Ready to start your adventure?

6 reasons to visit greenland on a small ship cruise.

If you're looking for a unique and unforgettable adventure, consider taking a small ship cruise to Greenland. Here are six reasons why:

Natural Landscapes

You'll witness some of the most breathtaking natural landscapes on Earth, including majestic fjords, towering icebergs, rugged mountains, and vast glaciers.

Northern Lights

In locations with 0% light pollution, when the conditions are right this is one of the best places in the world to witness the magic of the Northern Lights.

Experience cultural immersion by interacting with local communities and seeing their way of life. Greenland has a rich indigenous culture that you won't want to miss.

Search for Arctic wildlife such as polar bears, whales, seals, reindeer, and bird species. While they may be harder to spot than in Svalbard, they're still a sight to behold.

Small Ships

An Expedition Micro Cruise offers an intimate way to experience Greenland's nature and local cultures without the crowds or strict schedules that come with large cruise ships.

Easy to Reach

Our East Greenland trips depart from Iceland, which makes our Greenland cruises easy to reach from the USA and Europe.

Where Will You Visit on a Greenland Cruise?

Scoresby sund.

Scoresby Sund is the largest fjord system in the world! Here you can navigate through a mesmerizing labyrinth of towering icebergs and venture into the smaller tributaries of this vast fjord system, including Røde Fjord and Hare Fjord. If fortune favors, you may even have the opportunity to visit the striking Røde Ø, or also known as Red Island, where the remarkable red sandstone formations bear an uncanny resemblance to the surface of Mars itself.

Volquart Boons Coast

Embark on an awe-inspiring adventure along Greenland's Volquart Boons Coast, a mesmerizing landscape adorned with a succession of breathtaking glaciers stretching for miles. As you navigate westward, prepare to marvel at the imposing basalt columns of Viking Bay, where you can embark on an exhilarating zodiac cruise at the base of these towering cliffs. In the vicinity lies Danmark Ø, an island that offers a fascinating glimpse into the ancient Inuit settlements, with remarkably well-preserved archaeological sites showcasing their winter and summer dwellings.

Ittoqqortoormiit

Ittoqqortoormiit is one of Greenland's most isolated settlements offering a rare opportunity to experience a side of Greenland that few have the privilege to witness first hand. This small community, home to just 400 residents, is cut off from the outside world for much of the year due to encroaching sea ice, making it a truly unique and extraordinary destination. It’s a community filled with culture and traditions, giving you the chance to experience a way of life that is entirely different from the Western world. The isolation of Ittoqqortoormiit has preserved its authenticity, providing visitors with an unparalleled glimpse into the resilience and vibrancy of Greenlandic life in one of the most remote corners of the globe.

Highlights of a Greenland Cruise

Sense of exploration.

Cruising in Greenland gives you the feeling of venturing into a remote and untouched world. The isolation and pristine nature of the environment create a sense of adventure and exploration. Expect to do lots of shore landings by Zodiac in seldom-visited places with some of the most gorgeous views on the planet.

Greenland is one of the prime destinations for witnessing the mesmerizing natural phenomenon known as the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. On our Scoresby Sund cruises, the Northern Lights are seen from September onwards and offer one of the most majestic backdrops to witness this phenomenon.

Local Ways Of Life

Greenland is home to a rich tapestry of local cultures, primarily influenced by the indigenous Inuit population. These cultures have evolved over centuries in response to the challenges and opportunities presented by the Arctic environment.

Icebergs Galore

Greenland is famous for its impressive icebergs, which are large chunks of ice (some up to 500 meters tall) that have broken off from glaciers on the edges of the Greenland Ice Cap and float in the surrounding waters. These icebergs result from the continuous movement and calving of glaciers into the ocean.

Wildlife You Can See on a Greenland Cruise

Whilst the opportunities to encounter wildlife are higher in Svalbard, Greenland is home to stunning, if not infrequent, wildlife.

On our Greenland cruises we frequently encounter:

Polar Bears

While polar bears are more commonly associated with the Arctic regions of Canada and Svalbard, there is a chance of spotting these magnificent creatures in East Greenland. Polar bears are expert swimmers and can often be seen on ice floes or hunting near the coast.

Musk oxen can be found in the tundra deep inside Scoresby Sund. These large, shaggy animals are known for their distinctive appearance and are a symbol of the Arctic wilderness.

These unique and elusive creatures are often called the "unicorns of the sea" due to the long, spiral tusks that can extend up to several meters from the upper jaw of males. Narwhals primarily inhabit Arctic waters, including those around Greenland. They are known for their distinctive vocalisations and for forming social pods.

Several species of seals can be found in Greenland's waters, including harp seals, ringed seals, and bearded seals. They often haul out on icebergs, ice floes, or rocky shores.

Arctic Birds

The Arctic skies are home to a variety of bird species, including puffins, guillemots, kittiwakes, and various species of gulls. These birds often nest on cliffs and rocky ledges along the coast.

Plan Your Cruise to Greenland

How to get to greenland.

Greenland offers travellers the chance to experience one of the last great wildernesses on Earth. Whilst Greenland is a remote island (the largest on Earth) getting there is relatively straightforward and today Greenland has multiple travel connections.

A Guide to Choosing The Perfect Expedition Micro Cruise For You

We are frequently asked about the differences between our voyages. This article provides tips on how to choose the perfect Expedition for you.

Greenland Cruises FAQ

When is the best time of year to take a cruise to greenland.

The cruising season in Greenland starts in June and finishes in late September. Earlier in the season the east coast of Greenland is blocked by ice and our trips visiting this area operate during August and September when sea ice is at its lowest level.

If you would like to visit Scoresby Sund on the east coast we offer a unique expedition during late August called Scoresby Sund & East Greenland Explorer.

On the west coast of Greenland the weather in Disko Bay is usually very stable during the summer months between June and August. If you would like to experience 24- hours of sunlight with some amazing photography oppurtunities please see our Disko Bay Photo Cruise page.

Where do your cruises to Greenland depart from?

All our expedition cruises in Greenland depart from different ports depending on the cruise.

