7 Lakes Wilderness Camps

We have fly-in outpost camps on lakes north of Nakina and in the heart of the best fishing region of Ontario. The secluded fly-in lakes area and famous rivers offer incredible fishing and spectacular views. Walleyes in our fly-in lakes are very common in the 1 to 3-pound range. You should catch a few in the 4 to 5-pound range during the day. Mid-spring before the big females go deep, you should catch a few in the 25 to 28-inch range and you can sacrifice numbers and try to fish deeper for 28 to 30-inch Walleyes. In the heat of summer, the 1 to 3-pound Walleyes are still the most common. Trolling close to shore at dusk and at night should produce a few Walleyes over 30 inches. On occasion, Walleyes in the 10 to 18-pound range get caught and released on our fly-in lakes. Learn more about 7 Lakes Wilderness Camps

Platte Creek Lodge

Guided Walleye Fishing

Walleye Fishing Guides

Columbia River Fishing Adventures are year-round walleye fishing guides offering guided walleye fishing trips in the Portland area as well as the Columbia River gorge. Many people have no idea that Walleye are among the best eating fish the northwest has to offer! Not only are they tasty these aggressive bitters are fun to catch. As a long-time fishing guide, I can honestly say there’s no fish I’d rather eat than walleye. Even better, we live in the heart of it all and catch and eat these delicious fish all the time and have been helping our clients do the same for years.

State record Walleye

In the Pacific Northwest the Columbia River is the number one walleye fishing spot in the region with healthy populations throughout the river system. The Columbia is not only known for the amount of walleye available, it’s also host to the largest walleye in the Pacific Northwest. The  Washington state record walleye  was caught right here on the Columbia and the second largest walleye ever caught in Oregon as well. The state record walleye for Oregon was actually caught on the  Umpqua river  which should be no surprise is a tributary of the Columbia. This means that the Columbia offers one of the richest bounties of walleye to be had.

Walleye Fishing Trips

Our  Columbia River Fishing Adventures  guided walleye fishing trips are fun for the whole family and since we’ve been doing it for so long, we know exactly where to catch them. Best of all we’ll help you fill your freezer with tons of the tastiest fish you’ll ever eat, it’s just a matter of reserving your seat on one of our walleye fishing boats for the fishing adventure of a lifetime. Granted the number one attraction to the Columbia is the excellent runs of both spring and fall Pacific Northwest salmon. However, when the salmon seasons starts to get slow, we like to switch it up and go after the filet mignon of the freshwater and our favorite fish to eat the Columbia River walleye. Yes, we fish for walleye all year long and just can’t get enough of them. If you were to join us on a walleye fishing trip, I’m sure you’d agree walleye are well worth the effort and are hard to beat at the dinner table.

Walleye Fishing Limits

Both Washington and Oregon allow virtually no limits on walleye. This means that you can literally keep as many fish as you can possibly catch. It’s not uncommon where we have days when we’ve put well over fifty fish in the boat. granted loading up like that doesn’t happen all the time, we can still put a whole bunch of fish in the boat. Keep in mind walleye are aggressive bitters. Basically, they will pretty much hit anything they can find dithering in the slack water. This makes for some easy fishing as the boat is pretty easy to manage in the slow flowing waters such as this.

Where to catch Walleye

Given we are based out of Portland, we like to target walleye in various sections of the Columbia all the way from our hometown of Portland up to the McNary in the John Day pool. Form the Willamette to the Bonneville there several excellent walleye fishing spots we like to focus on in the lower. However, we also work our way up river to fish the areas around the Dalles dam and in the Columbia River Gorge. All these are excellent spots to target walleye.

Keep in mind, walleye like to hang out under shelves in deep shady waters where they can ambush prey and avoid predictors. These fish have excellent low light vision and are very proficient feeders.  We like to target them in the eddies, tail outs and culverts where walleye tend to stack up.

Effective Methods for catching Walleye

When it comes to catching walleye it’s all about the power troll.  Power trolling is a technique where we let out a lot of line and then imitate the movements of  wounded bait fish  by quickly reeling in the line while making several jerking motions. When trolling the big water in larger rivers we like to fish in a zig-zag pattern which allows us to cover as much water as possible. This is especially effective when fishing areas with there lots of walleye are staged in large numbers like during the spring when they spawn.

