Tour#1 Sunrise Lava Boat Tour 2 Hour Tour, Check in 5:00AM

Hear, See and Feel the heat as Volcano Kilauea pours molten lava into the sea. As the early morning golden sunlight rays warm the lava covered coastline, the ultimate lava viewing unfolds right before your eyes. Our experienced crew founded Lava Boat Tours on this very tour due to the fact that the Sunrise Lava Adventure Tours are the best for lava, wind, weather, & swell conditions. When he says your gonna get wet, it's no joke! Everything in Hawaii is expensive, this is a front row seat to main event. We did sunrise tour, seeing the glow from far away is impressive. Bring a change of underwear for the ride back. Thanks Shane 👍😁👍 Read more Written August 21, 2023
  • Trek614732 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Don't use this company My husband went with Kalpana ocean tours and Lava Ocean tours. Kalpana was great. Lava ocean was so bad it made my blood boil. I was so disappointed in the guides. They were rude, and just ruined the whole journey. We were in front of the line to get good seats, and sat up in the front. After everyone else sat down, they told us our kids couldn't handle it and made us move. Our short children (and us) were then left with sitting in the middle of the boat and between adults. Fine for us, but the kids couldn't see anything. No compassion. It's a cattle boat. Read more Written June 24, 2019
  • PhilJR70 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Lava Ocean Entry A truly amazing experience to see lava flowing in to the ocean. We did this trip in mid August, about 10 days after Fissure 8 stopped producing lava. However, it took a month for the lava in the channels to make its way to the ocean so we still saw plenty of activity. The crew were very informative, and provided context and background to the eruption. Read more Written March 17, 2019
  • Jac M 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Beautiful place to watch Lava Flow We did have to get up very early in the morning to meet the people who drove us to the boat dock. It was very dark. But it was most enjoyable ride out to the lava flow. I must tell you if you are prone to seasickness you may want to take precautions. But once you get to the lava flow it is something you will always remember it is something of awe Read more Written September 25, 2018

