The England cricket team toured Pakistan from October to December 2005. England were looking to maintain the form that had taken them to second place in the ICC Test Championship, and to victory in the 2005 Ashes series at home to Australia, but they suffered a sharp reversal of fortune, losing the test series 2-0 to Pakistan.

Match Report

 At Multan, November 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 2005. Pakistan won by 22 runs. Toss: Pakistan. Test debut: S. D. Udal.

England’s failure to secure victory in yet another thrilling Test match left them in a state of disbelief, highlighting the progress they had made as a team. Following their success in the Ashes, they had appeared to possess the crucial attribute of “mental toughness” in abundance. However, it was the Pakistani side, often considered less resilient, that emerged triumphant, led by their captain, Inzamam-ul-Haq, as they clinched a 22-run victory early on the final afternoon.

The turning point of the match occurred during the morning session. England, chasing a target of 198, were well placed at 64 for one before losing five wickets in the span of ten overs. This sudden collapse left them reeling at 101 for six, making the task ahead too daunting to overcome. Some of the dismissals were characterized by careless batting, squandering the hard-earned advantage they had built over the first four days after losing the toss. In the previous year, England had often managed to salvage favorable results on the final day, but this time their efforts fell short.

Marcus Trescothick assumed the captaincy for the second time in a Test match, as Michael Vaughan was sidelined with a knee injury. Concerns were expressed in certain quarters regarding Trescothick’s suitability as a stand-in captain, but those doubts were swiftly dispelled. He led the team with tactical acumen and set an example with a magnificent innings of 193 in their first innings, overshadowing all other contributions. What many were unaware of at the time was that Trescothick was dealing with a personal crisis. His father-in-law had suffered a severe head injury from a fall and was in critical condition at a hospital in Bristol. The situation was grave enough for Trescothick to contemplate returning home, but ultimately he chose to remain with the team. In Vaughan’s absence, Ian Bell, initially dropped from the side, was reinstated. Additionally, Shaun Udal, a 36-year-old player from Hampshire, became England’s oldest debutant since John Childs in 1988.

Multan, a dusty and decaying city, boasted a cricket stadium that was least affected by rain among international venues. Despite being only four years old, the stadium was in excellent condition, featuring a surprisingly lush outfield that mitigated the impact of reverse swing, which England had anticipated to be more influential.

england tour pakistan 2005

The formidable pace attack of Hoggard, Harmison, and Flintoff continued their impressive form against Pakistan, building on their success against Australia. In what marked their 24th consecutive Test match together since March 2004, they combined brilliantly to dismiss Pakistan for 274 on a batting-friendly surface. Young opener Salman Butt showcased his resilience with a solid 74, but it was Udal who claimed his first Test wicket in an unconventional manner. A thick edge flew through Trescothick’s hands at slip, struck his forehead, and was alertly caught by the diving Jones. With the last nine wickets falling for 113 runs, there was no doubt that England exuded the confidence that comes from defeating the world champions.

England’s batting performance, much like their warm-up matches, displayed fragility. While Bell fought hard for his 71, there was a concerning lack of determination elsewhere, with several batsmen struggling to read Danish Kaneria’s googly.

Trescothick remained impervious to the challenges. Although he survived a close lbw appeal from Kaneria when on 48, he provided just one chance on 181 when he swept the ball to square leg. In his 305-ball innings, he struck 20 boundaries and lofted Kaneria for two sixes over long-off. His dismissal came just after lunch on the third day, nicking Shabbir Ahmed to leave England at 388 for seven. They eventually obtained a lead of 144 runs. However, there was a sense that England could have amassed a larger total, considering they were 251 for two at the close of the second day. The pitch did not present any alarming challenges, and Pakistan’s lack of recent Test cricket was evident in their fielding errors and 22 no-balls.

In contrast, England’s cohesion and unity were on full display when they returned to the field, exhibiting discipline and positive body language even when they struggled to make breakthroughs. Pakistan relied on Butt and the composed Inzamam as they methodically attempted to bat England out of the game. Butt displayed astute shot selection, working the ball into gaps and minimizing risks against the persistent probing of Flintoff and Hoggard.

However, the situation took a dramatic turn with the arrival of the second new ball. Inzamam fell in front of his wicket to Hoggard, who generated conventional swing and found the perfect line. Panic set in among the home team as Flintoff quickly added two more wickets. Flintoff was entrusted with the new ball ahead of Harmison, who was slightly less consistent in his bowling but eventually contributed with the final two dismissals. Pietersen, after his previous six missed chances against Australia, finally secured his first Test catch—a lob to square leg. Although Udal performed admirably, there was minimal assistance from the pitch for the finger-spinners, and he and Giles ended the match with one wicket each.

