Long-running Arizona punks Authority Zero have revealed their touring plans for the remainder of 2022. Things kick off with the band's long-delayed return to Europe and the UK, with dates kicking off July 14th in Hamburg, Germany.

Of the upcoming European tour, frontman Jason Devore says, “After a two plus year painstaking break, we are overwhelmingly ecstatic to get back across the pond to bring our latest record and show to the European fans and music lovers. We’ve been caged up a bit too long so we plan to play each show as if our first and last.”

The AZ crew will then return to the states to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album, 2002's 'A Passage In Time," with a hometown show at Mesa, AZ's The Nile Theatre on September 9th.

Devore says of the anniversary show, “This has unequivocally been the journey of a lifetime. Our album “Passage” turning 20 years of age is something of a time capsule. Ingrained within are so many moments and memories not only in our lives as the songwriters and performers, but in the lives of our fans. All those who have been there every step of the way, or even in and out along the way, to commemorate and celebrate the music and moments from then to present. We wanted to bring the music and the show back home to one of our original stomping grounds in the heart of Mesa Town where it all began. That place being The Nile Theatre where the band was essentially born and raised.”

In September, the band kicks off the Northeast leg of its 'Good Company Tour', which runs from September 15 to October 1st, and includes stops in Canada.

“When you get the opportunity to tour the East Coast, make a few stops back up into Canada for a couple of rad Festivals with some good friends, and make some noise after far too long, well it just doesn’t get any better than that," says Devore. "We’re so stoked to bring the “Good Company Tour” back East and looking VERY forward to tearing it down with the East Coast Zero Crew!”

Authority Zero's 'Ollie Ollie Free' Japan Tour follows from November 11- November 19, which features support from many of the band's friends.

Devore says, “Nihon! We’re coming for you! Japan is and always has been one of our all-time favorite countries to tour. With our Japanese family Caffeine Bomb, Hey-Smith, Dizzy Sunfist and the Japanese fans in tow every step of the way, it will undeniably be a tour to remember. Not only will we be supporting our latest record “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free”, but we will also be celebrating our 2002 record “A Passage In Time”’s 20th anniversary at one of our final shows playing it front to back. Bring the noise Japan and let’s get Psycho! Psycho!”

Long-Running Punk Band To Celebrate 20 Year Anniversary of Debut LP ‚A Passage In Time‘ With Hometown Show at Mesa, AZ’s Nile Theatre on September 9

New video „fire off another“ pays homage to ‚fight club‘.

Long-running Arizona punks  Authority Zero  have revealed their touring plans for the remainder of 2022. Things kick off with the band’s long-delayed return to Europe and the UK, with dates kicking off July 14th in Hamburg, Germany.

The band’s 8th studio LP ‚Ollie Ollie Oxen Free‘ was recorded by  Cameron Webb  (Sum 41, Pennywise, A Day to Remember, Motörhead, Megadeth) and features guest appearances by  Jim Lindberg (Pennywise)  and  Iagri Shuhei   (HEY-SMITH) .

A music video for the fan-favorite track „Fire Off Another“ is now streaming at:   https://youtu.be/JM___kLjf48 .

Devore explains,  “Directed by Bryan Heiden, „Fire Off Another“ was released on the one year anniversary of our latest record “Ollie Ollie Oxen Free” and is a cinematic creation mirroring the storyline and imagery of the classic 1999 David Fincher film “Fight Club.” It reflects the highs and lows of our innermost fears and demons that hold us back while at the same time try setting us free. That inner turmoil or voice inside us all of right and wrong within and having the courage to know the difference and take a stand when it matters most.”

Hailing from Mesa, Arizona, US, Authority Zero fuse the classic skate-punk of Bad Religion and Pennywise with Sublime's reggae tinged sound to create their uniquely exotic take on punk.

Formed whilst attending high school, Authority Zero came together in 1994, featuring Bill Marcks (guitars), Jerry Douglas (vocals, guitar) and Jason DeVore (vocals). They soon enlisted Jeremy Wood for bass duties, who had also taught Marcks and Douglas how to play guitar. As a talented bassist, his skills helped Authority Zero stand out from other punk acts, adding a sense of fluidity to the rhythm section. Jim Wilcox (drums) joined soon after, with the band beginning to play locally regularly.

