Best of Athens in a day

  • Our driver will meet you at your Athens accommodation (or airport) and take you directly to the Acropolis where you will visit the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and you will also get the chance to see the theatre of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. The whole visit usually takes around 1 hour and 45 minutes.
  • Next stops will be the Temple of Zeus (about 15-min visit), the Panathenaic (old Olympic) Stadium (short stop) and the changing of the guards ceremony (about 15 minutes). We continue with a driving tour passing by the Athenian Trilogy (University, Library and Academy of Athens) before we head to the highest point of the city, Lycabettus Hill, to enjoy the stunning view.
  • The next archeological sight you will visit is the Ancient Agora which includes the Stoa of Attalos and the Temple of Hephaestus (approximately 75 minutes).Following the visit to the Agora, you will do a lunch stop for about 1 hour at a place that will be discussed directly with the driver.
  • The last stop of this tour is the Acropolis museum where you will spend about 90 minutes before our driver takes you to your Athens accommodation (or the airport/Piraeus port). For people that are staying nearby the museum or have already visited it, we can substitute it with the National Archeological Museum.

          NOTES :

  • Due to unforeseen circumstances (traffic, weather conditions, etc) this itinerary may be altered in discussion with your driver, to your best interest.
  • Since this is a private tour, the allocated visiting times to the sights can be altered depending on your needs , again after discussion with your driver and as long as the duration of the tour remains the same.

We all very much enjoyed our tour around Athens. Our tour guide was well spoken, pleasant & gave us quite a bit of knowledge about Athens. We highly recommend your company.

My husband Howard and I would like to thank you very much for arranging our tour of Athens last week. We felt that we saw more of Athens in one day than many people are able to see on their own in a week.

“Dear George, Thank you for an unforgettable day of touring yesterday. Marcia and I feel fortunate to have met you. We are grateful for your splendid display of Greek φιλοξενία. With best wishes!”

We just wanted to tell you how much we enjoyed our trip with you last week. You helped to make our 25th anniversary trip to Greece something that we will never forget. Thanks so much for the pastries and peaches you gave us.

Υour service was just what we needed. We were all jet lagged and couldn’t think, so George did our thinking for us. Lots of good stories and Cape Sounion was beautiful.

George, Just wanted to let you know what a GREAT time we had with your son Dennis when we were in Athens 2 weeks ago from our NCL Jade cruise…he was polite, informative, gracious, attentive. We certainly enjoyed our all too brief visit, thanks to his help!

We are hoping to be back in Athens early next year and will defiantly use your company for our travel and touring needs. Thank you again for the first class service.

I wanted to write to tell you how much we enjoyed our tour of Athens with your son Billy. I will forward your information to our travel agent for her information and future clients.

Makis kept the trip enjoyable and was a pleasure to have as our guide. The 4 days we spent with in the Greek countryside were an excellent time in many aspects and will live as a fond memories for us.

10 Things to do in Athens, Georgia

Due to the global pandemic, travel looks different right now depending on where you're going from/to. Please check for travel restrictions and adhere to all local guidelines before planning a trip to any destination you may read about on this site.  Please note: this post may contain affiliate links. If you purchase something by clicking the links, I will get a small compensation, at no extra cost to you.

Sharing is caring!

(home to the University of Georgia bulldawgs!)

Wow. It has been awhile. I’ve been so busy I didn’t even realize how long it had been since I last wrote a blog post (July 23rd – whoops). I’ve been working super hard on my doctoral program at the University of Georgia in Athens. If you aren’t familiar with PhD programs, there’s hurdles that you have to surpass before they even deem you a PhD candidate. Every school has different hurdles but I’ve been working on a big one the last couple months or so and, I passed! Hooray!

Needless to say, it was taking up a lot of my time and energy, so Periodic Adventures fell to the back burner. But, being grounded in Athens meant that I could explore the town a bit better on my weekends, since I wasn’t going to be making any crazy travel plans. Honestly, I really love the city I am in. I grew up in Los Angeles, which was as “big city” as they come. Then I moved to Waltham, Massachusetts, which was too small and dingy for me (sorry Brandeis alums). I transferred to Northern Arizona University in the mountain town of Flagstaff, Arizona, which I LOVED…until I grew out of it (and realized I’m not really a hiker). That all brings me to Athens, Georgia for grad school.

