Cruises to Ireland and Scotland

Fascinating history and pastoral landscapes await.

On a cruise to Ireland and Scotland, take in the wonderfully contrasting scenery, from Ireland’s lush, rolling countryside to Scotland’s much starker beauty, where mountains slope down to serene lochs, inlets from the sea carved by ancient glaciers.

This corner of Europe is packed with culture and history, both ancient and more recent. In Scotland, you’ll come across grand, turreted castles and atmospheric ruins, as well as cosmopolitan cities including Glasgow and Edinburgh, each with world-class art galleries. In Ireland, you’ll find history shaped by everything from the Vikings to the golden age of shipbuilding. Don’t forget those famously cozy pubs—the perfect setting for sampling a pint of Guinness.

Itineraries

Featured ports of call, belfast, ireland.

Dynamic Belfast, once famed as a community divided by “The Troubles”, has reinvented itself as a thriving, modern city with a bustling waterfront, grand Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and a lively pub scene. Take a city tour to see the vivid street art on the Peace Wall, and explore the superb Titanic Belfast to learn about the ill-fated liner. Or head to the Giant’s Causeway, an expanse of 40,000 basalt columns on the wild Atlantic coast, created by an ancient volcanic eruption.

Glasgow, Scotland

As well as being a center of imposing Victorian architecture, the buzzing university city of Glasgow is rich in culture, from the priceless art of Kelvingrove to the archaeological treasures of the Burrell Collection. Edinburgh is just over an hour away, and you’re also close to serene Loch Lomond and the forested mountains of the Trossachs National Park. The shopping in Glasgow is superb, whether you’re in the market for tartan, Scottish whisky and craft gin, or your own set of bagpipes.

Cork (Cobh), Ireland

Immerse yourself in the medieval history and Gothic architecture of enchanting Cork. Visit romantic Blarney Castle, a 15th-century fortress with beautiful gardens, and kiss the legendary Blarney Stone to be granted the “gift of the gab”. Sample the famed Jameson Irish Whiskey, shop for exquisite Waterford Crystal, and get a taste of life in Victorian times on a tour of the imposing Muckross House, located deep in the verdant countryside.

MS Fridtjof Nansen, Antarctica. Photo: Espen Mills

The newest addition to our fleet will honor the heritage of her namesake – the Norwegian explorer, scientist, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Fridtjof Nansen. Known for his innovations in Arctic expeditions, Nansen led the first crossing of Greenland on cross-country skis. He is perhaps most famous for his attempt to reach the geographical North Pole during the Fram Expedition (1893-1896). Interestingly, after Nansen's Fram expedition, the ship was passed on to another great explorer who secretly planned an expedition to the South Pole - Roald Amundsen.

MS Maud, Norway. Photo: Oscar Farrera

MS Maud, previously MS Midnatsol, is named after one of the most famous polar vessels of all time, Roald Amundsen's 'Maud' from 1917. The original 'Maud' got her name from the first Queen of modern-day Norway. She also had her namesake in Hurtigruten Expedition’s 1925 flagship, DS Dronning Maud ('DS Queen Maud'). Today, MS Maud is equipped with advanced technology that makes her exceptionally well-suited for expedition cruises in Norway and the British Isles.

Kangerlussuaq-Greenland-HGR-116925-Photo_Karsten_Bidstrup.jpg

MS Spitsbergen is named after the crown jewel of Arctic Norway – the Svalbard archipelago and its biggest island, Spitsbergen. Hurtigruten has a long history of travelling to Spitsbergen, beginning in 1896 with the 'Sports Route'. After a complete reconstruction, MS Spitsbergen joined the Hurtigruten fleet in 2016. The ship features high technical standards as well as comfortable, modern public areas and cabins. She is modern and environmentally progressive and will undergo further improvements that will reduce emissions and fuel consumption even more. The new ship’s maneuverability and optimal size make her quite suitable for exploring polar waters.

Ocean Conservationists will be showcasing the incredible diversity of wildlife that can be spotted from the deck, helping everyone learn more about the marine environment around them whilst collecting vital data about whales, dolphins and porpoises to contribute to their protection. Whilst on board, the team will be delivering activities to help guests learn more about these amazing animals as well as the threats they face, including the Ambassador & ORCA pledge and the first ever cruise "Anti-whaling" campaign.

