Facade of Baler Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish, or more commonly known as Baler Church, was constructed back in 1611. It first stood on the site of an important battle called the "Siege of Baler" which took place during the Philippine Revolution.

The church was initially made from bamboo and nipa. Years after, it was renovated using stones and rocks that were held together by lime and honey. However, the church was later destroyed by a massive tidal wave known as "Tromba Marina" in 1735. Soon after that natural disaster, locals rebuilt the chapel on the highest point in San Luis Street in Barangay Buhangin, where it currently stands.

During the Spanish period in the country, Spanish forces made the church their garrison until they surrendered it in 1899. Aside from this, Baler Church was also the home of a famous large bell called La Campana De Baler. Fray Jose de Esperagoza brought it to the province in the 17th century. The bell later became well-known for its loud echoing sounds that even reached the neighboring towns of San Luis, Maria, and Dipaculao.

In light of its cultural significance in Baler, the National Historical Institute proclaimed it as a historical landmark in 2000.

11. Baler Hanging Bridge

Baler Hanging Bridge above a river

The Baler Hanging Bridge is situated along Zabali Road and connects the barangays of Tibang and Sabang. The bridge is made of wooden planks and railings that are suspended above a wide river by sturdy metal cables. It measures about a meter in width and is over a hundred meters long.

While locals often use it for their daily errands, it has become one of the well-known tourist attractions in Baler, Aurora over the years due to the stunning views it offers. As you make your way from one end of the bridge to the other, you will be able to get a panoramic view of the river and the vast mountainscape in the distance. Travelers can also catch a glimpse of the river's opening that connects to Baler Bay.

Visitors who traverse the bridge are treated to a refreshing breeze as well, thanks to its position. Before reaching the other end, you can also take the time to take photos of the beautiful scenery around you. On either end of the walkway are a couple of souvenir shops that feature local delicacies and trinkets that showcase the area's culture.

10. Baler Lighthouse

Baler Lighthouse on a hill in Baler

Another popular spot that provides tourists with stunning views of Baler's natural wonders is the Baler Lighthouse, one of the top lighthouses in the Philippines. This white structure sits on one of the hills of Sitio Tibag. After arriving at the parking area, visitors will have to hike up the hill to reach the towering structure.

Once you reach the top of the hill, you are immediately rewarded with a stunning view of Baler Bay's deep blue waters. You can also see Diguisit Beach from the hill's peak. For travelers looking for an even better vantage point, you can climb up the steps that circle the lighthouse to reach its top.

From the top, you can feel the sea breeze blowing while enjoying the panoramic view of the bay and the nearby hills. You can also see the structure's huge light and solar panels that power it. While it no longer serves as a beacon for ships coming to Baler, tourists still drop by to take in the view.

9. Museo de Baler

Immerse yourself in the rich culture of the province by visiting their local museum, Museo de Baler. One of the must-visit museums in the Philippines, the two-story building stands in Quezon Park in Barangay Poblacion. Even before entering the museum, you can already see a beautiful artwork on its red brick exterior.

The installation depicts crucial moments and individuals throughout the province's history.  Meanwhile, a statue of the late Philippine President Manuel L. Quezon, a native of Baler, sits in the center of the park.

Inside the museum, you will see exhibits and several historical artifacts that date back to the Spanish colonization period in the Philippines. Among these items are old letters from missionaries who lived in the region from the early 1600s up to the late 1890s.

On its second floor, visitors can find pieces relating to the Siege of Baler. These artworks include paintings of those who took part in the fight and those who survived it as well. Along with the historical pieces, the museum also features more contemporary pieces of art. The most notable ones are the props from the 2008 Filipino drama film named after the province.

8. Dona Aurora Aragon-Quezon Home

A few minutes away from the museum is another historic site: a replica of the ancestral home of Aurora Quezon, the wife of the late president Manuel L. Quezon. The cement and wooden home is situated on the corner of Rizal Street and San Luis street. It also features a roof made from dried nipa leaves, which was often used for traditional homes in the Philippines.

However, the house is not an exact copy of Aurora's original home, as local authorities recreated it with sturdier material. Despite this, it still features many items, such as a coal-heated iron that were likely used by Aurora's family back in the day. The interior also houses a large colored painting of Aurora and the late president.

While Aurora was widely known as the second First Lady of the Philippines, she was an important historical figure in her own right as well. Aurora gained the respect of her fellow Baler natives and other Filipinos through her various humanitarian efforts. Among these was her time as the first Chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross and her involvement in advocating for Filipino women's right to vote.

In honor of her notable contributions, the province where Baler is located, Aurora, was named after her.

View of the Balete Tree's roots and canopy

The Balete Tree in Aurora is known for being the biggest of its kind in the whole continent of Asia. This enormous tree is cared for in a park inside the municipality of Maria Aurora. This tree has been around for over 600 years and has grown to about 200 feet.

Balete trees are also often regarded as homes of fairies and other magical creatures in Philippine mythology. Whether or not you believe in myths, you can slip past an opening between the roots of the tree here to inspect for yourself.

The tree is so huge that several people can fit inside its interior of twisted roots. The interior appears almost like an otherworldly destination, as light can only come in from the gaps between the entangling roots.

From inside the tree, you can climb up the tangle of roots to get a closer look at the tree's large crown. However, scaling the tree from the inside involves squeezing through tight gaps. Aside from this, travelers can also climb the tree from the outside by clinging to the sturdy roots that make up the gigantic evergreen.

6. Diguisit and Aniao Islet

One rock formation in Diguisit Beach, Baler

Diguisit Beach is one of the popular surfing spots in Baler and is located about 11 KM from the town proper. In addition to the constant waves that are great for surfing, this white sand beach also boasts unique rock formations and crystal clear water.

The most famous formations here are the Aniao Islets, which are two small islands. These islets were naturally shaped by the strong waves that slam against the shore when the winds are strong. Surrounding these sturdy formations were rocky landscapes that become pools of cool water whenever the tide is low.

  • Book a Dingalan Aurora day tour

Each islet is also home to small patches of greenery that make their profile even more unique. The islets make for amazing photos at sunset when the tide is low, and the orange-pinkish hues reflect on the pools of water surrounding them. Aside from the natural formations, Diguisit Beach is also known as an ideal location for snorkeling from May to November when the winds are weaker.

5. Ampere Beach and Rock Formations

Rock formations at Ampere Beach, Baler

Another destination that features rock formations is the Ampere Beach, just west of Baler Beach. In contrast to the finer sands of most beaches that line Baler Bay, this spot boasts a shoreline comprised mainly of different-sized pebbles. While it is not an ideal swimming spot due to the strong waves that lap the shore, it still attracts tourists thanks to its unique landscape.

Aside from admiring the sturdy rock formations that jut from the beach's waters, tourists can also make their own "rock formations" with the smooth pebbles that make up the shore. Feel free to get creative as you stack rocks on top of each other, and make sure to snap a photo of your small towers for a unique souvenir! Though the pebble beach and the large rock formations are the main draws of this attraction, travelers can find a lesser-known spot just past the karst-like walls.

Beyond the rock walls, you can find a cave. Locals are said to forecast the weather by measuring how loud the waves slam against the interior of the cave. The louder it gets, the worse the weather would supposedly be.

4. Ermita Hill

The entrance to Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is a historical and natural landmark located in Barangay Zabali. Its cultural significance dates back to 1735, when a large tidal wave called Tromba Marina struck the region. During the natural disaster, the residents headed up the hill to seek refuge from the fast-rising waters that were engulfing the homes.

However, only a few families managed to make it up the hill in time, while the strong surge of water wiped out the rest. To commemorate the hardships that the natives had to overcome, statues depicting people helping each other scale the hill were placed here. Most of the artworks were put along the cemented path that leads up to the hilltop.

Once you reach the top, you will enter a deck that provides a panoramic view of Baler Bay, its surrounding forestry, and the vast Pacific Ocean. Take your time to relax and take photos before heading back down. There are also gazebos where you can sit and take in the view and a modest chapel where you can say a prayer.

3. Dicasalarin Cove

View of Dicasalrin Cove from a nearby hill

Dicasalarin Cove is a private-owned beach that attracts tourists with its pristine waters and stunning white sand beach. The beach is surrounded by natural landscapes that often break the waves, making the water here calmer than most beaches in Baler. Since the area is managed by the owners of Costa Pacifica, a nearby resort, travelers must first register here to reach the cove.

The cove sits about 10 KM away from the resort and best accessed by car or renting out tricycles or motorcycles. After arriving at the cove, you will be greeted by a picturesque shoreline that stretches for miles on both sides. Unwind and enjoy the cove's cool waters by going for a swim or snorkeling.

Aside from the cove's shore, travelers can also head up to the nearby lighthouse to get a beautiful view of the bay. Guests also frequent the lighthouse because of its more modern and geometric shape. If you want to extend your stay on this secluded cove, you can also rent tents, air beds, and sleeping bags. You can set up camp along the shoreline to fall asleep to the gentle sound of waves lapping the beach.

2. Ditumabo Falls

View of Ditumabo Falls from a natural pool

The Ditumabo Falls is a grand waterfall that stands at about 140 feet tall. Locals commonly refer to it as The Mother Falls, largely due to its sheer size, especially when compared to other waterfalls in the province. Though it is located in the neighboring town of San Luis, this attraction is often visited by tourists when staying in Baler since it is only about 15 KM from Baler's town proper.