Our Scoresby Sund and East Greenland cruise departs from Akureyri in Iceland which offers great international connections and saves travellers the expense of a flight to Greenland.

Our Disko Bay Photo tour departs from Ilulissat in north-west Greenland which is served by direct flights to Iceland or other destinations in Greenland.

What is an Expedition Micro Cruise?

Expedition micro cruise is a term we use to describe an expedition cruise with no more than 12 guests in total. Our cruises take place on custom built expedition vessels built for safe travel in the polar regions. All our vessels offer good comfort levels, private cabins and great food with the huge added bonus that you will be experiencing Greenland with just a handful of guests.

The focus on our trips is exploring and we will aim to make daily landings by Zodiac landing craft to explore the shore. You will be accompanied by a knowledgeable expert guide who will tell you about the areas you visit. When you have been apart of a small group experience we guarantee you will never want to go back to cruising on larger vessels.

Why is an Expedition Micro Cruise or Small Ship Cruise the best way to explore Greenland?

Unlike larger vessels with higher passenger capacities, our voyages are personal and unique in their approach. Travelling with a small group of guests means more time and flexibility exploring and less time waiting to go ashore.

Our small expedition vessels will get you closer to nature and landscapes that you came than larger ships can due to their smaller size, offering you a great deal more intimacy.

Our Expedition Micro Cruises and Small Ship Adventures give you the opportunity to experience the polar regions first hand on a real adventure without the crowds of people on larger ships. Our goal is to make you part of the adventure.

How does a small ship experience in Greenland compare to other cruises?

Non-expedition cruises on regular cruise ships don’t offer shore landings and often only visit a couple of Greenlandic towns which means they miss out on lots of the adventure. The average size of a cruise ship doing non-expedition cruises takes 2000 passengers.

A number of companies offer expedition cruises in Greenland with landings on larger vessels. The average number of passengers these ships take is over 200. In our opinion that is too many people to be landing at sensitive places in the Arctic.

Many companies advertise small ship cruises to Greenland but their definition of a ‘small ship’ varies and can range from anything from 250 guests down to 12 guests. The experience between travelling with 250 guests and 48 or 12 guests is huge. Our Expedition Micro Cruises and Small Ship Cruises to Greenland are the way they should be, intimate and low impact.

We know that an expedition as incredible and unique as this requires careful planning and consideration. If you have any questions, give us a call! As a small team, we ensure you always receive a personal response. You'll have your own expedition specialist dedicated to helping you with a simple and easy booking process.

Getting to Your Greenland Cruise

Due to Greenland’s isolated nature, very little infrastructure links towns and settlements, making an expedition cruise with shore landings by Zodiac the perfect way to encounter all Greenland offers.

With Greenland, there are two main options for joining cruises: 1) to fly to Greenland and join a cruise that departs from there, or 2) join an expedition cruise that sails to Greenland from other destinations in the Arctic, such as Svalbard, Greenland or Iceland. The choice is down to which itinerary best suits your preferences.

For cruises commencing in Greenland, a charter flight to Greenland is often included as part of the itinerary from Iceland or Copenhagen, Denmark, to ensure a seamless journey.

If cruising to Greenland from another destination, you must reach the departure port first. Many cruises to Greenland depart from Reykjavik, Iceland, which has excellent international connections to the rest of the world.

Depending on your itinerary, a flight to and from the departure port may also be included. If not, our Travel Experience Team can help you with this.

For more information, please see our guide below for all the different ways to get to Greenland.

Best Time To Go On A Greenland Cruise

Greenland cruises usually take place in the summer between June and September when the temperature is milder, and there is less sea ice, making navigation easier. However, thanks to new icebreaker cruises, it’s now possible to visit East Greenland much earlier in the season, during April and May, due to its unique icebreaking capabilities.

The best time to explore Greenland on an expedition cruise depends on what you want to see. April to June offer the best chance to undertake a genuine polar expedition deep into the sea ice of East Greenland on an icebreaker cruise.

June and July offer great months to explore the tranquil fjords of the West Coast of Greenland and the stunning ice formations of Disko Bay, with 24 hours of sunlight above the Arctic Circle and often mild weather.

August is the best month for expeditions to East Greenland on regular cruise ships and for exploring further afield, from Greenland to the Northwest Passage, as the sea ice extent is at its lowest.

September offers the best chances to see the Northern lights on your cruise as the darkness returns, and it is an excellent month for photographers with gorgeous hues in the sky.

Frequently Asked Questions

When booking a cruise to Greenland, the cost can vary depending on factors such as the size and luxury level of the ship, the specific travel plans, the number of people going, the time of year, and the length of the trip. As a rough estimate, prices usually start at around £1,000 ($1274, €1152) per person per night for an expedition cruise. Icebreaker cruises to Greenland, which are more specialized, tend to be more expensive per person. Often, it is possible to obtain a deal for late bookers looking to travel at the last minute, subject to availability.

If you’re traveling solo to Greenland, we have special deals that don’t require you to pay extra for a single room on certain cruises. Our team can help you find the right cruise for you, so just let us know what you’re looking for!

Seeing polar bears on a cruise in East Greenland is a possibility, but the chances are lower than in Svalbard. It’s important to understand that the presence of sea ice is crucial for polar bear sightings. Therefore, it’s highly unlikely to spot them in Southern Greenland or the Disko Bay area, as these regions are ice-free during the summer.

For the best chances of encountering polar bears, we strongly recommend a Greenland cruise that also includes a visit to Svalbard. This combination offers the most comprehensive experience for polar bear sightings.

Greenland experiences various weather conditions depending on the time of year you plan to visit due to its Arctic climate. The summer months (June to August) offer the best cruising conditions, with daytime temperatures ranging from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius (32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit) above the Arctic Circle. The area to the south experiences milder temperatures, especially in July. The Arctic experiences calm conditions during summer due to predominantly high-pressure weather systems, with longer daylight hours and even the midnight sun above the Arctic Circle. Spring (April to May) temperatures are colder, ranging from -10 to 5 degrees Celsius (14 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit). Fall (September to October) experiences lower temperatures and the return of snowfall, offering the best chance to see the Northern Lights.