Well-received early EPs and demos led the band to gain a contract with Lava Records, with whom they released their debut album, "A Passage In Time," in 2002. FInding hits with the singles "One More Minute" and "Over Seasons," the band established their presence on the punk rock scene, gaining high profile support slots with the likes of Sum 41, Everclear, Guttermouth and H2O.

In a short space of time, Authority Zero already had material for their second effort, releasing the distinctly latin-flavored "Andiamo" in 2004. Extensive touring followed before Authority Zero recorded an all-acoustic live album, "Rhythm and Booze," which appeared in 2006 on the Suburban Noize label. A support slot with Zebrahead helped gain new fans on tour, before returning with the more energetic "12:34," laying down some fast-paced punk.

In 2010, their fourth record found the band reaching the number five spot on the Billboard US Heatseekers chart, their highest position yet. Bassist Jeremy Wood unfortunately left the band in 2013, citing musical differences, shortly before Authority Zero unleashed their fifth outing, "The Tipping Point," again charting well.

Live reviews

The punk rock band called Authority Zero, was formed back in 1994. The group has 2 guitarists and a drummer who all went to school together, where they began making songs as a bit of a hobby, they later recruited another member who joined as a bit of a joke they claimed, after a while of playing together though they decided to stop joking around and actually give it a shot. It was unexpected when I found myself actually enjoying their music because it's not really the typical genre I tend to listen to. This group however combines a bit of skate punk and reggae style with a bit of Spanish influence, which is pretty interesting to see. They released their debut album in 2002 through Lava Records, called 'A Passage In Time', which did pretty well for their first released album. The band are crazy at a live gig, everything I'd want from a punk rock band including crowd surfing, mosh pits, topless drumming and insane guitar riffs. You wouldn't forget being a part of that audience quickly if you saw them live, they are currently touring the US but if they came to the UK I'd definitely go and get a bit crazy at one of their gigs!

The genre of skate-punk is a subculture in itself so therefore any musician attempting to soundtrack this movement is likely to have a readymade fanbase from the offset. This premis is very true of Arizona band Authority Zero who have been playing together since the mid-90s.

Only lead vocalist Jason DeVore remains as a founding member yet there is clear rapport with the new lineup and they do well to translate the good vibes to the crowds present tonight. 'The Tipping Point' is the latest release and this album has seen contribution from every member tonight so therefore seems to be the most consistent performances. There is still leanings towards the band's past as they are unable to deny the popularity of albums such as 'A Passage in Time' and 'Andiamo'. It is great to see the whole crowd singing along to the choruses of 'Lift One Up' and 'Big Bad World'. They return for an encore as they tease the crowd first of all with a large instrumental section before leading into the intro of 'Get It Right' to mammoth cheers.

I thing they tried to do their best and for that I respect them. The place was small but enough for the 40 people that they were inside which they were seating also few of them. They have change a lot of group members and maybe that hat affect them.

I saw them a few years ago in Athens and there was a much better show and the people also more enthusiastic.

Unfortunately I cannot compare it with that Concert because of the people and the place.Maybe their are losing their touch or I don't know how to explain it.

I wasn't expecting only 40 people at Authority Zero Concert and the Half of them seating..

This band is legendary. This was my first time seeing them live, ever, since I began listening to them in middle school (circa 2005 and last nifht was Dec. 7th, 2019). An absolutely amazing show they put on; I still tell people they are one of the most talented, well-put-together bands to have ever existed. When you combine that with their positive themes and energy, you have yourself one hell of a good time. There is no score enough high I would give them, so I'll say 11/10. ZEROS

Authority zero announces 20th anniversary tour dates.