Despite being in a promising position at 64 for one while chasing a target of 198 on a favorable pitch, England failed to successfully complete the run chase, which they should have accomplished. The downfall began with the loss of three wickets in just eight balls, starting with Bell, who was one of the batsmen attempting to attack Kaneria’s leg-spin aggressively. The team relied on their power-hitters to deliver significant innings, but Flintoff’s aggressive swipe resulted in a catch at deep midwicket, while Pietersen, chasing a wide delivery, was caught behind. Jones provided a glimmer of hope for England as he guided them to within 32 runs of victory, but he was eventually dismissed, bowled off the bat and pad by the improved Shoaib Akhtar. The match concluded just ten balls later.

Pakistan’s only setback was the umpires reporting the bowling actions of Shabbir and off-spinner Shoaib Malik. As for England, they were reminded of the unforgiving nature of Test cricket, where one poor hour can overshadow four days of hard work.

Man of the Match: Salman Butt.

Rana Naved-ul-Hasa celebrates Andrew Strauss's wicket

England fall short again

England's troubled tour of Pakistan went from bad to worse today when they lost the fourth one-day international at Rawalpindi by 13 runs, and with it the series. Set a highly gettable 211 to set up the decider here on Wednesday, England crumbled to 114 for 8 and, seemingly, the point of no return. Gutsy batting from the tail gave the scoreline a sheen of respectability, but on a tour of feeble displays from the top and middle order, this might well have been the most lily-livered of the lot.

How quickly these games can go wrong. At the halfway stage of the game England looked well-placed to make it 2-2. Inspired by the new-ball accuracy of Andrew Flintoff and the supersub James Anderson, they had dismissed Pakistan for 210, which was about 50 below par on another decent batting pitch. The momentum was theirs.

But Matt Prior chased a wide one from Rana Naved in the fourth over of their reply to be caught behind for 6, and when Andrew Strauss was trapped plumb in front first ball for his second duck of the series, England were 13 for 2. From that moment on Pakistan played like a team who knew victory was there for the taking. England, on the other hand, batted as if they thought Christmas had come early: their generosity knew no bounds.

Vikram Solanki was bowled for 6 after his back-foot defensive shot against Shoaib Akhtar bounced back on to the stumps, and it was 70 for 4 when Marcus Trescothick tried to run Arshad Khan, the off-spinning supersub, down to third man and missed. Paul Collingwood slapped Mohammad Sami straight to cover, also for 6, and the game was all but over when Flintoff, England's last real hope, was pinned in front by Shahid Afridi for an innings of 40, including a pull for six off Naved.

Geraint Jones, to a weak slap to point, and Liam Plunkett, unluckily leg-before, followed in quick succession as England struggled against the spin of Khan and Afridi. At that point the scoreboard read 114 for 8 and a defeat every bit as embarrassing as the record loss on Thursday was on the cards.

But Ian Blackwell and Kabir Ali got stuck in to add 50 for the ninth wicket and encourage English optimists to believe in an unlikely win. That hope evaporated when Blackwell chanced a quick single to mid-on and was run out for 29 by a direct hit from the substitute fielder Mohammad Asif, although Blackwell did not help himself by failing to run in a straight line. It was the kind of elementary error which has cost England throughout this series.

Again, England fought back as Kabir and Anderson, the career rabbit, scampered a series of singles to reduce the equation to 14 off the last two overs. But from the first ball of the penultimate over, Anderson tried to run Shoaib Akhtar down to third man and was superbly held at a very wide slip by Younis Khan, who was captaining in the absence of the injured Inzamam-ul-Haq. A last-wicket stand of 33 had been in vain.

In the end, England lacked a batsman to do an Inzamam. For what felt like the umpteenth time on this tour, the Pakistan captain held his side together with an unbeaten 81 after an early collapse had threatened to derail them altogether. From 33 for no wicket, they lost Salman Butt to a run-out, following a smart piece of work from Solanki at extra-cover, before Younis Khan was bowled first ball by Flintoff off the inside edge, and Anderson flummoxed Kamran Akmal with a lovely slower delivery.

Kabir trapped Mohammad Yousuf leg-before to make it 58 for 4, but Inzamam carefully marshalled the fightback with the help of Shoaib Malik and Afridi. Rarely hurried and always in control, Inzamam judged the pace of the pitch superbly. Only an attack of cramp late on in his innings - plus the surrender of the Pakistan tail - cost him a century.

Pakistan's total of 210 did not look like it would be enough, but their bowlers have exuded confidence ever since they blew England away on the last afternoon of the first Test at Multan, and they came out firing once again here. They have now won both the Test series and the one-dayers at a canter, which makes this England's least successful tour since the visit to Australia three years ago. Christmas cannot come quickly enough.

No surprises in Nida Dar-led Pakistan side for white-ball tour of England

P akistan have selected a near-identical squad to the one playing the ongoing white-ball series against West Indies for the upcoming tour of England, with Nida Dar the captain of the side.

The only omissions are Bismah Maroof, who retired from the game last week after an international career that spanned 18 years, and Sidra Nawaz, who was part of the ODI squad but did not play a game.

The official squad announcement does not appear to distinguish between players selected for the T20I and ODI legs of the series against England, and it is understood that all 17 players have been chosen for both formats.

