Disney Cruise Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

Disney Cruise Line - Disney Dream

Disney Cruise Line has an active fleet of four cruise ships with a further three ships on order ( Disney Wish and two currently unnamed ships).

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Disney Cruise Line

Before Disney Cruise Line became its own entity, Disney actually tried to work with both Carnival Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean. However, nothing really came of this and so in 1994 Disney had their first cruise ship plans drawn up.

Disney announced their first cruises would start in 1998 and commissioned familiar cruise shipbuilder, Fincantieri in Italy to build their first two cruise ships ( Disney Magic and Disney Wonder ).

In July 1998, Disney Magic performed the first maiden voyage for the cruise line – sailing from their homeport of Port Canaveral, Florida.

By 2005, Disney was using Los Angeles as their summer homeport for their ships and the gaining popularity of them was outstripping their capacity.

In 2007, they announced the building of two new cruise ships – Disney Dream , which launched in January 2011 and Disney Fantasy which started operations in 2012.

More recently, in 2016 Disney announced a new class of cruise ship – the Triton-class, which would be used for two new upcoming cruise ships. A third ship was added to the order book in 2017 and the first ship of the class, Disney Wis h is expected to join the Disney fleet in July 2022.

Disney Cruise Ships Frequently Asked Questions

What is disney’s largest cruise ship.

The  Disney Fantasy  and  Disney Dream  are the largest cruise ships in the Disney fleet currently.

What is Disney’s smallest cruise ship?

Disney Magic  is the smallest cruise ship in the Disney fleet, carrying 2,700 passengers.

Which is the oldest Disney cruise ship?

Disney Magic  is the oldest ship in the Disney fleet. It started service in 1998.

Which is the newest Disney cruise ship?

The newest Disney ship is  Disney Wish  which is due to enter service in July 2022.

What is the cheapest month to take a Disney cruise?

Generally, Jan-Mar or Nov-Dec are the off-peak season cruises with Disney and therefore cheaper to cruise!

Do you pay for dining on a Disney cruise?

No. Disney cruises are all-inclusive with no surcharges for dining. However, popcorn is extra!

Can you smoke on a Disney cruise?

You have never been allowed to smoke in the Disney staterooms. But they do have designated areas onboard each of their ships.

What Disney cruise ship is the best?

The best Disney cruise is usually the one your kids will beg you to go on! In all seriousness,  Disney Fantasy  has the highest review scores – probably because it is one of the newest with the latest facilities and technologies onboard too!

Are Disney cruise pools heated?

Yes! For your comfort, they are kept at a heat of around 75f.

Why is Disney Cruise Line so expensive?

Disney itself is quite expensive (parks and hotels) – but this is because you are paying for very high-quality experiences with exceptional guest satisfaction.

Their cruises are also more expensive because of the inclusive dining.

Disney Cruise Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Disney Cruise Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all disney cruise ships new builds.

Yes, all Disney cruise ships are brand new builds and purpose-built for Disney Cruise Line.

As Disney has exceptionally high standards you can guess that they would not be happy with taking on an older ship and converting it to their standard.

Therefore, they build each ship to their exact specification. However, they do use the same cruise shipbuilder as other lines such as Carnival and MSC Cruises use, which is Fincantieri in Italy.

Disney Cruise Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

Final thoughts.

For many, taking a Disney Cruise is an absolute bucket-list item – whether you are a seasoned cruiser or not. Who wouldn’t want to experience the magic of Disney, but at sea?

From their colorful ships to the very high customer service standards that Disney offers, a Disney cruise is perfect for kids (and adults too).

The cruise line has been slower than others to add extra ships, but with three new ships on order, they will be nearly doubling their fleet by late 2025!

Everything We Know About the Disney Destiny

by Heather Adams | Mar 20, 2024 | Disney Cruise Line , Disney Destiny

Take a look at what’s in store for guests who cruise aboard the Disney Destiny, an exciting new addition to the Disney Cruise Line fleet.

The Disney Cruise Line is adding another new ship! While we’re still eagerly awaiting the maiden voyages of the Disney Treasure and Disney Adventure, there’s already another ship under construction –– the Disney Destiny.

Disney Cruise Line first revealed the name and initial details of the Disney Destiny in March 2024. While this exciting new ship has been kept under wraps, it’s actually already under construction at the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. If you’re wondering what it’ll be like to set sail on the Disney Destiny, we’re sharing all of the details we know so far below.