Nestled in a lush forest, travelers first have to trek through rivers and rocky paths to reach the majestic waterscape. The trek can also prove to be difficult as the rocks in the rivers can be slippery. While the journey to the falls is not smooth, just getting to see it up close makes the trip worthwhile.

After arriving at the falls, you will be greeted by natural pools that the clear, ice-cold water drops into. The rocky basin is large and is ideal for swimming, so make sure to take a dip and take in the grandeur of this natural wonder.

View of Sabang Beach's shoreline

Sabang Beach is a gray sand beach that is widely regarded as the birthplace of surfing in Baler. Thanks to the frequent waves that approach the shore, it is a great place to learn how to surf for the first time. Various shops and resorts in Baler that line the shore offer lessons for beginners and even more advanced surfers.  It is one of the top places to visit in Baler, Aurora.

Baler natives began to surf in 1976, when the epic war movie "Apocalypse Now" filmed in Charlie's Point, a resort along this beach. Soon after the production wrapped up filming, locals taught themselves how to ride the waves with surfboards that the movie's crew had left behind. Since then, more and more people come to this beach to learn as well.

Thanks to the large crowds of surfers that the waves here attract, the beach scene is often lively. After you've had your fill of surfing, you can then enjoy the delicious cuisine served at the beachside restaurants. Travelers can also stay until after the sun sets to partake in the local nightlife scene or to simply go on a stroll along the two-kilometer-long stretch of sand.

Along with surfing, guests often come to this beach to marvel at the stunning colors of a sunrise. Since the beach faces the east and opens to the Pacific Ocean, travelers can get an unobstructed view of the sun as it breaks through the night sky and paints it in warm, orange hues.

BALER ITINERARY: 14 Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

BALER ITINERARY: 14 Best Things to Do & Places to Visit

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

#BalerBalikan. That was our hashtag when I first set foot in Baler with friends. I got a message from a friend asking me if I wanted to come join him on a trip to Baler. I hit back with a resounding yes. We found ourselves at 1 am traveling from EDSA to NLEX and SCTEX. We finally arrived in Baler very early in the morning. And left on the same day at 8 pm. It was sweet and short. Like a whirlwind romance. Wuw.

Months later, I was back with the Poor Traveler team, and then for the third time with my relatives. And recently, I returned with the whole North Philippines Visitors Bureau’s Lakbay Norte 8 participants. You would think I’d be tired of Baler by now but I still enjoyed every bit of it. I think my friends and I fell four letters short when we coined our hashtag on our very first trip. It should have been this — #BalerBinabalikan.

Baler, despite its growing tourism industry, has maintained its laidback vibe which I love. The scenic drive presents travelers with a long (sometimes winding) stretch of lush fields and forests and provincial tableau. Baler and other nearby towns boast various attractions, whether involving nature and challenging activities or downtown chill time. Here are some of the places to visit and things to do in Baler.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

SABANG BEACH

baler aurora tourist spot

Sabang Beach is synonymous to the town of Baler. Most of the resorts and business establishments are concentrated around the beach area. The sand is fine and brown (dark brown when wet) but it actually doesn’t matter because the main draw is the swell. Here, beginners and pro surfers gather for the love of riding the waves. During high noon and when the waters are flat, the blue hue is visible instead of the foamy swells. After a day of being tossed here and there by the waves, reward yourself with a massage or spa service.

Rates: Surfboard rental + instructor fee: P350/hour Surfboard rental only: P200/hour or P800/day

DITUMABO FALLS

baler aurora tourist spot

Some say that when visiting waterfalls, the best time is during the wet/rainy season because the cascades are raging and more visible. But rainy or not, Ditumabo “Mother” Falls is a sight to behold. It’s grand and imposing. And cold. I mean, the water is cold. Hehe. To stand in her presence and meet her face to face, you need to take a 20-minute trek. The terrain is mostly flat with a few gentle slopes and a couple of boulder-laden river crossing. Near the jump-off point, there are food stalls. If you are bringing a car, parking is available. Although Ditumabo is located in San Luis, you can easily reach it from Baler.

Entrance Fee: P30/person Parking Fee: P30/vehicle Tour Guide Fee: P200/guide Location: Ditumabo Mother Falls Street, San Luis, Aurora

CAUNAYAN FALLS

baler aurora tourist spot

Also located in San Luis, just south of Baler, Caunayan Falls is much easier to reach than the more famous Ditumabo Falls. The cascade is also gentler than the Mother Falls. The cold water is clear and shallow. We went there early in the morning, so it was like we own the place. Although shallow, the current can get strong, especially near the falls. You may add this to your itinerary or make this an alternative to Ditumabo if you got a senior companion who can only trek a short distance. You can access it through Amatorio Resort in Barangay L. Pimentel. From the parking area, you just need to walk a short distance, not more than five minutes to reach it.

Entrance Fee: P20 (adults) / P10 (children) / P15 (senior) Cottage Rental: P200 (small) / P500 (big) Location: Barangay L. Pimentel, San Luis, Aurora

DIGUISIT FALLS

baler aurora tourist spot

You might miss the jump-off point as this is located on the side of the road. If you are coming from the town, it would be on the right-hand side of the road. Across the jump-off point, your marker would be an area with cottages and tables for rent. The climb is easy and quick. In less than 10 minutes, you can reach the falls. Just be careful climbing up and going down because it can get slippery.

Entrance Fee: FREE Cottage Rental: P200 Landmark: No particular landmark, but you will notice vehicles parked on the side of the road and on the other side, lining the coast, are rows of cottages. In Google Maps, it’s somewhere in between Dragonfly Resort and Sea Grace Villas.

DIGUISIT BEACH & ANIAO ROCK FORMATIONS

baler aurora tourist spot

Just a few meters away from the Diguisit Falls are Diguisit Beach, Aniao (also Anyao) Rock Formations, and Lukso-Lukso Islets (or Diguisit Islets). Unlike the other beaches in Baler, the rocky feature of this place makes it a unique beach destination in town. During low tide, you can explore by walking further to the islets. Make sure you wear thick-soled footwear as most rocks are sharp. If you are spending more than one day in Baler and you got no problem waking up early, go there to witness the sunrise.

Entrance: FREE unless you want to enter through the resort which collects P20. Cottage Rental: P300-500 (nipa hut)

CEMENTO BEACH

Aside from Sabang, one of the surfing spots in Baler is Cemento Beach, said to be much more challenging than Sabang. Cemento’s Cobra Reef got its name from its waves, which resemble the head of a cobra about to strike. Surfers prefer to surf in the morning when the water’s clarity is glasslike (which depends on the weather condition).

baler aurora tourist spot

You may access Cemento Beach via Nature Green Forest Resort if you want to experience both the waves and calm waters. For a resort that is located by the road (and a bridge), it still retains the raw beauty of nature. Kayaking along the tributary is one of its draws. It also has a floating cottage, a pool, and nipa hut cottages.

DICASALARIN COVE

baler aurora tourist spot

If you continue driving beyond Diguisit beach, you will reach the entrance to Dicasalarin Cove near the end of the national/public road, which is punctuated by the PAG-ASA Radar Station. Dicasalarin is a private beach. To go there, you need to register first at Costa Pacifica. The road is too steep and winding, so you need a car or hire a habal-habal.

Opening hours: 8:00 am-5:00 pm Entrance Fee: P300 (P100 for Costa Pacifica guests) Habal-habal ride: P200-P300 roundtrip

baler aurora tourist spot

Another way is to avail SeaSta Beach Resort ‘s boat tour. The travel time from Baler Fishport to Dicasalarin is over an hour. Note that the boat won’t dock but would just stop and float around Dicasalarin Bay to let you do a photo op with the cove as your backdrop. After the tour, you might want to try water sports with friends or family. Buoyancy Water Sports is also stationed at Baler Fishport. Choose your poison: Flying Fish, UFO Couch or Banana Boat.

HISTORICAL TOUR

baler aurora tourist spot

The town center is not the typical commercial hub that other towns have where most of the business and trading happen. Baler’s town breathes history, a constant reminder of their heritage and how the town came to be. You don’t need to walk too long or ride a tricycle to cover all these landmarks: Baler Church, Doña Aurora House, Quezon Park, Museo de Baler, and the Baler Icon.

