2024 Travel Award Program Flyer (Overview)

Congratulations to the 2023 Travel Award Class!

The American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP) annually selects distinguished young scientists in the field of neuropsychopharmacology to be part of our travel award program. These travel awards offer an opportunity to attend an outstanding scientific program in clinical and basic research on brain-behavior-drug interactions, become aware of the most recent, and often unpublished, advances in psychopharmacology, and meet and interact with internationally distinguished researchers and scientists.

As part of our Travel Award Program, we recognize the ACNP Young Investigator Memorial Travel Awards, established in 1997 to commemorate the life and work of deceased College members who made contributions to the field of neuropsychopharmacology. These were awarded 1998-2005 in the names of; Louis S. Lasagna (1923-2003), Marian Weinbaum Fischman (1939-2001), Arnold J. Friedhoff (1923-2001), Leo Hollister (1920-2000), Seymour Kety (1915-2000), Heinz E. Lehmann (1911-1999), Jerry Sepinwall (1940-1998), Menek Goldstein (1926-1997), Daniel X. Freedman (1921-1993), and Gerald L. Kierman (1928-1992). ACNP continues to honor their contributions, made both during their lives and in memoriam through the support of young investigators, many of whom have gone on to become ACNP Members and make significant contributions to the field.

APPLICATION PERIOD

The College is no longer accepting applications for travel awards. The deadline for application submission was April 18, 2024  by 5:00pm Central Time.

ELIGIBILITY

Any scientist worldwide is eligible to apply for a travel award. All candidates must be eligible in one of the three applicant tiers AND meet training/post training limits as described below. The post training limit (5 years past final training) can be extended by up to 2 years for significant life events and/or career advancement delays due to the COVID pandemic. In this case, please provide background information in the application about the circumstances for the committee to consider (e.g., birth/adoption of a child, childcare, eldercare, illness or disability of applicant, care for an ill/disabled family member, personal or family tragedy, COVID-related lab shut-down, etc.). ACNP members (all categories of membership) and previous Travel Awardees are not eligible to apply.

Candidates from historically excluded groups in science and medicine are highly encouraged to apply. ACNP defines historically excluded groups as Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders, and individuals who identify as LGBTQIA2S+.

APPLICANT TIERS

Clinical student level.

Clinical Student Level applicants are defined as those individuals who currently are candidates for a clinician-scientist dual degree (M.D./Ph.D., Pharm.D./Ph.D.), or are in another graduate-level clinical program (M.D., D.O., D.V.M., D.N.P., Psy.D., Clinical Psychology) and are receiving research training. Those individuals who already have earned their graduate degree are ineligible to apply for this student award and should consider applying in the appropriate Junior or Senior level awards. Those working to obtain a non-clinician Ph.D. (without a clinical degree) are ineligible for this award and should apply for the Junior level award.

Junior Level

Junior Level applicants are defined as those individuals who are at or below Assistant Professor (or equivalent level if in a non-academic institution) AND currently engaged in research training, i.e.: non-clinician Ph.D. students, medical residents or fellows, Pharm.D. residents, interns, and post-doctoral fellows. These applicants may be within, but no more than 5 years past their final training. Post training for clinicians (M.D.’s, D.O.’s, Psy.D.’s, D.V.M.’s, D.N.P.’s, Clinical Psychologists) will be counted from the final year of their residency or fellowship. Post training for Pharm.D.’s will be counted from completion of Pharm.D. or residency, if completed. Post training for non-clinician Ph.D.’s will be counted from the last year of postdoctoral fellowship.

