Review: topcad 105mm aluminum piggyback shocks for axial wraith.

Bayers July 26, 2015 Reviews 704 Views

The first episode of my Axial Wraith project had me installing some aluminum goodies to help boost both the look and durability of the crawler. These parts worked great to reduce some of the flex, allowing the Wraith to have a more positive feel out on the rocks.

The next area I decided to work on is the suspension; more specifically, the shocks. For this, I chose the TopCad 105mm Aluminum Piggyback Shocks mainly for the great looks, durable construction and piggyback reservoirs.

Specifics Product: Aluminum Piggyback Shocks, 105mm Manufacturer: TopCad, distributed by AsiaTees Product #: 23002gu (available in other colors as well) Average Cost: $22.00 Installation Time: About 25 minutes

What’s In The Box TopCad includes 2 fully built, aluminum threaded dampers complete with installed springs and functional reservoirs. The upper cap, lower cap and reservoir cap all come attached with a rubber o-ring installed to help prevent leakage. There is even a bleeder screw in the cap should you build the shocks with too much pack. A separate bag includes foam oil compensators, aluminum compensators, a couple of washers, spare screws and retaining nuts.

Since the shock kit doesn’t come with instructions, I took this time to research reservoirs to see how they work and hopefully give me a better idea on how to build them. Basically, when the suspension system moves up and down, it causes a state known as kinetic energy. Shock absorbers are designed to dampen this and turns that energy into heat energy, using the aluminum shock body to dissipate the heat. Over rough terrain, this sustained movement can overload a standard, mono-tube shock and cause it to overheat, making the shock oil foam and lose its damping effect. Now you’re relying on only the spring which can cause a bouncy ride and very erratic handling. Reservoirs can help solve this problem by increasing fluid capacity, helping to lower fluid temperatures and reducing shock fade.

Before building, however, I knew from experience that the foam compensators needed to be ‘pre-soaked’ with fluid; they are, after all, foam parts that trap air inside – and shocks hate air! I squeezed a puddle of shock fluid into a plastic container, dropped the 4 compensators in and mushed them around until they were nice and soaked. After a pretty extensive benchtop compression test (like, oh, 2-3 minutes tops), I decided to go with the 1 foam/1 aluminum compensator simply because it felt the best.

Once all 4 shocks were built, final installation was a snap. Simply remove the old shocks and install the new ones using the same hardware and same mounting location. Just make sure there is no interference with the reservoirs and any chassis tubing.

One of the first things I noticed was how sure-footed the truck seemed; the cushy shocks were doing a great job of keeping all 4 tires planted while still allowing maximum articulation in even the worst situations. After completing the downhill run without any issues, I took a short break under a shady tree and gave the truck a close look – especially around the shocks. Everything looked great – no leaks or lost spring perches. It was now time for the hard part – the uphill grind!

I started my trek up the steep hill, a much harder task than before since I had to fight gravity going up! Picking the right line was much more crucial and the tires had to do a LOT more clawing, but the Wraith was awesome. I was feeling a little more comfortable during the climb so I started aiming for more difficult sections to really test the setup, but unfortunately this fuzzy feeling bit me in the ass.

I got stuck in a tall crevice near the top of the climb; the front tires were up and over the rocks but the rears were having a tough time. I stabbed the throttle to try and ‘hop’ it up and over but instead flung the front end backwards! Down the hill the Wraith went, the whole time making those dreaded sounds you hear when plastic meets solid rock. Thankfully I was able to gain control about half-way down, but by this time it had hit quite a few times. I cautiously continued the climb, making it to the top without any further issues. I gave the Wraith a once over, checking the shocks for leaking, bent shafts or dislodged springs or cups. The piggybacks were in excellent condition!

