A first-timer’s guide to Edmonton, Alberta's capital city

Edmonton does things big: it’s home to Canada ’s largest sports and entertainment district, the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America, the oldest and largest fringe theater festival in North America and one of the largest shopping malls on the planet. But underneath that big, bold surface is a vibrant capital city with an unpretentious population and a rich and diverse culture.

Canada’s fifth-largest city and northernmost major metropolis is filled with so many fascinating places to explore that planning a visit can be a bit overwhelming. Where should I go? How can I get there? How can I experience the real culture of this place? This guide tackles those questions and provides practical advice on how to make the most of your first visit to Edmonton.

What is the best time to visit Edmonton?

The summer months are the most popular time to visit – the city receives as much as 17 hours of daylight per day, and temperatures range between 20°C (68°F) to 30°C (86°F). It’s also the season when you can enjoy many of the most popular festivals, like K-Days in July or the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival in August. Accommodations will cost more during the peak summer months. Edmonton can get quite cold in winter, with typical temperatures ranging between -5°C (23°F) and -15°C (5°F) and snowfall happening as early as November and as late as March. You shouldn’t be afraid of winter, though – it’s a great time to visit if you like skating, skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.

One added bonus to a fall or winter visit is that you might get the chance to see the northern lights . The University of Alberta’s Aurora Watch website monitors aurora activity near Edmonton and can send you alerts. There are festivals year-round, too, so there’s really no bad time to visit. Flying Canoë Volant is a highlight of winter, and the International Children’s Festival in spring is great family fun. Accommodations also tend to cost less during the fall, winter and spring.

What is Edmonton best known for?

As the gateway city to Jasper National Park and the Canadian Rockies, Edmonton is a fast-growing city with a young population compared to other Canadian cities. It’s also known as Canada’s festival city because it hosts more than 50 festivals annually . And you may have heard of its biggest attractions: the beautiful North Saskatchewan River Valley and West Edmonton Mall (the biggest in North America). Edmonton is also a sports-loving city, home to the Edmonton Oilers NHL hockey team and the Edmonton Elks CFL football team. The city used to have the moniker “City of Champions” in honor of its sports teams.

Is it easy to get in and around Edmonton without a rental car?

A rental vehicle is the easiest and most convenient way to get around Edmonton, but you have plenty of other options. The city has a good public transit system with both buses and Light-rail Transit (LRT) services . Uber, taxis and bicycle rentals are also a possibility. If you want to get around on foot, Edmonton is a very walkable city .

How much time should I spend in Edmonton?

Ideally, you should have at least two or three days to explore Edmonton. It won’t be enough time to see everything, but you will be able to see some of the top attractions. If you only have one day, you’ll have time for one or possibly two attractions. Exploring West Edmonton Mall can take a full day, but you might be able to visit two smaller attractions in a single day. With three days, you could visit one of the attractions outside the city, like Elk Island National Park , the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village or Métis Crossing .

How much money do I need for Edmonton?

Compared to other cities, Edmonton is a bargain. Accommodation rates vary depending on the location and the season, but they tend to be higher in the downtown core. Unsurprisingly, you can find some deals if you book early and avoid peak-season travel. Major attractions may charge hefty fees, but there are a lot of free festivals and things to do . There are some great farmers markets and picnic spots if you want to save a buck and still enjoy high-quality local food.

Here are some average daily costs at peak season (in $CAD):

  • Downtown hotel $150-375 per room per night
  • Private double room in a hostel $65 per night
  • Coffee (Tim Hortons or similar) $2
  • Entrée at a midrange restaurant $25-35
  • Glass of wine $8-10
  • Museum admission $14-21
  • Public transit single ticket $2.75 within Edmonton, $5 from the airport to Edmonton
  • Cab fare from Edmonton airport to downtown $62

What food is Edmonton known for?

One of the best things about visiting a place is discovering unique local foods. Green onion cakes were introduced to Edmonton in 1978 when Siu To, an immigrant from northern China, began serving them in his restaurants. These pan-fried pancakes filled with scallions are crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside, and they are so beloved in the city that some have suggested they should be declared Edmonton’s official food. They are served at restaurants around the city and at many festivals, but try the original at Green Onion Cake Man restaurant.