  • Florence L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Whoua You take the boat near Suisan in Hilo and after quite a long ride you can see the volcano lava. We took the 5.30 pm tour and I think that as the sun goes down it’s the best time to see the lava entering the ocean. This tour is great because the boat turns many time to let you see. Around 40 personnes on the tour and the pilot and the 2 co-pilots are nice. They explain things and take pictures of you. Worth the price. Read more Written August 27, 2018
  • LP0307 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles 25th anniversary trip Unforgettable once in a lifetime experience! Went on a 4 AM trip w/ very calm conditions. Captain Rick and his friendly crew took us to see about 6-7 spots where lava was flowing. Very dramatic to see it in the dark but got better video and pictures once the sun started to peek through. It's about ~1 hour to get to where the lava is/might be flowing, vessel stays about and hour for the viewing and picture taking, then careens back to port for 3rd hour. Please mind the tour operators' recommendations for what to wear, what to bring, how to pack what you bring and who should/should not take this excursion. It's still a bumpy ride even on calm days - this is not your New England whale watch in a lux catamaran out of Boston harbor. Pros: Vessel departed and returned on time. Crew was friendly and gave tips on taking pictures at night. I also give the crew a shout out for enforcing the rules on passengers who do not follow them! Recommend the 4 AM trip if you want to catch a beautiful sunrise that even my cynical teenager was impressed by. I also actually enjoyed the ride enough on the way back that I would've fallen asleep if the back of the seats were high enough for me to lean my head back on Cons: Price/refund policies seem harsh. I totally get that the crew takes a risk every time they do this, but the price tag really makes you think very hard how badly you want to take this trip. Tour operator needs to be more clear that the meeting place is actually a sidewalk by some portable restrooms in Wailoa Harbor. Read more Written August 18, 2018
  • Mark-Anthony J 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Never Again Pros The woman who picks up the phone line and speaks to customers was helpful. We saw the fissures of the volcano in the ocean and got a few good pics. The guys who work on the boat speaking to passengers are nice. Cons: 1. The tour was advertised for a 4:30am start. Check-in was from 3:30-3:45 and we arrived at 3:50 and was told the boat left as we were late. We were told we should have read the instructions via email and arrive early and that they tried to phone us. I made them aware that I never received a call and that we were on the road for the last 2hrs - starting at 1:30am. The next day we were told that they don’t phone international numbers which is the reason I never received a call. After driving 2 hrs from Kona, we had to drive 2 hrs back and return the next day for a 4:30am tour which meant we were back on the road at 1am. 2. The man checking us in was arrogant, lacked customer service and was rude. He showed no empathy for our situation. Whilst we appreciated that they put us on the next mrng tour, to not wait 5 mins and make an attempt to contact an international number was beyond disbelief. He went on to repeat that the instructions sent via email state check-in times and was not sympathetic, empathetic, and needs to be replaced with those on the boat who had better customer service or change his overall disposition. Sadly, I think he was the owner. 3. The next day when we came to the tour, the tour left at 3:55am. I was very upset because clearly they leave late and early inconsistently without any regard to customers. It would have been great if they would have left this time yesterday as the safety briefing is just brief and can be written down and handed out before you suit or re-arranged all together to be more efficient. 4. It was amazing to see the volcano however, for an active volcano, the boat does get very close to the fissures. It’s great for pictures but at times it feels that you’re not at a safe distance if something goes wrong which has happened or could happen at any minute. 5. Life jackets apparently are at the front of the boat tucked away somewhere however, all parties should wear this when boarding due to the state of the area and the active volcano at a minimum. Additionally, the boat hits some hard waves at times and whilst they advertise that those with back issues etc should not ride, due to water and the boat conditions, and unforeseen circumstances (such as a volcano explosion) everyone boarding should wear a life jacket. Recommendations - Do not market a tour at one time and leave at another and be consistent with your ‘waiting window’The tour time should be changed to 3:30 vs 4:30am or an hr earlier and the company policy revised. based on your company’s policy It’s false advertisement. Advertise for 3:30, send waivers electronically earlier and still do the briefing but maximize timing and continue on the boat or in route to the volcano. Overall more efficiency and a more robust business model is needed here. - Be consistent when you leave early or a little late as you can make up time on the one hr ride to the volcano. People are spending a considerable amount of money and time getting to the location and more empathy and sympathy would go a long way and help your business and customer service model. Please put on better manners particularly within a customer service business. - For the price of the tour, which was over $500, the customer service is appalling and needs to be reviewed with immediacy or someone else to replace the guy who I believe is the owner. - The distance that the boat from the fissures needs to be replaced-explored and monitored. It’s no wonder a magma rock or ball crashed into the boat a few weeks back and harmed a passenger. In light of the unpredictability of the volcano, they need to reconsider this. Health and safety may want to review this on the island. - The start time should be reconsidered so that you get to the volcano at sunrise vs before as your pictures are wasted due to the poor lighting. - The information told about the volcano on the tour is ok but if the team were more experienced geologists or understood more about the science of volcanoes, it would be more interesting and make up for long gaps of silence on the boat. The information provided can be easily grasped via the news or google. Growing up near the volcano is different to understanding the science of one and providing extra content to feel you’re getting your money’s worth. - People from all over the world are travelling to see this volcano safely, please invest in Skype or an international plan where you can text and phone international customers particularly if you are leaving without them on your tour. There’s too much money and time involved in prepping for this activity that a lack of investment in skype, text or international phone options is unacceptable in 2018 when modern options exist, some without additional cost. This is mere professional courtesy. - Do not lie. Do not say you phoned us when you didn’t despite the circumstance. It makes me question the company’s ethic. Based on the above, I wouldn’t recommend unless the areas above were addressed. Look for a more professional, customer service oriented and safe tour company. Never again. • goodricm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome experience, best way to see the lava flows I was in Hawaii during the first week of August, 2018. The historic lava flows had subsided by this point, but I had to see them nonetheless. I went on a sunset tour and was not disappointed. The tour was a great experience from start to finish. The boat was easy to find and there was ample free parking less than a block from the dock. The captain and crew were very frank about the hazards of the ride and very decent about giving everyone the best but safest experience possible. The boat ride was very fun, much like an amusement ride. The boat is fairly small but has a decent amount of power that rocketed it over 20 knots and had it skipping across the surf, which is fairly large on the southeast side of the island. I rode with my 12 year old son in the very front and it was a bit rough, but we had fun and neither of us got sick. The view from the front was amazing! We arrived at the lava flow after a little over an hour and could see, feel, and smell the lava. This is the best way to see it as you just can't do this from the air. We went to what was left of Kapoho Bay. As the lava flow had subsided in intensity, we were able to get very close to it. We even pulled into a cove with an old boat ramp and viewed the devastation up close. We were able to see red lava streams from the moment we entered Kapoho bay. The visibility of lava improved significantly as the sun set and it got darker. The lava was actually more visible when I went then several weeks earlier as there was much more smoke with the higher intensity flows. For future tours, expect similar conditions as the "normal" lava flows are similar to what I observed. However, it is likely that you will have to travel further as the lava flows prior to the 2018 eruption tended to be further west than Kapoho Bay. Thus, you will have a longer ride and probably a bit less time on scene. They shoot for about 30 minutes of lava viewing though, so you will still have a good experience. $250 a pop is a bit pricey, but worth it to experience the lava the way you can from a small boat. The cheapest helicopter tour that overflies the lava flows is $200-300 and you will not be on scene as long, get as close, or feel and smell the lava the way you can from the boats. • EnglandTraveladdict 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Understand this is not a relaxing trip I’m keeping this review simple. This experience is a miserable three hour experience and I believe most would agree. Your tossed on horribly rough seas traveling at break neck speeds while being pelted with rain and salt water. Toss is the few guests around you throwing up and the smaller child crying for their life and it makes your “vacation” feeling go away quick. You may see lava. We did and it was really cool. Would I recommend this trip or ever do it again... NEVER! Read more Written August 12, 2018

