Review: India's Brahmaputra River Cruise

Cruise India's Brahmaputra River

Last month I had the pleasure of joining Assam Bengal Navigation’s newest river ship Charaidew II on a voyage along northern India’s Brahmaputra River. India is a destination I’ve wanted to experience for many years, so when the opportunity arose to join my good friend Gianna on this seven-night cruise I jumped at the chance.

The Itinerary

The Assam region is located in the northernmost part of India, close to the foothills of the Himalaya. The Brahmaputra River is the region’s main waterway, flowing through Tibet, into India and down through Bangladesh to the Bay of Bengal. The river itself is ever-changing, meaning that the ship’s charts are constantly being updated from voyage to voyage. As the river conditions are so variable it is generally only safe to cruise during the daylight hours, with the ship safely anchored overnight.

Our itinerary was the 7-night ‘River Island’ program, cruising the Brahmaputra between Steemer Ghat and Jorhat. The cruise itinerary takes in the highest navigable reaches of the river and showcases the unique culture of the area, fusing Indian and S.E. Asian influences. Highlights include a visit to Sivasagar, the old capital of the Ahom kings, as well as to Majuli Island with its unique Hindu monastic communities famous for their dance drama.

Brahmaputra River cruise map

The major drawcard for Gianna and I was the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Kaziranga National Park, as we were keen to see and photograph as much wildlife as possible. We had our hearts set on catching a glimpse of a Royal Bengal Tiger (the park has also earned the distinction of having the highest density of these beauties), but alas on this occasion we weren’t fortunate enough to spot one. Our cruise director told us they had seen a Bengal Tiger patrolling the riverbank on the previous trip, but as is the case with wild animals you do have to be a little lucky on occasion. Not to worry however, as the park is blessed with a variety of wildlife including the world’s largest population of the Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros and the Indian Wild Water Buffalo. The park also supports large populations of Indian elephants, Indian bison, Barasingha (swamp deer), and Capped Langur along with myriad birdlife including the Oriental Honey Buzzard, Black-shouldered Kite, White-tailed Eagle and Himalayan Griffon.

We visited Kaziranga on two occasions during the voyage, the first time we ventured ashore in the park included a wildlife-spotting tour on the back of an elephant, a new experience for me.

Kaziranga NP elephant tour

When we weren’t in Kaziranga we were stopping at the traditional villages that line the river bank. We particularly enjoyed these villages as they were so untouched by tourism; it was interesting watching the locals go about their everyday business as we strolled through the villages, whether they be praying in the town’s temple or sitting at a traditional handloom weaving colourful fabrics. Of course they don’t get many westerners up in this part of the world, so everyone we met was keen to have a selfie with us and the people were so warm and friendly. The village visits were a definite highlight for us, and typically we had a couple of hours to explore and interact with the locals each time we went ashore.

Weaving brahmaputra river cruise

On each occasion when we returned from an excursion to the ship we were met by the crew bearing cold towels and refreshing beverages and we particularly enjoyed the crew’s attention to the small details such as these.

The itinerary is quite gentle in terms of physicality, anybody with a reasonable level of mobility will be able to enjoy it without too many problems. Most of the activities were scheduled for the morning, with the afternoon put aside to cruise to the next day’s location. While cruising aboard the ship there were activities to take part in, including the opportunity to dress in colourful saris (a lot of fun) and an interesting cooking class with the ship’s chef where he taught us about spices and preparing traditional Indian curries. We were also lucky enough to enjoy a performance by local Assam dancers on the first night of the cruise, and music from a renowned Buddhist flutist later in the trip.

Indiai cruise

A note about transfers to the ship…

To join the cruise we flew from Delhi into the city of Guwahati. We were met on arrival at the airport by the ship’s local representatives (driver and guide) for an included private car transfer to the Charaidew II. The car was modern and well-maintained and we enjoyed the four-hour ride through the countryside, which included an impromptu stop for lunch at a roadside restaurant offering some of the best Indian cuisine we enjoyed during our travels.

At the conclusion of the cruise we were flying out from the city of Dibrugarh and again a private transfer was provided. En route our attention was drawn to some amazing prayer calls emanating from a temple and the driver and guide were only too happy for us to drop in for a quick visit.

The transfers were very well organised and we felt very safe in the hands of our skilled driver (the roads in India can be quite an experience!).

Village India Brahmaputra River Cruise

The Ship:  Charaidew II

Assam Bengal Navigation operate a small fleet of river ships in India on both the Brahmaputra and Ganges rivers. We were lucky enough to cruise aboard the brand-new Charaidew II which they had launched just eight weeks prior in mid-January 2019.

At 44 metres in length, the Charaidew II provides extremely comfortable accommodation for up to 36 travellers sharing 18 cabins and approximately 30 crew. We were travelling during the ‘off-peak’ time of year, so the ship wasn’t full, but we did note that there was plenty of public space so we don’t think the ship would ever feel too crowded, even with a full complement aboard.