Conclusion If you’re looking for a new set of 105mm shocks for you Axial Wraith, The TopCad Aluminum Piggyback Shocks are an excellent choice! They are still super smooth after a few runs on the rocks and trails with no signs of leakage. I wouldn’t say the reservoirs are needed if you’re only out for a slow crawl, but for a vehicle like the Wraith where any terrain at any speed is plausible, having these will definitely help keep all 4 tires stuck to the ground.

Review – Axial Wraith Spawn RTR Rock Racer

When the original Wraith was released a few years ago there was nothing else like it on the market. It combined size, speed and scale appeal into a package that instantly made it a hit. Fast forward to late 2014 and the platform has been updated with the release of the Axial Wraith Spawn . The scale 4×4 genre is now ultra competitive with many quality kits vying for your dollar. Is the Wraith Spawn worth your cash?

RTR or Kit: RTR Age: 14+ 2wd or 4wd: 4wd Electric or Gas: Electric Waterproof: Yes Scale: 1/10th Length: 19.25″ (490mm) Width: 11.2″ (285mm) Wheelbase: 14″ (355mm) Motor: 20 turn brushed Speed Controller: AE-5 ESC w/ drag brake Low Voltage Cut-off: Yes Radio: Axial AX-3 2.4 GHz Differentials: Locked Slipper Clutch: Yes Driveshafts: WB8 HD splined Shocks: Plastic oil filled Servo Saver: None Screws: Hex Spur/Pinion Pitch: 32 pitch Bearings: Yes Tires: 2.2 size Axial Ripsaws Battery: Not included Part Number: AX90045 Top Speed (measured by BSRC w/ 2S Lipo) : 15 mph Warranty: The manual states “…to be free of defects in materials and workmanship when new in the factory sealed box.”. It also states “…a 10-day warranty from the date of purchase on electronics..” Street Price: $369

What’s Needed To Complete: A battery, charger, and 4 AA’s for the transmitter.

Build Quality: Everything was cinched down nicely from the factory. Gear mesh was spot on. No hardware was stripped.

Test Drivers: Steady Teddy, Show-Me Dan, Lily the Explorer, Mr. Steve, Rachel Rachel and yours truly (Doug).

Test Venues: Mark Twain Hobby Center Crawling Course, Castlewood Park, Bangert Island Park, various construction yards, a parking lot, playground and cul-de-sac.

Set-up Notes: We used a “Tamiya to Deans” plug adapter for the ESC and primarily a Pro-Match 6500 mah 2S Lipo pack . A 3S “shorty” pack was also used for durability testing.

Turning: The Wraith Spawn has better turning than you’d expect for a truck with big tires and locked diffs, but a 2wd buggy it’s not. If you’re running on a high bite surface be prepared to do some upside down roof dancing. The included foams are soft and the front tires will double over on themselves when you are up at speed if premium traction is found. The suspension is soft and tight cornering produces lots of body roll. Take it to some loose stuff and it’s a ton of fun though. You can rip off some sweet power slides through loamy dirt or mud.

Jumping: The Spawn is a decently balanced jumper, helped out no doubt by the 4 big gyroscoping tires. It was taken off some gnarly jumps and with one exception (more on that later) the suspension handled it all with no problem.

Bumps/Whoops: The truck is awesome on the whoops and stays very stable. The problems that locked diffs present when turning are nullified when pinning it in the rough stuff. When throttled up it’ll generally stay on all 4’s and go where you point it.

On-Road: I discussed this during the “turning” section above, but if you run pavement be prepared to be upside down a lot. This truck is setup for off-road so you won’t have much fun if asphalt is your thing.

Grass: This thing eats the grass like a hungry cow. If you plan on doing a lot of running in your yard or in wide open fields then fret not, it can wade through deep grass/leaves with impunity.

Crawling/Trailing: Wraith’s have long been the king of the 2.2 tired scale trail trucks and nothing changes here. The big tires and high ground clearance allow you to take on a wide variety of terrain. The AE-5 ESC has a decent drag brake hold and allows for smooth operation when navigating obstacles. The 20t motor has good wheel speed on 2S and if you use 3S you’ll probably have way more than you need. The truck is a pretty good rock crawler right out of the box as well. The only knock against it is the battery tray being located in the rear. The gives it a rear weight bias when traversing steep stuff and causes it to tumble. Serious crawlers/trailers will want to relocate the battery up front.