Given the unpredictable nature of Greenland’s weather, it’s crucial to be well-prepared. We recommend packing layers, warm clothing, waterproof gear, and sturdy footwear. Rest assured, we will provide you with a comprehensive packing list during the reservation process, ensuring you’re fully equipped to handle the weather conditions on your Greenland cruise.

The Greenland cruise package encompasses comfortable cabin accommodations, meals, knowledgeable guides, outlined guest lecturers per the itinerary, Zodiac cruises and excursions, and specific charter flights. Please refer to the detailed tour page for a comprehensive list of inclusions.

At North Pole Cruises, we understand that financial security is a top priority for our clients. That’s why all our bookings come with 100% financial protection. We also provide supplier failure insurance at no extra cost, giving you peace of mind and the best protection for your booking.

When reserving your chosen itinerary, the payment options will be quoted .

Our typical payment terms are designed with your comfort in mind. You can secure your cabin with a 25% deposit at the time of booking, and the final balance is due 90 days before your departure, giving you ample time to plan and prepare.

We accept payment via credit card (Mastercard or Visa) or bank transfer.

When you cruise to Greenland, you can choose from various adventurous activities. Exploring with an expert team of guides on Zodiacs is always included as part of the expedition.

You can also try kayaking, dog sledging, walking on ice, camping, flight-seeing helicopters and ice fishing. These activities are available on specific trips and can add a special touch to your Greenland adventure.

When you book your trip, let us know which activities you’re interested in, and we’ll help you find the right trip for you. The cost of some activities is already included in the trip, while others might have an extra fee.

Due to its vast size, wildlife in Greenland is less commonly seen compared to Svalbard, where wildlife is more concentrated. If you are interested in seeing polar bears, cruises to East Greenland provide the best chances, although sightings cannot be guaranteed. Additionally, Disko Bay is an excellent location for whale-watching.

We suggest considering a cruise that covers both Svalbard and Greenland for a greater chance to see wildlife. This combination will enhance your opportunities for wildlife sightings.

If you need help choosing the most suitable Greenland cruise based on your interests, please contact our Travel Experience Team.

Greenland cruises can range from 10 days for an icebreaker cruise exploring East Greenland in the spring to 28 days for a comprehensive cruise covering Greenland and the Northwest Passage. We offer a variety of Greenland cruises and can assist you in finding the one that best suits your preferred duration.

Planning to go on a cruise to Greenland? It’s best to book your trip a year ahead to make sure you get the ship and room you want. But if you’re more of a last-minute planner, don’t worry – we often have spots available on some trips. Just reach out to our Travel Experience Team to find out.

You'll find about 8% of the entire world's ice in Greenland, but surprisingly, not all of the country resembles the large ice cube you might be expecting. Qaqortoq is actually rather green by Greenland standards, and you'll find it situated at the southern tip of the island, not too far from Canada. While there, you'll enjoy a port that has buildings and landmarks dating back to the town's founding in the 18th century, though today it's best characterized by its hot springs, wildlife and Inuit culture. Note: Itineraries to this port are subject to favorable weather and ice conditions.

  • Explore on your own and immerse yourself in the Inuit way of life.

The newest addition to our fleet will honor the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896). Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.

MS Spitsbergen

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'. After a complete reconstruction, MS Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2016. The ship features high technical standards as well as comfortable, modern public areas and cabins. She is modern and environmentally progressive and will undergo further improvements that will reduce emissions and fuel consumption even more. The new ship’s maneuverability and optimal size make her quite suitable for exploring polar waters.

Helping local communities

On a Hurtigruten Expeditions cruise to Greenland you’ll be helping to improve the lives of Greenlandic children. The Hurtigruten Foundation supports the work of local charities and development projects wherever we travel.

Greenland Small Ship Cruises

greenland cruises from usa

A Greenland small ship cruise is the best way to explore the world’s largest yet least densely populated island. And we’ve compiled the top Greenland cruises aboard expedition ships under 300 guests. Let our expertise be your guide to discovering this incredible land and finding an expedition cruise in Greenland that matches both your adventurous spirit and travel needs.

Why Cruise to Greenland?

Remote and still largely off the map of mainstream tourism, Greenland offers pristine wilderness, authentic culture and thrilling activities, making it an unforgettable adventure destination. Brightly colored coastal towns, skyscraper icebergs, massive glaciers, extensive fjords, vast tundra and fluffy sled dogs draw photographers and intrepid travelers from all over the world.

As the saying goes, “When you’ve seen the world, there is always Greenland.” Due to Greenland’s inhospitable Arctic terrain, lack of developed road network and the fact that it’s 80% covered by the world’s second-largest ice sheet, it’s not the easiest country to explore. That’s where the benefits of a cruise to Greenland comes in.

Greenland small ship cruises make the most of scattered settlements and remote fjords by sailing you efficiently along the coastline. In fact, of Greenland’s 60,000 inhabitants, 90% are of Indigenous descent, living in settlements up and down the coasts. Greenland is the least densely populated country on the planet, in fact, and is an independent Danish territory with its own parliament.

Depending on where you visit, you may have opportunities for hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, dog sledding, rock climbing and even helicopter assisted adventures. Plus other activities like Zodiac cruising through icefields, watching for arctic wildlife and the aurora borealis, visiting fascinating historic sites and authentic Greenlandic villages.

Greenland Expedition Cruise Ships

Greenland expedition cruise ships are purpose built to explore polar regions in safety and comfort. They feature ice-strengthened hulls, sophisticated navigational equipment, small craft and sometimes even helicopters to transport guests ashore in remote locations exploring away from the ship.

Being on a Greenland expedition cruise does not mean you have to sacrifice comfort. Greenland luxury ships offer large suites, some with balconies, gourmet cuisine and five-star service to satisfy the most sophisticated tastes. View the full fleet of Arctic ships offering Greenland small ship cruises.