What to expect on this sailing...  This entire route provides an abundance of cetacean activity! From monitoring minke whales and fin whales through the Irish sea and resident populations of bottlenose dolphins around the British Isles. The North Sea then provides an excellent monitoring opportunity in a marine protected area important for harbour porpoises.

Often people think about whales and dolphins as being exotic animals seen on the other side of the world, but 25 species have actually be spotted in UK waters, and that’s something we love to celebrate! We have an incredible diversity of whales, dolphins and porpoises right on our doorstep, including “slinky” minke whales and the largest bottlenose dolphins in the world. We may even be lucky enough to spot orcas as they visit during the summer months! Not only are we excited for this itinerary to show guests these incredible animals first-hand, but during our time onboard we will also be collecting vital data that will help to keep them safe. This itinerary travels through a number of protected areas so the sightings we record will play a direct role in helping monitoring the whales and dolphins around our coast.

Here she is, our flagship of the fleet, our first lady of the sea: Ambience. Derived from the French word for ‘surrounding’, our ambition at Ambassador is to create the optimum atmosphere onboard; one that brings out the best in each of us. The perfect ambience.

With an average 1,400-guest capacity and careful configuration, she offers both a feeling of spaciousness and freedom, whilst retaining that sense of intimacy and camaraderie we each crave; it’s whatever makes you comfortable.

Entertainment-wise, she really will spoil you for choice. Let your hair down at the Observatory and bring out your finest ensembles for The Palladium. Whether you like it shaken or stirred, she has numerous bars to whet your whistle, including Raffles Bar, Botanical Lounge, SW19 and The Purple Turtle Pub.

Dining options are plentiful at our Buckingham restaurant or the Borough Market, with plentiful cuisine options, and for those wanting to soak in nature’s glory, we have our glorious Alfresco Grill. Wining and dining are more than fine at Saffron*, Sea & Grass* or our deluxe Chef’s Table*, where we offer a speciality gastronomic experience that’s not to be missed.

Put your best cards forward at Aces & Eights bridge and card room and the Ambassador Casino, or revive and renew at the gym and Wellness Centre. Other facilities include Kapoor’s, our onboard crafting studio, Brontë’s library, the shopping galleria, not to mention a swimming pool, two hot tubs and a large screen for outdoor movies. Sound good?

Join us on deck for an abundance of scenic cruising accompanied by commentary from our experts, where you'll witness the dramatic Cliffs of Moher rising out of the Atlantic, and once you have departed from Kirkwall, you will pass the red sandstone sea stacks of The Needle and the Old Man of Hoy, intriguingly shaped needles of rock that stand as high as the cliffs alongside them. You will also see the diverse landscapes of the Small Isles; the dramatic rock formations of Fingal’s Cave basalt columns on the uninhabited Island of Staffa and bonnet-shaped Bac Mòr, also known as Dutchman’s Cap. Each of our cruises has been carefully designed for you to get the very best out of your time on board; and now you can enhance your cruise to make it even more special.

Need Some Help?

Take a look at our faqs, what do i pack for a cruise.

The handy checklist below has been created to assist in making sure you remember all the important things to pack for your cruise.

Are there any visa requirements I need to be aware of?

Visa and health requirements can change at any time. It is your own responsibility to ensure that you check with a professionally qualified source and comply with such requirements. UK passport holders will need visas for certain Fred. Olsen cruise holidays and will advised at the time of booking. Your cruise booking information will also detail any requirements applicable to your holiday.

What's the difference between Freedom and Saver fares?

On certain sailings we offer two types of cruise fares; Freedom and Saver Fares.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat.

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Malahide Castle in Dublin, Ireland

Southampton, England, Waterfront quayside

ENAMOURED WITH ENGLAND

There's something for everyone in England – whether you prefer metropolitan meccas like London or the quiet countryside of the Cotswolds.

It's useful to know the London Underground escalator etiquette, which is to stand on the right so commuters can rush by on the left.

Tipping is not customary across the British Isles like it is elsewhere in Europe and in North America. Some restaurants do add a service charge to bills.

If driving in the British Isles, remember that Ireland's road signs are in kilometres, while Great Britain uses miles.

