2020 Dodge Journey Overview

Is the 2020 dodge journey a good used suv.

The 2020 Journey is not a very good used SUV. Its cabin is full of cheap plastics, the third row is incredibly cramped, and cargo space is subpar for a midsize SUV . On top of that, this Dodge lacks the tech – including Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a host of safety features – you can find in most rivals.

There are plenty of better vehicles to consider. The 2020 Kia Sorento has a nicer cabin, more tech and safety features (including Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), and better fuel economy. Despite being a compact SUV , the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan has more cargo room than the Journey, and it can be had with all-wheel drive.

2019 vs. 2020 Dodge Journey: What's the Difference?

Dodge’s main changes to the 2020 Journey were subtractions. The available V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive were discontinued, and the trims were condensed from four to two, leaving just the SE Value and the Crossroad. Which Used Dodge Journey Trim Is Right for Me?

Dodge made the 2020 Journey in two trim levels: SE Value and Crossroad. Both have a 172-horsepower four-cylinder engine, a four-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive.

The SE Value is sparsely equipped, so shoppers may want to skip it in favor of the Crossroad.

  • Dodge Journey SE Value: Standard features include a 4.3-inch touch screen, a USB port, a six-speaker stereo, dual-zone manual climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, keyless entry, rear parking sensors, and a rearview camera.
  • Dodge Journey Crossroad: The Crossroad gains an 8.4-inch touch screen, satellite radio, Bluetooth, tri-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, second-row in-floor storage bins, a sunroof, fog lights, and alloy wheels. Some Crossroads may come with navigation, a rear-seat entertainment system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and/or remote start.

What Does Dodge's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Dodge offers a certified pre-owned program for vehicles six years old or less and with fewer than 65,000 miles. Eligibility is determined by the vehicle’s initial sale date. For its certified pre-owned vehicles, Dodge offers a five-year/100,000-mile maximum care limited warranty. Additional benefits are available, including a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription, a Carfax vehicle history report, 24-hour towing and roadside assistance and a car rental allowance. There are mileage and model restrictions too.

Dodge has one of the weaker CPO warranties among affordable carmakers, according to our analysis. Rivals such as Kia, Hyundai, Chevy, Ford and Honda are all better.

2020 Dodge Journey Versus the Competition

2020 dodge journey vs. 2020 ford explorer.

The 2020 Ford Explorer is a much better midsize SUV than the Dodge. It has stronger engines, sharper handling, better fuel economy estimates, more passenger room, a larger cargo hold, and many more standard safety features. Go with the Ford.

Compare the Journey and Explorer »

2020 Dodge Journey vs. 2020 Honda CR-V

The two-row 2020 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV , but its first two rows offer more passenger space than the Journey's front rows, and it has an additional 8.2 cubic feet of cargo space. The Honda offers more tech and safety features than the Dodge, and it provides a more stable ride. The CR-V is the better vehicle.

2020 Journey Performance

How does the 2020 dodge journey drive.

The only available engine for the Journey is an underpowered four-cylinder that struggles to bring the vehicle up to speed. Additionally, the automatic transmission hesitates to downshift.

The Journey provides a mostly gentle ride, but the SUV feels unwieldy around turns and suffers from a lot of body lean. Furthermore, the steering is imprecise and requires frequent corrections. All-wheel drive is not available.

  • Engine: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 172 horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: front-wheel drive
  • Transmission: four-speed automatic

2020 Dodge Journey Gas Mileage

This Dodge earns an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. Those are typical fuel economy estimates for the midsize SUV class , which includes V6-powered rivals. For an SUV with a four-cylinder engine, however, this vehicle disappoints.

2020 Dodge Journey Towing Capacity

The Journey can tow up to 1,000 pounds when properly equipped. That’s poor for the class. There are even some compact SUVs that can tow more than that.

2020 Journey Interior

2020 journey interior quality.

Most class rivals have nicer interiors than the Journey's. Cheap and flimsy plastics make up the bulk of this vehicle’s cabin.

How Many People Does the 2020 Journey Seat?

The 2020 Journey seats seven people in three rows. The first two rows have enough head- and legroom to accommodate most adults, but the third row is tight, even for kids. Some reviewers also find that the rearmost seats are stiff.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel

How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2020 Dodge Journey?

This Dodge has two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the second-row outboard seats. The second-row middle seat has a lower anchor and a tether, plus the ability to borrow a lower anchor from the passenger-side seat. There are no tethers for the third row.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-lowest rating of Marginal for its ease of use. The tethers are hard to find and easily confused for other hardware, the middle anchor is hard to maneuver around, and the driver-side lower anchors are set deeply in the seats.