Lure Colors for catching Walleye

When fish for walleye in clear water conditions, we like to fish lures that are more natural, comparable to the various bait fish that live in the local waters of the Columbia. For example lures in blues, silver, whites, and black are all similar to various bait fish like shad, herring, smelt, and so on. Also, when fishing in murky water conditions, we go with the brighter colors like chartreuse, yellow, orange, and red. Since these particular colors are more visible, they tend to be effective in water that offers poor visibility. Another technique is that we troll our gear as close to the bottom and possible. The key is to get your bait down low without getting snagged up. We generally start out at about 20 ft. deep. and work our way down depending on what the fish finder is telling us. Once you get the gear down deep just off the bottom where the fish are, its game on or more appropriately fish on!

Best time to fish for Walleye

Walleye feed primarily during low light conditions like just around sunset or sunup. This is when they tend to hang out in the shallow areas of the Columbia and are probably the easiest to catch. Targeting walleye during this time is perfect for keeping the trip alive after successfully catching limits of salmon.  Remember a day trip is 8 hrs. we suggest to use your time wisely and get the most from your trip. Fishing double species is common when fishing with Columbia River Fishing Adventures and our clients love it as well. Also you might want to try fishing for walleye near the shore at night. This is when they are looking to catch some easy prey hiding out in the weeds feasting on bait fish. As far as seasons, walleye are fishable all year long. They’ll even feed in the debt of winter when the river is covered with ice or the middle of summer when the columbia River reaches a bit warmer temperatures. Rest assured, if you go on a guided walleye fishing trip with us, no matter what time of the season, winter, spring, or fall you’ll experience the thrill of catching these wonderful fish.

Snake River Walleye Fishing Trips

Most people are familiar with walleye that live in the upper mid-western section if the United States. Walleye are typically the fish of many a story around the cabin in the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan where there tends to be excitement about a walleye that is larger than five to six pounds.  Well, the walleye that have come to be in abundance throughout a specific section of the Snake River in Washington known as Lyons Ferry not only supports a large population of walleye but it also supports walleye that can grow to 15 pounds.

They are plentiful numbers of walleye in the one to eight pound range, but we want to guide you into your trophy walleye that is over 10 pounds.

Also, walleye are well known for how great they taste and are similar in texture to a saltwater rock cod. Just ask our guide Jim McCarthy (that's Jim in the photo) for his favorite walleye recipe as Jim actually prefers eating walleye over salmon!

Fall (Sept thru Nov) Snake River Walleye Fishing Trips

walleye12.jpg

The cooling temperatures of the fall cause the water temps to drop and walleye start to eat heavily knowing that the colder winter months are not too far off.  We troll in a variety of depths with different style crankbaits as well as using bottom-walkers that have different baits in order to get em to strike at this time of year.

Winter (Dec-Feb) Snake River Walleye Fishing Trips

bigwalleye.jpg

Winter at the walleye fishing grounds in Lyons Ferry brings out the biggest 'donkey-sized' walleye typically. We usually are fishing with a slower style set-up such as worm-harnesses are well as a slowly trolled deep running crankbait.

Spring (March thru May) Snake River Walleye Fishing Trips

walleye fishing trips.jpg

Spring at the walleye fishing grounds brings on the pre-spawn and spawn bite. These are days where you can typically catch a pile of walleye in the one to five pound range as the male walleye are eagerly moving around looking to spawn with the females. It's not unusual to get a 'donkey-sized' female larger than 10 pounds at this time of year as well.

About Randy Bethe

Being a fisherman for most his life, Randy started fishing trout streams in Northern Wisconsin as a young boy. He was so determined to go fishing, he would pack his fishing gear on his bike and ride it through the woods in order to get to those hard to get to spots. When Randy got his first boat his passion for the sport just continued on. He fished for Muskie, Northern, Bass, and panfish. It didn't matter what kind of fish it was, his passion for fishing continued to grow. Even when raising a family Randy was still able to get on the water, not as often as he liked, but often enough to give the same passion to his son, who today is his tournament partner. Together they fish for walleyes on Green Bay, and lake Winnebago. Over the many years Randy has fished, his passion has focused him on one fish, Walleyes! One of Randy's assets is to give anybody the knowledge to put fish in the boat whether it be your personal trophy or just a meal of fresh fish.

