Though you won't find Eeylops Owl Emporium, Flourish and Blotts, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes or Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions in London 's streets, that doesn't mean you can't indulge in the world of "Harry Potter." Knowledgeable witches and wizards lead themed tours that discuss not only filming locations for the beloved Potter films, but also the wizarding world's most famous individuals like Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore and He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.

Consulting Muggle traveler opinion as well as expert input from the top witches and wizards, U.S. News & World Report found the best Harry Potter London tours on offer.

Note: These tours take place on foot, by bus or on trains, so it's best to leave your brooms and Floo powder at home.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter

Price: From 53.50 pounds (around $67) per person Duration: 3.5 hours

For Potterheads, no trip to London is complete without a stop to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter , which explores how the "Harry Potter" films were made. During the self-guided visit, travelers will wander the Diagon Alley set, board the Hogwarts Express, view props and costumes and much, much more. Visit around Halloween for the Dark Arts or the winter holidays for Hogwarts in the Snow; the tour is decked out in seasonal décor for both events.

"As both a filmmaker and 'Harry Potter' fan, I was absolutely blown away by this tour," says Leilani Osmundson , senior digital producer at U.S. News Travel. "The sets, props and costumes were incredible and very well-maintained, and there were written explanations for almost everything." Osmundson suggests staying at the back of the group when entering the Great Hall for a chance to snag photos with fewer people in the shot when the group moves on. Keep in mind, this great experience comes with equivalent fees: Travelers warn of high ticket prices and expensive souvenirs. To avoid crowds, get to the studio early.

The tour is self-paced and you can explore as long as you wish. The tour is located in Leavesden, Watford, which is about 20 miles northwest of central London. Take the train to Watford Junction then board the complimentary shuttle to the studio.

It also features the original Hogwarts Express, a scale model of Hogwarts, an exhibition of incredible costumes, and you can even buy a butter beer in the café.

As it’s located outside of central London, getting to Harry Potter Studios can be a little confusing, so often it’s more convenient to buy the ticket option, which includes transfers, especially if travelling with children.  However, we will explain both ways to get there.

If the date you want is already sold out, you can also try buying tickets here: Warner Bros Studios Tour

Buying Tickets and How to get to the Harry Potter Studios in London

It’s important to remember that you MUST buy tickets for the Harry Potter Studios well in advance. We really wouldn’t recommend going in the hope of being able to buy tickets on the day.

The studios are located 30 km from the centre of London, and there are two main ways of getting there.

Harry Potter Studio tour tickets with transfers from London included

The easiest way to get to the Harry Potter Studios is to buy the ticket which includes coach transfers from central London.  This way, you can get a coach from the centre of the city which takes you to the studios and back again.

Another nice option that we think is worthwhile, is to combine your trip with a visit to the city of Oxford. This organised tour provides direct transport to and from the centre of London.

You’ll need to take a train from central London to Watford Junction Station which is in London travel zone 9 . From there you can take a shuttle bus straight to the Warner Bros. Studios.

There are 2 options to get to Watford Junction:

  • By London Overground: (similar to the tube but doesn’t go underground) From Euston Station in London zone 1, the journey is 17 stops and takes approximately 50 minutes. It’s a direct line so you won’t need to change. You can use an Oyster Card for this journey but being in zone 9, the cost of each journey is usually between £5-9 for an adult depending on the time of day. As it’s still in a London zone, children under 10 travel free . The advantage of travelling to Watford Junction this way is that Overground trains depart every few minutes and you don’t need to book in advance.
  • By Train: From Euston Station you can also take an express train operated by West Midlands Railway which only takes around 15 minutes to Watford Junction. You can also use an Oyster Card for this journey (same price as using the Overground above), or you can also buy train tickets at the station or online in advance. As this train line isn’t operated by the transport network of London (TFL), it is necessary to buy tickets for children over 5 years. You can buy train tickets in advance and see the timetables at  Trainline .

Choosing between the Overground or the mainline train really just depends on your preferences.  The Overground will take longer, but whilst the train is quicker, it can work out more expensive, and you’ll need to buy tickets for children over five years old.

From Watford Junction Station, there is a shuttle bus direct to Warner Bros. Studios, which departs every 20 minutes and costs £2.50 per person (round trip). This takes 15 minutes to reach the studios and to get on this bus you must show your Harry Potter Studio Tour tickets.