Athens might seem like a small college town (because it is), but we have a lot of heart and local pride…meaning Georgia football. Whether you’re here for one night or find yourself wanting to stay awhile, there are plenty of things to do in Athens. I’ve been here for 2 years already and there’s still so much to do, see, and eat! Here are 10 things to do in Athens, Georgia.

1. Take a stroll through the State Botanical Garden of Georgia

I love botanical gardens so I visited the one in Athens pretty quickly after moving here! There are many different gardens, nature trails, and art pieces to see. And, it’s free!

Pure joy

2. Find the tree that owns itself!

This is honestly the epitome of Athens. It’s so quirky and weird but Athens is kind of the same way. The tree even has a sign stating that it legally needs a specific surrounding perimeter! Just be courteous to the neighbors.

3. Try some craft breweries

Athens is home to some awesome craft breweries. The big three are Terrapin Beer Co., Southern Brewing Company, and Creature Comforts. While the first two are located on the outer parts of Athens, Creature Comforts is in the heart of downtown and I’d argue the Athens favorite. It’s in a repurposed tire shop, so it’s very open. They also have a great outdoor seating area that’s dog-friendly and has cornhole games you can play.

Also new to the scene is Akademia Brewing Company.

4. Play your heart out at the Rook and Pawn

Our very own board game café has hundreds of board games for you to play. You pay a $5 flat fee to play as many games as you’d like for as long as you’d like. They also have delicious food and cocktails – I recommend the monte cristo with local raspberry habanero jam!

5. More into video games? Try Wonderbar downtown

If you’re looking to play old Nintendo 64 or Game Cube games with a bar 5 feet away, Wonderbar is for you. They project games on the walls for you to play such as Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Bros Melee. They also have a couple of arcade games like Ms. Pacman and Asteroids, and foosball, Jenga, and Connect 4! And, if that isn’t enough, they serve themed cocktails and sell nostalgic foods like Lunchables.

Wonderbar Athens

6. Check out the food scene

It might not strike you as so, but Athens has an awesome food scene! Here are some of my favorites and for 60 places to eat in Athens, read this post.

Clocked! – delicious burgers, tater tots, and boozy shakes

Ted’s Most Best – pizza and pasta

Dawg Gone Good BBQ – mom and pop authentic Southern food

Maepole – healthy and ecofriendly combo plates (also the best unsweet iced tea in Athens)

Pouch Pies – savory pies based on different international locations

Mama’s Boy – a town favorite for breakfast and brunch with super yummy biscuit sandwiches

Kelly’s Jamaican Foods – the best jerk chicken and curries

The National – upscale Mediterranean food

hamburger with bacon

7. Tour the University of Georgia and cheer on the dawgs at a football game!

I might be biased, but the University of Georgia is beautiful (and big)! You can easily walk through old North campus, which is across from downtown. Be sure to see the arch, a Georgia icon, and our football stadium, which seats almost 93,000 people!

The people of Athens live and die for their Georgia Dawgs, the University of Georgia’s football team. If you can come to Athens on a gameday, which is a popular fall activity in Georgia , the entire atmosphere of the city changes and it’s electric. You can find tickets for the games at any ticket vendor website. If you can’t get tickets for the game, you can watch at any bar downtown with all the fans! I seriously never watched football growing up and barely know the rules, but it’s still super fun to be a part of it all!

8. Enjoy one of our local events

The two biggest events of the year (that aren’t football) are Twilight Criterium and Athfest!

Twilight is a two-day event in the spring, complete with music, food, and bicycling races. There are different cycling races that operate on a closed circuit with many laps. The fun thing is that some of the races happen at night so the environment is really energetic and fun! If you aren’t racing you can cheer on the cyclists from the sidelines.

Athfest is the annual summer music festival. I went this year during the day and had a great time listening to local musicians and trying new local foods! At night, you can purchase a $20 wristband to go bar-hopping downtown and listen to a ton of other musicians playing at the venues.