Water: This was hands down the most hardcore water testing I’ve ever done. The truck was driven in muddy puddles at first, made a few trips through a shallow (i.e. axle centerline) stream and, after it handled that fine, caution was thrown to the wind and it went deep water wading. Despite being nearly completely submerged and going against a strong current, the Wraith Spawn fought it’s way to dry land each time without even so much as a glitch. It also went mud bogging numerous times and lived to fight another day. If you want to get wet, I can’t think of another truck more suited for it.

Tires: All of our testers remarked at how soft the tires felt. The included Ripsaws feel like the performance oriented R35 soft & sticky compound that Axial sells, despite not being advertised as such. They hooked up to everything and needed no modification, siping, or breaking in to work. The scale Method bead-lock wheels look very trick. We were impressed.

Broken Parts: Nothing broke during “normal” testing so it was time to get stupid. We launched the truck twice off a bridge overhang and it drove away unscathed. It was then hucked off the top of the bridge. The suspension hung to one side and it looked like two shocks were blown out. Instead they had just pulled off the bushings. A simple re-popping put them right back. For a final attempt to grenade something I put it on 3S and bombed around, still to no visible problems. I then hooked it to a pulling sled on concrete. That wasted a rear drive shaft pretty quick and caused one of the wheels to spin out (they are pin drive, not hex). You shouldn’t have any problems with it if you plan on running 2S. If you are going to bump it up to 3S you’ll want to plan on bullet proofing a few spots. All in all, it’s a durable truck.

Misc Notes:

The body was subject of much discussion amongst our reviewers. Some liked the new SUV look, others much preferred the “rock buggy” style of the original Wraith. Everyone agreed that the scale driver looked very cool.

The 32p spur gear w/ dual slipper held up very well. Even when doing our crazy durability testing we never blew it.

If you are looking for a mud truck then look no more. The Wraith Spawn is a ton of fun in the muck and easily handles it with the big tires, waterproof running gear and locked differentials.

It’s inevitable that this truck will be compared to the Yeti when it comes purchase time for many a hobbyist. The general consensus amongst our crew was that this truck is better suited for the person more interested in trailing/crawling whereas the Yeti takes the cake for someone who is more the hardcore basher. Both trucks can do either role with a little modding.

The rear battery tray can be a real PITA to access if you have fat fingers (sorry Steve) because of how tight it’s cramped. It does accommodate a wide variety of packs though.

One of our testers (Rachel) enjoyed the vehicle so much that she plans on buying one upon general release. That has to count for something.

Best Mod Over $5 – Aluminum steering linkage to eliminate all slop. Aluminum knuckles and chubs would also be a great investment.

A = Outstanding/Best in Class, B = Above Average, C = Average, D = Below Average, F = Horrific

Time To Bash: C You’ll need a battery, charger, and four AA’s to get up and running. If you are running lipo you will want to change the included Tamiya style connector to a high current offering.

Workability: B The original Wraith required the removal of multiple body panels (with a lot of screws) to access the guts of the truck. The Spawn’s body comes off with just 4 screws and makes for much easier maintenance. The cool scale looking cage makes some things a bit harder to get too but on the whole it’s not a bad vehicle to turn wrenches on.

Car Show Rating: B The Wraith platform has always been a major head turner with it’s scale looks and large size. The reason it’s a B vs A is because of how mixed the opinions were on the body.

Bash-A-Bility: B The truck easily handled all the abuse we threw at it and only failed once we started intentionally trying to break it. This is a tough platform. The electronics can take 3S juice to up the fun factor, but you’ll want to upgrade the driveshafts accordingly.

