• Mark Twain Travel Quotes

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the Earth all one’s lifetime.
To do something, say something, see something, before anybody else — these are the things that confer a pleasure compared with which other pleasures are tame and commonplace, other ecstasies cheap and trivial. Lifetimes of ecstasy crowded into a single moment.

It is the loveliest fleet of islands [ Hawaii ] that lies anchored in any ocean.
No alien land in all the world has any deep strong charm for me but that one [ Hawaii ], no other land could so longingly and so beseechingly haunt me, sleeping and waking, through half a lifetime, as that one has done. Other things leave me, but it abides; other things change, but it remains the same.   For me the balmy airs are always blowing, its summer seas flashing in the sun; the pulsing of its surfbeat is in my ear; I can see its garlanded crags, its leaping cascades, its plumy palms drowsing by the shore, its remote summits floating like islands above the cloud wrack; I can feel the spirit of its wildland solitudes, I can hear the splash of its brooks; in my nostrils still lives the breath of flowers that perished twenty years ago.

I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. — Henry Rollins
Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in an office or mowing your lawn. Climb that damn mountain. — Jack Kerouac
For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilization, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints. — Robert Louis Stevenson

We leave something of ourselves behind when we leave a place. We stay there, even though we go away. And there are things in us that we can find again only by going back there. — Pascal Mercier
Once in a while it really hits people that they don’t have to experience the world in the way they have been told to. — Alan Keightley
Every dreamer knows that it is entirely possible to be homesick for a place you’ve never been to, perhaps more homesick than for familiar ground. — Judith Thurman

Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends, but is played out over and over again in the quietest chambers. The mind can never break off from the journey. — Pat Conroy
No man is brave that has never walked a hundred miles. If you want to know the truth of who you are, walk until not a person knows your name. Travel is the great leveler, the great teacher, bitter as medicine, crueler than mirror-glass. A long stretch of road will teach you more about yourself than a hundred years of quiet. — Patrick Rothfuss
It is always sad to leave a place to which one knows one will never return. Such are the melancolies du voyage: perhaps they are one of the most rewarding things about traveling. — Gustave Flaubert

The wish to travel seems to me characteristically human: the desire to move, to satisfy your curiosity or ease your fears, to change the circumstances of your life, to be a stranger, to make a friend, to experience an exotic landscape, to risk the unknown. — Paul Theroux
Although I deeply love oceans, deserts and other wild landscapes, it is only mountains that beckon me with that sort of painful magnetic pull to walk deeper and deeper into their beauty. They keep me continuously wanting to know more, feel more, see more. — Victoria Erickson

• Travel With Friends Quotes

A journey is best measured in friends, rather than miles. — Tim Cahill
You will never be completely at home again, because part of your heart always will be elsewhere. That is the price you pay for the richness of loving and knowing people in more than one place. — Miriam Adeney
We are all travelers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend. — Robert Louis Stevenson

• Adventure Travel Quotes

Adventure is worthwhile in itself. — Amelia Earhart
If you think adventure is dangerous, try routine; it is lethal. — Paulo Coelho
Most of us abandoned the idea of a life full of adventure and travel sometime between puberty and our first job. Our dreams died under the dark weight of responsibility. Occasionally the old urge surfaces, and we label it with names that suggest psychological aberrations: the big chill, a midlife crisis. — Tim Cahill
Only by going alone in silence, without baggage, can one truly get into the heart of the wilderness. All other travel is mere dust and hotels and baggage and chatter. — John Muir
Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. — Edward Abbey

journey is worthwhile

Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless.   We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you control it. — John Steinbeck
What is that feeling when you’re driving away from people and they recede on the plain till you see their specks dispersing? – it’s the too-huge world vaulting us, and it’s good-bye. But we lean forward to the next crazy venture beneath the skies. — Jack Kerouac
A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are for. — J.A. Shedd

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There is almost no such thing as ready. There is only now. And you may as well do it now. Generally speaking, now is as good a time as any. — Hugh Laurie
Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the Earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white. — Mark Jenkins

journey is worthwhile

The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun. — Christopher McCandless
Adventure is allowing the unexpected to happen to you. Exploration is experiencing what you have not experienced before. How can there be any adventure, any exploration, if you let somebody else – above all, a travel bureau – arrange everything before-hand? — Richard Aldington
Be careful because Cambodia is the most dangerous place you will ever visit. You will fall in love with it, and eventually it will break your heart. — Joel Brinkley

