A Look Inside Of HGTV's Gorgeous 2022 Smart Home

HGTV Dream Home 2022

HGTV has revealed this year's Smart Home 2022 in Wilmington, Delaware, designed by Tiffany Brooks. The two-story modern cottage is over 3,000 square feet with three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and a two-car garage. A wrap-around porch greets visitors and offers a cozy swing at the front of the home, while the backyard oasis makes sure they don't want to leave. It includes a pergola, fire pit, walk-in pool, and an outdoor shower. Brooks said she wanted the home's design to match its location, nestled just off the banks of Cape Fear river, per Spectrum News 1 . Her color scheme includes natural coastal colors such as soft blues, sandy browns, and olive greens.

The "smart" aspect of the home is in the design features which make everyday life more comfortable and more exciting, whether it's from using a touch screen toaster, smart mirrors integrated with the internet, or a keyless entry for deliveries all controlled by the homeowner's voice. The winner of the giveaway will receive the fully furnished home, a 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300, and $100,000, a prize package valued at over $1.2 million.

State of the art kitchen with tons of storage

As you enter the home, just off the foyer is the stairway to the second floor, as well as a large home office with French doors. An entry from the two-car garage leads right into the mudroom, which also serves as the laundry room. The main living space is an open area that combines a living room, dining nook, and a state-of-the-art kitchen , per Tiffany Brown's HGTV video tour . The floor-to-ceiling beadboard cabinets are painted olive green with bronze hardware and offer an enormous amount of storage space. The gas cooktop is surrounded by white subway tile and features two stainless steel floating shelves. Tall cabinet doors to the right of the oven open to a hidden walk-in butler's pantry and a separate food pantry offering additional storage.

A large center island with a farmhouse sink, pendant lighting, and seating for four divides the cooking area from the dining nook. Built-in cushioned bench seating and additional cafe-style chairs can seat at least 10 people. So much of this home is about incorporating the outdoor space with skylights, solar tunnels, screened-in porches, and balconies. It's no surprise that the kitchen also opens to the outdoor grilling station on the back deck.

Architectural details enhance the open living room

Off the entry, you come into the living room portion of the open floor plan. The design includes a coffered ceiling and a fireplace flanked by built-in cabinets. The furniture includes a three-seat sofa, armchairs, side tables, coffee table, and ottomans. A mini-bar with a prep sink is on one of the sidewalls and is perfect for entertaining. Floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open up to a screened-in porch for more indoor/outdoor living, per HGTV .

While the master bedroom suite is on the first floor, there are two other bedrooms and a large family room with a vaulted ceiling on the second floor. Brooks said (5:50) that she furnished this playroom to be calming and to encourage play. Natural light fills the room from skylights and the glass sliding doors to the large covered deck, which offers amazing views of the backyard. To add to the indoor/outdoor feel, Brooks added four very real-looking sculptural trees in one corner, which she describes as the perfect place for kids to sit and read. She includes low lounging seating that can be configured for seating or for extra sleeping space.

Two upstairs bedrooms continue the neutral color paint scheme with creamy taupe colors and richer, warm browns. A wooden beaded chandelier, a cozy reading nook, and faux architectural detail near the ceiling add special details to one of the bedrooms. Both bedrooms share a full bathroom that includes a double-vanity and glassed tub/shower combination.

First floor masterbedroom suite

The first-floor master bedroom suite has restful coastal colors in sea green, cream, and sandy brown. A contemporary feel is brought in from modern-looking light fixtures, black-painted molding, and the lines of the linen-upholstered platform bed, says Brooks  (2:51). Floor-to-ceiling drapes span the wall behind the headboard. French doors open to a private deck overlooking the pool and backyard.  The luxurious master bathroom is wrapped in floor-to-ceiling marble-look tile. A multi-head shower system and a soaking tub are both in the same glass-enclosed space. Black and white tiles are added as contrast trim. A double vanity with smart mirrors, gold-trimmed lights, and faucets combines luxury and technology. The enormous walk-in closet has a cool, built-in sliding laundry hamper so you can add laundry from the closet and retrieve it in the laundry room.