The Disney Destiny is a Triton-Class Ship

In recent years, the Disney Cruise Line fleet has been expanding, and each new ship is more impressive than the last! All of the latest additions have been larger, with room for more passengers, more staterooms, and more of that incredible Disney magic at sea.

The Disney Destiny will be a Triton-class ship, just like other recent ships. In fact, as a sister ship of the Disney Wish and Disney Treasure , it will be the third Triton-class ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet when it officially sets sail.

Triton class cruise ships are, currently, the biggest ships of Disney Cruise Line. The three Triton-class ships are larger than the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy. Each one weighs 140,000 tons, with more space for everything onboard.

So, like its sibling ships, the Disney Destiny will likely feature a similar layout. However, the theming will be different –– each ship is special in its own way, and the Destiny will be no different, with unique dining options, incredible staterooms, and specially themed lounges and spaces.

The Disney Destiny Will Feature a Heroes and Villains Theme

Disney has already revealed the theming for the Disney Destiny, and it’s one that’s particularly thrilling: Heroes and Villains. This new cruise ship will feature a first-of-its-kind design theme to capture the legacies of beloved Disney stories and characters –– and their dynamic dualities.

Every great Disney story features duality, so the Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney Imagineering teams took that idea and let it inspire the development of the Disney Destiny’s theming. Across the ship, the opposing forces of light and dark that drive characters will be reflected. Oh, and attractions will be represented too, so you’ll want to keep an eye out for the cool Heroes and Villains rides from Disney theme parks around the world that might appear in unique ways.

While onboard the Destiny, guests will encounter both heroes and villains. We aren’t yet sure which heroes and villains might appear, and in what forms. However, we do have some hints! Disney Parks Blog shared that guests will encounter heroes and villains from classic Walt Disney Animation films like The Lion King , Hercules , and One Hundred and One Dalmatians across the ship’s various spaces in the form of experiences, entertainment, and more.

Minnie Mouse Will Be Feature on the Destiny’s Bow

In addition to the “Heroes and Villains” theming of the Disney Destiny, certain characters will also get the unique honor of being featured on the ship’s bow and stern. Disney has revealed that this Disney Cruise Line ship will feature brand-new filigree artwork across its brow, with a depiction of Minnie Mouse at the center.

The filigree artwork for the Disney Destiny’s bow will see Minnie transform into “Hero Minnie” in a heroic pose, wearing a cape that’s waving majestically in the sea breeze. She’s the bold leader who will take guests toward their vacation destinies.

When Will the Disney Destiny Set Sail?

It may be the youngest ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, but the Disney Destiny is already well on its way in terms of construction! In March 2024, the Destiny had its keel laying ceremony, a maritime tradition meant to bring good luck that places a coin within the ship’s keel.

More construction updates and information about the Disney Destiny is sure to come in the months ahead. However, there will be some time before the ship sets sail!

Currently, the Disney Destiny is scheduled for delivery in 2025 –– which means the ship is likely to set sail on its maiden voyage that year.

Disney Cruise Line ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most activity-packed, megaresort-like Disney Cruise Line ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Disney Cruise Line ships.

The biggest Disney cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Disney ships with the most watery fun zones and other family-friendly attractions on their top decks, as well as the most restaurants, bars and showrooms. They also have the biggest array of cabins and suites — as well as the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the three biggest Disney Cruise Line ships — Disney Wish, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream — are large resorts of the sort you find at such landlocked destinations as Orlando and Las Vegas. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Disney ships for you.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

However, Disney doesn't just operate such large vessels. The family-friendly cruise brand also operates two smaller cruise ships — Disney Wonder and Disney Magic — that carry just 2,500 passengers at maximum capacity. In both cases, these vessels are 40% smaller than Disney's biggest ships. As a result, they have fewer deck-top activities and interior venues than the biggest Disney cruise ships. They also have a much more intimate feel that many Disney fans love.

The two smaller Disney cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

To make sure that you end up on the right Disney ship for you, it pays to study which Disney ships are the biggest and which are the smallest before booking.

Here, every Disney ship currently in operation is ranked from biggest to smallest.

5. Disney Magic

What is the biggest Disney cruise ship?

The biggest Disney Cruise Line ship is Disney Wish. At 144,000 gross tons, it's about 15% bigger than the next biggest Disney ships (Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream). Unveiled in July 2022, Disney Wish is also the newest Disney cruise ship.

