Mammoth Cave - Best Day trips from Louisville, road trips from Louisville,

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

In the month of February, another great day trip from Louisville is to head down I-65 South to Mammoth Cave.

There are a few places in Kentucky that can take your breath away, and Mammoth Cave is one of them. Not only is it the world’s longest cave system – but it’s also the only internationally recognized UNESCO World Heritage site in Kentucky ! The first humans on record to have explored Mammoth Cave are from 5,000 years ago. While Mammoth Cave isn’t the only ancient human archeological finds in Kentucky, Mammoth Cave’s findings are certainly the oldest!

Best Tours at Mammoth Cave

With various ranger-led tours both above ground and in the cave – it’s a perfect day trip destination from Louisville. Since Ev is actually from the area, here is the low down on the best Mammoth Cave tours that we would spend our time doing again!

  • The Broadway Tour – This is the best tour for someone who has never been to Mammoth Cave before. You’ll want to take this guided tour for an explanation of all the best parts of the cave, like the Rotunda, Broadway Avenue, and the historic ‘Tuberculosis Huts’. Duration: 2 Hours | $18 Adults, $13 Youth, $9 Senior Pass Holder, $9 Access Pass Holder
  • Wild Cave Tour – This one is actually on our bucket list. The National Park Service even lists this tour as ‘very physically demanding’, with long periods of time getting through tight crawl spaces and difficult climbing areas. Duration: 6 Hours | $66 Adults, $33 Senior Pass Holder, $33 Access Pass Holder

Bowling Green Kentucky fun day trips from louisville - scenic drives in kentucky, drives around louisville, dat trip destinations from Louisville kentucky

Bowling Green, Kentucky

We know what you’re thinking… What is there to do in the tiny town around Western Kentucky University? For a fun, relaxing day trip from Louisville, see WKU’s campus cherry trees bloom, the Corvette Museum, Lost River Cave, and visit Amish territory. This tiny Southern slow-time town makes for a charming destination! (And we’re not biased just because Shelb’s went to school here or that Ev is from here!) Distance from Louisville – 1 hour and 45 minutes.

So what will you do on a beautiful spring day in Bowling Green, Kentucky?

  • The Corvette Museum : Normally we’re not big auto- museum folks but one of the coolest parts of the Corvette Museum is that you can see the cars that fell into ‘the sinkhole’. Doesn’t it almost sound like some sort of Biblical tragedy? The sinkhole happened in 2014 and now they’ve left parts of it open as an exhibit ! Address: 350 Corvette Dr, Bowling Green, KY 42101 Hours: 8 AM -5 PM Monday – Sunday
  • Lost River Cave : Just like it sounds – a river flowing through a cave is pretty amazing to see! You can even take underground river boat tours here . Address: 2818 Nashville Road, Bowling Green, KY 42101 Hours: Monday – Sunday (Tour times vary.)

If you haven’t gotten enough of racecars at the Corvette Museum, head over to the NCM Motorsports Park. You can drive sports cars or ride along with a professional driver on a racetrack in a sportscar! Would there be anything better than feeling the wind through your hair on a zero – humidity perfect 70-degree day in the Bluegrass? We think not.

WKU’s Cherry Tree Row

WKU’s Cherry Tree Row : It might sound silly, but every year in March, people come from all over to walk down the middle of campus and see the cherry trees bloom! ** If you’re looking forward to doing this – we highly recommend going in the afternoon when the sun sets around 6 or 7 pm.

  • Address to WKU Cherry Tree Row: 1906 College Heights Blvd. Bowling Green, KY 42101

P.S. Since March is officially when our beautiful home state wakes up, and the weather warms up. Make sure to visit Chaney’s Dairy Barn for that ice cream you’ve been waiting for all winter long!!

Kentucky horse park best day trips from louisville, day trip destinations from Louisville, scenic drives in Kentucky, fun day trips from Louisville

Lexington, Kentucky

If we were planning a day trip to our favorite neighbor city Lexington, we would spend a whole day surrounded by the prettiest parts of the countryside here in April. Not only are the cherry trees still in full bloom until around mid-April, but this is also horse country.

When you think of Kentucky and its gently rolling fields, white picket fences, and barns bigger than most people’s homes… you’re thinking of Lexington. April in Lexington really is amazing because the countryside starts to wake up, and you’ll see fields start to turn that vibrant ‘blue-grass’ color.

What’s the best way to enjoy a leisurely day trip from Louisville? Plan your visit around horses !

  • Kentucky H orse Park : More than just a place to see horses, the Kentucky Horse Park provides a campground and access to a truly immersive equine experience. Horseback riding, the International Museum of the Horse, horse shows, and ‘stall-side chats’ are all available during your stay or for the day-trippers! Address: 4089 Iron Works Pkwy, Lexington, KY 40511 Hours: Wednesday through Sunday 9 AM-5 PM
  • Keeneland Spring Meet : We’re sure you’ve heard of Churchill Downs? Home to the Kentucky Derby and the ‘fastest two minutes in history’? Keenland is the smaller and more local version of Churchill Downs. You’ll spend the afternoon playing cornhole, sipping bourbon and gingers with your friends in brightly colored clothes… it’s really and truly a perfect afternoon!! Address: 4201 Versailles Road, Lexington, Kentucky 40510 Hours: **Keeneland Spring Meet is from April 3- April 23rd.**

If you’re looking to be in nature a little away from the city, head to the Lexington Cemetery for a stroll to see the cherry trees or Raven Run Nature Sanctuary .

Bernheim Forest, Kentucky

Speaking of scenic drives in Kentucky, Bernheim Forest is one of the most serene forests near Louisville. Typically when we’re looking for a little outdoor time in Louisville, there are a ton of city parks . If we’re looking to try a few harder trails, though, Bernheim Forest is only about 40 minutes from Louisville and a perfect day trip escape.

best trails in Bernheim forest day trip from louisville Best day trips from Louisville, scenic kentucky drives, fun destinations from Louisville kentucky

There are over 40 miles of hiking trails to explore so we’re going to break down our favorite trails:

  • Elm Lick Trail – We hike this one every time we go to Bernheim because it’s so pretty! Crossing over and around multiple streams, listening to the giant bullfrog’s screech, and a few steep scurry-up-the-hill climbs, it’s far from a boring trail. There isn’t a ‘destination’ per se but it’s beautiful nonetheless. P.S. It may not sound peaceful to hear bullfrogs screech but we can assure you it’s a good laugh once you hear it! Duration: 5.0 Miles Difficulty: Hard
  • Lake Nevin Loop – This is a gravel trail so really better for walking than actual hiking – but it’s so pretty! You’ll be walking around a lake which would be perfect after a harder trail like Elm Lick Trail. Duration: 1.5 miles Difficulty: Easy
  • Millennium Trail – Millenium trail will probably require its own day trip from Louisville to complete. You’re also required to register at the Visitor Center before starting this trail so that the forest service can keep track of who’s hiking in and out on this trail. (For your safety!) Duration: 13.75 miles Difficulty: Hard

Even if you’re not a big hiker, there is plenty of space to stretch out for a picnic; visit the forest learning center and Bernheim’s Edible Garden & Research Building. Don’t forget to snag a picture with the forest giant sculptures from our Kentucky Spring Bucket List !

Spring Mill Park in Indiana is another scenic destination for a day trip from Louisville

Spring Mill State Park, Indiana

Heading out of state, Spring Mill State Park in Indiana is another scenic destination for a day trip from Louisville. Spring Mill State Park is a preserved Pioneer Village from the early 1800s. You can take a boat tour of the Twin Caves, walk the pioneer village to see the grist, sawmill, and 20 other preserved buildings, or hike the preserve. If you decide to extend your stay – make sure you try out staying at the Spring Mill Inn !

The weird & wonderful part of this park is that it’s also home to the Gus Grissom Memorial Museum , honoring Gus Grissom, a local NASA astronaut? So after you’ve gotten your fill of the black from the past – head over to the museum and get a little futuristic!