9. Relax at one of Athens’ many parks

If you are looking for something more relaxing, I recommend visiting Athens parks. We have a decent number to choose from, including Memorial Park, which is next to the Bear Hollow Zoo and a dog park. The greenery is just beautiful!

park trees fountain

10. Sample some local music

Athens is a huge music town. In fact, R.E.M. and the B-52’s formed here! There are many different venues all with amazing local and touring artists, like Run the Jewels, Modest Mouse, Dawes, Rainbow Kitten Surprise, the Kooks, and more! And who knows? You could be hearing the next big band!

$200 Hotel Credit:  Basic Card Members on U.S. Consumer Platinum Card Account are eligible to receive up to $200 in statement credits per calendar year when they or Additional Platinum Card Members use their Cards to pay for eligible prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® and The Hotel Collection bookings made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card) or when Companion Platinum Card Members on such Platinum Card Accounts pay for eligible prepaid bookings for The Hotel Collection made through American Express Travel (meaning through amextravel.com, the Amex® App, or by calling the phone number on the back of your eligible Card). Purchases by both the Basic Card Member and any Additional Card Members on the Card Account are eligible for statement credits. However, the total amount of statement credits for eligible purchases will not exceed $200 per calendar year, per Card Account. Fine Hotels + Resorts® program bookings may be made only by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic Platinum and Additional Platinum Card Members. The Hotel Collection bookings may be made by eligible U.S. Consumer Basic and Additional Platinum Card Members and Companion Platinum Card Members on the Platinum Card Account. Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Card Members are not eligible for the benefit. To receive the statement credits, an eligible Card Member must make a new booking using their eligible Card through American Express Travel on or after July 1st, 2021, that is prepaid (referred to as "Pay Now" on amextravel.com and the Amex App), for a qualifying stay at an available, participating Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection property. Bookings of The Hotel Collection require a minimum stay of two consecutive nights. Eligible bookings must be processed before December 31st, 11:59PM Central Time, each calendar year to be eligible for statement credits within that year. Eligible bookings do not include interest charges, cancellation fees, property fees or other similar fees, or any charges by a property to you (whether for your booking, your stay or otherwise).

Statement credits are typically received within a few days, however it may take 90 days after an eligible prepaid hotel booking is charged to the Card Account. American Express relies on the merchant to process transactions within the same calendar year that you made the prepaid booking in order to apply the statement credit in the calendar year that it was intended. For example, if you make an eligible prepaid booking on the last day of the year, but the merchant doesn't process that transaction until the next day, then the statement credit available in the next calendar year will be applied to the Card Account, if the purchase is eligible. Statement credits may not be received or may be reversed if the booking is cancelled or modified. To be eligible for this benefit, your Card account must not be cancelled or past due at the time of statement credit fulfillment. If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as eligible, you will not receive the statement credits. For example, your transaction will not be eligible if it is a booking: (i) made with a property not included in the Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection programs, (ii) not made through American Express Travel, or (iii) not made with an eligible Card. Participating properties and their availability are subject to change. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit, American Express will not have an obligation to provide and may reverse any statement credits provided to you. If a charge for an eligible purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Card Account, the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead, the statement credit may be applied to your Pay In Full balance. Please refer to AmericanExpress.com/FHR and AmericanExpress.com/HC for more information about Fine Hotels + Resorts and The Hotel Collection, respectively.

5X Membership Rewards® Points Platinum Card:  Basic Card Members will get 1 Membership Rewards® point for each dollar charged for eligible purchases on their Platinum Card® or an Additional Card on their Account and 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar charged for eligible travel purchases on any Card on the Account (“Additional Points”), minus cancellations and credits. Eligible travel purchases are limited to: (i) purchases of air tickets on scheduled flights, of up to $500,000 in charges per calendar year, booked directly with passenger airlines or through American Express Travel (by calling 1-800-525-3355 or through AmexTravel.com); (ii) purchases of prepaid hotel reservations booked through American Express Travel; and (iii) purchases of prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com. Eligible travel purchases do not include: charter flights, private jet flights, flights that are part of tours, cruises, or travel packages (other than prepaid flight+hotel packages booked through AmexTravel.com), ticketing or similar service fees, ticket cancellation or change fees, property fees or similar fees, hotel group reservations or events, interest charges, or purchases of cash equivalents. Eligible prepaid hotel bookings or prepaid flight+hotel bookings that are modified directly with the hotel will not be eligible for Additional Points.

