Sapporo 15°

North capital backed by nature.

Sapporo (札幌) is the prefectural capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. As a popular winter resort destination, Japan’s fifth-largest city also offers a wealth of culture, art, and natural beauty, alongside its ski slopes, neon nightlife, and compelling food scene.

Sapporo is a modern city of 2 million people that remarkably sees copious amounts of snow—up to 5 meters—every winter; this makes it one of the top six snowiest cities in the world. Sapporo’s chilly appeal was cemented as the host of the 1972 Winter Olympics. Even now, every year, the annual Sapporo Snow Festival brings visitors in droves, hoping to witness the snow and ice sculptures that line the city’s streets.

Nevertheless, Sapporo is an ideal destination any time of year with its cool summers gaining favor to host the marathons at Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games (held in 2021). Summer also sees Sapporites head outdoors, with fireworks lighting up the skies and beer gardens in full flow. Sapporo is the proud home of Sapporo Beer, a world-famous beer first brewed in 1876. The beer pairs well with local food culture too, with miso ramen, fresh seafood including crab, and soup curry some of the standout options that define Sapporo’s food scene. Sapporo is said to be the culinary capital of Hokkaido, where all of the prefecture’s best foods are gathered.

In addition to its reputation as a winter resort, Sapporo excels across the board as a compelling tourism destination. Art and nature converge at many of the city’s outdoor attractions, with some stunning examples of Japanese culture and nature in harmony to be discovered, like the Tadao Ando-designed Hill of the Buddha at Makomanai.

Last but not least, Sapporo is also known as the ‘gateway to Hokkaido.’ New Chitose Airport provides the most convenient and fastest way to reach Hokkaido for most and is just 40 minutes from the city center. It’s also well-connected by bus and train, making it an ideal base from which to visit other regional destinations, like coastal Otaru further north.

Travelers heading to Sapporo may want to stay for several days, given the wealth of things to do, places to go and local dishes to eat.

Japan’s Northern Soul: 2- and 3-Day Itineraries for Sapporo

Sapporo is Japan’s newest city. Up until a little over 150 years ago, the northernmost island of the archipelago was not inhabited by the Japanese. It was still home to the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido. In fact, a mere seven people held up the Edo outpost called “Sapporo” back in those days.

That all changed with the modernization of Japan at the turn of the last century—and voila! Now we have a city of almost 2 million people. It’s neatly laid out on a grid, much like North American cities, which makes getting around really easy. So let’s take a look at where exploring Hokkaido’s capital can take you with this Sapporo sightseeing itinerary.

sapporo clock tower

Arrive in the morning after a 90-minute flight from Tokyo . The airport to the city is not exactly close, so see our guide on how to travel from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo . Once, you’ve arrived, drop off your luggage at your accommodation (see below for hotel recommendations).

Next, rent a bicycle to explore the city. There are rental stations conveniently located around most of the popular tourist spots, so pick one close to your hotel or get your bike at your first stop: the famous clock tower of Sapporo, which is within walking distance of Sapporo Station. Get this must-see photo op in the bag right away so you can feel like an accomplished traveler early on in your exploration.

  • Sapporo Clock Tower (Tokeidai)

summer at nakajima park in sapporo

From here, head north for a few hundred meters until you reach Nakajima Park. This surprisingly vast expanse of greenery in the middle of the city is famed in spring for its cherry blossoms and in autumn for koyo , the changing of leaves.

Top tip : Pick up a bento on the way here, and turn this exploration into a picnic lunch in the warmer months.

  • Nakajima Park

For those with boundless energy, make your way over to Mt. Moiwa. It’s one of the most celebrated night views in Japan, and getting here before dusk lets you soak up first the natural scenery, then, after nightfall, the glittering lights of Sapporo stretching all the way to the Sea of Japan.

Mount moiwa sapporo nightview

A ropeway will take care of most of the ascent for you. From there you can switch to a small cable car that covers the last stretch. The automated climb sets you back ¥ 1,700 for the round trip.

  • Mount Moiwa Ropeway

For those who want to save the cost of the ropeway or just enjoy a hike, there’s a not-so-well-advertised hiking path. Mt. Moiwa is 531 meters high and the trail is 2.9 kilometers long, so most people make it up in an hour max. But take your time and smell the flowers! The trail leads you through a beautiful forest, and small Buddhist statues called ogizo-san line the path (the numbers on them tell you how much farther you have to go).

Top tip : The second half of the path gets steeper and a bit rocky/potentially slippery after rain, so bring sturdy footwear, preferably proper hiking boots.

To find the trailhead, take a streetcar to South 14 West 15, which means getting off two stops before the ropeway station. From here, it’s a 20-minute walk to find the start of the path which is located behind a temple, but is clearly marked with a trail map at the start. The easiest way to find it is to punch in these GPS coordinates: 43.036617, 141.322055.

Time to go where the action is—Susukino is the Kabukicho -slash- Shibuya of Sapporo, all rolled into one. The area’s rather questionable establishments add to the overall buzzing atmosphere of blinking neon signs advertising an endless array of bars, clubs and restaurants.

miso ramen, sapporo itinerary

Don’t get distracted. Head straight for Ramen Alley and sample one of Sapporo’s signature dishes. The street is called Ganso Sapporo Ramen Yokocho in Japanese, and pretty much guarantees you a tasty and reasonably priced fix. The original Sapporo-style miso ramen was conceived here. A bowl will cost you under a ¥ 1,000 , depending on how elaborate you like your toppings to be. There are 17 shops to choose from.

  • Ganso Ramen Yokocho (Ramen Alley)

For those looking for some serious craft beer to rival that of Sapporo’s sister city Portland, Oregon, stop by Beer Bar North Island after dinner, also located in the Susukino district. Here, you can savor some unusual and excellent brews, including their coriander black beer. Prices start at ¥ 600 for a small glass.

  • Beer Bar North Island

Nijo Fish Market snow crabs

Rise and shine for the Nijo fish market that’s said to rival Tsukiji ! Though much smaller, Hokkaido is famous for its exceptionally tasty and high-quality seafood, owing to its cold waters that produce fatty, delicious fish. Sample some here or just enjoy checking out what is on display. (Check out our guide to eating sustainable seafood in Japan .)

seafood donburi

Added bonus : The seafood is not only described as the best quality throughout Japan, but it’s also cheaper on average than in Tokyo. A donburi (rice bowl dish with various toppings) with sea urchin and salmon roe would be the classic choice for a seafood breakfast. Winning on all fronts, and it’s only 9 am. Free admission.

  • Nijo Fish Market

Sapporo Art Park is basically a theme park for art lovers. It houses ateliers, studios, exhibitions, a museum and an outdoor sculpture park. It was conceived to celebrate the artistic expressions of Northern Japanese artists.

The admission to the park is free, but the sculpture park has a ¥ 700 entrance fee. The museum’s admission fee varies depending on the exhibition. Please note that during the winter months some of the facilities are closed, so check ahead.

  • Sapporo Art Park

If history is more your thing, don’t miss out on Pirka Kotan Ainu Cultural Promotion Center. It’s about an hour bus ride from the city center, but well worth the effort. The Ainu people are Hokkaido’s (and parts of Northern Honshu’s) indigenous inhabitants. The park is a great display of their culture and traditions, which were greatly diminished due to colonization. The center showcases a small Ainu village outside and exhibitions inside. Admission is ¥ 200 for adults.

On some days, there are also events, workshops and performances, so check their website before going.

The bus that takes you there continues further on to Jozankei Onsen, so make a day trip out of it and soak in the spa after. Take bus #7 or #8 for Jozankei Onsen from Odori Nishi 1-chome in the center. Get off at Koganeyu Onsen and walk for 5 minutes. Buses run about twice an hour.

  • Sapporo Pirka Kotan (Ainu Cultural Promotion Center)

hokkaido sapporo tour

It’s (probably) Saturday night, and even if not—you’re on vacation and Susukino never sleeps. Experiencing the Hokkaido equivalent of the Tokyo’s Kabukicho red light district and Shibuya clubs and bars all rolled into one is a must on your trip here. It’s up to you how much of the dirty underbelly you want to explore, but may we suggest you start your night with some Genghis Khan?

jingisukan

Yep, that’s right. Spelled jingisukan in Japanese, it’s one of Hokkaido’s most famed dishes and in essence a mutton version of yakiniku . Try Menyotei Gojo, located in the heart of Susukino. As it’s quite spacious, they usually have a table available. Dinner is around ¥ 2,500 per person.

  • Menyōtei Gojo Store

Appetite satisfied? Explore the bars and clubs of Susukino at your leisure.

Depending on the state and size of your hangover, decide to sleep in or head over to Saturdays Chocolate Factory Café. This modern and stylish space opened in 2015 and houses a Scandinavian-style café. Enjoy a sweet breakfast of chocolate drinks, whoopie pies, and other delicious creations or take a tour of the in-house bean-to-bar factory.

The shop sells well-designed and stylish chocolate bars that make great souvenirs. The café shouldn’t set you back more than ¥ 1,000 . It has just 16 seats so it can get a bit crowded on weekends.

  • Saturdays Chocolate Factory Café

Otaru day trip

You can finish your Sapporo adventures here or add a day trip to Otaru.

This port town on the Sea of Japan is famous for its beautiful canal that especially shines during the winter months—quite literally so during the Snow Light Path Festival when the canal is decorated with snow lanterns and small illuminated snow sculptures. Conveniently, it’s held each year at the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival .

The former warehouses lining the canal were repurposed and now house shops, galleries and restaurants and are worth checking out at any time of the year.

The picturesque town is a 45-minute train ride from Hokkaido Station with a JR express train leaving every 20 minutes or so.