The tour was canceled twice for the bad wether of Hector tropical storm. But the safety first. The guys in charge professional and helpful. Everybody was in a seat depending on the age. • Anntnz 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Viewing from afar Disappointing how far away, from the volcano, the boat is now since the incident that happened in July. Although it is amazing to see the volcano from afar, I no longer think the gruelling boat trip, and the cost, is worth it. Read more Written August 10, 2018

The Best Volcano Tours in Hawaii

By Hawaii.com Team

Facebook

If you’re looking to see lava, your best (and safest) bet is to book a Hawaii volcano tour. The best ways to see lava on the Big Island are by boat, by helicopter or by hiking across the dry lava fields. Keep in mind that, because you’re dealing with mother nature, lava viewings are not guaranteed and certain safety risks do exist. Check with tour operators or call 808-985-6000 for recorded updates of volcanic activity. That being said, here are the best volcano tours in Hawaii to get you safely to Pele’s red hot molten lava!

Lava Ocean Tours

Lava Ocean Tours will take you out on the water in the only US Coast Guard inspected lava boat, the LAVAONE, which offers the Big Island’s best lava boat tour! Get up close and feel the heat and hear the sizzle of molten lava flowing into the ocean. The best time of day to witness this wonder is early morning before sunrise or at sunset. However, no matter the time of day, you will be watching as a new earth is formed on the Big Island. Passengers must be 4-75 years old, under 250 pounds, and in good health.

Hawaii Volcano Tours by Helicopter

Paradise Helicopters> offers a ride over the most active parts of the Kilauea volcano. This 40-50 minute ride will have you feeling the heat and then cooling down as you fly over some of the island’s magical waterfalls. This Big Island volcano tour is offered with or without doors!

Hike to See the Lava Flow

Hawaii Forest & Trail offers a guided 2-3 mile hike of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park’s most dynamic terrain with a National Park Certified Guide. Along with the hike, you will also explore a private lava tube complete with bright yellow and gold microbial mats. Guides provide gear, food, and drinks as well as insights into the history and legends of the volcano.

Volcano Air Tour from Kapalua, Maui

If you’re staying on the island of Maui and looking for a tour that will take you to see the volcano, check out Mokuele Air Tours departing from Kapalua, Maui. Though the highlight is the southern lava tubes of Hawaii Island where lava often flows into the sea, you will also get to see picturesque parts of Maui, cross the Alenuihaha channel and fly over stunning coastlines and mountains on Hawaii Island.