2020 Dodge Journey Features

Like other Dodge and Jeep vehicles, the Journey comes with the Uconnect infotainment system. It’s easy to use and has a responsive touch screen along with handy physical controls. However, there are fewer features than you’ll get with rivals, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 4.3-inch touch screen, a six-speaker stereo, and a USB port
  • Available infotainment features : an 8.4-inch touch screen, a six-speaker premium stereo, satellite radio, navigation, Bluetooth, and a rear-seat entertainment system with a 9-inch display
  • Additional standard features: dual-zone manual climate control, push-button start, and proximity keyless entry
  • Other available features: remote start, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a sunroof

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye Review – It’s Not A Minivan

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye Lawrencetown beach

2013 is the fifth model year in the Dodge Journey’s existence, but it’s very different from the Journey that debuted in the early part of 2008. It doesn’t look that different on the outside, but its much improved interior and thoroughly advanced V6 engine, working with the flexible seven-seat layout, make the Journey a more compelling value-based purchase.

Yet this Journey, the one Chrysler Canada delivered to GCBC Towers in June, is a heavily optioned R/T Rallye. Not surprisingly, the proletarian roots of a vehicle that was intended to be, at least in part, a crossover successor to the Dodge Caravan minivan crawl through the cracks and are made more apparent when it costs as much as a BMW X1.

Like a blonde whose brunette roots come through days after her salon-quality dye job, the Journey’s blue collar origins are obvious but not all-consuming. Yes, the Journey traces its foundational elements back to the unloved Dodge Caliber, but using that knowledge to arrive at a quick verdict would be to ignore much of what the Journey R/T Rallye brings to the table.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye flowers

Top of the class? No, it’s not. Nevertheless, there are reasons why thousands of buyers in the United States – and especially Canada – consider the Journey to be an appealing combination of size strength; at the right price. As in GCBC’s recent write-ups on the Mazda 6 and Ford Focus ST , this review of the 2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye examines two sides of the same coin: the reasons why so many consumers would choose the Journey R/T Rallye, and the reasons why so many wouldn’t. The latter comes first.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Mazda CX-5. You read promotional material about sport suspensions, and then you experience them. All too often, an allegedly improved chassis proves to be disappointing. That doesn’t prove to be the case in the R/T Rallye, not at all. But it’s no CX-5. The key difference lies in the CX-5’s interactivity, its ability to tell you what’s going on, and the swiftness with which it can change direction. Where the CX-5 can be tossed around with an alarming amount of abandon, the Journey can power into, hold on through, and power out of a corner in a way that will impress its driver, discomfit passengers in the second row, and strain third row occupants. It’s a level unreached by most small crossovers, but it’s not as fun as what you’ll experience in the feelsome two-row Mazda. The major letdown is the Journey’s steering, with its broad dead spot on centre and the way it feels disconnected from reality when you’ve applied plenty of lock.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Ford Explorer. Above $35,000, the Journey R/T Rallye offers more equipment – heated steering wheel, rear DVD, navigation, backup camera – than you will find in most properly midsize SUVs and crossovers. But sacrifices will have to be made elsewhere, most notably in the size of the cabin.

The Ford Explorer, which isn’t the most spacious of midsize crossovers, provides 23% more passenger space, nearly double the amount of space behind the third row, 11% more space with the third row folded, and 19% more space with both rear rows folded.

It’s not an abstract comparison: you can have a decently equipped Explorer for the price of a Journey R/T Rallye. Access to the third row is fine in the Dodge, as the second row slides and tilts forward, but once seated you’ll find that the amount of knee room isn’t matched by the foot space, which is constricted. As is the case with the Mazda 5, the knowledge that little luggage can be toted with seven people aboard is depressing. The Journey is a five or maybe a six-seater for travelling; a seven seater only if its owner has no intention to carry stuff.

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Dodge Grand Caravan. You know the Grand Caravan is the properly big Dodge family vehicle, but it’s hard to grasp just how much space you’ll lose in the Journey unless you park them side by side, walk in one sliding door, out the other, and into the Journey through the aperture created by its front-hinged doors. If the Journey’s comparative lack of space doesn’t put you off, its all-around lack of a certain something will. Call it solidity, structural stability, an overarching sense of permanence: whatever it is, the Journey doesn’t have it in the same quantities as Dodge’s two best products, the Ram pickup and the Grand Caravan.