Otaru day trip sapporo itinerary

Budget around 4–6 hours to get there, enjoy the scenery, have lunch and get back.

After your return, wrap up your Sapporo trip with either an evening flight back to Tokyo—90 minutes will get you into Haneda in a breeze—or head to your next Hokkaido destination (may we suggest Hakodate , the prefecture’s third largest city, or Niseko for some skiing ?

The onsen facilities are beautifully designed in a minimalist modern Japanese style that mixes wood with unfinished concrete. The spa is open 24 hours and there is free wifi in the property. The budget option

A good option for couples or small groups of friends is Hotel Mystays Sapporo Susukino . A modern, clean business hotel in the center with single, double and triple rooms. Guests get a special deal on a nearby spa too. Nights start from ¥ 4,300 .

For the first day, take the short trip to the Sapporo Beer Garden, where you can enjoy one of Hokkaido’s classic dishes—Genghis Khan. To get there, take the Loop-line bus (循環88), which runs every 30 minutes from the bus stop at the entrance to the Tokyu Department Store.

Genghis Khan is a local favorite consisting of mutton or lamb grilled on an iron skillet, then dipped into sauce served in a separate bowl. What’s more, it pairs perfectly with a refreshing glass of beer. If you have some time to spare, the museum next door is definitely worth a look too.

Day two Sapporo Teine ( : 6 to 8 hours)

  • Sapporo Teine is open for skiing and snowboarding from about mid-November to early May.
  • To get to Sapporo Teine, take a train from the JR Sapporo Station to Teine Station (about ten minutes on a rapid train), then a bus to the Olympia Zone (16 minutes) or the Highland Zone (28 minutes). Click here for detailed information.
  • The convenient Bus & Lift Pass Pack includes a round trip bus from Sapporo’s main hotels to the snow resort and a lift ticket. Reservations must be made online in advance.
  • Sapporo Teine offers one-day passes and various other lift tickets that’ll grant you access to the lifts and the gondola. Click here for price information.
  • For beginners, lessons are available in English. Reservations must be made online in advance. There’s also a park where you can enjoy various snow activities beyond skiing and snowboarding, including sledding and snow tubing.
  • The rental store stocks standard skis and snowboards as well as high performance gear to help you get the most out of a variety of trails. If you plan to rent gear, pre-book online to make the process as smooth as possible.

Of the six snow resorts within the Sapporo city limits, Sapporo Teine’s proximity to downtown make it a natural choice for skiers and snowboarders who also want to make the most of the exciting nightlife after hitting the slopes. A former Olympic venue, its wealth of options has something for everyone, from beginners and those who just want to play in the snow to experienced riders and skiers who can’t wait to carve up exceptional powder snow.

hokkaido sapporo tour

There are many ways to get to Sapporo Teine, but the BIGRUNS Teine Line bus that connects hotels in Sapporo City with the snow resort is probably the most convenient. There’s one bus a day, starting its rounds of the hotels at 8:00 am before arriving at Sapporo Teine at around 9:30 am. The bus back leaves Sapporo Teine at around 4:30 pm and takes one or two hours to get to the hotels in the city.

If you’d rather be more flexible with your schedule, you can take a train and a public bus or hop in a taxi.

Sapporo Teine has 15 trails spread out over two large zones: the Olympia Zone near the base of the resort and the Highland Zone near the peak. The Highland Zone is great for intermediate to advanced skiers and riders. During the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, this zone was the venue for four technical skiing events in the alpine skiing competition: men’s and women’s giant slalom, and men’s and women’s slalom.

Among all the thrilling trails in the Highland Zone, if you’re really up for a challenge you mustn’t miss KITAKABE (North Face). This tree run boasts a maximum incline of 36 degrees and playful moguls in deep powder—it’s one of the most difficult courses in all of Japan. If you’re looking to get deep into some untouched, pristine nature, then Sapporo Teine has you covered too, with sections of tree runs called the “Nature Area.” There’s also a gate at the top of the mountain where you can pop into the backcountry. However, be aware that this area is outside the resort boundary, so you enter at your own risk.

During the season from late December to early April, there’s a terrain park boasting various features including kickers, boxes and rails. It’s groomed by specialists, so you can always expect the jumps and jibs to be in top condition.

For those newer to winter sports, Olympia Zone boasts fun features including a beginner trail with an average incline of 13 degrees called SHIRAKABA Sun Shine, a Kid’s Park and more. Ski or snowboard lessons in English (advance reservations required) are perfect for those looking for some guidance on the slopes, while the exciting area set up for winter activities is ideal for those who’d prefer to play around in the snow without strapping anything onto your feet.

When your legs start getting a little wobbly, why not take a load off at one of two rest houses within the resort? The Highland Ski Center also has a restaurant and a premium lounge, where you can add a little luxury to your skiing and snowboarding experience for an additional fee.

hokkaido sapporo tour

Sapporo Teine also has you covered for food. You’ll find restaurants in both the Highland Zone and Olympia Zone. At the SKADI restaurant in the Highland Zone, the ramen made with Hokkaido wheat noodles and homemade soup is not to be missed.

From here, you’ll be treated to a sweeping view of Sapporo’s urban sprawl home to some two million people. On a clear day, you might even see the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range out on the horizon. Hokkaido is one of Japan's most underrated tour destinations, next to exciting Tokyo or historic Kyoto. But Japan's northern island offers travelers a unique appeal all its own through its magnificent wonders of nature, indigenous history and culture, fantastic local festivals, and fresh seafood. Hokkaido boasts different beauties in each season, whether its bright lavender flowers in summer or a winter snow festival; whether you taste the delights of Sapporo's Autumn Fest or the last cherry blossoms of springtime. We are confident you will find at least one itinerary among our selection with the charms of Hokkaido that appeal to you! Hokkaido is probably most synonymous with winter fun, and some of our itineraries are geared toward helping you make the most out of a winter vacation. All our tours start in Sapporo, and the Sapporo Snow Festival is arguably Japan's most famous winter festival, although the tour also includes the Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival, Ashikawa Winter Festival, and Sounkyo Ice Fall Festival. Hokkaido has many amusements that take advantage of the season, including picture-perfect places to photograph the rare birds of the island, such as the enchanting red-crowned crane in Kushiro, Steller's Sea Eagle at Lake Furen, and the Whooper Swan at Lake Kussharo. Our engaging winter itineraries also include engaging winter activities like Smelt Fishing at Lake Akan, and visiting a Kitakitsune Fox Farm at Kitami. As the weather gets warmer, Hokkaido shows of a vibrant array of floral beauties, including fields of lavender flowers in Furano and Biei, tall sunflowers in Hokuryu Town, and of course, Japan's last cherry blossoms of spring, finally reaching Hokkaido in early May. Hokkaido has plenty of attractions to enjoy at this time of the year. Take a nature cruise in Shiretoko where bears and foxes roam free, or pick fresh seasonal fruit on a farm by Lake Toya, and much, much more. When autumn finally arrives, travelers can enjoy the seasonal taste of Hokkaido at the Sapporo Autumn Fest - Hokkaido's largest food festival. The early autumn season is also a good time to experience natural beauties of places like Noboribetsu, Onuma Quasi- National Park, and the Utasai Beech Forest at Kuromatsunai. Travelers can enjoy the changing autumn colors and the Salmon Run of Shiraoi in mid October. We include experiences that allow our guests to explore the locations and culture unique to Hokkaido. Our Charms of Hokkaido tours travel all over the island, to popular destinations as well as off-the-beaten-path locations. Learn about the indigenous Ainu people at the Upopoy National Ainu Museum at Shiraoi. Stroll the canals in Otaru, then explore the port city's glass-blowing industry. Take an icebreaker cruise off the coast of Abashiri. Taste fresh crab and sample the local brew on a tour of the Asahi Beer Brewery in Hokkaido's capital city - Sapporo, a vibrant city full of entertaining amusements. We carefully plan our tours based on seasonal attractions with must see sites in every tour. What our customers say

4.9 stars based on 501 REVIEWS

It was a great tour and included everything we wanted to see during the 11 days of touring. The Tour Leader (Kim) and our Drive (Bamboo San) were outstanding.

Our tour was wonderful as was our tour guide and bus driver. Miharu was not only knowledgeable she also had a great sense of humor and made certain the group was comfortable and safe. She was amazing. The meal choices were excellent. I would definitely recommend this tour to others.

Guide was very informative and fun. Fast paced meant seeing more. Route was excellent.

Our guide, Miharu-San was outstanding! She told excellent stories, was entertaining and even comedic at times! Tour was well organized and covered a lot everyday. I believe everyone in our group was fulfilled and tired at the end of the day. All of the hotels (except in downtown Osaka...Hotel Eselreine...room was too small for three people!) were excellent. Only disappointment but due to weather was not being able to see Mt. Fuji.

It was well organized and the guides were knowledgable and informative. Some hotels were nicer than others .

A very scenic tour of the Northern Island of Hokkaido (JPN195269E)....Exceptional accommodations and seafood was very good. The itinerary was varied and extensive. The Tour Guide Hui Liang was superb and worked long hours to support our travel group. We had her previously on our Japan Classic Tour in March 2017.

Journey to the East, featuring Sapporo Snow Festival Tour

Journey to the East, featuring Sapporo Snow Festival

I traveled as a solo traveler to Eastern Hokkaido earlier this year. What an experience. I have been to many other parts of Japan but this is certainly something like no where else in Japan. Amazing bird watching. Beautiful cranes. Stunning lakes. Outstanding food throughout. It would not have been possible to see this part of Japan on my own. We traveled by private car for most of the journey (apart from taking the train from Sapporo across to Kusshiro). Our local guide was from the area which made the experience even better. My highlight on the trip was the onsen baths, spectacular scenery, and meeting with indigenous Ainu people. I had read lots about Japan's ancient people so to meet them in person was probably the biggest highlight. I would highly recommend this tour and going with Unique Japan Tours. They were amazing to travel with.

