Christian Lee Hutson Announces May Co-Headlining Tour with Fenne Lily
Christian Lee Hutson will embark on a co-headlining tour with Fenne Lily this May for a month-long run of shows that span nationwide; head below to check out all upcoming dates.
Christian Lee Hutson will embark on a co-headlining tour with Fenne Lily this May for a month-long run of shows that span nationwide. Last year Hutson sold out his first-ever headlining shows in New York, Los Angeles and London, followed by his first-ever headlining tour that ran from July to August. His latest album Quitters was released on April 1 and produced by Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers ; Hutson was also able to play these songs supporting Bridgers and Bright Eyes this past spring and in late August.
This past December Hutson released a re-worked cover of “Silent Night.” Known for his witty lyricism and development of characters, it only feels natural that Hutson would not only cover a classic Christmas song but adjust its point of view to that of one of his typically down-on-their-luck protagonists. Filmed in a Christmas store, listen and watch the video for his rendition of the track below.
Hutson explains:
“Some of my favorite songs are Christmas songs but they’re often about Jesus being born or old men riding on donkeys to give presents to a baby king, Lyrically, they’re all pretty scary and I imagine this baby holding humanity hostage. So, I wrote my own version of one of my favorites about spending Christmas in Ohio.”

“Hope and Humor”: Christian Lee Hutson Dives into the Stories of New Album ‘Quitters’
Atwood Magazine dives into ‘Quitters’ with Christian Lee Hutson to discuss the people that inspire us, the stories that haunt us, and the phrases that ground us.
Stream: ‘quitters’ – christian lee hutson.

I’m proud of all the work my friends and I did. It feels to me like a perfect picture of a specific time in my life.
I like to imagine Christian Lee Hutson on a park bench, holding a microscope up to a leaf, or watching people check out at a grocery store with a notebook and pen in his hand. Though I’m sure this is not the case, that’s the impression Quitters imparts. In his new album, released April 1, 2022 via ANTI Records, Christian Lee Hutson pulls landscapes out of thin air, each track a different world. Quitters is proof that Hutson lives in the details.
Produced by friends and collaborators Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, the Southern California meets Americana sound of Quitters is new to some, but to Hutson, it’s home. Each song is a character study: whether it be a relationship you just can’t figure out or a ball you just can’t get rolling, the no-names on the album can relate.
As Hutson imparts in the album’s opener, “ Pain is a way you can move through time and visit people that are gone in your mind.” The track fades with an Elton John meets “Scott Street” eruption. The band repeatsm, “ There’s a consolation prize in the corner of my mind .” Remembrance is the cornerstone of this record, linking its unforgiving arms with grief and pity.
“Endangered Birds” follows with a story that steps into the worn work boots of an ex-husband. The instrumentals are bruised black and blue, with a gentle string harmony loosely wrapped around the words. The character laments his ex-wife’s new husband as he thinks, “ I’m peeking through the bandages to see if I can handle it. ” His self-loathing voice is a shoulder to lean on as his stories punch you in the gut, slowly, then all at once.
With a George Bailey flair, Hutson picks pieces of himself up and out of worlds, showing himself what could have been. In “OCDemon,” he admits, “ I’m as bad as they come, turn around and run, don’t wanna hurt anyone .” Over a killer guitar part, Hutson lyrics stumble at a mile a minute. The track is his confessional, as glaringly personal as Hutson gets.
Ironic as it may be, Quitters ends with a beginning. The piano is dampened with the weight of a haunting melody, as Hutson’s whisper joins in. As a former figure skater, Christian Lee Hutson nurses an injury in “Triple Axel.” He sings, “ Infinity symbol lifting you into the sky, twisting your ankle, second opinions, trembling out on the ice .”
Whether it’s a failure or success, a new love or a heartbreak, Christian Lee Hutson steps in and out of time with ease.
People are his playthings, statues positioned with imperfections on display.
Atwood Magazine connected with Christian Lee Hutson to discuss Quitters, epic tales and all.
A CONVERSATION WITH CHRISTIAN LEE HUTSON
Christian Lee Hutson: I’m doing well. Putting out this record and finally being able to play shows has been so exciting and overwhelming. It’s wild to me still that anyone has heard any of these songs.
Christian Lee Hutson: Even if I could, I don’t think he’d believe me. They were my favorite band back then and I think the idea of even getting to see them play live seemed impossible to me. All their shows sold out so quick.
Christian Lee Hutson: We just had a lot of fun. All our little puppies were running around the studio and we were just trying to make each other laugh and get the songs down as best we could.
Christian Lee Hutson: Thank you so much. I’m not sure where I got it. I was a pretty lonely kid so I was always reading. I wanted to be a novelist back then, but then I started writing songs, which probably is just a lazier version.
Christian Lee Hutson: I feel like as I’ve gotten older, I want to see more hope and humor in stories. That’s the main way I think my writing has changed too. Conor once told me, “you write about parents a lot” so I guess that’s a pattern.
Interview with Christian Lee Hutson: From Collaborator to Solo Storyteller
Christian Lee Hutson: I think it just must have been how I was feeling at the time. Most of it was written in early COVID. I’d just been diagnosed with OCD. I was horrifically depressed. I’m not totally sure. I’m still trying to learn about why I write what/when I do.
Christian Lee Hutson: Sometimes while we were making this record, we were just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what stuck. We had Nate Walcott in the studio with us and he is a fantastic trumpet player and string arranger so we just let him loose on those two.
Christian Lee Hutson: I don’t know how purposeful they are, but generally, as I’m out there existing in the world, I find myself repeating little phrases to myself. Maybe this has leaked out into my music as well.
Christian Lee Hutson: I did. It made it feel complete to me.
Christian Lee Hutson: I’m proud of all the work my friends and I did. It feels to me like a perfect picture of a specific time in my life.