Fun Factor: B Those looking for a first dedicated scale bash/trail machine will have a lot of fun with the truck. The big tires let it step over most regular obstacles and the suspension can handle airtime. It’s a nice multipurpose machine that excels when the going gets very tough.

Handling: C The included servo has good yank for holding a nice line on the trail but the suspension doesn’t promote high speed turning. If you fly into a corner with bookoo traction be prepared for a lot of rolling.

Value: B With a price of $369 I think you are getting a great value. It has a nice ESC, good tires and solid servo. You can have a ton of fun right out of the box without needing to spend additional money right away.

Parts Availability: B Ah yes, I remember when the original Wraith was released a few years ago and parts were hard to get. How times have changed. Axial product now occupies a lot of shelf space at most major hobby shops and the aftermarket is so active that in the time it took you to read this sentence, a new accessory was announced.

BigSquid Rating: B The Axial Wraith Spawn is a solid truck that can take a beating. It’s great for a basher looking to get into the world of scale off-roaders or for a scale off-roader looking to get into the bashing scene. The truck can handle a trail run right out of the box and is durable enough to sustain a thrashing at the bash spot. If you dig scale trucks we think you’ll love it.

Axial Wraith Spawn Rock Racer Kit

Strength beyond strength! Photos By Walter Sidas

Since I got my first SCX10 a while back, I’ve been waiting for the next version of the Wraith to come out before pulling the trigger on one. The new Wraith Spawn is now available and let’s just say the wait was well worth it. It features all the same great things about the original vehicle, but with a few key improvements and a killer new body. While there is an RTR version also served up by Axial, we were provided with a kit for our review purposes. The build is fairly straightforward and nothing within the assembly process should prove to stump the builder, even for those new to kits. The performance of the Spawn is amazing and though we didn’t opt for the “Scale” speeds suited for climbing duties, our build project turned out far better than we ever anticipated.

AT A GLANCE WHO MAKES IT: Axial WHO IT’S FOR: Anyone PART NUMBER: AX90056 HOW MUCH: $299.97 BUILD TYPE: Kit

PROS • Sweet looking Spawn body • Updated Wildboar drive shafts • Tons of factory and aftermarket upgrades available • Full steel differentials take loads of abuse

REVIEWER’S OPINION Axial has been at the forefront of the scaler and crawler world since the release of the original Wraith years ago and they’re back with a new, improved platform for their flagship machine. The Wraith Spawn is the perfect vehicle for rock racing, backyard crawling and even competition rock racing. The 4-link suspension allows for an almost limitless number of mods and upgrades and also offers up nimble performance while traversing the rough stuff. Rather than set our machine up for competition or crawling, we felt a moral obligation for copious amounts of power to make our Spawn the ultimate scale bash machine. What do you get when you cross a Castle Creations Sidewinder SCT system with the new Wraith Spawn? Hours of fun out in the yard or on the trail; that’s what you get.

TOOLS AND ACCESSORIES INCLUDED • Four-way wrench and a host of spare plastic parts as there are multiple parts on each tree as supplied from the factory.

ITEMS NEEDED • Motor and ESC • Steering Servo • Radio system • Building tools • 7.2v NiMH stick pack or LiPo • Compatible charger

• Castle Creations 1/10 SV3 Sidewinder SCT System (010-0123-00) $99.99 Yes , 3800Kv is on the high end of the spectrum for motor choices when building a Wraith. However, the steel diffs and slipper clutch should be more than able to stand up to the grunt of the four-pole motor. Of course the sensorless design will pretty much rule out crawling, but this Spawn has got other intentions than conquering rock piles. Using the Castle Link, we can also fine tune the power delivery and other specs on the system.

• Futaba 4PX 4-Channel T-FHSS Transmitter (FUTK4905) $549.99 The flagship surface transmitter for Futaba might be a little overkill for our Spawn basher build, but it’s our “go-to” radio for most projects. Plus, it has loads of crawler features like four-wheel steering mix; just in case we end up modifying our Spawn. The telemetry system is also nice to have to keep a close eye on the temps of our electronics.