TPG has had staffers on Disney Wish three times over the past year to experience and review the vessel. For more on the ship and its new features, see the following guides and reviews:

What is the smallest Disney cruise ship?

The smallest Disney Cruise Line ship is Disney Magic. At 83,000 gross tons, it's about 40% smaller than Disney's biggest cruise ship, Disney Wish.

Unveiled in 1998, Disney Magic also is the oldest Disney cruise ship. Its arrival marked the beginning of the line.

Because of its smaller size, Disney Magic offers fewer and smaller attractions than newer Disney ships such as Disney Wish. Disney Cruise Line typically uses Disney Magic as well as its similarly sized sister ship Disney Wonder for its more destination-intensive itineraries — trips where you're going to spend much of your time off the ship and onboard amenities are less important.

Disney Magic, for instance, is the ship that Disney sends to Europe every summer for itineraries that are all about exploring cities such as Barcelona and Rome (reached via the port of Civitavecchia, Italy).

Are bigger Disney cruise ships coming?

Yes — at least one. Disney Cruise Line recently bought a massive, partly finished cruise ship that originally was ordered for Asia-based Dream Cruises. At 208,000 gross tons, the vessel will be more than 40% bigger than the biggest Disney ship currently at sea.

The unfinished and as-yet-unnamed ship, which originally was designed to hold 9,000 people, became available for purchase after Dream Cruises went out of business.

Disney plans to finish construction on the vessel and operate it out of Singapore starting in 2025. The ship will sail Southeast Asia voyages that likely will be aimed at the Asia cruise market.

In announcing the purchase, Disney said the vessel would hold just 6,000 passengers, implying that the ship's cabin configurations would be redesigned.

In addition to the vessel mentioned above, Disney Cruise Line also has two sister ships to Disney Wish on order. The first to arrive will be Disney Treasure in 2024. Another vessel in the same series, known as the Triton class of ships, is on order for delivery in 2025.

The two new Triton-class vessels will be roughly the same size as Disney Wish.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Disney cruise ships?

The biggest Disney Cruise Line ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the older vessels and offer a bigger-feeling resort experience.

On the three biggest Disney vessels (Disney Wish, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream), you'll find large water coasters careening around the top deck — a level of attraction you don't find on the two smaller Disney ships.

The three biggest Disney cruise ships also are home to kiddie waterslides, deck-top kiddie play areas and several pools a piece. The ships' insides are loaded with huge children's play areas, family entertainment and even adults-only venues.

Related: The ultimate guide to Disney Cruise Line

Disney's two smaller ships are about 40% smaller than its three bigger ships and have fewer such features. They have a notably more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships. They also hold fewer people. While Disney's three biggest ships are designed to hold around 4,000 passengers with every berth full, the line's two smallest vessels (together known as the Magic class of ships) are only designed to carry about 2,500 passengers with every berth filled.

That makes the two smallest Disney ships a good choice for someone who wants to try a Disney cruise but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Disney fleet thus appeal to a subset of Disney fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also sometimes less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Disney are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Disney Wish.

15 top adults-only cruises for 2025 & 2026.

Pack your bags and leave the kids behind for your next cruise adventure.

Top Adults-Only Cruises

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Find your perfect cruise

Viking Ocean Cruises

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

Courtesy of P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , boasts several luxurious adults-only venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, the kid-free Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

Guests can enjoy two-story beach clubs on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, while the clubs on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva include the line's first infinity hot tubs. You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for the club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic's two-level Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

The Walt Disney Company Reports Second Quarter and Six Months Earnings for Fiscal 2024

BURBANK, Calif.–The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) today reported earnings for its second quarter ended March 30, 2024.

Financial Results for the Quarter:

  • Revenues for the quarter increased to $22.1 billion from $21.8 billion in the prior-year quarter.
  • Diluted earnings per share (EPS) was a loss of $0.01 for the current quarter compared to income of $0.69 in the prior-year quarter. Diluted EPS decreased to a nominal loss due to goodwill impairments in the quarter, partially offset by higher operating income at Entertainment and Experiences.
  • Excluding certain items (1) , diluted EPS for the quarter increased to $1.21 from $0.93 in the prior-year quarter.