Parking lots reveal this in the worst way. Turn from a road that slopes downward into a driveway which slopes upward and then traverse a few speedbumps and the Journey produces that scrunch  sound you didn’t think you’d hear in anything other than a Chrysler 200 Convertible. A squark  here, a groan  there, it never feels like the latest efforts from Chrysler’s minivans, or the minivans crafted by Honda or Toyota. The R/T’s materials aren’t a letdown after the Grand Caravan, but the seating position had me feeling like I was falling through the windshield. The centre armrest felt like it was built to deter my elbow from resting. Simply put, the Grand Caravan is better at being a minivan than the Journey is at being a small crossover.

On the contrary…

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Mazda CX-5. The CX-5, like the CR-V, RAV4, Tucson, Rogue, and Tiguan, isn’t even available with more than 200 horsepower. (They don’t offer third rows, either. Nor do the Chevrolet Equinox, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, non-XL Hyundai Santa Fe, upcoming Jeep Cherokee, Kia Sportage, and Subaru Forester.) Better than the 3.6L’s total output is the way in which it makes its power. There’s just enough low-down torque to impress, but the way the Pentastar V6 gets into a groove as the revs rise is the really admirable aspect.

There’s a penalty for this: the Journey V6’s city fuel economy is way down at 16 mpg, same as the Ram V6 with its 8-speed automatic. Indeed, the Journey is rated at 24 mpg on the highway, equal to the CX-5’s city rating, which is down six mpg from the CX-5’s 30 mpg highway rating. But one would hope the CX-5 and its like-minded two-row crossovers would use much less fuel – they’re much  less powerful. In both mundane and extraordinary circumstances, they feel it, too.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye rear three quarter

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Ford Explorer. The Explorer feels and handles bigger, because it is bigger. Bigger isn’t always better. The Explorer is five inches longer, seven inches wider, four inches taller, and nearly 500 pounds heavier. Yet it makes do with just seven extra horsepower and five fewer lb-ft of torque. And while specifications suggest a huge gap in interior space between the bigger Explorer and smaller Journey, the atmosphere of space in the Journey, with its high roof and expansive second row, shrinks that gap. You’d pay for extra space, as well. At the same price point, an Explorer XLT won’t have this Journey R/T Rallye’s leather-clad seats, backup camera, heated steering wheel, 19-inch wheels, or all-wheel-drive.

2013 Dodge Journey R/T Transfer truck

The Journey R/T Rallye isn’t a Dodge Grand Caravan. Say what you will about the Grand Caravan’s people and cargo-hauling abilities. It’s still a minivan. It feels really heavy. It’s challenging to park. And  it’s still a minivan, the best type of vehicle in the world, but one that very few people want. The Journey, propelled by the same V6 as the Grand Caravan, feels wonderfully powerful above 3500 rpm, it handles in such a way as to not feel heavy, it doesn’t feel vast in a small parking lot, and it’s not a minivan. With built-in booster seats, a second row that moves easily to allow third row access and to enable parents to reach squabbling toddlers, and third row seating that folds effortlessly, the Journey is a semi-minivan, without the minivan image.

Lacking a semester at finishing school, the 2013 Dodge Journey R/T Rallye attempts to make up for what it’s missing with features and horsepower. The extent to which you desire red-stitched leather seats and 283 horses will define the degree to which the Journey has succeeded in making up for its deficiencies.

Newfoundland's unknown soldier begins journey home from France after more than 100 years

Remains to land in st. john's saturday evening, social sharing.

A group of military members carrying a casket draped with a Canadian flag.

It was a bright day with blue skies at the foot of the Newfoundland Regiment caribou memorial that stands tall overlooking the lush green mounds of Beaumont-Hamel — fitting for a packed ceremony to bring an unknown soldier home to Newfoundland more than 100 years after the First World War.

O Canada, La Marseillaise, the Last Post and the Ode to Newfoundland rang out across the century-old battlefield that usually sits silent, serving as a reminder for one of the largest catastrophes in the province's history.

Jacob Neil is from St. John's and is supervisor of the guide team at the Beaumont-Hamel historic site with Veterans Affairs Canada. He was tasked with singing the Ode for the ceremony.

"It's something that I was asked if I'd be interested in. I know the prospect of it is a little bit daunting on such a prestigious and important day. It's something I knew I couldn't pass up," Neil told CBC News. "It's a privilege to just be here and to be able to participate in this ceremony. It's something that I'll treasure forever."

