Jungle Safari at Statue of unity – Zoological Park

Sardar Patel Zoological Park is a major Tourist Destination at Kevadia in Narmada district of Gujarat State, spread over an area of around 375 acres with extremely undulating topography. The Zoo houses 2 Bird aviaries. These two aviaries are having state of the art geodesic design designated for Indian and exotic Birds. The geo domes of Bird aviaries are going to cover an area of 1.5 hectares with complex architectural design to create a structural marvel.

Jungle Safari

A state-of-art zoological park with unique collection of indigenous and exotic animals and birds from the various biogeographic regions of the world, is located at the picturesque hills near the tallest statue of the world “The Statue of Unity” and “The Sardar Sarovar Dam” at Ekta Nagar. This zoo will take you through an adventurous and exciting trip of watching wildlife, enjoying scenic beauty of the hills and entertaining experiences of a lifetime.

The Jungle Safari covers 375 acres at seven different levels ranging from an altitude or elevation of 29 metres to 180 metres, on the right bank of the Narmada River, near Statue of Unity. The park is a home to more than 186 species of fauna, covering various biomes of Africa, Australia, Asia and America. Visitors will also be able to spot India’s endangered species, which includes the magnificent big cats such as Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger and Leopard. The safari route has been designed such, that the visitors can view animal activities, spot reptiles and watch birds.

Exciting Features : This Jungle Safari is an adventure ride, which gives an opportunity to explore the unexplored trails and untouched natural horizons. Clusters have been designed to house the animals’ continent-wise namely Australia, Africa and South America. The significant feature of this park is that, the visitors can see animals in an open environment and the forest will provide the effect of a Jungle Safari kind of tour. The undulating terrain of Vindhya hills makes it an ideal abode for the creatures here.

Another highlight is the walk through Aviary, harbouring the finest of indigenous birds. Here the visitors can walk amidst of the birds specific to varied habitats, which have been created simulating the natural habitat of each of the species. The view will not be obstructed by the bars of the cages. It has two aviaries housing large number of birds. These aviaries, constructed as geodesic domes are among the largest geodesic domes in India (Indian Aviary is 150 meters long, 50 meters wide and 15 meters high & Exotic Aviary is 125 meters long, 35 meters wide and 15 meters high).

Each of the enclosures has been specifically enriched, so as to keep the animal active and vigorous. The safari route has been designed to enable visitors observe animals, reptiles and birds in near-natural surroundings. Additional key feature is the landscaping that soothes the senses of all. Even the landscaping inside enclosures is in tandem with the original habitat of the animals and birds.

There are several tourist attractions located close to the Statue of Unity, and enhance the entire experience of sightseeing tour of the Statue of Unity. These tourist attractions comprise the Kevadia tourism circuit.

Sardar Patel Zoological Park is located just 3.3 kilometers from the Statue of Unity. Located in Kevadia, it is also known as Jungle Safari Park. Unlike other zoological parks, it’s created in an open design and recreates the feel of a wildlife safari. You get to see almost 170 species of animals from America, Asia, Africa and Australia in their natural habitat.

Kevadia , officially known as Ekta Nagar , is a town of 6,800 people (2011) in South Gujarat , India. It is best known for the Statue of Unity, a colossal statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Understand [ edit ]

Kevadia is along the northern banks of the Narmada River. The small village turned into town when a colony was built for workers during construction of the gigantic Sardar Sarovar Dam. A new village Navagam was also built nearby to accommodate workers and displaced people. The town was a minor tourist spot due to dam but when the Statue of Unity was built in 2010s, it became one of the top tourist spots in the country. Gradually more and more attractions were added and other nearby tourism facilities were developed.

The local population is chiefly of tribal origin and reside in nearby villages in forests and hills. They come to town for employment and doing small businesses. Most street vendors belong from these tribal communities. They have their own culture and customs. Many of them faced displacement when the dam was built.

By plane [ edit ].

The nearest airport is at Vadodara which is 91 km (1.5 hr) from Kevadia by road. Other airports include Ahmedabad and Surat which are 198 km (3.5 hr) and 156 km (3 hr) away respectively from Kevadia by road.

By train [ edit ]

Trains are the easiest and least costly way to reach. People can board trains from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Varanasi, Rewa in Madhya Pradesh, Ahmedabad, and Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh. Check your train timings and plan accordingly.

By bus [ edit ]

There are bus stands at both the station and the Bus Bay for state-operated GSRTC buses. Some private luxury bus operators provides packaged tour from Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat who drop you at the parkings.

By car [ edit ]

The roads leading to Kevadia are excellent. From Bharuch , from NH48, catch SH64 and than SH5 to reach Garudeshwar. From there, a four-lane road takes to Kevadia.

Get around [ edit ]

No private vehicles are allowed in the Statue of Unity restricted zone beyond Ekta Dwar except parking lots and if you are going to Tent City. If you drove in, park at one of the three parkings, buy/have tickets and use the free bus service.

You can see inside constructions of the statue. ₹380 for adults and ₹230 for children. Time slots are allocated in online tickets to visit Viewing Gallery. Only 7000 tickets per day.

Bring ORS packs or lemonade to stay safe from the dehydration in the summer. Use a cap or headscarf. Free drinking water is available at several places so bring your own water bottle for refill. It saves you money as well as environment! A baggage counter is located at Bus Bay where small/medium sized bags can be deposited for free. Hand purses are allowed in the Statue of Unity complex and elsewhere.

Jungle Safari

Operational Hours – 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. The Jungle Safari covers 375 acres at seven different levels ranging from an altitude or elevation of 29 meters to 180 meters, on the right bank of the Narmada River, near Statue of Unity. The park is home to more than 186 species of fauna, covering various biomes of Africa, Australia, Asia, and America. Visitors will also be able to spot India’s endangered species, which includes the magnificent big cats such as Asiatic Lion, Royal Bengal Tiger, and Leopard. The safari route has been designed such, that the visitors can view animal activities, spot reptiles and watch birds.

Miyawaki Forest

Miyawaki is a technique pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki that helps build dense, native forests in a short time. It has revolutionized the concept of urban afforestation by turning backyards into mini-forests. This method includes planting trees (only native species) as close as possible in the same area which not only saves space, but the planted saplings also support each other in growth and block sunlight reaching the ground, thereby preventing the growth of weed. The saplings become maintenance-free (self-sustainable) after the first three years. This approach is supposed to ensure that plant growth is 10 times faster and the resulting plantation is 30 times denser than usual. Miyawaki method helps to create a forest in just 2 to 3 years, while through conventional methods it takes anywhere between 20 to 30 years. Sardar Patel Zoological Park, Vadodara Overview

Sardar Patel Zoological Park is a newly inaugurated zoo situated in Kevadia, a town in the Narmada district of Gujarat. Located in the vicinity of the majestic Statue of Unity, this tremendous establishment hosts about 170 different species of wildlife from all across the globe, is home to a wide range of plant life and has a breathtaking aviary inhabited by endemic as well as foreign varieties of birds. The Royal Bengal Tigers, Zebras, Leopards etc. are only a few examples of wild animals one can explore here.

The park was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31st October 2020, commemorating the birth anniversary of the much revered leader of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. It is spread over a vast expanse of land about 1,300 acres in size. Unlike conventional zoos, the Sardar Patel Zoological Park is built with an “open design”, wherein the animals aren’t displayed in cages, but bred in their natural environment. Golf carts are provided for excursions through the park, which truly feel as thrilling as a jungle safari. Volunteers are present at every nook and corner of the park to assist tourists and guide them around the premises.