The laundry room is conveniently entered through the garage, so it doubles as a mudroom. A large, built-in bed for your pets is recessed in the wall using space under the stairs! Outside the house, a separate entrance leads right into what the designer calls a "package delivery room" with keyless entry to give access for deliveries. This room allows food deliveries to be placed right in a refrigerator/freezer, and a dog-walker can even pick up your pet from this room when you're not home without having access to the rest of the house. This smart home can meet all of your needs with these features!

HGTV's 2024 Smart Home Spotlights A Design Trend That Lets In The Light

HGTV's Smart Home is an annual sweepstakes where entrants can win a brand new smart house, an electric car, and a $150,000 cash prize. Each year designers are tasked with creating an innovative home packed with helpful smart features, from smart mirrors that tell you the weather to mattresses that assess your body temperature and cool or warm you as needed. The state location and home design changes yearly. In 2024, it's in Atlanta, Georgia, and the home features a mid-century modern design . The house comes complete with a metal roof, angular ceilings, and a black and white color scheme that makes it feel contemporary despite the retro stylings. But one other detail helps cinch its mid-century inspiration while also highlighting a new design trend emerging in 2024: floor-to-ceiling windows.

There are two floor-to-ceiling windows that span two stories right next to the front door, illuminating the foyer and giving an outside peek to the staircase. Expansive windows have always been a part of midcentury design, and they were utilized as a clever way to erase the boundary between home and nature. Not only that, but glass also felt very modern, so having giant walls made the space feel futuristic and contemporary at the same time. And since HGTV's Smart is all about futuristic accents, incorporating these windows makes thematic sense as well. Here is a closer look at the up and coming design trend, and why floor-to-ceiling windows are worth the hype.

Floor-To-Ceiling Windows Are Coming Back In Style

Floor to ceiling windows are having a moment in 2024 due to a move towards more organic and earthy colors and styles. We began to embrace earthy decor trends in 2023  as a way to create more calm and serenity in our homes, and expansive windows help to reinforce that retreat-like vibe by bringing views of trees and other greenery into the home. When designing the 2024 Smart Home, that's the exact aesthetic the designers were trying to capture.

"This year's home is a sophisticated retreat where neutral, relaxed and airy spaces meet modern, high tech, sleek features," designer Tiffany Brooks, who has designed the last 10 HGTV Smart Homes, said in the official press release. The floor to ceiling windows tap into both of those aesthetics -- they're at the same time airy and modern.

According to window experts, these windows are having a moment in 2024 due to people embracing sustainability, eco-friendliness, and technology. As climate change continues to dominate headlines, people want to feel like they're closer to nature. There is a larger shift toward selecting energy-efficient glass with UV protection that naturally keeps the house cool or warm depending on the season, and the glass can now be fitted in recycled aluminum or wooden frames. As people are making more eco-conscious decisions, they want the panes to be bigger so they feel even closer to nature outside.

How To Know If These Windows Are Right For You

Are you considering getting floor-to-ceiling windows but aren't sure if this trend is right for you? There are a few things to consider to help make your choice. The first is if you have a beautiful view you want to highlight. For instance, does your house face the woods, mountains, or lake? If so, getting expansive windows will make that backdrop a permanent part of your home. If you don't, there are other reasons to do so. For example, they can be beneficial if you have a dark or small room. The large windows will flood the space with light and make it seem more expansive since it will drag your eye upwards. Another reason is to modernize your space. If the outside of your home feels outdated, adding large floor-to-ceiling windows will make it feel more contemporary and add major curb appeal.

However, you also have to account for your budget. On average, floor-to-ceiling windows cost between $1,000 to $1,600 per window, excluding installation. This price can increase to $5,000 per window if you choose a very large pane or require custom shapes, such as cathedral or angular designs. You will have to hire a contractor to cut out the framework for the windows in your walls, and they usually cost $38 to $40 per hour. This will accumulate to a hefty price tag, but it might be worth it if you want the HGTV-approved architectural boost to your property.