The tour comes following a disappointing home series against West Indies, in which Pakistan have run the visitors close on several occasions but are yet to get over the line. West Indies, spearheaded by the sensational all-round form of Hayley Matthews, won the ODI series 3-0, and have taken an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match T20I series in Karachi .

Pakistan will play three T20Is and as many ODIs against England in May, with the T20I games on May 11, 17 and 19. The ODIs follow on May 23, 26 and 29. They will also play a warm-up T20 on May 9 and a one-day game on May 21 against an ECB Development XI side.

The ODIs are part of the ICC Women's Championship 2022-25, with this being Pakistan's eighth and final series in the current cycle. Pakistan are currently fifth with 16 points on the ten-team table , with the top five qualifying for the 2025 ODI World Cup directly.

england tour pakistan 2005

KARACHI: The newly-appointed seven-member women’s national selection committee has named a 17-player Pakistan women’s squad for this month’s tour to England, the country’s cricket board said on Wednesday.

Nida Dar will continue to lead the side, which will feature in three Twenty20 Internationals from May 11-19 and three one-dayers from May 23-29 May.

The ODIs will be played as a part of the ICC Women’s Championship 2022-25 and this will be Pakistan’s eighth and final series in the current event cycle, with the team currently placed fifth in the rankings.

To ensure direct qualification to next year’s ICC Women’s World Cup, Pakistan would need to ensure they don’t drop further in the standings. They were subjected to a 3-0 series whitewash by West Indies at home recently.

The top five teams from this championship, along with hosts India, will directly qualify for the 50-over showpiece.

In addition to the six white-ball international matches, the tourists will also play two warm-up games (T20 and One-Day) against ECB Development XI on May 9 and 21.

For their first England tour since 2016, the national side will fly to the UK on Sunday.

Squad: Nida Dar (captain), Aliya Riaz, Ayesha Zafar, Diana Baig, Fatima Sana, Gull Feroza, Muneeba Ali (wicket-keeper), Najiha Alvi (wicket-keeper), Nashra Sundhu, Natalia Parvaiz, Rameen Shamim, Sadaf Shamas, Sadia Iqbal, Sidra Amin, Tuba Hassan, Umm-e-Hani, Waheeda Akhtar.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan recalled fast bowler Hasan Ali as backup for the injured Haris Rauf for Twenty20 series against Ireland and England as it searches for the right pace combination for next month’s T20 World Cup.

Selectors on Thursday said the 15-member World Cup squad will be announced after the first T20 against England on May 22. The International Cricket Council has set May 24 as the deadline for participating teams to finalize their squads.

Pakistan will play three T20s against Ireland at Dublin from May 10-14 before heading to England for four T20s from May 22-30. The World Cup in the United States and Caribbean starts June 1, and Pakistan’s opener is June 6.

Ali has taken 60 wickets in 50 T20s but hasn’t played in the format for Pakistan since the Asia Cup in September 2022. He has been playing for Warwickshire in the English County Championship Division One and came under consideration after taking 14 wickets in the Pakistan Super League while representing Karachi Kings.

Fast bowler Haris Rauf, wicketkeeper-batters Mohammad Rizwan and Azam Khan and middle-order batter Irfan Khan all are recovering from injuries and were included in the 18-member squad.

Rauf has been out of competitive cricket since dislocating his shoulder in February during the PSL but has been bowling at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore, where he’s going under rehabilitation.

Azam missed out on the drawn series against New Zealand because of a calf muscle injury he sustained on the eve of the first T20 at Rawalpindi. Rizwan and Irfan both were ruled out of the last two T20s against the Black Caps because of hamstring injuries they sustained during the third game.

“We still have time to finalize our World Cup squad and we want to look at fitness of a few players,” said Wahab Riaz, one of seven members on the selection committee.

“Hasan was under consideration and we have given him clarity that he is the backup for Haris Rauf in case he (Rauf) doesn’t fully recover.”

Leg-spinner Usama Mir and fast bowler Zaman Khan, who both featured in the series against the Black Caps, were cut. All-rounder Salman Ali Agha was recalled as an option in a spin department that also features Shadab Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Imad Wasim and Iftikhar Ahmed.

“We understand Usama and Zaman will be disappointed,” Riaz said. “They are quality cricketers and have long careers ahead of them. They need to continue to focus on their cricket so that they are available, if required.”

The selectors have given another chance to top-order batter Usman Khan, who shifted his allegiance to Pakistan, his country of birth, resulting in a five-year ban from representing the Emirates Cricket Board. Usman scored only 59 runs in four matches against New Zealand with the top score of 31, and struggled to make an impact in the drawn series.

Squad: Babar Azam (captain), Abrar Ahmed, Azam Khan, Fakhar Zaman, Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Abbas Afridi, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Rizwan, Irfan Khan, Naseem Shah, Saim Ayub, Salman Ali Agha, Shadab Khan, Shaheen Shah Afridi and Usman Khan.