• Futaba R304SB S.Bus2 Receiver (FUTL7680) $59.99 The tiny R304SB will be safely stowed in the waterproof receiver box under the hood of our Spawn. Sure, it’s only a four-channel system so we can’t go crazy with the peripherals and such, but this rig isn’t about winches and remote switches. It’s about blasting over bumps and jumps of all sizes and shapes.

ADDITIONAL ITEMS USED • TrakPower LiPo 2S 7.4V 5600mAh 90C Hard Case (TKPC0615) $99.99 With a robust output of 90C and 5600mAh of run time, our Spawn is sure to get great power and longevity from this pack. With the full roll cage on the Wraith models, battery swaps are a bit more tedious than on a standard RC car or truck, you can fit some mighty large packs in the tray. We found it easiest to slide the pack in through the windshield area because of how the wires exit the pack on top rather than the end. • Futaba S9353HV HV High Torque/Speed Servo (S9353HV) $229.99 Keeping with the Futaba theme, we chose the 9353HV for steering responsibilities in our Spawn. The astounding specs on this servo will provide us with all the steering authority we will ever need. The high power draw did, however, require us to use a capacitor on the receiver to keep this monstrous servo from robbing too much power from the radio system. • Futaba Receiver Capacitor (FUTL6500) $7.49 To keep our radio system from browning out, we installed this capacitor in our receiver. We could have also run a Castle BEC to keep the 9353HV servo happily fed with current, but this little unit does the job and tucks right into the receiver box.

HOP-UPS WE RECOMMEND • Axial Aluminum Servo Horn 25T (AX30836) $15.39 To keep up with the abuse we’re going to subject our Spawn to and the huge torque and speed numbers of the servo, it’ll be a good idea to replace the stock plastic servo horn with this alloy unit.

• Robinson Racing Idler Gear Hardened Steel Wraith (1551) $14.39 The only plastic gears in the entire drivetrain on the Spawn are the main gear and the idler gear. Using this hardened steel unit from RRP will keep you on the throttle and not broken down due to a stripped gear.

• Robinson Racing Diff Gear Hardened Steel Bottom Wraith (1552) $19.19 To finish off the all metal conversion of the gears in the Spawn, this steel main gear will stand up to tons of torque from our Castle system.

FEATURE BREAKDOWN

The fully licensed Method Racing wheels and Maxxis Trepador tires not only look awesome, but they perform just as well as their full scale counterparts. The three-piece beadlock wheels do add a bit of time to the build but they negate the need for any glue. I’d rather tighten a bunch of screws than have to glue tires any day. The foam inserts are a perfect match for an all-purpose vehicle that will be run on a variety of surfaces.

‹The WB8 Wildboar Driveshafts have been updated to accommodate the massive amounts of power that folks (like us) are going to be putting into their Spawns. These new units have a larger diameter set screw to keep you on the trail and not on the workbench. Speaking of maintenance, the new shafts also feature a clever little sleeve that slides over each end to retain the cross-pin. This is guaranteed to expedite any repairs or tuning you might need to do on your rig.

‹Axial’s AR60 OCP-Axles (Off Center Pumpkin) are a welcome sight on this new rock racer as well. The rear tube has been beefed up to distribute stress while driving over a wider area, while also trimming it down a bit for better performance. All the steering linkages and mounts (think 4-wheel steering mods) have been removed to cut weight while also streamlining the bottom for better ground clearance. The ring gears, which house the diff lockers, are easily accessed by removing only four screws. This makes repairs or tuning your Spawn easier than ever.

‹Though the roll cage on the Spawn makes battery swaps and maintenance take a bit longer, it also provides more than ample room for the electronics of your choice. You’re pretty much limited to standard 540 size motors, but the rest of the gear can be tucked wherever it’s convenient for you. We had to relocate our ESC to place it over the transmission because the fan on it was obstructing one of the front cross members.