Bonuses that may be received with your Card on other purchase categories or in connection with promotions or offers from American Express cannot be combined with this benefit. Any portion of a charge that the Basic Card Member elects to cover through redemption of Membership Rewards points is not eligible to receive points. Additional terms and restrictions apply.

Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for Additional Points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn Additional Points if the merchant’s code is not included in an Additional Points category. Basic Card Members may not receive Additional Points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an Additional Points category. For example, you may not receive Additional Points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services, a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers), or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

To be eligible for this benefit, the Card Account must not be cancelled. If American Express, in its sole discretion, determines that you have engaged in or intend to engage in any manner of abuse, misuse, or gaming in connection with this benefit in any way American Express may remove access to this benefit from the Account. For additional information, call the number on the back of your Card or visit americanexpress.com/rewards-info for more information about rewards.

5X Membership Rewards Points for Business Platinum Card:  You will get one point for each dollar charged for an eligible purchase on your Business Platinum Card® from American Express. You will get 4 additional points (for a total of 5 points) for each dollar spent on eligible travel purchases. Eligible travel purchases include scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Additionally, eligible travel purchases include prepaid hotel purchases made through American Express Travel, over the phone with our Travel Consultants or made online at AmexTravel.com, minus returns and other credits. Eligible travel purchases do NOT include non-prepaid hotel bookings, scheduled flights and prepaid flight+hotel packages over the phone, vacation packages, car rentals, cruise, hotel group reservations or events, ticketing service, cancellation or other fees, interest charges, purchases of travelers checks, purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, or purchases of other cash equivalents. To be eligible for the 5x Membership Rewards® points, you must both reserve and charge the travel purchase with the same eligible Business Platinum Card®. If booking is cancelled, the extra points will be deducted from the Membership Rewards account. Merchants are assigned codes based on what they primarily sell. We group certain merchant codes into categories that are eligible for additional points. A purchase with a merchant will not earn additional points if the merchant’s code is not included in an additional points category. You may not receive additional points if we receive inaccurate information or are otherwise unable to identify your purchase as eligible for an additional points category. For example, you may not receive additional points when: a merchant uses a third-party to sell their products or services; or a merchant uses a third-party to process or submit your transaction to us (e.g., using mobile or wireless card readers); or you choose to make a purchase using a third-party payment account or make a purchase using a mobile or digital wallet.

Please visit  americanexpress.com/rewards-info  for more information about rewards.

Pay with Points:  To use Pay with Points, you must charge your eligible purchase through American Express Travel to a Membership Rewards® program-enrolled American Express® Card. Eligible purchases through American Express Travel exclude non-prepaid car rentals and non-prepaid hotels. Points will be debited from your Membership Rewards account, and credit for corresponding dollar amount will be issued to the American Express Card account used. If points redeemed do not cover entire amount, the balance of purchase price will remain on the American Express Card account. Minimum redemption 5,000 points.

See  membershiprewards.com/terms  for the Membership Rewards program terms and conditions.

If a charge for a purchase is included in a Pay Over Time balance on your Linked Account the statement credit associated with that charge may not be applied to that Pay Over Time balance. Instead the statement credit may be applied to your Pay in Full balance. If you believe this has occurred, please contact us by calling the number on the back of your Card. Corporate Card Members are not eligible for Pay Over Time.

Does Medicare Supplement Plan G Cover Foreign Travel?

Eligibility for Original Medicare is an important milestone for seniors, but it may be disappointing to learn that it does not cover everything. Part A helps with inpatient care in a hospital, skilled nursing unit and religious nonmedical health care facility. Part B provides for outpatient care, medical office visits, home health services, durable medical equipment and mental health services. But both Parts A and B have a deductible, coinsurance, copayments and no ceiling on the amount of out-of-pocket expenses that may be incurred.

Some Medicare recipients choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan instead, which provides Parts A and B, and often includes drug coverage and other additional benefits as well. Others prefer to stay on Original Medicare and simply want to supplement it to fill some of the gaps in coverage. The solution is often a Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, which is supplemental insurance for a series of plans labeled with letters A through N.