Guided Walleye Fishing Trips

Walleye fishing in the Pacific Northwest has vastly become one of the hottest destination fisheries in the United States. Stott’s fishing team offers guided walleye fishing trips year-round. The Columbia and Snake Rivers offer killer fishing as well as  Potholes Reservoir . Walleye were introduced to this part of the country in the early 1960’s and since have flourished in our river systems. Abundant food sources and plenty of structure creates perfect conditions for growing trophy sized fish. We catch lots of 2 to 4 pound fish that are best known for the excellent table fare. Most important, our anglers choose to hire our guide service to chase the potential new world record. The current Washington State record, weighing just over 20 pounds was caught right in our back yard. Matter of fact, most of our trophy walleye come from this area of the Tri-Cities.

Pacific Northwest Strong in Walleye Numbers

Guides and Tournament anglers believe that the next world record will come from this same area we fish. Walleye populations on the Columbia are growing stronger and stronger every year. In fact, Washington and Oregon Fish & Game removed a daily limit on walleyes.

Stott’s walleye fishing guides aim to provide opportunity for harvesting this tasty white meat while protecting the future of trophy sized fish. We do recommend releasing walleye in the 26 – inch class. In the hope that you catch a trophy, we’ll be happy to take measurements and pics for your taxidermist. Our walleye trips are great for anglers of all ages and experience levels. We can combine the trip with sturgeon, bass, perch, crappie and even salmon depending on time of year.

40 Years Combined Walleye Fishing

Stott’s fishing guides have been chasing Columbia River walleye for a combined 40 years. We are committed to providing great opportunity for catching fish year around. Our experiences taken from of our Great Lake techniques are used on our rivers and reservoirs of the Pacific northwest. The Columbia River walleye fishing is great from January pre-spawn through November. Beautiful Potholes Reservoir fishes until ice on. In January, walleye migration starts as the fish move toward the spawning areas. Walleye start to become very active when water temperatures reaches the lower 40° and fish begin to spawn in upper 40° degrees temperatures. Spring time of the year, we will be fishing the Umatilla Pool around the Tri Cites area. There’s great fishing all the way down river from McNary Dam to the John Day. We also fish hard around the Irrigon, Boardman, Patterson, Crowe Butte and John Day areas.

Excellent Fishing on 29k Acres

The 29,000 acres Potholes Reservoir fishes excellent for eater sized fish but can also produce fish into the teens. Post spawn on both fisheries is a great time to catch lots of fish targeting more the males. Fishing through the summer months can be enjoyable with nice warm weather and schooling fish. Temperatures can reach the 90’s so if you’re interested in swimming with a 10-foot sturgeon, combine your walleye with a sturgeon trip. Fall walleye fishing on the Columbia can be challenging as the Hanford Reach salmon fishery is in full effect. Millions of shad line the river and there is no shortage of feed for the walleye. Best option is to pull crankbaits at night or fish Potholes for some excellent fall walleye fishing .

Catch Trophy Walleye Pre-Spawn

We get asked the question a lot, when is the best time of the year to fish. My answer is this, pre-spawn you chase trophy fish and catch 15-20 eater sized walleye with your group of 3 to 4 anglers, post spawn through the summer months we can expect more numbers and fewer big fish. With all our guided trips we supply the bait & tackle, beverages and cook our anglers a tasty, hot BBQ lunch. We guarantee at least 8 hours of fishing, cleaning and bagging your catch, and a great overall fishing experience.

