How to fast travel in valheim.

Players will need to craft portals to travel around the Viking world quickly. Here are the materials they'll need to fast travel in Valheim.

Gamers can be a lazy bunch at times— most evident in their rampant over-use of the fast travel mechanic in open-world RPGs . Need to get back to the camp? Fast travel. Need to speak with this NPC that's a five-minute walk away— maybe you'll even find a cool dungeon or building you've since missed? Nah, fast travel. It's a mechanic that players will never be able to live without, as much as they may not care to admit it. Don't worry,  Valheim fans. There is a way to zip around the vast open-world.

Valheim , at first, will have players using their two legs to get around the map and collect items. However, there is a way to establish links between discovered areas to make going back-and-forth much easier. This will all be done with portals, a craftable item in Valheim . Players will have to scrounge up the necessary materials to make their portals, but their lives will become much more comfortable once they do. Here's how to craft portals and fast travel in Valheim .

Valheim - How to Fast Travel

Portals are going to be a player's best friend when it comes to fat traveling around Valheim . The early stages of the game will have them venturing around on foot. Once players reach the Bronze Age, they'll be able to craft as many portals as their heart desires. To reach the Bronze Age, players will have to defeat the game's first boss, Eikthyr, a massive black stag with electrified antlers.

After Eikthyr falls, players will enter into the Bronze Age and be on the next step of their portal-creation quest. They'll need a Pickaxe to mine ores and a Bronze Axe to farm wood. Here is the full list of materials they'll need:

  • Fine Wood (20)
  • Greydwarf eyes (10)
  • Surtling Cores (2)

Players will find themselves in the Black Forest, where Greydwarfs are plenty. Slay them and steal their eyes (because they don't need those anymore). Players will also want to seize this opportunity to mine copper and tin from around the Black Forest to craft bronze weapons and armor. It's a classic 'two Greydwarfs, one sword' situation.  Most importantly, they'll need to craft a Bronze Axe.

Using the Bronze Axe, start cutting down Birch and Oak Trees in the Black Forest to farm Fine Wood. The last thing players will need to collect are two Surtling Cores found on Surtlings in the Swamp biome. Once players have gathered the necessary resources, they'll be able to craft a portal where they stand. Portals will link between each other, so it's ideal to place them near your multiple houses, encampments, and material farming areas (like the Black Forest)

Valheim is a massive game and is only in its Early Access Beta. However, don't let the words 'Early Access' discredit this title. The current version is massive, with plenty of areas to explore, weapons to craft, and beasts to slay. Strap on that Viking helmet and stake your claim in Valheim.

How to fast travel in Valheim with portals

Now you're thinking with portals. Magic Viking portals!

Valheim portal

Want to know how to craft Valheim portals, and understand how they work? Valheim is a big open world, and with no traditional fast travel system players are restricted to running or sailing to get around the expansive map. It can take quite a while to do some exploring and then get back safely to your home base.

But there is one way to cross great distances in just a few seconds, by using a portals. Portals are structures you build, not find, and there are a few important limits to what you can bring through them.

How to craft portals

Portals are craftable items in the "Misc" tab of your hammer's crafting menu. Crafting a portal requires having a workbench in range, and these resources in your inventory:

  • 10 graydwarf eyes
  • 20 fine wood
  • 2 surtling cores

How portal tags work

Once you've built and placed a portal, interact with it using E to set a tag. A pane will open that can be typed into.

You'll need to construct another portal that shares the same tag in order to use the portal for fast travel. For instance, if you build a portal at your base, and one in the Swamp, and tag them both "Swamp" you'll be able to travel back and forth between those two portals by stepping through them.

Both portal tags must match for the portals to activate, and tags are case-sensitive. Any player can set or change a portal tag, even if they didn't construct the portal.

As long as two portals share the same tag, they will be connected. So, if you have a portal in the Plains tagged "Plains" and a portal in the Swamp tagged "Swamp" and a third portal at your base, you can edit your base portal's tag to "Plains" or "Swamp" depending on which location you want to travel to. Or, you can build a fourth portal at your base, so you have two pairs of dedicated portals for both Swamp and Plains active at all times.

Some items can't go through portals

Before you start thinking your travel challenges are solved, you should know certain items can't go through portals. If you placed a portal near a metal deposit and thought you could load up and fast travel back to base—you can't. Ore and metal bars can't be taken through portals.

