Shannon Princess

  • Category Premier
  • Capacity 10 guests
  • Crew Members 5
  • Booking Type Charter & Cabin bookings
  • Check-in Time / Location 3:00 PM in Dublin

Making her way on the lakes and rivers of the Shannon Waterway, the aptly named Shannon Princess reflects a traditional Irish welcome combined with contemporary comfort. The appealing team of Gibbons family owners, Captain Ruairi, Chef Olivia, and Host Ross, is top notch in all respects. Captain Ruairi is a trusted guide to the region’s many attractions, while Chef Olivia’s bountiful “new” Irish cuisine reflects her training at the famed Ballymaloe Cookery School.

Shannon Princess is decorated in rich browns and soft creams, accented by locally produced art work and crafts collected by Olivia and displayed in every corner of the vessel. Cabins are cozy and comfortable, offering clever storage space and beautifully tiled bathrooms. Typical of the Shannon Princess are thoughtful special touches: welcoming gifts, strategically placed charging outlets, and chocolates at bedtime.

Chef Olivia’s exquisite cuisine shows her creative use of traditionally Irish, locally sourced ingredients. Interestingly, Olivia purchases herbs and produce from the 17th century kitchen garden at Portnumna Castle, which is also included as an excursion. At breakfast, guests can choose hot dishes from the printed menu while feasting on Olivia’s homemade baked goods. Lunch and dinner are multi-course affairs, followed by a different treat and featured after-dinner drink each evening.

Excursions reveal Ireland’s cultural treasures both ancient and current. On shore experiences include a whiskey tasting; a visit to “Ireland’s Most Haunted Castle”; an interactive program at Adare Castle with falcon and other birds of prey; and three lunches at well-chosen venues. Captain Gibbons is a versatile driver-guide who can discuss such diverse topics as Irish history and contemporary politics — as well as what happened when Michael Jackson lived in a local village for six months!

On a recent visit, Barge Lady Ellen returned to Shannon Princess twenty three years after her first visit to Ireland and the Gibbons family. She was thrilled with the vessel, the route, the scenery, the crew, the cuisine, and the warm Irish welcome. Ellen highly recommends a cruise on Shannon Princess!

Unlike barging in other locations, it is not possible to bicycle or walk alongside the vessel as it cruises; however, once moored, active guests can disembark to explore port towns and the surrounding countryside by bicycle or on foot.

Cruising the Shannon River

Discover the magic of a river shannon barge vacation.

The Shannon Princess journeys through a countryside that has changed little through the centuries. Come aboard and join us as we cruise on the River Shannon , a beautiful part of Ireland where life flows at it's own pace.  Experience a journey through the heart of the Emerald Isle  where Ireland will embrace you as an honoured guest.

Shannon Princess cruises alongside Clonmacnoise monastery

 Your Unforgettable Journey.

Each day we pass crumbling ivy-covered ruins, medieval garrisons and sleepy villages. We moor at Clonmacnoise , a atmospheric 6th century monastery settlement and cruise through dappled woodlands and floodplain meadows. We journey to historic towns such as Athlone and Killaloe – today a pretty river-side village, but once home to the court of the last High Kings of Ireland. You’ll observe native wildlife - rare white-tailed eagles nesting in waterside trees or the elusive tiny Kingfisher. Join the Shannon Princess's chef and forage for ingredients or perhaps a lazy swim plunging in straight from the barge!

There’s also plenty of time for early morning strolls through twisting country lanes – or to explore the villages and trails by bicycles. We get ‘up close and personal’ with curated private shore visits. Make sure to stop and soak up the atmosphere. There's no place like it.

The River Shannon is named after the Celtic goddess ‘Sionna’ and is a series of lakes, rivers and tiny canals, and at almost 200 miles in length it is Ireland’s longest river . Today the River Shannon has retained its great natural beauty and enjoys a richness in wild flowers, bird and animal life.