The guides were very friendly and good, just that the English speaking guests may have some problems fully understanding what was talking in some cases. Europamundo is good . We enjoyed the tour overall, get to meet so many guides in one tour. No excursions mean perfect and no tips to drivers and guides made the guests much comfortables...sometime we wonder what to give and who should get better at the end of the day. I love all the guides and the drivers were good.

What people love about sapporo tours.

Ray, our tour guide was fantastic. Everything was planned to perfection. He ensured all tour members were taken care of with multiple languages to deal with as well. A couple of notes. We were told to look for aTour-Radar/Europamundo sign on arrival in Tokyo for a car ride to the first hotel. After phone calls it was determined to have been a Green- Tomato sign were to look for. This caused another couple to wait nearly an hour. Also the hotel in Hokadate was a bit of a disappointment. All other accommodations were excellent. This was the first tour we have been on as we normally go out on our own. Because of Ray we would really consider doing this again. He deserves nothing but praise and a raise in his salary.
Great food, beautiful landscapes, wonderful onsen resorts.

SAPPORO ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

SAPPORO ON A BUDGET: Travel Guide & Itinerary

By continuing to read this article, you agree to double check with the authorities or other concerned entities for the latest updates.

The Japanese have a word for it – kogarashi . It means ‘leaf-wilting wind’, referring to the gust that blows the last leaves off the trees, announcing the arrival of winter. While locals who have to deal with the extreme cold dread the frost as much as the Starks do, tourists chase it. Of all the key Japanese cities, Sapporo has the longest winter, starting as early as October. And as someone who spent most of my life in the tropics, I find joy in saying, “Winter is coming.”

Many of us whose roots are planted near the equator once imagined ourselves in that snowglobe we shook dreamily when we were kids. Snow is a reward, something that we could only see if we work hard enough to afford it, after we had been burdened by life’s many responsibilities. While I’m aware that too much of it has a dark side, for the young, naive me, snow is not ice powder but fairy dust, the stuff that magical places are made of. So yes, Sapporo, and Hokkaido in general, is one of my most-loved destinations in Japan.

Our team has been here four times now, in an effort to keep this travel guide updated. It’s my second time. Just last year, I was in town to experience Sapporo Snow Festival. And boy, what difference a year makes! In between my visits, Kita Kita , a Filipino film set in Sapporo, became a blockbuster hit and introduced the city to more travelers. And then, Philippine Airlines launched direct flights, allowing them to reach Sapporo more easily. Last year, I did not meet a single Filipino traveler outside the airport. This year, I kept hearing Tagalog words everywhere: at the TV tower, at restaurants, inside cable cars. Even the guys from the Tourism Board told us they were happy that their tourism has grown tremendously over the past year.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

UNDERSTANDING SAPPORO CITY

The northernmost prefectural capital in Japan, Sapporo requires a bit more effort to reach. Yet, it is the country’s fifth biggest city by population, which has significantly grown only in the past decades. Sapporo is one of the youngest urban areas Japan.

According to tourism officials we talked to during our stay, before development began to take over in 1857, there were only 7 people living here. And because it was built not too long ago, the design of the city didn’t come about organically. It was measured and developed according to plan. The city’s blueprint is an almost perfect grid, with the Ekimae Avenue (north to south) and Odori Park (east to west) as the main axes. Much of the public infrastructures, like the subway system, were built in preparation for 1972 Winter Olympics.

Here are a few more facts you need to know:

  • Language : Japanese (Nihongo). English isn’t widely spoken, but it’s not difficult to get around. Menus, signs, and machines have English translations.
  • Currency : Japanese Yen (JPY, ¥). JPY 1000 is roughly USD 9, EUR 7.85, SGD 12.5, PHP 476 (as of December 2018).
  • Modes of payment : Cash is preferred. Some bigger establishments accept credit cards, but cash is still king in Sapporo (and Japan in general).
  • Electricity Info : 100V. Type A sockets. Plugs have two flat pins. Type B is sometimes used but not that common.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SAPPORO

Winter , of course. Although the weather isn’t always comfortable, much of what Sapporo has to offer is best enjoyed in the cold months. It gets 6m of snow a year, and the first of the season usually falls in October. By December, the entire city is already a winter wonderland, and temperatures continue to drop as the season progresses. Here are more reasons to consider visiting when it’s covered in white blanket. (Warning, though: It can get really cold, with average nighttime temperatures reaching as low as -8C.)

  • Sapporo Snow Festival , an annual week-long event held in early February, showcases giant ice and snow sculptures in many parts of the city, with the one in Odori Park getting the most attention. Last year alone, it attracted almost 2 million visitors.
  • Sapporo International Ski Marathon , a cross-country skiing marathon, starts here.
  • Sapporo White Illumination runs from mid-November to December.
  • Sapporo is a popular choice for skiing and other winter sports.

April is when it gets warmer and snow begins to melt. Have you been dreaming of cherry blossoms but you’re always unable to travel in March or April? Sapporo to the rescue. The first bloom of sakura happens much later in Sapporo than in other major cities, usually in early May.

Autumn is good, too, if you wish to see its landscapes get painted bright red and orange. The Sapporo Autumn Festival happens in September, but make sure to bring a cardigan. If you plan to visit in October, you will need a jacket.

HOW TO GET TO SAPPORO

Sapporo is served by two airports, the new Chitose Airport and the Okadama Airport . If you’re flying to Sapporo from overseas, there’s a big chance you’ll be using Chitose. However, international flights are limited to China, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Macau, Honolulu, Guam, Australia, and most recently the Philippines. Most journeys make a connection in Tokyo or another major city.

MANILA TO SAPPORO

Starting December 7, 2018, Philippine Airlines has started flying nonstop from Manila to Sapporo! Their introductory price for a round-trip ticket is USD 399, inclusive of baggage allowance, meals, and other surcharges. This is great for those who also value their time. Flying directly will cut short the total travel time and skip the layover at another airport, which will give you more time to actually enjoy the destination.

Philippine Airlines also uses a brand new Airbus A321neo for their Sapporo flights. I’ve tried this aircraft many times now. Expect wider legroom, quieter journey, and a big screen with a great selection of movies!

hokkaido sapporo tour

The fare is also not far from the fares of flights with stops. Given that every PAL booking also comes with meals, seat selection, and 50-lb baggage allowance (something you might need in winter), PAL offers the best value for money.

TOKYO TO SAPPORO by Plane

The flight from Tokyo to Sapporo usually takes 1 hour and 40 minutes. JetStar offers round-trip flights for less than USD 100 (PHP 5000).

hokkaido sapporo tour

TOKYO TO SAPPORO by Train

Taking the train to Sapporo from other major cities outside Hokkaido is both time-consuming and expensive, which is why I don’t recommend it unless you’re on a multi-city tour around Japan.

  • Take the Shinkansen Hayabusa to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station . Travel time: 4.5 hours. Reserved seat fee: ¥11,130 ($100, P5000).
  • Switch to Limited Express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station. Travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

The whole journey takes over 8 hours, not counting the layover time. The total fare for 2 legs is ¥14,140. That’s on top of the seat fees. So the whole journey would cost you around ¥26,820 ($240, P12,000). That’s just one way!

OSAKA TO SAPPORO by Plane

Flights from Osaka takes around 2 hours but usually costs just a tad higher.

hokkaido sapporo tour

OSAKA TO SAPPORO by Train

To get to Sapporo from Osaka, you will need to make a transfer in Tokyo.

  • From Shin-Osaka Station (not to be confused with Osaka Station), take the Shinkansen Nozomi to Tokyo Station . Travel time: 2 hours, 33 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥5700 ($51, P2550); Unreserved seat fee: ¥4870 ($44, P2180).
  • Switch to Limited Express Hokuto Line and alight at Sapporo Station . Travel time: 3 hours, 40 minutes. Reserved seat fee: ¥1550 ($14, P700); Unreserved seat ¥1290 ($11.5, P580).

Total travel time is 10.5 hours , excluding the layovers. The total fare from Osaka to Sapporo is ¥18,140. Add the seat fees and you’ll have to shell out around ¥36,520 ($326, P16,400).

See now why we advise against it? Flying is faster and much, much cheaper.

But if you’re visiting multiple cities, then you will get great savings if you just book a JR Pass. This makes sense if you want to explore not just one or two cities. For example, if your itinerary includes Osaka, Tokyo, and Sapporo in 7 days.

Also, riding the bullet train across the Japanese countryside is quite an experience too.

NEW CHITOSE AIRPORT TO SAPPORO CITY CENTER

  • From the New Chitose Airport, travel on foot to the New Chitose Airport Station.
  • Take the JR Rapid Airport Line headed for Otaru or Sapporo.
  • Get off at Sapporo Station.

Fare is ¥1070 ($9.6, P480). You may reserve a seat for ¥520 if you want, but you can simply hop on to the cars with unreserved seats (FREE).

Travel time: 37 minutes.

HOW TO GET AROUND SAPPORO

Jozankei Shrine

Thanks to grid design, it is easy to explore the city center of Sapporo even on foot. You can simply divide the map into four quadrants with the Ekimae Avenue (north to south) and Odori Park (east to west) as the main axes. Each block in the city measures 100 meters so it’s not difficult to keep track how far you are from where you came from. I thoroughly enjoyed walking around even in the cold, cold evenings. And if you’re walking along Odori, it’s literally a walk in the park!