To awaken quite alone in a strange town is one of the most pleasant sensations in the world. — Freya Stark
Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. — Unknown
I can’t think of anything that excites a greater sense of childlike wonder than to be in a country where you are ignorant of almost everything. Suddenly you are five years old again. You can’t read anything, you have only the most rudimentary sense of how things work, you can’t reliably cross a street without endangering your life. Your whole existence becomes a series of interesting guesses. — Bill Bryson
The true fruit of travel is perhaps the feeling of being nearly everywhere at home. — Freya Stark

journey is worthwhile

When you’ve managed to stumble directly into the heart of the unknown – either through the misdirection of others, or better yet, through your own creative ineptitude – there is no one there to hold your hand or tell you what to do. In those bad lost moments, in the times when we are advised not to panic, we own the unknown, and the world belongs to us. The child within has full reign. Few of us are ever so free. — Tim Cahill
No one realizes how beautiful it is to travel until he comes home and rests his head on his old, familiar pillow. — Lin Yutang
He travels the fastest who travels alone. — Rudyard Kipling

Travel can be one of the most rewarding forms of introspection. — Lawrence Durrell
When the traveler goes alone he gets acquainted with himself. — Liberty Hyde Bailey
The man who goes alone can start today; but he who travels with another must wait till that other is ready. — Henry David Thoreau

I think one travels more usefully when they travel alone, because they reflect more. — Thomas Jefferson
Loving life is easy when you are abroad. Where no one knows you and you hold your life in your hands all alone, you are more master of yourself than at any other time. — Hannah Arendt
Personally I like going places where I don’t speak the language, don’t know anybody, don’t know my way around and don’t have any delusions that I’m in control. Disoriented, even frightened, I feel alive, awake in ways I never am at home. — Michael Mewshaw

I can speak to my soul only when the two of us are off exploring deserts or cities or mountains or roads. — Paulo Coelho
Afoot and light-hearted I take to the open road. Healthy, free, the world before me. The long brown path before me leading me wherever I choose. — Walt Whitman

• Anthony Bourdain Travel Quotes

If you’re twenty-two, physically fit, hungry to learn and be better, I urge you to travel – as far and as widely as possible. Sleep on floors if you have to. Find out how other people live and eat and cook. Learn from them – wherever you go.
Travel changes you. As you move through this life and this world you change things slightly, you leave marks behind, however small. And in return, life — and travel — leaves marks on you. Most of the time, those marks — on your body or on your heart — are beautiful. Often, though, they hurt.
It’s an irritating reality that many places and events defy description. Angkor Wat and Machu Picchu , for instance, seem to demand silence, like a love affair you can never talk about.   For a while after, you fumble for words, trying vainly to assemble a private narrative, an explanation, a comfortable way to frame where you’ve been and what’s happened. In the end, you’re just happy you were there — with your eyes open — and lived to see it.

journey is worthwhile

Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.
I’m a big believer in winging it. I’m a big believer that you’re never going to find the perfect city travel experience or the perfect meal without a constant willingness to experience a bad one. Letting the happy accident happen is what a lot of vacation itineraries miss, I think, and I’m always trying to push people to allow those things to happen rather than stick to some rigid itinerary.
Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed popemobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds? … I know what I want. I want it all. I want to try everything once.

journey is worthwhile

It seems that the more places I see and experience, the bigger I realize the world to be. The more I become aware of, the more I realize how relatively little I know of it, how many places I have still to go, how much more there is to learn.   Maybe that’s enlightenment enough – to know that there is no final resting place of the mind, no moment of smug clarity. Perhaps wisdom, at least for me, means realizing how small I am, and unwise, and how far I have yet to go.
I think food, culture, people and landscape are all absolutely inseparable.
Food is everything we are. It’s an extension of nationalist feeling, ethnic feeling, your personal history, your province, your region, your tribe, your grandma. It’s inseparable from those from the get-go.
Southeast Asia has a real grip on me. From the very first time I went there, it was a fulfillment of my childhood fantasies of the way travel should be.

journey is worthwhile

I wanted adventures. I wanted to go up the Nung river to the heart of darkness in Cambodia . I wanted to ride out into a desert on camelback, sand and dunes in every direction, eat whole roasted lamb with my fingers. I wanted to kick snow off my boots in a Mafiya nightclub in Russia. I wanted to play with automatic weapons in Phnom Penh, recapture the past in a small oyster village in France, step into a seedy neon-lit pulqueria in rural Mexico. I wanted to run roadblocks in the middle of the night, blowing past angry militia with a handful of hurled Marlboro packs, experience fear, excitement, wonder.   I wanted kicks – the kind of melodramatic thrills and chills I’d yearned for since childhood, the kind of adventure I’d found as a little boy in the pages of my Tintin comic books. I wanted to see the world – and I wanted the world to be just like the movies.
At this point I think my body is like an old car. Another dent ain’t gonna make a whole lot of difference. At best it’s a reminder that you’re still alive and lucky as hell. Another tattoo, another thing you did, another place you’ve been.

journey is worthwhile

Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive, and moribund.
If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.
Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.