Baler has a dizzying array of food options, from restaurants to side-street vendors and peddlers. Here are some of the food and restaurants that we’ve tried so far:

  • Kubli Bistro. A very cozy restaurant where you can enjoy well-presented meals while serenaded by the guest band. It was my second time here and the food selections are still impeccable. Address: Alley 2, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 4:00 pm – 12:00 mn
  • Bayler View. An alfresco type of restaurant where you can have the view of Sabang Beach. The menu contains a selection of both western and Filipino food. Address: Buton Street, Barangay Sabang, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 6:30 am – 8:00 pm (Sunday – Thursday) / 6:30 am – 9:00 pm (Friday to Saturday)
  • Mumunsi Café. A café that offers grub and drinks that are made of or contain local chocolate which they also produce. Address: Barangay Suklayin, Baler, Aurora
  • Myrtle Park. A hip hangout place that is also a skatepark where folks and pets mingle leisurely while enjoying the music, the food, and the drinks. They constantly update the menu as it is collaborative in nature. Just let the good vibes flow. Address: Buton Street, Barangay Sabang, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 6:00 pm – 1:00 am (daily)
  • Dialyn’s Bakeshop. An established pasalubong bakeshop in Baler famous for their brazo de mercedes, yema swirl, asado buns, and more. Address: Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 7:00 am – 8:00 pm (daily)
  • Bike Kings Kitchen. A bicycle-themed restaurant. It has two floors and the interior is laden with decorations related to cycling. Address: Aurora Street, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora

Opening Hours: 6:00 am – 9:00 pm (daily)

  • Gerry Shan’s Picnic Bay. An affordable all-you-can-eat restaurant that could make you forget, not your name, but your diet. What diet? You’ve been warned. Address: Quezon Street, Poblacion, Baler, Aurora Opening Hours: 10:00 am – 8:00 pm
  • Baler Local Products. Guys! We can’t get enough of Great Harvest Creamy Peanut Butter! Other not-to-be-missed local products are Pure Yema Spread, suman (sticky rice), and bukayo (sweetened coconut strips).
  • Street food! You will find Button Street lined with street food vendors and peddlers. There are kwek-kwek , isaw , babrbecue, betamax , siomai, adobong mani , and more!

ERMITA HILL

baler aurora tourist spot

Along the highway, on the way to Cemento, Diguisit, and Dicasalarin, you will see Tromba Marina, a sculpture depicting one event that wiped out the entire town. Well, almost. According to locals, when a tsunami hit the town of Baler, only seven families (and a priest) survived by running uphill. That historic hill is Ermita Hill. From here, you can get a glimpse of Sabang Beach, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding areas. There are food stalls, viewing decks, and a parking area. The entrance fee will benefit scholars studying at a nearby college.

Entrance Fee: P15 Parking Fee: P10 Location: Barangay Zabali, Baler, Aurora

VINCENT GONZALES ART MUSEUM

baler aurora tourist spot

Strolling around Baler, you will get this laidback, bohemian vibe where you can see a pop of color here and there, murals, and a number of hotels and restaurants with unique and creative concepts. Local artist, Vincent Gonzales, put up a contemporary art museum that showcases his works. Although not exactly located in Baler, it is very accessible as it is just along the highway on the way to Baler. When we visited, the artworks displayed mirrored Baler’s landscape (and seascape). Other works include mixed-media arts and surreal pieces with social commentaries.

Opening Hours: 10:00 am – 5:00 pm (Sunday – Friday); CLOSED (Saturday) Location: Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road, San Luis, Aurora Contact Detail: +63 920 224 1524 Official Website: vincent-gonzales-art-museum.business.site

JOKER’S HIDEAWAY

baler aurora tourist spot

Another attraction accessible from Baler is Joker’s Hideaway, a sports leisure place that offers 16 different mini golf courses. It is located in the nearby town of Maria Aurora. Joker’s Hideaway caters to both beginners and expert, so worry not if you haven’t tried playing golf in the past. No judgment here. Hehe. Well, that depends on who are you with. :p Aside from the mini-golf courses, it also has a tower with a trap door, artic=ficial waterfall, and bungalow huts. When we were there, the entrance fee was P50 per adult and P25 per child, inclusive of unlimited playtime and golf gear. You may contact the management for the updated rates.

Karla Around the World

Don't just wonder, wander too. (travel destinations), baler travel guide : explore all these baler aurora tourist spots more than just surfing.

Baler Travel Guide

Baler, Aurora, is one of the most popular vacationing destinations in Luzon – the leading cause? Their panoramic beaches just perfect for surfing. Many surfers in Metro Manila love heading up to Baler due to its relatively accessible location in Luzon, but Baler Aurora beaches aren’t all that the Aurora capital has to offer! It has historical spots, museums, art exhibits, great food, and more! With both culture and active life intertwined, it’s hard not to fall in love at first sight – or visit, in this case. And many people seem to be falling in love each day, as seen with the recent upsurge of new trendy establishments and restaurants which makes the town an up and coming, all-in-one destination. It can be hard to keep track of everything the coastal town has to offer, so if you’re looking for a great guide to Baler filled with more than just information about catching waves and water activities, then look no further because you’ll catch an in-depth inside to the ins and outs of the vibrant surfing paradise nestled up north.

How to get to Baler

Excited and raring to drive up to Baler? Here’s all the ways you can do it, ranging from buses to private transportation so you can take your pick based on budget and preference.

As of writing, there is only one bus company that has a route from Manila heading directly to Baler – the Genesis Transport Service. You can book and ride with them from the Cubao Bus Terminal. They have two different bus options, the regular bus and the Joy Bus.

  • Regular Bus : Their regular (yet still air-conditioned!) bus option which rides for a total of approximately 6-7 hours from Cubao to Baler. A ticket will cost you P450, with no advance bookings required.
  • Joy Bus: Still air-conditioned like their regular buses, but much more luxurious. The sleeper buses come fully equipped with an internet connection, snacks, blankets, pillows, and a hygiene kit as well as a bus stewardess to assist you with your concerns. The Joy Bus runs three times a day, with trips lasting 5 hours each at a fare of P750 per head.

Private Car

Travelling via the R-8 with a private vehicle will take you around 5 hours assuming no traffic and rest stops are made along the way.

How to Get Around in Baler

Motorbike :.

Riding on the back of a driver’s motorbike, also locally known as habal-habal , is a popular way of getting around town with ease. A ride usually costs around 10-20 pesos per person depending on the distance. You can find them in the same places you can usually find a tricycle pick-up and drop-off point.

Similar to the prices of a motorbike, riding a tricycle will cost you 10-20 pesos. If you want to have a tricycle drive you around the entire day instead of having to find one over and over again, you can book your own convenient tricycle tours in the area, usually costing around 500-1000 pesos per day for a group of 3 people.

Baler Aurora Tourist Spots : What to do in Baler

1. go surfing – or learn how to surf if you don’t know yet.

Baler Itinerary

For Beginners

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

For Intermediates to Experts

  • Charlie’s Point : This surfing point was made popular not only in the Philippines, but all across the world by being featured in the hit epic war film Apocalypse Now. Its local name is “ Kagewad” , and is known for its right-hand and left-hand break waves which requires surfers to know how to turn their boards properly to stay afloat.
  • Lindy’s Point : One of the formerly best-kept secrets of avid surfers, Lindy’s Point has an abundance of tall, short and sharp break waves which experts love to test their skills on – and get their hearts pumping with an adrenaline rush.
  • Cobra Reef : Called “ Dapa” by the locals, Cobra Reef in Cemento Beach is another spot frequented by surfing experts from all over the world. Its exceptionally high waves range from around 4-6 during the low season and up to a whopping 12-14 feet during the high season.

Given Baler’s worldwide reputation as a great surfing destination, there are a lot of surf schools which are well-established in the area. One personal favorite of mine, however, was the Nalu Surf Camp primarily because of the presence of good, accredited instructors. Surfing lessons at Nalu cost P350 per hour, all-inclusive of your personal instructor, surfboard, and even a free beer and picture. If you’re a more experienced surfer and just want to rent a board, their rates are P200 per hour, P400 for half day, and P800 for the whole day.

2. Climb Up the Balete Tree

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

The Balete tree is a 600-year old millenium tree with big, hanging roots – the biggest tree out of all of the Balete trees in the area. The hanging roots intertwine and twist together to form a cave where visitors can go inside. Given the tree’s strong foundation and hundreds of years of age, it’s very sturdy and easy to climb! Even amateur climbers and children will be able to climb ⅓ up to half of the length of the tree for some great pictures. There is an entrance fee of P15, as well as an additional P10 if you plan to enter the tree.

3. Hike Ditumabo Falls

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

The Ditumabo Falls in the town of San Luis is considered the largest waterfall in all of the Aurora province, featuring a 140-feet tall water drop. The hike takes around 30-45 minutes, where you’ll be walking over the rocky paths and streams. The bridge is currently down so visitors are expected to cross the river in order to get to the falls – so do be prepared to get quite soaked in the knee deep water. The entrance fee to the falls costs P30 and the required tour guide feecosts P200.

4. Check out the Rock Formations in Diguisit Beach

baler aurora tourist spot

Diguisit Beach is indeed a popular surfing spot in Baler, but it is also frequented because of its beautiful rock formations right beside the Cobra Reef. Because the beach faces the northwest, the location is the perfect place to watch the sunrise and the sunset, the beautiful orange-red background perfectly foregrounded by the rock formations in front – really great for pictures and Instagram shots. Because the beach is privately owned, visitors will have to pay an entrance fee of P20 before exploring the vicinity however  just nearby, there’s a public beach entrance—you can use that too if you wish.

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

5. Diguisit Falls

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

Unlike most other waterfall attractions, visiting the Diguisit falls requires absolutely no entrance fee. The falls are easily accessible near the Diguisit beach, located just right beside the road. There are multiple cascading mini-falls that form small pools where you can sit in and have the flowing water massage your back – do be careful, however, as the vicinity is rather rocky and slippery, definitely best traversed using proper footwear with thick, non-slip soles.