Cobh - Historical Village on Cork Harbor near Cork, Ireland

cruise from ireland photos

Trip Savvy /  Linda Garrison

Cobh (pronounced "Cove") is a picturesque harbor town just a few miles from Cork, Ireland. Cruise ships dock in downtown Cobh and run shore excursions to Cork, the Blarney Castle, Waterford, Killarney, or the Irish countryside. However, Cobh is a nice place to spend the day if you want to just relax and just enjoy strolling around this pretty little village on Cork Harbor.

Maritime history buffs will know that Cobh was the last port of call on the Titanic's tragic maiden voyage, and the Lusitania was sunk off Cork Harbor during World War I. The Titanic Memorial and Lusitania Memorial are both just a few blocks from the cruise terminal.

Cobh was also the emigration point for 2.5 million Irish citizens who left Ireland for the United States or Australia. The first immigrants processed at Ellis Island started their journey to a new life in Cobh.

These photos were taken when the Royal Caribbean Jewel of the Seas visited Cobh and Cork Harbor. Some Irish dancers entertained us while in Cobh.

Cruise ships dock at the Cobh Heritage Center, the train station, and the tourism office. Downtown Cobh is just a few blocks away.

St. Colman's Cathedral towers over the quaint village of Cobh. Be sure to walk up the hill to St. Colman's - the view is marvelous!

The Jewel of the Seas certainly looks different than these small Cobh fishing boats.

Jewel of the seas at the dock in cobh, ireland, st. colman's cathedral in cobh, ireland in county cork.

The foundation for St. Colman's Cathedral was laid in 1868, and the church was completed 47 years later in 1915.

The original cost of St. Colman's was 235,000 GBP, much of which was donated from America and Australia. The renovation from 1992-2002 was 3.2 millon GBP. Isn't inflation amazing!

St. Colman's Cathedral is named after St. Colman, who lived from 522-604 AD. He is the patron saint of the Diocese of Cloyne. The cathedral is done in the French Gothic style.

Probably the most famous aspect of St. Colman's is its bell carillon, with 49 bells covering four octaves. The carillon is played from a console, with frequent concerts in the summer months.

The Titanic Memorial honors all who died when the Titanic sank in 1912. Cobh was her last port, and many who died were Irish emigrants sailing to a new life.

Lusitania Memorial in Cobh, Ireland - Irish Port of Cork on Cork Harbor

A German U-Boat sank the Cunard ocean liner the Lusitania in May 1915 near Cork Harbor, killing over 1100. This memorial honors all who died.

The Lusitania sank in only 18 minutes. Over 100 of those killed in the sinking of the Lusitania ocean liner were Americans, and many think this event helped push the USA into World War I. Many of the dead are buried in Cobh, and the sinking of the Lusitania is often considered the second worst ocean liner maritime tragedy, next to the Titanic.

Interestingly, Cobh was the Titanic's last port of call on her maiden voyage, and many Irish emigrants were onboard in the steerage class, making it a special tragedy for the country. Cobh also has a Titanic Memorial that honors those onboard the Titanic.

Dreamy photos of Wild Atlantic Way Ireland

There’s something about the way the sun reflects off the wild Irish grass; wet with sea dew; it glows with a neon vibrancy that is pure Irish green. The long and rugged coast winds its way around the west coast of Ireland, passing jaw-dropping cliff views, ruined castles, gorgeous nature park, colorful little towns, and cozy local pubs with live trad music. The Wild Atlantic Way embodies quintessential Ireland around every corner and down every path. I could barely click my finger fast enough to capture all these photos to inspire you to visit the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland. Every photograph transports me back to this special place in Ireland, where I felt wild, free, and at home. I hope these photos of authentic Ireland encourage you to go see the magical Irish green with your own eyes.

I want to thank  Traverse Journeys  for inviting me to travel Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way to take all these fantastic photos. If you’re looking for a small group tour with a sustainable and mindful tour company, then don’t miss this inspiring adventure by using code sk100 for $100 off.

Lush Killarney National Park has tumbling waterfalls and sweeping viewpoints. Extend your Wild Atlantic Way road trip with a drive around Muckross Lake, or get out of the car to stretch your legs with kilometers of scenic walking trails. Take time to experience the culture and history of Killarney by touring Ross Castle, or exploring Muckross Abbey with the historic graveyards and ancient Yule Tree.

