The Norwegian Sun Review & Everything You Need To Know

norwegian sun review

The Norwegian Sun is one of the oldest cruise ships in NCL’s fleet dating back to 2001. With several refits over the years, the ship, while old by industry standards, is extremely well-maintained and modernized in all the ways you’d expect. Unfortunately, it’s not a ship for everyone and we’ll explain why.

Norwegian Sun Cancellations

Norwegian Cruise Line has contacted both travel agents and booked guests to inform them about the cancellation of seven months’ worth of cruises aboard the Norwegian Sun. This encompasses sailings scheduled from late March to early November 2025. Notifications have been sent to booked guests, and the cruise line is also reaching out to travel partners to ensure they can inform their affected clients. The email states, “Due to a fleet redeployment, Norwegian Sun’s sailings from March 28, 2025, through November 3, 2025, have been canceled. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.” Full refunds for the 22 canceled cruises are automatically being processed back to the original payment method within 30 days from the cruise line. Following this, it may take an additional 7-10 days for the refunds to be processed through individual financial institutions. We appreciate your understanding during this process. There has been no reason given for the cancellations but would make me wonder if the ship is being sold off or scrapped given it is one of the oldest ships in the Norwegian Fleet (initially launched in 2001)

About the Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship

Built in 2001, the Norwegian Sun capacity is about 1950 passengers (plus approximately 900 crew), about half the size of most newly built cruise ships. In 2018 the NCL Sun had a complete refit and was upgraded in line with the NCL program called Norwegian Edge , to bring it to the standards of the rest of the fleet. During the renovation, the Sun received upgraded amenities including restaurants, pools, and bars, that you’d expect and want to experience on the rest of the Norwegian Cruise Line ships.  Specialty dining was added, the Spinnaker lounge was refurbished (commonly known as the observation Lounge on the ship in the forward area) and common areas including the casino, pools, and Bliss lounge were also added or refurbished.

The rooms were mostly left original during the refit.

The added spaces are a bit unusual and nothing like the other ships in the Norwegian fleet. The specialty dining exists mainly in a long galley space that contains Cagney’s, Teppanyaki, Sushi, and Los Lobos Cantina. Only La Cucina and Le Bistro have truly dedicated spaces that aren’t mixed with other eateries.

Despite the refit, the ship remains cramped in most spaces when anywhere near capacity.

Norwegian Sun Cruise Review

What’s the vibe of the NCL Sun?

Overall, the clientele is a little older than on other Norwegian ships most likely due to the itineraries and the lack of child-friendly activities. There are no water parks, slides, or really designated child-friendly areas making the journeys feel more “adult” than other ships. There are also far fewer passengers trying to ‘break even on the drink package’ making the overall feel of the ship calmer and less of a party vibe.

The Cabins / Staterooms on the Norwegian Sun

While not substantially upgraded during the 2018 refit, the rooms are spacious and modernized with plenty of storage and everything you’d expect in a typical cruise cabin. The cabins include both 220 and 110v electrical sockets in a couple of areas along with a USB plug on either side of the bed integrated into the lighting.

The bathrooms weren’t part of the overall renovation and remain dated.

Interior Cabins & Staterooms

Quite possibly the most surprising rooms on the NCL Sun are the interior cabins. They are more spacious than many balcony rooms on newer ships. Many include a seating area and small bar space. For passengers who like interior staterooms but are concerned about the (usually) smaller size, this may be a perfect option.

Norwegian Cruise Line SUN interior cabin

The Balcony Staterooms

These are the choice cabins on the Sun as they are quite a bit bigger than the interior rooms with a nice seating area, simple modern decor, huge amounts of storage, and of course a large wall of glass. The design and layout of these staterooms make them feel substantially larger than most other balcony cabins on other ships.  With mirrors everywhere, including over the headboard, the cabins feel slightly dated.

The Suites on the Norwegian Sun

The Norwegian Sun doesn’t have the Haven which is found on all the newer ships but they do have a selection of suites that are a bit larger and include butler service. The suite options include:

Owner Suites – Large 1-bedroom staterooms that are nearly 800 square feet in size with the huge balcony

Penthouse Suites – One bedroom suites approximately 350 sq feet + 126 sq foot balcony

Mini-Suites – Slightly larger than a Balcony Cabin + Bathtubs

The Suite passengers gain access to Cagney’s for lunch since there are no dedicated suite or Haven restaurants available.  (not available for the Mini-Suites or Club Suites)

Dining & Restaurant Options on The Norwegian Sun

As with all Norwegian Cruise Ships, there are free and specialty dining options available to all passengers. The free options are more limited than other NCL Cruise ships simply due to the size of the vessel.

Included Free Restaurants:

There are two Main Dining Rooms serving essentially the same food every evening.

Four Seasons , located in the center of the ship off of the main atrium is a large dining space that fills up early and sometimes has availability issues with smaller 2 and 4-party tables, where they’ll ask if you’d like to be seated with another party.

Seven Seas , our preferred main dining restaurant, is located in the rear of the ship has abundant space, great views from everywhere especially the aft of the ship, and is the only main dining room that serves lunch (on select days).

Norwegian Sun - Main Dining room - seven seas

Also included is the Garden Cafe (Buffet) . This space is entirely too small for the size of the ship and a very cramped buffet layout creates lines or confusion among passengers trying to get to different sections.  The food overall was usually good, albeit sometimes unusual.

If the buffet seating is too crowded, the ship has done a good job to provide areas for overflow seating including an outdoor area aft with nearly as much seating as indoors along with another buffet line that serves basics like burgers and hotdogs. Many passengers didn’t realize there were food options outside in this area since the food was tucked away behind the bar! Don’t miss it, it’s a great alternative to the buffet.

Moderno, opposite the buffet, is open during lunch for additional seating. There is also a dedicated pizza and noodle station set up during lunch in the Moderno dining room, both quite good.

Finally, what’s missing from the Norwegian Sun is O’Sheehan’s bar & grill .  While there is no large bar/pub as featured on the more modern ships, the Sun does have a small sports bar serving a limited menu similar to what’s found at O’Sheehan’s including the yummy chicken wings and a few pub burgers & hotdogs. Unfortunately, food service starts at 5:30 pm so getting your mid-day pub snack isn’t possible.

Specialty Dining Restaurants on the Norwegian Sun

After the 2018 refit of the Sun, more specialty restaurants were added. We tried them all!

Cagney’s Steak House – The staple of Norwegian’s Premium Dining was consistent with other ships. The starters were as expected with small-ish portion sizes. The steaks were amazing and perfectly cooked and the sides were tasty as usual. The desserts were ridiculously large and quite good.  See the Cagney’s Menu

Le Bistro – The French restaurant on NCL ships always seems to be hit or miss, regardless of the ship. The same is true with the Sun. The appetizers always seem to be a bit off while the main meals are generally quite good. Since this space is separate from the other specialty restaurants, it actually feels more elegant and refined.  See the Le Bistro Menu

Teppanyaki – The Teppanyaki grill, again, is always very consistent across the whole Norwegian brand. On the Sun, the space is a bit smaller and in a fully enclosed room with multiple grilles. It’s exactly as expected in all ways including food quality and experience. But be sure to wear clothes that you don’t plan on using again on your vacation! You leave smelling like the whole restaurant and it’s impossible to get it out of your clothes.

