The department of tourism, j&k is the main developmental, promotional and regulatory arm of the j&k government. tourism sector is the prime driver of the economy of jammu & kashmir. as such, the department of tourism has a significant role to prepare and project the ut of j&k as a preferred tourist destination in the country. the department has two provincial directorates one each at jammu and srinagar and tourist offices at all tourist resorts of the ut. in addition, there are 6 promotional offices outside the ut, one each at new delhi, mumbai, ahmadabad, hyderabad, chennai and kolkata.. besides there are 20 area specific tourism development authorities in ut each headed by a chief executive officer, actively involved in harnessing the tourism potential and creation of tourist infrastructure in the areas of their operation..

Apply In-Person : FOR REGIONAL LEVEL GUIDE :

• To register as a Tourist Guide, applicant has to visit the Jammu Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation.
• For Jammu Kashmir Tourism Development Corporation office contact click here: Jammu Kashmir Tourism Office
• Applicant has to visit the tourism office and obtain the application form from the respective officer.
• Now complete the form with necessary information and make sure you have all the documents in hand that are listed under the “Required Documents” section of this page.
• After filling the form, attach the documents mentioned in the required documents section below with the completed application form.
• Check the application form and then submit it to the respective officer in Tourism office address mentioned in the office locations & contacts section below.
• Now the authorities will verify your application and call for entrance test to get admission in the Guide training course.
• A merit list of all applicants who pass the entrance test would be prepared on the basis of aggregated marks.
• Then the applicant shall receive the call letter for counselling and documents verification, admission for available seats will be filled based on merit basis and eligibility criteria.
• Guide training course will be conducted to the admitted candidates through respective trainee.
• After the completion of training programme, all candidates would be evaluated through an examination consisting of a written test and viva voce.
• Applicant who pass in both written test and viva voce, respective officer issues course completion certificate along with the tourist guide license.

• To Register (License) as Tour Guide in Jammu and Kashmir, the applicant has to make the application online via Department of Tourism website – link
• The applicant has to login with their User ID and Password. if the applicant doesn’t have an account, the applicant has to click on “register now” and create an account.
• After logging in the applicant has to fill the registration form which is displayed on the screen.
• The applicant has to enter all the necessary details in the application form (Incomplete application forms are not accepted)
• Make sure that the applicant has to upload all the necessary documents that are mentioned in the “Required Documents” section of this page.
• All the documents mentioned in the form are mandatory to upload to get the approval.
• After completing, review the application and click submit.
• The applicant has to pay the annual registration fee of Rs 100.
• On successful completion, the applicant will receive an application number on their registered e-mail address and phone number. The application number can be used to further track the application status.

Eligibility [ edit ]

• Applicant must be at least 20 years of age during the selection process.
• Applicant should be the graduate from a recognized university or a holder of three year degree in Tourism / Hospitality.
• Applicant who did diploma in Archaeology from an Institute recognized by UGC /AIU /AICTE / any other state or central government body.
• Applicant must speak English fluently.

GENERAL – LINGUISTIC :

• Applicant must be able to speak any of the foreign language fluently. The fluency shall be tested at the time of written examination.
• Applicant must hold a doctorate in the field of Tourism (Indian History / Architecture / Culture/ Archaeology / Wildlife or other related fields)
• Fluency in English is mandatory

EXPERT – LINGUISTIC :

• Applicant should be able to read, write and speak any of the foreign language fluently.

• The applicants shall submit all original documents for verification at the time of counselling. Failure to produce original documents would lead to rejection of candidature.
• In case the candidate does not secure minimum passing marks in the written test or viva-voce after training, he would be given two opportunities to appear for supplementary examination and viva voce, at an interval of three months, each counted from the date of declaration of last result. If a candidate fails to pass in the supplementary chances, his candidature would be cancelled.

There are 4 categories of Regional Level Tourist Guides

• General – These guides can work as a regional level guide on a full time basis.
• General Linguistic – Ministry of Tourism will identify the guides with fluency in foreign languages.
• Expert Guides – This is a special category in the tourist guide sector. In this category, scholars or specialists in the fields of tourism will be placed.
• Expert Linguistic – In this category, scholars or specialists with fluency in foreign language will be placed.

One who holds the Tour guide license can be officially allotted as the state / central government tourist guide.
