Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era. 

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Go sea kayaking to explore the coastlines of Loh Lana Bay and Phak Nam Bay, catch a fire show on the beach, and cliff jump from impressive limestone cliffs into vibrant turquoise waters. Koh Ngai is one of the best places in Thailand for couples traveling in search of paradise. The living is easy, and the views are out of this world.

Miles away from the country’s stunning beaches, tucked away in central Thailand between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, lies a city of historical significance: Sukhothai. 

Once part of the Khmer Empire, Sukhothai was the first capital of ancient Siem and the place where Thai culture first took root and blossomed. 

For couples in a hurry to see all of Thailand’s wonders, a quick flight will do the trick in getting you here. But, for those with more time on their hands, the scenic route by train will offer up some unforgettable sights.

Once you arrive, dive deep into the history of this ancient capital. The Sukhothai Historical Park unveils a treasure trove of ancient history and centuries-old ruins. 

Wat Maha Thai is the largest ruin complex in the park and draws in crowds of visitors. But many tourists also make their way to Wat Si Chum, another popular site in the park, to take in the stone walls and open ceiling that showcase the 49-foot tall sitting Buddha. 

You’ll find another seated Buddha at Wat Srasi, with a tranquil lotus pond in front. For a spellbinding experience, come back to see the statue and lotus pond lit by the sinking sun. 

And when you want to understand everything you’ve seen in the park, pay a visit to Ramkhamhaeng National Museum. The museum offers a peek into the history of Sukhothai and will enhance your understanding of the impressive Buddha statues and restored sites. 

While Sukhothai doesn’t boast many intimate getaways or beaches, romance is still in the air. Couples looking for love can venture out to the Holy Heartland, a heart-shaped island in the middle of a heart-shaped lake, to watch the sunrise or sunset with their beloved partner.

One of the most romantic getaways in Thailand for couples to travel to lies in the country’s gulf. Koh Samui is a resort island in the Chumphon Archipelago and the largest island in Thailand after Phuket.

Instead, we’re always looking for the best ways to get the adrenaline pumping, spend as much time in nature as possible, and find some unique activities and attractions that we’ll remember for the rest of our lives together.

When it comes to adventurous destinations for couples, Thailand is one of the best places to visit.

Not only does it boast a plethora of things to do, such as climbing, diving, biking, and kayaking, it also offers opulent luxury, a fascinating culture, hospitable people, and the best food in the world. Yep, we said it. The best food in the world .

Experienced rock climbers from all around the world flock to Tonsai to tackle the challenging cliffs, but even if you’re not aspiring to be the next Alex Honnold, Tonsai offers fantastic beginner-friendly crags and a number of operators and tours to help people climb safely .

For those looking to do something unique on their couples trip to Thailand, climbing in Tonsai is pretty hard to beat.

Chiang Mai is home to the best whitewater rafting in Thailand on the Mae Taeng river, and by joining a guided tour you can charge down 10km of turbulent cascades and through stunning jungle.

The rafting guides all have years of experience, and the Mae Taeng river boasts 30 rapids up to Class III and IV .

There’s no shortage of incredible accommodation options for couples in Chiang Mai, but one of our favourites is the Na Nirand Romantic Boutique Resort , located walking distance from the Old Town.

Designed with traditional Northern Thailand architecture using gorgeous timber, Na Nirand offers a modern twist on how royalty must have lived centuries ago.

And being a short walk to the Old Town means after a big day of whitewater rafting you can check out the famous Night Markets for dinner then be back in your own slice of luxury in minutes.

Sea Kayaking in Ao Nang

Ao Nang is well connected with the rest of Thailand through the nearby Krabi airport, and by sea and road with all of the other major southern cities.

It’s also absolutely stunning here with so many incredible things to do , so it’s little wonder adventurous couples flock to Ao Nang for their Thailand getaways.

One thing you and your partner shouldn’t miss out on doing while you’re here is to rent a sea kayak and go paddling around the spectacular islands.

Pack a dry bag (also available to rent) with some snorkelling gear, snacks, water and maybe even a bottle of wine, and go exploring in the dozens of secluded coves, bays, and beaches that are within an hour or two of Ao Nang.

Once you find your own private beach, spread out on the sand and enjoy a picnic amongst the limestone peaks.

5-star accommodation in Ao Nang doesn’t come much nicer than The Pavilions Anana Krabi . And best of all, it’s actually affordable too!

Large, bright and impeccably designed rooms are found throughout the eco-friendly property, and you’ll be forgiven for wanting to spend all your days relaxing by the private pool looking up at the limestone peaks.

The resort runs an on-demand transport service, so you can get downtown and back without fuss.

Explore the Sea Caves Near Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is one of our personal favourite islands, and it’s a place we keep going back to as a couple time and time again.

There are a lot of great adventure activities you can do here, including some of the best scuba diving in the Andaman Sea.

One thing you shouldn’t miss out on though is joining the awesome 4 Islands Adventure Tour , which takes you to a number of magnificent spots close to Koh Lanta for snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and even exploring a hidden cave!

The highlight of this trip is the Emerald Cave near Koh Mook , which can only be accessed by sea.

Your boat will drop you off at the entrance (literally a small hole on the side of what appears to be an impenetrable limestone cliff), where you then swim 80m through a cavern to arrive at a secluded lagoon.

The whole day is pretty special, and something you’ll love doing with your significant other.

We’ve stayed in about 10 different hotels and resorts around Koh Lanta during our multiple visits here, but by far the nicest place for a couple to stay is Crown Lanta !

Tucked away in a private corner of the island (complete with its own private beach), the property really needs to be seen to be believed.

With some rooms boasting their own private infinity pools overlooking the sea and a world-class restaurant on-site, it’s one of the best resorts in Thailand for couples.

Scuba Diving in Koh Tao or Koh Samui

Thailand is one of the most affordable and best places to visit in the world to go scuba diving, with hundreds of thousands of travellers flocking to islands in the Gulf of Thailand like Koh Tao or Koh Samui to get certified.

The funky island of Koh Tao is the place to stop off for a diving trip, and while it might not be as popular as its famous neighbours of Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, it’s well worth spending a few days with your partner.

If you’ve never been scuba diving before, you’re in for a treat. Exploring the underwater world around Koh Tao and Koh Samui is an experience like no other, and is something that really creates a lasting bond and mutual hobby for couples.

You can get your scuba training done here for a great price (often around USD$250 per person, including basic accommodation), and the fun dives on the reefs around Koh Tao are visually splendid.

Definitely take a local boat over to Koh Samui after exploring Koh Tao as well. Koh Samui has lots of amazing luxury resorts, marine parks, and markets to explore.