Teppanyaki Restaurant Norwegian Sun

Moderno Churrascaria – We love the Brazilian steakhouse concept on Norwegian Cruise Line. However, for this particular ship, the biggest letdown is the physical space where Moderno Churrascaria is. It almost seems like an afterthought being very bland and almost an extension of the buffet. Aside from that, the menu is exactly as you’d expect across the NCL Brand.  Unfortunately during the Mediterranean sailings, we were told by the restaurant managers that the quality of meat sometimes suffers from the suppliers. We noticed this mostly in the Picanha meat, which is ironic considering the ship sails from Portugal, where this meat cut is popular and quite good. See the Moderno Menu

Los Lobos Cantina – We were surprised to see Los Lobos Cantina on the Norwegian Sun since it’s a relatively new concept by NCL. The food was quite good and had something for everyone looking for a full Mexican meal. The meat dishes such as Carne Asada were superior while the fish dishes lacked flavor. The best surprise of Los Lobos was the unique margarita drinks available, all of them well within the beverage package limits. Booking a table there using one of the dining package credits may not be the best value, as most of the meals won’t add up to the $59 dining package value (when used elsewhere). So it’s just better to use those credits at Cagney’s, Le Bistro, etc. See the Los Lobos Cantina Menu

Sushi Bar – The Sushi bar on the NCL Sun seems like a bit of an afterthought, but it’s comfortable and easy to get a table or sit at the sushi bar. Unfortunately, the quality of the sushi served isn’t great. It may be sufficient to cure a quick sushi roll craving, but not advised for a full meal. It pales in comparison to the sushi bar on other Norwegian ships such as the Epic. Definitely do NOT use a dining package credit at the sushi ba r!

La Cucina – The well-known Italian restaurant on board NCL ships is on the Norwegian Sun as well, in a dedicated space that is quiet and elegant. The food at La Cucina is the most consistent on this ship with the rest of the NCL brand.  If you’ve eaten at La Cucina on other larger NCL ships, you should be satisfied with the food quality and preparation on the Sun. Take a look at the La Cucina Menu .

Bars & Pubs on the Sun

It’s not much of a surprise that Norwegian has made sure there are plenty of watering holes on the ship! Even with capacity at nearly 100%, it wasn’t often difficult to get a cocktail or soda from any bar.

Bliss Lounge – This repurposed central space is more of a theater-style setup rather than a “club” as it is on other ships. The space is used for live music and some of the special events on the ship (glow party, etc). But when you want a drink, this bar is almost always quiet and drinks are easily available.

Atrium Bar & Cafe – More of a coffee bar with a side of alcohol within the small atrium of the ship.

Champs Bar – At the very top of the ship (Forward), this outdoor space is a great place to get a drink when you want to sit in the Spinnaker and the bar there is not yet open (Days). Just exit Spinnaker and go straight up the outdoor stairs to the bar, which is rarely busy.

Champagne & Martini Bar – The most popular space later in the evening, this bar has seating around the atrium and the bar itself with table service. It gets quite busy, so get a table when it’s available.

Los Lobos Bar – The hidden gem! It’s a small nook just inside the specialty restaurant check-in desk. Most guests don’t realize you can just go to this bar and have a drink without being booked in the cantina or other specialty restaurants. The best part is, if you’re a margarita lover, you can order the specialty margaritas any time the bar is open serving Los Lobos Cantina! (definitely don’t settle for the everyday margarita found everywhere on the ship)

Great Outdoors – The best outdoor bar space serving the rear (aft) of the ship. Great views all day / evening and often with food options to go with the drinks.

Sports Bar – Open all day and til late at night, this is the answer to the O’Sheehan’s bar & grill found on the other NCL ships.

Casino Bar – Just a simple walk-up bar to grab a drink while in the casino. It’s also a good place to get something if the rest of the bars are crowded, as the casino bar is usually empty.

Topsiders Bar – The typical pool bar serving everything the ship has to offer.

Windjammer & Havana Bar – A favorite on the ship! A dark wood paneled room with a large bar where some of the best cocktails are made. I still don’t get the division between Windjammer and Havana, as it’s the same space, theme, etc. Usually, solo performers arrive in the evening for light music.

Spinnaker Lounge – The crown jewel of the ship! At the very front of the NCL Sun, this huge lounge with sweeping views and relaxing seating areas is the place to be. During the day it’s a great place to read, play cards, or just gaze out at the sea. You can even exit the bar and walk around the front of the glass windows outside and see the wide open ocean! Stunning!

The bar usually doesn’t open until around 4pm, so grab a drink at Champs. Unfortunately, the ship has chosen this venue to do karaoke at around 10pm many nights, which makes the space less enjoyable.

Norwegian Sun Review - Spinnaker Lounge

Norwegian Sun Entertainment, what’s on board?

Entertainment quality is always very subjective, and with NCL cutting entertainment budgets in 2023, it’s a bit of a sore spot with travelers. On the Norwegian Sun, entertainment doesn’t include the big production shows found on larger ships, but it’s sometimes quite good. You’ll hear people complain about the theater shows, and in fairness, they are a bit repetitive, but the ship doesn’t do much to promote the shows they actually have. The musicians in each of the venues with a rare exception were very good and enjoyable to listen to. The stage shows were a bit strange but entertaining enough to give passengers something to do.

The entertainment on the Norwegian Sun is probably the biggest weakness of the ship. Passengers who book their cruise around a strong entertainment lineup will likely be disappointed. Otherwise, we found it sufficient and as expected for a smaller ship.

Some of the shows included :

Rock Symphonies Violinist – An incredibly talented violinist with the support of other instruments

World Beat  – A variety show of sorts featuring music & dance from around the world.

Rock Tribute – A tribute performance for Queen, The Who, and Journey

Other activities & things to do on the ship

Despite the smaller size of the Sun, there are quite a few activities including an outdoor sports court, shuffleboard, and a full ship jogging track. For the healthier version of cruise passengers (rare, I know), there is a full-size gym that is remarkably well-equipped, and a separate aerobics studio with scheduled classes. The studio is free to use for yoga, stretching, HIIT, etc at your own leisure when classes aren’t being taught. These studios are complimentary and open 6 am until 11 pm (so there’s hardly an excuse!).

During the day, there were plenty of random activities around the ship for just about anyone. The Bliss Lounge often featured new release movies, there were always arts and crafts, Zumba classes, and themed trivia to be found.

For passengers wanting some quiet time, the Norwegian Sun has one of the nicer libraries and game rooms we’ve seen at sea. There were hundreds of books to read & check out as well as a fully stocked game room with backgammon, new sets of cards, and plenty of other board games.

These game rooms also make a great place to quietly work on your laptop, as they have full-size tables where you can spread out and get something done (even if you ARE on vacation)!

The pools & sun decks on the NCL Sun

The pool level was a pleasant surprise with two relatively large pools connected in the middle by 4 covered jacuzzi-style hot tubs. There were plenty of chairs on multiple decks overlooking the pool and rarely was there a problem getting a good poolside spot.

For sun worshippers, there was a HUGE number of outdoor spaces with loungers throughout the ship from wide swaths of decking to little private nooks.

Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship Pool Deck

The Sun Casino is a decent size given how the ship is smaller. There are dozens of slots and video games in two sections as well as gaming tables down the center of the casino. What’s a bit mind-boggling is the fact there is only one roulette table in the entire casino and it is clearly the game everyone is interested in playing. It was consistently packed while all other tables were nearly empty. Common sense would say add more roulette tables.

The slots ranged from penny slots to machines where you could easily spend $10 per spin. Unlike on the larger ships, there wasn’t really a buzz about the casino but it was sufficient to keep people occupied and donating money to NCL during the cruise. Hardcore gamblers will likely be disappointed.