Key Points:

  • In the second fiscal quarter of 2024, we achieved strong double digit percentage growth in adjusted EPS (1) , and met or exceeded our financial guidance for the quarter.
  • As a result of outperformance in the second quarter, our new full year adjusted EPS (1) growth target is now 25%.
  • We remain on track to generate approximately $14 billion of cash provided by operations and over $8 billion of free cash flow (1) this fiscal year.
  • We repurchased $1 billion worth of shares in the second quarter and look forward to continuing to return capital to shareholders.
  • The Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer business was profitable in the second quarter. While we are expecting softer Entertainment DTC results in Q3 to be driven by Disney+ Hotstar, we continue to expect our combined streaming businesses to be profitable in the fourth quarter, and to be a meaningful future growth driver for the company, with further improvements in profitability in fiscal 2025.
  • Disney+ Core subscribers increased by more than 6 million in the second quarter, and Disney+ Core ARPU increased sequentially by 44 cents.
  • Sports operating income declined slightly versus the prior year, reflecting the timing impact of College Football Playoff games at ESPN, offset by improved results at Star India.
  • The Experiences business was also a growth driver in the second quarter, with revenue growth of 10%, segment operating income growth of 12%, and margin expansion of 60 basis points versus the prior year. Although the third quarter’s segment operating income is expected to come in roughly comparable to the prior year, we continue to expect robust operating income growth at Experiences for the full year.

Message From Our CEO:

“Our strong performance in Q2, with adjusted EPS (1) up 30% compared to the prior year, demonstrates we are delivering on our strategic priorities and building for the future,” said Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “Our results were driven in large part by our Experiences segment as well as our streaming business. Importantly, entertainment streaming was profitable for the quarter, and we remain on track to achieve profitability in our combined streaming businesses in Q4.

“Looking at our company as a whole, it’s clear that the turnaround and growth initiatives we set in motion last year have continued to yield positive results. We have a number of highly anticipated theatrical releases arriving over the next few months; our television shows are resonating with audiences and critics alike; ESPN continues to break ratings records as we further its evolution into the preeminent digital sports platform; and we are turbocharging growth in our Experiences business with a number of near- and long-term strategic investments.”

SUMMARIZED FINANCIAL RESULTS

The following table summarizes second quarter results for fiscal 2024 and 2023:

SUMMARIZED SEGMENT FINANCIAL RESULTS

The following table summarizes second quarter segment revenue and operating income for fiscal 2024 and 2023:

DISCUSSION OF SECOND QUARTER SEGMENT RESULTS

Entertainment

Revenue and operating income for the Entertainment segment are as follows:

The increase in Entertainment operating income in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter was due to improved results at Direct-to-Consumer, partially offset by declines at Linear Networks and Content Sales/Licensing and Other.

Linear Networks

Linear Networks revenues and operating income are as follows:

The decrease in domestic operating income in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter was due to:

  • Lower affiliate revenue primarily due to a decrease in subscribers including the impact of the non-renewal of carriage of certain networks by an affiliate, partially offset by higher contractual rates
  • A decline in advertising revenue attributable to a decrease in impressions reflecting lower average viewership, partially offset by higher rates

International

Lower international operating income was due to a decrease in affiliate revenue primarily attributable to fewer subscribers and contractual rate decreases.

Equity in the Income of Investees

Income from equity investees decreased due to lower income from A+E Television Networks (A+E) attributable to decreases in advertising and affiliate revenue.

Direct-to-Consumer

Direct-to-Consumer revenues and operating income (loss) are as follows:

The improvement in operating results in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter was due to:

  • Subscription revenue growth attributable to higher rates due to increases in retail pricing across our streaming services, and subscriber growth at Disney+ Core
  • Lower distribution costs
  • An increase in advertising revenue due to higher impressions, partially offset by lower rates
  • Higher marketing costs
  • The increase in Hulu Live TV subscriber-based fees was due to rate increases and more subscribers

Second Quarter of Fiscal 2024 Comparison to First Quarter of Fiscal 2024

In addition to revenue, costs and operating income, management uses the following key metrics to analyze trends and evaluate the overall performance of our Disney+ and Hulu direct-to-consumer (DTC) product offerings (1) , and we believe these metrics are useful to investors in analyzing the business. The following tables and related discussion are on a sequential quarter basis.

Paid subscribers (1) at:

Average Monthly Revenue Per Paid Subscriber (1) for the quarter ended:

Domestic Disney+ average monthly revenue per paid subscriber decreased from $8.15 to $8.00 due to a higher mix of wholesale subscribers, partially offset by increases in retail pricing.