FOR FOODIES A CUISINE OF COMFORT

Each country in the British Isles is known for its signature pub grub and comfort food dishes. These hearty and predominantly meaty meals keep locals warm in a region known for its bracing weather.

Traditional Irish Stew for St. Patricks day

Stir the Pot

Made from slow-cooked meat – typically lamb or beef – and root vegetables such as potatoes, onions and carrots, a bowl of Irish stew with a side of crusty bread is only made better when washed down with a pint of Guinness.

Cote de Boeuf with Yorkshire Pudding

The Proof's in the Pudding

Typically served on Sundays, a traditional British roast usually includes roast beef, roast potatoes, a side of vegetables and Yorkshire pudding; a baked pudding often served with gravy. Head to a London pub to tuck into this English tradition.

British Fish and Chips

The O.G. Fish and Chips

Across the British Isles, you'll find thousands of restaurants and shops exclusively serving fish and chips, which first appeared in England in the 1860s. Flaky, tender white fish is deep-fried in a thin, crunchy layer of batter and served alongside thick-cut fried potatoes and 'mushy' peas, as the locals call them, which are blended with cream or occasionally ultra-rich bone marrow.

RSPB Puffin and Gannet Seabird Cruises 2024

*Tickets for our Puffin & Gannet Cruises will be live from 10am on Friday 16 February*

The towering cliffs at Bempton, part of Yorkshire's stunning heritage coast, come alive each year with almost half a million seabirds including the iconic Puffin and the UK's largest seabird the Gannet. Sailing from Bridlington Harbour with the RSPB aboard the famous MV Yorkshire Belle is a chance to get nose-to-beak with the stars of the show on an incredible wildlife adventure.

On a three hour journey of discovery passengers will sail to Bempton’s 400-foot chalk cliffs as clouds of seabirds swoop, soar and circle above and around the boat. RSPB volunteers are on hand to identify what's what and the on-board commentary gives a unique insight into the seabird spectacle. For nature lovers of all ages, this is the stuff that memories are made of.

The beautiful Yorkshire Belle is the last of the great pleasure cruisers.  She has indoor and outdoor seating, toilet facilities, and drinks and snacks are available from the bar.

Suitable for adults and families and, to make your experience more exclusive and comfortable, we will be sailing with fewer passengers on board than pre-Covid.

Early booking is essential as these cruises do sell out very quickly.

For any other enquiries please contact the RSPB cruise office on 01262 422211 or email [email protected]

Know before you go...

All tickets are  non-refundable  unless the skipper has to cancel due to rough sea conditions in which case refunds will automatically be given. Booking fees are non-refundable .

We are constantly checking the weather ahead of each cruise. A decision on whether the cruise will sail will be made the day before sailing by the Skipper of the Yorkshire Belle. We will contact you by email after 2pm with the final decision on sailing. PLEASE KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR EMAILS .

Alternatively, do ring our cruise line (01262 422211) after 5pm to hear the final decision on sailing.

Tickets can be  transferred  to a different date at least one week in advance within the same cruise group if tickets are still available.

Accessibility  - please check the Yorkshire Belle website  here   for assistance and boarding information as there are unfortunately restrictions based on mobility.

Bring suitable outdoor/waterproof clothing as it is often cold out at sea.

Sorry - no dogs (except accessible), tripods, telescopes or smoking on board.

Children aged 2 and under sail free, but please notify us on 01262 422211 so we can add them to our passenger list.

All guidelines to avoid recreational disturbance to wildlife will be respected throughout this cruise.

This amazing wildlife spectacle occurs in the North Sea so please think carefully before booking if you suffer from seasickness.

Why not check out our other seabird cruises?

Puffin & Gannet cruises  sail between May and July to spot nearly half a million seabirds that call Bempton Cliffs home.

Puffin & Diving Gannet cruises  sail towards the end of July to spot nearly half a million seabirds as well as treating passengers to the sight of Diving Gannets around the boat.

Diving Gannets cruises  sail on 3 dates in August to spot the wonderfully fluffy baby Gannets on the cliffs before treating passengers to the sight of Gannets diving around the boat.

Two  pelagic cruises  sail in September, searching for migrating seabirds as they fly south for the winter.