Senior Level

Senior Level applicants are defined as those individuals who are at the Assistant Professor level or its equivalent, but not an R01 awardee. Applicants may be no more than 5 years past their final training (postdoctoral fellowship or residency). Any person who is an Associate Professor or has already obtained an R01, is considered too senior to apply for a travel award. Post training for clinicians (M.D.’s, D.O.’s, Psy.D.’s, D.V.M.’s, D.N.P.’s, clinical program Ph.D.’s) will be counted from the final year of their residency or fellowship. Traveling in 2024? These 10 apps and websites make award redemptions easier to find

Tarah Chieffi

Editor's Note

We get it — mastering points and miles is no easy feat. You may have already seen our guide to getting started with points and miles , but what happens once you are ready to cash those points in for a trip?

Maximizing points and miles to travel luxuriously without breaking the bank doesn't need to be laborious and time-consuming. In fact, there are various tools available that make it easier to find hotel and flight award availability .

With these tools, you can use your points to travel where you want, when you want and how you want in 2024 without spending hours searching for availability.

Here are 10 of the best apps and websites that help make award travel redemptions easy and stress-free.

Max My Point

What it does : Tracks hotel award availability at Hyatt, Hilton, IHG and Marriott properties

What it costs : Free for basic membership; $3.99 per month for a monthly membership

Max My Point is a website that lets you check award availability for Hyatt, Hilton, IHG and Marriott properties worldwide — taking the guesswork out of award redemption searches by showing only real-time pricing and availability.

The homepage shows popular properties, but you can also sort by point value and availability or search for specific properties.

travel award 2024

Once you choose a property, you can view a calendar that displays standard room points pricing, standard suite points pricing and the lowest cash rate for a full year, allowing you to plan your trip around the dates with the best points pricing.

After you click on the check-in date you want, you'll automatically be redirected to that property's website to start the booking process.

travel award 2024

If you can't find the availability you are looking for, you can register for a free account and set up an alert to receive an email if availability changes.

TPG's director of content operations, Andrea Rotondo, likes using Max My Point to search for Hyatt award night availability. Although Hyatt guarantees standard room availability on points when the same room is available with cash, that isn't always the case once you start searching directly through Hyatt.

StayWithPoints

What it does : Tracks hotel award availability at Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott properties

What it costs : Free

travel award 2024

On the StayWithPoints site, you can view points redemption availability from Hyatt, Hilton and Marriott properties around the globe. Or, you can use StayWithPoints' amalgamated list of popular properties for inspiration.

travel award 2024

Clicking through to a specific property shows you a full year of award availability, points value and cash and points pricing per night.

It can take some scrolling, but you can find some great cash prices and award redemptions — like this search that brought up a full week of points availability at Zemi Beach House in Anguilla.

travel award 2024

After clicking your preferred check-in date, you'll be taken straight to the hotel's website to book directly.

If you register for a free account you can also set alerts for when award redemptions become available for the properties you have your eye on.

What it does : Syncs your credit cards and loyalty programs to help you spend smarter and earn more points and miles

travel award 2024

We're not above a little shameless self-promotion, and honestly, this list wouldn't be complete without a nod to our very own TPG App .

Within the app, you can see all your credit cards in one place, track your hotel and airline loyalty program points and miles , get recommendations for the best card to use for different purchases, keep up with the latest TPG news and so much more.

travel award 2024

Once you're ready to spend the points you've accumulated, you can use the TPG App's "Award Explorer" tool to find out how many points or miles you'll need to book your dream vacation.

Just input your departure airport, the destination and how many tickets you need, and the TPG App will display estimated points pricing across 21 loyalty programs (based on availability).

You'll also be able to see how close you are to having enough points for that particular trip and whether you're better off paying in cash or points.

TPG's newsletter editor, Becky Blaine, likes using the TPG App to choose the card that will net her the most points based on where she is shopping. Earning points more quickly helps her take those dream trips even sooner.

What it does : Finds flight award availability based on your itinerary

What it costs : $5 to enjoy Standard Plan access for 24 hours; the Standard Plan starts at $129 annually

travel award 2024

Point.me 's robust interface checks for award flights within 34 loyalty programs across more than 100 airlines.

By entering your itinerary details, Point.me will display real-time award availability, including which transfer partner will get you the most bang for your buck.