Torc Waterfall Killarney National Park

The rugged Cliffs of Moher light up when the sun peeks out from behind the clouds. Visiting the cliffs for sunrise and sunset is a must to see how the light changes, but even with a bit of rain, the cliffs are striking. To avoid the crowds, start at the Cliff’s Walking Trail and continue down past the visitor’s center to watch the scenery unfold before your very eyes.

Cliffs of Moher Ireland

Sprinkled along the Wild Atlantic Way are hidden secrets only known to the locals from the county . If you slow down and take your time to get off the beaten path, you’ll be rewarded with ancient stone circles tucked away in a remote sheep pasture – looking out to sea; a secluded nature park on the Ring of Beara with a crashing waterfall and grazing sheep below; ruined castles without another soul in sight. Travel on the shoulder season, take it nice and slow and leave plenty of time to take stunning photographs along the Irish West Coast.

Ireland Wild Atlantic Way Waterfall

The Slea Head drive around the Dingle Peninsula is a truly magical place. With cliffs lower than Moher, you get an intimate look at the crashing waves as sea spray kisses your face, and the wind whips your hair. Break up the larger than life scenery with cultural experiences like sheepdog demonstrations with a real Irish farmer and historic sites like cross markers, museums, and beehive huts.

Slea Head Drive, Dingle, Ireland

One of the most surprising things about traveling the Wild Atlantic Way across Ireland was the colorful houses and bright seaside towns. Vivid pinks, blues, yellows, and greens light up the dark and rainy Irish days. The colorful towns of Kinsale, Allihies, and Sneem have picture-perfect flower beds, bright window sills, and wildly painted front doors. Spend plenty of time walking the side streets before ducking into a cozy pub.

Kinsale Ireland

I hope these dreamy photos of the stunning Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland inspired you to visit. These photos don’t do the Irish coast justice. Being there to feel the wind and the sea, and to explore the colorful towns was one of the best trips I took in 2019. So, what are you waiting for? Hit the road and slow travel the Wild Atlantic Way with these photos to inspire you.

I’ve been to Ireland and I’ve heard so much about the Cliffs of Moher. Unfortunately I’ve not been to the coast yet. The ancient stone circles look pretty cool, interesting that it’s off the beaten track. All of your pictures look superb. Good you managed to finish it off with a Guinness too!

' data-src=

It was really cool the stone circles were just hidden in farmer’s fields with sheep grazing. I hope you make it back to see these amazing views along the Wild Atlantic Way.

' data-src=

We had just a taste of Ireland this year. And this view of the Wild Atlantic Way definitely gave us many more reasons to want to return. Killarney Park is high on our list of places to see. And we would definitely tour Ross Castle. Those views along the Dingle Peninsula are stunning. And with all that sunshine, it hardly looks like the Ireland that so many people think of. Those colourful houses are a photographers dream! We are definitely inspired to come back to Ireland.

I know we had great weather and it was shoulder seasons, so hardly any tourists were around either. It is well worth going back to see these stunning landscapes I photographed along the way.

' data-src=

I did the Wild Atlantic Way two years ago and loved it. The scenery us amazing and I love the rugged coastline, castles, abbeys and of course, the towns. This is where the Irish culture is for me. Love looking at your photos and they sure did bring back some amazing memories. :)

It really was quintessential Ireland, and I just loved capturing it all in all in photographs. The Wild Atlantic Way is one of the best areas in Europe.

Wow, you took some incredible photos here. I regret not staying on longer when we were last in Ireland. Slea Head and the Dingle Peninsula are both stunning, and I love your photos of the colorful houses too. I totally agree about the food; it was delicious!

I know the food was so surprising. I guess you will just have to go back to see all these dreamy landscapes of Ireland and take your own photos!

While the colourful houses make the whole area lively!, the coastal walk provides a completely different feeling. I am always afraid of walking along the coast there because of the dangerous cliff edge. But if there is a paved way like in one of your pictures, I would also like to have a walk. Nice pictures!

' data-src=

OMG! Each of them is stunning! Loved the castle photography a lot! I was wishing to be in one of those pictures. Then I saw the colorful facades and couldn’t decide which were better. This post was a great visual treat!