The Meaning Of Nothing Comes Easy

Nothing comes easy simply means that if you really want something, you should be prepared to go through hell to get it.

Value is inherently linked to difficulty. If you want something that’s valuable, you need something that’s incredibly hard to accomplish.

If everyone was walking around with ripped muscles and a six-pack, then you wouldn’t care about hitting the gym. If everyone drove a Ferrari, then you wouldn’t care about making enough money to buy one.

So if you have super ambitious goals, don’t make the mistake of just how much pain and struggle you’ll have to go through to achieve them.

Feeling down because you’ve experienced some failure? Thomas Edison tried 10,000 different experiments before perfecting the incandescent light bulb.

Feeling like the world is out to get you? Before his first book sold 8 million copies, Jack Canfield was rejected by 144 different publishers.

When you actually analyze the lives of successful people, you’ll realize why only 1-2% of people ever reach greatness. So the question you need to ask yourself is this — are you willing to pay the price?

Are you okay with failing repeatedly? Are you willing to struggle while other people stay comfortable? Are you willing to battle your fears over and over again?

If you’re not willing to pay that price, then that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with admitting that you don’t want to go through the suffering required for greatness.

But if you have a fire inside you that burns relentlessly, then you’ll have to accept that nothing worth having comes easy, and that life will constantly test your will to see how bad you want what you say you want.

Be prepared for the struggle, and let it mold you into the person you’ve always wanted to be.

Tips for identifying and writing a personal journey that matches your vision

Be you.  Whether you want to simply document your journey or share your experience with others to help inspire them, one of the things you should do is just be you. Be your authentic self. Write down all your personal experiences and true feelings. You are the only person on the planet with these distinct feelings and plans.

Don’t let fear hold you back.  It’s easy to get scared to put yourself out there and be judged not just by strangers but the people you know. But don’t let it stop you from writing your personal journey and doing what you think will help you. Why be bothered by strangers’ opinions? And why be bothered by your friends’ and family’s opinions? The fact is, most people are spending days thinking about their own problems and not you.

Go crazy.  Go overboard. Be extra. Do all the things you want to do to align your journey with your vision. You’re only here once. Don’t let other people stop you. This is your life, this is your journey, and this is your vision. Do what you want and be bold.

When Did Everything Become a ‘Journey’?

Changing our hair, getting divorced, taking spa vacations — they’re not just things we do; they’re “journeys.” The quest for better health is the greatest journey of all.

An illustration of the word "journey" done in a three dimensional typeface. The word is repeated and gets smaller in pink and green. At the end of the repetition is a butterfly.

By Lisa Miller

Drew Barrymore has been talking with Gayle King about her perimenopause “journey ,” and the soccer phenom Carli Lloyd has just divulged her fertility “journey .” By sharing her breast cancer story, Olivia Munn has said she hopes she will “help others find comfort, inspiration, and support on their own journey.” A recent interview with Anne Hathaway has been posted on Instagram with a headline highlighting her “ sobriety journey ,” and Kelly Clarkson has opened up about what Women’s Health calls her “ weight loss journey .” On TikTok, a zillion influencer-guides lead pilgrims on journeys through such ephemeral realms as faith, healing, grief, friendship, mastectomy, and therapy — often selling courses, supplements or eating plans as if they were talismans to help safeguard their path.

“Journey” has decisively taken its place in American speech. The word holds an upbeat utility these days, signaling struggle without darkness or detail, and expressing — in the broadest possible way — an individual’s experience of travails over time.

It’s often related to physical or mental health, but it can really be about anything: “Putting on your socks can be a journey of self-discovery,” said Beth Patton, who lives in Central Indiana and has relapsing polychondritis, an inflammatory disorder. In the chronic disease community, she said, “journey” is a debated word. “It’s a way to romanticize ordinary or unpleasant experiences, like, ‘Oh, this is something special and magical.’” Not everyone appreciates this, she said.

According to the linguistics professor Jesse Egbert at Northern Arizona University, the use of “journey” (the noun) has nearly doubled in American English since 1990, with the most frequent instances occurring online. Mining a new database of conversational American English he and colleagues are building, Egbert could show exactly how colloquial “journey” has become: One woman in Pennsylvania described her “journey to become a morning person,” while another, in Massachusetts, said she was “on a journey of trying to like fish.”

