Waterfalls, such as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil Falls, plummet from cliff to fjord. At the head of this magnificent spectacle sits the tiny village of Geiranger. No wonder travelers have come to call for over a century and a half. Geirangerfjord is often described as the "most beautiful fjord in the world." Note: Geiranger is an anchorage port – passengers transfer to shore by ship's tender.

Geirangerfjord is Norway's most spectacular and perhaps best-known fjord. With its high waterfalls and abandoned mountain farms, its landscape is included on UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites.

Geirangerfjord Cruise Port

The port of Geirangerfjord is located in the small village of Geiranger, tucked between towering mountains and breathtaking scenery. A small Geiranger Cruise Terminal can accommodate one cruise ship at a time, however, the majority of large cruise ships tender and transfer cruise passengers to the pier via tender boats.

This cruise terminal is adjacent to Geiranger Ferry Terminal, from where you can embark on fjord cruises that depart approximately every hour. Geiranger Tourist Information is available on-site, providing visitors with useful information on things to do in the area, taxis, e-bike rentals, fjord cruise timetables, etc.

Right next to the pier is a large parking for tour buses ready to take you on shore excursions to stunning viewpoints, waterfalls, and other points of interest.

Geiranger Hop on Hop off sightseeing bus departs every hour from the Geiranger cruise ship terminal to the iconic Flydalsjuvet Viewpoint. The circuit takes about 50 minutes and includes four stops.

Within a short walk from the pier, you’ll also find a restaurant, a cafe, a hotel, a small museum, and a grocery store.

Public buses are available, but this option is not recommended to cruise passengers as they do not run frequently.

2. Hellesylt Cruise Terminal

Cruise ships may also dock in Hellesylt cruise port , another small port located in Geirangerfjord, around 20 km/12 miles west of Geiranger village (the journey between the two cruise ports takes 1 hour 30 minutes because one part of it includes a ferry ride).

Hellesylt features facilities such as a tourist information kiosk, a few souvenir shops, cafes, restaurants, and hotels/campsites. Public transportation, a church and a hospital are close to the pier.

Cruise ships may dock or tender. It often happens that only cruise passengers who booked shore excursions are allowed to get off the ship, only to join tour buses waiting to transfer them to the nearby attractions.

Other passengers continue to Geiranger port where the ship can stay longer. You will get this information from your cruise line beforehand.

Legend has it that the “Seven Sisters” remained unmarried, while the waterfall on the opposite side of the fjord earned the name “The Suitor” due to numerous unsuccessful attempts to court the sisters.

When you visit Geiranger you are always tendering as there is no pier big enough for your ship. Since 2013 there is however the possibility of your ship to rent a floating pier, but as this will cost the ship a small fortune most ships will choose to tender. All tenders will arrive right in town in front of the souvenir shops and the tourist information centre.

The centre of town, if you can even call it a centre, is right there. You’ll find that the town exist out of supermarket, a couple of souvenir shops, a hotel, a camping, a chocolate shop and that is about it. Therefore staying in town is not really what we could recommend anybody.

Transportation

It is a small town so facilities are probably not what you are used to back home. Check out what options you have underneath:

Public bus system

There is a bus stop, but don’t count on any public transportation to be there and to be back on time as there might be a bus coming by once or twice a day.

Geiranger Taxis

There are taxis available through the tourist information point that you’ll find on the dock. Please know they are limited and so reservations or booking pre hand are advised. Also know it is about +/- 700 NOK (100 USD) per hour and therefore a lot more expensive than a bus tour.

Hop on hop off bus

There is a hop on hop off bus available in Geiranger. Forget about the usual concept of Hop on hop off busses though. If you buy a ticket it is valid for 1 ride. The bus takes you to the most visited and famous viewpoints where you’ll get about 15 minutes of free time. Order the tickets online or on the dock. The bus is not wheelchair accessible.

There are plenty of bus tours offered on the dock. The most impressive bus tour that is available in our opinion is the one that goes to Mt. Dalsnibba and to the Eagle’s bend. Know that often you can buy your tickets on the dock, but why not pre buy them online? Make sure to buy tickets for a time not to early in the morning as some cruise lines are not the easiest when it comes to letting off independent travellers. Hiking in Geiranger

There are truly some of the most impressive and beautiful hiking paths in the world situated in and around Geiranger. For those of you looking for an easy hike take the new “Waterfall walk” from town up to the Fjord Centre in about 30 minutes. The beginning of the waterfall walk is also marked for you in the map above.

FAQ about Geiranger

– How long is the tender ride? Depending on your position in the fjord between 2 and 10 minutes.

– Weather wise: should I take a tour in the morning or the afternoon? You never know in Geiranger. There can be 4 seasons in a day here. When you have a good sunny day the photo’s are better in the morning, when you have a bad day chances are it will clear up in the afternoon. You really cant tell, although if I would book for myself I would book the afternoon.