Walleye Fishing On The Columbia River

The Columbia River is the largest river in the Pacific Northwest and forms most of the border between Washington and Oregon. Our walleye fishing guide services operate on 150 miles of river section that mainly focuses on the Mid-Columbia waters between Priest Rapids down to the Umatilla Pool of the Rufus area. The Columbia’s most popular locations are around the Lake Wallula area of the Tri Cities which provides most of our pre-spawn fishing. Lake Umatilla offers us excellent fishing opportunities which is just down river from the Tri Cities. Depending on weather and water conditions, we will move around according to the best fishing opportunities. There are numerous boat ramps that we launch from starting at McNary Dam, working down through Plymouth, Irrigon, Paterson, Blalock Island, Glade Creek, Boardman, and Crow Butte.

Channel & Hard Bottom Flats Walleye Fishing

The Columbia River has lots of channels adjacent to hard bottom flats that extend up to points creating breaks from the rivers current. We isolate on current line breaks and fish structure though-out the flats. Our guides are experienced in the most advanced walleye techniques and will explain the successful methods during the morning briefing. Some of our favorite lures and techniques are pulling worm harnesses, trolling crank baits, blade baits, jig fishing, dipsy & spoons, board fishing, jigging raps and throwing swim baits. We specialize in lite line tackle and use the finest Edge Rods .

Fishing the Best Areas

Our dedicated team of guides are committed to fishing anglers in the best possible water to catch fish. We will move around throughout these areas based on best fishing spots but always keep safety in the forefront. Water flow, Wind, and moon phases will all play into making good choices. If you have a favorite technique, don’t hesitate to let our guides know at safety briefing.

Potholes Reservoir Walleye Trips

Located 7 miles south of Moses Lake Washington, Potholes Reservoir offers 29,000 acres of year around fishing. Most anglers travel to this Eastern Washington fishery for the great walleye fishing it produces but the reservoir also offers a variety of other fishing opportunities such as crappie, perch, trout, large & smallmouth bass. Winter – time on the lake presents some excellent ice fishing and during the spring, Potholes is one of the most productive walleye fisheries in the region. There is no shortage of feed on Potholes with lots of excellent staging areas for spawning walleye.

Find Bait Fish – Score Walleye

Best fishing is where you find perch and other bait fish. There is drop offs and underwater humps, gravel points, ledges that create awesome holding water for schooling fish. Potholes Reservoir fishing changes though-out the course of the year and our guides work it accordingly. We’ll target as many of our spots that we have marked on the fish finder over the course of the day until we find a large population of fish. There are many times we’ll jig fish up in 30-40 foot of water and other times we catch them in 7-10 foot, pulling cranks or casting blade baits. Some of the more productive areas we fish are the rock shelves around Goose Island, mouth of Crab Creek and the North shoreline of Linn Coulee. Road and creek beds sit between the face of the dunes that make for some great blade bait fishing.

Cutting Edge Walleye Techniques

Boards and cranks are very popular when targeting suspended fish. Our walleye fishing guides are very proactive when it comes to changing techniques and staying in tune with what the walleye want. Snake River Walleye Trips

Our Snake River Walleye Fishing is our sleeper fishery. And, we say this quietly! Because it’s considered off the beaten path, there is very little boat traffic. Most importantly, the Snake River holds big fish! In fact, we’ve boated 15 lb. walleye. The 100-mile section offers our guide service some prime walleye fishing year-round. There are 4 dams located on the Snake river, unquestionably creating excellent habitat for growing big fish. Lower Granite, Little Goose, Lower Monumental and Ice Harbor Dam altogether form these excellent areas. The rivers sections have unique characteristics that make for variable fishing techniques. Bays, flats, underwater islands, humps, cliffs, and drop offs all create transition water. Tributaries from small rivers and creeks create perfect spawning areas. Furthermore, we have 5 different locations with boat ramps and parks to meet our fishing clients. Let us know which area is most convenient for your group.

Central Ferry Walleye – Lake Bryan

We access the Central Ferry boat ramp for meeting clients and our launch site. The upper area of the Lake Bryan section has lots of flats and transition water. Small creeks dump in and make for prime bait fish water. Down river we find deeper channels with ledges that border flats. Just above the Little Goose Dam holds the deepest water. This is important for wintering walleye! This section has very limited fishing pressure and holds good numbers and big fish

Lyons Ferry Walleye – Lake Herbert

Undoubtedly, Lyons Ferry is the most popular section on the snake river system. Also known as the Lake Herbert area, this section holds big fish. With this in mind, you’ll find a little more fishing pressure. We break this section into halves, both equally having excellent fishing. Up-river towards the Little Goose Dam has faster river current. We find schooling walleye on flats inside current breaks. The pre-spawn hot spot is at the mouth of the Palouse River. Steep cliffs with humps and structure hold big walleye. Down-river towards Lower Monumental Dam is prime fishing. The rivers banks have numerous fingers with humps perfect for holding bait fish. Our trips are accessed from the Lyons Ferry Marina boat ramp.