For not-so-short distances, there’s always the subway. To make it even easier, go to Hyperdia.com on your web browser. Enter your origin and the station where you’re going. It will then display possible route options including how much the ride costs and transfers needed to get there. At the train station, you can double check the price. Just look at the route map, usually above the ticket machines. The map displays the price based on distance. Sometimes, the map is in Japanese characters only, which is why Hyperdia is useful. If you’re not familiar with Hyperdia, here’s our guide: How to Use Hyperdia .

JR Hokkaido Kitaca Card

hokkaido sapporo tour

The Kitaca Card is Hokkaido’s IC card. You can use this to skip purchasing tickets every time you use the the train or bus. It’s much like Tokyo’s PASMO or SUICA and Osaka’s ICOCA. You can also use it anywhere that accepts IC cards even outside Hokkaido.

You can buy a Kitaca card via Klook. It’s preloaded with ¥1500. You can pick it up at the airport or at Sapporo TV Tower, whichever is more convenient.

If you’re visiting multiple cities in Japan and you’re staying for at least 7 days, you can save A LOT OF MONEY by getting a Train Pass. Klook offers the cheapest JR Passes available. If you live in the Philippines, the pass will be delivered to you in 7 days.

Again, JR Pass is only ideal for those traveling from one city to another. If your itinerary involved only Sapporo or Otaru, you don’t need this. But if you’re also visiting other cities within or outside Hokkaido, this can mean great savings.

PLACES TO VISIT IN SAPPORO

Sapporo beer museum and beer garden.

Explore the Sapporo Beer Museum and learn barrels about the Japanese beer culture! There is no entrance fee, but a guided tour costs ¥500. Afterwards, you may sample the beers or have what locals call the Genghis Khan , a dish composed of grilled lamb meat and vegetables. Housed in the Kaitakushi-kan building, a Hokkaido heritage site, it fosters a fantastic atmosphere too!

Tip: Make this your last stop of the day. Otherwise, prepare a change of clothes because the smell of smoke will stick with you for the rest of the day.

Other Sapporo Tourist Spots

Here are more attractions in Sapporo. We’ll be creating a more detailed article about these places in a separate post, so stay tuned. To see what they look like, check out this video:

  • Historical Village of Hokkaido (aka Kaitaku no Mura), an open-air museum that showcases 60 Meiji- and Taisho-era buildings that were moved from different parts of the prefecture. Admission: ¥830.
  • Hokkaido Shrine , built in 1869 in honor of the three pioneering gods of Hokkaido. Admission: FREE.
  • Odori Park , at the heart of the city, offers a natural respite from the sprawling metropolis. It also hosts the Snow Festival in February. At the end of it stands the Sapporo Clock Tower.
  • Moerenuma Park , a great destination for snow activities like sledding and snowboarding in winter. It’s a beautifully manicured park for the rest of the year. Admission: FREE.
  • Shiroi Koibito Park , a recreational area that will remind you of your childhood dreams. The park is inspired by delicious sweets and confectionery. In winter, it’s best visited in the early evening when the illuminations are up. Just around the corner is Ishiya Chocolate Factory, where a guided tour will let you see how they make the famous Hokkaido white chocolate.
  • Jozankei , which is an hour drive from the city center. Famous for its hot springs (onsen) and shrine.
  • Sapporo Dome , where the biggest baseball and soccer (football) games are held. There’s also a small exhibit inside.
  • Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium , which was the site of the 90m jump competition at the 1972 Olympics. A double lift system takes passengers to a viewing deck atop, for a wonderful vista. Fee: ¥500

SAPPORO DAY TOURS

Aside from the city tours, we also listed down below some tours around Hokkaido. The links below will take you to Klook, where you will find information about the tour.

Sapporo City Tour

Sapporo Morning Bus Tour

We often advocate traveling DIY-style, but if for whatever reason you can’t do it on your own, you can also join a group or private tour of Sapporo. Joining a bus tour is convenient especially for those traveling with kids or more senior members of the family.

Klook offers two city tours: one in the morning and another in the afternoon. They have different stops and itineraries, although most make a stop at the Clock Tower and Government Building. The itinerary also varies depending on the date so always double check before making a booking.

Each booking already covers the bus fee and multilingual audio guides.

Otaru City Tour

Otaru Bay Story Tour

Otaru is one of the cities in Hokkaido that are easily accessible from Sapporo. It’s easy to reach Otaru on your own. At JR Sapporo Station, just hop into a train bound for Otaru and you’ll be there in less than 40 minutes. Fare: ¥640.

Otaru is most famous for its postcard-worthy canal. Most tourists go on a scenic boat cruise, riding down Otaru Canal and see the Western-style buildings that flank it. The city looks like it’s straight out of a steampunk anime. I was getting a lot of Fullmetal Alchemist feels while I walked around.

The city is also famous for its glass craftsmanship and music box industry! Hence, a visit to a glassware or musicbox store or museum is almost always part of the itinerary.

If you can’t do it DIY-style, Klook offers a day tour of Otaru from Sapporo Station Bus Terminal. The tour guide speaks Japanese, but there are multilingual audio guides available for English-speakers.

SAMPLE SAPPORO ITINERARY

Here’s a sample 5-day 4-night Sapporo and Otaru itinerary. This assumes you’re flying in and out via Philippine Airlines and that you’re staying close to JR Sapporo Station.

As always, make the necessary adjustments to match your preferences.

Day 1: ODORI PARK & MT. MOIWA

  • Arrival in Sapporo
  • Board train to Sapporo City Center, ¥1070
  • Walk to hotel, check in
  • Lunch, ¥1000
  • Take train + streetcar to Ropeway Iriguchi Station, ¥320
  • Take shuttle bus to ropeway station
  • Travel back to Sapporo Station, ¥320
  • Dinner at Ramen Shingen, ¥950

Day 2: SAPPORO CITY TOUR

  • Take train to Soen or Nijuyonken Station, ¥250
  • Check out Sapporo Central Wholesale Market
  • Kaisendon Early Lunch, ¥2000
  • Train back to Sapporo Station, ¥250
  • Walk to Sapporo Station Bus Terminal
  • Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium lift fare and museum fee, ¥1000
  • Drop off at Sapporo Station
  • Dinner, ¥1000

Day 3: SNOW FUN DAY

  • Take Toho Subway Line to Kanjodorihigashi Station, ¥250

  • Shopping near Sapporo Station
  • Miso Ramen Dinner at Shirakaba Sansou (inside Ramen Kyowakoku), ¥980

If visiting outside winter, you can still enjoy the park. You can bike around. Rates start at ¥200.

  • Sapporo Beer Museum, FREE
  • Dinner at Sapporo Beer Garden, ¥4212
  • Walk back to hotel

Day 5: DEPARTURE

  • Early check out
  • Train to New Chitose Airport Station, ¥1070

If you follow the above itinerary, prepare to shell out ¥28,000 (USD 252, SGD 345, EUR 220, PHP 13,400) , excluding airfare, accommodations and shopping budget. But we added a ¥2000+ allowance to cover miscellaneous expenses and anything that we might have missed.

If you’re able to book a dorm bed for only ¥2400 per night, the total cost of this itinerary falls at around ¥37,600 (USD 338, SGD 464, EUR 295, PHP 17,950) , excluding airfare.

Here are more ways to further reduce the cost:

  • Instead of joining a guided tour of the city, do it DIY-style. This will save you at most ¥2700.
  • Skip the Sapporo Beer Garden dinner. The biggest chunk of the food budget is spent on an all-you-can-eat dinner here (which costs ¥4200+). You can just visit the museum and eat elsewhere.
  • Food budget is around ¥1000 per meal. I have indicated some of my recommended food places in the itinerary. If you want to cut food expenses, you can opt to eat at cheaper restaurants or buy food from the supermarket. Onigiri (rice balls) sold at convenience stores can be quite filling too. But I still highly encourage you to eat out and try to experience local cuisine.

MORE TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

  • Snow can be dangerously slippery . A good sign that the snow is good to be stepped on is if it’s white and powdery. If it’s gray or blackish and looks compact because a lot of people have stepped on it, there’s a big chance they’re slippery. So be careful. You can also buy those anti-slip… uhm… things (I don’t know what they’re called, haha) that you can attach to your shoes, just not the metal ones. (The metal ones have to be removed when you go inside an establishment.)
  • Make time allowance for the traffic . Sapporo’s best attractions are so far apart, and while the subway is there, some can only be reached by bus or by car. If that’s the case, consider the time you’re gonna spend in traffic.
  • Japanese chocolates and biscuits are a bit cheaper at the New Chitose Airport than in Haneda or Narita . For example, Royce’s Nama Chocolate costs ¥720 per box in Chitose and ¥780 in Haneda. I know that’s not much, but savings are savings.
  • If you have low cold tolerance, purchase a heat pack from a convenience store and keep it near your body (inside your jacket). This will make your trip more comfortable.
  • Tipping is not common in Sapporo . To settle your bill, you are expected to approach the cashier on your way out. The cashier is usually stationed by the entrance/exit.
  • Many vending machines serve both cold and hot drinks . Most people are surprised to learn about the hot options. Really helpful when you’re out in the cold.
  • Japanese bills look alike (same color). What varies is the size of the bill. The ¥1000 and ¥10,000 can be confusing so be careful. However, the Japanese are highly UNLIKELY to take advantage. They will even be the first to tell you.
  • When using the escalator , keep left if you’re not moving.
  • Learn a few Japanese phrases. The most useful would be Sumimasen (Excuse me, sorry) and Arigatoo gozaimasu (Thank you).

Thank you, Rochelle! I hope our blog inspire more people to travel.