Saratov was home to both a Lutheran parish and a Roman Catholic parish which served the ethnic Germans living in this city.

CONGREGATIONS

St. Clement Catholic Church

St. John Lutheran Church

St. Mary Lutheran Church

The Lutheran parish in Saratov was officially organized in 1793, although Pastor Ahlbaum was active in the city before then.

The Pope established the Diocese of Tiraspol, headquartered in Saratov on 3 July 1848. During its existence, there were five bishops:

Ferdinand Helanus Kahn (1850-1864) Franz Xavier Zottmann  (1872-1888) Anton Johann Zerr  (1889-1902) Eduard von der Ropp (1902-1903) Joseph Aloysius Kessler  (1904-1930)

This diocese went inactive in 1930 with the resignation of Bishop Kessler and officially vacant in 1933 when he died. It was formally "surpressed" in 2002 when the new Diocese of St. Clement in Saratov was established.

The Catholic parishners of Saratov built a wooden church which was consecrated in 1805. This building was used until 1880 when a new brick building was erected. The architect was M. N. Grudistova, and the new building was consecrated to St. Clement (St. Klemens in German) when it was completed in 1881. Today the structure serves as a movie theatre called "Pioneer."

In the post-Soviet era, the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 2001 in Saratov. It is part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Ingria (ELCI). There is a chapel in Saratov, and the pastor serving there is Olav Panchu.

There were three frontier garrisons founded to protect merchant ships traveling on the Volga River: Saratov (1584), Samara (1586), and Tsaritsyn (1589). Over the next century, the settlements were rebuilt on first one side of the Volga and then the other following a series of natural disasters.  The 1670 peasant revolt led by Stepan Razin also thwarted development of these cities.

Saratov was the first point of arrival for the German colonists and the location of the Kontora (Office of Immigrant Oversite) following the establishment of the colonies in the 1760's. From its beginning as a provincial outpost, Saratov grew to become a prosperous city and served as the center of industry for the Volga German colonists.

Russians reduce presence of strategic aircraft at Engels base – satellite imagery

“New satellite imagery of Engels Air Base, located deep within Russia, from December 29 shows that repeated Ukrainian attempts to strike the air base, as well as the arrival of cold weather conditions, appears to have led to a significant reduction in activity. Only 11 bombers are present, down from 26 on Nov. 29,” the assessment said.

“Recent snowfall at Engels also betrays the inactivity of some aircraft. While five Tu-95 Bears are visibly de-iced and parked on cleared aprons and taxiways, four others remain covered in snow. The two remaining Tu-160 Blackjack bombers appear covered in snow as well, though at least one of them shows signs of having its apron cleared of snow possibly to provide safe access to the taxiways. No clear damage is observed following alleged Ukrainian attacks against the facility on Dec. 26 and 29, but between reducing aircraft presence and installing new protective barriers, it appears Russia is trying to mitigate the persistent threat against its bombers deployed to the base,” The Drive wrote.

The Russians have used both types of aircraft in the war against Ukraine, especially in recent months, when they intensified their attacks on the energy infrastructure. However, these six bombers may now be unserviceable or have technical problems.

At the same time, five more Tu-95 Bear bombers are regularly cleared of snow and stand on cleared platforms and taxiways.

An unknown drone crashed on the runway of the Engels-2 airbase in Russia’s Saratov Oblast on Dec. 5. Satellite images recorded damage to at least one Tu-95 bomber.

On the same day, a gas tanker exploded at the airfield near Ryazan. The Russian Ministry of Defense said that as a result of the incidents, three Russian soldiers were killed and four more were injured.

A new powerful explosion occurred in Engels at the same military airfield on the night of Dec. 26. According to Ukrainian intelligence, more than three Russians died as a result.

Yuriy Ihnat, Air Force Command spokesperson, called the Dec. 26 explosions “the consequences of Russian aggression.” He also reported that in connection with the incidents, Russia has redeployed its strategic aviation.
