Darts results: Gerwyn Price wins European Darts Open to claim his seventh title on the European Tour

Gerwyn Price won his seventh European Tour title by defeating Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-7 in Sunday's Interwetten European Darts Open final in Leverkusen.

Fresh from winning back-to-back Premier League nights in Nottingham and Newcastle, the Iceman maintained his hot streak of form with a superb display of darts at the Ostermann Arena.

Price had opened his challenge with a 109 average against Krzysztof Ratajski on Saturday , before upping the ante further to 110 in a 6-2 victory over of world champion Michael Smith in Sunday afternoon's third round.

He then overcame his arch-rival Michael van Gerwen 6-4 with an average of 106 to claim the Dutchman's scalp for the third time in a row in all competitions while he again surpassed three figures during a 7-4 triumph over Danny Noppert.

Price couldn't quite reach those same levels against van Duijvenbode in the final (96.28) but he battled hard in a pulsating contest and fired a stunning 108 checkout in the 14th leg to force a decider after the Dutchman missed two match darts.

The Welshman then ran away with it thanks to visits of 100, 180 and 130 before completing his title-winning 12-darter with a 91 finish.

"I'm happy to get the win," said Price, who draws level with Peter Wright on seven European Tour wins.

"I played brilliant darts all weekend apart from the final. It was a slow game - I had to dig in and grind out the win, and without this crowd behind me it's really difficult.

"This weekend the crowd have been fantastic. I'm back in Germany next weekend so hopefully they'll support me again!"

Van Duijvenbode had survived four missed match darts in an equally dramatic semi-final as he hit back from 6-2 down to deny Rob Cross.

The Dutch star had also defeated European Champion Ross Smith and World Youth Champion Josh Rock on Sunday in an impressive run to the decider.

However, he was denied a third ranking title of the year - having already won two Players Championship events - as he narrowly missed out on a maiden European Tour success.

Reflecting on the final, Van Duijvenbode admitted: "I didn't play my best game but I should have won anyway.

"It is what it is. I don't think it should be that close, I could have [had] some bigger distance [between us] at the beginning, and in the end there's no holding him back.

"That's just the class he has. He's never afraid, he takes out the 108."

Cross' agonising wait for a first European Tour title continues following his semi-final exit, despite a sensational 110 average in his third round win over William O'Connor.

Cross also ended the hopes of emerging German youngster Ricardo Pietreczko in the quarter-finals in another contest which went to a deciding leg.

Noppert was the day's other losing semi-finalist, having ended Dave Chisnall's bid to claim successive European Tour wins in the third round before enjoying a 6-4 quarter-final triumph against Damon Heta.

Pietreczko followed up Saturday's memorable win over Peter Wright by seeing off Stephen Bunting 6-3 to reach his first European Tour quarter-final.

Bayer Leverkusen are 2023/24 Bundesliga champions!

Bayer Leverkusen are celebrating their first-ever Bundesliga title after beating Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Xabi Alonso 's side claimed the title on Matchday 29 out of 34 with a  win over Werder Bremen that gives them an unassailable lead at the top of the table ahead of Bayern Munich and  VfB Stuttgart .

Leverkusen have become the first team since Borussia Dortmund in 2011/12 to beat Bayern to a Bundesliga title.

A remarkable  unbeaten run - that's now stretched to 43 games - has seen them claim the honour with games to spare and they can now set their sights on a  possible DFB Cup and UEFA Europa League treble .

Watch: S alute to the new Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen!

european tour leverkusen 2023

Reaction to Leverkusen's title win

DFL CEOs Marc Lenz and Steffen Merkel : "On behalf of the DFL, we would like to offer our heartfelt congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen on winning the Bundesliga championship. Bayer 04 have played incredible attacking football all season long, displaying impressive consistency. The team on the pitch, the coaches, club management, employees and fans have operated as a cohesive unit in a way that has been extraordinary to behold. We are in no doubt that the well-earned first championship title in the club's history is going to be celebrated in style in Leverkusen."