Very nice and comprehensive guide. Gracias.

Hi! is the train included in JR unli pass or it’s a different train?

The trains from Tokyo to Sapporo? Yep, covered.

Grace Sabado

Hi. Very useful guide, thanks for compiling info from your travels. Would you recommend the same itinerary for May or June travel? Our group plans to go around that time. Also, are there travel guides whom we can hire to help us around? Thank you!

Hi Grace, yes, except maybe the ski jump and Mt. Teine. Also try to visit a flower farm since you’ll be there in spring/summer. We didn’t get to see any coz they were covered in snow haha

jeffrey

hi! this is a very nice and detailed blog about hokkaido.. im trying to check for flights on china airlines, but cant seem to make it work, when i type manila as my origin city, sapporo won’t come out as a destination city. thanks!

Benes

Hi! Nice post very helpful since we’re also planning to visit Japan next year! We’re planning on doing Winter/Spring itinerary by going to Sapporo first then Tokyo. What would be the best dates to that? We initially plan on Feb 26 up until March 4. Hoping to get the best of both the winter wonderland in Sapporo and the cherry blossoms in Tokyo.

Hi Benes, okay sana if maexperience nyo ung snow festival in Sapporo, but it’s usually Feb Week 1, which is too far from Tokyo cherry blossoms na usually late March/early April.

So depende ano mas gusto nyo maexperience. For me though, mas maganda yung cherry blossoms than snow festival, so I would suggest na late March kayo mag-start,

Jaime

Hi! I’m planning a trip to Sapporo via plane only. I just wanted to know if I need to indicate both flights (Manila-Tokyo and Tokyo-Sapporo) in my Japan Visa application form? Or do I only put the international flight (Manila-Tokyo)? Thanks!

Hi Jaime, ako I just put the Manila-Tokyo flight number when I applied. Not sure if that’s the right thing to do, but that’s what I did. haha. Naapprove naman.

Thanks! Should I already be prepared for snow around late November? What are the chances of snowfall during my trip?

I dunno how long your stay is gonna be, but there is a good chance. Sapporo is said to have at least 10 snow days in November.

jeni

Hi! Thank you so much for this article. I think it’s the most helpful & complete i found so far. I’m planning to visit last week of November for just about 4-5 days so you. Think it’s best to go via plane?

Yep! Best by plane :)

Arnel A.

Hi! Thanks for another informative post. I have not seen you recommend going to Sapporo in July. How’s the weather there pag ganung time? We plan to hike Mt. Fuji kasi kaya July-Sep ang target dates namin.

Hi Arnel, I haven’t been to Sapporo in July because I dislike traveling in summer in general. haha. But according to climate websites, summer in Sapporo is mild and it doesn’t get too hot, so it should be fine.

Mharj

Hi:) i enjoyed reading your blog. Very informative. I just wanna ask if is it okay to travel DIY in sapporo? No travel agencies or anyone. Just wanna explore the city and some tourist spots you had in your blog. Just by train or bus. Thank you and God bless. Going there on february next year.

Hi Mharj! Yep, it’s possible to explore Sapporo DIY-style. :)

Thank you so much for the reply.

No problem!

crizel

what month did you go to sapporo?

late January – early February

darling

Hi, Can i still use my PASMO IC card in Sapporo?

Within Sapporo or Hokkaido, yes.

Philip Yam

Hello ..can you help me ? my wife and i are planning to go to japan for 11 days in february 2021 .. we are planning to visit sapporo for 4 days and spend overnight in shirakwa-go and the rest in tokyo …..we already have a RT to narita . is it cheaper to buy a 7 days JR pass and local plane ticket ( narita-sapporo-narita ) or should we buy a 14 day JR pass ? Thank you in advance.

Your itinerary would be like this, right?

Day 1 – Arrival in Narita/Tokyo > Sapporo Day 2 – Sapporo Day 3 – Sapporo Day 4 – Sapporo Day 5 – Sapporo > Shirakawago Day 6 – Shirakawago > Tokyo Day 7 – Tokyo Day 8 – Tokyo Day 9 – Tokyo Day 10 – Tokyo Day 11 – Departure

If so, you DON’T need the 14-DAY JR PASS at all.

Note that the closest major airports to Shirakawago are Nagoya and Komatsu, NOT Tokyo/Narita/Haneda.

If you’re OK with the travel time, you can use a 7-DAY JR PASS to cover Narita > Sapporo > Toyama/Takayama/Nagoya (jumpoff points to Shirakawa). No need for plane tickets.

If the long travel time is an issue, then no need for a JR Pass. Just book flights to cover Narita > Sapporo > Nagoya/Komatsu. Then, instead of a JR Pass, book city or regional passes instead.

Either way, the 14-Day JR Pass is out of the picture.

philip

Thank you Yoshke. your advice certainly sounds very logical ..ill also follow your sample itinerary in sapporo ..Thanks again

Oliver

Hi, thank you for your comprehensive travel guide, it help us a lot & enjoyed an exciting tour, live like a local in a foreign country and not a conventional tour packages.

We are planning to visit Osaka & Sapporo this coming January 02 – January 08, 2023 because its my kids(12y/o is the youngest) vacation, we are 8 in our group, what itinerary do you suggest coming from Manila.

Since its winter, can you please recommend a hostel wherein we can stay near the train station which is less expensive and comfortable with heater.

The First-Timer’s Winter Sapporo Travel Guide

Posted on Last updated: May 7, 2024

EDITOR’S NOTE: Please be advised that this Sapporo travel guide hasn’t been updated in 2024. Prices and travel guidelines may no longer be accurate so it’s important that you verify any information before proceeding.

There are many reasons to love Hokkaido. It’s Japan’s northernmost prefecture and one of its most beautiful.

We attended the 2017 Sapporo Snow Festival and remember it fondly. Every trip to Japan is memorable but that one trip was particularly special because it was a good mix of experiences, some of which we had never had before.

It was our first time riding a snowmobile and experiencing the magic of an onsen. We enjoyed miso ramen and Sapporo beer at its birthplace and tasted jingisukan for the very first time. It also rekindled our love for skiing, something we hadn’t done in over twenty years.

And let’s not forget about the festival itself. Held every year in the first week of February, it featured large and highly detailed sculptures made of snow or ice, some of the most impressive measuring over 10 meters tall (33 ft).

If you’re planning to visit Hokkaido in winter, to attend the Sapporo Snow Festival, then this updated winter travel guide will help you plan your trip.

Sapporo travel restrictions.

Because of the current global situation, Sapporo travel guidelines may change often. Our friends at Booking.com have created a website that includes detailed information on travel restrictions around the world.

Before planning a trip to Sapporo, be sure to check Booking.com for information on travel restrictions to Japan. If you do decide to visit Sapporo, then we highly recommend getting travel insurance with COVID coverage.

Depending on your passport, you may need a visa and other travel documents to be allowed entry into Japan. You can check iVisa.com to learn about the requirements and to apply for a visa (if necessary).

SAPPORO AT A GLANCE

Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s largest and northernmost prefecture. It’s Japan’s fifth largest city and the second snowiest city in the world, getting an average snowfall of about 4.85 meters (15.9 ft) a year.

Sapporo first garnered international attention when it became the first city in Asia to host the Winter Olympics in 1972. Today, it’s one of Japan’s most popular tourist destinations – famous for its miso ramen, Sapporo beer, and playing host to the Sapporo Snow Festival which draws in over 2 million tourists annually.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SAPPORO

Hokkaido is beautiful year-round and offers something different each season. There’s really no bad time to go but if it’s your first time visiting Sapporo, then you may want to go in winter or summer . This guide focuses on winter but I’ll talk briefly about the other seasons as well.

APR-JUN : Hokkaido is Japan’s northernmost prefecture so it’s cooler here than in the rest of the country. If you missed the cherry blossoms in warmer parts of Japan, then you can catch them in Sapporo or in others parts of Hokkaido in late April or early May.

JUL-AUG : Assuming you’ll be going beyond Sapporo, then summer is a great time to visit Hokkaido. Flowers are in full bloom, most notably lavender. Lavender has been cultivated in Hokkaido for more than half a century and the flower fields of Furano (about 2-3 hours from Sapporo) are one of the island’s biggest draws. They usually start blooming in late June and reach their peak around mid-July to early August. Lavender is the most popular but Hokkaido is also known for poppies, lilies, sunflowers, and salvias.

SEP-NOV : The island’s foliage makes autumn a wonderful time to visit Hokkaido. Throughout the island, leaves turn to brilliant hues of red, orange, and yellow. It lasts till around early November, but aim for October for peak fall colors and relatively mild temperatures.

DEC-MAR : Serious skiers and snowboarders are no strangers to Hokkaido’s snow which is said to be some of the best in the world. If you enjoy skiing, then winter is definitely the best time to go. Ski season in Hokkaido typically starts in mid-December and lasts till early April. If you’re interested in the Sapporo Snow Festival , then that happens around the first week of February every year.

We went in early February to attend the Sapporo Snow Festival. It was cold, but not nearly as cold as we thought it would be. In fact, we found early December in Seoul to be even colder. Nonetheless, be sure to pack a thick jacket, thermal underwear, a hat, gloves, and a scarf, especially if you plan on going skiing.

Climate: Annual Monthly Weather in Sapporo

To help you better understand the weather in Sapporo , I’ve included average temperature and annual rainfall/snowfall graphs below. Suggested months to visit are indicated in orange. Since the focus of this guide is on winter in Sapporo, then I’ve only highlighted February, the month of the Sapporo Snow Festival.