ON THE TRACK

STEERING : Between the tall and sticky sidewall of the tires and the ridiculous specs of the Futaba servo, this Spawn almost has too much steering. We did dial in a great deal of expo on the steering channel to keep us from rolling the truck given the .07 second transit time of the 9353HV servo. Another great thing about the 4PX radio is that we can slow down the speed via the transmitter’s programming. On asphalt, care had to be taken to not send the Spawn into a barrel roll, but that’s what dual rates are for, right? Right! On the trickier, more crawler-like turf, the Futaba servo performed flawlessly. The almost 300 ounces of torque can almost lift the entire truck when pivoting off a rock or log. The universal joints also help out a lot with the steering as they allow for 10 degrees more travel than the dogbone/drive cup setup offers.

ACCELERATION/BRAKING : If there’s one thing all the Axial vehicles excel at, it’s jumping off the starting line. The short gearing and locked axles all but ensure a hard launch if the throttle is buried. Our Spawn was no different as the Castle motor provides ample amounts of torque. The awesome traction from the Maxxis tires doesn’t hurt in the acceleration department either. The top end is somewhat limited, but we can always gear up a tooth or two. Braking is excellent with all the Wraith vehicles and though the Sidewinder ESC doesn’t have a hill brake, we can fine tune the drag brake to the point where our Spawn will be doing front rolls … if we so choose anyway.

HANDLING/JUMPING : The beautiful part about the four-link suspension is that the handling is fantastic. By tweaking the shock oils and spring rates, you can get the Wraith as plush or as stiff as you like. We went somewhere in the middle with our shocks and it worked great for us. Using the stock 30wt oil, our Spawn was able to scramble over ruts and small bumps and very rarely get unstable, while still being able to absorb landings from big air adventures. The great part about the large, 5.5-inch tires is that they have a lot of gyroscopic force, so mid-air attitude adjustments are a breeze. No matter how we hit a jump, the Spawn always squared up for us and settled on all four tires with input on the throttle or brakes. We did manage to try out the low speed capabilities on a few rock piles and the Castle system performed better than we expected. Dialing the start-up power and punch on the Sidewinder had the system feeling pretty smooth on the slow, technical stuff.

DURABILITY : I do have to say that I am blown away at the durability of the Wraith Spawn. We always knew that Axial vehicles are tough as nails, but we fully expected some sort of breakage on our rig with the high power motor and ESC. The body did take quite a beating and we had to pop a wheel off twice to separate the rim as we threw a bead.

WRAP UP It’s a busy, busy world these days and while I’d love to make it to the track every weekend for club races, it’s just not going to happen. With the new Wraith Spawn all built-up as the ultimate bash machine, the backyard is all the track I need. Whether it’s a pile of logs, a few dirt jumps, the wife’s veggie garden or any other obstacle on my property, the Spawn just laughs and dominates it. The Castle Sidewinder system provides amazing power and once a few choice hop-ups are added, this rig will be bullet proof. The wide range of duties the Wraith platform can fulfill is incredible, especially given the simplicity of the design. That’s what makes it so great though. It’s easy to build, relatively easy to maintain and is just a blast to drive. If you’re thinking about building up your own ultimate bash vehicle, give the Wraith Spawn Kit a good hard look.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .

  1. Axail Wraith long travel shocks

Take the Integy 125mm type 2 shocks. Compressed they're 86mm hole to hole vs the stock axial shocks that are 79mm compressed hole to hole. They're nearly the same length compressed however uncompressed the Integy's are 125mm and the axials are 104mm. Haven't tested out the Integy's out yet but I do plan on it.

  5. Review: TopCad 105mm Aluminum Piggyback Shocks for Axial Wraith

The first episode of my Axial Wraith project had me installing some aluminum goodies to help boost both the look and durability of the crawler. The next area I decided to work on is the suspension; more specifically, the shocks.