International Disney+ (excluding Disney+ Hotstar) average monthly revenue per paid subscriber increased from $5.91 to $6.66 due to increases in retail pricing and a lower mix of subscribers to promotional offerings.

Disney+ Hotstar average monthly revenue per paid subscriber decreased from $1.28 to $0.70 due to lower advertising revenue.

Hulu SVOD Only average monthly revenue per paid subscriber decreased from $12.29 to $11.84 due to lower advertising revenue, partially offset by increases in retail pricing.

Hulu Live TV + SVOD average monthly revenue per paid subscriber increased from $93.61 to $95.01 due to increases in retail pricing and a lower mix of subscribers to promotional offerings, partially offset by lower advertising revenue.

Content Sales/Licensing and Other

Content Sales/Licensing and Other revenues and operating income (loss) are as follows:

The decrease in operating results was due to:

  • Lower theatrical distribution results as there were no significant titles released in the current quarter compared to Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania in the prior-year quarter. The prior-year quarter also included the benefit of the ongoing performance of Avatar: The Way of Water , which was released in December 2022.
  • Higher film cost impairments in the current quarter

Sports revenues and operating income (loss) are as follows:

Domestic ESPN

Lower domestic ESPN operating results in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter were due to:

  • An increase in programming and production costs attributable to higher costs for College Football Playoff (CFP) programming as a result of airing an additional game in the current quarter due to timing. In the current quarter, we aired the championship game, two semi-final games and one host game compared to the airing of the championship game and two host games in the prior-year quarter.
  • Lower affiliate revenue driven by fewer subscribers, partially offset by contractual rate increases
  • Advertising revenue growth primarily due to increases in rates and, to a lesser extent, average viewership. These increases include benefits from the additional CFP game and an additional NFL playoff game in the current quarter.
  • Growth in ESPN+ subscription revenue due to higher rates

The decrease in operating loss at Star India was due to lower programming and production costs attributable to the non-renewal of Board of Control for Cricket in India rights, partially offset by an increase in costs for Indian Premier League matches due to more matches aired in the current quarter compared to the prior-year quarter.

In addition to revenue, costs and operating income, management uses the following key metrics to analyze trends and evaluate the overall performance of our ESPN+ DTC product offering (1) , and we believe these metrics are useful to investors in analyzing the business. The following table and related discussion are on a sequential quarter basis.

The increase in ESPN+ average monthly revenue per paid subscriber was due to increases in retail pricing and higher advertising revenue.

Experiences

Experiences revenues and operating income are as follows:

Domestic Parks and Experiences

The increase in operating income at our domestic parks and experiences was due to higher results at Walt Disney World Resort and Disney Cruise Line, partially offset by lower results at Disneyland Resort.

  • Increased guest spending attributable to higher average ticket prices
  • Higher costs due to inflation, partially offset by lower depreciation and cost saving initiatives
  • Growth at Disney Cruise Line was due to an increase in average ticket prices, partially offset by higher costs
  • Higher costs driven by inflation
  • An increase in guest spending attributable to higher average ticket prices and daily hotel room rates
  • Higher volumes due to attendance growth, partially offset by lower occupied room nights

International Parks and Experiences

Higher international parks and experiences’ operating results were due to:

  • Guest spending growth due to increases in average ticket prices and food, beverage and merchandise spending
  • Higher volumes resulting from increases in attendance and occupied room nights. Volume growth benefitted from additional days of operations in the current quarter as well as the opening of World of Frozen in November 2023
  • Increased costs driven by inflation and new guest offerings

Consumer Products

The increase in consumer products operating results was driven by higher games licensing revenue.

OTHER FINANCIAL INFORMATION

DTC Streaming Businesses

Revenue and operating loss for our combined DTC streaming businesses, which consist of the Direct-to-Consumer line of business at the Entertainment segment and ESPN+ at the Sports segment, are as follows:

Corporate and Unallocated Shared Expenses

Corporate and unallocated shared expenses increased $112 million for the quarter, from $279 million to $391 million, primarily attributable to:

  • Higher costs related to our proxy solicitation and annual shareholder meeting
  • Increased compensation costs
  • Other cost inflation

Restructuring and Impairment Charges

In the current quarter, the Company recorded charges of $2,052 million due to goodwill impairments related to Star India and entertainment linear networks. The impairment at Star India was a result of the Company entering into a binding agreement in the current quarter to contribute our Star India operations into a new joint venture. In the prior-year quarter, the Company recorded charges of $152 million primarily for severance.