TRAVELING TO SAPPORO

Hokkaido is the northernmost prefecture of Japan and is separated from the main island of Honshu. Most travelers to Sapporo will probably be flying into New Chitose Airport (CTS). It’s the fastest and cheapest way to get there, though you can go via Shinkansen as well.

We flew to Chitose from Fukuoka via ANA. We wanted to explore Kyushu after Sapporo so our port of entry/exit was Fukuoka . You can check Skyscanner to find flights to Sapporo from wherever you are.

You can take the metro to get to your hotel in the downtown area. You can use hyperdia.com to plan your route. If you’re traveling in a group or have a lot of luggage and would prefer to arrange for a private transfer, then you can do so through Klook or Get Your Guide .

This takes longer and is more expensive but you can get to Sapporo by Shinkansen bullet train as well. The total travel time will be over 8 hours (not counting transit times) compared to just 1.5 hrs if you fly from Tokyo.

The only time I see this making sense is if you’re getting a JR Pass and doing a multi-city tour of Japan. This will give you unlimited use of all JR national trains in Japan, including Shinkansen bullet trains and the Narita Express. You can purchase a JR Pass in 7-, 14-, or 21-day variants from Klook or Japan Rail Pass .

WHERE TO EXCHANGE CURRENCY

The unit of currency in Japan is the Japanese Yen (JPY) .

Banks and post offices are the best places to exchange currency in Japan. Based on what I’ve read, people seem to prefer post offices because the transactions are faster.

I exchanged currency at a bank and the process did take some time. I had to fill a bunch of paperwork then wait for the transaction to complete. If you’re arriving in Sapporo via New Chitose Airport, then you can exchange a small amount there, just enough to get you into the city, then change the rest at a bank or post office.

Another option is to withdraw JPY from an ATM. The rates are competitive and can allegedly be even better at times. Just make sure you advise your bank that you’ll be using it abroad so you don’t run into any issues. In my experience, my ATM card works in some machines but not in others.

NOTE: Some ATM machines may ask if you’d like to proceed “with or without conversion”. Always choose WITHOUT conversion. Proceeding with conversion authorizes the foreign bank operating the ATM to do the conversions for you, usually at unfavorable rates. According to this article , the difference in rates can be as high as 10%.

BEST AREAS TO STAY IN SAPPORO

If you’re visiting Sapporo specifically for the snow festival , then the best place to stay is around Odori Park. It’s the main site of the festival and the most convenient place to be. However, the week of the snow festival is peak season in Sapporo and one of its priciest. Hotel room rates, especially around Odori Park, will be at their highest.

To help you understand where all these recommended areas are, I’ve created the color-coded map below. Click on the link for a live version of the map. (Please note that marked areas are approximations only)

BLUE – Odori GREEN – Susukino ORANGE – Nakajima Park PURPLE – Kita Ward

I’ll provide targeted links under each description but you can book accommodations in Sapporo through Booking.com or Agoda .

Sapporo area map

The Sapporo Snow Festival is comprised of three sites, with the main site being at Odori Park. This is the best place to stay if you’re going to Sapporo for the festival. This is the main downtown area so there are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and cafes here.

If you can get a hotel room facing the park, then you’ll have a view of the snow sculptures from your room. You can search for a room around Odori Park on Booking.com .

Susukino is Sapporo’s main entertainment hub. It’s similar in feel to Odori during the day but it’s much livelier at night. It’s home to the festival’s second site featuring sculptures carved from blocks of ice.

If hotels around Odori Park are too expensive, then you may find a cheaper alternative in Susukino. It’s just one stop away from Odori on the metro and where you’ll find Ramen Yokocho, a narrow alleyway of about 15-20 ramen shops. You can search for hotels in Susukino on Booking.com .

  • Luxury: Randor Residence Susukino Suites
  • Midrange: Quintessa Hotel Sapporo Susukino
  • Budget: Daiwa Roynet Hotel Sapporo-Susukino

NAKAJIMA PARK

Nakajima Park is the area just south of Susukino. It quieter than Susukino and not too far away, making it a good choice for people wanting to be near the entertainment district without actually staying there. You can search for hotels in the Nakajima Park area on Booking.com .

Kita Ward is the area north of Sapporo Station. We stayed at an AirBnB on the border of Nishi and Kita Wards. This is a more residential area and a good choice for people wanting a quieter stay.

The metro made it easy enough to travel to and from downtown but personally, I would have preferred to stay closer to Odori or Susukino. I suggest staying here only if you can’t find a hotel room in the previous three areas. You can search for hotel rooms in Kita Ward on Booking.com .

THINGS TO DO IN SAPPORO

1. attend the sapporo snow festival.

The Sapporo Snow Festival is held on the first week of February, making it the ideal time to visit Sapporo in winter. You’ll find large snow and ice sculptures of popular characters at all three of the festival’s sites. Based on the character below, can you guess what year we attended the Sapporo Snow Festival?

As described, Sapporo is the second snowiest city in the world – getting an average snowfall of about 4.85 meters every year – making it the ideal environment for a snow festival. Check out my post on the Sapporo Snow Festival for more pictures and information.

Sapporo Snow Festival, Hokkaido, Japan

Estimated Time to Spend: About a full day for all three festival sites Entrance: FREE

2. Enjoy the View From Sapporo TV Tower

If you like lofty views, then you’ll probably want to climb up to the observation deck of Sapporo TV Tower. Located on the east end of Odori Park, it’s an iconic TV tower that gives you 360º views of Sapporo from over 90 meters (295 ft) above the ground.

You can purchase tickets to the observation deck at the gate or in advance through Klook .

Estimated Time to Spend: Around 30 mins – 1 hr Entrance: JPY 1,000

3. Taste Freshly Brewed Beer at the Sapporo Beer Museum

If you enjoy drinking beer as much as we do, then the Sapporo Beer Museum needs to be on your itinerary. Sapporo is one of the oldest beer brands in Japan and has been brewing in Hokkaido since 1877. There isn’t much to the museum but people come here mainly for the beer tasting and the all-you-can-eat lamb jingisukan which is one of Hokkaido’s signature dishes.

Check out my post on the Sapporo Beer Museum for more pictures and information.

Estimated Time to Spend: Around 2 hrs Entrance: FREE

4. Bathe in an Onsen

I didn’t understand people’s fascination with onsens, until I actually tried one. Simply put, bathing in a hot spring makes you feel AMAZING in winter. You feel so warm and relaxed you become practically impervious to the cold!

There are many onsens in and around Sapporo , but if you want the best experience, then you may want to go to Noboribetsu onsen town . It’s located about an hour and a half away by JR train.

Another option is Jozankei Onsen which you can visit from Sapporo on a day trip. Follow the link to purchase onsen day tour vouchers on Klook.

Onsen, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

5. Go on a Food Tour

We love going on food tours. It’s the best way to learn about local dishes and restaurants that aren’t as easy to find on Google. You can do all the research you want, but nothing can ever compare to local knowledge. We haven’t done any in Sapporo but we have gone on food tours in Tokyo and Kyoto .

If you’re interested in going on a food tour in Sapporo, then you can check out this Sapporo food and bar hopping tour on Magical Trip.

6. Shop at Don Quijote

Shopaholics rejoice! Shopping in Japan doesn’t have to be expensive, and Don Quijote is proof of that.

Like Daiso shops, Don Quijoute is a discount chain store with over 160 branches throughout Japan. And I’m not talking about rinky dink shops either. Many of their branches are like mini department stores with several stories of products ranging from groceries to electronics to clothing to household goods. Best of all? Everything is tax-free.

Visit the Don Quijote website to find the blue penguin nearest you.

DAY TRIPS FROM SAPPORO

1. attend the snow light path festival in otaru.

Otaru is a charming port city less than an hour from Sapporo by JR train. It’s proximity makes it an ideal day trip destination from Sapporo, especially in winter when it hosts its own festival called the Snow Light Path Festival.

Held at the same time as the Sapporo Snow Festival , you’ll find snow and ice lanterns lighting up the preserved canal area at night. Being a port town, Otaru is also home to some of Hokkaido’s best seafood, not to mention a wealth of pastry and dessert shops selling the most delicious dairy products.

Check out my post on the Snow Light Path Festival in Otaru for more pictures and information. Otaru is easy enough to visit on your own but if you’d like to go on a guided tour, then you can book one through Klook .

2. Visit Nikka Whisky Distillery

You don’t have to be a whisky drinker to know that Japan is home to some of the finest whiskies in the world.

If you are a whisky drinker, then you’ll be pleased to know that you can visit the Nikka Whisky Distillery on a day trip from Sapporo. Located in Yoichi, it’s accessible via the same metro line as Otaru so you can visit both places on the same day. The distillery is home to a museum and a restaurant where you can enjoy tastings and a tour.

3. Visit the Historical Village of Hokkaido

If you like living museums or enjoy taking pictures, then you’re going to love the Historical Village of Hokkaido. It’s an open-air museum boasting over 60 period structures spread out over 54 hectares. All the buildings at the village are from the Meiji and Taisho eras (mid-19th to early 20th century) of Japan, and were recreated to reflect what pioneer life in Hokkaido was like.

Check out my post on the Historical Village of Hokkaido for more pictures and information.

4. Spend the Day Skiing at Sapporo Teine

An avid skier I know told me that the best skiing he’s ever experienced is in Hokkaido. He’s skied everywhere but he loved it here so much that he now goes back every year.

Aside from the festival, this is what I was most excited about on this Sapporo trip. Serious skiers and snowboarders head out to Niseko but if you want to go skiing just for the day, then Teine is an excellent choice. Check out my post on skiing at Sapporo Teine for more pictures and information.

Teine is about an hour away from Sapporo and easily accessible by public transportation. If you prefer, you can arrange for a skiing experience at Teine through Klook .