6. Go Boating at the Cruise Dicasalarin Cove

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

Dicasalarin Cove is a secluded beach cove around 30 minutes away from Sabang Beach. Many different companies offer boat tour packages, like Seasta Beach Resort. There are many pretty sights and picturesque scenes of the pretty light-colored sand and crystal waters, but do be prepared for big waves and motion sickness if you go on a cruise during times where weather isn’t so good and the waters aren’t so calm. Once you arrive at the cove, there is a trail leading up to the Baler lighthouse for a terrific view of the surrounding islets. The area around the cove itself is quite beautiful and untouched since it’s private, there are no hotels, resorts and tourist setups on the beach and there are even natural caves to explore. Of course, the main attraction of the cove is its unique rock formations. Entrance costs P300 per person and the fee for the gate pass can be paid at the Bahia de Baler Garden Resort

7. Enjoy Watersports

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

Of course, one of the main reasons to visit Baler is for its watersports (aside from surfing, that is). There are many different water sports you can try out, even extreme ones for the more daring of heart. There are various tour groups and company which offer packages, like Buoyancy Water Sports that has packages with each activity good for 15 minutes.

  • UFO Couch : This was my personal favorite! It’s where you and a group of friends sit on an inflatable “couch” while being dragged across the waters by an engine-powered boat. Fair warning, however – if you’re the one seated in the center then you may exert more effort than the rest. But if you love the thrill and adventure, then this is definitely the ride for you. This is also perfect for guys or heavier individuals so the weight is balanced evenly throughout the inflatable couch. It costs P350 per person, with a minimum of 6 people and a maximum of 7.
  • Flying Fish: This ride requires more hand power and action – the ones seated at the bottom or right side struggles a bit more. Like with the UFO Couch, you’re placed on an inflatable raft connected to a boat but this time you have to hold on tightly to control and keep balance as you “fly” through the waters and up into the air. Flying Fish costs P550 per person, minimum of 4 and a maximum of 5.
  • Banana Boat : A bit more lax and easy compared to the ones above, but still rather thrilling! Your group sits on a banana-shaped boat and rides through the waters. P250 per person, minimum of 6 and maximum of 10.
  • Torpedo: Ride in a raft with two other friends as the engine boat “torpedoes” you through the waves and the waters, a fast and fun-filled ride. Costs P1000 per ride, good for 2-3 persons.

8. Appreciate Nature (Nature Green Forest Resort)

The Nature Green Forest Resort in Cemento Beach is ideal for a quick getaway from the bustling, noisy city life and into the green, fresh beauty of nature. It features a private beach area, lots and lots of trees and shrubs, as well as clean, cool and comfortable accommodation. There are also activities available to do at the resort, such as bamboo and kayak riding.

9. Play Mini Golf at Joker’s Hideaway

Joker’s Hideaway is 15 kilometres away from Baler, an athletic field that features mini golf as its main attraction. It has a 16-hole course that goes through a very picturesque scene of grassy fields and mini fish ponds and pools – so you can play and enjoy the scenery at the same time! You can play all you want for just P50 per person, P25 for children.

10. Go on an Organic Farm Tour and try Wine Berries (Azbahaen)

The Azbahaen Leisure Farm and Resort, aside from being an accommodation, is also filled with swimming pools, fish ponds, and organic herb and vegetable gardens! You can go on a tour throughout the property, buy some of the fruits and vegetables for your very own salad – topped with the fish you can catch at their ponds! They also grow their very own wine berries. It’s definitely a home away from home – while there isn’t an internet connection and phone signal, you’ll still feel content and at peace.

11. Go on a Historical Walking Tour

Baler isn’t only a town for recreation. It’s home to lots of museums and historical locations – after all, Baler is a very old city! Here’s some of the destinations you can visit on your very own historical walking tour, allowing you to catch a glimpse on the heritage and background of the quaint surfing town. What’s more, all of these historical structures are easily accessible to one another by short walks.

 Baler Aurora Tourist Places

Quezon Park: Quezon Park is a small park which houses a statue of the late Philippine president Manuel Quezon, seated at the very center of the uplifted concrete covered in grass and fenced in. You can also find a replica of Quezon’s home where he grew up, as well as the vehicle he used while he was the president of the country.

Baler Aurora Tourist Places

12. Appreciate Art

Art-lovers will want to stop at the Vincent Gonzales Art Museum on the way out of Baler in San Luis, Aurora. It features beautiful paintings inspired by the people and natural beauties of Aurora and Baler, vibrant and saturated depictions of stones and waves of local beaches as well as portraits encapsulating the culture and heritage of the early Filipino citizens. Even if you’re not an artist yourself, the paintings are admirable and will definitely make you stop and stare.

13. Sunrise walk

Of course, a great way to top off your beach visits in Baler is by getting up early and going for a walk to catch the sunrise. The beaches in Aurora are definitely perfect for those “long walks on the beach”, especially when aside from the waves and the waters, the beautiful rock formations are also there to catch your eye. A good time to start seeing the sunrise is around 5:00 in the morning. Plus, the soft Baler sands are great for walking on barefoot.

14. Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill is a great place to catch views of the towns below – particularly the town of Baler as well as the nearby Sabang Beach. But what makes the area all the more interesting is the fact that, according to the locals, the coastal area near Baler where many communities and families once lived was completely devastated by strong, tall waves in the past, destroying many homes and taking lives. Only six families were able to make it out of the disaster by climbing up the Ermita Hill – hence why there is a statue of individuals with interlocked hands climbing the hill present. Apparently, all of the Baler locals’ heritage and ancestry can be traced back to those very six families. There is an entrance fee of P15, and the money earned goes to funding the education of local students at a nearby college in Baler.

Where to Eat in Baler

As mentioned earlier, Baler’s rise in popularity in the past few years has led to lots of new establishments popping up – and that includes a horde of great restaurants and eateries. After all, there’s nothing better to top off a day at the beach or the museum than with a nice, hearty meal or hot coffee paired with a sweet dessert.

1. The Bays Inn

The Bay’s Inn restaurant overlooks a view of the beautiful Sabang beach, serving various Filipino favorites such as their popular crispy pata, best paired with a selection of ice cold beers. I was surprised to see that their restaurant was so new, recently having had a soft opening. We’ve been here before but this time around they reconstructed and it looks so different now. The food, however, tastes just how I remember – still super good.

2. Myrtle Park

Baler Itinerary

Myrtle Park is an up and coming food and skateboard park with cool aesthetics perfect for a lifestyle Instagram post. They also have a bar and the drinks sold there are quite affordable – my double shot of whiskey only cost me P200. They have a cool ambiance too, no wonder it’s where many surfboarders and skateboarders like to hang out after a long day through the parks and at the beach. During events, they have lots of extra decorations up such as neon lights and fog machines.

3. Yellow Fin Bar & Grill

Yet another bar on Buton Street close to the popular Sabang beach, Yellow Fin is home to a laid-back, open air ambience where you can enjoy meals that come fresh off the grill – particularly fish and other freshly caught seafood. Have a drink, kick back and relax to the tune of the old-school music blasting through the speakers.

4. Seasta Beach Resort

The Seasta Beach Resort in Zabali is home to a hidden, delicious secret – their bar and restaurant which is set up to resemble and function like a traditional British pub. Here you can have a nice drink alongside both Filipino and international finger foods or pulutan while watching sports on their flat screen television. After having a meal, visitors can have some fun on the darts board or pool table.

5. Bike Kings

The Bike Kings Kitchen has cool chairs that make you feel as if you’re on a bike yourself – there are normal chairs too, however, for those who want to be more comfortable while they eat. Bike Kings has a lovely ambience centered around the theme of bikes, so you can find bikes, trinkets and old-school knick knacks and displays littered around. Aside from the surroundings, the restaurant also serves delicious and affordable Filipino food.

6. Kubli Bistro

Kubli Bistro is one of Baler’s most beloved restaurants, prized for its great food. They serve Filipino, Mexican, American, and Italian dishes so you have a wide range of different options to pick on the menu. Some of their most popular include the Kubli rice, pizza, and tacos. They also have a live band which usually plays acoustic music as you eat, making for a very enjoyable and entertaining dining experience.

7. La Patricia Hotel and Restaurant

La Patricia Hotel is a lovely place to stay in and of itself, but its in-house restaurant is a great spot to eat as well. La Patricia’s restaurant hosts a bountiful yet affordable buffet serving all sorts of different Filipino favorites such as grilled fish and meats paired with rice and veggies – all served on banana leaves so you can eat with your hands.

8. Gerry Shan’s Picnic Bay

Affordable and delicious are two words that best describe Gerry Shan’s. Despite coming with a very enticing 200 peso price tag, the restaurant doesn’t skimp on its variety of meals ranging from seafood like squid and shrimp as well as meats like chicken and beef. They even serve desserts, drinks, and salads to help you wash it all down.

9. Mumunsi Chocolate Café

As the name implies, this is a great place to get your chocolate fix. Mumunsi is a serene cafe with a variety of different – and adventurous – chocolate drinks and desserts. It’s a perfect fit, considering that rainy Aurora is one of the leading producers of cacao in the Philippines. You can try out a range of dark, milk, and white cacao concoctions as well as some more interesting menu items such as chili chocolate bars and spicy hot chocolate – perfect for simmering down after a chill day catching waves.