Here's the list of what you can't bring through a portal:

  • Tin ore, and tin
  • Copper ore, and copper
  • Iron ore, and iron
  • Silver ore, and silver
  • Black metal scrap

It seems a bit arbitrary, considering you can fashion bronze into armor and weapons and take those through a portal just fine, but bronze bars can't go through if they're in your pockets. But I suspect the Valheim devs want you to have to travel on foot, by boat, and use carts to haul your metal spoils around. Otherwise, getting around in Valheim might be just too easy once you've got a few portals built.

But even without being able to transport metals, portals are incredibly useful. In a procedurally generated world with different biomes, including vast and dangerous oceans, making a trip to a new part of the world can be a harrowing journey by foot or by ship. Once you reach some far flung spot, being able to craft a portal and travel there quickly and easily is a boon to any Viking.

Valheim Portal Guide Fast Travel Teleport

Valheim — How to craft a Portal for fast travel

Image of Jason Rodriguez

A lot of open-world games nowadays have a fast travel system. Thankfully, Valheim also has one, though it can take a while before you can get it up and running. Here’s our guide to help you with the Portal structure for fast traveling.

Note: Valheim is currently an Early Access title. As such, mechanics and content may change in due course. For more information, check out our Valheim guides and features hub .

Valheim : Fast traveling via the Portal

Once you’ve obtained a piece of fine wood, you’ll unlock the Portal recipe. It can be built anywhere on land as long as you have a Workbench nearby.

Anyway, you do need a few materials for a single Portal:

  • 20x Fine Wood – Chopping these down requires a bronze axe (or a rampaging troll).
  • 2x Surtling Core – These are usually obtained while exploring Burial Chambers .
  • 10x Greydwarf Eye – Greydwarf mobs in the Black Forest biome drop these. You could even look for Greydwarf Nests in the region (seen in the image below). These regularly spawn more Greydwarf-type mobs so you can happily farm the resource.

Valheim Portal Guide Fast Travel Teleport 1

I mentioned that those materials are just for one Portal, right? Well, you actually need two Portals since they’ll be connected to each other. As such, double the number of resources I listed above for each pair.

All right, once you’ve built your first Portal, choose a name for it. Then, head to a point of interest that you’ll often come back to such as Haldor’s campsite. Construct another Workbench here as well as your second Portal. Choose the same name for this, too.

Vlh Pr Fstrv 1

Since the tags are similar, these two devices will be connected. You’ll be able to fast travel back and forth these areas with ease. Just remember that you can’t bring along any ores or smelted bars with you.

Note: Only two structures may be connected to each other. If you build a third and set the same name/tag, it won’t work. As such, you’ll need to craft another pair if ever you need to teleport to a different location.

Valheim is available on Steam as part of the Early Access program. For more information, check out our guides and features hub .

Valheim portals

Valheim ’s world is big, and lugging your resources from place to place can get exhausting — even with boats like karves and longships . Luckily, Valheim allows you to build portals and link two locations with a teleporter.

This guide will tell you what you need to build a portal and teach you how they work.

Building portals

Picking up your first piece of fine wood unlocks the ability to build portals (10 greydwarf eyes, 20 fine wood, 2 surtling cores) .

  • Greydwarf eyes are drops when you kill greydwarfs in the meadows, black forest, and swamp biomes.
  • Fine wood comes from birch trees in meadows and black forest biomes. You need a bronze axe or better to cut them down.
  • Surtling cores are found in burial chambers in the black forest biome.

Since portals need to be paired, we recommend always building one near your favorite base camp, and then exploring with enough resources to build a second. That way you’ve got a quick way home to regroup or a quick way back to the frontier when you die.

Linking portals

Portals have a direction. The front — the side you’ll exit from — has runes carved into it. There’s also a branch sticking out one side that’s a little lower. Put that lower branch on your right, and you will be facing the portal’s opening.

When you place a portal, interact with it to tag it. Type a word or name you’ll remember — this is what will link two portals to one another. Try to make it something descriptive and specific. Tags are case sensitive.

Valheim guide: From Eikthyr to The Elder walkthrough

Add a marker to your map with a portal’s tag. That way, you’ve got an easy reference when you inevitably forget.