Asking the Right Questions When researching supplement plans, there are a few key questions that may expedite the selection process:

  • How much is the monthly premium?
  • What is the premium based on; for example, health status, gender, smoking history or marital status?
  • Does everyone pay the same premium regardless of age, or will premium increases be imposed as I age?
  • Will pre-existing conditions impact the timing of my eligibility to join certain plans?

Medicare Supplement Plan G Plan G is known for its robust coverage compared to other supplement policies. It covers all the components available in a Medigap program except the Medicare Part B deductible, and there is no limit on out-of-pocket expenses. The Part B deductible is not worth any consideration at this point because that benefit will become obsolete in 2020. The only supplement plans that currently cover it are Plans C and F, which are being phased out in 2020. Of course, the price tag reflects this suite of provisions.

Plan G is also one of the Medigap plans that include foreign travel. With so many people on the move these days, this benefit is a priority for those who travel for work or leisure. Foreign travel emergency care is covered if it begins during the first 60 days of the excursion. After meeting a deductible, the benefit amounts to 80% of the charges invoiced for specific medically necessary emergency care outside the United States. In 2019, the deductible is $250 and the lifetime limit is $50,000.

Types of transplants

There are two sources for organ donation: living donors and cadaver donors. Living donors are usually a friend or a family member who is able to donate an organ or part of an organ to you. These donors must be tested to see if they are healthy enough to donate an organ and to identify whether the organ would be compatible with your body. If you are waiting for a cadaver donor, you will need to be sure that your transplant center has current phone numbers for you. Your transplant center will need to contact you immediately when an organ becomes available.

An extensive transplant team focused on your health

Your surgeon performs your operation and monitors your progress afterward. Most of your questions about the transplant itself will be answered by your surgeon. Your surgeon will:

  • Make sure your organ is functioning properly,
  • Watch for any signs of rejection or surgical complications, and
  • Help you with the medications you will take following your surgery.

Your medical specialist is a doctor who specializes in the treatment of the organ you are having transplanted (for example: a hepatologist for liver transplant, cardiologist for heart transplant, nephrologist for kidney transplant, etc.) This medical specialist handles all of your non-surgical care including:

  • Organ function
  • Rejection episodes
  • Post-transplant medications

Your clinical support team

Aetna Specialty Pharmacy nurses and pharmacists are available to provide support and educational information to you and your family throughout the entire process. They can work together with your transplant team, your surgeon and medical specialist.

Our nurses and pharmacists will help to:

  • Teach you how to administer injections, if needed
  • Check how well you are staying on track with your medicine
  • Maintain all of your medical information

Your Aetna National Medical Excellence Program ® nurse case manager is a registered nurse who specializes in case management of transplant recipients. He or she will work together with you and your transplant center to meet your health care needs within the guidelines of your health care benefits.

Your physical therapist will work with you to develop an exercise plan that will strengthen your muscles and help you to resume normal activities as quickly as possible after your transplant.

Transplants can be stressful. A psychologist or psychiatrist can offer you emotional and clinical support before, during and after your transplant.

Your nutritionist will work with you to establish a plan for healthy eating. This will help to enhance your quality of life before the transplant. This will also support your recovery following the transplant.

Your financial coordinator helps you to explore all of the options available to help pay for your transplant. He or she will work with you to identify primary and secondary benefits, Medicare and Medicaid, or alternate resources available.

Your social worker can help you understand family and lifestyle issues that you may encounter as a transplant recipient. Your social worker can also point you in the direction of community resources that may be beneficial to you and your family.

Your pharmacist will help your transplant team oversee the many complex medications you will take after your transplant and for the rest of your life. Your pharmacist will help to ensure that the new organ has the best chance for survival.

Get help managing your therapy

Aetna Specialty Pharmacy is here for you. You will receive many helpful services, such as:

Assessment As a new transplant patient referred to Aetna Specialty Pharmacy, you will be assessed to determine your medication needs. We will confirm some key information - like your age, weight, therapy, dose, any allergies, and shipping address. Tell us if you need help understanding your medication or how to use it.

You will also be assigned your Aetna National Medical Excellence Program nurse case manager. Your nurse case manager will keep in touch with you for at least six months to check how you are doing.