Egbert was able to further demonstrate how the word itself has undergone a transformative journey — what linguists call “semantic drift.” It wasn’t so long ago that Americans mostly used “journey” to mean a literal trip, whereas now it’s more popular as a metaphor. Egbert demonstrated this by searching the more than one billion words in a database called COCA for the nouns people put before “journey” to clarify what sort they’re on. Between 1990 and 2005, the most common modifier was “return,” followed by words like “ocean,” “train,” “mile,” “night,” “overland,” and “bus.”

But between 2006 and 2019, usage shifted. “Return” remains the most common noun modifier to journey, but now it’s followed closely by “faith,” “cancer,” and “life.” Among the top 25 nouns used to modify “journey” today are: “soul,” “adoption,” and “hair.”

In almost every language, “journey” has become a way to talk abstractly about outcomes, for good reason: According to what linguists call the “primary metaphor theory,” humans learn as babies crawling toward their toys that “‘purpose’ and ‘destination’ coincide,” said Elena Semino, a linguist at Lancaster University who specializes in metaphor. As we become able to accomplish our goals while sitting still (standardized tests! working from home!), ambition and travel diverge. Yet we continue to envision achievement as a matter of forward progress. This is why we say, “‘I know what I want, but I don’t know how to get there,’” Semino explained. “Or ‘I’m at a crossroads.’”

So it’s not surprising, perhaps, that as Americans started seeing good health as a desirable goal, achievable through their own actions and choices — and marketers encouraged these pursuits and commodified them — the words “journey” and “health” became inextricably linked. In 1898, C.W. Post wrote a pamphlet he called “The Road to Wellville,” which he attached to each box of his new product, Grape-Nuts. In 1926, the Postum Cereal Company republished the pamphlet as a small book , now with the subtitle, “A Personally Conducted Journey to the Land of Good Health by the Route of Right Living.”

The language (and business) of self-help so completely saturates culture, “it gets kind of hard to trace where a word started and where it came from,” said Jessica Lamb-Shapiro, author of “Promise Land: My Journey Through America’s Self-Help Culture.” Americans like to put an optimistic, brave spin on suffering, and “journey” seeped in because, Lamb-Shapiro speculated, it’s bland enough to “tackle really difficult things,” yet positive enough to “make them palatable and tolerable.”

“Journey” had fully entered medical speak by the 2010s. Many cancer patients recoiled from the “battle” language traditionally used by doctors, as well as by friends and relatives. In “Illness as Metaphor,” Susan Sontag had noted back in 1978 that “every physician and every attentive patient is familiar with, if perhaps inured to, this military terminology.” But now, opposition to the notion of disease as an enemy combatant reached a crescendo. To reflexively call an experience of cancer a battle created “winners” and “losers,” where death or long suffering represented a failure — of will, strength, determination, diet, behavior, or outlook — on the part of the patient.

Many patients “detest” the military metaphor, Robert Miller conceded in Oncology Times in 2010. Knowing this, Miller, then a breast cancer oncologist affiliated with Johns Hopkins, said he struggled to find the right words in composing a condolence note to a patient’s spouse. “I welcome suggestions,” he wrote.

“Journey” seemed less judgmental, more neutral. In Britain, the National Health Service had started to almost exclusively use “journey” language in reference to cancer (treatments were “pathways”). Semino, the metaphor expert whose father had died of cancer at a time when patients’ diagnoses were hidden from them, wanted to examine how patients talked about it — and whether that language caused them harm. In a research paper Semino published with colleagues in 2015, she looked at how patients talked about their cancer on forums online and found that they still used “battle” as often as they did “journey,” and that “journey” could be disempowering, as well.

For some people, talking about cancer as a “journey” gave them a sense of control and camaraderie — buddies traveling the same path — but others used the term to convey their exhaustion. Having cancer “is like trying to drive a coach and horses uphill with no back wheels on the coach,” one man wrote. Patients used “journey” to describe just how passive they felt or how reluctant to bear the burden of their disease. Separately, patients have told Semino how much they hate the word “journey,” saying it trivializes their experience, that it’s clichéd.

But it was too late: The metaphor already was everywhere. In 2014, Anna Wintour was asked which word she would like to banish from the fashion lexicon and she said, “journey.” The following year, Yolanda Foster, the mother of Gigi and Bella Hadid, told People magazine that while she was on her Lyme disease journey, two of her children were afflicted, too. Medical journals and government publications began describing insomnia , the effort to achieve health-care reform , diabetes , and the development of RSV vaccines as a journey. The term “healing journey,” in use since at least the mid-2010s, blew up around 2021. The phrase in news media referenced the experience of cancer , celebrity weight loss , trafficking of Indigenous children , Sean Combs’s creative process , spa vacations , amputation , and better sex .