Sapporo Teine, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

5. Ride a Snowmobile

Adventurous travelers will enjoy this. Neither Ren nor I had ever ridden a snowmobile before so we were excited to try something new. We did a fun 1-hr, 20-25 km snowmobile ride at Snowmobile Land which is about an hour away by bus from downtown Sapporo.

Check out my post on Snowmobile Land in Sapporo for more pictures and information. If riding a snowmobile sounds exciting to you, then you can purchase vouchers in advance through Klook .

Snowmobile Land, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

6. Explore Noboribetsu

Noboribetsu is Hokkaido’s most famous hot spring resort. One of its most distinctive features is Jigokudani or Hell’s Valley, a valley situated just above Noboribetsu Town known for its hot steam vents, sulfurous streams, and other volcanic-related activities.

Located about an hour and a half away from Sapporo, there’s enough to see and do in Noboribetsu to warrant an overnight stay. But if you’re pressed for time, then it’s possible to visit on a day trip . Just be sure that the tour you select starts in Sapporo.

JAPANESE FOOD GUIDE

Japanese is my absolute favorite cuisine in the world and a big reason why we love visiting this country. If you love Japanese food as much as we do, then you might want to check out our list of delicious dishes to eat in Japan . It includes popular dishes and Japanese desserts , as well as regional specialties by prefecture, including Hokkaido.

WHERE TO EAT IN SAPPORO

1. nemuro hanamaru.

Without a doubt, Nemuro Hanamaru is one of the most popular restaurants in Sapporo. Do an internet search and you’ll find this kaiten-zushi restaurant (conveyor belt sushi) on nearly every “best restaurant” list in Sapporo. All that attention does have its downsides as this was the longest we’ve ever had to wait at any restaurant – 2.5 hrs to be exact!

If you’re willing to wait, then you’ll be rewarded with awesome sushi at surprisingly affordable prices. Check out my post on Nemuro Hanamaru in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

Nemuro Hanamaru, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

2. Sapporo Beer Museum

Like Nemuro Hanamura, the restaurants at Sapporo Beer Museum are extremely popular. They’re known for their all-you-can-drink and all-you-can-eat jingisukan specials.

Jingisukan or “Genghis Khan” is a lamb yakiniku dish that you grill yourself on your table. It’s one of Hokkaido’s signature dishes and Sapporo Beer Museum is one of the most popular places to have it. In fact, it almost feels like a rite of passage for first-time visitors to the city.

There are many restaurant halls at the museum, all of which are huge. Even then, they do get packed so it’s important to make reservations in advance. You can ask your hotel for help or purchase vouchers in advance through Klook . Check out my post on Sapporo Beer Museum for more pictures and information.

Sapporo Beer Museum, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

Hokkaido is known for its seafood and these oysters are a good example of that. They’re available throughout the city but we enjoyed them here at this tiny sidewalk restaurant called Gotsubo . It’s a TripAdvisor favorite that serves grilled oysters on the half shell for just JPY 150 apiece.

If that isn’t enticing enough, the owner frequently throws in an extra oyster or two depending on how many your order. We enjoyed this place so much that we ate here twice in five days. Check out my post on Gotsubo in Sapporo for more pictures and information. We only had the oysters but they serve other types of seafood as well.

Gotsubo, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

4. ホルモン食堂 4条店

We enjoyed the jingisukan at Sapporo Beer Museum so much that we wanted to have it again, but this time over coals. We found this restaurant in Susukino with no formal English name (as far as I could tell).

Jingisukan is typically cooked over a convex metal skillet but they let us try it using this flat wire grill instead. As good as it was cooked over a gas stove, it’s even better imparted with that smokiness which you can only get from grilling with charcoal. Check out my post on ホルモン食堂 4条店 in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

ホルモン食堂 4条店, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

5. Shirakaba Sansou at Ramen Alley

Ramen Alley is literally an alley of ramen restaurants in Susukino. Many people online said it was touristy and to be avoided so I initially didn’t want to have Sapporo’s signature miso ramen here. However, this particular restaurant was recommended by locals so we decided to give it a shot. As expected, they were right.

Miso ramen is one of the four main types of Japanese ramen and is said to have been invented right here in Sapporo, so you have to try it. Check out my post on Shirakaba Sansou in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

Shirakaba Sansou, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

6. Hokkaido Kani Syougun

Japan’s love for crab is legendary, and Hokkaido is one of the best places in the country to have it. When it’s in season in winter, the city looks like it was invaded by crab. You’ll have several types to choose from like king crab, snow crab, hairy crab, and thorny crab.

We originally wanted to go to the popular Kani Honke restaurant but it was fully booked the two days we went. We couldn’t leave Sapporo without trying its famous crab so we went to Hokkaido Kani Syougun instead. We had two kinds here – the king and snow – both in a hot pot which seems to be the preferred way of enjoying crab for many Japanese.

Check out my post on Hokkaido Kani Syougun in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

Hokkaido Kani Syougun, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

7. Korombia

We were on the hunt for some good yakitori and Google led us to this izakaya in Susukino. Korombia has a wide selection of yakitori and kushiyaki, most of which were very good, but the most memorable dish of the night was the chicken sashimi.

I had been curious to try chicken sashimi ever since I first learned about it. Like most people, I was shocked and intrigued that you could actually eat chicken raw. Based on what I’ve read, you need a special license to serve raw chicken in Japan which is what makes this find all the more special. Check out my post on Korombia in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

Korombia, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan

8. Nijo Market

Nijo Market is a public market just a few minutes’ walk from Odori Park. You’ll find all kinds of fresh seafood there, most notably crab if you’re visiting in winter. Prices do seem a little higher here so you may just want to have a quick snack rather than a full meal. At the very least, you’ll want to take a stroll through the market as the seafood on display really is impressive.

Check out my post on Nijo Market in Sapporo for more pictures and information.

POINTS OF INTEREST IN SAPPORO

To make it easier for you to visualize where everything is, I’ve pinned most of the places recommended in this Sapporo travel guide on a map. Click on the link for a live version of the map.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN SAPPORO

The subway system in Sapporo, and Hokkaido in general, is very efficient. It’s comprised of local trains and JR trains. You can get pretty much anywhere you need to go using the train system. As long as you have a constant wifi connection and access to hyperdia.com , then you should have no problems getting around. Depending on your needs, there are a few transportation cards you can get in Sapporo.

One-Day Subway Pass

If you’ll be using the local subway a lot, then you may want to purchase a one-day ticket. It allows you unlimited rides on subway trains for the whole day and costs JPY 830 for adults and JPY 420 for children (ages 6-11). If you already have your itinerary mapped out, then you can use hyperdia.com to estimate how much you’ll be spending on subway transportation per day. In our case, it was only worth it on one day of our trip. You can purchase the one-day pass at any subway ticket-vending machine.

SAPICA / Kitaca IC Cards

SAPICA and Kitaca IC Cards are two types of stored-value cards that allow you to use Sapporo’s public transportation system without having to purchase single journey tickets each time. They can be used on subways, buses, and streetcars in the Sapporo area. In the case of the Kitaca card, you can use it anywhere that accepts IC cards, even outside Hokkaido. Both cost JPY 2,000 with an initial stored value of JPY 1,500.

Aside from a day trip to Otaru , we stayed in Sapporo the whole time but if you plan on exploring more of Hokkaido, then the Hokkaido Rail Pass may be worth it. It’s available only to non-Japanese and it allows you unlimited rides on all JR trains (except Shinkansen) and some JR buses within Hokkaido.

HOW MANY DAYS TO STAY / SAPPORO ITINERARY

This is a tough one. Though this guide was written specifically for Sapporo in winter, few people visit Hokkaido and stay only in Sapporo so the length of your visit really depends on how much of the island you want to see. Hokkaido is huge so you can realistically spend a few weeks here and experience just a fraction of it.

To keep it simple, if you’re planning on attending the snow festival and don’t intend to stray too far from Sapporo, then I’d say about 4 days is enough. Here’s a sample 4D/4N itinerary to help you plan your trip.

SAPPORO TRAVEL TIPS

1. plan your trip with sygic travel.

If you’re like us and enjoying planning every detail of your trip yourself, then Sygic Travel is for you. I’ve been using this free trip planning app for several years now. It helps me make an efficient itinerary by allowing me to pin all points of interest on a map then grouping them together by location. It’s available for free on iOS and Android .

2. Stay Connected

Having a constant wifi connection is a must these days. It’s almost as essential as packing a toothbrush. There are few free wifi zones in Japan so it becomes especially useful here. Having access to Hyperdia alone justifies the cost.

You can connect to the internet in Japan either through a sim card or a pocket wifi device. Personally, we prefer connecting via pocket wifi devices because it’s simpler, but it’s really up to you. Click on the links to purchase a 4G sim card or rent a pocket wifi device through Klook or Get Your Guide . Be sure to reserve it at least a week prior to your trip.

3. Bookmark Hyperdia or Get the App on your Mobile Device

You’ll be riding the subway a lot in Japan so this free commuter app will be very useful to you. It’ll help you decipher the often confusing metro system. In fact, I wouldn’t dare use the subway without it.

WEBSITE: hyperdia.com

4. Plan Your trip Early

The week of the snow festival is one of the busiest times of the year in Sapporo so it’s important that you plan your trip as early as possible.

In our case, I had booked most of our trip by September of the previous year. I got cheap international flights to Japan in July, and booked our domestic flights and accommodations in September. We went to Sapporo to attend the festival so I pretty much took care of everything as soon as I got confirmation on the festival dates. I suggest you do the same.

5. Make Reservations When Possible

Many of the restaurants in Sapporo (and the rest of Japan) are small so you’ll often find yourself waiting for a table, especially during the week of the festival when the city is flooded with tourists.