We advise that you carefully calculate the travel time needed for the train and potentially wait for the bus so that you don’t arrive late and miss your slot. It’s recommended that you arrive at Watford Junction 45 minutes before the time of your Harry Potter tour.

10 must-see places for Harry Potter fans in London

As mentioned above, some of the scenes from the Harry Potter films were filmed at real places in London. You can easily visit these places, so why not create your own Harry Potter Tour of London? Alternatively, you can book a Harry Potter walking tour of London here .

We have put together a list of 10 places where they filmed scenes from Harry Potter in London:

Leadenhall Market

Leadenhall market is a beautiful, Victorian market used to film some Harry Potter scenes in London, including Diagon Alley.  This place already has a special atmosphere, but we’re sure you’ll feel your bit of Harry Potter magic as you pass through. Although it’s not far from the centre of London, it’s not a popular destination with tourists, but if you’re a fan of Harry Potter, pop by and take a look for yourself.

harry potter tour london 2023

Cecil Court

Although Leadenhall market was where they filmed scenes for Diagon Alley, it could be said that Cecil Court is a real-life Diagon Alley. Cecil Court is situated close to Charing Cross Station and is a small alley lined with quaint shops selling antiques and books. Another small corner of London that you can add to your own Harry Potter Tour of London.

Platform 9 ¾

No Harry Potter fan would turn down the opportunity to have their photo taken at the most famous train platform in the world, and when you visit London, you can make this a reality. Kings Cross Station is home to the famous Platform 9 ¾ , the departure point of the Hogwarts Express. It’s a delightful scene with a plaque on the wall saying Platform 9 ¾ and the luggage trolley disappearing through the wall – a Harry Potter photo opportunity at its best! The facade of St Pancras Station next door was also used as the exterior of the train station in the Harry Potter movies.

⇒ Find out more about Platform 9 ¾ in London here

Lambeth Bridge

Lambeth Bridge crosses the River Thames and is featured in the famous Harry Potter scene where the Knight Bus had to squeeze between 2 red London buses. Okay, we can’t provide the magic of the Knight Bus, but seeing this familiar bridge in real life is fun.

Borough Market

Located next to London Bridge, Borough Market is one of the must-see places in London. The entrance to the dripping cauldron of Harry Potter was filmed here, in one of the shops in Borough Market, which was a florist until recently. See if you can recognise it as you explore this famous market.

Millennium Bridge

London’s Millennium Bridge is the bridge that was destroyed in the 6 th saga of the Harry Potter films. In real life this bridge is the most famous pedestrian bridge crossing the River Thames, designed by architect Norman Foster. Luckily for us, this fantastic bridge is still standing, and you can enjoy beautiful views as you walk across it from the Tate Modern to St Paul’s Cathedra l on the opposite side. In the film, the London City Hall building workers next to Tower Bridge witness the dementor’s attack on Millennium Bridge.

Reptile House at London Zoo

It’s in the reptile house of London Zoo where Harry discovers he can talk to snakes in the first film Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. If you want to see if you can also speak to snakes, put London Zoo in Regent’s Park on your personal Harry Potter Tour of London.

Piccadilly Circus

Ron and Hermione are transported to Piccadilly Circus in the first part of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Piccadilly Circus is also one of the most famous places in London, so you’re bound to find yourself there, just like Ron and Hermione.

St Pancras Renaissance Hotel

Situated next to Kings Cross Station is the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel with its stunning neo-gothic architecture.  It is from this hotel that Harry and Ron take the Weasley family’s flying Ford Anglia after missing the Hogwarts Express in the second film – Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Other Harry Potter film locations in London

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, some characters fly on broomsticks over iconic London landmarks like Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast, the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. In the same film, Ron Weasley has problems with his ticket at Westminster tube station.  You’re bound to see most of these famous places on your trip to London.

UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs

🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?

Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.

🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?

Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.

🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?

The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.

🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?

For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.

📳 Will my phone work in the UK?

Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.

🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?

Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

There's even a chance for visitors to make their own origami howler, just like the one Mrs Weasley delivered to Ron in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The new Discovering Hogwarts exhibition will run from early May to September, before the return of the Dark Arts in time for Halloween season.

The event showcases everything sinister about Harry Potter - of which, let's face it, there's quite a lot - with dark makeovers of Diagon Alley and Platform 9 and 3/4 and the main event being a spooky makeover of the Great Hall which sees the ceiling decorated with over 100 floating pumpkins as well as a Halloween feast.