The trustees table shaker village kentucky day trip from louisville Best day trips from Louisville, scenic kentucky drives, fun destinations from Louisville kentucky

Shaker Village, kentucky

Heading back into Kentucky for another preserved village day trip from Louisville is Shaker Village. Home to waterfalls, an incredible farm-to-table restaurant, and the largest collection of 19th century preserved buildings in the US – it’s sort of picture-perfect . Being an hour and ten minutes from Louisville means it’s also attainable picture perfection!

Here’s how to have the perfect summer day at Shaker Village: hike or bike the trails, eat, and listen to live music. Sans cell phone if you can help it!

  • Live Music at The Meeting House – Free admission on the lawn near the Trustees’ Office Restaurant , with drinks and specialty cocktails available. They even have fire pits for those late chilly spring evenings! Fridays and Saturdays @ 6:30

Whenever we’re visiting these historic villages, the best part about them is how quiet they are. Chances are if you’re looking to escape for the day, it’s because you need to let your mind flow and relax. There really is no better place than some of these historic towns. The water, the landscaping, and the plush picnic-worthy grass.. take our word for it!

Holiday World & Splashin Safari, Indiana

As a kid, Shelbs went to Holiday World a ton with her family. Our family isn’t a huge fan of theme parks, but this is one park we’d go back to all the time! Holiday World is the best kind of day trip because you can totally escape. You don’t have to worry about a thing, and in our experience, your day is so much more pleasant than Disneyland, etc. With the well-maintained, super safe rides and the cleanest water park we’ve ever been to – it’s enjoyable even for adults!!

Our favorite water rides were always the Mammoth Water Coaster , the Zinga , and the Wildebeest Water Coaster over in the Splashin’ Safari. As for the park’s non-swimming side, we always loved the Hallowswings and the Thunderbird Steel Roller Coaster .

**Tip: If you’re just in the mood to relax – you can hit up the wave pool over in Splashin’ Safari!

Perks of spending the say at Hoiday World:

  • It’s the cleanest theme park we’ve ever been to! Employees are constantly cleaning even pre-Covid.
  • Non-alcoholic beverages and sunscreen are free all day long.
  • Theme park and waterpark all in one.

Clifty Falls - best Road Trips from Louisville day trip from louisville Best day trips from Louisville, scenic kentucky drives, fun destinations from Louisville kentucky

Clifty Falls, Indiana

Clifty Falls is the perfect day trip from Louisville if you’re looking to spend the day outdoors in September .

It’s hot but not miserable during this time of year, so where you’re sure to get wet along the trails will be more fun! Usually, by this time of year, the water will have warmed up, and you’ll have an easier time in the water crossings.

If you’re the competitive type – you can also participate in the Four Falls Challenge of Clifty Falls State Park ! The competition is simple: you pick up your map from the Nature Center and take photos of 7 specific waypoints along your hike. The hike should take you 2-3 hours along the old railroad tracks, a 600-foot-long tunnel, and 4 different waterfalls!

Best Trails at Clifty Falls State Park

  • Clifty Falls, Hoffman Falls, Tunnel Falls Loop Trail – You’ll see three separate falls and cross over the different trails on the official Clifty Falls map. Duration: 5.4 miles
  • Tunnel Falls to Lily Memorial – This one has really steep stairs but pretty! (Good for those of us wanting a workout!) Duration: 1.5 miles
  • Hoffman Falls Loop – Good views and shorter than the other hikes if you’re pressed for time! Duration: 0.8 miles

*The trails at Clifty Falls don’t have names marked on the map – they have numbers. In other places, we’ve found the names, though!

Get Your Clifty Falls Map Here!

Joe Huber's Family Farm Restaurant - day trip from louisville Best day trips from Louisville, scenic kentucky drives, fun destinations from Louisville kentucky

Huber’s Orchard & Winery- Indiana

We can’t tell you how many October’s we’ve spent cruising through the countryside to this hidden gem tucked away in Indiana. Huber’s is the picture-perfect day trip from Louisville that we all need! And we mean need… every year .

If you’re in the area, Huber’s is best for soaking in all things fall-fun in this region of the country. Imagine picking your pumpkins, eating pumpkin ice cream, and sipping on delicious blackberry wine from the winery? All while a cool breeze from the Appalachian mountains rolls across your favorite fuzzy sweater as you sip your wine.. you can practically feel the stress melting off of your body, right?

  • Tours & Tasting Experiences – Loved doing a tasting and even took our giant German Shepherd inside while doing it! Granted, he just laid at our feet the whole time, but it was amazing! We are also excited to do the Starlight Winery’s entire tour, including seeing their still room. Something about a copper still makes us Kentuckians feel at home!
  • Apple Picking – The most Instagrammable and actually fun activity in the fall! Perfect for girls’ groups or date days! Highly recommend going home and baking an apple pie when you’re done. The market offers their homemade ice cream for sale. Literally drooling at the thought of apple pie and ice cream as we write this!
  • Pumpkin Picking – You’ll definitely ride a tractor and get covered in hay from the haybale seats – so don’t try to go crazy with your outfit . Just have fun with your day!

For us city slickers..

As Louisvillians, many of us are used to city life and don’t know what ‘country life’ feels like. That slower pace of life, where tractors drive down the road, and you get to go 20 miles an hour for a few miles? You will not realize how fast-paced your life has been until you’re starting at a tractor butt for 20 minutes. This kind of reflective break comes free of charge when you visit Huber’s!! And we say that with love because we could all probably use a little more of that!!

Address: 19816 Huber Rd, Borden, IN 47106 Hours: Monday through Saturday 10 AM to 6 PM

Boone Tavern Berea Kentucky day trips from louisville Best day trips from Louisville, scenic kentucky drives, fun destinations from Louisville kentucky

Berea, Kentucky

One of the prettiest areas within 2 hours of Louisville is Berea, Kentucky. Not only is the drive to Berea scenic, but some of the prettiest hikes in Kentucky are in Berea .

There really is so much to see and do in the mountains in the Eastern portion of Kentucky. You have Red River Gorge, Cumberland Gap, Big South Fork, Daniel Boone National Forest – all apart of the Appalachian Mountain Range. The Appalachian mountains are stunning, but to really explore them the way they deserve to be explored – you’ll need to break them up into bite-sized pieces.

Berea is always a good introduction to mountain life because it sits on the edge of the Daniel Boone National Forest, in what we call ‘the Foothills.’ The foothills of any mountain range are basically the mountains’ baby portions before you drive deeper into the taller, windier sections of the mountain range.

Best Hikes in Berea

  • East and West Pinnacles of Berea – Sweeping, unforgettable views!! You’ll actually also get to see Indian Fort Lookout and Eagle’s Nest. All 4 are equally beautiful. **Please take water no matter what time of year! We saw people attempting this without bringing water, and that seemed semi-crazy! Duration: 6.6 miles Difficulty: moderate
  • Indian Fort Lookout – This is basically the hike to do if you want to see views and be done within two hours. You won’t get to see all of the pinnacles, but the views will be worth the hike still! Duration: 2.0 miles Difficulty: moderate
  • Anglin Falls – This is a harder hike but well worth the efforts! When you get to the falls, you’re rewarded with one of the most picturesque fairy tale scenes we’ve ever seen in Kentucky. Duration: 1.7 miles Difficulty: moderate

When you head to Berea in mid-October to early November – you’ll hit prime leaf-peeping time as well as some of the best views close to Louisville! If you decide to stay a little longer and need a place to stay – try staying at the historic Boone Tavern ! It’s so beautiful and perfectly embodies the spirit of this artsy mountain town.

This is a great road trip idea for history lovers – Abe Lincoln’s hometown of Springfield, Illinois! You can spend an entire weekend exploring where Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature, worked as a self-taught lawyer, and lived with his family. You can tour the only home he ever owned which is beautifully preserved along with the neighborhood where he lived. Lincoln is also buried in the local cemetery beneath a massive tomb. You can also enjoy some Route 66 history and tour the state’s capitol building as well as the Governor’s mansion.