On the Reddit channel Chronic Illness, one poster eloquently fumed that persistent sickness is not a journey. “It’s endless, pointless and repetitive. There’s no new ground to gain here.” The cultural insistence on illness as a journey, from which a traveler can learn useful, or even life-changing lessons, becomes something to “disassociate from, survive, endure.” It “causes social isolation.”

Although she concedes its downsides, Stephanie Swanson likes to think of herself as on a journey. Swanson, who is 37 and lives in Kansas City, was an engineer by training, with three young children, a career and a sideline as an aerialist, when she got long Covid in the summer of 2022. The things that had made her successful — her physical stamina, her ability to solve problems — evaporated. “I’ve had to give up my career, my hobbies, my physical abilities,” she said. “I’ve gained 30 pounds on my tiny dancer body. I’m doing the best I can with what I have.”

Swanson makes a distinction between “journey” and “trip”: The latter is circumscribed by a start, an end, and hotel and restaurant reservations along the way. She sees “journey” as a way to capture the arc of a whole life.

When she was running operations at a medical center at the University of Kansas, she always imagined slowing down to enjoy her kids more or to read a book, but “I felt like my head was going to explode.” Now Swanson has become a person who must rent a wheelchair for her upcoming trip to New York City, and she likes how “journey” accommodates all the challenging, unexpected circumstances she confronts. “To me, the word ‘journey’ resonates with choosing to be on a path of acceptance but not standing still,” she said. “I’m not giving up, but recognizing that this is the path I’m on.”

Ramani Durvasula uses ”journey” advisedly. A clinical psychologist in Los Angeles who treats women in emotionally abusive relationships, she recognizes how “journey” has been “eye-rollingly cheapened” and has started to experiment with alternatives. She’s tried “process.” She’s tried “healing trajectory.” But she falls back on journey, because it, more than any other word, expresses the step-by-step, sometimes circular or backward nature of enduring something hard. “Arguably, a journey doesn’t have a destination,” she said. “Have you ever taken a hike in a loop? And you end up exactly where you parked your car?”

But Durvasula does object to the easy-breezy healing so many journey hashtags promote, what she calls the “post-sobriety, post-weight-loss, now-I’m-in-love-again-after-my-toxic-relationship” reels. Too many TikToks show the crying in the car then the cute party dress, skipping over the middle, when people feel ugly, angry, self-loathing, and hopeless. “I want to see the hell,” she said. “I want to see the nightmare.”

When in 2020 a Swedish linguist named Charlotte Hommerberg studied how advanced cancer patients describe their experience, she found they used “battle” and “journey,” like everyone else. But most also used a third metaphor that conveyed not progress, fight or hope. They said cancer was like “imprisonment,” a feeling of being stuck — like a “free bird in a cage,” one person wrote. Powerless and going nowhere.

Worthwhile or Worthy? (and Worth) – Explanation & Exercises

Here is the simplest advice I can give on the difference between the adjectives worthy and worthwhile :

1. If you are talking about a person or thing (a noun ) that deserves respect/attention/recognition/etc, use worthy.

  • John is worthy of a promotion.
  • That idea is worthy of consideration.

2. If you are talking about the value of doing an activity , use  worthwhile.

  • Brushing your teeth is worthwhile .
  • If you're going to travel abroad, getting health insurance is worthwhile .

That is the most important distinction. See below for more details.

Word Family for 'Worth'

As you can see, worth, worthy , and worthy are all adjectives , but worth is also a noun . Let's focus on adjectives and their most common uses.

'Worthy' Means Something/Someone is Deserving of Recognition/Respect/Attention

The adjective worthy describes something that deserves recognition, respect , or attention . For example:

  • His songs are worthy of recognition . (= The songs are good enough/deserve to be recognized.)
  • The offer was not worthy of consideration . (= It did not deserve to be considered.)
  • He is a man worthy of respect. (= He deserves to be respected.)

As you can see, worthy  is often combined with the preposition of .

Worthy can also be used before a noun :

  • The boxer wanted to find a worthy opponent . (He was looking for an opponent that deserved his attention.)
  • I think this charity is a worthy cause . (The charity deserves respect/recognition as a cause.)

In summary, if you are talking about a noun (a thing or person) that deserves respect or attention, use worthy .

'Worthwhile' Means an Activity Has Enough Value to Spend Time On

The adjective worthwhile  describes an activity (never a person) that has enough value to spend effort or time on.

Remember that the word while is always used with an activity that takes time . For example, I read while I take the train . Here, taking the train is an action that takes time.  Similarly to how we use while , you can only use worthwhile with activities that take time.

  • Reading on the train is worthwhile .
  • It is worthwhile to read on the train.

( Note : Worthwhile is sometimes written as two words, 'worth while', and sometimes 'worth my/your/his/her/their while'.)