Point.me also has a team of experts available 24 hours a day to help you travel more for fewer points with advice tailored specifically to your needs. How much you pay determines how tailored your experience will be.

To try the service for just one trip, you can pay $5 to access Point.me for 24 hours (unless you have access to a complimentary code). The Standard Plan starts at $129 annually, while the Premium Plan costs $260 per year. You can also use Point.me's concierge service to have travel experts book your trip for you for $200 per passenger. Additionally, you can schedule a one-on-one consultation to help you meet your points and miles earning (and redeeming) goals.

Bilt Rewards users can access a limited version of Point.me for free through the Bilt Rewards app. Similar to the full version, you can search for award flight availability, though you will only see results from programs that are Bilt transfer partners. If you have Bilt Rewards you want to transfer to an airline loyalty program to purchase tickets using points, this is a good way to try Point.me for free.

Related: Bilt Rewards app adds live award availability powered by Point.me

Roame.travel

What it costs : Free for the basic Community plan but requires signing up for a free account to search

travel award 2024

Roame.travel works a lot like Point.me but without the charge. All you need to do is sign up for a free account to search 11 airline programs for award availability. Unlike Point.me, Roame.travel gives nearly instant search results in under 12 seconds.

Roame.travel shows lots of multicabin awards, so make sure you closely review your cabin classes. In the screenshot above, two of the three flights are mixed-cabin itineraries, with the transpacific flight in economy class.

As always, we recommend confirming award availability before transferring awards.

Related: The complete guide to searching award space on Roame.travel

What it does : Displays award seat availability on long-haul, international flights

What it costs : Free for the basic version and $9.99 monthly for the Pro version

travel award 2024

Seats.aero searches for award space every few hours and provides results for the next few months. It's one of the best ways to search for Lufthansa's first-class award space, as it's generally only available to Star Alliance partners shortly before departure.

The Pro version allows you to search up to a year in advance on longer routes, set up unlimited alerts and receive SMS notifications when award availability is located.

Reward Flight Finder

What it does : Searches for Avios award availability with British Airways

What it costs : Free for basic searches; paid subscriptions start at 3.33 British pounds (about $4) per month

travel award 2024

The Reward Flight Finder app and website certainly do not have all the bells and whistles or amount of airlines as other services, but if your points and miles earning is restricted to only Avios and you're a British Airways loyalist, it could be all you need.

As you'd expect, you simply need to set your departure and arrival points and hit "Search Now," then the app will show you an overview of redemptions throughout the year.

The free plan allows for three economy seat searches a day and one alert every 24 hours. Silver Membership costs just 3.33 pounds (about $4) per month and provides unlimited searches across all cabins, worldwide map searches and up to five hourly alerts. The highest tier, Gold Membership, costs 5.83 pounds (about $7.50) and comes with all the Silver Membership features, plus up to 20 instant alerts and additional points pricing insights.

This is an incredibly basic app, but if you're just starting out in the points and miles world and you're happy to only focus on Avios, it could prove an easy entryway into award redemption planning.

What it does : Checks flight award availability based on your itinerary and preferred airline

What it costs : Free for five economy award availability searches per day; Premium subscription plans with unlimited searches start at $3.32 per month

travel award 2024

SeatSpy is a simple-to-use website that checks for award availability across different airlines, including Air France, American Airlines, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Etihad Airways, KLM, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Swiss Airlines, United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic.

Simply select your airline, departure and end destination airports and hit "Search" to see availability across the next 12 months.

SeatSpy is free to use if you're only searching for economy availability and can stick to a five-search limit. Where the product really shines, however, is in its premium subscriptions.

The entry-level subscription, Premium, costs $3.32 per month and allows unlimited searches across all fares and up to four availability alerts across email, WhatsApp and Telegram. It also includes AwardWallet integration so you can track how many points you have to redeem.