Visitors can also follow the Dark Mark trail, practice wand combat moves in live duels against Death Eaters.

The year will finish with the popular Hogwarts in the Snow makeover - where everything gets a decidedly festive tinge.

Yule Ball themed decoration at the Great Hall

The event sees the Great Hall kitted out for Christmas, while sets of everything from the Gryffindor dormitories to the potions room will also be given some festive finery.

Visitors also get the chance to learn the secrets behind ice that never melts and fire that doesn’t burn and see a blanket of filmmaking snow covering the Forbidden Forest, Diagon Alley and the jaw-dropping Hogwarts castle model.

Tickets for the Harry Potter Warner Bros Studio Tour are available to book now either as standalone tickets or as part of packages with travel and accommodation through companies like GoldenTours , Virgin Experience Days , BuyaGift .

Harry Potter Studio Tour Review: Everything You Need to Know for a Magical Visit

T his Harry Potter Studio Tour review will cover everything you need to know to plan a visit to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter.

If you are a Harry Potter fan planning a London itinerary you may want to include a visit to Warner Brothers Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter.

Although it is a bit outside the city, it may be worth it to take the journey to experience the tour.

We visited during our 12 day Europe itinerary and we had mixed feelings on it. Let’s dive into the details with my Harry Potter Studio Tour review.

Overview of Harry Potter Studio Tour London

The Warner Bros. Studio Tour London: The Making of Harry Potter is where the movie was made. The props and backlots are authentic to the films.

It is a unique place to visit being that the cast and production crew spent 10+ years making Harry Potter there. Now you get to see these items up close and experience the movies like never before.

Location & How to Get There

Harry Potter Studio Tour London is not actually in London. It is outside the city and the nearest train station is Watford Junction.

There are shuttle buses, that are included with your ticket admission, at the station to transport you to the Studio.

Visitors will want to take the London Euston train to Watford Station (around 20 minutes) and then the 15 minute bus ride to the studio.

Guests can also drive themselves to the studio tour lot. Below is a map but travel time is going to depend on where your starting point is.

Ticket Cost & Hours

Tickets for the Harry Potter Studio Tour London start at $68.00 USD. The tickets are timed based and you will need to make reservations early.

There are also options to book a Studio tour and bus transfer from London , this may be a better option for you to not have to worry about taking the London tube.

Tip for Tickets: Book your date as soon as you can. You also want to book the earliest time if you can get there. Less crowds make it much easier to tour. (More on that later in my review.)

What to Bring

You don’t need to bring much to the tour. There are indoor and outdoor areas so dress for the weather.

Wear comfortable shoes. The tour takes at least 2 hours to explore. Time will depend on how long you take for each area, dining, and crowd levels. We visited for around 3 hours.

You may want to bring a portable charger if you plan on taking a lot of video and photos. Guests are also allowed to bring their own food and drinks to be consumed at specified spots along the tour.

Where to Stay

If you are not staying in London you may want to book a hotel nearby. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour offers hotel and ticket packages .

The Tour Experience

The tour has you visiting different rooms and areas about parts of the film. The map below gives you an idea of what to expect.

Each area has a specific theme to it and you can spend as little or as much time as you would like.

The Great Hall

Guests start at the Tour Entrance that has movie posters, scenes from the movie, and scripts along the wall.

They then watch a short film followed by guides opening the doors to The Great Hall to begin your self-guided tour.

The Great Hall has costumes from the film as well as the sorting hat. There are lots of opportunities to take pictures.

Interior Sets

After guests leave the Great Hall you will go to an interior sets room that has so much to see.

We saw The Mirror of Erised, the Chamber of Secrets door, costumes from the film, and a few interactive elements.

This area of the tour is very crowded and vast. It does not follow a straight path so be sure to take your time to see everything you want to see.

The Forbidden Forest

Next up is the Forbidden Forest which is a dark open path. There are spider props and it may be a little scary for young children.

It is easy to get through and most kids will be fine.

Platform 9 3/4

Next up on the tour is the Hogwarts Express. There was a long line to get on this, so we skipped it, but we did get our picture taken going through the Platform.

We liked this area but felt it was comparable to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando, so we didn’t mind skipping things.

If you have never been to Universal’s Harry Potter areas this is really cool and you should take the time to explore more than we did.