Both of these sentences mean that reading is an activity that has enough value to justify doing it. Here are some more examples with the actions in purple :

  • Getting your teeth cleaned by a dentist is worthwhile .
  • Meeting Jane was worthwhile .
  • Mark is not sure if getting a Master's degree would be worthwhile .

Note: Expressions 'Worth the Time' & 'Worth Your While'

Instead of using worthwhile , you can also use the expressions worth your time / worth your while / worth it:

  • Getting your teeth cleaned by a dentist is worth your time / worth the while / worth it .
  • Meeting Jane was worth my time / worth it .
  • Mark is not sure if getting a Master's degree would be worth his time / worth his while / worth it .

Worthwhile + Noun

Even without the verb representing the activity, we can still use worthwhile   when the activity we are referring to is understood.

  • I hope reading this lesson is worthwhile. > I hope this is a worthwhile lesson. ('This' refers to reading the lesson)
  • Visiting the dentist was worthwhile. = It was a worthwhile visit. ('It' refers to visiting the dentist)

That's the end of the lesson on worthy vs worthwhile . If you'd like to read a little about worth , see below.

'Worth' Describes the Value of an Object

The adjective  worth tells you the value (usually financial) of an object.

  • That book is worth $10.
  • I bought a table worth $300.

Worth can also refer to the value of investing time or effort. As mentioned above, when used this way, it is the same as worthwhile .

  • It is not worth the time. (= It is not worthwhile.)
  • It's not worth the effort. (= Doing it is not worthwhile.)

Worth + Gerund (Verb in ~ing Form) = Worthwhile

If you follow the adjective  worth with a verb in the ~ing form, it has the same meaning as worthwhile . Compare:

  • The movie is worth seeing . = Seeing the movie is worthwhile.
  • It's worth getting travel insurance. = Getting travel insurance is worthwhile .
  • If you are talking about a person or thing (a noun ) that is deserving of something, use worthy.

He is worthy of respect/recognition/consideration.

  • Worthwhile : Exercising regularly is worthwhile .
  • An expression (such as 'worth your time/while/trouble/effort'): Exercising regularly is worth your time.
  • Worth + gerund : It is worth exercising regularly .
  • If you are talking about the value (usually financial) of a thing (a noun ), use worth.

This house is worth four million dollars.

a hat for a university graduation ceremony

Is attending university worthwhile? What is the worth (value) of a university degree?

Do you think you understand? Try these exercises .

Exercises: Worthy, Worthwhile, or Worth

  • I think her book is  .. worthy worthwhile worth  of an award.
  • Reading to your child is  .. worthy worthwhile worth .
  • Roger Penrose won the Nobel Prize for his work in physics. He is .. worthy worthwhile worth  of respect.
  • His car is  .. worthy worthwhile worth  $80,000.
  • This story is  .. worthy worthwhile worth  of your attention. It's important.
  • The company decided that opening another store would be  .. worthy worthwhile worth .
  • Ana had an idea, but she decided that it wasn't  .. worthy worthwhile worth  mentioning.
  • worthy - The word 'book' is a noun, not an activity. We are saying the book is deserving of recognition.
  • worthwhile - This is an activity. We are saying that this activity has value.
  • worthy - We are talking about a noun here (a man), and 'worthy' collocates with the preposition 'of'
  • worth - We are talking about the financial value of an object here.
  • worthy - We are talking about a noun here (a story), and 'worthy' collocates with the preposition 'of'
  • worthwhile - Opening another store is an activity.
  • worth - Remember that worth + v~ing (gerund) means has the same meaning as worthwhile

I hope reading this lesson has been worthwhile. If you find a mistake or have a question, please leave a comment below.

Purdue President Chiang to grads: As you weigh your life decisions, consider the hard way — the Boilermaker way — reflective of core principles consistent with your values

chiang-commencement-address

Purdue President Mung Chiang made these remarks during the university’s Spring 2024 Commencement ceremonies May 10-12.

As we celebrate your graduation, it is customary at our university for the president to say a few words with some specific theme. To the Boilermakers who have gone through SARS2 COVID-19 during your undergraduate or graduate studies, a special congratulations is warranted. You have persevered, and you are here today!

For many among the graduating class, four years ago was the time you arrived at Purdue. In person. Purdue announced in April 2020, one month after the nationwide shutdown, that we would reopen campus in the fall semester.

Some thought that was crazy. A few claimed that thousands of deaths would be on Purdue’s hands. Yet this university turned out to be among the safest places during the pandemic.

There were several factors behind this memorable success:

First, the university leadership was determined to provide clarity. We did not intend to give up the institutional duty of residential learning and research before even giving it a try through ample testing, quarantine space and indoor masking.