Charaidew II lounge

The ship’s decor reflects traditional Assamese design, with touches of colonial elegance, brought to life by hand-woven cotton fabrics. The lower deck houses the comfortable dining room, with the bulk of the cabins located on the mid deck. On the top deck you find the lounge and sun deck, both pleasant locations to sit back with a good book or to take in views of the river. There’s plenty of comfy chairs to make yourself at home, and a bar to purchase a refreshing drink (tea/coffee and water/fruit juices are included at no additional cost). In the lounge you also have access to complimentary WiFi, which allowed us to stay in touch with friends and family at home and share some of our photographs each day.

Charaidew II dining room

There’s also a small gym on board, along with a spa offering massages and beauty treatments (additional cost).

Being brand-new, the ship is in excellent condition and the crew did a great job ensuring she was looking at her absolute best each day.

The Cabin:  Double Cabin

The Charaidew II offers three grades of accommodation; there are two highly sought-after Deluxe Cabins (32 square metres) with private balconies, 12 Double / Twin Cabins (22 square metres) and four standard Cabins (16 square metres) that are also available to solo travellers.

Gianna and I shared a Twin-bedded cabin on the mid deck. We were very impressed by the generous size of the accommodations and enjoyed the fact that the French Balcony allowed plenty of fresh air in while an insect screen kept the bugs at bay. The cabin featured individually-controlled air conditioning, comfortable beds (you may choose either a double bed or two singles), a writing desk with chair, plenty of hanging space and an electronic safe. There were also in-cabin tea and coffee making facilities and a small bar fridge.

Charaidew II cabin

The cabin’s en suite was also very well designed, with a full-size shower (there was never a shortage of hot water), toilet, basin and hairdryer. Complimentary Biotique toiletries were provided and replenished during the daily servicing of the room.

We were particularly looking forward to sampling some local cuisine during the cruise, and we enjoyed the menu the chefs in the galley were able to produce. As the ship’s guests originate from all around the world the menu offers a combination of western and Indian dishes and we did find that the spice had perhaps been ‘toned down’ a little to suit most palates. We recommend a gentle word to the chef if you would prefer a more spicy offering, they are sure to oblige.

Breakfast and lunch were served as buffets in the dining room, with a typical array of bacon, sausages, and eggs (cooked to order) on offer. There was also a variety of fruits, yoghurts and cereals for those keen on a lighter start to the day. Tea and coffee and fruit juice are also on offer throughout the day. If you prefer an espresso-style coffee (rather than typical filter coffee) there is a barista in the lounge but do note that these premium coffees come at an additional cost on board.

dining aboard Charaidew II

Lunch was again a buffet, featuring a mix of both western and Indian dishes. At lunch each day you also make your dinner selection for that evening’s meal choosing from a small a la carte menu. Dinner typically consisted of four courses, a soup, entrée, main and dessert. On one occasion we enjoyed a bonfire BBQ ashore for the evening meal which was a highlight.

If you like to indulge in a glass of wine with your evening meal there is a small selection available on board for purchase. While the wine list is not expansive, we did find that the choices on offer were more than adequate and reasonably priced.

Our Verdict

For the uninitiated, India can be an assault on the senses; the constant movement, noises, smells, colours and crowds in cities like Delhi and Varanasi can take a bit of getting used to. In comparison, the pace of life on the river can be very genteel and our time exploring the Brahmaputra River aboard the new Charaidew II allowed us the opportunity to experience a completely different – and unexpected - side to this amazing country.

Rarely visited by the tourist masses, the Assam region is full of friendly people and interesting discoveries and we suggest there is no better way to experience this part of the world than on a 7-night cruise aboard Assam Bengal Navigation’s new Charaidew II.

So if India’s on your bucket list, make sure you add the Brahmaputra River to your itinerary – you wont regret it!

In photos: straight cruisin’ through Assam

Photos of Assam, India from a two-week river cruise on the Brahmaputra with , the first Indian river cruise company.

Well, this isn’t what I expected from my luxury river cruise in India.

A carpet of shockingly yellow mustard flowers spreads before me, punctuated by a pair of skinny legs touching the sky in a cheeky handstand. The tang of fresh coriander from the next field over tickles my nose. Cackles of curious children clicking the camera at my hip should make me nervous—I’m here on a photography assignment, and a broken camera is not an option—but all I can do is laugh and remind them not to leave fingerprints on the lens.

Skills that kills!

This little Bangladeshi village of Khirakanta, on one of the thousands of islands amongst the Brahmaputra River, seems simple and insignificant. But looks can be deceiving; our Assamese guide, Mohan, tells us these fields supply most of the vegetables for Guwahati, Assam’s capital city.

Mohan leads us ‘round piles of purple aubergines, through rows of bamboo houses. Curious looks and smiles run rampant as locals gather to watch.

Contrary to other villages in more touristic parts of India, there are no begging hands, no pleas for pens . We troop through backyards and courtyards, yet no one is particularly bothered by strange foreigners wandering through their homes; if anything, they’re amused.