Lower Monumental Walleye – Lake Sacajawea

The Snake has many turns and bends to it’s winding waterways. Our guides consider this a fairly narrow and shallow presentation. Under-water islands, bays and heavy structure line the rivers bottom. This section is super stealthy holding big fish that is just off the Columbia. The deepest spots are near the Ice Harbor Dam which is considered wintering walleye water. The Lower Monumental area creates perfect habitat for pitching swim baits and other plastics. We can access either Fish-Hook Park or the Levey Landing Park for meeting clients. There is very little fishing pressure on the Lake Sacajawea section.

Ice Harbor Hood Park Walleye – Lake Wallula

Walleye anglers fishing the Columbia love to access the boat launch at Hood Park. Also, considered the Burbank Heights, this section still belongs to the Snake river. The Snake typically fires up a little earlier than its big brother, Columbia River. Especially with the water temperatures being a bit warmer. Pre-spawn, we’ll hit the upper Strawberry island area, fishing the narrow channel. Under-water stumps and narrow flats next to shallow bays make up most of this section. The Burlington Northern bridge fishes well on both sides as well below the route 12 bridges. Fishing this section offers us the luxury of accessing the Columbia river.

  Snake River Fishing Techniques

As noted, Snake River fishing is super diverse. The Snake definitely will test a guide and his knowledge base. Although we love to fish crankbaits and crawler harnesses, other techniques play a part. Casting swimbaits, jigging blade baits, and finesse fishing is part of our arsenal. We feel really froggy in saying, cutting edge technology takes up space in our guide service. On every guided trip, we’ll share our thoughts to what the best techniques will be for catching fish. With this being said, the walleye will let us know!

Walleye Fishing Techniques

We chase walleye year-round on Pacific Northwest’s premier rivers and reservoirs. The Snake and Columbia rivers offer spectacular trophy walleye fishing. Moses Lake and Potholes Reservoir create dynamite destination trips. Although we have 60 years combined walleye fishing experience, our guides continue to raise the bar. Walleye fishing requires patience and in-depth attention to detail. Each season offers different conditions that effect lure and bait choices. We have learned that preparation and process get tested often.

Innovative Approach to Choosing Techniques

Stott’s guide service delivers the most innovative approach to choosing technique applications on our fisheries. Crawler Harness, Blade Baits, Swim Baits, Crank Baits, Soft Jigs, Ripping Raps, Jerk Baits and spoon fishing are all essential baits to catching walleye. Our Columbia River fishing covers Tri-Cities, Umatilla, Boardman, Irrigon, Crow Butte, Hanford Reach, Lake Wallula, Lake Umatilla, McNary Dam, John Day, Rufus and Kettle Falls. Snake River fisheries consist of Lyons Ferry, Lake Sacajawea, Lower Monumental, Lake Herbert, Little Goose and Lake Bryan.

CATCHING WALLEYE HAS NEVER BEEN EASIER

We do the work, so you can catch fish.

If you love to catch walleye, you’re in the right place. Charter fishing for walleye on Lake of the Woods has many advantages. The biggest one is that you don’t need a boat or gear. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned angler, just show up, hop on a boat, and catch fish. Charters are also perfect for a group or family trip. And our boats are big and comfortable. We’ll even clean the fish and have it cooked for you back at the lodge if you like!

Our guides are Professional Coast Guard Licensed Captains with the experience and knowledge to put you on fish. We offer charter trips on our fleet of 27′ Sportcraft boats, allowing up to 6 people per boat. Our standard trip is 9 hours long from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. All charter fishing adventures include rods and reels, tackle, bait and fish cleaning and packaging. Guests on our meal plan can enjoy a bag lunch with a large deli sandwich and snacks. We also offer shorelunch at certain times of the season.