When you build a second portal, tag it with the same word. After a second, it will link to your first one, glow bright orange, and you can teleport. (If it doesn’t seem to update, take a step back and approach it again.

Only two portals can share the same tag. If you tag a third portal with the same word, one of the first two will be disconnected. Based on our testing, the one that disconnects seems random.

Metal prevents you from using portals

Valheim guide: From Eikthyr to The Elder walkthrough

Some items — specifically raw metal and ores — can’t be teleported. Think of it as going through an airport scanner or, you know, Terminator rules. After a metal has been turned into another item like a weapon or armor, it’s safe to travel with.

You can see what items can and can’t go through a portal in your inventory. Items that won’t teleport have a little portal icon with a red X through it in the upper right corner of their slot. There will also be a note in the item description.

Valheim Portals: How to Craft a Portal and Fast Travel

Image of Justin Michael

Valheim is a survival game that boasts an expansive, procedurally-generated map that sometimes sees you traveling its lands and oceans at great distance in search of resources. While there is no true fast travel system in place, and your mighty longship will get you to your destination, there are portals to speed things up. Once you build a pair, you can travel from one point to another in an instant.

In this Valheim guide, we’re going to cover portals: how to build them, how they work, and what their limitations are.

How to Craft a Portal

You’ll find the recipe for building this fast travel device in the “Misc” tab of the crafting menu. It becomes available after you pick up your first piece of fine wood.

To craft one, you will need:

  • 10x Grewdwarf eyes
  • 20x Fine wood
  • 2x Surtling core

You get fine wood by using the bronze axe to chop down oak and birch trees in the Black Forest and Meadows biomes. Alternatively, you can chop up wood from any beached ships you come across.

You’ll find greydwarf eyes by killing greydwarf enemies in the Black Forest, and surtling cores can be found in burial chambers/tombs in the same regions.

It’s important to mention that these are the needed resources for one gate; you’ll need two of them to have a complete connection. You’ll also need to build the portal within the area of a workbench.

How Do Portal Tags Work?

After you’ve gathered your resources and built your first portal at your main base, you now need to give it a tag.

The tag is the key that will connect your portals to one another and can be entered by pressing the “E” and typing in a tag. As long as two jump points share the same tag, they will be connected.

For example, if you have one in the mountains tagged “mountains,” one in the swamp tagged “swamp,” and a third at your base, you can edit the base jump point tag to “mountains” or “swamp” depending on which location you want to travel to.

Additionally, you could also just build an additional portal at your base, having two pairs of dedicated fast travel points for the mountains and swamp active at all times.

Your tags are also case sensitive , so if one is labeled “Mountains” and another is labeled “mountains,” they will not connect to each other.

fast travel valheim

You Shall Not Pass!

Now, before you go willy-nilly building portals everywhere, you should know that they’re not without their drawbacks. Resources like copper  and  tin  cannot be transported through a portal. In fact, none of the following items can:

  • Tin ore/ingot
  • Copper ore/ingot
  • Iron ore/ingot
  • Silver ore/ingot
  • Black metal scraps

While it is unfortunate that portals can’t be used to streamline the procurement of metals, it doesn’t make them a pointless novelty. In a procedurally-generated world like Valheim, there can be vast distances between biomes and they can help shorten the gap.

Instead of trudging through the swamp or slowly sailing your way across the ocean in this Early Access title from Coffee Stain Publishing and Iron Gate Studio, these gates help you get where you’re going faster and encourage you to build out settlements across the map like a true Viking! They’re especially helpful after you find Haldor the Merchant , providing a quick way to access his location and wares. If you’re new to playing Valheim , consider checking out our  starter help guide , base construction guide , or article on why fishing is important .

Valheim: How To Unlock & Craft Portals | Fast Travel Guide

Now you're thinking with portals.

fast travel valheim

Portals give you the power to quickly travel vast distances in Valheim . With the right portal placement, you’ll never be too far from your home base. That’s good news, because if you want to progress up those technology tiers, you’ll have to explore the vast wilderness of this mythological realm. There’s no way to find better ores (and new crafting recipes) without leaving the safety of your first biome.

And that’s why Portals aren’t just needed, they’re basically required. If you’re wondering how to unlock the portal recipe and start warping around the world with ease, we’ve got all the details below. Earning the portal is a whole quest — you’ll need to defeat the first boss, use your first pickaxe, and forge ingots to make an improved axe before you’ll even be able to begin.