Music News | Jul 9th, 2022

Authority Zero have announced a bunch of tour dates for the remainder of 2022. Things kick off with the band’s long-delayed return to Europe and the UK, with dates kicking off July 14th in Hamburg, Germany. They will be playing in the US, don’t worry. They will celebrate their 20th anniversary with a hometown show on September 9th Mesa AZ. Plus, they will be playing Brooklyn on September 21st and in Philly the next night. There’s a lot more happening so read below.

Of the upcoming European tour, frontman Jason Devore says:

“After a two plus year painstaking break, we are overwhelmingly ecstatic to get back across the pond to bring our latest record and show to the European fans and music lovers. We’ve been caged up a bit too long so we plan to play each show as if our first and last.”

The AZ crew will then return to the states to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album, 2002’s ‘A Passage In Time,” with a hometown show at Mesa, AZ’s The Nile Theatre on September 9th.

Devore says of the anniversary show:

“This has unequivocally been the journey of a lifetime.

In September, the band kicks off the Northeast leg of its ‘Good Company Tour’, which runs from September 15 to October 1st, and includes stops in Canada.

“When you get the opportunity to tour the East Coast, make a few stops back up into Canada for a couple of rad Festivals with some good friends, and make some noise after far too long, well it just doesn’t get any better than that,” says Devore. “We’re so stoked to bring the “Good Company Tour” back East and looking VERY forward to tearing it down with the East Coast Zero Crew!”

Authority Zero’s ‘Ollie Ollie Free’ Japan Tour follows from November 11- November 19, which features support from many of the band’s friends.

Devore says:

“Nihon! Psycho!”

UTA reaching out to immigrant newcomers in bid to counter bus driver shortage

By tim vandenack, ksl.com | posted - may 17, 2024 at 8:03 a.m., the most recent class of graduates and their instructors from the english-language portion of the utah transit authority driver recruitment program geared to immigrants. they were recognized wednesday. (utah transit authority).

Estimated read time: 3-4 minutes

SALT LAKE CITY — Since coming to the United States from Venezuela nearly five years ago, Wilmer Amaya Fernández's limited English has been a roadblock to success.

After completing an English-language program offered by the Utah Transit Authority, though, he feels he's taken a big step forward. UTA, for its part, is getting a potential recruit to help it in its efforts to diversify its crew of bus operators.

"It's amazing ... it's a blessing," Amaya said in a statement. "UTA has given me an opportunity to improve my English and get a job."

UTA launched what it calls its Bilingual Bridges program in 2023, paying participants like Amaya, who are nonnative English speakers, to learn the language and take training to become bus drivers. Amaya, one of 10 recent graduates from the English-language instruction portion of the program, is part of the second cohort to take part in the initiative. UTA officials, though planning for a third installation of the program, are in the process of evaluating the longer-term future of the pilot program.

The program aims to broaden the pool of recruits for bus driving posts with a focus on drumming up interest among immigrant newcomers, English-language learners and those who reflect Utah's changing racial and ethnic demographics. Amaya's next steps following a ceremony Wednesday to honor him and his nine fellow program participants are completing training in driving a bus and getting a commercial driver's license.

"Our bus operators are the face of UTA and it is important those faces reflect the community we serve," said UTA spokesman Carl Arky. "Through this program, we are able to recruit to a wider audience. Many of our participants had never thought of UTA as a career option before this program."

Fifteen people took part in the first cohort in the program, with graduates moving on to a mix of bus driving and maintenance positions. Program participants — who have come from all over the world, with a preponderance from Spanish-speaking countries — must have a Utah driver's license and be lawfully present in the United States.

The UTA initiative has its roots in the COVID-19 pandemic, when a series of retirements and a tight labor market combined to create a severe driver shortage, which lingered even after the pandemic eased. Partner organizations include the Utah State Board of Education and Granite School District. "The agency realized it could access an untapped pool of talent by offering recruits the chance to learn English, build a new career and earn a living with benefits," UTA said in a press release.

Amaya, for his part, is grateful. He had been a Lyft and Uber driver and learned of the UTA program from a UTA employee who he was driving. "This is a great opportunity. It is a blessing for people who are not native and cannot yet speak fluent English," he said.