The most expensive subscription, First Class, costs $8.33 per month and includes everything in the Premium plan, plus unlimited alerts at a more regular frequency. "Experience alerts" for hotel rewards are also currently in beta testing.

Both subscriptions offer a "Where Can I Go" search feature, which will show you all the destinations with award availability from your departure airport on the dates you select to travel.

It may have few features when compared to other services on this list, but in terms of simplicity, it's a great site, especially if you're looking at Europe-based airlines.

ExpertFlyer

What it does : Finds real-time seat availability and award flight availability

What it costs : Free for basic membership; at least $4.99 per month for paid memberships

travel award 2024

ExpertFlyer (owned by TPG parent company Red Ventures) has one free and two paid membership tiers. The free membership allows you to view real-time seat availability for your upcoming flights. You can also set alerts for aisle, window or exit row seats, two seats together or specific seat numbers so you know when the seat you want opens up.

ExpertFlyer's Basic paid plan ($4.99 per month) offers more functionality to search for flight availability, including award and upgrade availability for various routes. You can set up to four simultaneous seat alerts, but you are limited to 250 searches per month.

travel award 2024

ExpertFlyer's Premium plan ($9.99 per month or $99.99 per year) offers more flexibility in terms of flight search options. You'll enjoy unlimited searches, up to 200 simultaneous alerts and the ability to set up aircraft change alerts and seat alerts.

ExpertFlyer also has a mobile app for seat alerts.

Google Flights

What it does : Finds flight schedules and prices, with several filtering options, for most major airlines

travel award 2024

Google Flights is your one-stop shop for finding the best flight for your schedule and budget.

You can search flight schedules and pricing across most major airlines and sort results based on price, duration, number of stops, fare class and airlines, among other options. You can also set flight price alerts or only enter your departure city before using the interactive map to choose your destination based on current pricing.

travel award 2024

Google Flights does not display points pricing, but that doesn't mean it can't help you find award space. You'll still have to book directly through the airline, but you can save valuable search time by narrowing down your options through Google Flights first.

For example, if you have a bank of points and miles with a Star Alliance, Oneworld or SkyTeam partner airline, you can filter search results by alliance to see routing options. Or, you may find a nearby airport with better pricing that you wouldn't have searched for otherwise.

Bottom line

The great thing about all of these tools is that they can be used together to find award flights and hotel availability for free nights.

For example, start with the TPG App to learn about how to earn the most points for your purchases. Then, use a site like Point.me to find award flight availability or StayWithPoints for award hotel stay availability.

No matter which combination of sites and apps you use, you'll find that they take the guesswork out of award redemptions and put you on the fast track to becoming an expert in redeeming points and miles for your 2024 travels.

Forbes Travel Guide’s 2024 Star Award Winners By Forbes Travel Guide Editor Jennifer Kester

February 7, 2024

travel award 2024

Following the pandemic, travelers flocked to big, iconic destinations, like Paris, Rome and the Maldives. While those destinations will always have their allure, vacationers are now seeking out more meaningful trips where they can embark on once-in-a-lifetime experiences, like a safari. They also are booking trips to smaller metropolitan areas, cities rich with culture, gastronomy and activities but without the crowds.

Forbes Travel Guide ’s 2024 Star Awards reflect these trending tastes among travelers. For the 66th annual list of the best hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruises, FTG explored destinations offering meaningful experiences as well as smaller U.S. cities that are often overlooked. The awards also expanded to new destinations, including Azerbaijan, Curacao, Iceland, Kenya, Sardinia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

FTG compiles its ratings using an objective, independent and data-driven process. Incognito inspectors pose as everyday guests and stay at hotels, board cruises, receive spa services and dine at fine restaurants around the world. They test some 900 exacting standards—such as whether a room is designed to promote sleep quality or whether the food-and-beverage choices support a guest’s well-being—emphasizing exceptional service, which accounts for 70 percent of a property’s rating. Newer standards focus on the guest experience, such as ensuring “cocktails are dynamically interesting and photogenic” and even asking if the inspector would “readily recommend this property to others.” The remaining 30 percent comes from the quality and condition of the facilities. Finally, inspectors are now required to reflect on whether there was great value in the experience.