Of course, Baler is an ever-growing town with new establishments and activities popping up each day – but this guide is a great place to start. With everything you could ever want at your fingertips – beaches, surfing, water sports, great food, great cafes – it’s hard to convince yourself not to visit the stunning surfing town up north. Hi! Thanks for this review. ☺️ It was really a great help! Nali Surf Camp is located at Sabang beach right? Are we just going to go there and look for the instructors? Btw we rented a van and our rented house is in the town area.

10 Best BALER TOURIST SPOTS (History, Heritage & Surfing)

 alt=

I planned to travel to Baler a few months ago. I even booked my Airbnb for seven days, but because of unexpected circumstances, my trip didn’t push through.

After a few weeks, I got invited by the Philippines Tourism Promotions Board to be part of The Grand North Luzon Fun Caravan by PHILTOA, a seven-day trip, exploring the ten provinces in the northern Philippines . I don’t know if I’m lucky, but Baler is part of the itinerary.

Despite my canceled trip, I was still able to explore the laid-back town in the north dubbed as one of the best surfing spots in the Philippines.

Baler is also a place for culture and history enthusiasts. Many important events in our history happened in Baler, and I am lucky to be able to visit these spots with a knowledgeable tour guide explaining the significance of these places.

During the pre-colonial Spanish era, there was a community in Baler called Balid. The word Balid means copper wire, a commodity traded by Chinese visitors with the locals. The word Balid later became Baler, which is believed to be the origin of the town’s name.

Baler is famous for surfers and the beach, but the town offers a lot more. The laid-back vibe is inviting, a town that has a rich story and has played an enormous part in our history. So, join me in exploring Baler. Here are the best tourist spots in Baler. Let this be your guide when you decide to visit this town in Aurora.

1. Surf at Sabang Beach

Locals agree that the tourism boost of Baler started in Sabang, started with surfing. Baler has become a popular surfing spot in the country, as many tourists from Manila and even foreigners spend weekends in Baler. More professional surfers also visit Baler to perfect their craft.

Baler Aurora

Sabang beach is the center of tourism, where many resorts, restaurants, hostels, and hotels are lined up to cater to the growing surfing community.  Surfboard rental and instructor’s fee is around 350 pesos per hour. If you’re a surfer and want to rent a surfboard, you can do that with only 200 pesos per hour of rental.

2. Baler Church – San Luis Obispo Parish

Baler Church looks like the typical church that we usually see in the provinces, but this one played such an essential part in our history.

Baler Aurora

They call this the Siege of Baler , and it lasted for almost a year. They stayed inside the church for more than a year, until further negotiations took place and they were allowed to go back to Spain.

We were so lucky to have an excellent local tour guide to share the stories of each spot that we visited in Baler. You can also avail of this through the “historical walk” offered by the local tourism office.

3. Dona Aurora House

A few steps from the church is the Dona Aurora Aragon- Quezon House. It is a replica of the original house where the former Philippine first lady and wife of President Manuel L. Quezon grew up.

Our guide explains that the house is not the exact house, which was made mostly of nipa hut. The National Historical Commission decided to build a more sturdy house to withstand the test of time or any typhoons in the future.

Baler Aurora

Still, the importance of this house in the lives of the locals remains. It stores some of Dona Aurora Aragon’s historical and valuable items, such as book collections and photographs.

4. Balete Tree

Baler Aurora

It is said that Balete is home to the supernaturals – the engkanto , kapre , etc. This makes this tree in Aurora intriguing to every tourist.

This is also named the Millenium Tree, said to be the largest in Asia, and is almost 600 years old. Our guide said that it would take more than 50 people to encircle the entire tree while holding hands.

The tree is also a famous spot for picture taking. You’ll encounter kids here willing to take your most wacky and creative shots. Please do give them a tip for their effort and creativity.

5. Quezon Park

Our guide has a lot of interesting stories about Quezon Park, located at the center of the downtown area near the church and Dona Aurora’s house. It was named to commemorate the former President of the country – Manuel L. Quezon, who hailed from Baler.

Baler Aurora

But the most notable section is the statue of Manuel L. Quezon, just sitting, chilling on his chair. Unlike any other usual statue that stands tall and proud, Quezon’s was unassuming, replicating what would be a typical day for him in Baler.

By the time Quezon was sick of tuberculosis; he requested to be back in Baler. But that never happened, so the artist of his sculpture thought of creating something that simply shows that the former President is back in his homeland, relaxing on his patio and looking at the vast ocean.

6. Museo de Baler

Baler Aurora

Some of the most notable features of the museum are paintings and stories of Manuel Quezon as well as his wife, Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon. There is a particular part that showcases scriptures about the life of the former first lady, who was responsible for fighting for the rights of women to vote. Some clothes and artifacts are also displayed to showcase the story and culture of the indigenous people.

If you like history and enjoy learning about our culture, Museo de Baler will not disappoint.

7. Diguisit Rock Formations

If you’re looking for a stunning view of nature in the morning or during sunset, Diguisit Rock Formation is just a tricycle ride away from Sabang Beach.

Visitors can access it through Daguisit beach, and walk until reaching the rock formation. The place is an outcome of years of waves crashing into rocks creating these sculptures of nature. A walking distance by the beach is the Diguisit falls located near the highway. Anyone is free to take a dip into relaxing natural waters from the mountain.

8. Dicasalarin Cove

There are many breathtaking spots in Baler, and one of these is Dicasalarin Cove – a secluded piece of paradise just a few kilometers from town proper.

Baler Aurora

Photo by Gabriel Villena on Unsplash

The Angaras of Baler privately own this property. All visitors have to pay an entrance fee of PHP 300, a price that is worthy of the beauty that you’re about to enjoy at Dicasalarin. Creamy white beach with ocean blue waters are just some of it. On the right of the cove is the famous Baler Lighthouse, which anyone can climb and visit.

9. Ditumabo Falls

You just need to trek for less than an hour passing through forests and rivers until reaching the Ditumabo Falls or Mother Falls. Located in the neighboring town of San Luis, Ditumabo is the largest waterfall in the province, that’s why it is also called the mother falls.

Dipping into the cold waters of Ditumabo is all worthy of the trek, giving anyone that much-needed relaxation. To enjoy Ditumabo, tourists have to hire a guide for PHP 200 and an entrance fee of PHP 30 per person.

10. Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill provides stunning views of Baler Bay and Aniao Islets. It is also a place where anyone can enjoy trekking and camping activities.

But this also plays a huge part in Aurora’s history. On December 27, 1735, the entire Baler experienced a catastrophe, “Tromba Marina” or tsunami engulfed the whole town with seawater, and only a handful of families survived by taking refuge at the Ermita Hill.

Until today, the incident is remembered through the Tromba Marina Monument – a sculpture of a family climbing up the hill located at the base of the mountain.

Baler Travel Guide 2023: Things to Do, Where to Stay, Insider Tips & More!

A road trip away from Metro Manila, Baler has become a popular choice for many Pinoys looking for a break from city life. If you’re planning to travel to Baler, you’ve come to the right place. Writing from the perspective of a frequent Baler goer and of a Baler local , we’ve made sure to include in this Baler travel guide everything a traveller must know about the place.

T his article is a comprehensive Baler travel guide updated in 2022. We plan to take you through every Baler tourist spot — from must-visit sites to nearby town side trips, as well as every detail you’ll need in between.

Basic facts

  • Baler is the capital and the oldest municipality of the province of Aurora .
  • As Baler has grown into a tourist spot, the town has attracted several resorts and establishments to cater to its visitors.
  • While businesses have been growing in the municipality, Baler is still a rural area. As of 2022, Baler has no cinemas and only one small shopping mall. Many establishments close early at night, too. So, it’s not really a place for nightlife.
  • Baler is mostly known as the birthplace of former Philippine president Manuel Luis Quezon, and a few historical sites stand at the heart of the town in remembrance of him.
  • Baler is also known for surfing, so the best time to visit would be from October to March . Aside from having fewer typhoons, these months guarantee waves suitable for surfing.
  • The majority of the locals in Aurora speak Tagalog, while a few speak Ilocano. Residents of Baler are generally welcoming and helpful towards tourists.

Getting there

Manila to baler by car.

If you’re driving from Manila to Baler, expect five to six hours of driving. You’ll be going through the long and winding roads of the Sierra Madre mountain range. So, it would be safest to put the most experienced driver behind the wheel.

On your way to Baler, you have two major route options: the SCTEX–CLLEX-bound route and the Bulacan-bound route.

If you’d like to take the common route taken by travellers and most commercial buses, use the Subic–Clark–Tarlac Expressway (SCTEX) . This is usually the fastest route to Baler since you’ll be driving at around 100km per hour on the north’s major highway.

With the recent addition of the Central Luzon Link Expressway ( CLLEX) , trips to Baler are now faster than ever! Just prepare for a hefty toll fee of about ₱460, depending on your entry point. Check the updated toll fees here .

To lessen the travel distance by about 40km, take the national highway through some towns in Bulacan and Nueva Ecija . Be warned, however, that you’ll also have to navigate through some traffic in the area (usually in the morning and afternoon), or overtake a lot of 16-wheeler delivery trucks at night until dawn.

Manila to Baler by bus

At the moment, only Genesis Transport Service Inc. operates a point-to-point bus from Manila to Baler. The company runs two bus lines: the regular Genesis bus and their executive coach JoyBus . The buses take the same route, but the latter offers faster travel time with no stopover (snacks and water are provided, and there’s a lavatory inside).  They only update their JoyBus schedules which you can find here .