Ana Maria Carvajal Mast, classmates with Amaya, sounded a similar message. "I was waiting for an opportunity like this — for my family, for me," she said.

Alex Smith, an English teacher in the program, stressed what he sees as the role of initiatives like the UTA program in helping immigrant newcomers adjust to life in the United States. "I am supremely confident that they will repay the investment UTA is making in them many times over in their service to the community," he said.

Angelica Suaste, who helps with the training, said the initiative hits close to home for her. The would-be bus operators will also learn how to contend with the varied scenarios they may face on the many segments of the UTA system along the Wasatch Front and beyond.

"I come from an immigrant family, and I remember how much my family struggled due to the language barrier. If I can help these people learn English, I can help them have the same opportunity as everyone else and build a better life for themselves," she said.

Can You Bring Umbrellas On Planes: Answers For The Rainy Days

If you have ever travelled to South East Asia or any tropical area, chances are you’ve been caught in a sudden rain or downpour or two. It’s not a fun experience, isn’t it?

On the other hands, it’s uncomfortable wearing a raincoat to explore the travel destinations that are worth visiting in the rain when it’s hot and humid. An umbrella is the best solution, but can you bring umbrellas on planes?

Let us guide you to the clouds blanketing the TSA and CAA guidelines. So that next time your trusted umbrellas won’t be left behind.

1. Can You Bring Umbrellas On Planes

authority zero uk tour

Here is the good news.

Umbrellas are permitted in carry-on bags and checked bags , according to TSA regulations . The GOV.UK site also confirms that they are acceptable in both hand and checked luggage. The CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) also has no restrictions on umbrellas (unless they are large “golf” type, we’ll take more about this later).

Whenever you board a plane, you are allowed to bring hand luggage (such as a trolley suitcase or backpack), hold baggage, and a personal item . Umbrellas are normally not counted toward the carry-on baggage allowance, or even as a personal item. So you can bring them alongside your luggage.

Size restrictions

As mentioned, in case your umbrella is too large, you may have to check them in. The item’s size restrictions in carry-on baggage are typically dependent on its length or diameter when fully extended. A common rule of thumb is that umbrellas should not be longer than 22-24 inches (55-60 cm) .

This length limit may vary between airlines and security checkpoints. So it is best to check your airline's current rules and policies before your travel.

Some airlines let you carry your brolly in hands, while others require you to put it in your carry-on bag. Hence, if they are sticking out or unable to fit, you may have to leave your umbrellas behind.

That’s why we recommend carrying mini-sized or collapsible umbrellas. They are easier to fit within the dimensions of your carry-on bag. And don’t forget to bring a quality bag for your carry on or personal item .

Mind the tip

authority zero uk tour

If possible, avoid umbrellas with point tips like this. Photo by Abhishek Yadav on Unsplash

The TSA agents may seize umbrellas with sharp and pointy tips . The reasoning is that they could potentially poke/hurt others.

Before carrying the umbrella in your carry-on suitcase, make sure that the sharp tips are properly covered (in bubble cushion, tape, socks, or wraps of any kind) or retracted to avoid any potential accidents or injuries. This not only keeps other goods in your backpack safe, but it also keeps security employees safe during the screening procedure.

Furthermore, it is critical to be aware of any unusual features that could potentially result in an umbrella being confiscated.

Certain airports or airlines may have strict rules for odd-looking or pointed handles . It is critical to become acquainted with these restrictions to prevent problems at the security checkpoint.

We recommend you check the TSA's website or contact the proper authorities to have updated information.

On checked luggage

Pointed ends or sharp metals are among the most common reasons why an umbrella is confiscated. However, most of the time, you’d be asked to check them in if your umbrella has unusual features or longer than 22-24 inches (55-60 cm).

The exception is when your umbrella is too long. But the length of the umbrella does not cause the deny itself, it is the length of the checked luggage.

Checked luggage that is longer than 32 inches is not permitted on some airlines. So, if your umbrella is too long that it required longer checked baggage, you might have to put both behind.

