using forged signatures on a non-existent loan, according to court documents obtained by  NBC News .

"Elvis Presley Enterprises can confirm that these claims are fraudulent," the entity that runs Graceland and the Elvis Presley Trust said in a statement to NBC News May 21. "There is no foreclosure sale. Simply put, the counter lawsuit has been filed is to stop the fraud."

The self-described lender, named in the lawsuit as Naussany Investments and Private Lending LLC, is the same private lender  that filed a lawsuit against the estate  of Riley's late mother  Lisa Marie Presley  in September, alleging that she had failed to pay pack a $3.8 million loan  before her death in January of last year  and had used the Memphis, Tenn., property as collateral.

However Riley, who gained control of Graceland following her mother's death, said in her lawsuit that the $3.8 million loan never happened, because her mother never gave her signature. And according to the  Zola  actress, the creditor doesn't exist and the loan was never notarized.

In fact, her new lawsuit alleges a foreclosure sale—originally set for May 23—would be "non-judicial" and the lien paperwork actually violates Tennessee law.

E! News has reached out to Riley's lawyers as well as Naussany Investments for comment, but has not heard back.

Riley's attorneys confirmed to NBC News that a temporary restraining order had been granted in the case, but said further judgements would be declared following a court hearing set for May 22.

As for Riley, the 34-year-old has gone through her fair share of legal troubles surrounding the Graceland estate, as she also faced a dispute with grandmother  Priscilla Presley  over her role as the heir to the Graceland estate as stipulated in mother Lisa Marie's will. But the two were able to come to an agreement that didn't put a strain on their relationship, according to Riley.

"There was a bit of upheaval, but now everything's going to be how it was,"  she explained to  Vanity Fair  in August . "She's a beautiful woman, and she was a huge part of creating my grandfather's legacy and Graceland. It's very important to her. He was the love of her life. Anything that would suggest otherwise in the press makes me sad because, at the end of the day, all she wants is to love and protect Graceland and the Presley family and the legacy."

To get an inside look at Graceland, keep reading.

(E! and NBC News are both part of the NBCUniversal family.)

Elvis Presley was just 22 years old when he bought his Graceland home in Memphis, Tenn., on March, 25, 1957. The singer paid $102,500 for the property, which already had its famous moniker. The home's previous owners Dr. Thomas Moore and his wife Ruth named the mansion after Ruth's aunt, Grace Toof, when they build the Colonial Revival style home in 1939.

Sadly, the legend died of a heart attack at Graceland on Aug. 16, 1977, when he was only 42.

In the wake of Lisa Marie Presley 's death at age 54 on Jan. 12, Graceland was inherited by her three daughters — Riley Keough and Harper and Finley Lockwood —a representative for Graceland confirmed to E! News.

Lisa Marie took complete ownership of the home when she turned 25 in February 1993. Graceland also serves as the location for Lisa Marie's final resting place, a rep for Riley confirmed to E! News. She was buried alongside her father and her son, Benjamin Keough , who died by suicide in 2020 at age 27.

Graceland welcomes over 600,000 visitors each year and is the most famous home in America after The White House. It was named to the American National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

The property offers ticketed visits for guests to see Elvis' jumpsuits and classic car collection, as well as his personal home, Vernon Presley 's business office, Elvis' trophy building, his racquetball center and the meditation garden, where the King of Rock and Roll was laid to rest.

When Elvis first purchase the home it was 10,266 square feet. Today, it's now expanded to 17,552 square feet on 13.8 acres of land.

When the "Jailhouse Rock" singer was at the home, the weekly grocery bill was around $500, according to David Adler 's book, The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley . The specific items to be stored in the Graceland kitchen at all times included a case of Pepsi, steak, hamburger buns, cans of sauerkraut, wieners, at least six cans of biscuits, brownies, banana pudding, lean bacon, mustard, ice cream, fudge cookies, brownies, and assorted fresh fruit.

In addition to five staircases and three fireplaces, the home also has a billIards room and a lair that Elvis referred to as "The Den". Complete with a waterfall, wooden walls, a grass shag carpet and plastic foliage, fans began calling it "the Jungle Room" when Graceland was opened to public visitors in 1982.

According to Rolling Stone, Elvis turned the oasis into a temporary  studio to record 16 songs that were released on 1976's Elvis Presley Boulevard, Memphis, Tennessee , and 1977's Moody Blue .

The official Elvis Instagram account revealed that the Heartbreak Hotel actor was "a huge TV junkie" and "actually had 14 TV screens set up all around the Graceland mansion."

His programming of choice? "He loved to watch football," the caption read, "and prime-time favorites like Laugh-In , The Untouchables , The Tonight Show and The Match Game ."

Though Elvis and Priscilla Presley divorced in 1973, she became a co-executor of Graceland  after the 1979 death of the singer's father, Vernon Presley . She has been instrumental in keeping the estate up and running as a tourist destination and her ex one of the highest-earning deceased celebrities of all time.

Judge pauses auction of Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion

M EMPHIS, Tenn. ( NewsNation ) —  A Tennessee judge agreed Wednesday to delay an auction of Graceland,  the historic home of Elvis Presley , as Presley’s estate fights to prove the foreclosure proceedings are fraudulent.

“The court will adjourn the sale as requested because the real estate is considered unique under Tennessee law and, being unique, the loss of the real estate would cause (significant) harm,” Chancellor Joe Dae Jenkins said.

Wednesday’s hearing came after a temporary restraining order was granted Monday to stop the auction, according to an attorney for heir Riley Keough, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter.

A  notice published this month  stated Graceland and the surrounding acreage on Elvis Presley Boulevard in Memphis, Tennessee, was set to be sold off for cash at a foreclosure auction Thursday.

The Shelby County Register of Deeds said the office has no record on file of a deed related to Graceland, NewsNation affiliate WREG reported .

Naussany Investments, the company that threatened to sell Graceland, told NewsNation Wednesday that it won’t move forward with any claims; however, they allege Lisa Marie Presley didn’t repay a loan.

“Due to the Deed of Trust not being recorded and the loan being obtained in a different state, legal action would have to be filed in multiple states and NAUSSANY Investments & Private Lending will not acquire to proceed. That comes from consultation of the lawyers for the company. There was no harm meant on Ms. Keough for her mother’s LMP mishabits and mismanaging of money. The company will be withdrawing all claims with prejudice.”

The Memphis Police Department told NewsNation they wouldn’t initiate a fraud investigation because “At this time this is a civil matter. There haven’t been any reports filed.”

Graceland allegedly used as collateral on a loan

The legal notice claims Lisa Marie Presley signed a deed of trust in 2018, securing a $3.8 million loan with a Missouri company called Naussany Investments and Private Lending, using Graceland as collateral. The company alleges she never paid the money back before she died.

However, Keough, Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter, said in a 60-page lawsuit filed against Naussany Investments on May 15 that her mother never borrowed any money from the company.

Keough claims Lisa Marie Presley’s signatures on the deed are forgeries, and that Naussany Investments is not a real entity. According to the suit, the notary involved in the deed denies that she notarized Lisa Marie Presley’s signature or ever met her.

NewsNation hasn’t been able to contact anyone representing Naussany Investments, and the company’s lawyers are not listed in court records.

A number listed for Naussany was not in service, WREG reported.

Lisa Marie Presley died in January 2023. Keough became heir to the estate and trustee of the Promenade Trust.