Not All Hawaii Volcano Tours Will Take You to See Lava

There are a lot of volcano tours on Hawaii Island, but not all of them will take you to see the lava flowing into the ocean. Most volcano tours will take you sightseeing around the island and on a trip through Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. But, this does not necessarily mean you will see the lava flow.

Big Island Volcano Day Trip from Another Island

The source of lava is the Kilauea volcano which is located on the southeastern coast of Hawaii Island, also known as the Big Island. If you’re visiting Hawaii but staying on an island other than Big Island, it might be worth it to book an inter-island flight over for a day trip. The two main airports on the island are the Kona International Airport (KOA) and the Hilo International Airport (ITO). If you’re flying to the Big Island and renting a car, keep in mind that the Hilo Airport is closer to the lava than the Kona Airport is. However, it’s still about an hour drive to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park from Hilo, so be sure to get an early start and plan accordingly. Some tours will offer airport pick-up, just check your tour details or call the company.

If you’re heading to Hawaiʻi’s Big Island, then one of the first questions you may have is, ‘Where is the lava? I want to see lava! Wait, or is it magma?’ First, yes, typically it’s lava you’re looking for – lava is anything that’s erupted from the volcano (to the surface), and it comes in two flavors, Pahoehoe and A`a. You can read more about the two lava types on our  Hawaiʻi Geology  page. If it’s still within the volcano, it’s known as magma.

September 2021 – June 2022 Eruption Update

Lava has returned to halemaumau crater in hvnp.

For the first time since May 2021, ACTIVE flows are now occurring inside Halemaumau Crater at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.  See our ‘ What’s Happening Now ‘ section below for current information.

Locating the Lava Flows

Now, to answer the question of ‘ where .’ Well, the answer to that question depends on the mood of Pele (the Hawaiʻian Volcano Goddess). And Madame Pele is very unpredictable.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is open 24 hours a day, so your chance to see glowing lava (from near or far) is pretty good when the volcano is actively erupting (it’s periodically erupting only at the summit in Halemaumau currently), especially when it’s dark. Just look for the red glow. As always, the Park Rangers at the entry station are your best guide to current conditions – we advise all visitors to check in with them before exploring the park.

Ultimately, in our opinion, even if you don’t get to see any flowing lava in person, which you might not currently, Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and the Big Island are well worth the time.

What’s Happening Now?

September 2021 – june 2022 eruption.

Kilauea volcano, on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi, is currently erupting at its summit – flooding the floor of Halemaumau Crater with fresh lava flows. Current conditions are additionally included below.

Eruption Timeline

The latest eruption within Halemaumau Crater started about 20 minutes after 3 p.m. Wednesday – September 29, 2021; currently, all lava is confined within the crater. The eruption came after a day of increased earthquake activity at the volcano and summit.

The eruption is currently confined to Halemaumau crater, within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.  HVO does not see any indication of activity migrating elsewhere on Kilauea volcano  and expects the eruption to remain confined to the summit region.

The last eruption at Kilauea ended in May (see below) after an explosive beginning five months earlier in December 2020. It is unclear how long the current eruption will continue. Kilauea summit eruptions over the past 200 years have lasted from less than a day to more than a decade. This ongoing eruption is similar to the most recent Kilauea eruption, which was also confined to Halemaʻumaʻu crater and generated a lava lake; the most recent eruption lasted approximately five months, from December 2020 to May 2021.

Current Conditions Summary *

If you’re currently on the Big Island, this is a great time to witness the glow of an eruption up close on the summit; as usual, nighttime viewing is best. Dress accordingly as it’s 4,000+ ft in elevation at the summit of Kilauea and it can get fairly chilly after dark.  Below we’ve also covered  What you can see  during both the daytime and at night.

Activity Summary:  Current conditions, updated daily, can be found  on the USGS site .

*Activity Summary, Summit Observations, and Lava Lake Observations courtesy of the USGS and/or NPS

What can you see in the day?

  • Visitors arriving at HVNP during the day can view the volcanic gas and steam from the eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Koaʻekea (white-tailed tropicbirds) are often observed flying above the crater.
  • The  eruption is visible  from  Kaluapele , the  summit caldera , along open areas of the rim.  Lava fountains are only visible  from the south caldera rim near  Keanakākoʻi Overlook . Avoid crowds and traffic by visiting this overlook during the day.
  • Weather conditions such as fog and rain may obscure eruption views at any time. Be prepared.