Lenz and Merkel will present the Meisterschale trophy at the BayArena on Matchday 34 after Leverkusen have played their last home match of the season (against FC Augsburg – Saturday 18 May, kick-off at 3:30 p.m. CEST) .

Xabi Alonso , Leverkusen head coach:  "This is a great moment with a top team and a great club. When you win the championship, that's something special. The team has won it for the first time in Leverkusen's history: you have to enjoy that. You have to celebrate with the fans, the families. It's an honour to work for this club."

Florian Wirtz , Leverkusen attacker:  "I still need a little time to get my head around what we have really achieved. You can't imagine something like this ahead of time, especially when you see what happened in the Bundesliga in previous years. At some point you think there could be more (twists) to come."

Paulo Sergio , Bundesliga Legend (121 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen):  "Congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen! What the team has done this season is remarkable and I am so happy for the team, the staff and the whole city of Leverkusen. To get to this point unbeaten, and to win some of the games in the manner that they have, is a phenomenal achievement, and they thoroughly deserve the praise and recognition they are receiving."

Philipp Lahm , Bundesliga Legend & eight-time Bundesliga champion:  "Congratulations to the team of Bayer Leverkusen, to Xabi Alonso and his coaching staff, as well as to the entire club and its fans on a great season. The control of play and the confidence that the team has developed under the leadership of Xabi Alonso are outstanding. A very well-deserved win of the Deutsche Meisterschaft! The old marketing gag "Vizekusen" can finally be laid to rest."

Lothar Matthäus , Bundesliga Legend & seven-time Bundesliga champion:  "Congratulations and hats off to the whole Bayer 04 Leverkusen team. The way Xabi Alonso has built up the team this season is admirable. They have dominated the Bundesliga this year and are still on course for success in the Europa League and the DFB Cup final."

Jürgen Klinsmann , Bundesliga Legend & one-time Bundesliga champion:  "What a fairytale season for Bayer 04 Leverkusen and all of its fans. I can only admire coach Xabi Alonso and his staff with all the players and helpers to such an incredible season. They played the most exciting football all year long and proved game after game that you never give up until the referee blows the final whistle. Huge compliment and congratulations to Bayer 04 Leverkusen."

Seventh heaven for price with interwetten european darts open triumph.

PDC European Tour (Jonas Hunold/PDC)

Gerwyn Price scooped his seventh PDC European Tour title by continuing his brilliant form to win the Interwetten European Darts Open in Leverkusen on Sunday, seeing off Dirk van Duijvenbode 8-7 in a dramatic final.

Price has won back-to-back Cazoo Premier League nights in Nottingham and Newcastle in the past two weeks, and swept aside the field at the Ostermann Arena in an outstanding weekend of darts.

The Welshman had opened his challenge with a 109 average against Krzysztof Ratajski on Saturday, before bettering that display with a 110 mean score in a 6-2 defeat of World Champion Michael Smith in Sunday afternoon's third round.

He then proved too strong for Michael van Gerwen with another stellar display to claim a 6-4 quarter-final win - claiming a third straight victory over the Dutch superstar.

Price averaged over 100 for a fourth straight game as he dispatched Danny Noppert 7-4 in the semi-finals, before seeing off another Dutchman in Van Duijvenbode to claim the title.

The final, though, proved Price's toughest test as he was forced to hit back from 3-1 and 7-6 down - surviving two missed match darts before taking glory.

After Price missed the bull to open up a 2-0 lead, Van Duijvenbode levelled, broke in leg three and then took out 81 on the bull to seize command.

Three straight legs from Price saw him edge back ahead, and the pair were then locked at five-all when the world number four fired in seven perfect darts in an 11-darter to move 6-5 up.

Back-to-back 13-darters saw Van Duijvenbode surge back in front, only for him to miss double 18 and double eight to claim his first European Tour title in leg 14.

Price took out 108 to force a deciding leg, and fired in a fourth 180 of the tie to pull clear before securing the title with a 12-darter.

The PDC European Tour continues from March 31-April 2 with the Interwetten International Darts Open in Riesa, which will see 48 players competing in the year's third £175,000 tournament.