Coming to see what all the fuss is about

Before boarding our painted “country boat” to return to the main cruise boat, a girl in blue comes forward and gifts me a bag of freshly picked vegetables with a shy smile. I can’t identify half of the different varieties, but I grin with thanks, and climb aboard the boat with a wave of goodbye. The gaggle of children trailing behind us wave with gusto as the little blue boat sails off across the Brahmaputra river.

The “country boat”

So long, farewell!

The walk was no opulent Raj-era outing, nor something you’d find on someone’s Great Indian Bucket List; just a simple stroll through one of the many riverside villages of Assam. But these kinds of simple pleasures and surprises are what made my cruise with Assam Bengal Navigation truly memorable.

Prior to the assignment, I expected a pleasant if uneventful cruise down the Brahmaputra river, playing photographer at bucket list sights I’d already seen. Assam was not new territory—I spent several months in Assam and the northeast earlier this year—but cruising with Assam Bengal Navigation was a chance to see Assam from a whole new perspective.

From inside and out!

Misty mornings greeted our strolls through remote villages I’d never be able to reach on my own. Whispers of cows sifting through rice straws and the clickety clack of women weaving on wooden looms served as our strolling soundtrack.

Excursions on Assam Bengal Navigation's Brahmaputra cruise - Village man and cows sifting through rice - Lost With Purpose travel blog

In these areas, it’s common to drive cows in a circle through piles of harvested rice to separate the grains from the stalks.

A group of women from the Mishing tribe in Assam, India, in traditional colorful clothes.

This local lady was excited to show off her weaving: a gamosa , a traditional Assamese scarf.

Muggy middays in Kaziranga National Park brought herds of elephants shuffling across dusty roads mere meters away, and baby rhinos trotting after their mothers through the grasses alongside our open jeep.

River cruising with Assam Bengal Navigation in India - Herd of wild elephants crossing the road in Kaziranga National Park - Lost With Purpose travel blog

… and then there was that day we casually watched 20 or so elephants cross the road in Kaziranga. No big deal.

Review of Assam Bengal Navigation - Bengal tiger in Kaziranga National Park - Lost With Purpose travel blog

On the same day, Mohan spotted a tiger from the country boat. Also no biggie. Can you find him?

River cruise on the Brahmaputra with Assam Bengal Navigation - Mother rhino and baby in Kaziranga - Lost With Purpose travel blog

The first day in Kaziranga, our group asked to stop every time we saw a rhino off in the distance. Our driver laughed. “Wait until you visit central Kaziranga. Then you’ll see many, many rhinos much closer than this.” He was right.

Some afternoons of sailing were peaceful and without issues. Others—to my devilish amusement—were more eventful as the crew scrambled to dislodge the grounded boat from one of the many sand banks lurking below the shallow winter water levels.

Note the churning sand as the boat strains to unstick itself from the bottom. We were stuck here overnight, but it was hard to be too bothered about it with sunset views like this.

When all else fails, a government tugboat is called to push the boat off the sand bank. Never fear, between tugboats and the country boat, you’ll never have to worry about missing your flight or train because you’re stuck… unless acts of god(s) are at play.

Breezy evenings were spent sipping cold beers from the comfort of wicker chairs on the boat’s sundeck. Around 16:30, the boat’s growling engine gave way to still silence—no sailing after dark—as we anchored on islands and riverbanks in time to enjoy some of the most spectacular sunsets and sunrises I’ve ever seen.

Misty sunrises on the banks of the Brahmaputra

At the start of the voyage, I was ambivalent about the idea of being stuck on a boat for so long. Two weeks later, I’d do anything to be back on board.

It’s an especially easy statement to make, given my current circumstances. I’m writing this from an ancient hotel in the depths of Calcutta, mere days after leaving the boat. The walls on the street are all peeling and coated with grime; the honking of motorbikes outside never ceases as drivers dodge men peeing against the wall near my window. To escape the incessant pollution of my senses, I lose myself in reveries of life on the Brahmaputra.

Review of Assam Bengal Navigation - Misty morning and ABN Charaidew - Lost With Purpose travel blog

Real or dream?

Life was dreamlike throughout the cruise, too; there was something definitively surreal about stepping out of modern-day Indian chaos and onto the deck of the historic Charaidew.

Wooden floorboards creaked beneath my feet as I circled the dining room, admiring portraits of Maharajas from the days of yore. 1920s editions of Rudyard Kipling novels intermingled with maps and avian field guides on the tables and bookshelves in the boat’s saloon. A cup of Assamese tea warmed my hands as Romeet, the boat’s manager, relayed the history of the ship: it was one of the last barges used to transport tea and goods down the Brahmaputra river more than 40 years ago.

Could be 1977, could be 2017.

The boat’s age did have its downsides at times. Occasional issues with power cuts and disappearing hot water arose over the course of two weeks… but remember, this is India! Nothing ever goes precisely according to plan, and that is half the fun.