Neil said the mood on site is always a little sombre, but this weekend's transfer ceremony — one that saw France turn over the remains of the unknown soldier to Canada — had an aura of excitement.

"Closure is not something that can probably be attained for people, given the tragedy that happened here over 100 years ago, but it's something close to that, I think, for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador," he said.

Newfoundland's unknown solider is returning home over 100 years after First World War

Heading home.

From France, the Canadian and Newfoundland and Labrador delegation will return home. With them, an added member.

With his casket now draped in a Canadian flag, the unknown solider will land in St. John's Saturday evening.

From there, a parade through the city passing by sites of historical significance to the Newfoundland Regiment, including the training grounds in Pleasantville, the harbour where the S.S. Florizel would have tied up, the Sergeants' Memorial, C.L.B. Armoury and Parade Street.

A group of military members standing over a casket near a memorial site.

Premier Andrew Furey was on the ground with his family for the duration of this week's events that began on Wednesday in northern France.

"It was incredibly moving, historic, special, spiritual. To see the casket again and to be standing there with my son, realizing that somebody's son — our son collectively — is now coming home is incredibly emotional," Furey said shortly after Saturday morning's ceremony.

"I broke down several times. It's a truly special and historic moment for all of Newfoundland and Labrador. It was an honour to be here today as premier."

  • A historic homecoming will take place Saturday as an unknown soldier returns to St. John's
  • He once guarded the unknown soldier in Ottawa. Now he is championing N.L.'s unknown

Saturday's ceremony is the pre-cursor to another significant event that is taking place on July 1. The date marks Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador and 100 years of the Newfoundland National War Memorial in downtown St. John's.

Preparations have been underway to refurbish the site ahead of the milestone and will be the final resting place for the unknown soldier, inside a newly constructed tomb.

"It'll be another historic moment. I encourage every Newfoundlander and Labradorian, if they can, to come to celebrate this young man and all the young men that we're leaving behind," said Furey.

"I think July 1 will be powerful and I encourage everyone to participate and reflect on what it means for the sacrifice these young men made."

The soldier will lie in state at Confederation Building from June 28 to June 30, allowing members of the public to visit the casket.

What is Android Auto?

Everything you need to know about android auto: how to use it, which cars are compatible.

dodge journey review canada

Even if you don’t live in one of the 26 states (and Washington D.C.) that prohibit you from using your cellphone while driving, it’s still just a bad idea. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 3,522 people died in distracted driving incidents in 2021. A fair chunk of those are likely the result of people taking their eyes off the road to read their texts. Thankfully, if you’ve got an Android smartphone, you’ve got a better and safer way to interact with your phone in the car. It’s called Android Auto, and it helps you keep your eyes on the road by reading your texts for you, among many, many other things.

What exactly does Android Auto do?

Android Auto (currently on its 12th generation) is a system created by Google that allows you to mirror apps from your Android Phone to your vehicle’s infotainment system, allowing for hands-free use. It also integrates Google Assistant as well as many other Google apps like Google Maps, Google Play Music, YouTube Music, and third-party apps like Spotify, WhatsApp, Discord and Skype. It even supports Apple Music. Google's official site for Android Auto has links to various mapping, communications and media apps that work with its program.

How to connect Android Auto in my car?

Android Auto can be connected to your vehicle in two ways. The first is with a USB cable. This has the benefit of letting you charge your phone while you drive. Second, you can connect your phone wirelessly via Bluetooth, which has been technically supported since 2018, but wasn’t widely available until later. Now, the majority of vehicles and phones support wireless connectivity.

Which cars are compatible with Android Auto?

Like Android’s rival Apple and its CarPlay phone integration, the list of vehicles that support Android Auto is always growing, particularly as more manufacturers begin using the Android Automotive operating system for their vehicle infotainment systems. Google’s Android Auto website keeps a comprehensive list of vehicles and stereos that support the system, making it super easy to know if you can get in on the fun, particularly if you have a car that’s not brand new.

If you want to know which new cars in 2023 come with Android Auto, we can help you out with a list.

Why is Android Auto so useful?

Aside from the safety factor and the familiarity of using apps you already know and trust, one big benefit of Android Auto is that it's always the same, regardless of what car you get into. For example, if you get out of your 2022 Honda Civic daily driver and want to load up your 2019 Ford F-150 for a weekend of camping, you'll have the same seamless infotainment experience in both vehicles. It's also extremely handy if you and a significant other share a car.

What are the best Android Auto features?