Genesis terminal address : 704 EDSA corner New York Street, Cubao, Quezon City, Metro Manila

In case you miss your schedule and don’t want to wait for another day, you can take buses en route to Cabanatuan City . Disembark at Cabanatuan City Central Transport Terminal . There, you can find vans and buses going to Aurora Province. Take note that not all buses and vans at that terminal are going to reach Baler. Some stop at Maria Aurora , the town right before Baler. If Maria Aurora-bounds buses are the soonest available ones during your trip, don’t worry! You can still drop off at that town and take a tricycle to Baler.

Getting around

Imagine strolling along with a coastal town with little to no cars on the road — basically, this is what getting around Baler is like. While most of the municipality is accessible by foot, tricycles are also readily available around the area. Tricycle rides start at ₱14 per person, depending on the distance travelled.

However, some far-flung tourist spots aren’t ideal to travel to via tricycle as they may cost a little too much and you’ll have a hard time hailing a ride back to the town centre. Fortunately, bike and motorcycle rentals are available around Baler.

bike rental baler travel guide 2022

Hop On Bike Rentals rents out Japanese bikes and beach cruisers. Bike rentals cost ₱ 150 for three hours, ₱ 400 for one day, and ₱ 800 for three days.

For groups travelling to Baler, van and tricycle rentals are also available. Tour guides come with an additional fee, but their services are highly recommendable for travellers keen on learning about the history and culture of Baler.

Where to stay in Baler

baler aurora tourist spot

If you ask the locals what Baler looked like a decade ago, most will probably answer that it was a lot different than how it is today. With many Baler tourist spots booming in the past years, many transient houses and hotels sprouted out of necessity. There’s a lot to choose from, but we can help you pick from some of the best Baler Aurora hotels!

Since Baler is a popular destination among weekend warriors, hostels and inns are scattered across the area. Some places of accommodation even provide hammock rooms — a perfect option for budget travellers and backpackers. Our tip? Browse through Airbnb for affordable homestay options.

costa pacifica baler travel guide 2022

Luxury hotels are also available for travellers seeking comfort and privacy. Many of these are suitable for families or leisure trips. Most resorts, like the popular Costa Pacifica and Playa Azul , sit right by the Sabang beach. These places are ideal if you’re planning to explore Baler on foot.

Costa Pacifica is your best choice if you’re looking for a place to stay where you can be near the town proper and have quick access to Sabang Beach in Baler. It’s one of the largest hotels in the province, and it offers complete amenities of two swimming pools by the beach, a buffet restaurant, and even van transfers from and to Dicasalarin Cove .

Another premier hotel in Baler, Nalu Surf Camp offers beachfront private villas. They also have in-house surfing instructors that can help you learn the basics of surfing, right in front of the hotel!

Other notable Baler hotels include Oceana Lodge (best for group travellers), Hotel Rupert A Baler (a budget-friendly option for tourists), Backdoor Villa (suitable for remote workers), and Casa Herminia (great for families).

If you’re looking for a more serene stay away from crowds, book a hotel away from the town centre. You can find some resorts in the quiet corners of Baler, specifically tucked in Reserva or Zabali . Take note that you might find a more difficult time accessing the public market or most restaurants if you book a place away from Barangay Sabang. Still, you can easily walk to less crowded parts of the beach practically anywhere you stay.

L'Sirene Boutique Resort

If you want to steer clear of the crowd, L’Sirene Boutique Resort (owned by actress Sam Pinto) is your best bet. Located in the coastal area of Brgy. Reserva, this hotel will surely give you one of the most tranquil weekend getaways of your life. You’d also basically have your own private beach in front since there are no nearby hotels on the side.

Where to eat in Baler

gagays baler travel guide 2022

There are so many things to do in Baler that you’ll surely empty your stomach at some point. Two things you must learn when going to Baler: where to go, and where to eat. Fortunately, this surf town is crawling with food hubs and local restaurants worthy of a gastronomic adventure.

As Baler has become a famous tourist destination, more and more restaurants have been sprouting in the municipality. From air-conditioned bistros to laidback food parks, Baler doesn’t sell short in offering a diverse food selection. But of course, the local pako (fern) salad still remains the ultimate crowd-favourite. In fact, it’s made its way into different recipes. Around various restaurants in Baler, you’ll find ginataang pako, ensaladang pako, and even pako pizza on the menu!

baler food

Kusina Luntian usually tops the list of every food lineup in Baler. They offer delectable grilled food served on Banana leaves. You won’t need spoons and forks here as you’ll eat with your bare hands, like a true Filipino! If you get here, consider ordering their famous pako (fiddlehead fern) salad.

Baler Tourist Spot Kingfisher

In case you fancy some steak, consider dining at The Secret Spot . There, you’ll find the Kingfisher and their roast beef and tomahawk steak. The Secret Spot is a food compound that also houses other restaurants such as Happy Huts Pizza , Mithi The Sundry & Atelier , and Yo Mama! Baler .

baler aurora tourist spot

Dogtown Collective is another spot to try when you’re at Baler. This quaint food park is home to several hippie stalls such as Halle’s Kitchen , Gagay’s , and Kai Smoothies . It’s the go-to place for people who aren’t sure what they want to eat — yet!

Baler is a coastal town, so fresh seafood is naturally abundant in the area. While it’s inevitable that most restaurants, or even carinderias , offer seafood options at a higher (tourist) rate, the market sells several varieties of fish at a relatively low price. If your accommodation has a kitchen you can use, you may try cooking your own meals instead. You’re free to head out for a picnic by the beach, just as long as you clean up after yourself!

baler aurora tourist spot

As grilled food magically tastes a lot better when eaten by the beach, expect to find a cornucopia of grilled meat and veggies along the municipality. Make sure to buy some classic island drinks to pair them with, too. Most resorts along Sabang beach offer refreshing fruit shakes and buko juice.

Top things to do in Baler

Every Baler tourist spot you have to check out, especially if it’s your first time!

1. Surf the waves at Sabang Beach

Top 10 things to do in Baler

Of course, the highlight of this surf town is its waters. Being the birthplace of Philippine surfing, Baler has attracted both foreign and local surfers of all levels because of its world-class waves. Surfers flock Baler just to feel the wind above their boards as they rock the waves’ ebb and flow. To find the most popular Baler Aurora beach, head over to the neighbourhood of Sabang .

The soft, polvoron -like sands of  Sabang Beach make it an ideal and safe Baler surfing spot. If you’d like to learn how to surf, there are many instructors waiting by the bay. These are honest, trustworthy locals who won’t fraudulently ask you for too much. Surf lessons cost only ₱350 per hour, while surfboard rentals cost ₱200 per hour.

Unlike other surf spots, almost the whole stretch of Baler’s coastline is suitable for surfing. That said, there are also areas along the two-kilometre shoreline with calmer waves perfect for dipping in more tranquil waters. If you ever find yourself hungry for some chow, there are also lots of restaurants along the beach area.

2. Climb up Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill

Back in 1735, a terrible tidal wave named Tromba Marina came to Baler and wiped out the whole town. Only a few families survived the storm as they rushed towards Ermita Hill , which is now known as the highest point in the municipality. Today, the catastrophe is remembered through a sculpture depicting the families clambering up the hill. Travellers are open to climbing up Ermita Hill, where a panoramic view of Baler Bay awaits at its peak.

baler aurora tourist spot

Don’t forget to pack your picnic hampers when going to Baler! On Ermita Hill, you can grab a quick bite at several overlooking decks. There are also pavilions surrounding the area for a quiet afternoon rest. Keep in mind that there are no restaurants there, so you’ll have to bring your own food.

3. Take a historical walk

museo de baler

Nestled in the centre of the town are landmarks that commemorate the heritage of the municipality. Museo de Baler , a two-story building that stands at Quezon Park , with an extensive artwork embossed on its bricked exterior, houses historical artefacts that are reminiscent of the Spanish colonisation period. Inside the museum, you can find exhibits and artefacts dating back from the early 1600s to recent contemporary history.

Learn about the Siege of Baler at this museum, too! Afterwards, head to the next Baler tourist spot…

Baler Tourist Spot Church

The San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish , also known as Baler Church , was first built in 1611. A tidal wave that hit Baler in 1735 destroyed it, but fortunately, locals reconstructed it immediately after. The church made its mark in history when the Spanish forces used it as a garrison during the Spanish Colonial Era.

baler aurora tourist spot

For the final stop of your historical tour, head over to the replica of Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon’s ancestral house , just in front of the Baler Church. Doña Aurora is known for her heroic acts in fighting for women’s right to vote. She also served as the first chairperson of the Philippine Red Cross. Because of her remarkable contributions to Philippine society, the province of Aurora was named after her.

4. Take a creative shot with the Baler sign

Baler sign

The Baler sign is so famous for photo-ops, there’s barely a time tourists aren’t huddled around it. Get creative with your travel buddies and strike a pose around the sign.

5. Bum on a private beach at Dicasalarin Cove

Dicasalarin Cove

A hidden treasure half an hour away from the town proper, the Dicasalarin Cove is a private and serene place for you to enjoy. Since there’s an entrance fee of ₱300, you won’t find crowds of beachgoers flocking to this area. So i f you fancy some beach bumming on white sands with pristine waters, make a beeline for this private area . Since it’s a cove, the strong waves are blocked off by the craggy mountain lining, allowing you to enjoy a breezy afternoon by the beach.