What can you see at night?

  • he massive lava lake consisting of molten rock casts an incredible reddish-orange glow into the surrounding dark sky. The glow reflects onto the gas plume wafting out of the volcano, and to any clouds above Halemaʻumaʻu crater. The jagged crater walls are additionally illuminated, showcasing the scars dating to the 2018 summit collapse.
  • The bursting spatter cone and lava lake is visible from the south rim along Old Crater Rim Drive after a moderate hike. For easier viewing, the lava lake is occasionally visible from Kīlauea Overlook, and along Crater Rim Trail near that area.
  • Bring a flashlight during your visit! Weather conditions such as fog and rain may obscure eruption views.

Potential Hazards:  This new eruption at Kilauea’s summit is occurring within a closed area of Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. Therefore, high levels of volcanic gas are the primary hazard of concern, as this hazard can have far-reaching effects downwind. Large amounts of volcanic gas—primarily water vapor (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2), and sulfur dioxide (SO2)—are continuously released during the eruptions of Kilauea Volcano. As SO2 is released from the summit, it reacts in the atmosphere to create the visible haze known as vog (volcanic smog) that has been observed downwind of Kīlauea. Click here to also view the latest Vog report for the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

Follow HVNP for additional updates

This situation is rapidly evolving and the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Observatory will continue to issue statements when more information is available to the public. For now, you can receive ongoing eruption updates by following the social media accounts of the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter).

  • View the  live cameras  located at the Kilauea summit.

Lava returns to Halemaumau Crater

September 2021 – june 2022 eruption.

As noted above, this eruption began on September 29, 2021. We will continue to post updates on this page, as the eruption continues. This section will be updated accordingly.

December 2020 – May 2021 Eruption

After the huge changes that occurred with the 2018 eruption and subsequent summit collapse, some had speculated that Kilauea would not erupt for a significant period of time. Pele had other plans, however.

At approximately 9:30 p.m. HST on Sunday – December 20, 2020, the USGS Hawaiʻian Volcano Observatory (HVO) detected a new glow within the Halemaumau crater at the summit of Kilauea Volcano.

Within Halemaumau, an eruption had commenced at Kilauea’s summit caldera. Previously, as noted below the caldera had been filling with a green-ish water lake, but that quickly disappeared, as lava has once again made an appearance inside of the crater. Within one week, what had been a history-making lake of water was replaced by a nearly 600-foot deep lake of molten lava.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake additionally hit about an hour after the volcano began erupting. By the morning of 12/21/20, two of the three initial fissure vents on the wall of the Halemaumau crater were feeding a growing lava lake.

The eruption paused in late May 2021, after several months of activity in the Halemaumau crater.

Development of Water Lake in 2019

On August 1, 2019, USGS Hawaiʻian Volcano Observatory (HVO) scientists confirmed a growing pond of water in the recently enlarged Halemumau crater. Initially, it appeared as small, separate turquoise ponds, but over time, the small ponds united and began to grow dramatically. For a period of time, the depth of the growing lake was increasing several inches per day. In the space of just over one year’s time, a persistent lake of lava had vanished in a dramatic collapse, only to be replaced by the first lake of water to be recorded at Kilauea in modern history.

Over the course of its relatively short lifespan, the lake grew to be approximately 160 feet (49 m) deep. That’s taller than a 10-story building, for reference. The lake also changed color due to the precipitation of iron-sulfate minerals and SO2 being dissolved into the water.

2018 East Rift Zone Eruption

Kilauea caldera has undergone a tremendous amount of change over the last decade, and prior to the eruption in December 2020, had not been very active since 2018. See the maps immediately below to get an idea of how volatile the years between 2009 and 2018 were at the park or explore this geo-narrative by the USGS about the 2018 eruption.

In the first days of May 2018, the lava lake that had existed in Halemaumau crater for almost a decade began to drain away. Magma moved from the summit of Kilauea to the Lower East Rift Zone, marked by a series of earthquakes. On May 3rd, the first fissures opened up in the subdivision of Leilani Estates and the massive eruption of 2018 began to unfold in lower Puna.