Learn the ins-and-outs of portals in Valheim with the full guide below.

How To Unlock The Portal Crafting Recipe

The Portal is unlocking in your hammer build menu once you obtain your first Fine Wood material. Getting Fine Wood isn’t easy — you’ll need to complete multiple early steps in the game before you’re able to start harvesting Fine Wood from Birch and Oak trees in the Meadow biome .

  • Use the stones at your spawn point to locate a Mystical Altar . Sacrifice x3 Deer Trophies to summon the boss.
  • Defeat Eikthyr to gain x3 Hard Antler — which you can use to craft the Antler Pickaxe . Use the Antler Pickaxe to mine Copper and Tin Ore in the Black Forest .
  • Construct a Forge , and then combine x2 Copper and x1 Tin to create x1 Bronze Ingot .
  • Once you have bronze, you’ll be able to construct the Bronze Axe . Now you can cut down the white trees in the Meadows biome and unlock Fine Wood crafting recipes .

There are other ways to get Fine Wood. You can lure Trolls to smash and attack the trees until you can collect the wood, or you can loot the wrecked ships on the water of the Black Forest to find Fine Wood. Either way, once you get Fine Wood, you’ll be able to craft Portals.

How To Craft Portals

  • Portal Materials : Under “Misc” — x20 Fine Wood, x10 Greydwarf Eyes, x2 Surtling Core

Greydwarf Eyes drop from Greydwarf enemies. You’ll find plenty of them in the Black Forest biome . Surtling Cores drop from Surtlings , which are found in the Swamps biome .

Portals can be found under the “Misc” category when using the Hammer. They need to be build within range of a Workbench to function correctly.

All metals and metal ores ( Tin, Copper, Bronze, Iron, Silver, etc ) prevent travelling through a portal. You’ll have to walk metal ore back to your bases on foot. Other materials like wood and your weapons / armor can be transported through portals. Dragon Eggs are also prohibited from travelling through portals.

How The Portals Works

To travel through a portal, you’ll need to build two . Each portal is connected via tag — press [E] on a portal to type in a case-sensitive tag. Any two portals with the same tag are connected.

Portals allow you to quickly travel between two far-off locations. There are downsides — like I said above, you can’t move any metals or metal ores through portals. If you build an outpost on the other side of the portal and craft weapons / armor, then you can freely travel through the portal. Don’t ask me why. It’s just Metal Ore / Ingots you can’t transport.

Let’s go over some ways you can make the most use out of your portals.

Portal Tips & Tricks

  • Don’t forget that tags are case-sensitive.
  • Bring the materials needed to build a portal with you before attempting any tough challenges. Having a portal is incredibly useful for attempting tough bosses like the Elder or Bonemass. Plop down your portal if you think you’re going to die — it can be a life-saver just giving yourself access to food and health potions.

How to build portals and fast travel - Valheim

Learn how to craft portals and fast travel around the world in Valheim.

Josh Hawkins

Each world in Valheim is massive and getting places can be grueling—especially when you aren’t properly equipped to navigate the more difficult biomes. Luckily, you can craft special portals, which you can then link together to help make moving around the world much easier. This allows you to use a fast travel system similar to many other games, and you’ll find it exceptionally useful, especially as you expand your exploration efforts.

How to build Portals and fast travel - Valheim

Portals are a very important part of traveling in Valheim, especially if you don’t want to have to run long distances every time you need to visit another one of your bases or die while fighting powerful mobs in the different areas of the world. Thankfully, crafting a Portal isn’t all that difficult, though there are a couple of key items you’ll need to unlock along the way.

A portal in Valheim

First, you’re going to need to get yourself a Bronze Axe. Bronze can be made by combining 2x Copper with 1x Tin . You’ll then need the following materials at a Forge to create a Bronze Axe:

  • 2x Leather Scraps

When you’ve crafted your Bronze Axe, you can then chop down Birch and Oak trees, which will reward you would Fine Wood. Gathering just one piece of Fine Wood will unlock the Portal recipe, allowing you to use a Hammer to place down Portals. Like most of the other crafting stations you can build, you’ll need to be within a Workshop’s range to build a Portal.