Assam Bengal Navigation’s fleet includes newer and more luxurious boats—generally reserved for Ganges cruises, though a new and far more luxurious boat will be introduced on the Brahmaputra in October 2018—but the Charaidew is where an era ended and a new story began. The experience of being on such a significant and nostalgic boat far outweighed the issue of an hour without hot water. In my opinion, anyway.

Good Lord – I LOVE it! I have been to India several times but never to the North East. I would absolutely love to be stuck on a boat and put my camera to work if the views are as incredible as you present. What a wonderful way to explore a unique part of the world! Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

Ah, you must visit the Northeast eventually, it’s a dream and a completely different world from the rest of India. And, of course, if you have the means, boating down the Brahmaputra is one of the chillest ways to explore Assam 😉

wow.. looks so amazing!! India is indeed a beautiful country Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I love your photography! Is there any way I can subscribe to your blog via email by any chance? Please let me know. Thank you! 🙂

Evening cruise on rifver Brahmaputra

A short 60 minute cruise--with snacks on board--and livemusic. AVerage facilities--not much sights due to darkness

The evening Dinner cruise on Brahmputra River is a good experience. Live Assamese cultural and dance performances on the deck is added attraction.

Took the cruise with family in Feb 2020. There are multiple options Guwhati. You could take the evening sunset cruise or a dinner cruise. We chose Alfresco Grand. The boat was clean , service good and there were various food options on board. Do give it a try.

This is a wonderful way to enjoy the sunset at Guwahati. We opted for a sunset cruise (there is also a dinner cruise!!) which is a boat ride for about an hour and a half, starting at 4.30 PM. Snacks are served (for a price) on the boat, and there is also some live music which is nice. But, the views of the sun going down on the river and behind hills and buildings as the boat winds across the river, are easily the best reason to do this cruise. A really nice way to spend an evening, whether you are with family or friends in Guwahati. High up on the list of things to do in Guwahati.

I took this cruise on 10-Nov-2019. The evening dinner cruise is really good with live performances on Bihu, classical Assamese forms and a live show on Lachit Borphukan. The latter will give you goose bumps. No need to run inside the cruise as they reserve seats with names. In the performances they tell about each and every prop which was commendable. The performances were followed by Hindi songs by a live band. The food was very very good. The welcome drink and a plate of starters is also included in the ticket price. All other hard drinks are billed as per menu. The tickets are around 1300/- for adults and 900/- for kids. It's a two hour cruise worth taking.

Very Good.Sat at the top deck.Duration was one hour with Music. Yesteryears hit Hindi film hits were played.Sunset was beautiful in the mountain with magnificent river flowing in the front.ibooked the previous day over phone and reached the counter at 4pm . They hold the booking till 4pm. Price Rs 450 per person.Lower deck is priced a little Lower. Restaurant inside ferry was already open.It has a bar also. Good variety of food and drinks were in the menu. Prices are higher but not very high. Sunset cruise was for one hour.Daily they have cruises at 4.30 and 6pm only. 6pm cruise is a dinner cruise at higher prices. The ferry deck was decked up for dinner cruise. The service was good.polite and quick.quick

The Mahabahu river cruise from Jorhat to guwahati

Relaxed trip, well organised, good food, happy attentive staff, superb photo opportunities of birds, animals and landscapes.....a great way to experience Assam - history, temples, villages, folklore and kaziranga with friends and family.

brahmaputra river cruise reviews

A comfortable enjoyable cruise of several days helped by an excellent crew with the naturalist, the paramedic, and director being particularly outstanding. Neena oversaw all details in this 'well-oiled' machine in an unobtrusive manner resulting in its smooth performance. The only spoiler was revealed the last day. While our group departure was (?intentionally) delayed, I tore my sweater on a chair. After seeing the damage to my sweater, Neena proceeded to order a long repair to all the chairs in the area while making no effort to call the onboard tailor to attempt to repair my baby alpaca wool sweater.

Brahmaputra cruise is very well managed cruise, The sights are quite beautiful and the organisers do a very good job The landscape and river is superb. The cruise was punctual the bookings were well managed they usher you to the tables which have your names, on prebooking. The live music was extremely good

We had an excellent cruise in Brahmaputra river.it was interesting and also enjoyed the restaurant and bar on cruise.

it is the best evening river cruise i have seen till date in India. well organised and worth the money. only go for the cruise boat in the picture, all others are scrap. book tickets well in advance and be there 1 hour before scheduled departure.

Thanks Mr Shashi for your valuable review and the encouragement ...we will look forward to serve in future also

We did a short 1 hour slow cruise and enjoyed the view along the Brahmaputra River. Bar service was good and staff pleasant. We were up on top deck so could view the sun setting in late afternoon. Good value and give a better perpective of river and city.

Testimonials.

I had a wonderful trip, the service and food was amazing. The cruise was very special also as it was evident that the boat was in a “less travelled” part of India for tourists.

Erica Kirkland, 28th October, 2018

Britain, uk.