The tournament will be broadcast live on Viaplay, DAZN and PDCTV (excluding Germany, Austria and Switzerland) and through bookmakers' websites worldwide.

PDCTV subscription options include Event Pass and Day Pass packages, as well as Annual and Monthly Subscriptions.

G4D Tour @ THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson: Inside the field

The G4D Tour will stage its first-ever event in conjunction with a PGA TOUR tournament at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, with ten of the world’s best golfers with a disability competing in the United States.

Held at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas, host venue of THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson, on April 29-30, the new event features eight leading males and the top two females in the gross World Rankings for Golfers with a Disability (WR4GD).

Among those aiming to showcase their talent on the global stage are World Number One Kipp Popert, with the Englishman seeking to claim his tenth G4D Tour title.

Joining him in the field for the two-day strokeplay event are American pair Chris Biggins and Ryanne Jackson, who is the only first-time participant on the G4D Tour.

Ahead of the G4D Tour @ CJ Cup Byron Nelson getting underway on Monday, we guide you through the ten inspiring athletes set to tee it up.

Kipp Popert

  • World Ranking (Gross): 1
  • G4D Tour titles: 9
  • Sport Class: Standing 2
  • Impairment: Weakness and spasticity in legs
  • Nationality: English

Born with Cerebral Palsy, Popert is a high-profile advocate for the inclusive power of golf. Despite the physical challenges he has faced growing up and overcoming multiple surgeries, he has reached the summit of the game, thriving on the international stage. Having only first heard about the competitive opportunities open to talented golfers with a disability in 2019 through EDGA, formerly known as the European Disabled Golf Association, he has since won around the world, including on no fewer than nine occasions since the launch of the G4D Tour in 2022. An inspiration to many, he competed in the Amateur Championship - organised by The R&A - last summer and challenged himself in events alongside leading professionals. Won the US Adaptive Open - established by the USGA - last summer and claimed further silverware on his most recent G4D Tour start in Kenya earlier this year.

Brendan Lawlor

  • World Ranking: 2
  • G4D Tour titles: 1
  • Sport Class: Standing 3
  • Impairment: Short stature and limbs
  • Nationality: Irish

One of the most recognised golfers with a disability worldwide, Lawlor was born with a rare condition called Ellis-van Creveld syndrome, characterised by a shorter stature and shorter limbs. Since playing in his first EDGA event in 2017, the Irishman has competed around the world with great distinction. Having turned professional in 2019, he made history by becoming the first player with a disability to compete on the DP World Tour at the ISPS HANDA UK Championship in August 2020. Despite having won numerous EDGA titles over the years, including guiding his nation to win the European Team Championship in 2022, he had to wait until the inaugural G4D Open to claim his first G4D Tour title as he edged out Popert for victory. He has finished second and third in his two starts on the G4D Tour so far this season.

Chris Biggins

  • World Ranking: 3
  • G4D Tour titles: 0
  • Nationality: American

The American, who has Cerebral Palsy, will hope playing on home soil can lead to his maiden title on the G4D Tour after a series of strong results. With top-five finishes in his last three G4D Tour starts, he is among the most consistent performers in the game. He claimed victory at the EDGA Cazoo Classic in 2021, which coincided with an event on the DP World Tour at London Golf Club. Away from competition, he is the director of player development at The Country Club of Birmingham, Alabama. In that role, the 2019 US Disabled Open Golf Championship winner coaches youngsters.

Juan Postigo Arce

  • World Ranking: 4
  • G4D Tour titles: 2
  • Sport Class: Standing 1
  • Impairment: Leg length difference
  • Nationality: Spanish

Born without much of his right leg and no knee, the incredibly talented Spaniard is another of the leading ambassadors in the game. Born in the same part of Northern Spain as Seve Ballesteros, he has received widespread acclaim and continues to play an important role in raising awareness about the great number of players with a disability competing competitively. A proven champion, having been a three-time successive winner of the EDGA’s European Championship, Postigo Arce has since won twice on the G4D Tour – with both occasions coming last season in Abu Dhabi and Sweden respectively. He competed in the ‘Champions Challenge’ on the eve of The 150th Open at St Andrews in 2022.