Another unfortunate bit about the casino is the smoking situation. It’s such a small space where smoking is allowed, it’s almost impossible to function as a non-smoker. It feels like the smokers on the ship make use of the casino as a smoking parlor rather than going to other designated smoking areas making the air quality in such a small space, let’s just say, less than ideal.

The Mandara Spa

The NCL Sun has a relatively small spa facility but lacks the thermal spa suite that the newer ships have. However, for people who enjoy the use of a sauna and steam room, the Sun has dedicated men’s and women’s locker rooms each with a dry sauna and a steam room which can be used when receiving a treatment or by purchasing a daily or full cruise pass. Approximately $29/day for use of the sauna & steam room or $149 for the duration of a 10-day cruise may seem excessive for most people, but at least it’s available for those passengers who really want this feature. (cost may vary based on itinerary and cruise length)

Other services offered at the spa are as expected including various massage therapies, acupuncture, facials, and salon services (hair, mani/pedi, etc)

We’d try another voyage on the Norwegian Sun, if the price was right. We found the food quite good overall, the service better than expected and even though the cabins were dated, they were comfortable.

For the right price and right itinerary, the Norwegian Sun is a great value!

Thank you for this detailed review. May I know how much gratuity per person is expected on cruise lines? I did not know we had to pay for gratuities. I thought it was already included in the cruise cost that we are paying. I am hoping to book a 19 day cruise with the Sun for Panama Canal.

Hi Jacklyn, for NCL – the Daily gratuities are charged at $16 per day and more for The Haven. You can see more about the tips and gratuities here on this article!

Smoking in casino Not so good ! I guess smokers are regular gamblers Hard to separate But could have a smoking room Like the cigar room ! Other wise this will disgust the non smokers being around this ! !

Worst Trip Ever

Mar 30th, 2024

Of all the cruises that we have done, this was by far the absolute worst experience we have ever had. Our friends booked with us, and they had never cruised before. They were very disappointed in their first cruising experience. I am so embarrassed and ashamed for Norwegian Cruise Lines!!!

Not the vacation we was hoping for!!!

Overall, very disappointed in this ship and overall vacation. I have always been true to Norwegian but going forward that might change.

Not The Best, Not The Worst

Overall, it was just okay. The ship had issues with sewage, amount of service staff at the bars, and a slight lack of onboard activities, particularly for the cost of some activities.

It was okay

The ship was freezing cold. Many people were wearing jackets The food was not very good and it was same every day. There were not many shows or things to do like on every other ship I have been on. No DJ on the upper deck and no dance club or area. Had lots of boring trivia. Had one deck with 5 hot tubs and 2 pools and they were filled with children. No adults could get in the hot tubs. All other cruise lines are better and offer more things to do on the boat and better food.

Will not sail on Norwegian again. It has the basic elements of a cruise (clean cabin, food and entertainment) but missing many extras.

OK, BUT.....There are better cruise lines (Holland)

Norwegian failed to give us our complimentary room upgrade (as Diamond Lattitude members) which we had requested. Told us no rooms available and to submit a cash request which they accepted. Cruise Next will lie to you and claim you'll get the upgrade free, but Corporate Norwegian won't grant it. Company is based on a series of marketing lies and misconceptions. Don't fall for it.

Review: Is the Norwegian Sun a Good Ship to Cruise Alaska?

' src=

If you’re considering taking a cruise on the Norwegian Sun Ship but aren’t sure it’s the right cruise ship for you, we’re here to help. We recently spent ten amazing nights on the ship, exploring all its amenities and dining options while sailing through Alaska’s Inside Passage. In this thorough Norwegian Sun review, we’ll share our personal experiences, tips, and pros and cons to help you determine if the Norwegian Sun is the perfect cruise ship for you.

Norwegian Sun Review – Our Experiences on the Ship

An honest, unbiased review of norwegian sun ship.

Before we dive deeper into our experiences and insights, it’s important to clarify that this is not a sponsored article. We personally purchased the cruise to Alaska from Seattle on the Norwegian Sun. All additional costs, both onboard and off-board—including Alaska shore excursions at each port of call—were covered by us. You’re about to read our honest opinions and thoughts about this ship, free from any external influence.

Why did we decide on a cruise to Alaska on Norwegian Sun?

You might be wondering why we decided on a cruise to Alaska on the Norwegian Sun. The answer is simple: the quality-to-price ratio was too good to pass up. When researching cruise options for our next Alaska adventure through Inside Passage, the Norwegian Sun offered luxury and amenities far exceeding its price tag.

But it wasn’t just the Alaska cruise price that caught our eye. We’re not fans of crowds, and the idea of sailing on a mega-ship with thousands of other passengers didn’t appeal to us. The Norwegian Sun, with its mid-size capacity, offered a more intimate experience without skimping on amenities. This cruise ship perfectly fits us, especially since we appreciate peace.

We knew we’d made the right choice when we stepped aboard. The ship’s size made it easy to navigate, and we never felt overwhelmed by crowds of people. We could always find a quiet corner to relax, whether a cozy nook in the library or a secluded spot on the top deck.

Moreover, we didn’t worry about crowds of fellow passengers during Alaska’s peak cruise season at ports of call.

Agnes standing in front of Norwegian Sun cruise ship.

And let’s talk about the entertainment and activities. We’re not the type to need constant stimulation, so the range of offerings on the Norwegian Sun suits us. We enjoyed a comedy show, live music concerts, dining culinary journey, pool, and spa.

In short, our ten nights and ten days on the Norwegian Sun were filled with moments that make vacations memorable.

Our Tip: This article focuses on the Norwegian Sun cruise ship, its amenities, entertainment, things to do on a ship, and whom it suits most. But also read our detailed 10-day Alaska cruise review , where we describe our cruise, all the ports we visited day-by-day, excursions we have taken, and much more.

Introduction: Setting Sail to Alaska with the Norwegian Sun

What makes the norwegian sun cruise ship unique.

When it comes to cruising, the Norwegian Sun is in a league of its own, offering a blend of features that make it stand out from the crowd. Let’s break down some of the elements that contribute to its uniqueness:

  • Intimate Yet Spacious: One of the first things you’ll notice about the Norwegian Sun is its size. It’s not overwhelmingly large, but it’s not cramped either. This mid-sized vessel offers a perfect balance, allowing for a more intimate experience without sacrificing the amenities you’d expect from a larger ship.
  • Diverse Dining Options: If you’re a foodie, the Norwegian Sun is a dream come true. From Italian to Asian cuisine, the ship offers a culinary journey worldwide. And let’s not forget the Freestyle Dining option, which lets you dine when you want, where you want—no fixed schedules.
  • Top-Notch Entertainment: Whether you’re into Broadway-style shows, live music, or comedy, the Norwegian Sun covers you. The quality of the performances is good, making each night a new adventure in entertainment.
  • Unique Destinations: While many cruise ships stick to popular routes, the Norwegian Sun offers unique itineraries, including less-visited ports with a more authentic experience, like the pretty new Icy Straight Point.
  • Exceptional Customer Service: Last but not least, the crew on the Norwegian Sun goes above and beyond to make your journey unforgettable. The service is top-notch, from the attentive waitstaff to the perfect housekeeping team.
  • Eco-Friendly Practices: In today’s world, sustainability matters. The Norwegian Sun has taken steps to reduce its environmental impact, including waste reduction programs and energy-efficient technologies.

Overall – Is the Norwegian Sun a Good Ship?

So, is the Norwegian Sun a good ship? We’ll get into the specifics later, but here’s our quick take: If you’re looking for a cruise to Alaska that offers a blend of relaxation and adventure, the Norwegian Sun checks many boxes. However, like any experience, it’s not without drawbacks, which we’ll also delve into.