It’s not that far off the town proper, but you’d have to go across some extremely steep slopes and sharp curves on a mountain before you get there. Don’t fret, ‘cause the spectacular views on the mountain road are also well part of the trip. Also, when you get to Dicasalarin Cove, you’ll see a lighthouse nearby. If you’re up to the challenge, you can walk up to the top.

6. Reach the top of Baler Lighthouse

Baler Tourist Spot Lighthouse

Speaking of lighthouses… If you’re looking for a Baler tourist spot that has the best views, you won’t find it elsewhere than at the top of Baler Lighthouse . It’s an abandoned lighthouse-turned-tourist attraction because of its stunning coastal views. The trek to reach the lighthouse could prove to be a challenge, and we discourage you from going there during the rainy season — when the paths could get dangerously slippery.

7. Cross the Baler Hanging Bridge

baler aurora tourist spot

Prepare your mobile cameras and DSLRs for this one, folks! The Baler Hanging Bridge is a picturesque landmark that connects the barangays (neighbourhoods) of Tibang and Sabang . It’s been serving the locals for decades and has played a crucial role in their daily errands.

As you go across the bridge, gawk at the vast mountainscapes and tranquil estuary in the distance. This hanging bridge has become a very popular Baler tourist spot that some souvenirs stores have set up shop at both ends of the bridge.

8. Conquer the rock formations at Diguisit and Aniao islet

Diguisit Rock Formations

Aside from being a great Baler surfing spot, Diguisit Beach is most famous for its crystal clear waters and unique shapes of rocks. Aniao , the most famous rock formation in the area, is actually two small islands naturally moulded by the hammering waves of the Pacific. Having stood years of crashing waves, the rock formations have formed into a beautiful rugged surface visitors love taking photos with.

When the tide is low, you can head over to the rock formations and take some Insta-worthy snaps.  Depending on the season, the waters around the rock formations also serve as either a surf spot or a diving spot.

9. Go snorkelling

snorkelling in baler

Aside from surfing, there are other water sports you can try out in Baler. Snorkelling is ideal at many diving spots in Baler, especially from March to June when the ocean is calmer. You can rent diving gear from different sports resorts around town.

10. Participate in a beach cleanup

Ocean Care Movement

As a way of giving back, travellers can help keep the beaches pristine either individually or through an organised beach clean-up. Some Baler residents started an initiative, the Ocean Care Movement , to maintain the healthy and clean coasts of Baler, and visitors are more than welcome to participate.

baler balete tree

Several Filipino superstitions surround Balete trees. But more than that, it’s the olden age and massive size of Aurora’s Millennium Tree that makes it a fascination among locals and tourists alike. The tree is believed to be more than 600 years old, with a size so wide, that it would take 50 grown men to stand hand-in-hand to fully circle the trunk. The roots of the tree have also towered high enough to form caves that visitors can explore and climb up.

Aside from having multiple surfing spots, Aurora is also home to many waterfalls in its forests. One, in particular, is dubbed by the locals as The Mother Falls , as it is about 140 feet tall. A waterfall that high makes the water come down at blazing speeds. The Mother Falls is in Ditumabo, San Luis , which is a neighbouring town about a 20-minute away of drive from Baler.

Baler Tourist Spot Mother Falls

To get there, you’d have to trek through rocky paths and small streams between a lush rainforest. It’s a challenging trip, but undoubtedly fun and worthwhile!

Ditumabo Mother Falls

Although a fairly easy hike, the rocky path leading to the cold blue pool is a thrilling adventure enough — especially for those of us coming from a bustling urban jungle.

13. Wander on a road trip toward the north

baler aurora tourist spot

You can take on the roads headed further north, if you have the time. With no particular destination in mind, simply buckle up your seatbelts and let the road decide where you’ll go. On the way, you can find several picturesque destinations and many other interesting spots.

Baler Tourist Spot Ampere Beach

Consider taking a few moments to bask on the exquisite Ampere Beach . It’s a boulder beach with huge rocks and some rock formations. However, the waves are very strong here, so swimming is prohibited.

If you can’t be bothered with a Do-It-Yourself trip to Baler and would rather leave your vacation to the hands of the more experienced tour guides, there are several tour packages available for those travelling to Baler.

Baler, Aurora is a popular weekend destination because of its varied tourist attractions and proximity – 5-6 hours from Manila, or just an overnight Joy Bus away. It came to fame because of its roots as a surfing haven. The waves rolling from the Pacific Ocean will entice both beginners and experienced surfers to come to its shore. But surfing isn’t the only thing you can do in this seaside town. Here are some activities you can do during your trip.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Surf Until You Can Surf No More

baler aurora tourist spot

The main reason people travel to Baler is to surf. The waves are perfect for all skill levels. Sabang Beach is the most popular place to surf. The ideal months for surfing are from July to October when monsoon season kicks in – this is the time when the waves reach their peak height. A guided lesson with board costs around P350-P500 an hour. If you can go on your own, but don’t have a surfboard, you can rent one for P200/hour, P400 for half a day, and P800 for a full day. Bring your own board, if you don’t want to shell out cash.

Wade in a Waterfall

It’s not all about surfing in Baler. There are other natural attractions to include in your itinerary. One of which is Ditumabo Mother Falls. This waterfall is a popular destination because of its beauty and cool waters. Located in San Luis, you have the option to include it in a package tour for around P800 or go to the jump-off point on your own. Once there, it’ll take approximately an hour to reach the 140-feet high waterfall. There is an entrance fee of P30.

Ampere Beach is the perfect place to chase the sunrise. This isn’t in Baler, but in Dipaculao, but it is easily accessible by hiring a tricycle for approximately P500 round trip. The stones and rock formations scattered all over its shores create a dramatic backdrop for the break of dawn.

Go Up Ermita Hill

baler aurora tourist spot

Ermita Hill is the highest point in town and provides you with a beautiful bird’s eye view of the surroundings and the beach below. This is a possible alternative spot for watching the sunrise if you don’t want to go too far.

Learn About Baler’s History

baler aurora tourist spot

Baler isn’t just about the waves, waterfalls, and sunrises, you can also learn more about its rich history during your stay. Drop by the Aurora Quezon House, and Baler Museum to get tidbits about the region’s roots. The P35 entrance fee allows you entry to both of these historical attractions.

Marvel at Some Rock Formations

baler aurora tourist spot

Baler has a handful of beautiful beaches with a touch of rawness in them. One such place is Diguisit, this beach has islets and rocks scattered along its shore. Blue hour and sunset are the best times to spend here to take some photos. The reflection of the orange sky on the mirror-like waters and the rays of the sun falling on the rocks create a picturesque background. This destination isn’t too far from town either, just 15-20 minutes.

Check Out Another Waterfall

baler aurora tourist spot

After exploring the Diguisit islets, head over to the nearby waterfall of the same name. It may not be as big as Ditumabo but still a fun place to visit. Swim in the pool to douse the heat. For the adventurous, you can try rappelling.

Soak in More Sun and Sea

Dicasalarin Cove is a beautiful beach worth the extra expense. It has turquoise waters, powdery, beige sands, and a general gorgeous seascape. The waves can get a bit rough in these parts so be careful. There is an entrance fee that costs P300. If you’re not going to the cove on a private vehicle, you can charter a tricycle to take you for around P500.

Where to Stay

Baler’s popularity as a weekend and holiday destination has stirred the entrepreneurial spirit of the locals and investors. This means that there are several accommodations scattered all over town – from small guesthouses to luxurious resorts.

Sabang is the most ideal home base because all the other destinations can easily be accessed from here. This part of Baler has many guesthouses and resorts near the beach. You’ll also have a lot of choices when it comes to restaurants. Cheap rooms start at P500 to P1500 a night with fan or air-conditioning as well as your usual basic amenities.

Other options are in the villages of Suklayin and Cemento, but these don’t have as many choices for places to eat and sleep. Try to make reservations online and days or weeks before your trip because a lot of places are booked quickly especially during the weekends and holidays. If you haven’t booked yet, you might want to consider these top resorts in Baler as rated by Agoda users (as of January 2019).

2. dicasalarin cove.

This Baler tourist spot has a perfect view of the pacific ocean.

If you want to explore a different seaboard vibe on your Baler tourist spots tour, you can likewise visit Dicasalarin Cove . Hiring a habal-habal (rural motorcycle taxi) is ideal since the roads leading to the cove are relatively narrow.

Note, however, that the area is private property, and you need to pay an entrance fee.

When you arrive, the white sand and blue waters are quick to notice. With green hills surrounding the cove, the place is certainly worth a city escape.

Spend the day swimming in the cold waters without the crazy waves. The fine white sands and ocean breeze complements perfectly for a summer vibe.

For added fun, you can trek at a hill that leads you to a lighthouse. That rewards you with a panoramic view of the cove and the vast Pacific Ocean.

3. Baler Hanging Bridge

Walk along Baler Hanging Bridge and capture scenic photos

This hanging bridge in Baler is more than just a way to connect the locals. It has also become one of the favorite Baler tourist spots; most of its guests find it interesting to observe the meeting points of the river and the sea.

The hanging bridge connects Barangay Tibang to Barangay Sabang in Zabali Road.