There are a ton of really great baked-in features that make Android Auto awesome , but here’s a short list of our favorites:

  • It will automatically resume media when you get back in your car
  • It can read and answer messages from lots of apps like Facebook, Instagram, Signal, Telegram and WhatsApp
  • It works with tons of maps apps including Google Maps, TomTom Go, Waze (which is baked-in to Google Maps too) and Samsung Maps
  • Google Assistant, which runs Android Auto, will interact with your smart home devices, so you can ask it to open your smart garage door or turn on lights inside your house

Can I add Android Auto to my older car?

While most new vehicles come equipped as standard with Android Auto integration, many older vehicles never had it. If you have an older car that you wish was a little more modern, the good news is that adding Android Auto is usually a pretty simple affair thanks to the wide world of aftermarket car stereos.

Most of these units are what’s known as “double DIN” sized, which should suit most vehicles with the appropriate installation kit. The installation process varies from vehicle to vehicle but if you’re handy, it’s not usually too difficult. If you’re not, then professional installation is the way to go. Pricing for a decent Android Auto-compatible stereo starts at around $170 before installation, so it’s not going to break the bank to make your old car feel a lot more modern.

Can I use Android Auto in my country?

Android Auto unfortunately isn’t available in all countries. It’s available in a ton of them, don’t get us wrong, but because of issues with the Google Play Services providing location information, some users can’t use the system without finding some kind of hacky workaround. Google launched with support for five countries initially, added an additional 36 countries to the list of compatible locales back in 2020, then another six more in 2021 for a total of 47. Google has a list of countries where Android Auto is available here.

When did Android Auto debut?

Android Auto made its official debut in 2014 at the Google I/O developer conference, but the official app wasn’t released to the public until 2015. In 2016, Google enabled Android Auto to run directly from the phone via an app, rather than on the vehicle’s hardware, though this was discontinued for phones running Android 9 or later in 2022 in favor of a more direct integration with Google Assistant.

2012 Dodge Journey Review

2012 Dodge Journey R/T 4dr SUV Exterior

See Edmunds pricing data

Has Your Car's Value Changed?

Used car values are constantly changing. Edmunds lets you track your vehicle's value over time so you can decide when to sell or trade in.

Edmunds' Expert Review

  • Sophisticated interior
  • family-friendly size
  • available built-in booster seats
  • strong V6 engine
  • smart touchscreen interface.
  • Overmatched four-cylinder
  • less utilitarian than competitors.

Besides changes to its trim names and structure, the 2012 Dodge Journey is essentially unchanged.

Edmunds says

Though not quite a class leader, the 2012 Dodge Journey has enough positive attributes to make it worthy of consideration.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2012 Dodge Journey American Value Package 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Vehicle overview.

Once, the Dodge Journey was only a good idea compromised by half-hearted execution. Slow, ponderous and inefficient on the highway, it was further flawed by an interior that didn't fit the human form and seemed poorly made besides. Usually it takes an entirely new model to turn around such a wayward ship, but Dodge managed to bail out its midsize crossover with a bold makeover last year. The result is a compact sport-utility that suddenly is worth considering as a family hauler.

The 2012 Dodge Journey slots into the crossover SUV fray alongside tweener-sized vehicles like the Chevrolet Equinox, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4. Like the RAV4, the Journey offers a small third-row seat that is useful for occasionally taking on a couple of extra kids. With or without the third row, however, the Journey strikes a right-sized balance for shoppers looking for something to schlep the family around without stepping up to costlier, thirstier and more cumbersome models like the Dodge Durango and Toyota Highlander.

While the base-model Journey's four-cylinder engine remains underpowered and not especially fuel-efficient, the 3.6-liter V6 is one of the more robust engines in this vehicle segment and offers decent fuel economy. Changes made to the steering and suspension last year also make the Journey much better to drive. The most notable improvement to the Journey is within the cabin, where higher-quality materials, a pleasing design and Chrysler's latest (and very good) technology features are on display. Meanwhile, the wealth of good ideas still remains, including clever hidden storage bins and available integrated child seats.

Thanks to its well-rounded nature, the 2012 Dodge Journey easily earns our approval. Of course, its competition remains tough to beat. Both the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are fully redesigned this year, boasting higher fuel economy and more refined driving dynamics than last year's versions. You might also want to check out the Chevrolet Equinox and Subaru Forester. But overall the Journey is a smart pick for a small crossover, particularly with the V6 engine.

Performance & mpg

The 2012 Dodge Journey SE is powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 173 horsepower and 166 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined -- not great given its anemic acceleration and thriftier competitors.