Before we set sail into the details, here are some quick nuggets of what we picked up during our journey:

  • Tip : The top deck is the place for the best sunset views.
  • Pro : The food is out of this world, tasty and fresh, not only at the specialty restaurants but in each restaurant on the ship. The same goes for beverages, including alcohol.
  • Con : The Wi-Fi can be spotty, so plan accordingly if you need to stay connected.

Norwegian Sun Ship Specifications: The Nuts and Bolts

Size and capacity of norwegian sun cruise ship.

When it comes to choosing a cruise ship, size matters. The Norwegian Sun balances between being large enough to offer a wide range of amenities and small enough to provide an intimate experience. The ship has a gross tonnage of approximately 78,309 and spans 848 feet in length.

With 12 passenger decks, it has a maximum passenger capacity of around 1,936 and a crew of about 906. This mid-sized capacity ensures that you won’t feel lost in a sea of people but will still have plenty of opportunities for socializing and activities.

Year Built and Renovations

The Norwegian Sun was originally built in 2001, making it one of the older ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) fleet. However, don’t let its age fool you. The ship underwent a significant refurbishment in 2018 as part of Norwegian’s “Norwegian Edge” program. This multi-million dollar renovation touched almost every aspect of the vessel, from staterooms and public areas to dining venues and entertainment spaces.

During the renovation, the ship received updated furnishings, new decor, and technological upgrades to enhance the guest experience. For instance, the staterooms now feature modern amenities like USB charging ports, flat-screen TVs, and updated bathroom fixtures. Public areas like the atrium and pool deck have also been refreshed, offering a more contemporary look and feel.

The renovation also introduced new dining and entertainment options, ensuring the Norwegian Sun remains competitive with newer ships regarding amenities and guest experiences.

A Close Encounter: Norwegian Sun and the Iceberg Incident of 2022

On June 25, 2022, the Norwegian Sun made headlines when it had a close encounter with a small iceberg on the way to the Hubbard Glacier. While no one was injured and the ship sustained no significant damage, the incident served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of cruising in glacial waters. Following the incident, the ship safely docked in Juneau, the capital of Alaska, without further issues. However, Norwegian Cruise Line had to cut short the sailing and canceled the Sun’s next cruise from Seattle .

Passengers who had been on board the ship were given a complete reimbursement for their trip, along with a credit for a future cruise equal to the full cost of their original fare. Those who had bookings for the June 30 sailing received their money back in full, as well as a future cruise voucher worth half of the fare they had paid. Additionally, they were offered $300 per individual to cover any airline cancellation or modification fees.

Though minor, the incident underscores the importance of choosing a cruise line with a strong safety record and experienced crew, especially when navigating the challenging waters of Alaska’s Inside Passage . The successful docking in Juneau also demonstrated the crew’s professionalism and the ship’s resilience. It added an element of adventure and a story to tell, reminding us that cruising in Alaska comes with its own set of unique experiences.

Owner’s Suites

The crème de la crème of accommodations, these suites offer multiple rooms, top-of-the-line furnishings, and even a private hot tub on your balcony.

Exclusive Amenities

Suite guests enjoy exclusive amenities, including access to a private lounge and dining area, priority reservations for dining and entertainment, and personalized concierge services.

Whether you opt for a standard cabin or splurge on a luxury suite, the Norwegian Sun offers a range of options to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

Our Choice: The Inside Cabin

Budget was a critical factor in our decision to opt for an inside cabin. We wanted to allocate more funds to Alaska shore excursions to fully immerse ourselves in the Inside Passage’s ports of call. Knowing that we’d spend minimal time in the cabin—primarily for sleep—and the rest exploring the ship’s amenities and entertainment, the inside stateroom met our needs perfectly.

A Note for Those with Mobility Concerns

For elderly guests, those with mobility issues, or couples who want to spend time romantically, we highly recommend considering a stateroom with an outside window or balcony. The Norwegian Sun sails along some truly breathtaking landscapes, and we had the incredible opportunity to witness whales, waterfalls, and glaciers right from the ship. It’s an experience not to be missed.

It is worth emphasizing, however, that there are many places on the ship from which you can admire the views. So if budget is essential – you don’t have to overpay. Great places to watch the sea are located around the famous Atrium and in our favorite Observation Lounge and Sports Bar.

Budget-Friendly Alaska Cruise Adventure

By choosing the most affordable Alaska cruise package, we also aimed to demonstrate that an Alaskan cruise doesn’t have to break the bank. We’re passionate about Alaska, and we wanted to show both ourselves and our blog readers that a budget-friendly approach is possible.

Especially when exploring the Inside Passage—an area dominated by islands and limited road access—a cruise can offer a cost-effective and convenient way to see the sights. Accessibility at Norwegian Sun Ship: Inclusive Cruising

Accessible cabins and facilities.

Traveling with mobility challenges can be daunting, but the Norwegian Sun aims to make the cruise experience accessible and enjoyable for everyone. The ship offers a range of accessible cabins designed to accommodate guests with various needs. These cabins are more spacious than standard rooms and feature wider doorways to allow for wheelchair or scooter access. The bathrooms are also equipped with grab bars, a roll-in shower, and other features to make them more accessible.

But accessibility on the Norwegian Sun goes beyond just the cabins. We liked how the ship is adapted to people with disabilities and seniors with mobility problems. The ship itself is designed with accessibility in mind:

  • Elevators: All passenger decks are accessible by elevators that are equipped with Braille signage and audio cues.
  • Public Areas: Most public areas, including dining venues, entertainment spaces, and restrooms, are wheelchair accessible.
  • Pool and Spa: The pool area features a lift, allowing guests with mobility issues to enjoy a swim.

Moreover, it’s worth mentioning that Norwegian Cruise Line departs from Pier 66 in Seattle cruise port , located in downtown Seattle and easily accessible from other parts of the city and the airport.

Services for Guests with Disabilities

The Norwegian Sun doesn’t just stop at accessible facilities; it also offers a range of services to assist guests with disabilities:

  • Assistance at Embarkation and Disembarkation: Staff are available to assist with getting on and off the ship.
  • Wheelchair Assistance: Wheelchairs are available for use on board, particularly for embarkation and disembarkation.
  • Visual and Hearing Impairments: For guests with visual or hearing impairments, the ship offers services like sign language interpreters upon request, as well as Braille signage and auditory aids.
  • Dietary Needs: For guests with special dietary requirements, the dining staff is more than willing to accommodate, whether it’s gluten-free, kosher, or other specific dietary needs. I appreciate it very much because I am lactose intolerant and gluten-free. The selection of dishes and products was so vast and diverse that I had no problems following the diet.

The Norwegian Sun takes pride in offering an inclusive cruising experience, ensuring that all guests, regardless of their physical challenges, can enjoy their time on board to the fullest.

Our Tip: Check out details about accessible cruising on the official NCL website , which provides information and a Guest Special Needs Request Form.

Freestyle Cruising: The Freedom to Choose

The concept explained.

One of the standout features that drew us to the Norwegian Sun for our Alaska adventure was Freestyle Cruising. But what is it exactly? Simply put, Freestyle Cruising gives you the liberty to tailor your vacation just how you like it. Forget about rigid dining schedules, mandatory formal nights, or any other constraints traditional cruises might impose. With Freestyle Cruising, you’re in the driver’s seat. You can go elegantly dressed or in sporty and comfortable clothes. The choice is yours, depending on your needs.