Other foods that should make your must-eat list: perogies, donairs and Alberta beef. There’s a huge Ukrainian and Polish community in Edmonton and some amazing restaurants that make perogies fresh daily. Sample the goods at  Uncle Ed's Ukrainian Restaurant , Taste of Ukraine , Shumka Ukrainian Foods or Widynowski's Sausage House . Next up is the donair, a uniquely Canadian food similar to a Greek Gyro with seasoned shaved rotisserie beef, veggies and special sauce wrapped in a pita. There are over 120 donair restaurants in Edmonton, and  Marco's Famous , Swiss Donair and Top Donair are all good places to try it. Finally, Alberta is famed for its beef (there are more cattle than people in the province), and many restaurants serve up this local specialty with flair.

Where to eat in Edmonton

Edmonton’s food and drink scene is worth traveling for. Dynamic and always evolving, you’ll find some fantastic bakeries, ice cream shops, restaurants, breweries, pubs and bars. For breakfast or brunch, check out The Sugarbowl , where you'll find everything from fresh cinnamon buns to huevos rancheros and Belgian waffles. Duchess Bake Shop is the most famous French bakery in town, serving up amazing macarons, tarts, croissants and éclairs. Farrow Sandwiches is known for its uniquely delicious sandwiches, freshly brewed coffee and delicious baked goods.

Small-batch, hand-crafted ice cream is a thing in Edmonton, and there are several fantastic shops, including Made by Marcus , Kind Ice Cream  and Yelo’d . For local prairie cuisine at its finest – including Alberta beef from an onsite butchery – go to RGE RD . For Asian-inspired food that’s meant to be shared, visit Baijiu , a trendy cocktail bar and eatery in a historical building. Also, take a brewery tour at Monolith , one of the only breweries in North America that offer barrel-aged beer. For cocktails and late-night snacks, check out Fu’s Repair Shop or Bar Clementine , two of the city’s trendiest spots. To get a taste of several different places, go on a food tour with Alberta Food Tours .

Experience Edmonton’s must-see attractions

There are many attractions in Edmonton, and some of them are iconic. It’s hard not to be blown away by West Edmonton Mall . Canada’s largest shopping and entertainment complex has more than 800 stores, a water park, a theme park and much more. The Royal Alberta Museum is Western Canada’s largest museum – a great place to explore history. See 6000 pieces of art from Alberta and around the world at the Art Gallery of Alberta . Experience Canada’s national winter sport at an Edmonton Oilers hockey game at Rogers Place. Enjoy a performance of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra at the Winspear. There are several places to enjoy live theater, but the Citadel Theatre is the city’s premiere facility. Just outside the city, you can enjoy hiking, canoeing, wildlife watching and other outdoor adventures at Elk Island National Park . Herds of bison, elk and more than 250 bird species are found in the park.

An afternoon view of the North Saskatchewan river valley and downtown Edmonton, the capital of Alberta province. Also visible is the train bride connecting the east and west sides of the city. It is the beginning of Autumn and the leaves have just started turning yellow, orange and red.

My favorite thing to do in Edmonton

I love exploring the North Saskatchewan River Valley, often referred to by locals as the Edmonton River Valley – the city’s pride and joy. Take a free ride on the 100 Street Funicular  and embark on an adventure through the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America, an area 22 times bigger than New York City’s Central Park. There are 20 major parks in the river valley, many attractions and more than 99 miles (160km) of trails to explore by running, biking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or on a guided Segway tour; use this handy trail map for exploring.  River Valley Adventure Co is the place to go for Segway tours, mountain bikes, stand-up paddle boards and other sports equipment rentals.

If you prefer to hit the water, grab a canoe or kayak and glide along the North Saskatchewan River. Canoe and kayak rentals and shuttle service are available at Edmonton Canoe .

Download the free app if you’re exploring the six-mile (10km) Edmonton Commonwealth Walkway  to listen to one of five themed audio tours – Indigenous, history, family, river and winter.  There are quite a few attractions in the Edmonton River Valley, including Snow Valley Ski Hill , Snow Valley Aerial Park , Fort Edmonton Park , the Edmonton Valley Zoo , Muttart Conservatory and the John Janzen Nature Center .

Attend a festival in Canada’s festival city

You could plan your entire trip around Edmonton’s festival schedule. Hosting more than 50 festivals every year, Canada’s Festival City celebrates everything from arts and culture to music, food and LGBTQIA+ pride. Check out the Explore Edmonton event calendar to see what’s happening during your stay. Some recommendations in summer include the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival , Edmonton Heritage Festival , Edmonton International Street Performers Festival , Edmonton Folk Music Festival , K-Days , Edmonton Pride Festival  and Cariwest . In winter, Flying Canoe Volant , Silver Skate Festival  and Deep Freeze take the edge off cold days.

