Winona Ryder's Style Through the Years [PHOTOS]

Winona Ryder , born Winona Laura Horowitz on Oct. 29, 1971, gained fame in the late 1980s and 1990s with critically acclaimed performances in films such as “Lucas” (1986), “Beetlejuice” (1988), “Heathers” (1989), “Edward Scissorhands” (1990) and “Girl, Interrupted” (1999). She received two Oscar nominations during her career: in 1994 for “The Age of Innocence” and in 1995 for “Little Women.”

Ryder made a comeback in the mid-2000s with roles in “A Scanner Darkly” (2006) and “Black Swan” (2010). In 2016, she became Joyce Byers in the Netflix series “Stranger Things,” which has earned her multiple award nominations, including a Golden Globe.

Throughout the years, Ryder has shown her gothic-inspired style at high-profile events, almost always sporting monochromatic looks in somber shades. On red carpets, she has worn Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Armani looks. Ryder is also considered one of Marc Jacobs’ muses and has been featured in many of his brand’s campaigns.

Here, WWD takes a closer look at Winona Ryder’s style evolution.

Poppy was just 19 when she realised a $20,000 'mistake'. Now she's an Australian fashion juggernaut

By Suki Reid | 3 days ago

After years of watching her friends enjoying holidays overseas and saving her pennies, Poppy Lissiman got her big break.

Today, she's one of Australia's leading eyewear accessories designers, her creations worn by the likes of Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Bella Hadid, Kylie Jenner, Justin Beiber and Rita Ora to name a few.

Now hailed as a maverick of redefining statement accessories, Lissiman recalls her journey from losing $20,000 to becoming a rising fashion icon.

Poppy Lissiman

She tells 9honey Style she had the confidence to pursue her dream at an early age.

"I think I was 18 or 19 back in 2008, so the brand is really different from what it was when it started," she says.

Launching her first store, Lissiman sold ready-to-wear gowns – and it was a process as colourful as her designs.

"It was actually really hard; it was a nightmare and one of the hardest things I've ever done," she says.

One of those more testing moments was when Lissiman, then 19, lost $20,000 on a line of dresses that were manufactured unwearable due to a pattern grading error.

"I was able to salvage a couple of dollars worth of, like, bits from the dress like the zippers, but essentially lost 20 grand right there… That was a very humbling experience."

Poppy Lissiman

Thankfully, that didn't stop Lissiman, and in 2014, she decided to move her brand online.

The designer quickly realised her success was predominantly in the accessories space, so she boldly decided to leave ready-to-wear behind.

Navigating the world of e-commerce was understandably difficult at first. Still, the stars aligned, and Lissiman was gaining momentum rapidly.

The world of Instagram influencers was picking up, and Lissiman jumped on board and sent some of her work to social media stars.

It worked, and her online store kept growing. Just a few months later, she was on a plane heading to New York Fashion Week for her well-deserved "pinch-me" moment.

The designer stuffed a suitcase with all her accessories and headed to the big smoke.

"I was working two jobs at the time, and I just saved up enough money to go. I kind of thought 'f–k it'," she recalls.

"So I just hopped on a plane and literally pounded the pavement and gave away bags to bloggers and anyone I knew who would get snapped in street style photos during fashion week, and I got given a moment to go up to the Vogue offices for a meeting."

Lissiman says this was when all her hard work came to fruition.

For a daily dose of 9honey, subscribe to our newsletter here .

"Six years prior ... I never had any money to travel, and all my friends were going to Europe for the first time and doing all this cool stuff, but I just had no money because every cent I earned I put into the business," she says.

"That was the first time I was able to do that fun side of the business. I guess I'd worked so hard to get up to that point, so that was a real pinch-me moment."

Lissiman's designs had officially gone international, completely transforming her career's trajectory; the rest is history.

Now, she's one of Instagram's most prominent accessories designers and is collaborating with CASETiFY, another major e-commerce brand.

Lissiman has been using CASETiFY's phone cases for years, so when they were connected through mutual friends, the collaboration "happened organically".

The resulting phone cases and tech accessories, including laptop sleeves are an awe-inspiring mix of kaleidoscopic and psychedelic prints, which Lissiman says is "an extension of my personal aesthetic and the brand's aesthetic."

The collection's prints are heavily inspired by the iconic Hong Kong-based film In the Mood for Love, in which the main character wears some of the most beautifully printed cheongsams Lissiman has ever seen.

You can find the stunning collection here .

As Lissiman looks to the future for her brand and personal goals, one person comes to mind: Elton John.

"He's been a huge source of inspiration, just in terms of his style over the years and all the crazy eyewear he's ever worn," she says.

"If you want to look at something cool, just type in 'Elton John sunglasses walk in closet'' on Google."

Coaching-style Leadership’s Effectiveness in Cross-functional Collaboration

Through the lens of tuckman’s team development model.

Picture of hands clasping in team formation and words leadership coaching

By Dr. Sai Raghav

In the second installment of this blog series on coaching-style (CS) leadership, we will explore and highlight the efficacy of CS leadership in fostering cross-functional collaboration and extend this discussion by adding Bruce Tuckman’s five stages of team development . Part one reference link here .

Team development journey

The team development journey encompasses five stages, each accompanied by a distinct array of challenges and opportunities. Given their distinct qualities, CS leaders possess the ability to identify the team’s current stage of development and are adept at guiding the team towards a stage that aligns with their collaborative efforts. It is imperative that we assess the effectiveness of CS leadership across all five stages, where each is briefly outlined below.

Female worker talking to colleague

In the "Forming" stages

Due to the need for a well-defined vision, mission, and objectives (VMOs) at this stage, and considering the uncertainty and apprehension among team members, the CS leader assumes a crucial role in strategically assigning roles and responsibilities to foster members’ complete ownership of their work. A crucial aspect of CS leadership involves fostering the personal growth and professional development of team members (Karlsen & Berg, 2020). By employing active listening and maintaining open lines of communication, the CS leaders pay close attention to the strengths and weaknesses of each team member, while also gaining a deep understanding of their personal and professional objectives. The CS leaders align the roles and responsibilities with their respective goals. This approach serves the dual purpose of breaking the ice required for progressing to the next stage in the team development process, while also instilling team members with confidence and a sense of purpose. With CS leaders at the helm, team members are driven and empowered to accomplish the project goals.

A crucial aspect of CS leadership involves fostering the personal growth and professional development of team members

(Karlsen & Berg, 2020).

In the "Storming" stages

Lack of consensus-building behaviors and power struggles, stemming from differences in viewpoints and personal styles, are the main challenges faced during this stage. Failure to address the challenges at this stage could lead to potential project delays. CS leaders exhibit active listening skills and genuine interest in the concerns of their team members.

They prioritize collaborative goal setting and acknowledge the individuality of each team member, thereby adapting their coaching style to cultivate an environment of collaboration, trust, and support (Romão et al., 2022). The storming process can be expedited through CS leadership, which relies on a communication approach that emphasizes collaboration and sustainable growth, thereby ensuring long-term success.

In the "Norming" stages

The stage involves the establishment of team routines and the implementation of effective consensual decision-making efforts by the team members. The role of CS leadership is crucial during this phase, as momentum is being built and timely action is necessary. CS leaders serve as mentors, providing guidance, advice, and positive reinforcement to team members. Additionally, they harness their emotional intelligence and empathy to foster robust and long-lasting relationships within the team, which in turn play a pivotal role in problem-solving and effective decision-making (Susanto & Sawitri, 2022). Furthermore, the CS leaders’ profound grasp of their domain and their unwavering pursuit of knowledge empower them to deliver regular and balanced feedback, crucial for propelling the team to the next stage.

In the "Perorming" stages

Thanks to improved role clarity and commitment, the team is firing on all cylinders and delivering exceptional results. To guarantee a smooth sailing experience, the CS leaders make it a priority to regularly check in and monitor the ship’s progress. This diligent approach not only helps to minimize inconsistencies and inefficiencies, but also allows them to promptly address any issues that may arise in order to maintain optimal performance.

The prioritization of team performance at the desired level commonly results in leaders disregarding the professional goals of individual team members within the organization during this stage of team development. Conversely, CS leaders are diligent in considering and supporting the career objectives of their team members (Liu & Xiang, 2020). The CS leaders not only promote creative freedom and innovative solutions among team members, but they also create avenues for skill-building and career growth, often challenging individuals to think outside established norms.

In the "Adjourning" stages

As the vision, mission, and objectives (VMOs) of the project near completion, there is a noticeable slowdown in momentum, indicating that the team will soon be disbanded. During this stage, the CS leaders not only evaluate the team efforts and tie up loose ends but also place a heightened emphasis on rewards and recognition (Cui et al., 2022). Furthermore, the CS leaders conscientiously engage in reflection, evaluating their own performance and that of their team members, while meticulously documenting their observations to identify avenues for improvement in future comparable scenarios.

By employing open dialogue, the CS leaders, who are known for their goal-oriented mindset, ensure that team members do not lose sight of their personal and professional aspirations. In addition, they go the extra mile by offering supplementary resources, such as suggesting books to read, recommending trainings to attend, and guiding team members on the most beneficial pathways to pursue, all of which are provided at the conclusion of the project.

Professor lecturing to class

As we close this second and final installment, this blog has explored the vital role of coaching-style leadership in enhancing cross-functional collaboration through the lens of Bruce Tuckman’s five stages of team development. By recognizing and proactively addressing the specific hurdles and potential advantages presented at each stage, leaders who adopt a coaching style can effectively guide their teams towards greater productivity, enhanced morale, and successful project outcomes. These leaders achieve not only team success but also foster the personal and professional growth of team members through the use of strategic role assignments, active listening, collaborative goal-setting, and continuous support.

Travel Specialist

My passion for travel began over 25 years ago when I worked as a holiday rep in Europe before then returning to the UK to work in retail sales.

From there I moved in to tour operations with an Australia and New Zealand specialist where my love for Australia really started.

Enjoying several personal and FAM trips down under. Continuing my travel knowledge working with tour operators that specialised in the Middle East, Morocco, Europe and the Indian Ocean.

I have been lucky enough to travel to many incredible places around the world, alongside Australia my personal favourite have been The Maldives, Rio de Janeiro and Jordan. One of my greatest achievements was trekking the Sahara desert in Morocco for a local charity, watching the sunrise in the dunes was magical!

Being able to help people plan and experience “once in a lifetime” trips and special holidays is the best part of my job.

Journey in Style

With half a century of experience working in all aspects of the Travel Industry since 1967, founder Liz has finally seized the opportunity to realize a long-held ambition to dedicate herself to the development of a set of programs for the discerning traveller wishing to experience the eastern world.

Having managed her own Tour Operations since the 1980s specializing in Oman and later adding Africa and Arabia it comes as no surprise that Liz has found some hidden gems for her clients that she wishes to pass on the experience to.

Maykop – the view from above

Maykop (“the valley of apple trees” from the Adyghe language) is a city with a population of about 139 thousand people located in the south of European Russia, the capital of the Republic of Adygea .

The main urban development of Maykop was carried out in Soviet times and it was done quite systematically. The streets of the city for the most part are strictly perpendicular to each other, its entire center consists of identical city blocks. Photos by: Slava Stepanov .

Local people call it just “hearth”. It is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Caucasian War (1817-1864) and is a symbol of unity of all residents of the republic.