We really have had a ball! We loved the boat and the boys and the way they looked after us. It was an unusual route through Assam and gave us an opportunity to see and feel the Indian culture. We have so many memories which are imprinted. I did a travelogue on Facebook so I can remember which where and how. I felt very emotional when I saw the Taj Mahal it just bowled me over that a man would go to so much trouble to carry out the wishes of his wife. I think we expected we would be on the SAGA coach tour for the golden triangle and when we found out we had a personal driver and tour guides well what can I say….. Thank you for making our time on the boat so special. I will never drink orange juice the same again.

With all good wishes for the future.

Jenny Summerfield

I took this cruise in February of this year, it was a fantastic experience and I can’t recommend it too highly. The Mahabaahu was just perfect and the crew extremely professional but also quite delightful people. As to the wildlife we saw it was like being inside a David Attenborough documentary!

Thank you to all the wonderful people, seen and unseen, who have contributed to this unique experience. We will never forget this week.

We have had a wonderful week on board. The excursions have really added to our understanding and enjoyment of local cultures. The staff has been friendly and helpful, and is an asset to the business. Thank you for a once in a life time experience.  Happy and safe sailing

Mahabaahu + all who “sail” in her deserve every success.

Jane Archer

Top uk cruise journalist.

Everything about the Brahmaputra cruise on the MV Mahabaahu was so exciting. We visited Hindu temples, remote villages, and ancient monuments, went on a dawn safari on elephant back in search of rhino and even saw a Bengal tiger. And then there is the river itself – blazing such a trail through Assam that the scenery changes by the hour. What an amazing week.

Helen Widen

The entire staff was warm, helpful and hospitable. The boat is elegant, yet comfortable and homey. I loved the cruise and all of our adventures. Best.

Patricia Bataille, 18th Nov, 2012

During my cruise on Brahmaputra in November 2012 had the opportunity to discover a very different part of India, which is Assam and the island of Majuli. I was very impressed by it, something like another world. The discovery of the Mishings community was a strong and magic moment, as well as the dances in a field near a satra, where both the tourists and the local people had a moment of exchange (we both discovered each other despite the language barrier). Another special moment was the park of Kaziranga with the tour on elephants, which allowed us to see the rhinos very near. The five o’clock tea in a tea estate was also a great moment. I would also not fail to thank all crew members for their service dispensing and kindness. They always tried to do their best in order to satisfy us. I will remember that cruise as an exciting moment far away from the stressing European life.

Russ and Mary Walkington

The People are beautiful, honest, Caring, efficient and wonderful and they make you feel welcome in there century and it’s very important when you are travelling.

The festival, Monuments and activates are very intrusting. The festival would not be the festival and activates cannot be the activity without the peoples and involvement, that’s what I love. I love the spirituality, Food and the colour of India. Absolutely everything, I have not got one complaint about this beautiful country.

It was wonderful to see the children running down the hill, the village We visited. Laughing and sharing their enjoyment. it was wonderful, it was heartwarming and Beautiful.

Barry & Ann Muhs, 19th Feb, 2012

To all the crew. This is the 4th river boat trip we have taken, and it is the best by far. The people and places along the river, plus all the birds and animals we saw made it outstanding. Also, all the people on-board the boat made it very special as well. This boat is very modern with up-to-date features to make life easy for people like us who love to travel. We will always have fond memories of this trip.

Peter and Alisa Hughs

We have had a wonderful trip and seen so many interesting places, and the dancing of the various different cultures has taught us so much about the way of life in this beautiful area. The jewel in the crown was Kaziranga which we would have liked to see more of. All the staff has been wonderful, so caring and friendly. Thank you so much.

Allan & Barbara Towart, 17th March, 2013

Our journey on the M.V.Mahabaahu was one of pure delight. Visiting unspoiled places, not being dragged into shops – cabins always clean, neat & tidy, done by almost invisible efficient staff. All staff on board were efficiently professional without being annoying – tours daily were always of interest & took us to wonderful unspoiled villages & places. Congratulations to chef & his staff for the wonderful variety of food we were presented with at every meal. This trip was a magical introduction to India for us & we hope to come back – We will have fond memories.

Pandaw Brahmaputra 1

BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER CRUISES

Worlds Best Cruise Line

India's Brahmaputra River is the 29th longest river in the world at 2,948 km long, and has a discharge of 19,200 cubic litres per second which puts northern India's great waterway in the top 10 when it comes to volume. This is a massive waterway, being the only river on Earth clearly visible from the moon during the Apollo missions. Flowing down from central Tibet through the legendary Tsangpo gorges, the Brahmaputra river opens out as it enters Assam to flow across that state and then through Bangladesh to flow out through the vast Sundarbans Delta, merging with the Ganges River , as they discharge into the Bay of Bengal.

The Brahmaputra river may be little-navigated today, but in colonial times steamer services operated as far as Dibrugarh. The river in places can be up to 20 miles wide and in the monsoon it floods the entire Assam plain. Indeed, East Bengal is not called “the wettest place on the planet" for nothing – it literally does have the world’s highest rainfall.

The river is so vast that any river cruise expedition undertaken here can be movingly wondrous, as you pass through this great emptiness of water, sand and shoal. Passengers of our Brahmaputra river cruises enjoy their trips in peace and tranquility with very little human activity on the riverbank. That means the wild life and bird life are profuse.