Discover the Indigenous side of Alberta’s capital city

Edmonton is located within Treaty No. 6 territory and within the Métis homelands and the Métis Nation of Alberta Region 4. The city has the second largest urban Indigenous population in Canada, and there are many unique opportunities to learn about Indigenous Edmonton. The Indigenous People’s Experience at Fort Edmonton Park is a multi-media experience that tells the stories and shares the cultures of the Indigenous Peoples of this region of Canada. To see the city from an Indigenous perspective, take a tour with Talking Rock Tours . Also consider making a visit to Métis Crossing , an 80-minute drive northeast of Edmonton, where you can learn about Métis culture and enjoy fun activities like paddling a voyageur canoe and taking a wildlife tour to see a sacred white bison.

Resale sellers asking as much as $12K for Stanley Cup final tickets in Edmonton

Tickets are available on resale sites, but they're quite pricey.

An arena filled with people.

Social Sharing

Tickets for all three possible Edmonton games in the Oilers' battle against the Florida Panthers sold out within minutes on Wednesday, with fans clamouring to see the Oilers' first chance in 18 years to win the Stanley Cup.

The Oilers begin the best-of-seven series Saturday night in Florida. Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, 6 will be in Edmonton.

Tickets weren't cheap for people who managed to get them when sales opened at noon MT, with the lowest-priced options still running several hundred dollars.

Fans still hoping to play "La Bamba" for an Oilers win in person can still get seats up for resale, but they'll be shelling out a lot more.

Ticketmaster's cheapest ticket resale options for Game 3 start around $1,200, and some of the prime seats closer to the ice are running as high as $12,000 for Game 6.

  • With Oilers back in Stanley Cup final, fans from Arctic Circle to Philippines celebrate
  • CBC PODCAST Can the Edmonton Oilers end Canada's Stanley Cup drought?

On Wednesday, resale sites StubHub and SeatGeek had individual tickets on sale for around $1,300. Prices were higher in the upper deck, and $2,000 to $3,000 per seat around the ends of the lower bowl.

Edmontonians who aren't planning a trip to Florida to see the away games can still go to Rogers Place for a watch party in the arena — but tickets are now going for $20, up from $5 entry in prior playoff rounds.

The last time the Oilers had a playoff run this deep, in 2006, Edmonton games were still hosted at the city's old north-side arena, then called Rexall Place. Now, NHL action is in Rogers Place downtown, with huge tailgate parties outside the arena in the so-called "Moss Pit."

Restaurant and bar owners downtown say the Oilers mania is showing up at their doors too.

Patrick Kehdy, with the Canadian Brewhouse Group of Companies, said Edmonton hockey fans show up to watch their team no matter what, but the latest playoff excitement is on a different level.

A man stands in front of a bar with TVs showing hockey in the background.

At the Canadian Icehouse directly across from Rogers Place, "Once the Oilers won in Game 6 [against the Dallas Stars], it broke our reservation tracker, pretty much. We had to turn it off," Kehdy said.

"Saturday is going to be bananas here … It's an away game, and we're ready to do as much sales, if not more, than a home game."

A bit farther from the arena, Susan Forsey owns Rocky Mountain Icehouse on Jasper Avenue. She said the pub did two to three times the business of a typical day during the last playoff game.

"Everybody's just thrilled about the Oilers … and going out again, because a lot of people weren't coming back downtown after COVID," she said.

"And now all of a sudden everybody wants to be downtown, and it's nice because downtown had a little bit of a bad rap, unnecessarily."

Playoff success spurs run on Oilers merch

At Edmonton's United Sport and Cycle, general manager Kelly Hodgson says the longer the playoff run lasts, the more Oilers merchandise flies off the shelves.

"Sales and team performance are directly correlated with each other," he said.

"Throughout the course of the season, people would decorate themselves with a jersey or a T-shirt or maybe a ball cap. But when it comes to playoff times, it's the things like the wigs and the chains and the face paint and the temporary tattoos that we start to sell a lot of."

A man with orange and blue streamers on his head stands in front of displays of Edmonton Oilers clothing inside a store.

But while some businesses are reaping the benefits of Edmonton's hockey success now, Concordia University economist Moshe Lander warns against making too much of the economic boost.

"Everybody's going to get their credit card bill from this deep playoff run and they're going to go, 'What are we going to do? How are we going to scale back?'"

Lander said in the big picture, new economic activity isn't being generated — it's just temporarily moving between different types of businesses, with people still left with a finite amount of disposable income.