If you don’t own a boat, or have never caught a walleye, this is the perfect adventure for you. Come up and fish with us this season!

WALLEYE CHARTER TRIPS

May – october.

Our Walleye charter trips are available from the May Walleye opener through the end of October. You can expect to travel anywhere from 1 mile to 30 miles on a charter. We’ll go where we need to go to put you on fish! Where you fish will also depend on the time of year and the wind direction/weather. Being located on the end of the Rainy River allows us to take guests fishing on the river even when the weather/wind makes the lake nearly unfishable. Our guides are always on the water, ensuring they can put you on a big school of Lake of the Woods Walleye.

GUIDED STURGEON TRIPS

When most all other fishing is closed, the Sturgeon are on the move in the Rainy River. If you have never caught a sturgeon, then put this on your list this year! Nothing compares to catching a giant sturgeon that bends the rod in half and puts up an incredible fight. The spring keep season is from April 24th through May 7th, but catch and release is allowed before and after the season.

There are over 100,000 sturgeon over 40 inches roaming our waters, according to Minnesota DNR. So your chances of tying into one of these giants is pretty good. Our guides have all the gear and know where the fish are.

* Guest will need to purchase a Minnesota fishing license prior to fishing, and a Sturgeon tag is just $5.

Where to Go Fishing Near Me | The 20 Best Fishing Spots in Indy

F ishing with kids is a great way to teach them patience and life skills while having them immersed in nature. With beginners, though, you’ll want the perfect spot where they have a good chance of catching something and where there are other things to do, like run to the playground , in case they lose interest. If you’re wondering “where to go fishing near me?” and not sure where to start, we’ve got you covered with a list of the 20 best fishing spots in and around Indianapolis.

Where to Go Fishing Near Me

The benefits of fishing are numerous, and many families enjoy the experience of spending time together in nature, exploring new places, and learning about different types of fish and their habitats. Fishing can also be a great way to relax and unwind, providing a sense of peace and tranquility that is hard to find in today’s busy world. For children, fishing can teach patience, perseverance, and the value of hard work, as well as provide an opportunity to learn about science and the natural world.

Fishing With Kids

Ready to begin your fishing adventure? You’ll need some fishing gear. If your kids have never tried fishing before, you probably don’t want to spend a lot of money, or any at all. Check out some of the Free Fishing Days sponsored by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR). They host several days each year where you don’t need to purchase a fishing license and in some cases, they’ll have kids’ fishing derby and learn to fish events where they provide the equipment for you!

If you’re interested in trying fishing on your own but don’t want to spend a lot of money, here are two fishing setups we’ve used from Amazon (affiliate links). This one is just a fishing pole and this one is a whole junior fishing kit .

The 20 Best Fishing Spots in Indy

These 20 fishing spots across Central Indianapolis feature great fishing for beginners through experts, some also offering amenities such as restrooms, playgrounds, splash pads, and more! 5 Tips for Fishing with Kids

from Clint Kowalik , owner of Go Fishin with Clint

  • Make it a short trip or break up the fishing with playground fun, a picnic, or a short hike or green space runaround.
  • Use simple fishing equipment like cane poles or spin cast (closed-face) fishing combos.
  • Hunt for worms in your compost or garden or in your yard after rain. Little pieces of hot dogs also work as bait in a pinch.
  • Bring and use bug spray, sunscreen, snacks, water, and hand sanitizer or wipes. Pack a first aid kit, just in case.
  • Make the fishing more about the experience with family outdoors than catching fish. Pay attention to clouds, birds, and dragonflies. It’s okay to talk and laugh. The fish won’t mind.

Clint Kowalik is the owner of Go Fishin with Clint . For 12 ½ years, Clint ran the DNR’s sport fishing education program. Now he shares his passion for fish, fishing, and the outdoors through his business with folks across central Indiana. He gives fishing lessons to individuals, families, libraries, camps, churches, and parks… he can even help you throw a fishing birthday party! Follow his adventures on his Facebook page .