Take a quick tour when you are near this place. Walking on the bridge gives you a scenic view of the mountains on the other side too.

Sometimes, you can feel the swaying of the hanging bridge, especially during windy days. But, worry not because the bridge is suspended thru high-strength cables.

Snap some dramatic photos and feel the fresh air blowing across the wooden bridge. You can buy some souvenirs at shops nearby as well.

4. Diguisit Rock Formation

Be amazed at unique rock formations at Diguisit

Diguisit Beach is one of the unique Baler tourist spots to visit. Unlike other coastlines with fine sands, this place is more like a stone and rock beach.

The exciting part is the islets or the small rock formations, especially when the tide is low.

Perfect for taking some photographs, you can visit Diguisit Beach while taking a break from surfing at Sabang Beach.

The best time to visit here is in the afternoon until sunset for a more relaxing ambiance. Food stalls are available nearby, and you can rent cottages too. Remember to wear rubber-soled slippers or sandals for your safety.

5. Diguisit Falls

You can also check out Diguisit Falls during your short trip to Diguisit Beach.

This waterfall is on the opposite side of the beach, just across the road. A short trek leads you to the basin, but the trail is rocky and could be slippery during the wet season.

The water flow remains stable most of the time, making it an ideal place to cool down from summer heat.

There are no shower rooms here, though. Thus it would be best to go back to the beach to change clothes.

6. Baler Catholic Church

The Baler Church holds historical significance to the province

Learn some history by visiting the Baler Church, also called San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Parish .

Best Things to do in Baler, Aurora

Here’s our list of things to see and do if you plan on having a Baler escapade anytime soon.

Visit the Famous Balete Tree

600-Year-Old Balete Tree in Baler

Also called the Millenium Tree, this 200-ft tall tree situated at Barangay Quirino has undoubtedly stood the test of time and has been one of Baler’s favorite tourist spots.

Locals said that it has been in its place for almost 600 plus years now. You can take pictures and shop around the vicinity.

As a matter of fact, you can ask some of the locals to take pictures of you because they know where the best angle from the tree is.

Surf at Sabang Beach

Non-stop waves begets non-stop surfing action in Baler

What better way to fully appreciate Baler than to try surf, right? The Surfing session at Sabang Beach usually costs around 300-400 pesos, including the board rental.

This beach is usually the most crowded place in Baler and is known for its long stretch of gray sandy shoreline. Before surfing, you’ll need to do the basic steps and stretching for 5 to 10 minutes, and you’re good to go.

Surf instructors will guide you for one hour, so there’s no need to worry if you’re a beginner. However, if you prefer stronger waves, you can head over to Lindy’s Point.

Chill at Baler Surfer Grill

Baler Surfer Grill, a feast for all senses

Among the many dining options in Baler, the Baler Surfer Grill is considered one of the favorites among locals and tourists.

This one is very noticeable along the long stretch in the shoreline with a Volkswagen Beetle car parked in front. This place put up the music, surfboards, and enough wooden chair for guests to add a more authentic beach vibe.

Some of the must-tries are the grilled fish, the Bulalo, and Chicken Barbecue. Give it a try!

Visit the Ditumabo Falls

Ditumabo Falls in Baler photo by Chad M

The first thing newcomers do in Baler is visit the Ditumabo Falls, a 20-minute trek from the starting point. Located at San Luis, the Ditumabo is also called the Mother Falls and the most rewarding trek one will experience.

Make sure you have all the energy to trek, as you’ll pass through stony paths, wooden bridges, and even cross rivers with fast currents (make sure you bring sandals to prevent slippers from being washed away).

Once you get there, you’ll be welcomed with the cold and refreshing waters and the cascading waterfall’s relaxing sound. A breathtaking destination in Baler.

Get Your Breakfast Fix at El Teodoro Canteen

Tapsilog by Yvette Tan via Flickr

El Teodoro Canteen is one of the best silogs in town. Usually, tourists visit the place before starting their adventure in Baler.

It serves home-cooked meals for lunch, such as pork sinigang, tuna, dinuguan, and pinakbet.

Try Gerry Shan’s Place!

Hungry surfers usually head over to Gerry Shan’s for their Chinese and Filipino-themed buffet.

Starting at 11 in the morning, people flock to the restaurant located at Quezon Street, Barangay 2, to taste their signature dishes.

It comes with a free-flowing iced tea as well. Definitely a must-visit!

Take a Detour at Dicasalarin Cove

Dicasalarin Beach

If you want to see a breathtaking view and one-of-a-kind destination in Baler, then head over to Dicasalarin Cover, owned by the Angara family.

You’ll get a sweeping view of the clear blue waters, fantastic rock formations, and hilltops atop the lighthouse.

Other must-try activity here includes snorkeling, where you’ll see the rich marine life of Baler. You can also do a picnic, but make sure to leave no trash behind.

Cross the Zabali Hanging Bridge

Hanging Bridge in Brgy. Zabali

Crossing this bridge is not for the faint of heart. However, the views atop are amazing and definitely fantastic.

The river and the mountain views are one-of-a-kind and will definitely bring anyone some peace of mind.

Remember that the wind may sway the bridge, so only bring friends who are not afraid of heights. It’s located at the endpoint of Zabali road.

Trip down Memory Lane at Museo de Baler

Museo de Baler

Know the rich history and culture of Baler and visit Museo de Baler near the Quezon Memorial Park. The two-story museum houses several photos, artifacts, paintings, sculptures, and other artworks from the Spanish, Japanese, and American occupation periods.

It is open daily from 8am to 5pm.

Visit Doña Aurora Quezon House

Dona Aurora Aragon Quezon House

Just a few walks from the Baler Church lies the Doña Aurora Quezon House, the wife of the late President Manuel Quezon, where you’ll also see the presidential car inside the compound.

The house is made of wood and nipa, which is more or like an upgrade of the famous Bahay-Kubo.

Inside the well-preserved house are memorabilia, colorful paintings displayed on the walls, furniture made with bamboo, old-style flat iron, and some old coffee table. The entrance fee is 15 pesos.

Experience Sunset at Diguisit Beach

Diguisit Rock Formations

Witness another God-given wonder when you visit Diguisit Beach, aka the Rocky Paradise.

Professional surfers usually prefer this place because waves are stronger and more challenging to surf.

Also, rock formations called Lukso-Lukso islets are picture-perfect scenery, which also deserves a visit. Try staying until sundown!

See Baler in a Different Perspective at Ermita Hill

Ermita Hill Viewpoint

Another great spot to take a great picture of Sabang Beach is heading to Ermita Hill. Aside from providing far-reaching views of the town, it is also said that this place served as a sanctuary when it was stricken by a Tsunami in 1703.

12 Awesome Things to Do in Baler, Aurora (and Around)

baler aurora tourist spot

Wedged between the Pacific Ocean and the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, Aurora Province showcases a windswept beauty that has long drawn those who want to intimately commune with nature. While surfing is the town’s main draw, the rise in tourism in recent years has seen a new wave of accommodations, restaurants, and tourism services being offered. These days, there’s more to see and do in this laid-back coastal town!

baler aurora tourist spot

Surf in Sabang & Cemento Beach

Without a doubt, surfing is the number one draw of Baler. After all, the coastal town, where ridable waves of the Pacific Ocean reach 2.7 meters in height, isn’t dubbed the Birthplace of Philippine Surfing for nothing. Locals picked up the sport in the late 1970s after the production crew of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now ( which filmed Vietnam scenes in the Philippines) left behind their surfboards.

The sandy breaks of Sabang Beach along the town center make it an excellent place to learn the sport. Located right along this stretch is Nalu Surf Camp , which offers surf lessons for PHP 350 per hour, inclusive of certified instructor and surf board rental, plus a free photo and free bottle of beer! More experienced surfers may catch the reef breaks along Cemento Beach like the one in front of Cobra Reef Resort .

Hike to Ditumabo Falls

Take a break from surfing by hiking to Ditumabo Falls , a 50-meter tall cascade plunging into a catch basin. Located in the neighboring municipality of San Luis, 30 minutes drive away from Baler town, the tourist spot is nicknamed “Mother Falls” for its grandeur. The main falls can be reached in 30 minutes, walking along a boulder-ridden river, tracing the massive pipe and concrete dike of a hydroelectric plant.

Stroll down local history

Baler is a quiet town, but its handful of heritage sites brim with dramatic history. The top sights are located within walking distance from each other, and makes for an easy DIY walking tour. Start at the San Luis Obispo de Tolosa Church (Baler Church), a modest-looking Roman Catholic church originally built with stone in 1611, and reconstructed in 1939. The original church was the site of the Siege of Baler, when the last forces of the Spanish empire quartered themselves inside the church for 11 months, long after the Philippine revolutionary government declared independence from Spanish rule. (Learn about this intriguing chapter of Philippine history by watching the 2008 Filipino film Baler or the 2016 Spanish film 1898, Los Ultimos de Filipinas .)

In front of the church is the Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon Ancestral House , which is a replica that uses the wooden posts from the original nipa house, where the wife of President Manuel Quezon was born. She was known for her humanitarian work and for being the first Chairperson of the Philippine National Red Cross. She died in an ambush by communist insurgents en route to opening a hospital in Baler. The province of Aurora was named after her. Finish your tour at Museo de Baler , a brick-walled museum housing artifacts tracing the town’s history.