Clinical help You can also talk to a nurse or pharmacist anytime. They can be reached toll free, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Education You will receive a welcome packet along with your first order filled by Aetna Specialty Pharmacy. It will explain our services and what to expect. If you have any questions, just call. If you need help with taking a self-injectable medication, a nurse or pharmacist is available to walk you through the process.

Medicare Aetna Specialty Pharmacy is a Medicare provider. We maintain a Medicare team that determines if your medication meets Federal guidelines for coverage. If so, this team will appropriately coordinate your benefits coverage.

Transplant care plan We make sure you always have the right medication and dose for your needs. If you want additional support, a nurse or pharmacist will contact you as often as you'd like

Extra service at refill time A refill coordinator will call you one week before your refill is due. He or she will schedule your delivery and check to see how you are doing. Your refill coordinator will ask you to confirm

  • How you are doing with your therapy.
  • If you are still taking the same specialty drug.
  • If you are still taking the same dose.
  • If you are having any side effects or signs of rejection.
  • If you need additional supplies.
  • Where you would like your next refill delivered.

If you express that you are having any trouble with your therapy, we will direct you to a nurse or pharmacist who may give you advice to help you cope.

Open lines of communication A nurse or pharmacist will call you as often as you need. And we'll stay in touch with your doctor too. If you want, we'll reach out to your doctor on your behalf to express your concerns for you. We can direct you to receive extra emotional support, if needed.

Product integrity We take care of your medications. Our pharmacists will double check your order to make sure its right before it goes out the door. Our special packaging keeps your medications at the right temperature.

Dependable delivery We can send your medications by UPS® or FedEx® -- anywhere you want. That includes your home, doctor's office, transplant center, or any other location. We track every package to make sure you get your order safely and on time.

Improvement plans We look for ways to make our services -- and your experience -- a better one. We might send you surveys so you can tell us how we're doing or how we can improve.

Staying healthy before your transplant

Stay as active as you can Keep your muscles as toned as possible right up until your transplant.

Eat well Work with the nutritionist on your transplant team. Identify the best foods to keep you healthy before your transplant and those foods you should avoid.

Quit smoking Contact your transplant team for the help you need to cut down and quit before your transplant.

Lose weight if you need to, before your surgery This will decrease the chances for complications during and after your transplant.

Communicate with your transplant team If you experience depression, a common problem for people awaiting transplant, talk to your team. They will be able to give you helpful advice for dealing with stress including support groups and anti-depressant medications, if appropriate.

Stay connected with your family and friends They will be your support as you go through each step of your transplant journey. They will provide you with the help and strength you need to get back your quality of life after the surgery.

The day of your transplant

The day of your surgery, you will probably feel a little nervous and even a little excited about the procedure. Despite the many questions you may have asked your transplant team, you may still find yourself wondering what that day will be like. Your surgery experience will be unique to you. However, we have included below some of the common things that many transplant recipients have experienced on the day of their transplant.

Timing of your transplant If you are to receive your transplant from a living donor, your surgery will be scheduled in advance, on a day and time that is most convenient to you, your donor, your doctors, and the transplant center. However, if you are awaiting a cadaver donor, you could be contacted at any time, day or night, to head to the hospital for your transplant.

What you can expect at the hospital Regardless of whether your transplant is from a living donor or a cadaver donor, you will find yourself in a flurry of activity upon arriving at the hospital.

  • The transplant team will take some blood just to double-check compatibility with the donor. They will review your medical history with you one more time. They will also perform a pre-surgical physical exam.
  • You will receive tests that may include an EKG, X-rays, and a urine test. Your doctor will also do a cross-matching test that mixes your blood with some of the donor's blood to see how your body will most likely react to the new organ.
  • Before surgery, you will be put to sleep with general anesthesia for the duration of the procedure. Some transplants take 3-4 hours, while others can take up to 8-12 hours or more to complete. Length of surgery will depends on the type of transplant being performed as well as the individual complexities of your case. Ask your doctor how long it may take for you.

After your transplant

When you wake up from your surgery, you will probably feel a little tired, groggy and a bit sore. The actual recovery time will vary based on the type of transplant you received, as well as any complications you may experience during your recovery.