Building a Portal will require a variety of materials, which we’ve broken down below:

  • 20x Fine Wood
  • 2x Surtling Core (found in Burial chambers in the Black Forest)
  • 10x Greydwarf Eye (found by killing Greydwarf mobs in the Blake Forest)

The important thing to remember here, though, is that you will need a second Portal in order to fast travel. Because of this, we recommend putting down a single Portal at your main base and then heading to the location that you want to set up a secondary Portal.

How to build a Portal and fast travel - Valheim

When you’ve built two Portals you can connect them in one of two ways—first, you can simply leave the name blank and it will connect to any other Portal that is currently uncategorized. If you want to name a Portal something specific—we usually name ours based on where they are in the world, for example, we have a portal named Bonemass because it takes us right to the swamp near the Bonemass Spawn in our world—then you can select the Portal by looking at it and enter the name. Just remember that the Portal back at your base will need to be named the same thing if you want to connect it.

This naming convention has led to many players setting up Portal hubs at the bases, which allows them to have one main Portal that they can always connect to, as well as different Portals named for their other Portals that they’ve set up around the world.

Now that you know how to build Portals and fast travel, make sure you check out our other Valheim guides like how to find Silver. It’s also worth nothing that there are certain items that can’t pass through Portals—like Ores and Metals—so you’re going to need to travel the old-fashioned way if you want to take those back to your base.

Valheim – How to Fast Travel

Image of Victor Vellas

After spending dozens of hours running around in the huge worlds of Valheim , or sat on top of your Raft for who knows how long while traversing through waters, I bet you started wondering if there is any other way to go from place to place, like a Fast Travel feature or something similar. If you did, well good for you since this function is indeed available. It needs some farming to get started though, since you will need to crate yourself some Portals .

How to Fast Travel with Portals.

In order to Fast Travel to different areas, you first need to create a Portal to each location. To do so, you need to enter the Bronze Age by defeating the first Boss Eikthyr , craft a Pickaxe and find some Ores. Here is the exact list of materials needed for the Portal:

  • Fine Wood x20
  • Greydwarf eyes x10
  • Surtling Cores x2

The easiest of the lot to find would be the Greydwarf Eyes, which can easily be obtained by killing a bunch of those creatures . While you are into this, make sure to grab yourself some Copper and Tin from the veins all over the Black Forest area, in order to create the Bronze Axe and farm Birch and Oak trees for Fine Wood . Lastly, the Surtling Cores can be obtained from Surtlings, which can be found in the Swamp biome.

After having all of the above, create your Portals and place them anywhere you wish to travel back and forth. The most ideal way of utilizing these super handy structures, would be to place them near your multiple houses, if you have built indeed some. They make traveling around so much easier, you’d be questioning yourself how you managed to get around all this time without using them.

Valheim is now available through Steam Early Access .

Valheim: How to Fast Travel & Build a Portal

Image of Alex Gibson

The world of Valheim is vast and filled with danger, which means you won’t always relish the prospect of traveling long distances on foot. Luckily, there’s an option to eliminate most of the legwork so long as you’ve built the correct equipment. Here’s how to fast travel and build a portal in Valheim.

How to Build a Portal

You can build a portal in Valheim fairly early on in the game, though first, you will need to craft a Bronze pick-ax since you will have to harvest Fine Wood.

You’ll also need to defeat Elkthyr, the first boss in the game, since it is only afterward that you’re directed to the Black Forest by the crow. This area is where you’ll find skeleton guards who protect the entrances to many small dungeons found throughout the biome. Defeating them is important for your portal since they drop Surtling Cores.

The full list of ingredients required to forge bronze tools are as follows:

  • x20 Fine Wood
  • x10 Greydwarf eyes
  • x2 Surtling Cores

How to Fast Travel in Valheim

Now you can build your portal entrance/exit, which you should probably consider doing nearby your settlement. Of course, you’ll also need to plan where the second entrance/exit will be located.

Once you have crafted two portals, you can then teleport from one to the other.

However, it should be noted that there are some caveats. First, you can’t build an entrance/exit nearby a hostile area such as Troll Caves. Second, precious materials, including certain ores, cannot travel with you. Only basic resources, such as wood, will be able to teleport along with you.

Anything that isn’t able to teleport with you will be immediately lost from your inventory after entering the portal.

That’s everything you need to know about  how to fast travel and build a portal in  Valheim . For more tips and tricks on the game, be sure to search for  Twinfinite .