See the complete list of 2024 Star Awards winners here , and learn more about the newest additions to the collection below.

Great Gains in the Middle East

The Middle East emerged as the region with the most new Five-Star awards. Waldorf Astoria Kuwait won the top honor for both its art-deco-influenced hotel and its 13,560-square-foot spa . Talise Spa at Jumeirah Messilah Beach Hotel & Spa in Kuwait also received Five Stars for its water-themed haven. Over in Qatar, established local favorite Four Seasons Hotel Doha and newcomer Raffles Doha earned Five-Star ratings.

For the second consecutive year, Macau held onto its grip as the city with the most Five-Star hotels in the world—it clocks in at 22 with the new addition of Paiza Lofts , an all-suite, French-themed hotel inside The Parisian Macao . But Dubai gave a strong showing, logging more new Five-Star hotels than any other location worldwide: Address Beach Resort , home to the world’s tallest infinity pool; Armani Hotel Dubai , a stylish designer stay inside the Burj Khalifa; Atlantis, The Royal , a new architectural feat; The Ritz-Carlton, Dubai , a family-friendly oceanfront oasis; and The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm , a gilded getaway with a rooftop of destination dining, pushed Dubai’s Five-Star hotel tally to 12.

Several Dubai restaurants also made their debut on the 2024 list. Armani/Ristorante Dubai , which serves sophisticated Italian fare overlooking the Dubai Fountain, and Stay by Yannick Alléno , a French institution at One&Only The Palm , earned Four-Star accolades.

travel award 2024

A Sense of Adventure

As travelers seek out more once-in-a-lifetime adventures, there are more luxurious options than ever. Rwanda debuted on the list with two Five-Star winners: One&Only Gorilla’s Nest , a basecamp in the foothills of the Virunga Mountains for gorilla treks, and One&Only Nyungwe House , a retreat on a tea plantation close to Nyungwe Forest National Park.

For those who want to get closer to the animals, stay with the long-necked residents at Nairobi’s Four-Star Giraffe Manor —and don’t miss breakfast with them. Meanwhile, Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club will take guests on guided safaris at the nearby Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy.

Adventurous travelers can also find a safari at sea aboard the Viking Neptune or the Four-Star Seven Seas Splendor , which offer Arctic expeditions along the shores of countries like Iceland and Norway, with possible polar bear sightings along the way. And for the ultimate around-the-world adventure, opt for the Viking Sky , which covers up to 37 countries in 180 days.

Triple Five-Star Standouts

Several hotels joined the elite ranks of the triple Five-Stars, a group of 15 properties that earned the highest rating for three different outlets under its roof (typically, it’s a hotel, restaurant and spa that earn the Five Stars). The Ritz-Carlton, Grand Cayman is the first property in the Caribbean to attain triple Five-Star status. Sprawled across 144 acres along Seven Mile Beach, the resort earned the top rating along with its Blue by Eric Ripert , a seafood-focused restaurant from the celebrated chef, and The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Grand Cayman , a 20,000-square-foot ultra-modern sanctuary.

Stateside, Rosewood Miramar Beach in Montecito, California, garnered triple Five-Star recognition with Sense, A Rosewood Spa at Miramar Beach , which features treatments using extraordinary local plants and flowers, and Caruso’s , a Southern Italian fine-dining spot overlooking the ocean. An hour from Washington, D.C., Salamander Middleburg gives travelers a luxurious place to stay in Virginia’s horse and wine country, with Harrimans Grill (which serves seasonal Southern cuisine) and the state’s only Five-Star spa on its 340 pastoral acres.

travel award 2024

The Only Five-Star Hotel Brand

Montage Big Sky , an alpine ski retreat in Southwestern Montana that opened in 2021, picked up its inaugural top rating. The win marked a Five-Star sweep for Montage Hotels & Resorts across its seven properties, giving it the title of the world’s only all-Five-Star hotel brand. The Montage collection spans from Bluffton, South Carolina , to Los Cabos with a strong presence on the West Coast with properties in Sonoma , Laguna Beach and Park City, Utah .