Typically, you can expect to feel the effects of your new organ right away, although certain transplanted organs take longer to gain strength in their new body. To help avoid possible rejection, it is very important to monitor your health during the critical time immediately following the transplant. A transplant is considered major surgery, so you can expect to remain in the hospital for at least one or two weeks following your transplant.

Not taking medications as prescribed is the number one reason for transplant rejections Your body will recognize your new organ as something that doesn't belong there. If you do not take your anti-rejection medications, your body will build up antibodies in your immune system to fight your new organ. By taking your medication, you will suppress your immune system so that it cannot attack your new organ.

Many of these medications will need to be taken for the rest of your life. This will help to keep you and your new organ healthy.

Your transplant team will clearly explain each of the medications you will need to take, how to take them and why they are important to your health. If you have any questions, ask your transplant team. They will be happy to discuss side effects and possible treatments to help you stay on your medication and keep your new organ healthy.

Vital to your success: monitoring your health Your transplant team will continuously monitor your health. But you are the best person to judge how well you feel after your transplant. Following the transplant, you will need to check your vital signs and monitor any signs and symptoms you may experience along the way.

Problems are easier to treat when caught early. It is important that you report any abnormalities to your transplant team right away.

  • Blood pressure -- Your transplant team will tell you the normal range for your blood pressure. Report unusual changes in your blood pressure, whether high or low, to your transplant team.
  • Pulse -- Your pulse measures how many beats your heart makes in one minute. A normal pulse may range between 60-100 beats per minute. Report any major changes in your pulse or if it should go over or below the normal range.
  • Temperature -- Take your temperature everyday and immediately if you have chills. Having a fever means you may have an infection and may be in the early stages of rejection. Contact your transplant team if you have a fever of 100.5°F or higher.
  • Weight -- You should weigh yourself in the mornings after you use the bathroom but before you eat breakfast. This will help you to notice any sudden weight gain or loss on a daily basis. Weight gain could mean fluid retention, whereas weight loss could be the result of dehydration. Either scenario should be reported immediately to your transplant team so that they can evaluate the cause of your weight change and treat it if necessary.

Signs and symptoms that something may be wrong

Your body has several ways of letting you know that something may be wrong. Typically, symptoms are those things only you can notice about yourself. Signs are those things that others can recognize about you.

Here are some common symptoms that you may notice. Immediately notify your transplant team if you experience any of the following:

  • Hot flashes
  • Nervousness
  • Cold symptoms

Here are some common signs that you, your family or friends may notice. Immediately notify your transplant team if you become aware of the following:

  • Jittery hands
  • Cuts that are oozing
  • White patches in your mouth or throat, etc.
  • Staying healthy after your transplant

1. Always take your anti-rejection medications as directed.

2. Have your lab work done as often as your transplant team tells you.

3. Watch yourself for changes in your health, no matter how small, and report them immediately to your transplant team.

4. Ask questions. Your transplant team is there to help you and will do anything in their power to help your transplant be successful.

George ecabert.

george travel atena

George’s love of travel began at a young age when his family took traditional summer vacations, driving across America towing an RV.  They visited some great locations like Nashville, Bowling Green, Myrtle Beach, Cape Cod, and even visited our neighbors to the North, Canada!  For his 25th wedding anniversary, George and his wife took their first cruise sailing on the newly built Carnival Breeze, and that’s when the travel bug really started!  George had just as much fun planning the trip as he did on the trip, and met a travel agent onboard who advised him on how to get started.

“For his 25th wedding anniversary, George and his wife took their first cruise sailing on the newly built Carnival Breeze, and that’s when the travel bug really started!  “

As a travel agent, George has taken Caribbean and Canadian cruises, and will experience his first Alaskan cruise in June.  He’s also become a big fan of all-inclusive resorts which have become his niche for booking travel. He’s a lifelong Disney fan, and visits the parks as often as possible. He made his first visit to Disneyland last year as part of an Adventures by Disney Backstage Magic tour.

George has completed the Royal Caribbean University of WoW training, is a graduate of the College of Disney Knowledge and is an AM Resorts Master Agent. George is married to his wonderful wife Elaine, and has two grown Daughters, Danielle and Samantha.