Freestyle Cruising allowed us to find that perfect balance between our adventurous nature and the desire for some luxury and relaxation. It’s one of the reasons why our Alaska cruise on the Norwegian Sun was such a memorable experience.

How It Enhances the Dining Experience

We’re adventure-seekers. Our past escapades in Alaska have included road trips, nights in tents, and stays in campers. So, the idea of being confined to a dinner schedule or a dress code didn’t sit well with us. That’s where Freestyle Cruising came in as a game-changer.

  • Flexible Dining Times: We could dine whenever we felt like it, allowing us to fit meals around our adventure-packed days.
  • A Smorgasbord of Options: The Norwegian Sun offers a plethora of dining venues, from casual buffets to upscale specialty restaurants. This meant we could go from eating in our hiking gear during the day to enjoying a romantic dinner in the evening.
  • Dress to Your Comfort: This was important for us. We could wear our sneakers, sweatshirts, and jeans during the day and then switch to something more elegant for a date night without feeling out of place.
  • Personalized Service: The flexibility also extends to the service. Whether we had special dietary needs or were looking for the perfect wine to pair with our meal, the staff was always accommodating.
  • Ideal for Adventure-Seekers: If you’re like us, loving the thrill of adventure but also appreciating a good meal and some relaxation, Freestyle Cruising is perfect. It allows you to balance your adventurous spirit with moments of luxury and indulgence.

Norwegian Sun Dress Code: What to Wear?

Regarding attire, the Norwegian Sun embraces a relaxed dress code in line with its Freestyle Cruising concept. During the day, casual wear like shorts, leggings, t-shirts, or fleece is perfectly acceptable. In the evening, the dress code varies by venue. While the main dining rooms and specialty restaurants may require “smart casual” attire, such as collared shirts for men and dresses or nice pants for women, no strict formal dress code is enforced.

Our Tip: For those planning an Alaska cruise, we highly recommend checking out our detailed Alaska cruise packing list with a PDF checklist .

Cafes, Bars, and Lounges: Sip and Savor

  • Java Cafe: Perfect for coffee enthusiasts, this cafe offers a range of specialty coffees along with pastries and light snacks.

Our Take: We found the variety of cafes, bars, and lounges to be a delightful addition to our dining experience on the ship. Our favorites are Observation Lounge, Champagne Bar, Topsiders Bar, and Bliss Ultra Lounge.

The Atrium is a stunning open space that spans from the 5th to the 11th deck. Four glass elevators shoot through the area, adding a touch of modern elegance. It is a central hub for various activities and provides easy access to many of the ship’s amenities, bars, and restaurants.

  • Stardust Theater: This grand venue hosts a range of performances, from Broadway-style musicals to magic shows and comedy acts. With its state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems, the Stardust Theater provides a truly immersive experience.
  • Live Music: Throughout the ship, you’ll find live music performances catering to various musical tastes. Whether it’s a jazz trio in the lounge or a band by the pool, there’s something for everyone.

If you want to continue the fun into the late hours, the Norwegian Sun also has some options.

  • Dazzles Nightclub: For those who love to dance, Dazzles Nightclub offers a vibrant atmosphere with a great mix of music. The DJ keeps the dance floor lively, from classic hits to modern beats.

Whether you’re a fan of live performances or prefer a quiet evening with a good drink, the Norwegian Sun offers a diverse range of entertainment options that will keep you engaged from day to night.

Shopping On Board

The Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship offers a range of boutiques and duty-free shops for those who love to shop. Whether you’re looking for designer fashion, jewelry, or souvenirs to take home, you’ll find it all here. It’s a great way to spend some leisure time and perhaps find that perfect item you’ve been searching for.

Art Exhibitions and Auctions

For art enthusiasts, the Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship offers a unique cultural experience with its onboard art exhibitions. These exhibitions feature a variety of artworks, including great contemporary pieces. Moreover, the ship hosts art auctions where you can bid on your favorite pieces. It’s an opportunity to appreciate art and own a piece that speaks to you.

Enrichment Activities

  • Healthy Lifestyle Lectures: If you’re interested in wellness, the ship offers lectures on a healthy lifestyle, covering nutrition and mental well-being. These sessions provide valuable insights and tips on maintaining a balanced life, even while you’re on vacation.
  • Culinary Shows and Workshops: For foodies, the Norwegian Sun offers culinary shows where chefs demonstrate their skills and share cooking tips. If you’re keen to get hands-on, you can also participate in culinary workshops, learning how to prepare various dishes from the experts themselves.
  • Alcohol Tastings: If you’re a connoisseur of fine wines, spirits, or beers, the ship offers alcohol tastings where you can sample a range of beverages and learn about their origins, flavors, and ideal food pairings.

Tech and Connectivity: Always Online

Internet cafe and wi-fi packages.

Staying connected while cruising on the Norwegian Sun is possible, but it has some cons. The ship offers an Internet Cafe where you can access desktop computers to check emails or browse the web. Additionally, various Wi-Fi packages are available for purchase, catering to different needs, whether you want to check social media or need to work online.

Mobile App and Onboard Technology

The Norwegian Sun also features a user-friendly mobile app that allows you to plan your day, book excursions, and even make restaurant reservations. The app is well-designed and easy to navigate, making it a convenient tool for enhancing your cruise experience.

Our Experience with Connectivity

Our cruise package included 150 minutes of free onboard Wi-Fi, which sounds great on paper. However, the reality was a bit different. The Wi-Fi quality left much to be desired; it was slow and often unstable. This wasn’t entirely surprising to us, given our extensive travel experience in Alaska. Connectivity issues are pretty standard in this remote state, especially when sailing through the Inside Passage, surrounded by islands and glaciers.

A Word of Caution: If you plan to work online during your cruise or require a super-fast connection, you might face challenges. While the app is easy to use and well thought out, the Wi-Fi itself may not meet your expectations for speed and reliability.

Family Amenities: From Toddlers to Teens

Splash academy and kids’ programs.

The Norwegian Sun offers a basic range of amenities for families with children. The Splash Academy is the ship’s primary kids’ program, catering to children aged 3 to 12. Activities range from arts and crafts to simple games entertaining little ones.

Entourage Teen Club and Adult-Only Spaces

For teenagers, the ship features the Entourage Teen Club, a space designed to give teens a place to hang out, play video games, and socialize. The vessel offers adult-only areas like the Spice H2O lounge and the Mandara Spa for parents seeking alone time.

Our Look on Family Amenities

In our opinion, the Norwegian Sun provides basic amenities for families. While the Splash Academy and Entourage Teen Club offer some entertainment for younger passengers, they don’t compare to the extensive facilities found on larger cruise ships. For example, ships like the Norwegian Bliss or the Norwegian Encore feature massive entertainment centers with laser tag arenas, go-kart tracks, and expansive water parks.

If you’re a demanding customer looking to provide your children with various entertainment options, the Norwegian Sun may not be the best choice. The ship’s family amenities are relatively limited compared to what you would find on larger, more family-focused ships.

Service and Maintenance: A Closer Look

Cleanliness and upkeep.

One of the first things we noticed about the Norwegian Sun was its impeccable cleanliness. From the staterooms to the common areas, it’s evident that the crew takes great pride in maintaining the ship. Regular cleaning schedules and attention to detail create a sanitary and comfortable environment.

Exceptional Staff

The staff on the Norwegian Sun go above and beyond to ensure a pleasant experience for all passengers. Whether it’s the room attendants remembering your name or the waitstaff accommodating special dietary needs, personalized service is commendable.