– How deep is the fjord? Rule of thumb is that the fjords are just as deep as the mountains are high.

– What does Geiranger mean? It means spear-shaped fjord in old Norwegian.

The Flydals viewpoint is not very high but it will already give you that exquisite view over the fjord. Make sure to stop when driving by or even walk up. From port it is 4 km / 10 min drive to the south.

A small white, wooden and octagonal church stands on top of the hill from Geiranger. It’s about a 20 minute uphill walk from town. Check with the tourist information for performances, because usually during the summer this church will give concerts during the day. From port it is 1 km walk to the south.

There are two roads going in and out of Geiranger. Geirangervegen or Gearing Road is the road going in south. Driving this road is an experience in itself. The hairpins bends you’ll have to negotiate and the ever changing landscapes along the way never fails to impress. The road goes up into the mountains to about 1500 meter above sea level. Geiranger’s secret photo stop

Dalsnibba is the most famous mountain top in the area. Lots of bus tours will make a stop here. Do realise it is 1500 meter above sea level and therefore sometimes it could be you are in the cloud like you see on this picture. If you are lucky enough to have a clear day, you are able to see all the surrounding mountain tops and your ship all the way in the distance at anchor. Mt Dalsnibba is about 45 minute drive from the dock. From port is 38 km / 45 min drive to the south.

At the end of the Eagle’s road you’ll find the Ornesvingen viewpoint. This one should definitely be on your list when visiting Geiranger. It gives you a view over Geiranger, your ship, the fjord and the seven sisters waterfall. From port it is 7 km / 15 min. drive to the north.

The waterfall walk is a new simple walk/staircase that opened up in July 2014. In about 20 minutes you can walk from the camping at sea level all the way up to the Norwegian Fjord Centre. The staircase will take you up with spectacular views over the waterfall, the fjord and your ship. Find the start at about 500 meter from the pier at the Geiranger camping.

This mountain farm is one that is open to the public. It is a great stop for a refreshment during a hike. Take a good look at this typical Norwegian farm house. If you look closely you will see numbers on the foundation stones of the farm. This is for future reference so the farmers know how to rebuild their house should a landslide come by. Continue here on 2 different hiking paths. From port it is 4 km / 1 hrs walk / 10 min drive to the north.

The most famous waterfalls of all is the Seven Sisters Waterfall in the Geirangerfjord. About 15 minutes before your ships reached Geiranger and 15 minutes after it departs from Geiranger your ship will sail past it. Make sure to be ready to admire this magical waterfall. Eagles Road There are 2 roads going in and out of Geiranger. One of these roads is the famous Eagle’s road. This is a steep stretch of road with 11 hair pin bends that opened up in 1955 to keep Geiranger accessible all year round. Navigating the road is an experience in itself. From port it is 1 km / 3 min drive to the north.

Which literally means: deep lake. On your way to Mt. Dalsnibba, about 30 minute drive from Geiranger, you automatically cross it. Make sure you make a photo stop at this 1000 m / 3200 ft high lake that is known for its depth of several hundred meter. This is where the locals go ice skating in the winter. This is what it looks like in early summer. If you are lucky you can even spot wild reindeer here. From port it is 18 km / 30 min drive to the south.

At the end of the mesmerizing Sunnylvsfjord we find the charming village of Hellesylt. The Sunnylvsfjord is the “sister fjord” of the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord. Kayaking On Geirangerfjord

Take advantage of this opportunity to get out and kayak on one of the longest and deepest fjords in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A guide will meet you at the pier and walk with you to Geiranger Camping, where the kayaks are waiting.

You’ll glide along the steep mountain walls where sunshine reflects an incomparable beauty. You’ll see thundering waterfalls such as the Seven Sisters and Bridal Veil. There is no experience required - your well-trained guides will teach you all you need to know. There are two person kayaks, as well as single kayaks. This is the perfect adventure for all, families included. After approximately 2 to 2 1/2 hours kayaking, you’ll return to Geiranger and take a short walk back to the pier on your own.

Geiranger, Norway

Geirangerfjord is one of the most beautiful spots in Scandinavia—if not the world. These are among the planet’s longest and deepest fjords, with steep walls of rock dropping some 500 meters below the water’s surface and rising 1,400 meters above sea level. Waterfalls tumble down from high above, free-flowing rivers snake through forests and glacial lakes stretch for miles. It's no surprise that these glacially carved masterpieces cut into Norway's western coast were made a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the nearby Nærøyfjord, in 2005.

The small village of Geiranger lies at the head of the Geirangerfjord, and being here is all about being outdoors in the clean, crisp Norwegian air to enjoy the stunning scenery. Cruise ships anchor at the end of the Geirangerfjord and passengers can hike, kayak, bicycle and ski to see the gorgeousness up close.