Greenland Cruise Itineraries & Regions

Cruises to Greenland visit three distinct regions: East Greenland, South Greenland and West Greenland. Some itineraries may highlight two or three regions, while others concentrate on a deeper exploration of one. Regions of Greenland may be part of an extended route that also include nearby Arctic islands like Svalbard and Iceland to the east, or a greater Canada and Northwest Passage itinerary to the west.

Which area will interest you the most? We take a deeper dive below to help you decide.

East Greenland

Above the Arctic circle, East Greenland is the least visited and most remote part of the island. It offers natural beauty and a surprising collection of flora and fauna. East Greenland is also one of the least populated areas in Greenland. Some communities who live in this isolated territory speak a different language and still follow an ancestral way of life living off the land.

For nine months out of the year, East Greenland is covered with snow and pack ice, so during the short summer season an ice-strengthened vessel is needed to operate here and daily cruise stops are often still guided by weather and ice conditions.

In East Greenland you will likely visit two main areas on a Greenland small ship cruise: Scoresby Sund and Northeast Greenland National Park.

Scoresby Sund is the world’s largest and deepest fjord system. Its tree-like structure branches off into a labyrinth of fjords with massive icebergs, towering basalt walls, calving glaciers and surprisingly colorful tundra. Near the mouth of Scoresby Sund is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote settlements on Earth. For most of the year, its 300 inhabitants are cut off from the rest of the country and survive by hunting and fishing. Scoresby Sund is one of the best places in the Arctic to see the northern lights as well as local wildlife.

Farther north is the world’s largest national park, the Northeast Greenland National Park . With no permanent human population, it is one of the best places to spot Greenland’s wildlife and is also an important breeding ground for polar bear and walrus. Access to the park is strictly controlled, so cruise operators must apply for separate permits to sail here.

Cruises to East Greenland typically start with an embarkation from Iceland or Svalbard . Some  Arctic cruises  may visit all three Arctic islands as part of a larger itinerary and range from 10-18 days or more. You can even visit East Greenland from the route of a  North Pole expedition .

South Greenland

South Greenland is a maze of scenic fjords, sounds, islets and inlets. Sailing through Prins Christian Sund and Skjoldungen Sund surrounded by high iconic peaks and turquoise lakes, you’ll see why the heart of this region is known as “Arctic Patagonia.” But it’s not all icy fjords and mountain peaks. South Greenland has a uniquely warm microclimate, and its surprisingly lush and fertile coast is filled with green pastures and sheep farms. The “Garden of Greenland” is perfect for adventure experiences like hiking, kayaking, mountain bike riding, rock climbing and more. From the ruins of Brattahlíð, the estate of Viking Erik the Red, to the modern landscape of Kujataa, the UNESCO World Heritage region of southern Greenland, see historic sites with the largest and best-preserved Norse ruins, green-roofed turf houses, and a 14 th century chapel built and named for Erik the Red’s wife, Tjoldhilde.

Unless it’s part of a larger itinerary, cruises to South Greenland typically start from Narsarsuaq, south Greenland, with charter flights connecting to Reykjavik, Iceland.

In South Greenland tall jagged granite peaks and turquoise water are set against blue sky

West Greenland

Home to Nuuk, the nation’s charming capital, West Greenland is the island’s most developed and visited region. Colorful Inuit communities like Ilulissat, Rode Bay, Ilimanaq and Uummannaq are perched at the edge of the Greenland ice cap and carry on their timeless way of life.

A highlight of the west is cruising through Disko Bay and stopping at several fascinating landing sites. The settlement town of Ilulissat is known for having more sled dogs than people. The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to Jakobshavn Glacier, one of the world’s most active glaciers, dubbed “the birthplace of icebergs.”

The Baffin Sea is the body of water that lies between West Greenland and the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. It serves as the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage, the legendary sea route that links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Access to and from West Greenland is via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. There are Greenland small ship cruises that focus on West Greenland only; explore both West Greenland and Arctic Canada; or use Kangerlussuaq as an embarkation point for Northwest Passage journeys.

Northwest Passage Cruises

Become part of an elite club of cruisers. Greenland cruise itineraries that include the Northwest Passage explore the icy frontier above 80° north on the same route that has attracted legendary explorers for centuries.

Some operators attempt to sail the full length of the Northwest Passage. These journeys range 22-30 days long and start from Kangerlussuaq in west Greenland, cruising long Baffin Island, through the Bellot Strait, along mainland Canada’s northern shoreline and around Alaska’s Far North shoreline, ending in Nome, Alaska.

Abbreviated routes may just explore the eastern portion of the Northwest Passage, starting in West Greenland and ending in the Canadian Arctic archipelago. These itineraries are generally around 17 days.

Coastal Comparison & A Note about Wildlife

The southern, eastern and western coasts of Greenland all have their own unique experiences and features dictated by climate, wildlife, human population and geology.

The west is characterized by beautiful mountainous landscapes and abundant, brightly colored settlements. The south holds fascinating Norse history, and due to a lower human population in the east, there are slightly greater possibilities of seeing more wildlife.

Most travelers come to Greenland to experience the Inuit culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of mountains, glaciers and enormous icebergs. All are possible in any of the three regions. If wildlife is your number one priority, consider adding East Greenland and Svalbard to your itinerary if a combination of landscapes and wildlife is what you’re looking for.

Best Time for Cruises to Greenland

Most Greenland cruises operate between June and October, when most of the country’s coasts are snow-free and vegetation is thawed out. The midnight sun can be experienced in the summer between mid-April to the end of August. From the end of August through October, the aurora borealis can be viewed. In fact, our AdventureSmith experts witnessed the northern lights enroute to East Greenland during an August North Pole expedition that stopped in Scoresby Sund (pictured below). See all focused northern lights cruises to learn more.

When visiting Greenland, remember that it’s the biggest island in the world, so there are climate variations throughout the seasons, from coast to coast, and even from fjord to fjord.

Guests stand on deck of ship staring up at the green strip of lights across the dark night sky, it the aurora borealis in Greenland.