His forlorn version of “Silent Night” follows a narrator that is lonely during the holidays. The opening lines begin: “Silent night / Over the Rhine / Standing in the checkout line / Weather report on the radio / 65 percent chance of snow / I wanna call but I don’t / I wanna call but I don’t.” Filmed in a Christmas store, listen and watch the video for his rendition of the track below.

“Hutson’s reimagining of “Silent Night” is quite moving,” said FLOOD . “Call me a sap, but tears began to peak behind my eyes when he softly repeats, “Making up for lost time” at the end. Light the fire, gather ’round, and grab the tissues.”

Christian Lee Hutson Releases New Album 'Quitters'
The album was produced by his friends Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst.
Los Angeles's Christian Lee Hutson is releasing 'Quitters' today, his sophomore record of short story-like songs that evoke the complicated feelings we all face when getting older. These songs both reflect on the cringeworthy moments of our past and contemplate with dread and loneliness what might preoccupy the future.
Produced by his friends Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst, listen to the album in full below. Hutson has also released a new video for the track "State Bird" today, watch it below; directed by Waley Wang, the clip completes the two part journey in Washington Square Park that began with the video for "Strawberry Lemonade".
Across 'Quitters' 13 tracks, Hutson crafts a portrait of the Los Angeles that he's from, with characters who carry this golden light and sinister geography inside them. It's a place where everything in the end gets blown away and paved over with something new, where even the ocean and fires are always whispering, "One day we'll take it all back."
Quitters is also a departure from the digital recording of his debut. Hutson stated, "When we made [debut album] 'Beginners' the aim was to make simple digital recordings of how I would play the songs in the room. With this record, Phoebe and Conor had an idea that it would be fun to make it to tape. Phoebe is my best friend and making 'Beginners' with her was so comfortable and easy. So I wanted to work with her again."
He then added: "We made 'Quitters' all at once. We hadn't seen each other for sixth months and this was the first time being in the room together again. It was a real familial feeling, working with the same people, playing with the same people where everyone gets so good at knowing one another's tricks and are complimenting one another's weird mistakes. My favorite records are when the guitar gets fed up and then that becomes the recorded version. And it's those accidents that make them special."
This record is Christian Lee Hutson's world: a California filled with the fuzzy haze of a dream, and the half-remembered moments of a forgotten life. Songs that say, "That was so long ago, but I still remember you." A world where the past is never past, and the old people we once were still live inside the new people we are.
Hutson is currently on tour with Bright Eyes, performing in Cleveland, Boston, Philadelphia and more in the coming weeks. After that he will headline Baby's All Right in Brooklyn and Highland Park Ebell Club in Los Angeles. In May he will head to Europe for a run of shows with Elanor Moss, including two sold out London dates. He will also perform at The Great Escape Festival on May 12. All upcoming dates are listed below.

CHRISTIAN LEE HUTSON
Australian tour february 2023.
Handsome Tours are proud to present the debut Australian shows from Christian Lee Hutson , with headline dates across the country as well as supporting spots on Phoebe Bridgers’ headline shows this February.
Christian Lee Hutson starts his new album Quitters with a laugh. In this follow up to his ANTI records debut, Beginners, Hutson moves away from the focus on growing up to the dread and complications of growing older. The laugh that announces Quitters is the kind you’ll find at the end of John Huston films, one of resignation and release, and somehow a cosmic laugh that says “California,” a place where lonely people gather together like birds.
Produced by Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst , Quitters is also a departure from the digital recording of his debut. Hutson stated, “When we made Beginners the aim was to make simple digital recordings of how I would play the songs in the room. With this record, Phoebe and Conor had an idea that it would be fun to make it to tape. Phoebe is my best friend and making Beginners with her was so comfortable and easy. So I wanted to work with her again.” “I took a long time with Beginners,” Hutson added. “I had those songs for 10 years, but these songs came out a lot faster.” Because the songs from Quitters were written in a shorter time, “there was a little bit of insecurity with the lyrics. Having Conor there served the purpose of someone who I really respect as a lyricist and could soothe my anxiety.”