"There's nothing wrong with enjoying yourself. It's just, let's not make this some sort of economic boom for Edmonton that it's really not."

Hodgson said he notices that in his store too. He's expecting to run out of Oilers jerseys if the series goes all the way to Game 7, which would see Stanley Cup buzz last more than two weeks.

But he said that means people might put off other purchases he'd see from them, like a new mountain bike.

"People only have so much money," he said.

"For right now, some people are saying, 'I need to be involved in the game.'"

Standing in their way will be the Florida Panthers – a team that didn’t exist the previous time the Oilers won a championship – who are back in the final for the second successive year and looking to atone for their 4-1 best-of-seven-series loss to the Vegas Golden Knights last June.

For Edmonton, this is a chance for its latest golden generation, led by captain Connor McDavid and ably assisted by Leon Draisaitl, to deliver on the promise that had seemed assured when the team drafted McDavid first overall in 2015.

What happened the last time the Oilers made the Stanley Cup final?

The Oilers went on a Cinderella run during the playoff series of 2006, eliminating the Presidents’ Trophy-winning Detroit Red Wings in the opening round of the playoffs, before dispatching the San Jose Sharks and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. In so doing, the Edmonton Oilers became the first eighth seed in NHL history to reach the final.

There they ran into the Carolina Hurricanes, but after losing goaltender Dwayne Roloson to a series-ending knee injury in the opening game, the Oilers fell behind 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. However, Edmonton rallied, winning Games 5 and 6 to force a Game 7 in Carolina. That’s when the clock struck midnight, as the Hurricanes claimed the Cup for the first time in their history.

When did the Oilers last win the Stanley Cup?

In some people’s eyes, the Edmonton Oilers represent the NHL’s last true dynasty, winning the Stanley Cup five times in seven years between 1984 and 1990, which was when the team won its most recent championship. In fact, Edmonton is just one of three teams, alongside the Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins, to win five or more Cups since the start of the NHL’s expansion era in 1967-68.

Much of that success can be attributed to one of the greatest collections of talent the hockey world has seen. From the moment they were absorbed into the NHL from the defunct World Hockey Association in 1979, the Oilers already had The Great One, Wayne Gretzky , on their roster, and added to his otherworldly skills by drafting Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey, and goaltender Grant Fuhr. All five are now in the Hall of Fame.

And while Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, Messier inherited the captaincy, and combined with some new additions such as Craig Simpson – now the lead colour commentator for Hockey Night in Canada – and goaltender Bill Ranford, the new-look Oilers steamrolled the Boston Bruins 4-1 to win their fifth title.

No team north of the border has claimed Lord Stanley’s prize in 31 years, not since the Montreal Canadiens overcame Gretzky’s Kings in five games back in the spring of 1993. Canadian teams have come close, though, with the Vancouver Canucks (1994), Calgary Flames (2004), Oilers (2006), Ottawa Senators (2007), Canucks (2011) and Canadiens (2021), all reaching the final before Edmonton’s run this year. And four of those finals went to a seventh game, so it’s surely just a matter of time before the drought comes to an end.

From second last on the points table to within clinching distance of the Cup: Coaching change has catapulted Oilers to the top

Much like the St. Louis Blues in 2019, who went from last place overall around Christmas all the way to a Stanley Cup victory parade, the Oilers’ season looked all but over last November after losing 13 of their first 18 games and sitting second last in the standings.

But a coaching change, in which Kris Knoblauch replaced Jay Woodcroft behind the bench, precipitated a change in fortunes, and now Edmonton is just four wins away from joining the Blues as the only NHL teams to win a title after sitting 10-plus points outside a playoff spot during the regular season.

Final will mark first clash of Oilers and Panthers in a playoff series

As two teams with 4,092 kilometres between them, the Oilers and Panthers will have to travel the furthest between the two host cities in Stanley Cup final history. Given their geographical differences, and the fact they play in opposing conferences, it’s not overly surprising that the 2024 Stanley Cup final is the first time the Oilers and Panthers have met in a playoff series.

However, the Panthers swept the season series, winning 5-3 in Sunrise on Nov. 20 and triumphing 5-1 in Edmonton on Dec. 16.

Which team has home-ice advantage?

Owing to their 110-point season – fifth best in the entire NHL – the Florida Panthers will have home-ice advantage for the Stanley Cup final, so will play host to the Oilers for Games 1 and 2, and possibly Games 5 and 7, if necessary. The Panthers play at the 20,000-seat Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Fla., about 50 kilometres north of Miami.