Hear It From Greenland Cruise Travelers

I’m 72 and I was looking for an adventure which was different from the usual European trip of visiting endless museums, palaces, churches, etc. I don’t enjoy crowded venues, mobbed by other tourists. Greenland was not a place that every other traveler visits. This expedition gave me the opportunity to hike in places where no one had stepped foot before, in breathtaking surroundings and yet I didn’t have make any arrangements for sleeping accommodations, dining, tours, etc. AdventureSmith and Quark did it all for me, all I had to do is board the ship!

I loved this trip exploring South Greenland. We experienced so much in our time aboard and we had great weather during our trip. The scenery was stunning and varied. We spent a lot of time off the ship exploring by zodiac, on foot, paddling, and by helicopter(2x). Exploring by helicopter and making 2 landings in Greenland was an unforgettable experience.

Fascinating trip to a rarely visited part of the world on an exceptional vessel.

We had an absolutely perfect trip!! First class from beginning to end. Loved the helicopter rides and the views we were able to experience from high above Greenland. The ship was fabulous. The room was great. Spacious, considering we were on a ship. It had a large window so we could take in all of the spectacular views. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. We would definitely travel with Quark again.

Accommodations Review

We had an Explorer Triple which was roomy enough for three. It had lots of storage. The shower was OUTSTANDING!

Meals Review

A wonderful variety, prepared extremely well and they were able to address specific requests.

Itinerary Review

I enjoyed the ability to visit hiking sites via the helicopters. I felt like our group was possibly the first people to walk on these locations. The paddle excursion around and among icebergs was a thrill and of course, the various sites for hiking via the zodiacs was always enjoyable. Everywhere seemed to be pristine.

Transportation Review

Clear instructions regarding our Quark connections.

Fellow Passengers Review

I loved meeting my fellow passengers from around the world. Everyone was friendly and fun to be around.

Crew & Guides Review

The Expedition Leader explained considerations for the following day’s activities and she always seemed to find a work around if the weather (clouds, ice, etc) didn’t permit the “planned” days activities. She was personable, humorous and very professional. I was wowed by her ability to get things done.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Arielle forwarded us information in a timely manner and was available to answer our questions if they weren’t addressed in the Quark information package.

Ultramarine is the culmination of decades of expedition experience built into the perfect expedition platform. The Balcony Suite I was in was comfortable, quiet, and was in a good location to access all parts of the ship. I enjoyed the Common areas of the ship a lot, the Panorama Lounge + Espresso Station, the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch, the ambassador theater for presentations and briefings and the massive outdoor areas for taking in the views.

I enjoyed Heli Hiking in Prince Christian Sound. We were able to get amazing 360 degree views with multiple fjords, rocky peaks, alpine lakes, and hanging glaciers. The fjords in this area are framed by glacier carved granite domes and spires with some still having glaciers around the tops and in the valleys. Landing on the ice sheet looked like you were landing on the moon with Ice as all you can see in all directions. They had expedition teams members on the ice who gave you a brief intro to the environment and a couple directions about where you could and couldn't go. The landing site they had chosen had solid ice underfoot and small creeks and pools around the immediate area where you could see the most beautiful blue colors of the ice coming through the crystal clear water above. Being on the ice sheet even for a short time was a breathtaking highlight from the trip. The Heli flight back I had a window seat and was able to take some amazing aerial shots of the ice sheet and tidewater glaciers from above on the way back to the ship.

The food aboard was excellent and the service was excellent also. I liked the option to eat at the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch. It has a great view and is smaller and less busy than the Balena restaurant which is the main one. I think more variety could be offered at the buffets.

This trip has a variety of ability levels and ages. The expedition team did a great job of provided activities for everyone. There were some passengers I enjoyed socializing with more than others but that is to be expected in any group setting.

Ali was our expedtion leader and she was amazing throughout. We had great weather and we were able to accomplish so many activites throughout the voyage. When you think about what it takes to operate so many activities and the amount of staff and resources that takes, it is amazing what they accomplished. I enjoyed interacting with Mauricio, Colin, Nix, Alice, Emily, Juju, Clement, Gordo all from the Expedition team. There were so many aboard and they were all personable and accessible. I enjoyed talking with them at meals or in the lounge as well as on the excursions. Many of the staff had worked with Quark for 10+ years in both Arctic and Antarctica.

Be ready to be flexible and to be active. Luggage requirements for the charter flights were a challenge so plan to pack light and efficient

The vessel is luxurious, cabins and public areas first rate.

The buffet was more appealing with more choices than the restaurant which tried hard to be innovative, but missed appealing to me.

[I most enjoyed]...Seeing 13 polar bears in 6 days acting in a natural way, showing curiosity but no fear. The vastness of the sea and landscape. Riding in a dogsled. Wish we had more chances to visit land and see Arctic plants.

Be prepared to be in awe.

Steve Moir expedition leader had unlimited enthusiasm that was contagious. Naturalists Alize Fouchard, Alexandra Morozova, and Gordana Mrakovcic not only led walks but also gave excellent lectures. Ornithologist Manuel Marin was special, as was local guide Jaakusaaq Soerensen, who taught us about Inuit culture, religion, and language.

There were more English speakers on this cruise than my previous Ponant cruise. Had good interactions with a good number of them.

Andrew Browning never misses a detail in preparing me for my trips. Can’t ask for better. I recommend AdventureSmith Explorations to friends and family frequently.

First rate all the way!

Liked the wide variety at each meal. It was nice to have wine served with dinner. Deserts were fantastic. I liked the fact that you could also order items that were served daily at lunch and dinner. An example would be to get a hamburger at lunch or a grilled chicken breast at dinner. That was nice. Only thing a did not like were the cookies. They were bland.

Wow! So much beauty in Greenland! We LOVED the kayaking amid the huge icebergs. That was our favorite experience. We also LOVED the helicopter rides, especially over the ice sheet. It was jaw dropping! We enjoyed meeting some of the Greenlanders on our stops at the villages. They had a choir which performed for us. It was wonderful.  I'm sure they spent a lot of time practicing. The hikes we took were all great and each one was a little different. We really enjoyed doing the Polar Plunge! It was more fun than I expected. Plus, we received a "badge" showing our Arctic Polar Plunge had been accomplished.  LOVED the shot of Vodka too!