Security screening

authority zero uk tour

What kind of brolly can you bring with you on your air travel? Photo by Jeremy Bishop on Unsplash

Like other goods in your carry-on luggage, umbrellas are usually subject to X-ray screening or physical inspection. To provide a clear view during the screening process, security personnel may suggest that you place your umbrella (lying flat) in a separate bin .

There is also the potential that security staff would manually inspect the umbrella to ensure its safety. This may include visually inspecting the umbrella, extending or compressing it, or looking for hidden compartments or forbidden goods. Don’t worry too much. It is just a normal screening procedure; your item is still in a safe situation.

In addition, avoid opening or using the umbrellas at the airport. Superstition asides, they could potentially hurts others even if you don’t mean it.

2. Let’s Look At Some Specific Airlines

Since the regulations and policies vary among airlines, let’s take a deeper look into some specific airlines:

Alaska Airlines

  • Not counting toward the carry-on limit
  • Small enough to fit in an overhead bin, under a seat, or in a luggage

British Airways

  • Small foldable umbrellas are accepted
  • No charge for bringing an umbrella in addition to carry-on items
  • There is no information on their official website. According to our findings, an umbrella can be counted as a personal item. It should not exceed   18” in width x 14” in length x 8” in height (45 x 35 x 20 cm).
  • Counted as a special item and are not added to the carry-on limit
  • Can be carried in addition to carry-on and personal item
  • Not counted against the TSA limit
  • Southwest requires sharp objects to be appropriately covered and secured. Even though the regulations don’t refer to umbrellas, but to needles, syringes, etc. we still recommend you cover the end tip of your umbrella.

United Airlines

  • Free, in addition to your carry-on and personal items

3. Tips For Travelling With Umbrellas

Packing strategy

What we found a lot of people miss is the impact of the umbrella on your luggage. If you don’t store it carefully, your luggage's overall balance and structure might be impaired.

Generally, we recommend packing them in your carry-on as they would take up space in your checked luggage.

Another thing you need to mind is accessibility. With the right packing solutions , you can carry and retrieve your umbrella more easily on your journey.

To begin, if you intend to bring your umbrella in your carry-on bag , make sure it is in an easily accessible pocket or compartment.

This allows you to readily get it without having to sift through your items or damage the organisation of your bag. Consider using an umbrella sleeve or a side pocket specifically designed to handle umbrellas. This allows you to rapidly access your umbrella if rain showers surprise you while travelling.

On the other hand, many travel bags or backpacks have extra pockets or hooks specifically designed for umbrellas. Use these designated areas to keep your umbrella easily accessible.

For example, look for a backpack with front molle webbing like CabinZero Military . Alternatively,  a pack with a water bottle pocklet like the CabinZero Classic Plus is ideal to store foldable umbrellas.

Regardless of where you store your umbrellas, remember to position your umbrella so that it does not affect other passengers.

Choose the right umbrellas

authority zero uk tour

Not all umbrellas are created equal, some are easier to carry-on than others. Photo by Drobot Dean - stock.adobe.com

To do so, consider two criteria. To begin, choose a  compact and lightweight umbrella . Look for versions that can be folded down to a tiny size and easily fit into your luggage or backpack.

Compact umbrellas take up relatively little space, giving you more room for other travel necessities. Furthermore, their lightweight form makes transporting them throughout your vacation simple and comfortable.

Second, put  durability and windproof  properties first. Travel umbrellas should be made of robust materials that can survive the rigours of travel.

To ensure endurance and robustness, look for umbrellas constructed of strong fabrics and reinforced frames. Consider umbrellas that are specifically built to be windproof.

Some types of umbrellas that are convenient to carry around are:

  • Compact umbrellas
  • Foldable umbrellas
  • Automatic Open/Close Umbrellas.

These umbrellas have characteristics like flexible frames and ventilated canopies to assist them resist heavy winds. This prevents them from turning inside out or becoming destroyed during inclement weather.