Everything you need to Know about visiting Geirangerfjord in Norway

The iconic Port of Geirangerfjord is considered one of the most beautiful fjords in the world, and is included on the UNESCO World Heritage site list. You can hire Bikes, stand under waterfalls, look for trolls and do the t raditional piling of stones. During our trip with the cruise line Royal Caribbean, we embarked on a scenic tour and excursion of Geirangerfjord that lasted approximately three hours which did both view points. We also disembarked and did a boat trip and explored the village.

What is the Port of Geiranger in Norway?

The Geirangerfjord is one of Norway's most popular natural attractions and although it only has a population of around 200 people it sees many visitors each year. Cruising the Norwegian Fjords  is the perfect way to explore this area.

Snow-capped mountains, lush green hillsides, and glistening blue water extend as far as the eye can see. The small village of Geiranger below provides perspective on the majestic mountains either side. There are two viewing areas, a short walk apart, offering stunning vistas. It’s worthwhile to visit both while you’re here.

Get Up Early for the Route in to Geiranger Fjord

The route into Geiranger is stunning and can take a few hours to approach. It is worth getting up early to see the views well before you dock in Geiranger. The fjord is 260 metres deep while the surrounding mountains are 1600-1700 metres high. The fjord is also known for its spectacular waterfalls and its fjord farms high up in the cliffside.

What is in the Port at Geiranger and what excursions can I do from Geirangerfjord?

You will disembark the cruise ship by way of the new walkway. A floating boardwalk will take you directly from the ship to the portside. If there is another ship in port you may be tendered.

Geiranger port has a tourism office, a few cafes and some gift shops. There are plenty of places to walk should you wish to not go far. Alternatively  you can book a tour of the surrounding area and really experience it all. Almost all of the excursions can be booked from visiting the local tourist office or online at  Geiranger Fjord Service

Explore the Waterfalls of Geiranger such as Storsæterfossen

One of the best things to do in Geiranger Fjord is visit some of its many waterfalls. The best season to visit the Geirangerfjord is late springtime or early summer when the snow melts.

Hike to Storsæterfossen waterfall; You can also take a hiking trail to  Storsæterfossen waterfall where you will actually take the trail behind the waterfall and stand under it. There are signposted trails from Geiranger where you can also purchase or borrow a walking stick to help you on your route.

The Seven Sisters waterfalls

The Seven Sisters is the waterfall that every one comes to see. On your arrival you will be lucky enough to see the Seven Sisters waterfall from the comfort of your ship. On your approach to Geiranger you will sail straight past it. You could also take a trip out to see the waterfalls up close. If you do this you will also see the Bridal Veil waterfall and the Friaren waterfall which  means suitor and is shaped like a bottle. If you are lucky your cruise ship may even do a 360 turn in front of the waterfalls as ours did!

Explore the Waterfall Walk in Gieranger in the Centre of the Town. 

One of the easiest waterfalls in Geirangerfjord is the Fossevandring and it is a 10 minute walk from the port in the small town. This is perfect if you do not want to do an excursion and just want to see directly what Geirangerfjord has to offer.

You can walk to the bottom of the waterfall which is directly in the centre of town and easy to see. You may then choose to climb the 327 steps to the top of the waterfall for the views and a visit to the Norwegian fjords centre.  Here you will find all of the information on the wWorld UNESCO site of Geiranger, including the way of life, history and scenery and the latest updates on the technology used to check for landslides.

Flydalsjuvet viewpoint is one of the first view points as you climb up to mount Dalsnibba. The coach will stop here for you to take the perfect photo.

Mount Dalsnibba has a fabulous viewing point at the top called the Geiranger Skywalk . This is only open during the summer months when there is no snow. There is a shop and cafe here at the top and with the most superb views if the weather is on your side. 

See the Views from Eagle bend road in Geiranger Norway

This part of Norway is stunning! Eagle bend road and viewpoint is a wonderful place to get a good view of Geirangerfjord.The Eagle road has 11 hairpin bends and is one of the main routes in to Geiranger. There is a newly constructed viewing point and even a small waterfall you can stand under should you wish. The view over the Fjord here is just amazing. There are many ways you can see this, You could book a bus tour or even hire a Twizy electric car.

One thing that everyone loves to do is stack stones to ward off trolls at Mount Dalsnibba. You will see these everywhere and your children will love it.

Other useful information about Geiranger Norway

• The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK). There is an ATM at the supermarket and you can also exchange currency at the Fjordbuda souvenir shop.
• It is very expensive to eat and drink in Norway so it may be cheaper to go back to the ship for lunch or take a packed lunch.
• What can you buy in the shops at Geiranger? knitwear, as well as troll figures and other souvenirs. You can also purchase winter down filled coats that are great value for money.

• Be aware there can sometimes be a few ships in the port at any one time so it can get busy. Prebook any tours you want to do prior to your visit.
• The weather in Norway can be unpredictable. Take plenty of layers.

What is the weather in Geiranger?

Most cruises to Geiranger take place between May, June, July, August to September when it is less cold. With the longest days being July and August this is generally the best time to visit when there is less snow and plenty of action from the waterfalls.