Customer Support Stands

For any questions or concerns, the ship features customer support stands that are well-staffed and readily available. These stands are strategically located to provide easy access whether you need help with dinner table reservations, shore excursion bookings, or any other inquiries.

Dinner and Shore Excursion Reservations

Making dinner or shore excursion reservations is a breeze thanks to the efficient customer service. The staff know the various options available and can provide recommendations tailored to your preferences. This makes planning your days and evenings on the ship a hassle-free experience.

Our Tip: From our experience, we recommend booking your shore excursion in advance. Check out our suggestions for the best shore excursions in each Alaska port of call.

Support for Shore Excursions

When it comes to shore excursions, the Norwegian Sun offers excellent support. Detailed briefings are provided before each tour, and the staff are always on hand to assist with any last-minute changes or requirements. This support level ensures you can maximize your time exploring various ports.

Freestyle Daily: Your Daily Guide

One feature we particularly appreciated was the Freestyle Daily magazine, delivered to our cabin each evening. This in-cabin publication was a treasure trove of information, making planning our next day’s activities easy. It included the weather forecast, highlighted attractions and excursions at the upcoming port, and even outlined onboard activities for sea days.

Freestyle Daily had all the key information we needed to make the most of our time on the Norwegian Sun, from disembarkation and return times to a detailed timetable of the ship’s entertainment. It was a convenient and thoughtful touch that improved our overall cruise experience.

Who Is the Norwegian Sun Best For?

Ideal for adult couples, seniors and retirees.

The Norwegian Sun offers a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere than larger, bustling ships. This makes it ideal for adult couples seeking a romantic getaway or seniors seeking a peaceful cruise experience. The ship’s range of dining options, adult-only spaces, and wellness amenities cater well to a mature audience.

Suitable for People with Limited Mobility

One of the standout features of the Norwegian Sun is its accessibility. The ship offers a range of accessible cabins and facilities, making it a suitable choice for people with limited mobility. From wider doorways to ramp access, the vessel is designed to be inclusive for all.

Additionally, the smaller ship is a significant advantage for older adults or those with limited mobility. A smaller deck layout facilitates more efficient and quick movement, making it easier to get from one point to another without much hassle.

A Note on Docking Locations: One downside is that the Norwegian Sun sometimes docks a bit further from downtown areas in some ports. While free shuttle services and assistant support are provided during disembarking or returning, this can be inconvenient. For instance, in Ketchikan, the ship docked 7 miles from downtown, requiring an additional free shuttle ride. In Sitka, the ship anchored offshore, requiring passengers to use tenders to reach land. While staff assistance is available, these situations might pose some challenges for those with limited mobility.

Suitable for Solo Travelers

The Norwegian Sun also caters to solo travelers. With its range of activities and entertainment options, solo travelers will find plenty of opportunities to socialize and make new friends. The smaller ship makes it easier to navigate, adding to the convenience for those traveling alone.

Our Take on Who Would Enjoy Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship

In our experience, the Norwegian Sun is best suited for mature adults, seniors, and those with limited mobility. While it does offer some family amenities, they are relatively basic compared to what you’d find on larger ships.

However, we feel that the Norwegian Sun may not cater to the requirements of younger adults, especially those between the ages of 20 and 30 who seek thrilling entertainment. The ship’s relaxed environment and restricted late-night activities may not match the choices of this group.

Therefore, if you’re an adult couple, a senior, a group of friends, or a solo traveler looking for a more relaxed and intimate cruise experience, the Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship could be an excellent choice for you.

Agnes and Chris on front of Norwegian Sun cruise ship in Seattle.

Comparing the Norwegian Sun to Other Ships

Versus larger norwegian ships.

The Norwegian Sun offers a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere, which can be both an advantage and a limitation. Unlike larger ships like the Norwegian Bliss or the Norwegian Encore, the Sun doesn’t feature expansive entertainment centers with amenities like laser tag arenas, go-kart tracks, or giant water parks. While this makes for a quieter, more laid-back experience, it also means fewer options for families and young adults seeking high-energy activities.

Our Take : If you’re looking for a cruise with a wide range of entertainment options and amenities, you might find larger Norwegian ships more to your liking. However, the Norwegian Sun could be better if you prefer a more intimate setting with fewer crowds.

Versus More Modern Norwegian Ships

Concerning modernity, the Norwegian Sun falls short compared to newer ships in the fleet, such as the Norwegian Joy or the Norwegian Escape. These newer ships offer more advanced technology, including interactive touchscreens for more straightforward navigation and state-of-the-art entertainment systems. Additionally, they often feature more contemporary interior designs and updated stateroom amenities.

Our Take: If you value cutting-edge technology and modern aesthetics, you might find newer Norwegian ships more appealing. However, the Norwegian Sun offers a classic cruise experience that still provides a range of amenities and activities to keep you entertained.

Norwegian Sun Versus Larger Ships.

Norwegian Sun Review – Pros and Cons

Highlights of the norwegian sun cruise ship.

  • Intimate Atmosphere: One of the standout features of the Norwegian Sun is its smaller size, which offers a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. This is ideal for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger cruise ships.
  • Accessibility: The ship is well-designed for people with limited mobility, featuring accessible cabins and facilities. Its smaller size also makes it easier to navigate.
  • Freestyle Cruising: The ship’s Freestyle Cruising concept allows for a flexible dining experience, letting you eat when and where you want. This was one of the reasons we chose the Norwegian Sun for our Alaska cruise, as it perfectly aligned with our adventure-seeking lifestyle.
  • Dining Options: With its Freestyle Cruising concept, the Norwegian Sun offers a variety of dining options that cater to different tastes and preferences.
  • Adult-Only Spaces: The ship provides adult-only areas like the Spice H2O lounge and the Mandara Spa, allowing for peaceful relaxation away from the younger crowd.

Areas for Improvement

  • Wi-Fi Quality: Although our package included 150 minutes of free Wi-Fi, the quality was subpar, making it challenging for those who need a reliable internet connection.
  • Remote Docking Locations: The ship sometimes docks further away from downtown areas, requiring additional transportation. This can be an inconvenience, especially for those with limited mobility.
  • Basic Family Amenities: While the ship offers family-friendly amenities like the Splash Academy, these are relatively basic compared to what you’d find on larger, more family-focused ships.

Sunset over Norwegian Sun.

Conclusion: Is the Norwegian Sun the Right Choice for You?

Summary of key points.

The Norwegian Sun Cruise Ship offers an intimate and relaxed atmosphere, making it an ideal choice for adult couples, seniors, and solo travelers. Its smaller size makes it more navigable, especially for those with limited mobility. The ship excels in personalized service, cleanliness, and dining options thanks to its Freestyle Cruising concept. However, it may fall short for younger adults looking for high-energy entertainment and families seeking extensive amenities for children.

Final Recommendations

If you’re looking for a more laid-back cruise experience with excellent service, the Norwegian Sun could be a great fit. Its smaller size and fewer crowds make it a peaceful choice for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of larger ships. However, if you’re a younger adult seeking intense entertainment or a family requiring a wide range of amenities for children, you might find larger or more modern Norwegian ships more to your liking.

For those concerned about accessibility, the ship’s design and services make it a suitable option, although some docking locations may pose challenges. The Norwegian Sun offers a balanced cruise experience catering to a specific demographic. Your enjoyment will largely depend on what you’re looking to get out of your cruise.

Is the Norwegian Sun a Good Ship for Cruising Alaska?