Anyone who has travelled through India by train or road will be amazed to learn that there is actually a form of surface transport through the country that offers total serenity and comfort: for it is possible to cruise for some 2,820 kilometres along the rivers of India, passing great cities, wildlife sanctuaries and historical monuments, and journey into the very heart of rural India by boat. Indeed once, such rivers as the Ganges, Hugli and Brahmaputra were all vital arteries for the East India Company, as for other empires before them, and British-run passenger boats plied these rivers from the early 18th century until competition from the railways became just too great by the end of the 19th century. Passenger boats on the Brahmaputra, however, continued to operate until the early 1950s when the tensions that emerged between India and Pakistan after Partition in 1947 finally spelt the end for river traffic. Until that time, daily passenger boats from Kolkata plied the Brahmaputra through Assam, aboard them a complement of tea planters, forest officers, soldiers and district magistrates; indeed, during the Second World War, they also played a vital role in bringing in troops and evacuating casualties during the great battles of Imphal and Kohima in 1944. Today, however, in association with a pioneering Indo-British cruise company, Naturetrek offers you the opportunity to re-live the experience of those days of the Raj, aboard a luxury 24-berth vessel exclusively chartered by us to provide a river cruise with a dedicated focus on the wildlife and national parks of Assam.

This 10-night cruise will include most of the highlights of Assam, with a particular focus on the wildlife, wilderness and tribal villages and cultures that represent the key points of interest along the mighty Brahmaputra, for often the riverbed is 20 to 30 kilometres across, an empty world of grass-covered and forested islands, sand spits and channels, favoured only by rural fishermen and a marvellous birdlife. We will also look out for mammals, especially when passing through Assam’s national parks, although throughout our cruise we may expect to see the endangered and enigmatic Gangetic River Dolphin, a real highlight of this journey.

We begin our cruise, after a night in the fascinating old colonial city of Kolkata and a domestic flight, near Jorhat in Assam. Our first point of call will be the Gibbon Sanctuary at Mariani, where we will walk in the forest in search of Hoolock Gibbons, India’s only species of ape, and a wealth of birdlife. Next stop will be Majuli Island, reputedly the world’s largest river island and short-listed for future UNESCO World Heritage status on account of its rich culture. Here we will visit some of the island’s unique Hindu monasteries (famous for their dance drama performances), experience a typical Mising tribal lunch in a stilted bamboo hut, and enjoy the birds of Sakuli Bheel (lake). On other occasions we will spend time gently cruising down the Brahmaputra, relaxing and birdwatching from the sundeck, perhaps with a visit to a tribal village.

On our fourth day Kaziranga National Park will appear on the left bank and we now have a chance of seeing wild Asian Elephants and wild Water Buffalo from the boat, perhaps even a Tiger! We'll be alongside the national park for the next three days, during which we'll explore the park by jeep. Kaziranga is a 430 square kilometre park, consisting of broad tracts of tall elephant grass interspersed with evergreen forests, shallow lakes and reedbeds. It is probably the best place on Earth to observe the very rare Greater One-horned Rhinoceros and it is possible to encounter as many as 40 of these prehistoric-looking beasts during a day in the field. Asian Elephants and wild Water Buffalo are also plentiful, as are Sambar, Hog and Swamp Deer, and Wild Boar, the prey of the Leopards and Tigers which roam the park, although amid so much cover they are always hard to see. We may even chance upon some of the more elusive residents such as Gaur, Leopard Cat and Sloth Bear, whilst the rare Capped Langur, Assam Macaque and Hoolock Gibbon form a trio of primates that inhabit the woodlands. Despite the profusion of mammals, the birdlife is not eclipsed and a tremendously diverse bird list features many rare or local species such as Bengal Florican and Adjutant Stork.

Leaving Kaziranga, we will next explore Nameri National Park (which lies in the Himalayan foothills an hour’s drive north of Tezpur) both on foot and by means of a raft journey through the park. We will also visit Orang National Park, which lies alongside the Brahmaputra, exploring it by means of a smaller boat which we will take up a tributary into the heart of the park where we will search for birds and mammals by jeep.

Towards the end of our river cruise we will explore a range of jungle-covered hills and visit the idyllic and isolated village of Ganesh Pahar where we will take a birdwatching walk through rice paddies and unspoilt forest. These pretty hills, or the Golden Langurs of Peacock Island, are likely to be amongst our final memories of the stillness and beauty of the mighty Brahmaputra, before we must disembark at Guwahati and commence our journey homeward. For tour members wishing to extend their holiday, we recommend a pre-tour visit to the Sunderbans, the world’s largest delta and mangrove swamp, renowned for its waterbirds and man-eating Tigers!