Backlot Cafe

The Backlot Cafe is the half-way point of the studio tour. It has a small counter service food option.

They offer breakfast and lunch options as well as Butterbeer. Choices include hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and fries. Menu can be found here .

The food is fine. It is not good or bad. I enjoy the Butterbeer and the souvenir mug guests can keep.

The lines for food were ridiculous. I do not know if that was specific to our visit or if it is always long at lunchtime. It took at least 20 minutes to order and get food. The line moved slow.

There was plenty of seating in the cafe and it was nice to enjoy our lunch without feeling rushed. We also had a place to refill our water bottles and use the restrooms.

The Backlot

The Backlot is next and I think this is where my favorite areas of the tour started. The first half if props and things but these areas were a bit immersive.

The Knight Bus, Harry’s House and the Greenhouse can all be found in this outdoor space. The kids, and I all enjoyed checking on the baby Mandrakes, yes they do scream!

Gringotts Bank

After walking through the special effects area guests will walk through a life-like Gringotts Bank, with working Goblins. This area is very accurate to the movies, be sure to take pictures!

After you walk through the bank you will enter the vaults and have opportunity to take photos with treasures. Then you will come close to a dragon as you exit the area.

There is a short little dragon projection show that is about 30 seconds long and runs continuously. If it is crowded when you enter wait for the next round to start and get a front row spot.

Diagon Alley

Diagon Alley is the last large room you will walk through and it does look exactly like Diagon Alley from the movies.

The model room is the last area to walk around and guests walk the path around a large model of Hogwarts. This gives you a birds-eye view of the scope of the castle.

Shops and Exit

Every attraction ends in the gift shop and The Making of Harry Potter is no different. You can pick up wands and other Harry Potter themed souvenirs after your visit.

Once finished with your tour make your way back to the bus stop. This will take you to the train station to start your journey home.

Is Harry Potter Studio Tour Worth It?

It is always difficult to tell someone if something is worth it for them but what would a review of Harry Potter Studio Tour London be without my personal opinion.

We were not blown away by it. It was really cool and fun to see some of the exhibits but it felt similar to what we have seen at Universal.

I will say we visited on a really busy day. We didn’t enter the tour until around 2:00pm and I think that was a big mistake.

The crowds were big and it made it difficult to spend time to see everything without feeling rushed.

If you visit book a morning time. On our visit morning times were sold out by the time I got to purchasing admission.

Harry Potter fans do not want to miss this! If you are not a Harry Potter fan it might not be worth the time to travel outside London to see this.

Overall I am glad we went. There were areas we really enjoyed, like the Backlot area. I think one visit is enough for us but I am glad we included it on our trip to London.

Harry Potter fans disappointed by no ‘Back To Hogwarts’ celebrations – even though they were told to stay away

The annual event normally happens every year

Harry Potter fans

Harry Potter were left disappointed yesterday (September 1) when an annual announcement at London King’s Cross railway station failed to materialise despite being told it was cancelled.

People gathered hoping to hear a message on the public address system that the fictional Hogwarts Express would depart from platform 9 ¾ at 11am.

The Back To Hogwarts tradition, which celebrates the start of each academic year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry every September 1, also previously saw the train service being displayed on departure boards, with hundreds of fans attending last year’s event.

Warner Bros , which runs a Potter shop at King’s Cross and owns the franchise, last week “strongly discouraged” fans from showing up and said this year’s theatrics were cancelled.

‘Harry Potter’ fans left disappointed after the annual Hogwarts announcement at King’s Cross Station in London didn’t go ahead. Its cancelation this year had previously been announced and fans were “strongly discouraged” from gathering at the station. pic.twitter.com/mzga8clcd9 — Pop Crave (@PopCrave) September 2, 2024

It said (via The Guardian ): “Come 1st September, fans are strongly discouraged from travelling to King’s Cross as there will be no event, departure board or countdown at the station.

“Instead, everyone is invited to tune in and join proud Hufflepuff and king of the jungle, Sam Thompson, in a specially recorded online programme made in celebration of back to Hogwarts.”

Recommended

Despite that, many still turned up at the station and boos rang out after the usual tannoy address and departure board listing failed to materialise.

No reason was given for the cancellation of the King’s Cross event and it is unclear whether it will be back next year.

Meanwhile, one of the child actors from the Harry Potter films recently revealed that the young extras on set were only paid £2.91 per hour .