Go! The trip was even better than I expected!

Allison Gordan (Our leader) was incredible!!! She guided this cruise through unexpected weather in order that we could enjoy every aspect of this tour that we had hoped for. We were able to do everything because of her determination to give us the best trip possible. She is a wonderful speaker too. Funny, but professional.  What really impressed me was that she called us by name after a couple of days on the trip. There were 3 of us together, and she got the names right every time. There were 160 guests on this ship. How does she do that?? She certainly made us feel important. Plus, she was so nice to talk to. Answered all of our questions. She was just wonderful. We also really enjoyed her father, Ian Gordan. He was funny, personable, and a true professional. Also, kudos to our Nix, our photographer. She did a great job and fun to be with. Other great staff members included Marla, Alice, Peter, Fabrece, Neil, actually everyone was super great and extremely helpful no matter what we needed.

We met so many great people from Ireland, Australia, England, South Africa, America, Canada. Some of whom I will never forget!

Everything was perfect! Arielle was fantastic. She was right there anytime we needed anything. Outstanding service and friendly too!

Visiting Greenland On An Expedition Cruise

greenland cruises from usa

For the longest time, I’ve wanted to travel to Greenland . It’s been up there, and I’ve visited other far-flung destinations like Antarctica and Nepal . Finally, after many years of planning, we made this a reality; we booked a tour that would have us visiting Greenland on an expedition.

Okay, rewind. We had this trip planned for many years; it’s been on the card for a while, and my excitement grew even more as the departure date edged closer. Finally, after years of waiting, it was time to set sail, and we were so excited.

Now, there are a few choices for expedition companies that go to remote places like Greenland , so it was mind-boggling to choose the right one. We’d already undertaken an Antarctic expedition with Albatros Expeditions on their ship, Ocean Victory.

So, when we heard they had a brand-spanking new ship, Ocean Albatros, we knew we had to book it. We absolutely loved our Antarctic Cruise with Albatros Expeditions and just knew this expedition would be the same.

After much too-ing and frow-ing about the Expedition we wanted, we finally decided on ‘ In The Wake Of Erik ’. The expedition was to take around 10-11 days, departing from Reykjavik in Iceland and ending in Kangerlussuaq (one of the largest, but still tiny, airports in Greenland). It’s an ex-US-airforce base, and its location is ideal as it’s protected from the harsh winds and extreme weather systems that can affect Greenland. I’d delve deeper, but that’s a whole new blog post.

As the embarkation date approached, we booked our flight from London to Reykjavik and stayed overnight before boarding Ocean Albatros, our ship, from Reykjavik harbour. This was the first time it really sunk in that we were about to remark on visiting Greenland on an expedition.

Naturally, we used this opportunity to eat our way around Reykjavik. The city has many tasty restaurants , and we darted straight to our favourite, Messinn .

Visit Iceland Reykjavik Messinn Food Restaurant

After filling up on Plokkfiskur, a tasty stew-like dish of vegetables and freshly baked fish, we had a good night’s sleep at the Exeter Hotel . It overlooks Reykjavik Harbour, which was great as we’d be able to spot the ship once it arrived in port.

Honestly, my excitement was through the roof, especially after waking up and seeing Ocean Albatros in the harbour.

Fast-forward a few hours, we headed for one final lunch before boarding Ocean Albatros at The Laundromat Cafe . It’s a great little spot for lunch, and a few minutes walk from Reykjavik Harbour.

Visit Iceland Reykjavik Food Restaurant The Laundromat Cafe

This made it the perfect choice to fill up, with just enough time to grab our bags that we left for the hotel and make our way to the ship.

After filling up, we boarded Ocean Albatros to start our trip, visiting Greenland on an expedition. I was so excited!

We checked into the room, which was a ‘category B’ room on the 4th floor—specifically, room 429, if you’re wondering. We ‘ve the balcony rooms onboard Ocean Albatros – but they do have other room categories to choose from.

The room was spacious, with a nice big bathroom and direct door access to the outside deck, which is great when you’re watching whales from inside.

Anyway, it was to take around 1.5-2 days (depending) to reach Greenland via the Denmark Strait, which is one of the choppiest oceans to sail through after Drake’s Passage in Antarctica .

And, you know what, it lived up to its reputation. This was going to be a choppy start for us visiting Greenland on an expedition.

The swells were massive, and the waves were pretty intense. So, after our first gorgeous sunset departing Reykavik , we kept ourselves inside and enjoyed the comfort of the restaurant, cocktail bar, and the onboard lectures that happened every day.

That’s the thing I love about Albatros Expeditions; each ship has a host of experts from geologists, biologists and conservationists who run lectures every day.

Best of all, you can actually tell that the team are passionate about the region. No questions are too tough and they all have time for you; which I love.

After a few dinners, a massage at the spa, a stop at the onboard gym and a few lectures, we were itching to reach Greenland.

As luck would have it, our captain came over the tannoy after two days of sailing to announce that Greenland was in sight. The excitement onboard Ocean Albatros was palpable.

You could sense the buzz and thrill that every guest was feeling. That feeling was magical and something I really won’t forget.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Albatros Expeditions Ocean Albatros Ship Onboard Daily Briefing

After a little briefing in the lecture hall, we headed straight to the ship’s top deck. We were to sail via Prince Christian Sound in the region around Ikerasassuaq.

We were to sail past the southernmost point of the Greenland icecap and sail west towards Aappilattoq and past Pamialluk Island.

After a few minutes on the top deck, just on the horizon, we spotted Greenland. It was around 20 nautical miles away, but it was there.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland With Albatros Expeditions

It was just the start of our Albatros Expedition, but it felt like we’d already accomplished so much.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland With Albatros Expeditions

Within around 1.5 hours, we’d reached the coast of Greenland. It was incredible to see and it felt like one of those moments that get seared into your core memory. It was beautiful, tranquil and right in front of us!