12. Holland, MI

best road trips from louisville

If you thought Holland was in Europe – you are correct!  But, America’s Holland is located in Michigan and it’s a cool town worth exploring.  Pick up a pair of wooden shoes and walk along the streets of downtown for great shopping and lots of dining options.  (Fun fact:  the streets of downtown Holland are heated so they don’t have to plow snow in the winter. Genius!)  Holland is also home to the only authentic Dutch wind mill that is still operational in the U.S.  If tulips are your thing – visit during the annual  festival  each spring.  The Holland Bowl Mill is also very cool – ask them for a quick tour of the production and find a one of a kind wooden bowl to take home!

13. Cincinnati, OH

weekend trips from Louisville

Cincinnati is one of the easier road trips from Louisville! The beautiful Cincinnati Museum Center, once a train terminal, now houses museums and special exhibits.  One of my favorite museums in the entire country is located in Cincinnati – The American Sign Museum. Consider taking one of the many  guided tours  that will showcase the local beer scene, or historical spots around town.  The downtown riverfront park has recently undergone renovations and is a great place to ride a bike or take a walk.

Bill’s Advice:  If you only have time to do one thing in Cincinnati, go and visit the American Sign Museum.  It’s so cool!  I included it in my first book –  100 Things To Do In America Before You Die .  You’ll thank me for the suggestion!

14. Fort Wayne, IN

Fort Wayne is probably not a spot that’s been on your radar but Indiana’s second largest city has a lot going on.  Its minor league baseball stadium is award winning and its local library is known as the best genealogy research center in the country.  The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is one of the best designed kid-friendly zoos around and a brand new, beautiful  riverfront project  has injected new energy into the town.  You’ll also find lots of opportunity for outdoor recreation.

Bill’s Advice:  For something unique, visit the headquarters for Sweetwater – one of the largest music and instrument stores in the world.  Vera Bradley is also headquartered in Fort Wayne and has events during the year.

15. Columbus, OH

best road trips from louisville

Columbus is one of the easier road trips from Louisville. Known to locals as “C-Bus” and the capital city of Ohio. It’s been going through major growth over the last decade and is a destination worthy of a road trip. The sprawling downtown is easily accessible with the new CBUS Circulator, free to use for visitors. Check out the Short North Arts District for galleries, dining, and locally owned shopping. Local attractions include the Franklin Conservatory and Botanical Garden, the COSI Science Museum, Columbus Art Museum, and the Columbus Zoo which is one of the best in the country. Be sure to take a free tour of the Ohio state capitol building as well!

16. Pittsburgh, PA

best road trips from louisville

Famous for having more bridges than any other U.S. city, Pittsburgh is a terrific destination for a weekend or extended getaway. You can take in a baseball game with beautiful views of the Sixth Street Bridge, take a ride on the historic Duquesne Incline, or visit the city’s quirky bicycle museum. If you grew up watching Mr. Rogers, Pittsburgh was his home town and you can spend a day exploring all things Mr. Rogers – including seeing the very sets from the iconic television show and his puppets! This is one of the really fun road trips from Louisville!

Check out my story:  Finding Mr. Rogers in Pittsburgh .

17. Huntsville, AL

best road trips from louisville

Huntsville is best known as home to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. This is the place where kids from all over the country have come to take part in “Space Camp” over the years. It’s a wonderful museum dedicated to the space program and definitely worth a stop. While you’re visiting Huntsville, be sure to check out their beautiful Botanical Garden, maintained almost exclusively by volunteers. If you’re into camping, you can check out the peaceful surroundings at Monte Sano State Park. There are a lot of great restaurants

18. Babcock State Park (Clifftop, WV)

weekend trips from louisville

If you’re looking for one of the best low-key adventure road trips from Louisville – consider the great outdoors! This is an amazing state park in West Virginia. Check out my article on visiting  Babcock State Park  – where you can rent a small cabin and have a front row seat to beautiful scenery, hiking trails, and other outdoor recreation. The old mill and waterfall in the park is awesome for pictures and you never know what kind of wildlife you’ll get to see!

19. Maumee Bay, OH

Kentucky’s most vibrant city,  Louisville has a lot going for it. On top of a great dining and drinking scene, fun arts events and picturesque neighborhoods, the city lies within easy reach of a diverse range of attractions. Snaking caverns, world-renowned thoroughbred horse farms and some of the best distilleries in America are all less than two hours’ drive from the River City.

If you've come down for the Derby and want to see more of Kentucky, the following day trips are ideal for travelers interested in exploring rural and urban landscapes. The state's sun-dappled bluegrass pastures make a fine counterpoint to historic downtowns dotted with whiskey bars and eclectic eateries. You’ll also find plenty of surprises, from a tiny city famed for modernist architecture to a Tibetan monastery on the edge of a vibrant college town.

Wherever you head from Louisville, you’ll need a car – public transportation is unfortunately quite limited here. Once you've sorted out your wheels, aim them at these five top day trips from Louisville.

Columbus, Indiana

Why Go: To admire an astonishing collection of 20th-century architecture

Even many Indiana locals are unaware of the great architectural treasure trove in the southern part of the state. From the middle of the 20th century, the town of Columbus, Indiana, became a veritable drawing board for some of the world’s greatest living architects. More than 60 buildings here were designed by famous names, including Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier, IM Pei, Cesar Pelli, Harry Weese and Deborah Berke among many others.

The American Institute of Architects has ranked Columbus the sixth-best city in the nation for its outstanding array of architecture – not bad for a city with a population of just 50,000. Don’t miss the First Christian Church, designed by Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen (father of Eero Saarinen) in 1942; the brick-and-limestone structure is a Modernist masterpiece.

There’s also some impressive public art on display, with works by the likes of Henry Moore, Robert Indiana and Dale Chihuly. Download the free '' Columbus, IN Tours " app on your smartphone and you can explore the great art and architecture at your leisure. You can also arrange tours and pick up maps at the Columbus visitors center .

If you need a break, stop in at Zaharakos , a beautifully restored, 1900s-era ice cream parlor with a mahogany counter, stained glass windows and Tiffany-style lamps, as well as outstanding homemade ice cream and classic American fare.

How to get to Columbus from Louisville: If you’re driving, it’s a straight shot up I-65 from Louisville to Columbus; allow about 75 minutes for the 70-mile drive. For a dose of nature along the way, stop in at Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge . You can walk one of five trails while keeping an eye out for the 290 bird species that pass through each year, including greater sandhill cranes in winter.

Horses grazing at a horse-farm near Lexington, Kentucky

Lexington, Kentucky

Why go: To visit leafy neighborhoods and thoroughbred farms in America's horse capital

Set in the heart of Kentucky's Bluegrass country, Lexington often outscores its bigger neighbor to the north when it comes to desirability for both visitors and residents. The state’s second-largest city regularly makes the top 30 in annual round-ups of the best places to live in the USA (this is something you might want to keep to yourself when you’re back in Louisville, as the two towns are long-time rivals).

Historic homes, inviting parks and a wide assortment of family-friendly attractions make Lexington well worth your time for a day trip, or even an overnight stay. This equine-obsessed town is often called "the horse capital of the world" for the thoroughbred farms just outside of town. You can learn all about Lexington’s beloved racehorses (or even go for a ride) on a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park . Alternatively, catch turf racing at Keeneland or see harness racing at the Red Mile racetrack .

Beyond horses, there’s much to do in Lexington, from visiting the grand mansion and manicured gardens at the Ashland Estate to sipping your way through the town’s notable distilleries and microbreweries. You can check out the city's liquid largesse on the whimsically named Brewgrass Trail .

How to get to Lexington from Louisville: Allow about 90 minutes for the 80-mile drive east from Louisville on I-64. Along the way, you can stop in Frankfort, the state’s charming capital on the banks of the Kentucky River. Take a bite at Frank’s White Light Diner , which serves up hearty Cajun cooking near the Singing Bridge.

A huge passageway in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Why go: To see a glittering subterranean landscape in the world’s largest cave system

Covering more than 400 miles of underground passageways, Mammoth Cave National Park staggers the imagination. Strolling through these cool, silent passageways, you’ll see natural wonders formed over millions of years, from waterfall-like columns to shimmering stalactites adorning vast cathedral-like chambers.