We spent 11 nights on the Sukapha river boat. The crew and food were wonderful. The River is fascinating with constantly moving sandbanks. Kaziranga National Park was amazing, containing 2,600+ rhino, loads of elephant, buffalo, birds, etc. We saw two tigers, one just two metres away beside a road. We visited remote villages too, some transient on the sandbanks, and temples. We were so remote that the local people took photos of us! Our Leader Sujan was brilliant. Naturetrek are an amazing company creating fascinating opportunities for wildlife viewing. I have already booked to go with them to Svalbard in June in search of polar bears ... A.P. Hampshire, Mar 23
We stayed for 3 nights in the Sudarbans Jungle Camp in the Sundarbans National Park. We visited the local village and spent 2 days cruising between the islands. After a day in Kolkata we flew to Jorhat to join the Sukapha for a 10-day wildlife and cultural cruise on the Brahmaputra river. During our cruise we went on 4 jeep safaris in the Kaziranga National Park and visited several settlements along the river bank. From Guwahati we travelled by bus to stay for 3 nights in the Musa Jungle Retreat near the Manas National Park. The trip gave us a really good mix of nature and sightseeing. The three separate components were well balanced and complemented each other. Our main guide Sujan Chatterjee was really excellent and he was assisted by others who were also very knowledgeable about wildlife and/or the local culture. The whole experience on the Sukapha was brilliant. The accommodation was very good, the food superb and the crew could not be faulted (cheerful, polite, helpful, knowledgeable - I could go on). It is one of the best holidays we have had and well worth waiting for since 2020 (due to Covid!!). We have been on a number of other Naturetrek holidays (to Myanmar, The Falklands, Portugal, the Pantanal) and have thoroughly enjoyed all of them. The accommodation is usually very good and their wildlife guides are excellent. Their brochures gives clear information on what to expect from the holiday and their administration is well organized. G.L. Warwickshire, Feb 23
The star of this cruise is the mighty river Brahmaputra ... the people living along, on and with the river, their culture, the wildlife ... and all the sensations we passed through. Very nice, very competent and dedicated tour guide and assistants who like people, who like sharing ideas and experiences, who are very positive and show a fine sense of humour. And a great ship crew.  S.H. Switzerland, Mar 19
It was a holiday with a difference for us, being a cruise. However we thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation and the guides and crew and all on board staff were a delight to travel with. Smiling faces and a warm welcome are priceless. We chose the holiday because of Kaziranga Park and we love wildlife and especially bird life. So for us we had the best of everything. It was a wonderful experience and one we will always remember. M.C. Lancashire, Mar 19
A most enjoyable holiday with a really good mix of wildlife and culture. All staff and guides did a wonderful job. Can’t praise too highly the enthusiastic and cheerful guides. N.L. Devon
Nick and Sujan had got remarkable eyesight for spotting birds! They were both very knowledgeable and looked after everybody very well, as well as taking our teasing and banter with grace! I would recommend them to everybody. A.P. Hampshire
The cruise was outstanding. The crew of the boat could not have been more helpful and we were particularly impressed with the food that was provided. Sujan, Tika and Rajan went out of their way to make the experience of Assam as interesting and enjoyable as they possibly could. They all worked hard to ensure we had a fabulous holiday. We were very grateful. D.F. Worcestershire
We cannot speak highly enough of the team looking after us. We could not have had better leaders than Nick and Sujan. Their ability to impart their incredible knowledge, with such enthusiasm, patience and sense of humour helped make the holiday truly unforgettable. Mr & Mrs W. Suffolk
The holiday was wonderful and the leaders were excellent. Sujan and Bunty made a superb team - the one larger than life and extrovert and the other more thoughtful; both were extremely knowledgeable and very good company. They organised a tour of Kolkata (for those who wanted) before our flight home, and came with us - I love to make the most of my time on holiday and this was a real bonus. V.G. Surrey
This was a fantastic holiday. Well organised and plenty of advance information supplied by Rajan. The boat and its crew were top class in terms of accommodation and the service provided. The local naturalists and cultural guide were also excellent and very kind. Sujan and Bunty were also excellent and Sujan in particular was a very pro-active leader and great fun as well as being knowledgeable. We had high hopes of this holiday, but they were exceeded - a fantastic combination of wildlife, culture, the boat, guides and India! R.L. Kent
A thoroughly enjoyable holiday from start to finish. I did not want to come home. Far and away the best Naturetrek holiday yet. I cannot praise the staff highly enough. Nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to provide extra experiences. Just the right mix of wildlife and culture. J.K. West Yorkshire
Sujan's ability, together with Imran and the local guides, to spot and identify species of birds and mammals, then to pinpoint them in the telescope, enabled us to see clearly what we otherwise might have missed, especially since my skill with binoculars is lacking! His humour and wealth of stories kept us entertained and we commend his organisational talents. P.K. Devon
A fascinating exploration of wildlife and the way of life of local people on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra. The Sunderbans extension was well worth the additional days. E.W. Kent
A memorable holiday with fantastic guides and boat crew. The trip could have been repetitive but each day was different and memorable for different reasons. T.B. Clwyd
Sujan was a real star and packed so much in each day. My wife and I really enjoyed the trip and would certainly travel with Naturetrek again. M.R. Cheshire
Enjoyed the boat, food and crew excellent. Sujan was a very good leader and birder. Itinerary was varied, birds, animals and culture. Mr & Mrs J. West Sussex
The guides were superb and such fun too. The group worked well and everyone seemed to get on really well. Highlights were a very close rhino encounter followed shortly by a Tiger in full view. Mr & Mrs E. Buckinghamshire
On board RV Charaidew more than 5 star in levels of cleanliness and service. Between us we have been on many trips but both agree that this is our best to date. Very interesting, exciting and yet also relaxing, something we have not experienced before. Naturetrek guides are always the best, what can one say about Sujan that I'm sure has not already been said, larger than life and excellent naturalist, camera and binocular repairer and just great company, a star. The 3 local guides were a delight, Imran with his wealth of local knowledge, and their newest guide Mohan was spectacular, realising that we were really interested in everything, he even managed to spot a beautiful frog in leaf litter as we were driving along, real hawk eyes and again they were so helpful and friendly. J.S. Essex
The boats and lodges used were excellent and the tour leader was the best in expertise and personal skills. Best things were jeep safaris, elephant rides, raft ride and close views of large mammals. M.D. Warwickshire
We were very impressed with Sujan and the other guides. They were well organised, worked really hard and excelled as a team. Humour was great. Sujan is a superb leader, light of touch in terms of keeping everybody up to the mark but noticing any small failings and rectifying them immediately. An absolute gem.The balance of the knowledge of the guides was excellent and the itinerary catered for all tastes and degrees of enthusiasm and knowledge. The ship and its crew were excellent. The transport drivers were all careful and professional. J.I. Hampshire
Sujan and his organisation and briefings were really excellent. The staff on the boat were extremely helpful and the other guides looked after us very well too (including helping with butterfly ID). J.G. & A.D. Glamorgan
I loved the variety on this holiday, a good mixture of birdwatching, animals and culture. The best bit was being on the boat and just watching life on the river banks passing by like a vast cinema screen. Never a moment of boredom! My father loved the excitement of seeing not only a rhino close by, but a Tiger as well! We both felt so spoilt as we were looked after so well by the welcoming and cheerful boat crew. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing and excellent having a buffet at meal times so one could have as much or as little as one wanted! Our guides were really helpful, enthusiastic and very patient. J.H. Dorset