' data-src=

Totally dreamy pics. From the castles to the wild rocks and the green meadows and even a colorful town – what a variety. I would love to get here and explore it myself. It has always been on my wanderlist but your pictures just pushed it much higher. Just amazing photos.

' data-src=

On all my visits to Ireland, I’ve only been to Dublin, I really need to branch out to see the rest of the country especial the Wild Atlantic Way, it’s simply gorgeous. Those waterfalls at Killarney National park would be our first stop, right after the Cliffs of Moher. Those towns look adorable, love the bright, vibrant colors of the houses.

' data-src=

Gooorgeous photos Sunsanna!

I do love the Cliffs of Moher, but I agree with you that this area is even better if you take it slowly and explore at a slow pace, spotting castles and ancient churches along the way. The photos you took of the coast line captured it perfectly, it’s wild, rugged and pretty.

I always love those seaside towns with their bright colours. All of this makes me crave a good pub with a fire.

I loved looking at your stunning photos again. Thanks for reposting them. I would love to visit Ireland and those area look amazing.

Hi, Do you allow artists to use your photos? Generally the finished product looks slightly different from the photos. I just need a starting point. Geraldine Ryan

Hi Geraldine, feel free to email me [email protected] If you are just painting the location based on the photo, that is totally fine, but I do not allow any commercial or personal use of my photographs themselves. I love your art by the way!

Cruises to Ireland and Scotland

Fascinating history and pastoral landscapes await.

On a cruise to Ireland and Scotland, take in the wonderfully contrasting scenery, from Ireland’s lush, rolling countryside to Scotland’s much starker beauty, where mountains slope down to serene lochs, inlets from the sea carved by ancient glaciers.

This corner of Europe is packed with culture and history, both ancient and more recent. In Scotland, you’ll come across grand, turreted castles and atmospheric ruins, as well as cosmopolitan cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh, each with world-class art galleries. In Ireland, you’ll find history shaped by everything from the Vikings to the golden age of shipbuilding. Don’t forget those famously cozy pubs—the perfect setting for sampling a pint of Guinness.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, belfast, ireland.

Dynamic Belfast, once famed as a community divided by “The Troubles”, has reinvented itself as a thriving, modern city with a bustling waterfront, grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a lively pub scene. Take a city tour to see the vivid street art on the Peace Wall, and explore the superb Titanic Belfast to learn about the ill-fated liner. Or head to the Giant’s Causeway, an expanse of 40,000 basalt columns on the wild Atlantic coast, created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Glasgow, Scotland

As well as being a center of imposing Victorian architecture, the buzzing university city of Glasgow is rich in culture, from the priceless art of Kelvingrove to the archaeological treasures of the Burrell Collection. Edinburgh is just over an hour away, and you’re also close to serene Loch Lomond and the forested mountains of the Trossachs National Park. The shopping in Glasgow is superb, whether you’re in the market for tartan, Scottish whisky and craft gin, or your own set of bagpipes.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Immerse yourself in the medieval history and Gothic architecture of enchanting Cork. Visit romantic Blarney Castle, a 15th-century fortress with beautiful gardens, and kiss the legendary Blarney Stone to be granted the “gift of the gab”. Sample the famed Jameson Irish Whiskey, shop for exquisite Waterford Crystal, and get a taste of life in Victorian times on a tour of the imposing Muckross House, located deep in the verdant countryside.

44-Foot Whale Found Dead on Bow of Cruise Ship Coming Into New York

The endangered sei whale, usually found in deep waters, was discovered on the bow of a cruise ship as it arrived at the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, marine authorities said.

The Statue of Liberty is seen in the background behind a sign for the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal.

By Livia Albeck-Ripka

As the cruise ship approached New York on Saturday, it was found to be carrying a grim, and unexpected, catch: The carcass of a 44-foot-long endangered whale, draped across its bow.

The whale, which marine authorities described as a sei whale, is known for its rapid swimming and preference for deep waters, far from the coast. Its body was discovered as the ship neared the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal, and the authorities were “immediately notified,” said MSC Cruises, which owns the ship.