The Journey SXT and Crew get a 3.6-liter V6 good for 283 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It gets a six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive standard, but all-wheel drive is optional. At the track we recorded a 7.5-second 0-60-mph time for a Journey V6 FWD, an average time for the class. Its fuel economy stands at 17/25/20 with front-wheel drive and 16/24/19 with all-wheel drive. These are on par with the Chevy Equinox, but worse than other V6-powered small crossovers.

Every 2012 Dodge Journey comes standard with antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, active front head restraints, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Integrated second-row child booster seats are optional on every Journey. In Edmunds brake testing, a Journey V6 FWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 121 feet, an average performance for its segment.

In government crash tests, the Journey received four out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars awarded for frontal impact protection and five stars for overall side impact protection. In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Journey received the top score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side-impact and roof-strength tests.

The four-cylinder engine found in the base 2012 Dodge Journey SE just doesn't have enough power to get this heavy crossover moving. It also doesn't provide the fuel economy to justify its dawdling pace. As such, we'd avoid it and step up to the SXT and its 3.6-liter V6. This engine is quickly spreading throughout the Chrysler lineup, and for good reason: It offers smooth, robust power and decent fuel economy. Unfortunately, its six-speed transmission can be slow to respond when a downshift (or two) is needed. On the move, the Journey is competent for the class, with a smooth ride and secure handling.

The interior wasn't the only thing that was overhauled last year. Changes to the suspension and steering gear completely transformed the driving experience. Handling feels much more confident, and the steering is now much more precise and predictable, with a light but still nicely weighted feel to it. So it's improved, although a Honda CR-V will likely feel more agile around town, while the Chevy Equinox provides an even more comfortable and quiet ride on the freeway.

Last year's overhaul transformed the Journey's interior from one of the worst among compact/midsize crossovers to one of the best. The materials are better in quality and texture, the design is clean and modern, and its up-to-the-minute technology is pretty easy to use. We especially like the extra-large touchscreen interface available on most models.

Ongoing strengths for the Journey are its clever storage bins and integrated child seats that make it decidedly family-friendly. Also helping that cause is a versatile seating arrangement. While the sliding and reclining second-row seat is now the norm for this size of crossover, its optional third-row seat is not. Like the Toyota RAV4's, this seat is far from adult-friendly, but if you need to take a few extra kids to a T-ball game, it should come in handy.

In terms of storage space, the Journey offers a total capacity of 68 cubic feet with all rear seats folded. That's a few cubic feet smaller than the RAV4 and CR-V, but bigger than the Chevy Equinox. For smaller items, the Journey does its best Millennium Falcon impersonation with storage bins hidden under the second-row floor as well as under the passenger seat.

2012 Dodge Journey models

The 2012 Dodge Journey is available in five- and seven-passenger configurations. It is available in American Value Package, SE, SXT, R/T and Crew trim levels.

The American Value Package comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, dual-zone manual climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a sliding and reclining second-row seat and a six-speaker sound system (with a compact touchscreen interface, a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack, an iPod/USB audio interface and steering wheel controls). The SE adds privacy tinted glass, side roof rails and LED taillights.

Moving up to the SXT adds a V6 engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, foglamps, LED taillamps, a cargo cover and satellite radio. A premium sound system and 19-inch wheels are optional.

The Comfort/Convenience Group available on both the SE and SXT adds a six-way power driver seat with four-way power lumbar adjustment, a fold-flat passenger seatback and a storage bin under the passenger seat. The Premium Group available on the SE is identical, but includes satellite radio as well. The Popular Equipment Group includes all of the above plus remote ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, an outside temperature gauge, a compass, and on the SE, 17-inch alloy wheels. Also available is a larger infotainment touchscreen.

These optional items come standard on the Crew, which also gets automatic headlamps, 19-inch wheels, chrome-like exterior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a premium audio system and Bluetooth (stand-alone option on SE and SXT). Optional on the Crew are a sunroof, a rear-seat entertainment system and leather upholstery that brings with it heated front seats.

The R/T (which arrives later in the model year) will add a monochrome exterior, special 19-inch wheels and black leather upholstery with red stitching. Otherwise, it is equipped similarly to the Crew.

The Flexible Seating Group available on every Journey adds a folding/reclining third-row seat and three-zone automatic climate control with rear air-conditioning. Integrated second-row child booster seats are also optional on every Journey, while a navigation system is available on all but the SE.