Other Income, net

In the prior-year quarter, the Company recorded a $149 million gain to adjust its investment in DraftKings, Inc. to fair value.

Interest Expense, net

Interest expense, net was as follows:

Equity in the income of investees was as follows:

Income from equity investees decreased $32 million, to $141 million from $173 million, due to lower income from A+E.

Income Taxes

The effective income tax rate was as follows:

The increase in the effective income tax rate was due to an unfavorable impact from the goodwill impairments recognized in the current quarter, which are not tax deductible, partially offset by the benefit from adjustments related to prior years, which were favorable in the current quarter and unfavorable in the prior-year quarter.

Noncontrolling Interests

Net income attributable to noncontrolling interests was as follows:

The increase in net income attributable to noncontrolling interests was primarily due to improved results at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, partially offset by the comparison to the accretion of NBC Universal’s interest in Hulu in the prior-year quarter with no accretion in the current quarter as we had fully accreted to the amount paid in December 2023.

Net income attributable to noncontrolling interests is determined on income after royalties and management fees, financing costs and income taxes, as applicable.

Cash provided by operations and free cash flow were as follows:

Cash provided by operations increased $3.6 billion to $5.9 billion in the current period from $2.3 billion in the prior-year period. The increase was due to lower film and television production spending and the timing of payments for sports rights. The increase also reflected lower collateral payments related to our hedging program, a payment in the prior-year period related to the termination of content licenses in fiscal 2022 and higher operating income at Experiences. These increases were partially offset by payment in the current period of fiscal 2023 federal and California income taxes, which were deferred pursuant to relief provided by the Internal Revenue Service and California State Board of Equalization as a result of 2023 winter storms in California.

Capital Expenditures and Depreciation Expense

Investments in parks, resorts and other property were as follows:

Capital expenditures increased to $2.6 billion from $2.4 billion due to higher spend on new attractions and cruise ship fleet expansion at the Experiences segment.

Depreciation expense was as follows:

DTC PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS AND KEY DEFINITIONS

Product offerings

In the U.S., Disney+, ESPN+ and Hulu SVOD Only are each offered as a standalone service or together as part of various multi-product offerings. Hulu Live TV + SVOD includes Disney+ and ESPN+. Disney+ is available in more than 150 countries and territories outside the U.S. and Canada. In India and certain other Southeast Asian countries, the service is branded Disney+ Hotstar. In certain Latin American countries, we offer Disney+ as well as Star+, a general entertainment SVOD service, which is available on a standalone basis or together with Disney+ (Combo+). Depending on the market, our services can be purchased on our websites or through third-party platforms/apps or are available via wholesale arrangements.

Paid subscribers

Paid subscribers reflect subscribers for which we recognized subscription revenue. Subscribers cease to be a paid subscriber as of their effective cancellation date or as a result of a failed payment method. Subscribers to multi-product offerings in the U.S. are counted as a paid subscriber for each service included in the multi-product offering and subscribers to Hulu Live TV + SVOD are counted as one paid subscriber for each of the Hulu Live TV + SVOD, Disney+ and ESPN+ services. In Latin America, if a subscriber has either the standalone Disney+ or Star+ service or subscribes to Combo+, the subscriber is counted as one Disney+ paid subscriber. Subscribers include those who receive an entitlement to a service through wholesale arrangements, including those for which the service is available to each subscriber of an existing content distribution tier. When we aggregate the total number of paid subscribers across our DTC streaming services, we refer to them as paid subscriptions.

International Disney+ (excluding Disney+ Hotstar)

International Disney+ (excluding Disney+ Hotstar) includes the Disney+ service outside the U.S. and Canada and the Star+ service in Latin America.

Average Monthly Revenue Per Paid Subscriber

Hulu and ESPN+ average monthly revenue per paid subscriber is calculated based on the average of the monthly average paid subscribers for each month in the period. The monthly average paid subscribers is calculated as the sum of the beginning of the month and end of the month paid subscriber count, divided by two. Disney+ average monthly revenue per paid subscriber is calculated using a daily average of paid subscribers for the period. Revenue includes subscription fees, advertising (excluding revenue earned from selling advertising spots to other Company businesses) and premium and feature add-on revenue but excludes Pay-Per-View revenue. Advertising revenue generated by content on one DTC streaming service that is accessed through another DTC streaming service by subscribers to both streaming services is allocated between both streaming services. The average revenue per paid subscriber is net of discounts on offerings that carry more than one service. Revenue is allocated to each service based on the relative retail or wholesale price of each service on a standalone basis. Hulu Live TV + SVOD revenue is allocated to the SVOD services based on the wholesale price of the Hulu SVOD Only, Disney+ and ESPN+ multi-product offering. In general, wholesale arrangements have a lower average monthly revenue per paid subscriber than subscribers that we acquire directly or through third-party platforms.