National park guides run a wide variety of guided trips throughout the year. The four-hour Grand Avenue tour takes you through slot canyons, gypsum-lined tunnels and up steep hills – a journey that showcases the caves’ geological diversity. You can also learn about centuries of human influence in the cave on a historic tour, or see the caverns lit up by lantern on the Violet City tour. Be sure to book well ahead, as tours can fill up weeks in advance.

How to get to Mammoth Cave National Park from Louisville: The 88-mile drive from Louisville to the caves takes about 90 minutes. It's worth spending the night for a bit of uninterrupted stargazing – in 2021, Mammoth Cave was named an international dark sky park . You can stay overnight at the Lodge at Mammoth Caves (run by the park service) in pleasant wooden cottages surrounded by greenery.

Barrels of bourbon whiskey in a rick house (storage barn) at Heaven Hill Distillery, Bardstown

Bardstown, Kentucky

Why go: To taste Kentucky’s finest bourbon at historic distilleries

One of the oldest settlements in Kentucky, Bardstown is a charming small town with Georgian red-brick architecture and a walkable center that invites you to explore. You can check out eye-catching locally owned shops and tempting food stops such as Hadorn’s , a third-generation family bakery famed for its cinnamon rolls and donuts.

Snacking and window shopping are fine preludes to the main event here – namely delving into the lore of bourbon whiskey. Bardstown calls itself "the bourbon capital of the world" and it’s hard to dispute that claim given the town’s staggering number of distilleries and bourbon bars. You can learn about the spirit’s past on a visit to the Oscar Getz Museum of Whiskey History , then go for tours and tastings at iconic distilleries such as Barton 1792 , Heaven Hill or Willett .

How to get to Bardstown from Louisville: It takes about an hour to cover the 44 miles between Louisville and Bardstown. If your focus is just on bourbon, you can book an excursion from Louisville with Mint Julep Tours , which visits three bourbon distilleries (they also offer custom tours).

A teaching by the Dalai Lama at the Tibetan Mongolian Cultural Center, Bloomington, Indiana

Bloomington, Indiana

Why go: To see Indiana at its most eclectic

One of the loveliest college campuses in America lies amidst the rolling hills of south central Indiana. Spread across 1900 acres, Indiana University is an inviting expanse of grassy lawns, woodlands and creeks, with historic limestone buildings sprouting among the greenery. After strolling the grounds, you can spend the day taking in some impressive culture, from modernist masterpieces tucked inside the IM Pei–designed Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art to the rare manuscripts in the Lilly Library .

Sprawling around the university, Bloomington is one of Indiana’s most culturally dynamic small towns. You can find outstanding ethnic fare at places such as Samira , a much-loved Afghani restaurant, or hear up-and-coming local bands at The Bluebird . Southeast of the center, take time to stroll the peaceful grounds of the Tibetan Mongolian Buddhist Cultural Center , founded by Thubten Jigme Norbu, the late brother of the Dalai Lama, back in 1979.

How to get to Bloomington from Louisville: Bloomington is a two-hour drive northwest of Louisville. Set out early so you can stop in at Brown County State Park along the way; 18 miles of hiking trails loop through Indiana’s largest state park, offering some fabulous views across to the hill-covered horizon.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Lovingly referred to as the "Bourbon Capital of the World," Bardstown Kentucky, at 40 miles and one hour from Louisville is a great spot for a day trip from Louisville. If you love bourbon, you'll want to check out the Kentucky Bourbon Festival in September, or Bardstown's Four Roses Distillery, Heaven Hill Distilleries Bourbon Heritage Center, Historic Tom Moore Distillery, Jim Beam American Outpost, and Maker's Mark Distillery year round. If you're not into bourbon or just want to do something other than tour distilleries, check out the Abbey of Gethsemani, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest, and the Kentucky Railway Museum.

Mammoth Cave (Cave City)

 James St. John/CC BY 2.0/Flickr

Mammoth Cave , located in Cave City at just under 100 miles and an hour and a half from Downtown Louisville, is a wonderful Kentucky attraction. Visitors to Cave City can take several different trips through Mammoth Cave, they can swim, camp, fish, and boat in Barren River State Resort Park, and they can go horseback riding, explore museums, and go golfing. There is enough to do in Cave City to fill a weekend, so it's lucky for us here in Louisville that Cave City is such a short drive away. You'll definitely want to go back.

NOTE: Mammoth Cave is on Central time, which is one hour behind Louisville time.

French Lick, Indiana

 LouisvilleUSACE/CC BY 2.0/Flickr

French Lick was always a big attraction for Louisville residents because of Patoka Lake and the natural hot springs found in the area, but it is even more so now that French Lick sports a casino and world-class resort. French Lick is approximately 58 miles and one hour and 15 minutes from Downtown Louisville. Additionally, both Holiday World and Spring Mill are just a short drive from French Lick. While you're there, you'll want to check out the resort and casino, Big Splash Adventure Indoor Water Park , and the horse stables.

Cincinnati, Ohio

At just under 100 miles and an hour and a half from Louisville, Cincinnati is a great day trip destination. The top attractions for Louisvillians in and around Cincinnati  are Paramount's Kings Island and the Cincinnati Zoo. Another great attraction just outside of Cincinnati is the Newport Aquarium that puts Ripley's Aquarium in Gatlinburg to shame. Other popular Cincinnati attractions include the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, the Krohn Conservatory, and the River Downs Racetrack.

Brown County, Indiana

 Steven Raymer/Getty Images

Brown County is close to 90 miles and an hour and a half from Louisville. If you love to shop for arts and crafts, Brown County will be your paradise. Brown County's biggest attraction is its shopping square with hundreds of stores selling handmade gifts. There are also numerous wineries, Indiana's largest state park, and a smaller replica of Tennessee's Grand Ole Opry . If you're craving Gatlinburg but don't have the time for the five-hour drive, a day trip to Brown County may quell your craving for a while.

Lexington, Kentucky

 Jerry Dohnal/Getty Images

As the home of the University of Kentucky and its status as one of Kentucky's biggest cities, Lexington is sometimes seen as Louisville's rival. However, Lexington is a gorgeous city that's worth a visit, regardless of how much you dislike anything affiliated with the UK. At 80 miles and approximately an hour and fifteen minutes from Downtown Louisville, a trip to Lexington is a great way to escape the city for a while. While you're there, check out Kentucky Horse Park, Keeneland Race Course, and Shaker Village, or visit one of Lexington's major distilleries: Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, and Wild Turkey.

Holiday World

Holiday World is typically less crowded than the other nearby theme parks and the drive there isn't bad at all. Holiday World is just over 70 miles and one hour and fifteen minutes from Downtown Louisville. Some of the theme park's most popular features are Pilgrim's Plunge (the world's tallest water ride), one of the most popular wooden roller coasters in the world, and Splashin' Safari, Holiday World's gigantic water park.

Frankfort, Kentucky

 by Jonathan D. Goforth/Getty Images

At about 50 miles and one hour from Louisville, Frankfort is a great day trip to make if you're interested in Kentucky government and history. Frankfort is Kentucky's state capital and the site of many state historic buildings, such as the old governor's mansion, the Frank Lloyd Wright-Zigler House, and the liberty hall historic site. Additionally, Frankfort is home to the Buffalo Trace distillery, Daniel Boone's grave, and the Kentucky Vietnam Veteran's Memorial, among other interesting historic state attractions.

Spring Mill State Park, Indiana

bnpositive/CC BY-SA 2.0/Flickr

Spring Mill isn't really all that far away from Louisville in distance (only 64 miles), but it takes about an hour and a half to get there because you have to take Indiana highways through a lot of small towns all the way there. However, Spring Mill is definitely worth the trip. At Spring Mill you can take a guided boat tour of the Twin Caves, you can hike, you can swim in the park's huge pool, and you can camp. There's also an inn if you decide to stay overnight.

Corydon, Indiana

 StevenW./CC BY-SA 2.0/Flickr

Corydon is a small town approximately 30 miles west of Louisville that is best known for being Indiana's first state capital . Corydon's Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the town square is filled with buildings that tell the story of Indiana's past. Additionally, there are several quaint craft and specialty shops there where you can find unique treasures for all of your family and friends. If you go, make sure you take a walk through the town square to see all of the historic buildings and landmarks.

15 Best Day Trips from Louisville

Louisville, although not actually the state capital of Kentucky, is still the largest city in the state, known for its annual Kentucky Derby horse race and as the home and headquarters of Kentucky Fried Chicken.

There’s a lot of American history to see in the city, but outside of the urban area, in the surrounding state, there is even more to experience and there are plenty of day trip opportunities available.

Kentucky is home to some of the largest caves in the world, and there are many places where it’s possible to head underground to explore the gloom and see incredible stalactite formations.

If you’d rather learn more about the famous fried chicken, it’s easy to visit the first ever KFC restaurant, where Colonel Sanders created his secret recipes.

History buffs can visit the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln near Louisville, where America’s most famous president was born and raised.

1. Frankfort

Capitol Building in Frankfort, Kentucky

Frankfort is a small city in comparison to the sprawling metropolis of Louisville, but it is in fact the State Capital of Kentucky.

It’s one of the most historic cities in the state: namely, one of the original European settlements in the area.

To garner an understanding of Kentucky in general, it’s a great day trip to undertake from Louisville.

There are museums to visit where you can learn about this intriguing history, and plenty of grand, historic government buildings to see.

It’s also right in the middle of bourbon country, and whisky lovers will find there are a lot of distilleries to tour around.

2. Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historical Park

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historical Park

The Abraham Lincoln Birthplace Historical Park is a nationally famous heritage area south of Louisville that comprises two important homesteads where Abraham Lincoln was born and raised.

Sinking Spring Farm is where Abraham Lincoln was actually born; here there is an interesting visitor’s center and a grand memorial building constructed to classical designs.

It’s a far cry from the small cabin where he was actually born, but this was torn down long ago.

There is a replica, which may or may not have been built with some of the original logs.

Knob Creek Farm, also in the park, is where Abraham Lincoln grew up after moving there when he was only two years old.

Here sits another log cabin, again a replica of the original, but it’s an historic site that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Louisville.

3. Bardstown

Willett Distillery, Bardstown

Bardstown is the second oldest settlement in Kentucky and should be included in any itinerary when planning historical day trips from Louisville.

Its real claim to fame is as the Bourbon Capital of the World.

This is where bourbon was refined into the world renowned drink it is today, and there are annual festivals here celebrating all things bourbon.

Jim Beam, possibly one of the most famous international brands, originated near Bardstown.

They have a distillery in the area and there are many museums dedicated solely to the history of this tipple.

4. Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum

Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum

South of Louisville, in the small town of Corbin, there is one real attraction to see: the Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum.

For fried chicken lovers, Corbin is worth the journey to see the site where Harland Sanders, otherwise known as Colonel Sanders, started the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in the 1940’s.

Although now a museum, it is also still a functioning KFC restaurant, where diners can eat their meals in the same location where it all began.

This is where the Colonel himself first concocted the famous secret recipe of herbs and spices that KFC is known for; giving his fried chicken a distinctive taste that has now spread across most of the world.

It’s a piece of culinary history to be savored not far from Louisville.

5. Petersburg

USS Sachem Wreck

Petersburg is a small, unassuming town of just a few hundred people on the Ohio River, where Kentucky ends and Indiana and Ohio begin.

Petersburg has two bizarre claims to fame: the first is the abandoned wreck of the USS Sachem, which met an unlikely end along the river here.

This shipwreck is a ghostly place to visit, and is being slowly reclaimed by nature in the wilderness along the river.

It was abandoned after being used by the Navy and then being turned into a river cruise liner.

The second unique attraction in Petersburg is the Creation Museum, which claims that the earth is only 6000 years old, as per the stories from the bible.

It’s a little controversial for some people, but here you can see dinosaur skeletons and dioramas depicting humans and dinosaurs living alongside one another, a remarkable state of affairs.

6. Tri State Peak

Cumberland Gap

In the far corner of Kentucky, the Tri State Peak is the location where three states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia, all merge and meet.

Found within the boundaries of the Cumberland Gap National Park, there is a visitor’s center at the base of the peak which provides historic information on the definition of these state boundaries.

The walk to the peak is only about one mile long and well worth the effort to be able to stand and look out over three different states of the US all at once.

7. Cumberland Falls

Cumberland Falls

The Cumberland Falls are a truly epic sight to behold, found south east of Louisville.

Part of the extensive Cumberland River, this waterfall only ever reaches around twenty meters in height at any point, but its length is the really impressive feature; it’s known as Little Niagara for its dramatic appearance.

It’s also one of the only places in the world where, at the right time, with a full moon and misty conditions, a bizarre and mystifying moon-bow will form.

This is a night-time rainbow, and it’s an enchanting and unusual natural phenomenon.

8. Red River Gorge

Courthouse Rock at Red River Gorge, Kentucky

The Red River Gorge is a huge area of canyon surrounded by pristine forest, which can be found east of Louisville.

Unique because of the huge number of naturally occurring limestone arches that have been hollowed out over millennia along the length of the canyon, it’s a spectacular sight to witness.

It’s also an area of outstanding natural beauty; perfect for outdoor lovers wanting to rock climb, kayak, canoe and hike through the untouched woodland.

9. Land Between The Lakes

Land Between The Lakes

The Land Between The Lakes is a beautiful area that, as the name suggests, lies between two lakes.

This is the border of Kentucky and Tennessee, and parts of this protected area lie in both states.

It’s a beautiful area for outdoor recreation; with water sports aplenty on the tranquil lakes and hiking a favorite activity amongst visitors.

10. Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave National Park

Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world.

Totaling a current known length of 412 miles of twisting, underground tunnels and caverns, there’s probably much more waiting to be discovered underground.

The cave system can be visited on many tours, varying in length from just an hour to a whole day.

Some areas are lit and others have to be navigated by torch light.

There is something for everyone, no matter how deep you dare to delve into Mammoth Cave.

11. Mammoth Onyx Cave

Mammoth Onyx Cave

Also located within Mammoth Cave National Park, the Mammoth Onyx Cave is known to be one of the most accessible caves in the world, and one of the most beautiful.

It’s perfect for people of all ages, no matter how young or old, with its wide and gentle slope creating easy access.

Along the short walk are stalactites, stalagmites, and many more unusual underground features.

12. Cave City

Cave City, Kentucky

Near to the Mammoth Cave National Park, Cave City is the heart of cave country, and a destination in its own right.

The small city is known for its historical Wig Wam Village Motel, where visitors can see recreations of traditional Native American Wig Wams and even stay overnight if they wish.

It’s also where Dinosaur World is found: a real life Jurassic Park where huge models of prehistoric creatures are on display in an open air setting.

13. Bowling Green

Bowling Green, Kentucky

Bowling Green is the third largest city in Kentucky and is known for its long history of relationship with the motor industry.

This is where you can visit the General Motors manufacturing plant and the Corvette Museum.

It’s also where you can see the bewildering sight of the Corvette Sinkhole.

At the museum, a Sinkhole randomly opened up and swallowed eight of the cars on display.

Now, it’s been turned into a surreal exhibition.

14. Lexington

Lexington, Kentucky

Lexington is the second largest city in Kentucky and its long history has always been entwined with horses and horse racing.

Here you can visit famous horse racing stables and grounds.

During your visit you will also experience the other side of Lexington: a modern American University City that has successfully turned around the decline of its industrial trades with growing craft scenes; where abandoned warehouses have been taken over by new whisky distilleries and craft beer breweries that offer a distinctive and unique flavor to visitors.

15. Cincinnati

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati is not just an escape from Louisville, but an escape from the state of Kentucky entirely.

It’s northeast across the border in neighboring Ohio, but just an hour and half of driving away.

A historical city on the beautiful banks of the Ohio River, it has a 19th century city center full of distinctive architecture and an ever growing tourist scene – all just a day trip away from Louisville.

15 Best Day Trips from Louisville:

  • Harland Sanders Cafe and Museum
  • Tri State Peak

8 Attractions Worth Road Tripping To Within 2 Hours Of Louisville

The Buffalo Trace Distillery | Photo courtesy of Buffalo Trace

As much as we love the many attractions that Louisville has to offer, we’ve gotta admit: the rest of our state (and Southern Indiana!) has plenty of great places to visit, too. If you’re down for a day trip, check out some of our favorite attractions outside of the city.

Lexington, Kentucky: The Burl

A socially-distanced outdoor show at The Burl in Lexington.

Frankfort, Kentucky: West Sixth Farm

Versailles, Kentucky: Kentucky Castle

La Grange, Kentucky: Sauerbeck Family Drive-In

If you’ve never been to the Sauerbeck, it’s a simple setup: you pay for a ticket in advance, give the ticket agent your name at the drive-up window, drive to an available spot (or a specific spot as directed), then tune your car radio to the frequency posted on nearby signs. A building on-site has concessions for purchase, plus indoor restrooms.

Though they’re usually associated with the 50s, drive-ins aren’t a relic of the past –– they’re a perfect destination for 2021.

Bardstown, Kentucky: My Old Kentucky Dinner Train

Mammoth Cave, Kentucky: Mammoth Cave

You can choose from 10 different cave tour options depending on your interests and mobility level; there are accessible tours for people with disabilities, a “Domes and Dripstones” tour for geology fans and strenuous lantern-lit climbs for thrillseekers.

Adult tour ticket prices vary widely from $6 to $66, so check out their website to find the best tour for you. If you’d rather stay above ground, entrance to the state park itself is free; you can canoe, hike, fish, kayak, go horseback riding and take photos of scenic overlooks. Fall is one of the best times of year to visit Mammoth Cave, speaking from personal experience, so do what you can to experience the area when it’s at its most beautiful.

Santa Claus, Indiana: Holiday World & Splashin’ Safari

Frankfort, Kentucky: Buffalo Trace Distillery Tours

Speaking of spirits: the pandemic has put a few of their tours on hold, but make sure to check out the Ghost Tour once it’s available again. The distillery, whose hauntings are real enough to have been featured on the tv show  “Ghost Hunters,” offers free tours to those brave enough to walk where ghosts allegedly roam.

I'm a video editor and freelance writer who enjoys watching people wearing University of Louisville uniforms excel at sports, scaling the faces of large rocks, and hanging out with my border collie/laborador/cattle dog mutt thingy that I have.

Best road trips from Chicago

St Louis, MO

1.  St Louis, MO

Driving time from Chicago:  Four and a half hours

While beer, blues and BBQ are likely on the top of your St Louis bucket list (and rightfuly so), there's a lot more to discover in the Gateway to the West—like custard from Ted Drewes and a walk around Forest Park. There's also a ton to see on the five-hour drive from Chicago: Stop off in Springfield to see attractions like the Illinois State Capitol, or in Atlanta, IL to take a photo with Paul Bunyon holding a massive hotdog.

Eau Claire, WI

2.  Eau Claire, WI

Driving time from Chicago:  Five hours

Folks head to the Chippewa Valley in northern Wisconsin for its rolling hills and colorful foliage (plus plenty of beer and cheese to smuggle back to Chicago), but there are some worthy sights along the road as well. Snap a selfie with Pinkie the Elephant in DeForest, WI and sample cranberry-flavored everything at the Wisconsin Cranberry Discovery Center   in Warrens, WI. Once you're in Eau Claire, trade in the car for a kayak:  Riverside Bike & Skate   in downtown Eau Claire rents canoes and kayaks and has shuttles that will drive you upstream so you can hit the Chippewa River.

Traverse City, MI

3.  Traverse City, MI

The charming resort town of Traverse City, located at Michigan’s northern tip, offers plenty to do for nature enthusiasts. Clinch Park and Bryant Park have gorgeous, popular beaches while the more remote Haserot and North Bar Lake beaches offer the chance for a secluded getaway. You’re also within a stones throw of the coastal M-22, one of the most scenic drives in America, as well photo-ops at the Grand Traverse and Little Sable lighthouses.

Detroit, MI

4.  Detroit, MI

Driving time from Chicago:  Four and a half hours

Despite what Blackhawks fans may chant, there is plenty about Detroit that doesn’t suck. You could easily spend a day or two on art alone, thanks to world-class museums like the Detroit Institute of Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit ; powerful, immersive public art like the Heidelberg Project and colorful, whimsical folk art like Hamtramck Disneyland . Enjoy a leisurely morning browsing at Eastern Market showcasing dozens of artisan food producers, makers and crafters, and then check out the tempting restaurant and bar options nearby. On the way home, stop in neighboring Dearborn, home to the largest and most diverse Arab community in the U.S., for delicious food at spots like Al-Ameer , Sheeba and Shatila Bakery .

Driving time from Chicago : Three hours

At the top of many Chicagoans city escape must-visit list is Galena, Illinois. This charming town just under three hours from the city is known for its history, 19th-century architecture and resorts. During the third weekend of June, tourists and locals alike gather for the annual  Great Galena Balloon Race .

Door County, WI

6.  Door County, WI

The road trip doesn't end when you reach Door County; There's plenty to navigate by car as you wander the series of small towns located on a beautiful 75-mile peninsula surrounded by Lake Michigan and Green Bay. Madison, WI

8.  Madison, WI

Driving time from Chicago: Three hours

Sure the Midwest loves its college towns, but Madison's proximity to five surrounding lakes make it one of the more of the scenic ones. The abundance of waterways make kayaking, rafting and canoeing especially popular—you can book them directly through Madison Boats . For those averse to using their sea legs, there's the 16-acre Olbrich Botanical Gardens for all ages or the National Mustard Museum (yes, you read that correctly). It wouldn't be a trip to Wisconsin without trying blocks and blocks of cheese, so make sure to stop by the "Capital of Cheese" known as Fromagination in downtown Madison.

Cincinnati, OH

9.  Cincinnati, OH

If Skyline Chili is not your bag, don’t worry—there’s a whole lot more to the Queen City than its most famous tourist foodstuff. Cincy has been undergoing a major glow-up over the past decade or so, from the ever-evolving Smale Riverfront Park, which offers lots to do and gorgeous views of the skyline and the Ohio River to the revitalization of the historic Over-the-Rhine neighborhood. There, you'll find a number of must-visit spots, including the popular Rhinegeist Brewery, the vibrant Findlay Market , the stunning Music Hall and Washington Park , which sports a sweet playground and community events throughout the year. Plus, the Cincinnati Zoo is one of the best in the country, and the only place you can see Internet icon Fiona the Hippo in person. That in itself is worth the trip.

Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, IL

10.  Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, IL

Driving time from Chicago:  Six hours

Not going to make it to Napa this year? Opt for the just-as-beautiful Shawnee Hills Wine Trail instead. The 3 5-mile scenic drive meanders through Shawnee National Forest in southern Illinois and features over 10  award-winning wineries in cute towns like Cobden, Alto Pass, and Pomona. If you need more than wine to prompt a trip, there's plenty of nature in the vicinity and the nearby town of Murphysboro is home to some of the finest BBQ in the Midwest at 17th Street Barbecue .

Bloomington, IN

11.  Bloomington, IN

Driving time from Chicago:  Four hours

This cozy college town offers some big-city amenities, but it's the surrounding hills, forests and lakes that make it special. A short itinerary could look like: Hike the Deam Wilderness trails ; s ee the Morgan-Monroe State Forest wildflowers; admire the Cedar Bluffs Nature Preserve limestone bluffs; g o fishing at the reservoir lakes. Just don't forget to leave room for a meal at  Feast Market & Cellar , a family-owned kitchen with a lovely corner porch where everything is made from scratch daily.

Saugatuck, MI

12.  Saugatuck, MI

Driving time from Chicago:  Two and a half hours

This dreamy lakeside town (and next-door neighbor Douglas) has long been a favorite of Chicagoans looking to spend time on the water, whether it’s a boat on the Kalamazoo River or a relaxing day on one of the area’s six clean, inviting beaches. From hiking the Saugatuck Dunes to window shopping on Butler Street to enjoying dinner and drinks alfresco, there are many ways to get some much-needed fresh air here. It’s also one of the Midwest’s best queer-friendly vacation destinations, home to more than 100 LGBTQ-owned and friendly businesses.

Ann Arbor, MI

13.  Ann Arbor, MI

Driving time from Chicago:  Four hours

If you'd rather stick to less-crowded cities, skip Detroit and opt for Ann Arbor instead. Foodies and beer nerds will love this low-key vacation spot for its plethora of good restaurants and breweries. Home to the renowned University of Michigan, this city’s quaint downtown is full of unique shops, spots to eat and so much more (make sure Blank Slate Creamery is on your list).

Toledo, OH

14.  Toledo, OH

The road from Chicago to Ohio is filled with worthwhile attractions, including Indiana Dunes State Park and the Hall of Heroes Super Hero Museum in Elkhart, Indiana. Once you arrive in Toledo, you'll be greeted with picturesque churches, wild urban parks, a trendy jazz culture and plenty of microbreweries to keep you busy. Just outside the city you'll also find fall-harvest overload in the way of apple and pumpkin farms where you can pick your own fruits and veggies and gorge on baked treats.

Shipshewana, IN

15.  Shipshewana, IN

Driving time from Chicago:  Two hours

OK, just hear us out. The heart of Indiana Amish country is a great option for a convenient road trip perfect for families, history buffs and, most of all, antiquers. The Shipshewana Trading Place Flea Market is a bargain-hunter’s dream—the largest flea market in the Midwest, with lively auctions Wednesday mornings. After a morning of browsing and bargaining, you’ll work up an appetite for some Amish home cooking, which you can even sample in a  literal Amish home . For outdoorsy types, nearby Mongo offers canoe and kayak rentals for a relaxing day on the water.

Des Moines, IA

16.  Des Moines, IA

Driving time from Chicago: Five hours

There's a surprising amount to explore over a weekend in Des Moines, from more than 20 breweries in the metro area to the six-mile Art Route , which showcases 87 public art pieces from sculptures to murals. But what really makes Des Moines worth visiting are its summer events, like the eclectic 80/35 music festival, and, of course, the festive juggernaut that is the Iowa State Fair , where you can get 69 different food-on-a-stick creations (nice). When you're heading back on I-80, don't miss the World's Largest Truck Stop in Walcott, truly a site to behold.

Columbus, IN

17.  Columbus, IN

Driving time from Chicago : Three and a half hours

In the heart of Southern Indiana, Columbus is an unexpected center for boundary-pushing architecture—in fact, the American Institute of Architects ranked the city sixth in the nation for architectural innovation. Roughly 70 different constructions sprinkled around the city and county make this city an architectural wonder. Take an  Architectural Highlights Tour  of more than 30 of Columbus' structures and learn how this city became the state's award-winning arts and design destination. Make another pit stop of striking constructions with a stroll through Mill Race Park , an 85-acre riverfront park near the city's center. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, stop by  Columbus Bar , the oldest bar and restaurant in town.

5 awesome road trips you can take from Nashville

Benét J. Wilson

Editor's note: Please check with every facility when planning your trip. Some may have limited hours or even be closed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit, my kid and I decided to drive from Baltimore to San Antonio to shelter with our family. On the way, we spent the night in Nashville at the Kimpton Aertson . I've spent many work-related trips in Music City, which has become a hot spot for bachelorette parties, sporting events and even New Year's Eve celebrations.

But as nice as Nashville is, you may be feeling a little stir crazy as the pandemic drags on. Thanks to its central location, locals and visitors can reach a variety of destinations north, south, east and west of Nashville that are great for road trips. If you're in Music City, consider making at least one of these five trips.

Louisville, Kentucky

best road trips from louisville

Distance from Nashville : 2 hours and 30 minutes

Louisville is far more than the Kentucky Derby and bourbon. Named after King Louis XVI, the city was founded by George Rogers Clark in 1778. It's where the cheeseburger was invented and Kentucky fried chicken was born. Right now, the city is selling custom face masks to benefit the Louisville COVID Relief Fund and The Black Artists Fund .

What to do : Louisville has the Urban Bourbon Experience™ , the world's only city-wide trail filled with award-winning micro-distilleries, exhibits and craft cocktail destinations. You can also visit Churchill Downs , home of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Derby Museum. Baseball fans will want to make the pilgrimage to the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory and get a custom bat. The multicultural Muhammad Ali Center is an award-winning museum dedicated to the life and legacy of the beloved championship boxer, who hailed from Louisville. You can even have locals create a custom list of things to do while in Louisville.

Where to stay : If you can't afford to stay at The Brown Hotel -- the historic property where the Hot Brown sandwich was invented -- at least have a cocktail in its famous Lobby Bar. Families may enjoy staying at the Homewood Suites by Hilton Louisville Downtown , with its indoor pool, free breakfast and full kitchens. For those on a budget, consider the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Louisville Downtown .

What to eat and drink : Despite being known for mint juleps, Louisville is where the classic cocktail, the Old Fashioned, was invented in 1881. During the first two weeks of June, the city even celebrates Old Fashioned Fortnight with bourbon events, cocktail specials and National Bourbon Day on June 14. Feast BBQ is the place to go to get your fix of delights including pulled pork and brisket. Local favorite Jack Fry's is known for its shrimp and grits, and you can't leave Louisville without trying Kern's Derby-Pie® , best described as a chocolate-pecan pie. Because it's trademarked, most local restaurants serve their version of it, usually called Chocolate Pecan Pie or some variation thereof. Try the one served at Homemade Ice Cream and Pie Kitchen.

Kentucky Bourbon Trail

best road trips from louisville

Distance from Nashville : Start your drive in Louisville, which is roughly 2 hours and 30 minutes away.

This famous trail highlights where some of the world's best bourbons are distilled. It comprises 18 distilleries, including Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, Angel's Envy and Bulleit. You can even memorialize your drive on the trail with a passport that you can either pick up at the Kentucky Bourbon Trail Welcome Center at the Frazier Museum in Louisville, at your first distillery stop, or download it online and print it in advance. There are plenty of distilleries in Louisville, so that may be the best place to start. And if you need help planning your trip, the Kentucky Bourbon Train website is there to help.

What to do : Drive south to Shepherdsville to check out the Jim Beam American Stillhouse . An hour away is the Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto. After spending the night in Loretto, take a quick 45-minute drive to the Wilderness Trail Distillery in Danville. Then, drive north to Wild Turkey Bourbon in Lawrenceburg and also visit the Woodford Reserve distillery in Versailles. Finish with a final swing to Shelbyville to see the Bulleit Distilling Co.

Where to stay : If you want to stay in full bourbon mode, consider a stay at Bourbon Manor in Bardstown, the first bourbon-themed bed and breakfast in the U.S., featuring a bourbon-themed breakfast and a spa. After visiting Woodford Reserve, book a room at the Holiday Inn Express and Suites Lexington W - Versailles . And the Country Inn and Suites by Radisson in Shelbyville is a solid option after your tour of the Bulleit distillery.

What to eat and drink : If I'm going to be sampling adult beverages out on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, I may as well eat at the distilleries. Have lunch at Star Hill Provisions, located at Maker's Mark Distillery, which serves bourbon cocktails and premium, farm-to-table fare without the pretense. The Jim Beam stillhouse is home to Fred's Smokehouse , which features dishes such as Devil's Cut™ pulled pork barbecue sandwiches and chocolate bourbon pie topped with Graeter's Jim Beam Bourbon ice cream. And Woodford Reserve's chef-in-residence served bourbon-flavored food including barrelhead brie, turkey brined in bourbon and Kentucky butter cake.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

best road trips from louisville

Distance from Nashville : 3 hours, 15 minutes

The park , nestled between North Carolina and Tennessee, was founded in June 1934. Six years later, it was formally dedicated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Each state transferred deeds for 300,000 acres to the federal government to create the park. Start your trip by going to either the Sugarlands Visitor Center, in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, or the Oconaluftee Visitor Center in Cherokee, North Carolina, to get the latest information on attractions.