As mentioned earlier in this guide, we tried twice to eat at popular crab restaurant Kani Honke but they were fully booked on both days. If there are any specific restaurants you want to go to, then I suggest asking your hotel for help in making reservations.

6. Look For Sapporo Travel Deals

There are many websites that offer discount passes to tours and services. The websites I’ve used the most are Klook and Get Your Guide . You’ll often find interesting activities that you wouldn’t normally think of yourself so it’s definitely worth a look. In fact, that’s how I learned about Snowmobile Land .

7. Get Travel Insurance

To be honest, we don’t always get travel insurance. Some trips may not call for it as much but on this trip to Japan, it was a must because we were going skiing and snowmobile riding. It would have been a disaster to get hurt and hospitalized in Japan without any form of insurance.

We buy travel insurance from SafetyWing or Heymondo. They’re both popular travel insurance companies used by many long-term travelers. You can follow the links to get a free quote from SafetyWing or Heymondo . Get 5% off on Heymondo if you purchase a policy using our link.

8. Bring the Right Power Adapter

Japan has Type A or Type B electrical outlets so be sure to bring the right power adapters for your devices. Electrical voltage is 100V and the standard frequency is 50/60Hz.

9. Learn Basic Japanese Etiquette

Japan is a country of many unwritten rules. You’re a foreigner so you aren’t expected to know all of them, but it would be good to familiarize yourself with the basics. Check out this great overview on Japanese etiquette for travelers .

Hi Debbie, no I'm sorry but I don't. We've only gone skiing and snowmobiling in Sapporo, not snowhsoeing.

i love this very detailed guide for japan. but i do have to say, while certain regions in japan are very much cash based, meaning you can only pay in cash, the major cities of japan ALL ACCEPT credit cards. before your first trip to japan in 2018, we did SO much research prior to our trip. we literally researched for a good year prior to our April trip. every youtuber, every blog, every vlog said the same thing....bring cash. bring lots of cash. and it isn't like those places we visited online were old sites or old youtube videos. they were recent. they were made in the same year we did the research in. but when we arrived in japan, we were shocked at how wrong all of them were, how wrong you are. our trip to japan consisted of visiting Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and back to Tokyo. every city we hit, minus kyoto accepted credit cards. since kyoto is a very old fashioned city, yes they were mostly cash based. which was fine since all those vloggers told us to bring tons of cash. but tokyo? osaka? nara? i could easily use a credit card at the majority of their restaurants, especially their convenience stores like 711, lawsons and family mart. the one thing i will say, even in the big cities where cash was needed BUT it was to be expected were the shrines, the food stalls/street vendors. yes those places only accepted cash, but again, that made sense. same way that here in nyc, all those street vendors only accept cash. if you plan on visiting tons of shrines, yes bring cash. and since a good chunk of shrines have food stalls nearby, yes they will only accept cash. in those situations it made sense, but to do a blanket statement that all of japan is a cash based society and they have not adapted to the times is wrong to say and very misleading to tourists. i mean i guess i get why they say its all cash. it could be good overall if you only pay in cash wherever you shop. but that is true for most places, not just japan. so if your going to major cities for shopping and nice restaurants, your fine with your credit cards. if your going to japan to hit up small local shops in small cities or in the country side, yes please bring cash. OR even if you dont know how much to bring in cash, ANY 711 has ATM's that accepts foreign debit cards so you can pull out cash, but they have a minimum of like 10,000yen which should be around $100 US. you can't pull out say 50 dollars worth of yen. also, post offices are another good place where they accept foreign debit cards. so you have options for safe withdrawal of cash. so please. stop saying japan does not accept credit cards. because it's a flat lie. but yes, be prepared to use cash in smaller cities and in the countryside, even in large cities if your going to shrines and street food vendors/food stalls, they require cash payment only. hope this small tip helps future japan goers!

Thursday 9th of January 2020

Hi Shawn, thanks for sharing your experience. You're partly correct. More establishments do accept credit cards these days but this is a recent phenomenon with Japan aiming to become more of a cashless society. You can refer to THIS ARTICLE from the Japan Times to read up on it.

Toko Jinno: 'Eating fish is common in Japan, but the lives of fishers are not so well-known'

Photographer Toko Jinno is passionate about documenting the lives of Japan’s fishermen.

In Japanese, the word "senjō kameraman " typically translates to “battlefield cameraman,” but Toko Jinno , 35, uses another reading of the word senjō, “aboard a ship,” to describe her work as a photographer documenting the lives of Hokkaido’s fishermen.

2. Why did you choose Sapporo? I was interested in studying tourism and English. After graduation, I worked at New Chitose Airport. Sapporo is such a delightful city to live in.

3. What did you do there? I worked as ground staff for Japan Airlines helping customers and working the ticket counter. It was difficult work.

4. When did you become interested in photography? When I was a child, I remember being fascinated by the disposable camera we used when we went on trips. In high school, I joined the photography club at my high school.

5. Do you have a favorite photographer? Ken Domon, his portraits have such incredible impact. I used to think that since photos are taken through machines, people don't really have that much power in the final outcome. But looking at Domon’s photos, you realize how greatly it depends on who takes the photo. The essence of the person being photographed and who is shooting comes through.

Japan's fishing industry is experiencing severe labor shortages, a trend which has pushed many vessels to allow more women and immigrants aboard.

6. What kind of cameras do you prefer, film or digital? Digital, developing film is so expensive. I have an Olympus film camera now but I rarely use it. Currently, my main camera is a Nikon D610, a DSLR. I really enjoy the blue hues it has.

7. What sort of photos do you enjoy taking? When I was younger, I focused on nature and landscapes. Now, I really enjoy portraits. Recently, I’ve focused on documenting the fishing industry in east Hokkaido. I hope my style conveys the nature of such hard work.

8. How did fishers become your main subject? Originally, I was focused on local sightseeing spots for work but wanted to focus more on people and their stories.

At the time I was thinking of the image we share of fishermen, the image of older gruff fishermen with faces worn with wrinkles. To find them, I went to the fishing cooperatives and asked, “Is there anyone like this?” They let me come to the docks and join them. Despite being from Kushiro, that was my first time witnessing them work. I was scared, but, despite that fear, I felt inspired from the faces and stories of the people who made their living this way.

9. Have you learned much about the life of a fishers through your work? Yes, it’s all as difficult as you would expect. I think fishing for tuna is the most difficult, due to their size. Fishing when it’s cold and snowy is also dangerous because the chance of injury is so high.

10. Have you ever experienced bad weather aboard a boat? Three or four times snow fell, but generally boats heed the weather forecasts from the harbor and avoid traveling when it looks like weather or waves won’t co-operate. If the waves are too rough, the crews will be forced to delay going out to sea. I’ve never been out on the boats in a serious storm, but sudden bouts of rain are common. That’s always difficult for me as I have to worry about my camera.

11. Have you ever dropped your camera? Thankfully, I haven’t. I've slipped a few times without breaking my camera.

hokkaido sapporo tour

12. As a woman, what is it like to embed yourself in such a male-dominated industry? Ironically, the Shinto god of the sea is female. There is a long standing superstition of women on ships, that the sea goddess might be jealous and bring bad weather or hauls. Japan has always been like this, this idea isn’t isolated to only Japan. It's probably because there's a lot of physical work and danger involved, so they don't include women for safety reasons. But considering the current state of the fishing industry, the number of women is increasing due to the general downturn in people wanting to become fishermen. Smaller communities such as Konbumori just north of Kushiro have more female fishers as of late.

13. What's causing the increase? There's a labor shortage, so gradually, there are more people who are like, "Let's give those who want to do it a chance," you know? For example, there are many concerns about toilets, like when women need to go, it can be inconvenient. But to prepare for the future, they're building toilets for that purpose and accommodating them. There are also women who admire the idea of becoming fishers, as they have been able to see glimpses of fishing-life through social media. I know one woman who moved to a coastal area from Tokyo for that very reason. And you know, there's been a rise in people camping and an increase in those who admire nature. It's not all about office work. There are more people who simply want to work in nature.

14. What are your favorite natural scenes? The boats departing early in the morning ... and the sunrises on the ocean.

15. Does everyone on the boat get along? It’s a team effort. There are people who manage nets and traps or workers who manage the engines, as well as a captain who has to manage all of these workers. Everyone has to pitch in.

16. What is the most difficult role? When these ships depart, they need to decide where the most fish will be. I sense that there is more to the role than just looking at data. Knowledge of the behavior of fish and the conditions of the ocean is key. For example, water temperature might indicate a good location but something more visual like the location of birds and their activity may show where larger schools are. If the right fishing grounds are missed, then the whole crew might miss out on a good payday.

17. How large are the crews? For the larger ships that fish for tuna, 10 or so is normal. Smaller boats, like those gathering kelp, may just be two people.

Jinno says boats departing early in the morning and the sunrises on the ocean surface are among her favorite natural scenes.

18. How far do some of these vessels travel? Hokkaido is far enough north that larger vessels will head toward Alaska to fish.

19. What would you say is your mission aboard the vessels? As I mentioned earlier, the number of young people in the industry is decreasing, so foreign workers are helping to fill the shortage; many from Indonesia. There is also pollution in the waters that impacts the fish, which in turn hurts the fishermen. Some fishermen help to clean up, but everyone should pitch in, right? Eating fish is common in Japan, but the lives of fishers are not so well-known. So, a big part of what I want to convey is the behind-the-scenes of this important profession, which I hope will inspire and educate people to support the fishers.

20. What's the best life advice you ever received? I believe that if you take care of yourself, a path will open up for you.