The U.S.-based company is a longtime luxury hospitality purveyor—it celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023 and boasts the longest-running Five-Star spa. California’s Spa Montage Laguna Beach was the first spa to earn the Five-Star distinction in 2005 and has maintained the rating ever since.

The Rise of Smaller Cities

One of the biggest travel trends for 2024 is the surge of smaller metro areas in the United States that are ready for larger crowds. In Nashville, JW Marriott Nashville lures them in with chef Michael Mina’s Bourbon Sky Lounge, the city’s highest rooftop restaurant and bar. Conrad Nashville caters to those who prioritize well-being with Wellness Rooms that come with a Peloton bike, an Echelon Reflect Fitness Mirror, free weights and a healthy minibar.

Elsewhere in the South, The Charleston Place reigns as Charleston’s grande dame, but the boutique hotel is forward-looking with seasonal offerings like a dream concierge for better sleep and a book butler who works with a local bookstore.

And as New Orleans gets ready for Mardi Gras, there are other reasons to celebrate the Crescent City. Two properties snagged new Four-Star awards: Four Seasons Hotel New Orleans , with restaurants from famed local chefs Donald Link and Alon Shaya and the glittering Chandelier Bar, and The Ritz-Carlton Spa, New Orleans , the largest spa in the city is a bathed-in-gray refuge with locally inspired treatments like the Voodoo Ritual.

travel award 2024

R&R MVPs

For those who scour FTG’s Star Awards list for stunning beach getaways, there are plenty of newly minted Five-Star hotels, including the private island hideaway Hurawalhi Island Resort and eco-friendly LUX* South Ari Atoll in the Maldives; newly renovated LUX* Belle Mare and tropical paradise Royal Palm Beachcomber Luxury in Mauritius; art-driven La Casa de la Playa and sleek, modern Nizuc Resort & Spa in Mexico; and exclusive all-suite Mandarin Oriental, Canouan in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Well-being continues to be a priority for travelers. Those seeking to recharge physically and mentally can check out new Five-Star spas like The St. Regis Spa Chicago , which opened in the world’s third-tallest building last year; The Spa at Seafire in Grand Cayman, where guests can unwind in a mosaic hammam; The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Shenzhen , a 68th-floor haven that blends Eastern and Western therapies; Evian Spa at Palace Hotel Tokyo , a unique facility from the mineral water brand; and SpaHalekulani Okinawa , also in Japan, that draws from Okinawan and Hawaiian traditions for its bliss-inducing treatments.

In the year 2024, the travel sector is distinguished by its integration of innovative technology, steadfast commitment to sustainability, and the crafting of personalised experiences. Advances such as automated bookings and biometric technology are simplifying travel, while the fusion of business with leisure, known as “bleisure,” meets the contemporary traveller’s need for comprehensive trip experiences. The emphasis on sustainability is stronger than ever, urging a shift towards greener travel alternatives and the exploration of less traditional travel periods. Personalised experiences are in high demand, highlighting the importance of authentic engagement with destinations. Methodology

All nominees are researched

The EU Business News team work hard in identifying great businesses, driving many of the nominations themselves. We also encourage external nominations from the subscribers of the magazine, online visitors, social media followers, clients and wider circulation. Nominating parties are invited to put forward either their own business or third-party companies whom they hold in high regard.

Creating the shortlist

All nominees are formally requested to accept their nomination. Should any firm or individual decline at this point, they are simply taken out of the running. Those who formally accept are given the opportunity to submit additional supporting information to cement their nomination. Although there is no obligation to complete and supply material, we have found that many nominees value this stage, in the process, as much as our research team do.