As we sailed through Prince Christian Sound, we saw the Greenland Icecap and just watched silently as we sailed through this ethereal landscape. It was (and is) beautiful.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Albatros Expeditions

Like, words don’t describe it enough, it was just so surreal to see. Like, there are very few times when you come across whole regions left completely untouched by human activity. This felt like one of them. Truly wild and totally beautiful.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Prince Christian Sound

We sat on the top deck for longer than I can remember, with a hot chocolate (with a dash of Baileys) and tea to stay warm. It was incredible.

We passed vast glacial valleys and some of the oldest stones in the world.

The stone (that makes up the mountains) is billions of years old and has stood proudly, only changing shape from tectonic and glacial influences. The landscape is so unique.

After a few hours, we decided to head onto the bridge to see the captain.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Prince Christian Sound

Unlike larger cruise ships, Albatros has an ‘open-door’ policy where expedition guests can freely head to the bridge and see the ship being steered.

It was so interesting to see, especially the intricacies involved in getting our Ocean Albatros through Prince Christian Sound.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Prince Christian Sound

As we sailed further east, we finally reached Nunarssuaq Island and the southern tip of Greenland . We were back out onto the open ocean to follow the coast north for the next seven days.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Prince Christian Sound

It was tough to make a call and go to bed and miss the views. This was especially true as it was still light until around 1 am.

Expedition Cruise To Greenland Vacation Prince Christian Sound

Though we had so much more to see, we hurried to bed, ready for tomorrow’s visit to one of Greenland’s many islands, specifically Uunartoq Island and its geothermal Hot Springs . Our trip to Greenland on an expedition had just begun.

9-Month World Cruise Ends Today as Passengers Admit They're 'Exhausted' and Grateful for ‘Beautiful’ Voyage

Royal Caribbean’s Ultimate World Cruise officially ended on Tuesday, Sept. 10 after it sailed for 274 nights and visited more than 65 countries

Natalia Senanayake is an Editorial Assistant, Lifestyle at PEOPLE. She covers all things travel and home, from celebrities' luxury mansions to breaking travel news.

greenland cruises from usa

Ultimate World Cruise passengers are officially saying goodbye to the Serenade of the Seas after an epic nine-month journey.

For almost a year, the cruise’s famous passengers have documented the highs and lows of the lengthy sailing, from the moment it departed from Miami on Dec. 10, 2023. Nine months later, the passengers are finally back on solid land Tuesday, September 10, and having mixed feelings.

Some revealed to USA Today that they were “exhausted” at certain points of the voyage, but are still grateful for the experience. The sailing consisted of four legs, stopped in over 65 countries and made its way to all seven continents, so it’s understandable that some cruisers felt drained during the long trip.

“It’s a blur,” one of the ship's Tiktok famous passengers, Adita Larson , said of the journey, especially the cruise’s Europe leg. “We don’t know where we were yesterday; we don’t know where we’re going tomorrow," she added.

Some cruisers recall their friends being so wiped out from all the ports of call that they decided to sit out certain shore excursions and rest on the ship. Others recalled changing their minds about the once-dreaded "sea days" and instead looking forward to a relaxing day on the open ocean.

Despite the 274-night adventure tiring cruisers like Larson out, it brought them to destinations that were absolutely “beautiful,”  she notes — especially the icebergs in Antarctica.

“You can't video and you can’t photograph how beautiful it is to stand in front of those icebergs and see them right in front of your eyes so close,” she told the outlet.

She also noted the sense of community that formed among passengers, as there were about 650 longterm Ultimate World Cruisers in addition to new passengers coming in and out with every leg.

The social media-savvy cruiser says she plans to continue documenting her life, “especially after we get home, the adjustment after nine months of being away from home, and sleeping on a bed that's not rocking anymore."

Royal Caribbean

While Royal Caribbean gave travelers a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the cruise line did face some unexpected challenges regarding itinerary changes due to political unrest and unsafe conditions in some regions, and when they confirmed the death of a passenger in February.

In January, cruiser Brandee Lake opened up about the updates that were made to the original voyage .

"The itinerary has changed a bit a couple of times. Because when we first signed up, Russia and Ukraine were on it," Lake told PEOPLE at the time. " Israel was also on [the itinerary], and now it's not."

Royal Caribbean confirmed to PEOPLE in January that it was going to cancel the original itinerary through the Red Sea and Suez Canal in May to keep its passengers and crew members safe. Cruisers ended up voting on a more “scenic route” that would navigate around Africa and add many new ports of call.

Passengers began preparing to re-enter land-lover life last week.

Another famous passenger, Dr. Jenny, who goes by drjennytravels on TikTok, has been documenting the ups and down of the entire journey. Last week, as she counted down the final days, she opened up about how “bizarre” it is to see the voyage come to an end.

“Look at this,” she said in a  TikTok  shared on Tuesday, Sept. 3. Pointing to a sign on a cabin door, she continues, “Seven days left. This is in my hall for the World Cruise and as you can see — look at all the luggage out here.”

“This is just bizarre. We have watched people put their luggage out here as they’ve come and gone, but now this is us. This is World Cruisers,” she says of the last people on board, adding that it was a “sad day" for her.

According to various Tiktokers, rumors of a second world cruise are already swirling on board, but Royal Caribbean has not yet made any announcements about another voyage.

Audrey Martucci had never been on a cruise before booking a nine-month sailing with Royal Caribbean International .

The travel was one appeal, but the 60-year-old had another motivation. Her husband, Joe, had “no intention” of retiring, according to Audrey. “And so when the travel agent contacted us, and he called me, my first thought was, ‘Well, this will mean that you'll retire, so I'll say yes to this cruise,’” she said, laughing.

She and Joe – an avid cruiser – took a few sailings to warm up for the Ultimate World Cruise , which departed from Miami in December. “But nothing can prepare you for nine months,” said Joe, 67.

The Orlando, Florida, couple, who are now both retired, dove into travel. They sold their car, and their nephew moved into their house while they made the Serenade of the Seas ship their home.