How To Fast Travel

You can place portals all over the place in Valheim to make travel easier.

You'll want to craft a bronze tool which can be achieved by defeating Elkthyr.

We've created a guide to make it as easy as possible, check that out here .

You'll need a Bronze Axe.

The items required for the portal are:

  • 20 Fine Wood
  • 10 Greydwarf eyes
  • 2 Surtling Cores

Of all three items, the Greydwarf eyes will be the easiest to get.

Attack Greydwarf enemies throughout the black forest and they will drop them.

Use a Bronze Axe to cut down birch trees, they're tougher than normal trees hence having to use a Bronze Axe.

You'll get the Fine Wood you need from them.

Now we need to make some Surtling Cores.

Head to a Swamp biome and find Surtlings, they will drop the cores.

Combine all of these items and you will be able to create a portal!

Valheim is the next Viking title to take Steam by storm, there are plenty of plans for the future with the 2021 roadmap . You can even set up a dedicated server and play with your friends in coop ! If bosses interest you, there's already four in the game Eikthyr , the Elder , Bonemass and Modor , you'll require plenty of items along the way like the Swamp Key .

Valheim Portals - How to Use and Build Portal & Fast Travel

Home » Valheim » Valheim Portals – How to Use and Build Portal & Fast Travel

Portals in Valheim are objects that you can build in order to fast travel, or teleport, across the map. Making Portals and allowing yourself to teleport makes traversing the world significantly easier. The ability to fast travel in Valheim lets you, for example, jump back into a boss battle way more quickly, jump back to base to resupply, or get to your grave faster. So, how does one build and use Portals to teleport? Well, that’s what we’ll be showing you in our Valheim Portals – How to Use and Build Portal & Fast Travel guide.

How to Use Portals in Valheim

To use Portals in Valheim and teleport, first, put one down. We’ll explain how to do that in detail below. Then, interact with it by highlighting it and pressing “E.” This will bring up the option to tag the portal; or name it, if you will. So, name it whatever you want.

After you’ve done that, go to the location where you want to build the second portal. Interact with it, and give it the exact same name as you did in the first one. Capitalization and spacing is important. So, if you’ve named the first portal Funky_Chicken, the other one has to have the exact same capitalization and everything else.

Naming the portals the same thing connects them. All you have to do now is walk through one of them, and you’ll find yourself on the other side. It’s as simple as that to fast travel in Valheim. Just keep in mind that certain materials, like Copper, Tin, Bronze , Iron, Black Metal , Silver and Dragon Eggs can’t be teleported.

Now, if you’re building Valheim Portals that have similar names (say, you build more than one in the Swamp), it can get a little difficult to keep track of them all. To counter that, we recommend writing in the name of every solo portal on the world map, solo portal here being shorthand for any portal leading from your base into the wild.

How to Build Portal in Valheim

To build Portals in Valheim, you need unlock the crafting recipe, get all the necessary resources, and have a workbench nearby. As far as we can tell, the recipe for the Portals becomes available the first time you discover Fine Wood, which drops from Birch and Oak trees in the Meadows. That, of course, is one of the ingredients for making a Portal. These are the things you’ll need:

  • 20 Fine Wood
  • 10 Greydwarf Eyes
  • 2 Surtling Cores

Once you have all the materials you need, pick a place to put your Portal. Take out your hammer, right-click to enter the crafting menu, and go into the Misc tab. From there, select the Portal and left-click to put it down where you choose. You’re one step closer to the Valheim teleport

How to Destroy Portals

To destroy Portals in Valheim, all you have to do is take out your Hammer tool and highlight it. Then, press the middle mouse button to get to delete the Portal and get your crafting materials back. Just keep in mind that you might need a workbench in the vicinity. Also, in order to return all your resources, make sure to have the Portal fully repaired first.

If you’re not too pressed about getting your mats back, you can just destroy your Portal “manually;” that is to say, take an axe or hammer as a weapon to it. In case you have time to spare, there’s also the option to just let it rot. All buildings in Valheim degrade over time, and the same goes for fast travel Portals.

How to fast travel and create a portal in Valheim

Image of Zack Palm

You spend quite a bit of time in Valheim running around and trying to move from one location to the next. Exploring can feel a bit like a chore. Even if you use the raft to travel by river, making it back home can be complicated. There’s a quick way you can return to your house after a long journey, but you need to be able to find specific items that drop from certain creatures.