Evaluating the shortlisted nominees

Our dedicated research team will assess all information presented to them. The team gather information independently from a variety of publicly accessible sources, which are assessed alongside any material supplied by a nominating party or the nominee themselves. The research team casts their final judgment, based on various criteria such as: business performance, longevity, business growth (either sustained or rapid), any significant innovations or feedback from stakeholders.

How winners are determined

Once winners are selected, they are personally notified before any public announcement is made, allowing time for any communications throughout the wider business and the coordination of marketing strategies. Unfortunately, not everyone can be a winner; however, all who take part are encouraged to come back next year. Once the press embargo is lifted, details of our award winners will be made public via the website, award winners’ magazine and subscriber newsletter.

Sharing the exciting news

We are prepared to offer a range of promotional packages and items to winners of a EU Business News award, which vary from inclusion in the free-of-charge winners’ directory, to trophies, content in our magazine and on our website.

We encourage all winners to publicly announce their win independently in order to gain maximum exposure for their win. Announcements via company websites, social media, via publicly released press releases, and through local and national press are all great ways of maximising the exposure which can be gained from such a great achievement. If you have need of further advice, on how to publicise your win, please feel free to get in touch. We are happy to assist our clients with their needs.

Team Photo

The Nomination Team can assist with answering any queries that you have regarding a nomination, or the process involved in taking part in one of our award programmes.

Please get in touch with us via email or over the phone if you have any questions - we are happy to help!

Updated on: May 14, 2024 / 4:04 PM EDT / CBS News

This year is expected to be one of the busiest travel years in nearly two decades, with about 43.8 million people expected to travel at least 50 miles, according to AAA.

Joy Noelle Balanag booked her vacation months ago, hoping to beat the potentially record-breaking summer rush.

"I definitely am excited for this travel season. 2024 feels just like almost a breath of fresh air," she told CBS News. "I do plan on traveling on airplanes. I do plan on taking my car. Just, like, seeing where this summer season takes me."

Balanag won't be alone. This Memorial Day weekend, AAA is expecting a nearly 5% bump in airline travel over last year and United Airlines alone is planning to fly more than half a million people a day from May 23 through May 28, which would be the airline's busiest Memorial Day weekend ever. Delta is expecting 3 million passengers total over that same stretch, a 5% increase for the airline from 2023. American Airlines said it's preparing for 3.9 million customers over the long Memorial Day weekend.

Most travelers will drive that weekend, however, with AAA predicting a record 38.4 million people will hit the road. That's a 4% increase from last year. Gas prices are similar to where they were last year, up about 8 cents a gallon nationally compared to last Memorial Day weekend.

"It goes back to that bucket list, YOLO, you only live once mentality, Aixa Diaz of AAA told CBS News. "A lot of people are now going, 'You know what? Let's not take those trips we always take with our families. Let's get a little bit more adventurous.'"

One of the fastest-growing travel options since the COVID-19 pandemic is cruising.

The industry is expecting a new record high of nearly 35 million passengers this year, according to the Cruise Lines International Association. For the thousands on board the Carnival Firezne cruise ship's inaugural sold-out sailing, which began in late April, vacation season started early.

Passenger Jeanine Stage of Arizona told CBS News what she likes best about cruising is, "That you get to go to multiple destinations and you unpack your suitcase once."

"You got food, entertainment, even the casino, if you're into that, there's shows," she said.

All told, AAA is predicting 2024 will finish just narrowly behind 2005 as the busiest Memorial Day travel weekend since it began keeping track in 2000.

AAA expects the busiest time on the roads will be from noon to 7 p.m. on the Thursday and Friday before Memorial Day. United Airlines said that Thursday will be its busiest of the holiday weekend.

Among the top destinations this year: Florida, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Denver.