What to do : You'll never be bored here, since the park is home to auto tours, walking and cycling trails, camping, fishing, waterfalls, horseback riding, scenic overlooks, Park Service Ranger-led programs and historic areas to explore. A pandemic-friendly activity is to do a car tour of the park's 384 miles of road, including the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail . Take a hike on the Rainbow Falls Trail or go fishing in one of the park's 2,900 miles of streams, including one of the last wild trout habitats in the eastern U.S.

Where to stay : The only on-site hotel in the park is the Le Conte Lodge . Located on the crest of Mount Le Conte, it can only be reached by hiking. If you want to stay, advance reservations are required. To reach the backcountry campsites , you'll need to hike several miles. If your heart is set on staying in the park but you're not quite up for a hike, you also have your choice of three other campsites:

  • Frontcountry : RV and tent camping in a developed campground that has restrooms.
  • Group Campgrounds : Large front-country campsites suitable for groups of eight people or more.
  • Horse Camps : Small campgrounds, accessible by vehicle, that offer hitch racks for horses and primitive camping facilities.

If camping or hiking to a hotel isn't your thing, there are plenty of hotels, cabins and bed and breakfasts in the area. Consider the Mountain Laurel Chalet Rental s in Gatlinburg, the Black Fox Lodge Tapestry Collection by Hilton in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee or the Quality Inn and Suites in Robbinsville, North Carolina.

What to eat and drink : There aren't many places to eat inside Great Smoky Mountains National Park . The Cades Cove Campground Store has a snack bar that serves breakfast items, hot and cold sandwiches and wraps, soups and chili, pizza, soft-serve ice cream, fountain drinks and other items. After that, you're relegated to scavenging at vending machines. The Old Mill Restaurant , which serves massive portions of Southern comfort food, is a popular eatery in Pigeon Forge. And Gatlinburg's The Peddler Steakhouse gives you a great steak and a nice view of the Little Pigeon River.

Asheville, North Carolina

best road trips from louisville

Distance from Nashville : 4 hours and over 30 minutes

With its eclectic mix of lovingly preserved architecture (including Art Deco, Beaux-Arts and Neoclassical), downtown center with locally owned shops and art galleries, a hot restaurant scene and lively entertainment spots, Asheville is a vibrant city nestled unassumingly in the Appalachian Mountains. It boasts more breweries per capita than any other U.S. city, and there's also plenty to do for visitors who love the great outdoors.

What to do : No trip to Asheville would be complete without a visit to the Biltmore Estate , George Vanderbilt's 250-room (35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces) French Renaissance castle. Tap your inner artist and check out Roberto Vengoechea's Visions of Creation Gallery , where you can take a one-day workshop to make your own custom silver ring. Drive along the 469-mile scenic Blue Ridge Parkway , known as "America's favorite drive," and the gateway to outdoor adventure in Asheville, including hiking, biking, birdwatching, fishing and tubing down the French Broad River.

Where to stay : After visiting the Biltmore Estate, why not stay at the Village Hotel on Biltmore Estate ? It features hotel rooms and more family-friendly studios and suites with a living room and two bathrooms. If you're more of a downtown person, book a room at the AC Hotel Asheville Downtown , which is within walking distance of all the city's hot spots. Or enjoy the hospitality at the Hill House Bed and Breakfast , which serves guests coffee from Javataza, fresh fruit juices, and eggs, cream, breads and cheeses.

What to eat and drink : For great barbecue washed down with a local brew, you'll want to have a meal at 12 Bones Smokehouse . If you're a fan of farm-to-table fare, The Blackbird's menu features the bounty of local farmers, fresh seafood from the Carolina coast, local microbrews, craft cocktails and American wines. For more upscale dining, enjoy gourmet cuisine — including harissa-spiced rack of lamb, pumpkin spice and rye-crusted salmon and cold water lobster and spaghetti — at t he Biltmore Estate's The Dining Room .

Little Rock, Arkansas

best road trips from louisville

Distance from Nashville : Just over 5 hours

This capital city, which is on the banks of the Arkansas River, is in Pulaski County, the largest in the state. In the heart of Little Rock is the popular River Market District , home to the city's best restaurants, shops, bars, nightlife, museums and hotels. Outdoor enthusiasts also have plenty to do, with city parks offering running and walking trails, bike paths, fishing, private and public golf courses, sports facilities and picnic areas.

What to do : You must visit the Clinton Presidential Center and Park , home to the Clinton Foundation, the Clinton Presidential Library and Museum and the Clinton School of Public Service. Want to see some historic sites? Check out the Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site , where nine African American students made history in 1957 as they integrated the schools. Take the kids to the Little Rock Zoo to see the animals and experience the restored historic Spillman Engineering Over the Jumps Carousel. For some outdoor time, visit Pinnacle Mountain State Park , west of Little Rock. There are great views of the city, plus you can enjoy nature trails and even take a hike.

Where to stay : Book a room at The Empress of Little Rock , an award-winning bed and breakfast built in 1888. Amenities include a majestic double stairwell, candlelit breakfasts, hydrotherapy massage jet showers and distinctly decorated guest rooms and suites, all with private bathrooms. The Burgundy Hotel, a Tapestry Collection property by Hilton , is Little Rock's first boutique property, offering double and king studio suites, two-room double and king suites, king whirlpool suites and board room suites. For travelers who prefer camping, there's the Maumelle Recreation Area and Campground , about 20 minutes outside Little Rock. The park is on Lake Maumelle and the Arkansas River and has reservable and walk-in campsites with water and electricity, picnic shelters, playgrounds, showers, flush toilets, a dump station and a boat ramp.

What to eat and drink : Locals swear by Big Orange , known for its craft burgers (white truffle and pecorino, anyone?), amazing salads (such as the Border Town Wedge) and whimsical milkshakes (I'll take a dulce de leche, please). If you want to go more upscale, then Cache Restaurant , in the center of downtown Little Rock, is the place. It's known for using locally sourced vegetables and meats to create three- and nine-course meals, along with vegetarian options. Beer lovers will love the city's microbrew scene, including Stone's Throw Brewing , Lost Forty Brewing and Diamond Bear Brewing . All three serve the pub food you'd expect at a brewery.

Just Askin': How many traffic lights are in Louisville and how many miles of highways?

best road trips from louisville

Could you count all the traffic signals and highway signs you pass during your daily trips? The task is nearly impossible.

Here are some Louisville traffic facts you probably did not know. And while we can't promise this will make you feel better about your morning commute, you'll have something to say if you ever need to make small talk.

Question: How many miles of interstate are there in Louisville?

Short answer: It's a lot.

Long answer: From a birds-eye view, the Louisville metro area has a sprawling road infrastructure, shaped by five interstate highways and other thoroughfares extending into neighboring counties.

We estimated the total using Google Maps. With all the curves and zig-zags, it's a little tricky to determine the length of a highway in Jefferson County.

For interstates 64, 65 and 71, I measured their lengths using straight-line distance. Here's what I gathered:

  • Interstate 64 is around 23 miles long.
  • Interstate 65 is about 13 miles long.
  • Interstate 71 is about 11 miles long.

We reached out to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in an attempt to get an official total, but the department could only provide the distances for all of Kentucky, not just Jefferson County. In case you were wondering, I-64 spans 185.2 miles in the Bluegrass State, longer than I-65 (137.32 miles) and I-71 (97.42 miles), according to the Federal Highway Administration.

Luckily, the Federal Highway Administration also recorded measurements for the Kentucky sections of interstates 264 and 265. Here are those totals, rounded to the nearest hundredth of a mile (note that in Kentucky, both highways are exclusively in Jefferson County):

  • Interstate 264 is 22.93 miles long
  • Interstate 265 is 24.48 miles long

Question: How many stoplights are there in Louisville?

Answer: There are 1,005 traffic signals in the city, according to Metro Public Works . If you are also wondering about those flashing yellow lights often seen in school zones, there are 260 of those in Louisville.