You can create a portal in multiple locations all over Valheim. The primary way to do this is when you start crafting bronze tools, which you’ll be able to do after you complete the task of learning to craft your first pickaxe, defeating the first boss, Elkthyr, and obtaining some ore. These are the primary components you need to make it.

  • 20 Fine Wood
  • 10 Greydwarf eyes
  • 2 Surtling Cores

The Greydwarf eyes are likely the easiest to find—these drop off of the Greydwarf enemies that you’ll regularly encounter when traveling in the black forest. The black forest is also the location where you’ll be able to find copper and tin. Once you obtain those resources, you can make a bronze axe, and you’ll be able to chop down beech trees. These trees are tougher than the birch, and after you obtain the fine wood, you’ll obtain the portal recipe for the first time.

Those are the two big resources. Next, you’ll need to create two surtling core. These drop from Surtlings and they’re a bit tricky to find in the Swamp biome. After you have all of those items, you can place a portal at your ideal location and then use it to travel back to a set location you have in Valheim, making traveling significantly easier.

How to Run/Move Faster in Valheim

There are 2 main ways that you can run faster in Valheim and a few different ways to travel faster in general. You can sprint by holding down the Left Shift key. By training your Run skill you will be able to sprint faster and faster as you gain more levels in the skill. We will go over some of the ways that you can move and explore faster in Valheim in depth below.

Sprinting in Valheim

As aforementioned in the paragraph above, players can make use of the sprint key in order to move significantly faster than jogging. To sprint, hold down the left shift key. While you are sprinting there will be a stamina drain o your character, so naturally the more stamina you have, the longer you will be able to move faster by sprinting. Many players also don’t know that by sheathing the weapon in your hand, you are able to move faster. If you press the R key by default your character will sheath the weapons or put them on their back. This will make you move faster.

Raising the Run Skill Level to Move Faster

There are many different skills available to the player in Valheim. One of these skills determines how fast the player is able to move when they are using the sprint mechanic. By opening up the menu and accessing the skills list by clicking the symbol that looks like triangles stuck together, you can see all the different skills available to you and how much experience you have in each skill. The skill we are looking for is the Run skill.

Looking at the run skill in valheim

When you hover over the name of each skill you will be able to see a brief description of each skill. The run skill has a description that reads “Speed and stamina drain when running.” By levelling up this skill you will increase the sprinting speed that your character moves at when the left shift button is held down and reduce the amount of stamina that is used when sprinting.

The way you increase this skill is just by running around. You will get a small amount of run skill whenever you use the sprint function. For a list of all skills and how to train them, check out this guide.

Using a Teleporter to Fast Travel in Valheim

Once you have beaten the first forsaken of the game, Eikthyr, you will unlock the ability to craft an axe that can be used to gather fine wood. By combining 20 Fine Wood, 10 Greydwarf Eye and 2 Surtling Cores the player will be able to create a Portal. By creating 2 portals and linking them together the player will be able to travel between them. There is no limit to how many times the portal can be used and the only restriction in place for fast travelling with portals is that metals cannot be brought through the portal.

Fast Travel in Valheim using the Portal and connecting 2 of them together

To connect 2 portals together you must give them the same name as each other. You can do this by first crafting the portal and then interacting with it using the ‘E’ key by default.

Travel By Boat!

Being a Viking inspired game it would be incredibly strange if it didn’t feature any kind of nautical travel. Luckily you can craft 3 different types of boats to get around in the world of Valheim. As the Valheim map is an archipelago of islands you will need to craft a boat at some point in order to advance in the game. The raft is the first type of sea vessel than can be crafted but players should at least strive towards crafting the first real ship, the Karve, before venturing too far into the depths of the ocean.

Driving the longship in Valheim

By travelling in a boat, players can cover a large amount of ground quickly. The fastest vessel currently in the game is the Longship, which can only be build after the Second forsaken, The Elder has been defeated as it relies on obtaining Iron Nails which can only be crafted from processed iron.

Those were the ways that the player can move faster in Valheim. Not only did we cover how to move faster using the sprint, but how to increase your max speed and even fast travel. If you have any more questions or comments about sprinting or using fast travel in Valheim leave a comment down below.