Notes : There are some special cases that you need to be aware of:

  • Beach umbrella : If you plan on carrying one of these, you actually can. However, it needs to be separated into 2 parts. The fabric part can be stored in your carry-on luggage, but the poles and stakes are only permitted in checked luggage.
  • Umbrellas appear as replica weapons : As cool as they might be, you can not carry them inside planes’ cabins. Since it might cause discomfort for other passengers to look at, umbrellas like these have to be put in checked luggage.

Alternatives for umbrellas

authority zero uk tour

Packing a raincoat would be much easier. Photo by supamotion - stock.adobe.com

If you don’t like what we have just suggested about choosing umbrellas, here are some other options:

Packing a raincoat or poncho is one option. When it starts to rain, these small and lightweight clothing may be simply stored in your backpack and worn.

They provide effective moisture protection without the need to carry and handle an umbrella. Raincoats or ponchos are especially beneficial when you need both hands free or when navigating crowded areas where umbrellas may be inconvenient.

Investing in waterproof coats or clothing layers is another option to consider. These items are made of waterproof materials that repel rain and keep you dry.

Waterproof jackets are useful because they can be worn as outer layers or layered over other garments. They have the advantage of allowing you to walk around freely without having to carry an umbrella.

Additionally, using waterproof pants or skirts with your clothing can improve your rain protection, ensuring you stay dry from head to toe. If your bags are not made of waterproof materials, purchase rain cover for them.

4. Key Takeaways

  • You can pack your luggage in a carry-on or checked bag
  • Most of the time, you can bring them for free in addition to your hand luggage and personal items
  • Make sure they are neither too long nor too big (22-24 inches/55-60 cm is the magic number)
  • Avoid bringing those with sharp tips for safety reasons (otherwise, cover the tips with wraps)
  • Opt for mini or foldable ones to fit in your bags easier.

5. April Showers Bring May Flowers

To conclude, can you bring umbrellas on planes? Yes! However, it does not mean you can bring any type in any way you want, there are still some restrictions. If you just pay a little attention to that, we believe your next flight will not have any problem at all.

If you are unlucky and your umbrella is confiscated or denied, don’t be stressed. Almost in every airport, there will be some shops selling umbrellas, even ones from airlines.

That is why if you are not sure whether your umbrella is qualified, consider buying a new one at your destination airport. So, that would be everything about the topic of umbrellas. Fly safe and have fun on your next adventure!

First Bus North & West Yorkshire

First Bus and Combined Authority announce further £11.2m for Bramley bus depot

  • Investment and co-funding from Department for Transport Zebra scheme
  • Extra 22 electric buses brings zero emission fleet to 79 – half Bramley total
  • Delivery of more buses expected in July 2024

First Bus and West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) have announced a further £11.2m investment in the operator’s Bramley depot which will make half the fleet zero emission before the end of 2024.

WYCA with support from First Bus have been successful in securing £3.4m in a ‘variation request’ from the Department for Transport (DfT) Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) project.

First Bus is investing £7.8m which will introduce an additional 22 double-decker electric buses (EV), increasing the total at the depot to 79.

The announcement came as councillors for the Bramley and Stanningley Ward, Tom Hinchcliffe and Kevin Ritchie visited the depot, now home to the largest fleet of zero emission buses in West Yorkshire, which launched in March.

The additional funding boost comes only two months after the depot, which has been transformed with the capacity to operate a fully electric fleet from earlier ZEBRA funding and investment totalling £29m, was celebrated by First Bus and senior members from WYCA.

Commenting on this latest funding success, Deputy Chair of the West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee, Cllr Peter Carlill said: “These state-of-the-art electric buses will help West Yorkshire towards its goal of becoming a net zero economy by 2038, as well as encouraging more people to use public transport.

“We are constantly working to introduce more zero-emission buses to the region’s fleet – boosting air quality, improving public transport and helping tackle the climate emergency.

“This investment will help us build a greener and better-connected West Yorkshire.”

Green skills and support for community

Megan Hope, Operations Director of First Bus in North & West Yorkshire, hosted the councillors on the tour. She said: “It was a pleasure to show councillors what our team together with suppliers has achieved with the depot transformation and the introduction of our EV fleet. This will play an important part in skilled green jobs for the future and supporting the wider community.