ASSAM BENGAL

IMG_1860.jpg

River cruises that last days. Memories that last a lifetime.

Assam Bengal Navigation is the original cruise operator on India’s Brahmaputra and Ganges Rivers, having navigated these mighty waterways since 2003.

A world away from the more well-trodden roads of India, the eastern corner remains untouched by mass tourism.

From dancing monks to one-horned rhinos, colonial vestiges to terracotta temples, remote villages to bustling cities, travelling by boat opens up a treasure trove of history, culture, wildlife and religion.

The cruise may last only days, but the memories will last a lifetime.

BRAHMAPUTRA RIVER CRUISE

Journeys through assam.

"Among the world's top 10 adventure cruises"

With its blue rivers that often resemble the sea; green mountains that are home to leopards and elephants; and swathes of aromatic tea gardens forming the world’s largest tea-growing region, it’s easy to understand why Assam is a very special place on earth.

The mighty Brahmaputra River originates in Tibet and brings its glacial Himalayan waters down to India. As a vital source of transportation, its waters bring trade and life to the villages that dot its banks. The Brahmaputra River Valley is home to seven national parks, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making it a wildlife enthusiast’s paradise; home to an abundance of unique flora and fauna that may be viewed from the ship’s deck.

The river offers a snapshot of life in northeast India; a chance to explore country towns and rural villages, the river island of Majuli and ancient temples, as well as spotting the magnificent One-horned Rhino on a jeep safari.

GANGES RIVER CRUISE

Journeys through bengal.

"Among the world's 40 best cruising holidays"

The Guardian UK

The Ganges may begin life as a mere trickle in the Western Himalayas, but as it powers across India it brings life, livelihoods and cultural wealth to millions of people. Its vital waterways and religious significance have drawn travellers to its banks for thousands of years, creating a confluence of colonisers, from the Mughals to the British, the French to the Dutch. This rich tapestry of historic sites, cultural influences, and political epochs has left a legacy that endures to this day in its buildings, people, religious sites, and food.

From the crumbling vestiges of the British Empire that line Kolkata’s wide boulevards, to the vibrant, electrifying colour of Varanasi, the Ganges peels back the layers of history that have moulded India into the country she is today. Besides being a life-giving force of nature, it’s not uncommon to find people bathing in the latte-coloured waters of the Ganges, and offering flowers and lit oil clay lamps whilst in prayer.

A fantastic voyage down the Brahmaputra, a river of outstanding beauty and cultural associations. Other than this, the itinerary was well balanced between history, local village life, culinary traditions and wild life.

The ship itself was efficiently run with grace and hospitality. The crew were wonderful in their attention to every detail.

It’s left me wanting more experiences of this sort.