With less magma left to support the summit, the Halemaumau crater began to collapse. Every 28 hours, on average, the ground within the summit caldera of Kilauea sank with dramatic collapse events. By the end of the 2018 eruption, the Halemaumau crater had sunk by 1,600 feet (488m), and its diameter more than doubled.

Activity circa 2018 East Rift Zone Eruption

Prior to 2018, you could just as easily have witnessed lava flows chewing on Chain of Craters Road as you could view a steam plume from afar. Kilauea is a living, breathing volcano with a mind of its own.

Kilauea’s oldest lava flows are dated between 210,000 and 280,000 years ago. Those flows are considered generally young, geologically speaking, for an active volcano.

For the last one thousand years, Kilauea’s ongoing eruptions have dramatically shaped the southeast portion of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi.

The most recent 100 years of volcanic activity at Kilauea can be divided into seven distinct eruptions.

Summaries are provided below from the USGS website:

  • May 1924 explosive eruption
  • 1955 Lower East Rift Zone Eruption
  • 1959 eruption of the Kilauea Iki
  • 1960 Kapoho eruption
  • 1969-1974 Mauna Ulu Eruption
  • 2008-2018 Summit Eruption & Lava Lake
  • 1983-2018 Pu’u ‘O’o Eruption

Lava Viewing Guide

Hiking to lava.

Check  THIS SITE  for updates on lava flows and Kilauea activity. We’ve also included some maps below to generally help provide you an overview of the park and where the lava might be located during your visit. Just remember, this is an active living and breathing volcano and things regularly change, the maps are always out of date for that reason to some extent.

If  the flows have recently been near the surface within the Park and  IF  it’s safe to access (check with the Rangers), it’s pretty easy to locate the lava yourself – so don’t feel like you HAVE to join a tour to experience a lava flow. Before heading out, be sure you’ve prepared accordingly – dress appropriately with the right footwear for your adventure; be sure to keep water with you at all times, it can be easy to get dehydrated on the lava fields. Sunscreen is also your best friend on this part of the island.

As always, remember that lava flows outside the Park’s boundary are on private property and you should not explore these locations without a guide who has permission to properly access the property.

FAQs [ show ]

Q: Lava Ocean Adventures? A. We’re Hawaii’s, Big Island ocean adventure tour company. The Lava Ocean crew consists of long time Hawaii residents who have boated here in East Hawaii for years.

Q: Where do we meet for the Kilauea volcano lava tour? A. Meet at the Isaac Hale Beach Park. See driving directions below.

Q: Lava Boat Tours vs. Helicopter Volcano Tours? A. Both are great Hawaii tours it really depends on what type of volcano tours your interested in. Lava Boat Tours are geared toward the adventure seeker. We Hear the sizzle as the lava touches the sea, we Feel the molten heat , we See red hot lava & we Experience open ocean boating conditions. Helicopter volcano tours can be a good way to view the crater & lava action up the mountain with views from a 1000+ ft. If your looking to get up close to lava then volcano boat tours offer you the ultimate close up lava viewing experience with views from a 100 yards. When lava touches the sea, a plume cloud begins extending into the sky, blocking ocean lava viewing from the Helicopter & Kalapana lava viewing center. The unobstructed facing view of lava is by far the best way to view lava & a trademark of lava ocean tours. After years of lava touring when lava’s touching the sea there’s nowhere we’d rather be, then on a lava boat!

Q: Is the boat we are touring with comfortable and safe? A. Lava Ocean Adventures offers 3 of the safest most equipped lava boats. Our boat captains are United States Coast Guard licensed, our vessels are permitted through the state of Hawaii, & we carry insurance for all of our passengers. We look forward to making our Hawaii Lava Tour a part of your Big Vacation.

Q: When is the best time to view lava by boat? A. Usually the Sunrise Lava Tour is the best. Due to the golden rays of sun lighting the lava, creating a visual spectacle. On a calm night the Sunset Lava Tour can be exciting too, with vibrant lava afterglows. Then again, we have photographers that love the early Afternoon Adventure Lava Tours due to the available lighting for pictures. So take your pick lava is lava, come get it while its red hot.

Q: How long are your Kilauea Lava Boat Tours? A: Lava Boat tours generally last 1.75 – 2.5 hours depending on ocean conditions. Lava viewing on our daily scheduled Boat Lava Tour lasts approximately 45 minutes.

Q: Will I see active lava flow? A. You will truly be amazed with whatever Pele is giving us and since is unique we can guarantee your pictures of lava are one of a kind. Lava drips, explodes into the air, flows like a river, glows molten along the bench cracks, and ooze out in little to big blobs. As long as lava is flow into the sea you’ll see lava on every trip.

Q: Can you see lava during the day? A. Yes, Lava is red hot all day long. During certain flow conditions the lighting the daylight provides allows for great lit lava photos.

Q: How long has Hawaii Volcano Kilauea been erupting? A. There has been lava flowing from Kilauea’s vents for over 26 years in the Kalapana area, however lava entering the sea is a rare occurrence and only happens about 25% or less of the time. In recent years this has almost doubled with 2 out of the 3 years of lava entering the sea. We have a 99% chance of seeing lava on every trip. We are all truly blessed to have the world’s most active volcano Kilauea so accessible to us.

Q: What if we get there and there is no lava? A. There is always a chance the lava can stop flowing into the ocean at any time and has happened before. If by chance she quits over night without warning we will gladly give you a Lava Ocean Adventure Shirt or a discount on the price if we do not see red hot lava in any of it‘s forms.

Q: How rough is the water? A. Our 3 catamarans are built for open ocean conditions found here in East Hawaii. This trip is not for everyone!!! We can be out in as high as 4-6’ swells. We will not go out if the wind or sea conditions go beyond what a 4 year old can endure or if lightning or other unforeseen events prevent us from having a safe lava trip. Sometimes this decision is made right before boarding and we will give as much notice as we can, if we are going to cancel a boat trip. Again, your safety is our biggest concern.

Q: What should we bring? A. We want you to be thrilled as well as safe. You can get wet and a rain jacket will make the difference in having a better chance of keeping dry. Please bring a bag or water resistant sack to protect your important items such as: cameras, cell phones, electronics.

Q: What if I get sea sick? A. Well it does happen but no so often, we recommend you invest into an over the counter substance like Bonine or Dramamine to help with motion sickness. You know who you are! If you can, we also suggest eating a light meal an hour before your boat tour.

Q: What about the sulfur dioxide and the huge smoke cloud? A. For the most part the huge plume that you see is steam created by the lava entering the ocean. There can be sulfur dioxide in the air as well as ash and glass particles and sometimes smoke as the jungle burns. We do not enter the steam cloud, but in some cases we do have to go under the steam plume to get to the lava side of the flow. The Possibility of ash and / or volcanic particles as well as slightly acidic rain (which has about the same acidity as lemon juice) can land on the boat and passengers. There is always a chance of having an adverse reaction if you have allergies, asthma, or other breathing issues. If you have any difficulties with your lungs or skin it is best to bring a dust mask and / or any medication you may need. If we smell sulfur we move to a clean air location. Please let us know of any concerns before booking.

Q: What if I am pregnant or have back/ neck issues? A. This trip is not for you if you are pregnant or have existing back/neck issues due to rigorous ocean conditions. Ask yourself & your group If they can handle getting bumped, bounced around for 2 hours on a boat? If the answer is no, then this trip is not for you. Certain physical conditions warrant serious consideration of worst case possibilities.

Q: I thought we could just walk out and see lava? A: As of March 2008, the County of Hawaii has denied access to the lava fields due to it being EXTREMELY hazardous to your life with risks of lava benches falling into the sea occurring regularly. The Visitor lava viewing center is closed about a half a mile up the coast from the actual lava flow area.

Q: Ok, how close can we get to the lava? A: Upon arrival our approach is 200 yards away. After assessing the lava ocean entry to make sure it is possible to safely to get a closer look at the lava. Depending on the conditions of the lava flow we can be as close as 20 yards under excellent conditions. You shouldn’t need your telephoto lenses/binoculars on any of our lava volcano tours.

Hawaii (The Big Island) › Attraction

Lava ocean tours.

1 star rating

The unpredictability of Pele, at least as evidenced by the on-again, off-again lava flows into the sea from Kilauea, means it’s hard to know in advance if you’ll be able to take one of the lava-viewing tours aboard the Lava Kai catamaran (34 ft. long; 24-passenger capacity but limited to 12) or the smaller Kuewa (27 ft.; six passengers). The 2-plus-hour Sunset Volcano Boat Tour at press time offered views of lava flowing on the pali (cliff) about 6 miles away, along with closer views of volcanic features along the coast—not quite as exhilarating as seeing molten rock pour into a hissing ocean, but still adventurous, given the open waters. The tour departs from Pohoiki (Isaac Hale Beach Park) in Pahoa, as does the 6-hour Castaway Adventure snorkel/dive tour at Halape, an extremely secluded sandy beach far below the cliffs of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park; the 2 1/2-hour cruise there includes a narrated guide to the unique geological formations along the way, such as the new black-sand beach at Kalapana. Captain Shane Turpin’s fleet also has two less demanding tours offered from Hilo’s Wailoa Harbor. The 3-hour Hilo Waterfall Swim & Wildlife Tour travels along the Hamakua Coast past sea caves, black-sand beaches, abandoned sugar mills, and waterfalls, including one where you can swim in the river below it. Wildlife often include spinner dolphins and, in season, humpback whales; the latter are the focus of a separate 2-hour whale-watching tour from Hilo December through April; a hydrophone (underwater microphone) on board lets you listen to the cetaceans’ songs.

Enjoy a complementary coffee or tea and choose a malasada before heading on to explore the most beautiful black sand beach on the island.
  • Punalu‘u Black Sand Beach : One of the prettiest black sand beaches in all of the Hawaiian Islands. The jet-black volcanic glass sand here was formed from the rapid cooling of basaltic lava hitting the ocean water then shattering into tiny fragments . Your guide will keep a look out for green sea turtles and endangered hawksbill sea turtles that frequent the beach.

Latest reviews of Volcano Night Lava Viewing Tours

Didn't see the lava show, but still was amazing.

This is one of the best tour I had, the driver always take care of you even if you Re late lol. But it was an amazing experience you can meet new people and have a great time, I would do it again when I come back to ko ... more na!

Worth the money for sure!

We really enjoyed this tour. It is a long one so be prepared. But they keep you hydrated and fed. I loved the black sand beach, and the sea turtles and the stop along the shore the most. But all of the events were really ... more fun. They packed so much into one day. it was a great tour and we had a lot of fun. The picnic, the stop at the bakery, and the dinner, you were all excellent quality as well.

Great day in Hawaii!

It was a great days long adventures around the island. I would highly recommend it!

Amazing Tour Guide!

The perfect experience for first time visiting Kona! Loved the Coffee farm, black sand beach, and stargazing the most on this full-day excursion!

Fabulous Trip

This tour was the highlight of my families trip. The tour was amazing and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. He was happy to answer all of my children's questions.

MUST DO! This was a great tour - really educational and fun. Be prepared for rain, you are in the rainforest and it rains a lot. Our guide came prepared with umbrellas and rain jackets, flashlights for the lava tube, ... more water and snacks. Andre, our tour guide was amazing, experienced and incredibly knowlegable of the volcanoes, land, plants and trees, Hawaiian culture, plus more, and the history of all mentioned. He made sure we were always entertained during the approx. 8 hour trip. Would recommend shorts, closed toed shoes (sneakers fine) suntan lotion, somewhat water repellant light jacket (in case your tour does not provide).

Best Time To Go

Kona is warm and partly cloudy with moderate precipitation year-round, making it the perfect vacation spot any time of year.

Keep in mind that as people from colder states flock to Hawaii to get away from the snow, peak season on the island typically occurs from December to early spring, so these will generally be the busiest and most crowded times to visit.

Best Ways To Get Around

This seaside escape is very pedestrian-friendly, featuring a plethora of shops, restaurants, accommodations, museums, parks, and other activities in the downtown area. The Kona Trolley also offers tourists a speedy mode of transportation for getting around Kona.

However, those wanting to venture out into the Big Island to explore attractions like Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park on their own time should opt to get a rental car.

The Hawaii Island Bus Service does provide public transportation around the island, including to Volcanoes National Park.