The 274-night cruise visiting more than 60 countries garnered widespread attention in the weeks following its departure. Dispatches from passengers went viral on TikTok, amplified by other users recapping the latest developments and subsequent media reports.

Ahead of the sailing’s conclusion on Tuesday, USA TODAY spoke with several guests about what it was like spending nearly a year sailing around the world.

‘This ship was going places that I’d never been’

The length of the cruise allowed the ship to visit a wide range of destinations. That was a big draw even for guests like Joe Martucci, who had traveled extensively for work. “This ship was going places that I’d never been,” he said. Those included Buenos Aires, Argentina – allowing him and Audrey to see the sun rise over Iguazu Falls – and Copacabana Beach in Brazil.

Adita Larson, a guest from Houston, said Antarctica was her favorite destination. “You can't video and you can’t photograph how beautiful it is to stand in front of those icebergs and see them right in front of your eyes so close,” said the 64-year-old.

Royal Caribbean also curated experiences for passengers. Brandee Lake, 47, had been to the Great Wall of China before, but the cruise line offered an exclusive tour of the Badaling section this time around. “So, it was super exciting to have it basically private for our group,” said Lake, who was previously based in Los Angeles. “Like, when does that happen?”

She also seized opportunities to set out on her own. When the ship skipped a stop in Madagascar due to a storm, for example, Lake flew there herself for a brief visit.

But visiting even the most exciting places can take a toll after a while. The ship’s Europe segment that began in July was quite port-heavy, with only a handful of sea days in the first couple of months. Larson said many folks on board complained of being “exhausted.”

“It’s a blur,” she said. “We don’t know where we were yesterday; we don’t know where we’re going tomorrow.”

The Martuccis echoed the sentiment. At one point during the cruise, a friend of theirs stayed behind while their partner took a shore excursion. “And I remember coming back and saying to Joe, ‘You can do that? We don’t have to go?’ ” Audrey recalled. “That was, like, a huge revelation to me.”

At the beginning of the cruise, they said many guests “hated” days without any stops. “Now we’re all like, ‘Oh my god, a sea day. This is so good,’ ” she said.

The trip didn’t always go as originally planned, either. Royal Caribbean rerouted the vessel earlier this year amid continued attacks in the Red Sea, for example. Rather than transiting through the Suez Canal, the ship sailed an alternate path around Africa.

Lake said canceled ports during the voyage served as a “reminder to be flexible.”

“I think if I learned anything, it’s to expect the unexpected,” she said.

The ship also saw flooding in parts of the ship amid rough weather off the coast of South America in January, and the line confirmed the death of a passenger in February.

Story continues below.

‘Just like any other community’

Cruise ships are often described as cities at sea, and the Ultimate World Cruise fostered a neighborly sense of camaraderie, passengers said.

“I mean, obviously, it’s just like any other community,” said Lake. “You have the people that you are really close to, some of them are acquaintances, maybe some that are not your people, but nothing wrong. It’s just, you have your group that you naturally gel with.”

Outside of roughly 650 Ultimate World Cruise guests, the sailing was also sold in segments, bringing new folks into the mix every couple of months or so. If passengers ever need space, Audrey Martucci said, they can find solace in their cabins. “Or there’s lots of spaces on the ship that you can go and hide,” she said.

And while the Martuccis took pains to prepare themselves for the trip – they even scoped out the ship during one of their practice cruises – spending so much time with one another was a change. “We went from him working full time to all of a sudden, we're in these small quarters together all the time, and we've done it,” she said. “So, anything else is going to be a breeze now.”

“And you haven’t tossed me overboard,” Joe added.

Guests help each other out, too. Larson said there is a group chat on Facebook where passengers can ask for items they need or post things they no longer want to exchange with one another.

Lake advised anyone thinking about taking a world cruise to pack light – a lesson she learned from experience. She brought three large suitcases, a rolling carry-on bag and a backpack. “I pared it down, and it's still just too much,” she said. “It's kind of like your own closet: you really only wear about 10% to 20% of it.”

While she felt she had too many shoes and rarely wore her accessories, other items like cubbies for the closet came in handy.

Still, the logistics of managing life can be more complex on a ship. Larson pointed to her condominium, which suffered minor damage during Hurricane Beryl . “So not being there to deal with things like that,” she said. “Of course, we could have gone home, but it wasn't that huge of an emergency.” She found other tasks, like paying bills, easy to keep up with online.

The Martuccis even managed to buy a car remotely, so they’ll have one when the cruise ends, and a home in Audrey’s native Scotland, where they plan to spend summers. “We’ve been able to function,” said Joe.

As for whether they got tired of the food, Joe said, “It's just like at home, you open your refrigerator and go, ‘That's all we have,’ and you decide to go out instead of eating (at home). You kind of get that feeling sometimes.” But he emphasized that compared to the earlier cruise they took on Serenade of the Seas, the culinary team “upped their game” for the nine-month sailing.

What is a world cruise?: It's not a 'shoot-from-the-hip decision'

Going viral

The attention the cruise received online caught passengers like the Martuccis off guard. They originally planned to share videos with their kids, who suggested they post on TikTok . Their follower count jumped from “almost none” to nearly 100,000 within a week, according to Joe.

“We fell into it, and we got caught up in this daily video,” Audrey said. “But it’s been great.”

Lake, who has been chronicling her trip online as well, echoed that, calling the experience a “surprise.” She and the Martuccis both noted they had been recognized by strangers on board.

Larson didn’t have a TikTok account when she boarded the ship, but she’s had fun sharing videos from the trip. She hopes to continue doing so back on land, “especially after we get home, the adjustment after nine months of being away from home, and sleeping on a bed that's not rocking anymore.”

Nine months at sea hasn’t soured them on travel. Larson has nearly 30 cruises booked, the first of which takes place in October. Lake, who gave up her apartment and a job in advertising and marketing to travel full-time, plans to start a new profession, organizing group trips.

The Martuccis also have many travel plans, including a family cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in January. “We're not going to let the grass grow under our feet,” said Joe.