However, the Oilers have won 12 of their past 14 games in Sunrise, while the Panthers are 11-3 in their past 14 games on home ice, so it remains to be seen whether Florida can maintain that edge at home.

McDavid set for hockey’s grandest stage

After 982 regular-season points, seven 100-point campaigns and more individual NHL awards than most players can dare dream of, Connor McDavid is set to skate in the Stanley Cup final for the first time.

He’ll be more than familiar with Amarant Bank Arena, with the Panthers’ home being the location of the 2015 NHL entry draft where he was taken first overall.

McDavid has led from the front during the Oilers’ playoff push this spring, and leads all scorers with 31 points in 18 games, becoming just the second player in history – behind Gretzky – reach the 30-point mark before the Stanley Cup final on multiple occasions.

Besides McDavid, who are the other standout players for the Oilers?

ertugrul canada tour edmonton

Leon Draisaitl (29) talks with Philip Broberg (86) of the Edmonton Oilers during the third period in Game Four of the Western Conference Final of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs against the Dallas Stars at Rogers Place on May 29, 2024 in Edmonton. Codie McLachlan/Getty Images

The obvious answer is Leon Draisaitl, who is right behind his captain with 28 points in 18 games. But the Oilers are benefiting equally as much from the offence being provided from their blueline by Evan Bouchard, who is third in playoff scoring with 27 points and has become just the sixth defenceman in NHL history to record 20 or more assists in a single playoffs.

In addition, Zach Hyman, who had 54 goals in the regular season to lead the team in that department, has brought his hot hands into the postseason, leading the NHL with 14, which include series-clinching goals against both the Kings in the first round, and the Dallas Stars last Sunday.

And Stuart Skinner has performed admirably in goal, improving to 4-0 in series-clinching games in his career.

Who are the main threats for the Panthers?

Matthew Tkachuk captures much of the attention around the Panthers, for his sandpaper-like play as much as his high-end skills, with which he has led the Panthers in scoring with 19 points in 17 games. But Florida has also received notable contributions from Aleksander Barkov and Carter Verhaeghe, with 17 points each, while the 35-year-old Sergei Bobrovsky could become the third-oldest starting goaltender to win the Cup in the past 50 years, behind Dominik Hasek (2002) and Tim Thomas (2011).

How can you buy tickets?

Tickets went on sale for the games at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Wednesday and sold out within minutes. They are some of the most expensive Oilers tickets in history, with prices soaring to more than $1,000 on the secondary market to sit in the nosebleeds.

The price of admission for the games in Florida are slightly less eye-watering, with tickets to Saturday’s Game 1 beginning at around US$500 on resale sites.

Who are the most recent winners of the Stanley Cup?

The Vegas Golden Knights won the title last year for their first title in franchise history (the team only began play in 2017).

The 10 most recent winners are as follows:

  • 2023 – Vegas Golden Knights 4-1 Florida Panthers
  • 2022 – Colorado Avalanche 4-2 Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2021 – Tampa Bay Lightning 4-1 Montreal Canadiens
  • 2020 – Tampa Bay Lightning 4-2 Dallas Stars
  • 2019 – St. Louis Blues 4-3 Boston Bruins
  • 2018 – Washington Capitals 4-1 Vegas Golden Knights
  • 2017 – Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 Nashville Predators
  • 2016 – Pittsburgh Penguins 4-2 San Jose Sharks
  • 2015 – Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 Tampa Bay Lightning
  • 2014 – Los Angeles Kings 4-2 New York Rangers

Stanley Cup final predictions

Comparing McDavid’s quest for a Stanley Cup to Lionel Messi’s ultimately successful World Cup odyssey, Globe and Mail columnist Cathal Kelly thinks that for Canada to remain the premier hockey country on the planet, the sport’s best player needs a Cup to validate those claims.

So while he doesn’t say that the Oilers are going to win, he advises everyone who wants – or thinks – of Canadian hockey as the best to be rooting for the Oilers.

Can the Edmonton Oilers solve our national hockey crisis?

The Panthers are certainly favoured with the bookmakers to earn their first NHL championship at the third time of asking. But the Oilers, with Stanley Cup pedigree in their franchise DNA, will take some stopping, particularly given their current emphasis on defence, with with they gave up just four goals in the last three games of the Western Conference final, as well as killing 28 consecutive penalties.

How can you watch the games?

In Canada, all the Stanley Cup final games will be broadcast over the air on CBC TV, while for Sportsnet subscribers, it will be on cable, as well as available to stream online at Sportsnet.ca .