“It is yet more evidence of our continuing successful partnership with West Yorkshire Combined Authority in bringing major improvements to bus services, supporting a shared ambition for a net-zero transport system and reducing carbon emissions in the city.”

Speaking jointly, Cllrs Tom Hinchcliffe and Kevin Ritchie added: “We welcome this investment in the Bramley depot and are really pleased to see more electric buses on our streets.

“Buses remain the most used form of public transport and so any change to make them more environmentally friendly has a significant impact on reaching our city’s climate targets and providing the public transport network our residents deserve.

“From a local point of view, more electric buses means better air quality for the people in the area surrounding the depot, as well as the people on the routes these buses serve. We all know clean air has a huge positive impact on people’s health and wellbeing so to see this change is great news.”

“We welcome the support that the WYCA mayor has done in helping to secure this funding and making positive change for our local area.”

Existing EV fleet saving over 4,000 tonnes of CO2e a year

The current fleet of 57 electric buses - 32 single-decker GB Kite Electroliners 25 StreetDeck Electroliner double-deckers - entered service in March. The buses are manufactured by Wrightbus in Northern Ireland with features including audio visual next stop technology and USB charging points.

Each bus saves around 75 tonnes of CO2e a year, making a total of 4,275 equivalent tonnes of carbon annually.

“We’re seeing a positive reaction from customers to the electric buses and believe they will attract more people to consider bus travel by realising the real impact this has in reducing congestion and creating cleaner air and quieter streets,” added Megan Hope

The EU and the UK: Are they miles apart from moving towards zero-emission commercial vehicles?

Call 0345 872 6666

authority zero uk tour

On Monday 13 May 2024, the EU Parliament adopted a significant regulation, targeting stricter CO2 emission standards for trucks and urban buses and expanding the scope of emission reduction targets to include almost all new heavy-duty vehicles including trucks, smaller trucks, urban buses, coaches and trailers. The regulation will now be signed and published in the Official Journal of the EU and the standards set out in the regulation will come into force 20 days after its publication.

What are the standards?

The standards stipulate that all new urban buses must be emission free from 2035 and almost all lorries from 2040. Specifically, it has now been decided that manufacturers must reduce average emissions of trucks weighing 7.5 tonnes or more and coaches by 45% from 2030, 65% from 2035 and 90% from 2040.

The new regulations focus more on the period from 2030. The existing target for 2025, according to which emissions from heavy goods vehicles weighing 16 tonnes or more must be reduced by 15%, remains unchanged. However, the target for 2030, which was previously 30% under the old regulation has now been raised to 45% and so the rules have been tightened, providing far more ambitious emissions reduction targets. The effectiveness and impact of the amended regulation will be reviewed by the Commission in 2027.

More robust standards for CO2 emissions will help increase the share of zero-emission vehicles in the heavy-duty vehicle fleet across the EU, while ensuring that innovation in and the competitiveness of the sector are preserved and enhanced.

What is going on in the United Kingdom?

With detailed clarity from Europe regarding their CO2 reduction targets for the commercial vehicle sector, it does beg the question “what is going on in the United Kingdom?”. As we have now left the EU, these regulations will obviously not apply in the United Kingdom so it will be for the UK to set its own agenda through domestic legislation. There have been lots of discussions regarding a zero-emission mandate, similar to that already in place for cars and vans, but the information flow has been extremely slow.

There are talks of the Department for Transport preparing for the drafting of a zero-emission mandate for heavy duty vehicles, but we have not seen anything yet. The industry will need a consultation paper soon, though, if it is going to get the required preparation in place for the fleet buying cycles kicking off in the next couple of years.

Operators need to prepare for when a zero-emission mandate does come to fruition in the UK and should start acting now to pro-actively manage the transition toward zero-emission new heavy duty vehicles and avoid the hefty costs of complying – perhaps at short notice - in the future.

If you require any advice in relation to how your business can take steps to reduce its carbon emissions, please contact our Commercial Road Transport team. You can contact the team by calling 0345 872 6666 or by completing our online enquiry form.