Second, faculty and staff worked doubly hard so that you, the students and parents, could have a choice: in person, online or hybrid.

Third, all university community members, including tens of thousands of Purdue students, behaved, well, like adults. You were mature and responsible in living out the Protect Purdue Pledge.

Purdue weighed the trade-off between the pros and cons of each option. We chose to give reopening a try early enough to have time to prepare for it. We followed the scientific evidence in safe reopening protocols. We prepared a backup plan of completely remote learning if reopening were to be shown as nonviable. And we kept doing the right thing even when we were accused of the opposite, at the time by many and by the media.

In your career, there will often be an easier way to get to a desired destination. And then there will be a harder way.

In this case, safety and health was the desired destination. The easier way to get there was to keep the campus shut down: charge students the same tuition, follow the vast majority of peers and claim the moral high ground. It’s the safe way for administrators not to lose their jobs, but never mind the dereliction of duty to you, the students. The harder way was to try to reopen through meticulous preparation.

The easier way tends to be the natural way for individuals and for organizations. But perhaps you might want to pick the harder way: what makes it harder also makes it worthwhile.

You are also among the generation of students who did not see a tuition increase at Purdue. President Daniels and the Board of Trustees announced in 2013 an experiment of freezing tuition for a year. That experiment continues today, with an announced tuition freeze for the 13th year in a row.

It’s more than a financial statement. It’s a statement about our institutional values as a public land-grant university providing the uplifting power of education with excellence at scale.

We don’t take frozen tuition for granted. Each year we carefully evaluate our financial strength and the macroeconomic condition. And we can’t guarantee it will always keep going, even though we will try. Well, to the graduates today: You don’t have to worry about tuition increases any more.

And we have been freezing tuition while providing salary increases competitive across the Big Ten and investing in physical facilities for our places, programs and people. Among the 23 construction and renovation projects that completed or started last year, 1.3 billion dollars were invested. Some from philanthropy, some from the state, and much from our accumulated savings. Savings? Yes, we insist on operating on a surplus budget.

How is it possible? Cost efficiency and economy of scale helps but has a limit. The answer is simple. Look at the income column: Undergraduate tuition is only 38% of our operating budget. Instead of raising tuition at or above inflation — like almost everywhere else for the past half a century — how about we work harder to increase the other 62%, the bigger slice of the pie?

Running a healthy budget is the goal here, but there are two ways to achieve it. The easier way is to increase the 38%. Demand is so inelastic: What can the students and parents do if we were to increase tuition by 5% each year? Most of you would have no choice but to pay up, however much we charge you. It’s an easy way to be lazy, to mask inefficiency and to keep the “good times” going. The harder way was to increase the 62%: We need to be innovative and diligent.

Picking the harder way is not just about working harder, though. It’s also a reflection of deeper thinking about principles, priorities and trade-offs. Choices are made by each of you at every juncture in life. Perhaps choose the harder way. That’s the Boilermaker way.

Boilermakers: How could I forget the madness of this March? You participated in Purdue’s first men’s basketball national championship game since 1969, our centennial year when Neil Armstrong took his small steps on the moon. 2023-24 became the winningest season in program history, culminating in the first five wins at a national tournament. It’s a journey for all Boilermakers past and present, and for all the fans with your thundering yet classy support at every game.

Yes, we are proud of Athletic Director Bobinski, Coach Painter, their staff and the student-athletes: not only their hard-fought victories as a team, but also how they overcome doubt, persist through tough times, and get to work even when being overlooked. Most of all, we are proud of the character reflected in Purdue student-athletes’ conduct, both on and off the court.

It also reflects how this university pursues intercollegiate athletics, even when — or especially when — that world is going through tremendous turbulence from every angle. These days, many feel that the word “college" is being taken out of college athletics, and some universities look like minor sports leagues that happen to also give diplomas.

In contrast, Purdue Athletics remains a financially self-supporting entity. Our coaches still uphold values like integrity, sportsmanship and academics. All of our student-athletes are indeed students, achieving a cumulative 3.14 GPA that is hardly distinguishable from the campus as a whole — you know we don’t do grade inflation here — and attaining a 90% graduation rate. Last year and again this year, 100% of the graduating student-athletes were placed into their preferred careers.

In today’s environment of Division I sports, it’s harder to be competitive at the highest level while holding on to these principles. With these guardrails, we have chosen to recruit and coach harder than we would need to otherwise. It’s not the easier path lined with dollars and disillusionment, but your university remains steadfast to Purdue’s long-standing values.

As you weigh your life decisions, or when you lead an organization large or small, consider the harder way: not because it’s harder, but because it’s more reflective of the core principles consistent with your values, even at the cost of deeper diligence, higher risks and longer patience.