NON-GAAP FINANCIAL MEASURES

This earnings release presents diluted EPS excluding certain items (also referred to as adjusted EPS), total segment operating income, free cash flow, and DTC streaming businesses operating income (loss), all of which are important financial measures for the Company, but are not financial measures defined by GAAP.

These measures should be reviewed in conjunction with the most comparable GAAP financial measures and are not presented as alternative measures of diluted EPS, income before income taxes, cash provided by operations, or Entertainment and Sports segment operating income (loss) as determined in accordance with GAAP. Diluted EPS excluding certain items, total segment operating income, free cash flow, and DTC streaming businesses operating income (loss) as we have calculated them may not be comparable to similarly titled measures reported by other companies.

Our definitions and calculations of diluted EPS excluding certain items, total segment operating income, free cash flow, and DTC streaming businesses operating income (loss), as well as quantitative reconciliations of each of these historical measures and the forward-looking measure of free cash flow to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure are provided below.

The Company is not providing the forward-looking measure for diluted EPS, which is the most directly comparable GAAP measure to diluted EPS excluding certain items, or a quantitative reconciliation of forward-looking diluted EPS excluding certain items to that most directly comparable GAAP measure. The Company is unable to predict or estimate with reasonable certainty the ultimate outcome of certain significant items required for such GAAP measure without unreasonable effort. Information about other adjusting items that is currently not available to the Company could have a potentially unpredictable and significant impact on future GAAP financial results.

Diluted EPS excluding certain items

The Company uses diluted EPS excluding (1) certain items affecting comparability of results from period to period and (2) amortization of TFCF and Hulu intangible assets, including purchase accounting step-up adjustments for released content, to facilitate the evaluation of the performance of the Company’s operations exclusive of these items, and these adjustments reflect how senior management is evaluating segment performance.

The Company believes that providing diluted EPS exclusive of certain items impacting comparability is useful to investors, particularly where the impact of the excluded items is significant in relation to reported earnings and because the measure allows for comparability between periods of the operating performance of the Company’s business and allows investors to evaluate the impact of these items separately.

The Company further believes that providing diluted EPS exclusive of amortization of TFCF and Hulu intangible assets associated with the acquisition in 2019 is useful to investors because the TFCF and Hulu acquisition was considerably larger than the Company’s historic acquisitions with a significantly greater acquisition accounting impact.

The following table reconciles reported diluted EPS to diluted EPS excluding certain items for the second quarter:

The following table reconciles reported diluted EPS from continuing operations to diluted EPS excluding certain items for the six-month period:

Total segment operating income

The Company evaluates the performance of its operating segments based on segment operating income, and management uses total segment operating income as a measure of the performance of operating businesses separate from non-operating factors. The Company believes that information about total segment operating income assists investors by allowing them to evaluate changes in the operating results of the Company’s portfolio of businesses separate from non-operational factors that affect net income, thus providing separate insight into both operations and other factors that affect reported results.

The following table reconciles income before income taxes to total segment operating income:

Free cash flow

The Company uses free cash flow (cash provided by operations less investments in parks, resorts and other property), among other measures, to evaluate the ability of its operations to generate cash that is available for purposes other than capital expenditures. Management believes that information about free cash flow provides investors with an important perspective on the cash available to service debt obligations, make strategic acquisitions and investments and pay dividends or repurchase shares.

The following table presents a summary of the Company’s consolidated cash flows:

The following table reconciles the Company’s consolidated cash provided by operations to free cash flow:

The following table reconciles the Company’s consolidated estimated forward-looking cash provided by operations to estimated forward-looking free cash flow for full year fiscal 2024:

The Company uses combined DTC streaming businesses operating income (loss) because it believes that this measure allows investors to evaluate the performance of its portfolio of streaming businesses and track progress against the Company’s goal of reaching profitability in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2024 at its combined streaming businesses.

The following tables reconcile Entertainment and Sports segment operating income (loss) to the DTC streaming businesses operating loss:
