Understand [ edit ]

battlefords tourism

The name Battleford is derived from a fording area of the Battle River found at the confluence of the Battle River and the North Saskatchewan River. The English name of "Battle River" originates from indigenous languages, which was known as the "Fighting River" because it once marked the boundary between the Cree and Blackfoot Aboriginal Nations. In 1905, North Battleford came into being when the Canadian Northern Railway built a railway on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River.

North Battleford is an administrative centre and service hub for the economic, education, health and social needs of the region.

North Battleford had a permanent population of about 14,000 in 2011, but in 2018, the mayor said that the transient population would increase this to about 30,000 people. The Town of Battleford had about 4,000 people in 2011.

History [ edit ]

battlefords tourism

The Battleford area was the site of numerous independent and Hudson's Bay Company fur trading houses dating from the 1770s. William Holmes operated a post for the North West Company just above the confluence of the Battle and North Saskatchewan Rivers in 1784; at least three posts were in use between 1868 and 1914. Battleford was founded in 1875 as a fur trading post and North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) fort; its post office opened in 1877. Between 1876 and 1883, Battleford was the territorial capital of the North-West Territories (now Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nunavut, northern Quebec, northern Ontario and the Northwest Territories) before it was moved to Regina, and the NWMP fort (Fort Battleford) located there played an important role in the 1885 North-West Rebellion. It is also the terminus of the historic Swift Current-Battleford Trail.

In 1905, the construction of the Canadian Northern Railway main line to Edmonton placed the line on the north side of the North Saskatchewan River, bypassing Battleford. North Battleford was built along the railway line and was incorporated as a village in 1906, as a town in 1907, and as a city (with a population of 5,000) in 1913. Its position along the railway caused it to surpass Battleford as the major regional centre.

In 2018, Maclean's magazine ranked North Battleford as Canada's most dangerous place for overall crime. The city's mayor, however, said that this per-capita ranking was based on the town's permanent population, and that its ranking would be much lower of the crime rate were based on its total population.

City approves three-year agreement with Destination Battlefords

The City of North Battleford approved a new service agreement for funding and support for Destination Battlefords at its meeting this week.

City council authorized the agreement for a three-year term from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2025.

Council previously approved a grant of $40,000 per year for three years, and up to 25 per cent of the city’s economic development manager’s time to help Destination Battlefords. The Destination Battlefords board currently includes two representatives from each funding partner – the City of North Battleford and the Battlefords Hotels Association – and a representative at large. The agreement includes a three-year renewal with no request for additional funding at this time.

Councillors Kelli Hawtin and Kent Lindgren sit on the board for the city. The at-large representative is from Fort Battleford National Historic site.

The city confirmed that its financial contribution matches the financial contribution of the Battlefords Hotels Association.

City economic development manager Jan Swanson said the city also made an agreement with the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce to share one chamber co-op student, half-time, on a temporary basis.

“[It’s] to help us get up and get going” to rejuvenate Destination Battlefords, he said.

Hawtin said the co-op student is here to work on the initiative until September.

“She [the student] has been helping getting our advertising, social media, some of that stuff going,” she said. “We’re active, and we’re starting to get in touch with the community.”

Hawtin added Swanson has been working on looking into revising and updating some bylaws related to the new agreement and partnership, as part of his efforts.

“We are going to start to look at our strategic plan for the year, and think about what is one big thing we can work on this year,” she said. “We have talked about sports tourism: Maybe that is something that we can really impact at this point. But we are small, and we are just starting to build. I think there will be some good things happening, but we just need some time to get those building blocks in order. I think we are on the right track though.”

Following the meeting, Mayor David Gillan noted he was optimistic for the future of the organization and North Battleford tourism.

Destination Battlefords currently doesn’t have any staff and operates virtually. During the pandemic years, the non-profit was mainly inactive. But over the course of the past year and a half it has started to re-emerge and begin anew.

“Now, we’re just sort of unveiling the new change, which is our economic development manager working part-time for Destination Battlefords,” Gillan said. “But the city and the Hotels Association are still very positive about the future of event attraction and destination marketing.”

Gillan said he hopes Destination Battlefords is able to bring more event attractions into the city.

“This is all good for economic development,” he said. “It’s good for the economy. It’s good for the hotels, not just the hotels who are part of Destination Battlefords.”

Gillan added more events in the Battlefords will also help boost business, and bring more people to local restaurants and gas stations.

“Events are great, so we want to attract a lot,” he said. “[And] we have great facilities, and great hotels.”

Bater updates City, Town on Battlefords Tourism

Battlefords scene pic

Councillor Ryan Bater had to recuse himself as a councillor for the night, as he stepped into his role as executive director of Battlefords Tourism to make a presentation at City Hall Monday.

He made a presentation to the Planning Committee and later to town council in Battleford of his organization’s strategic plan and financials, in advance of the organization’s annual meeting at Alex Dillabough Centre Wednesday.

Bater spoke about the changes two years ago to create a “full-service” community marketing agency, one that would go beyond tourism marketing and include convention, event and business marketing.

It included funding agreements between the organization and the City, Town of Battleford and Battlefords Hotels Association, who introduced a one-per cent destination marketing fee.

The funding agreements initiated in March 2013 with the City and Town will expire Dec. 31 2015, which “is partly why I’m here,” said Bater. He indicated the organization hopes to renegotiate those agreements in the months ahead.

Bater made clear the organization’s expectations are realistic.

“There are no dreams of becoming the Disneyland of Canada or the Las Vegas of Canada,” said Bater. “We know that we’re a regional service centre in rural Saskatchewan. We compete with other similar sized communities here in Saskatchewan.”

The five strategic areas they wanted to identify included developing an effective branding, working with MGM Communications of Saskatoon on that initiative.

That process went on for the past year and is near its conclusion, and as it turned out that proved to be the biggest news of the night because March 30 Battlefords Tourism will officially launch the brand messaging.

“It’s one of the most in depth and comprehensive exercises I’ve ever been involved in,” Bater told North Battleford city councillors.