May there always be that Boilermaker spirit of choosing the harder way in you. Boiler Up!

journey is worthwhile

  • The AI journey – is there an overview?

Commentary on the Stanford AI Index report: Key takeaways, balancing the opportunities and risks of AI, and exploring evolving technology trends.

  • KPMG Switzerland Blog
  • Prof. Dr. Rob Fijneman , Partner |

We are inundated with use cases for Artificial Intelligence (AI). Every company is now exploring and showcasing what they can achieve with the help of AI. This often involves improving the client experience, achieving efficiency gains and overcoming the challenges of limited internal resources.

As always new technologies require a balanced view between opportunities and risks. This seems to be business as usual; however, with the huge technological push of AI, it can be difficult to assess this properly.

Stanford University with the help of key partners published the seventh edition of their Artificial Intelligence Index Report [1] . This report can be seen as a comprehensive look at where AI stands and where its future lies. It is based on in-depth academic research and the help of business partners. This year, the report’s scope has been broadened to cover key trends such as the technical advances in AI more broadly, public perceptions of the technology and the geopolitical dynamics surrounding its development.

The report highlights the following top 10 takeaways :

  • AI beats humans at some tasks, but not at all.
  • Industry continues to dominate frontier AI research.
  • Frontier models get much more expensive.
  • The United States leads China, the EU and the UK as the leading source of top AI models.
  • There is a serious lack of robust and standardized assessments of LLM accountability.
  • Investments into generative AI are skyrocketing.
  • The data is in: AI makes workers more productive and leads to higher-quality work.
  • Scientific progress accelerates even further, thanks to AI.
  • The number of AI regulations in the United States is sharply increasing.
  • People across the globe have become more aware of AI’s potential impact—and more nervous.

Let’s focus on responsible AI, which is getting a lot of attention with the new EU AI Act. The Stanford report contains a full chapter on this topic, creating insights in the risks arising from the use of AI. As the report states: in 2023, 123 incidents were reported, a 32.3% increase from 2022. Since 2013, AI incidents have increased more than twenty-fold. The continuous increase in reported incidents likely arises from both greater integration of AI into real-world applications and heightened awareness of its potential for ethical misuse. However, it is important to note that as awareness grows, incident tracking and reporting also improve, indicating that earlier incidents may have been underreported.

The risk survey, performed as part of the 2024 index report, learns that data governance and privacy are identified as key risks especially in Europe and Asia. In the US, these risks are perceived to be of a less serious nature. Many more details can be found in the report. It is worthwhile to explore these.

In our practice we use the responsible AI model ourselves intensively not only to help businesses but also to review our own AI tools and developments. As you can imagine, our services and solutions are seriously affected by AI. Audit, tax and advisory services will change, and we have only just begun this journey ourselves. Obviously, the human touch is needed to remain successful and manage this journey properly.

GV’s youngest partner has launched her own firm

Terri Burns

Terri Burns, a former partner at GV, is venturing into a new chapter of her career by launching her own venture firm called Type Capital .  It will focus on early-stage startups, cutting pre-seed and seed-sized checks, reports Fortune . Burns told Fortune she is still in the beginning stages of building out her firm and hasn’t invested in any companies yet. She confirmed to TechCrunch that her new firm has launched but declined to offer more details on her plans or the size of the fund. The launch of Type Capital is a significant milestone as it marks Terri Burns’ entry into the select group of Black women with their own venture firms. Black women who have co-founded or solo-founded their own firms include Jewel Burks Solomon from Collab Capital, Sarah Kunst from Cleo Capital, and Monique Woodard from Cake Ventures.  This achievement further underscores Burns’ remarkable journey in the venture industry, which began when she joined GV in 2017. In 2020, at the age of 26, she made history as the firm’s youngest and first-ever Black female partner.  Burns started her career at Twitter as an associate product manager before becoming a Kauffman Fellow and studying computer science at NYU. In 2021, she became the youngest member of the university’s Board of Trustees.  During her tenure at GV, Terri Burns played a pivotal role in many of the firm’s successful investments. Notably, she led the investment into the social app HAGS, which was later acquired by Snapchat. Her involvement in the popular Partiful, which has since raised over $20 million from investors, including a16z, further solidified her as a savvy consumer tastemaker. She’s an angel investor and also co-founded an angel investment collective that has invested in at least 11 companies, including Clubhouse.  Burns is interested in Gen Z founders, digital consumer companies, developer tools, and, of course, artificial intelligence. Like many seed-stage firms, she wants to be the first check in. Too often, she said, investors follow the hype train, missing out on good deals as they wait for signals from other investors that a company is worthwhile. She hopes to find promising founders and use her considerable network to help them find follow-on opportunities, she told Fortune.