If you’re considering a cruise to Alaska, the Norwegian Sun offers a unique experience. Its smaller size allows for a more intimate connection with the stunning Alaskan landscapes. The ship’s Freestyle Cruising concept also aligns well with the adventurous spirit of an Alaskan cruise, allowing you the freedom to explore both on and off the ship. However, be prepared for some logistical challenges, such as remote docking locations, which may require additional transportation.

Just booked the sun for Jan 21 but having second thoughts after reading many bad reviews. Trying to decide if I should cancel. I know when considering reviews one should toss out the best and worse but ive never seen so many negative reviews. Why didn't I check before I booked????? Can anyone share some positive views on the Sun?

I can't imagine why anyone would post something negative .. or at least seriously negative, about the Sun. She is a beautiful and very unique ship in the NCL fleet. We loved being on board her and cannot wait until our next cruise on her which is a little under a year from now. We could have booked any ship or any line we wanted to, and we chose the Sun. You made a good decision and I hope you enjoy your cruise.

3,000+ Club

We took our first cruise ever on the Sun in January and weren't disappointed. She is a great size and a very pretty and clean ship. We had a great time and will probably book her again for our next cruise after this Jan.

Coastalbreezes

Just got off the Sun on Saturday and really enjoyed my cruise. Will be posting a full review later but she was a fantastic ship with one of the best crews I have ever encountered!

I loved the Sun so much I rebooked for 2013... It can't get here soon enough.

Next to the Pearl, the Sun is our favorite ship. In fact, we have her scheduled again in Jan. This is about the forth posting lately where someone has described reviews about a particular ship as , "mostly bad", "horrible", "nothing good said", etc. I read these boards frequently and just do not see all of that. What I do see are "good", "great", "can't wait to sail her again", "wow, beautiful ship, wonderful crew", and so forth. The only way you will really know and be convinced is to go sail on her and decide for yourself. If you wish to look at the Sun, here's a bunch of pics from about one year ago.

I enjoyed viewing your photos. I was on the Sun in April of this year, and found it to be a great ship. It is small enough to be somewhat easy to navigate, yet large enough not to be crowded. Perhaps those who have given negative reviews expected a more "luxurious" ship.

If you are reading the review section of CC you need to pay attention to which cruises have gotten bad reviews in the past month or so. I checked yesterday, only 2 were what most of us would call "bad". One was a 3 day cruise which is very different from a longer cruise. We have been on 4 or 5 short cruises, none measure up to 7 day or longer ones. The other negative one was based mainly on, they couldn't bring booze on board: no line allows it anymore and she griped about Jamaica. I don't think you can blame a cruise line for a port that you don't like. Oh, she also complained about the size of her lobster tail and shrimp. This might seem legit, but all one has to do is ask you another one...I would take both of those reviews as sour grapes. In fact I am a little surprised to see you posting negative thoughts since you just booked. Maybe NCL isn't the line for you. If you are expecting to have a bad cruise you most likely will.

We will be cruising her for the third time in Feb. If she was so bad, why would we do this?

While I haven't been on the Sun for a couple years, she still stands out in my memory as maybe my favorite NCL ship. The crew was outstanding, the ship just the right size, and the casino was the friendliest (in general) I have ever played on a ship. While I can't really help you make your decision, I would suggest that quite often, any cruise is what you make of it. Don't go in with poor expectations or you might find yourself looking to match them! Have a great time whatever you decide!

Returned off of the SUN Oct.30 2010. With all the above post, we can't wait for our next tour with her and the best crew. Dec.2012 Southern Carr. 11 days of the sweet life and we're only in a balcony. Go with the attitude of a good cruise and you will have a great cruise...

I would not call anything about the Sun bad...it is a nicely appointed smaller ship with large rooms and plenty of storage...One of the shows I did not like, but that is personal preference after all...not everyone's tastes are the same.

Our cabin steward was excellent and received the highest tip we have ever given a steward...

The crew was great...I did find the service in the main dining rooms a little slow, but it could have been the hour that we chose to dine...it seemed to be a very popular time to eat...

Would I go on the Sun again? Probably would....is she my most favorite ship in the fleet...she is not....I am partial to the Pearl and Dawn...

When I first went on the Dawn, it was my first NCL cruise ever, I stumbled accross cruise critic and was very disappointed in the reviews that I read..I was almost ready to change the cruise but intrigued by the idea of freestyle....the Dawn was great and I am sailing her for the 4th time...

While I love all my cruises, there things on each ship that are not perfect...they are just not important when it comes to judging a vacation in its entirety...

Exactly! You have to read through all the reviews to see what people complained about. Sometimes a bad review can be just about one thing and sometimes it is nothing what so ever to do with the ship. When I booked the Sun we had never been on a cruise and my only experience with NCL was that a former co-worked had recommended the line. I found cc then started looking at the reviews (after we had booked). I was afraid that our first cruise was going to be a less than great experience and I'd never get DH on one again but we all (including DS 18) loved the ship and the crew.

Love you attitude and I think you hit the nail on the head when you say the Dawn and pearl are your favorites: the Dawn cause it was your first NCL cruise. I think the reason I put the Sun so high on our list, it was our first "freestyle" cruise. We also like the Pearl and the Jewel.

STARFISH*4

my first cruise on the SUN was last December when she "broke" had mechanical problems that could have ruined the whole first week cruise as some passengers let it, but not us we had a WONDERFUL TIME-even BETTER the second week...it is what you make of it ...the SUN was a GOOD SHIP...LOVE her HULL art...the crew was GREAT!!

GO with a POSITIVE MIND on any ship that helps to have a GOOD time right there......dont BELIEVE all the NEGATIVE you read cos for every neg one there is a POSITIVE!

and some of the NEGATIVES are just plain 'petty' and complain about every "little" thing!!

32 days will be sailing on the SUN for another B2B and cant wait and next year 3 weeks on her!!

there are ALOT of repeat cruisers that just LOVE the SUN;)

Thanks everyone for the good vides. Just FYI the reviews I read were from multiple sites not just cc

but were they pretty much from the same cruisers? Sometimes people will get on every website they can find, sometimes they are family members or friends that choose to blast away, just don't put too much into what you are reading. If you do, I can guarantee you the cruise will be bad cause you are looking for the flaws.

Go and enjoy yourself...it doesn't matter what other people say...you are the master of your vacation...

I have posted my review in the review section . I had a good time but 19 of the 20 cruises I have gone on ,starting in the 80'S were better than this one .Not much bang for your buck. I was on Norwegian 8 years ago and swore I never would come back ,THIS TIME I REALLY MEAN IT !

Thanks for your enlightening comment. I think you just proved the point of every other poster on this thread.

have booked w/4 others for next year..........I can find as many good reviews as bad for the Sun............looking forward to finding out myself. As long as the food is decent, cabins comfy............I will be happy. But the cruise is what you make it...........all of us getting together for 10 glorious days in the caribbean.

We are bound to make it a fun time regardless!!! :)

Please come back after your cruise & let us know how it went!! :)

Yes, we all have an opinion and I just read yours. I guess I am having a problem with your low rating based on your abbreviated explanation of what you liked and didn't like. Did you ask for more salt? I guess bad service can come anytime but we have never had a problem with bad service in a specialty dining room on any line, including NCL.Well, I take that back, once, but that was a few years ago. You mention how few were in the specialty dining room, we just got off another line and the same thing: for whatever reason they are never full.

I wish someone was around to ask for salt, the severs all left as soon as they delivered the food . Most of the time only people eating were in the dinning room . 12 people total,6 waiters ,bus boys, all male came out to sing happy birthday for someone. In the 1 1/2 hour we were there no diners came in or left, the other 3 tables came in at 7pm and we came in at 7:15 because they were sold out at 7 with 10 people . I am not making this up it is what I was told when I booked it a 9AM that morning. We had 3 servers bring us diffrent.