A spokeswoman for the company said in an email that it had “comprehensive measures” in place to avoid such collisions, including training deck officers and altering itineraries in certain areas to avoid them. “We will continue to evaluate and update our procedures with our partners and the authorities,” she said.

Marine authorities said that they had towed the animal, estimated to weigh some 50,000 pounds, from the bow, and transferred it by boat to a beach in Sandy Hook, N.J., where they conducted a necropsy on Tuesday.

The investigation is continuing, but preliminary results — broken bones in the whale’s right flipper; tissue trauma along its right shoulder blade; a full stomach and decent layer of blubber — all pointed toward the animal having been in otherwise good health when it was likely struck and killed by the ship, said Robert A. DiGiovanni, the chief scientist of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, which is leading the investigation .

The whale was already “pretty decomposed” by the time scientists began the necropsy, he added, so they worked quickly to collect samples that could be tested for contaminants and other biotoxins that would indicate any other relevant health issues. “It looks like the animal was alive and it was hit by a vessel,” he said, noting that investigators had not ruled out other factors.

Mr. DiGiovanni said that his conservation group, which is federally authorized to respond to marine mammal strandings in New York, had dealt with more than 100 whales over the past several years, many of which had been entangled in nets or struck by vessels. Most of those whales were humpback and North Atlantic right whales, he added, noting that it was more uncommon to come across a sei whale.

Sei whales usually live in subtropical, temperate and subpolar waters and are named after the Norwegian word for pollock, “seje,” because the mammals are often found together with the fish. Their long, sleek bodies are usually dark blue or black with a cream-colored underside, and are often scarred by shark and lamprey bites.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the whales were commercially hunted for their meat and oil, decimating their population, which is now designated as depleted under the Marine Mammal Protection Act .

Mr. DiGiovanni said that the death was a reminder that humans shared the open water with many other mammals. “When you’re out there, these animals might be there,” he said. “We need to make people more aware about how to operate around these animals.”

A spokeswoman for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said by email that mariners along the East Coast were encouraged to slow down their vessels, stay alert, and report any sightings of dead, injured or entangled whales to the authorities.

Tom Cruise, son Connor and daughter Bella

Tom Cruise was all smiles in a rare photo with his and Nicole Kidman’s children .

The group shot, which was taken at a December 2023 hockey game and shared by former NFL player Derrick Brooks, recently resurfaced.

“Good Evening, Wow, look who stopped by my office before our [Tampa Bay Lightning] game tonight! @tomcruise,” the retired athlete, 51, gushed in his Instagram caption . “I was a little star struck but played it cool and He said he was too! 😂😂”

In the social media upload, the actor stood with his arm around Brooks while his 29-year-old son, Connor, flashed a thumbs up from Brooks’ other side.

Cruise and Kidman’s daughter, Bella, was also in the photo, with her head poking out along with a dozen other individuals.

The former couple adopted Bella, now 31, in 1992 amid fertility struggles. Connor joined the family three years later.

Kidman, 56, and Cruise, 61, were married from 1990 to 2001.

The “Mission Impossible” star and his next wife, Katie Holmes, welcomed daughter Suri before divorcing — and Cruise is now estranged from the 18-year-old .

Kidman, for her part, went on to welcome daughters Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13, with husband Keith Urban.

Tom Cruise and son Connor

The “Big Little Lies” alum has issued rare statements about Isabella and Connor over the years as they have followed their dad’s Scientology -practicing footsteps, telling Who in 2018 that it’s her “job to love them.”

The actress explained, “I am an example of that tolerance and that’s what I believe – that no matter what your child does, the child has love and the child has to know there is available love and I’m open here.”

She also admitted to “GMTV” viewers in the wake of her divorce that Bella and Connor referred to her by her first name instead of “mom” ( via Hello ).

Kidman’s eldest children have remained mostly out of the public eye.

Bella, who married Max Parke r in 2015, shares art and occasional selfies on social media , while Connor enjoys fishing and has a barbecue business called Connor’s Meatshack.

He has made many appearances with Cruise over the years, with the duo most recently stepping out together in New York City in July 2023.