Juan Postigo Arce

Kurtis Barkley

  • World Ranking: 6
  • Impairment: Spinal stiffness
  • Nationality: Canadian

One of four players in action this week without a victory on the G4D Tour, Barkley was born with scoliosis (curvature of the spine). Having grown up in the countryside in Williamsburg, Ontario, he has since become one of the leading golfers with disability, sharing a locker room with Rory McIlroy. In a Player Blog with the DP World Tour last year, Barkley revealed he has learned to live in “constant pain” with muscles aches and arthritis making sleeping a challenge. Proud to compete against the best on a global stage, the Canadian arrives in America with five top-three finishes in his last six G4D Tour starts, with his next goal to claim an elusive first win.

Mike Browne

  • World Ranking: 7
  • Impairment: Amputation above knee

Like his counterparts, Browne’s story is inspiring. A former soldier, the Englishman had his left left leg amputated from the knee down following an infection that arose after a training accident almost a decade ago. Despite only starting to play golf in 2014, he turned professional in 2016. One of the longest drivers in the world, he first tasted success on the G4D Tour during its inaugural season in Ireland in 2022. A second followed last year over Jumeirah Golf Estates’ renowned Earth Course in Dubai, where he was the only player in the field to finish under par in the weather shortened event.

To view a full profile on Mike Browne produced by EDGA, click here .

Tommaso Perrino

  • World Ranking: 8
  • Impairment: Weakness and stiffness of the lead leg
  • Nationality: Australian

Perrino competed against Major champion and compatriot Francesco Molinari as a boy but a motor-scooter accident aged 18 curtailed his progress. Already a winner on the G4D Tour, having won in Northern Ireland in 2022, he has since become one of the most consistent performers. In 2023, he recorded top-five finishes in five consecutive G4D Tour appearances and became the first Italian to win the EGA’s European Championship for Golfers with Disability in the Netherlands last July. Featured in the All-Star Match ahead of the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club alongside Popert and fellow sportsmen such as Novak Djokovic and Gareth Bale.

Tommaso Perrino-1676140196

Lachlan Wood

  • World Ranking: 9

When aged 16, Wood was seriously injured in a car accident, resulting in his left leg being held together by 14 screws and a metal plate, while he has so far faced more than 40 surgeries. The leading player on the established World Ranking for Golfers with Disability from Australia, he is looking to continue his impressive start to the 2024 G4D Tour campaign. He secured his maiden win at the ISPS HANDA Australian All Abilities Championship in December, before finishing runner-up to Popert in Kenya in February.

Daphne van Houten

  • World Ranking: 22
  • Nationality: Dutch

A routine physical screening at just 12 years old found a life-changing issue in Van Houten’s back. She became the first woman to break into the top ten of the World Ranking for Golfers with Disability in mid-2019. Was part of the inaugural field on the G4D Tour at The Belfry in 2022 and made her most recent appearance in Kenya. She won the European Golf Association’s Champion Women Golfer with Disability in 2018 and is key member of the Dutch national set up. Her golfing hero is compatriot Anne van Dam, who plays on the Ladies European Tour and LPGA.

Ryanne Jackson

  • World Ranking: 66
  • Impairment: Muscle weakness in arms and legs

Jackson has Muscular Dystrophy, a condition which causes the muscles in her shoulders and legs to weaken over time. While she first picked up a club at the age of two, it was when she was six that she began the play sport regularly and declared herself a 'lefty' despite being right-handed. Coached from a young age by her father, like both her older sisters, her diagnosis only came in her freshman year a college after struggling to understand the cause of physical tiredness she suffered from. Won the US Adaptive Open at Pinehurst last summer and is now set for her debut on the G4D Tour.

The 2024 G4D Tour schedule comprises nine tournaments held in six different countries and includes a major championship with The G4D Open in May, which is run in partnership by The R&A and the DP World Tour.