I based my ratings on 1 - 5 . this means 3 is avarage (what you paid for)4 is good,5 is great,5+ is fantastic. 2 is below what I believe a vacation that cost more than $2000.00. I have gone on 3 vacations and 2 cruises in the last 2 years that overall were fantastic to blow me away fantastic . This was not one of them, our cabin person was fantastic and what I think most waiters on other cruise lines strive to be so they can earn the tips. I know many people skip out on the tips the last day ,Many people don't show up for dinner. As on this cruise I gave double tip to cabin person, And sent a note to housekeeping to let them know how happy I was . I did not complain to managment about dining room service although some near me did . They already know what is going on and probably don't care . You can look back 2 years and see complaints about buffet layout, They do nothing to try and fix it. And it is only my opinion and yes I do write when I love my trips also, this just wasn't one I liked.

I am sorry you had such a bad experience, this is not normal, but anything can happen. As for the buffet set up, I never questioned your opinion of that: yes, it is awful. On our last cruise on the Sun we ended up just eating breakfast most mornings in Las Rambles. The buffet was too conjected, but the quality and selection in the buffet is great compared to other lines we have cruised. We just got off another line and the buffet, not only was set up poorly like the Sun the quality was bad.

NCL Sun review with comparison

Naismith

Cool Cruiser

I am posting this to both the NCL and HAL boards, since I am doing a comparison review.

As background, we are not dedicated cruisers.   We have been on five lines, and might do a cruise every other year or so; most of our vacations are land-based self-driven road trips.   And the cruises are based on itinerary not ship.

As fate and deals worked out, we were on Nieuw Amsterdam in December 2022 and then on the Norwegian Sun in April 2023, just a few months later.

Both of those ships accommodate about 2,000 pax, and both cruises were a bit undersold.   Both times we had an Oceanview on the lowest passenger deck.   So it should be a fair comparison.   A few stark differences that I noticed:

1.        THE APP.   The HAL Navigator just worked.   From the time we booked, it was full of information, with no drop-off in quality on our cruise.   We did not purchase a wifi plan on either ship.   The NCL app worked only when on ship’s wifi, which took at least three tries to get on, and regularly fell off.   The HAL Navigator included free access to the New York Times website, and a free messaging app.   NCL charges $10 for their messaging app; I am guessing that would also stop working when one fell off the network.

2.        On the NCL Sun, menus for the MDR were available outside the main dining room, if one wanted to take a hike.   The menus on the HAL NA were available for both the MDR and buffet on both the television and app, with a clear explanation of where items could be found in the buffet, which is larger and less crowded on that ship.   Indeed, ship menus were available on the Navigator before our cruise, which helped me realize that some theme meals might be served on our cruise, and we watched for them and adjusted plans as needed.

3.        The gym on the NCL Sun is wonderful, with a separate fitness center that allows one to do floor exercises and stretching when a class is not going on.   It is well equipped with balance balls and foam rollers and all kinds of equipment.   This really helped my back.   It was open until 11 p.m.   On the HAL NA, the gym was closed at 9 p.m., and the limited floor space was often claimed by other events.

4.        The food on the buffet on the NCL Sun was excellent; they are known for the Indian dishes, but they also had a lot of great Mediterranean choices every day:   lentil salad, hummus, baba ghanoush, and so on.   They did not have much Southeast Asian food, and none very spicy, whereas HAL NA had great lunchtime Asian choices including sushi.

5.        The soft-serve ice cream was broken on the HAL NA when we were on, and there were two on the NCL Sun.

6.        The buffet on HAL NA was much more hygienic, with most serving by crew.   But the NCL Sun had two sinks for handwashing, which I always did before eating.   Norovirus is not eliminated by hand sanitizer.

7.        NCL Sun had much more outside seating available, which was important to us having come from a place where Covid and flu are still a thing.   We ate most meals outside on deck.

8.        HAL NA had free room service when we were there, which was nice when returning from a strenuous excursion.

9.        NCL Sun had three big production shows: a Bachrach tribute, rock & roll, and world stage.   They were good if you like that kind of thing.   But too loud (I could mitigate with earplugs) and too many flashing lights (hate lights in my eyes).   I missed the simple elegance of Lincoln Center Stage.

10.    We were really there for the ports that we were visiting; the ship was NOT the destination.   But both cruises did have some sea days to fill; HAL had incredible multi-media shows on sea days.   I really enjoyed the ones about radio and writers in the Caribbean, etc.   Although people who cruise a lot with HAL find them to be repetitive.   NCL Sun was lame by comparison.   I did enjoy the class on Filipino language, but when I went to the one on Serbian language, it was a waste—he had no handouts or powerpoint and just told stories, and even said that Albania was part of Yugoslavia, which it was NOT.   And while we are not trivia people, we did go to the “landmarks of the world” trivia.   But the pictures were hard to see, taking up only a fraction of the screen, and the questions were in illegible outline text, with a moderator who was too busy cracking jokes to actually read the questions well.

11.    Both ships had TV news available from BBC, MSNBC and Fox.   But the HAL NA had a whole catalogue of on-demand movies, that kept track of where you stopped viewing so that you could spread a movie across a few nights.   NCL Sun had 4 channels of entertainment, but no guide as to when movies began and ended, so it was not very satisfying.   On these port-intensive cruises, we were sometimes tired when returning from port and just wanted to veg.

12.    Drinks.   We don’t drink alcohol, but might enjoy a Coke Zero in the late afternoon.   On the HAL NA, there was a 2-for-1 happy hour in the Ocean Bar from 4-6, where we were given two cans of soda and a container of peanuts.   The NCL Sun served a glass of soda with mostly ice, which we were not going to pay for.   We were not interested in a package, because a friend who had it earlier complained that she drank so many calories that she did not enjoy the cruise as much, and also because our travel agent confessed some other pax did not think it was worth the cost of the required gratuities.   As it happened, we did have a Coke Zero most afternoons, but on shore before returning to the ship.   One sea day there was a reception for veterans and so we had a glass there (I almost didn’t go because I feared that I would be the only female vet there, but about 7% were women).

13.    On NCL Sun, even the “sailaway/guarantee” room came with a $50 excursion credit, which could be used to book in advance for one ship excursion we needed (the trip would take us far enough away that I would not do a non-ship excursion).   This credit was more flexible than waiting for onboard credit to book an excursion, a dilemma that I had faced before.

Thanks for the interesting comparison.  We are eyeing HAL for Alaska and, like you, chiefly interested in the ports.  I have noticed the excessive ice in NCL drinks, which would be bothersome if you were paying out of pocket rather than having the FAS.  I do wish NCL would "get with it" with furnishing menus at least a bit in advance.  As you said, there are theme nights at the buffet we would be interested in (or not) and would like the heads up so we could book our specialty dining around those.  Also, a big thanks for your service.  There are so many sacrifices for military members and their families and they are deeply appreciated.

Agreed. I am on the Sun right now and I have to remember to go down to check the menu. Annoying, but I did remember and tonight will be Specialty Dining  🙂

We were on that Sun cruise, and immensely enjoyed it mostly for the great ports. But the ship as well.

Concur about the very poor photos on World View Trivia.  Marc with a C I believe was host, and he did talk/joke too much.

Thanks for the run down.  We have cruised both (actually many) and have come to nest with NCL, reaching Sapphire status with the whopping 64 points for this cruise.
