Marion County travel advisory downgraded, but people still urged to stay indoors

marion county travel warning

Travel restrictions may have been relaxed so that Marion County residents now can drive if they really have to, but many government offices will remain closed Tuesday because of extreme cold.

While state government is reopening, Indianapolis and Marion County offices, along with the Marion County courts, will be closed for the second day in a row. So will Indianapolis Public Schools, Indianapolis Public Library branches and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

And IndyGo again is suspending normal bus routes Tuesday "in order to help keep our customers and professional operators safe," President and CEO Mike Terry said. The transit agency still will provide prearranged Open Door service for dialysis appointments.

IndyGo says it plans to resume normal bus routes on Wednesday, though some buses may face detours and delays.

Some offices are reopening Tuesday, including state government offices at 10 a.m., officials said. Essential state employees have been asked to report at normal times. The Indiana Supreme Court, Court of Appeals and courts administration will reopen at 1 p.m.

At the U.S. District Courthouse in Downtown Indianapolis, normal court operations are set to resume – except in the federal bankruptcy court, which will remain closed Tuesday.

The partial reopening of government business follows Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard's request for businesses and schools to stay closed another day Tuesday in deference to safety.

At noon, Ballard changed the travel advisory covering Marion County from a warning to a watch. Under a warning, the highest level of advisory, traveling can be restricted to emergency workers only. Under a watch, only essential travel is recommended.

Ballard and other city officials, including Indianapolis Power & Light Vice President for Public Affairs Greg Fennig, Division of Homeland Security Chief Gary Coons, Department of Public Safety Director Troy Riggs, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Rick Hite and Public Works Director Lori Miser, held a press conference this morning at the City-County Building to provide an update on the winter storm and what to expect over the next few days.

Ballard said people are still urged to stay indoors. Temperatures are at minus 11 degrees with wind chills as low as minus 37.

He also asked businesses and schools to stay closed through Tuesday.

"I still want people to stay inside," Ballard said. "If you have to go somewhere, go ahead, but only if you really have to go."

About 400 people are staying at area shelters and about 50 are still waiting to be transported as of this morning. Ballard said that number is expected to increase throughout the day. Most of those who sought shelters are residents who lost power Sunday afternoon.

As of 5:06 p.m. today, 23,008 customers of Indianapolis Power & Light were without power, according to the utility's website. Fennig, of IPL, said some would have to wait until Thursday morning for power to be restored. He said IPL has asked about 200 additional crews to work today, including 50 from Dayton Power and Light.

"We're going after it as fast as we can," Fennig said. "Outages are spread out all over. Where there are more trees, there are more outages."

Ann Gregson, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross, which is also providing shelters across Indiana, said there's more room available.

"We will be open until power is restored and people can get back on the road," Gregson said. "If you're out of power, you need to get to safety. Don't stick it out in your house. Get to a shelter."

Residents who are staying at shelters and would like to know if power has been restored at their home can call (317) 261-8111.

Sunday's winter storm dropped 11.4 inches of snow on Indianapolis. Amanda Lee, meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Indianapolis, said that is the second highest in recorded history. The record of 12.1 inches was set in March 1906.

About 75 percent of residential neighborhoods had been plowed by late afternoon.

"It should be completely done by today," said Miser of the Department of Public Works.

The storm also resulted in nearly twice as many emergency service runs, Ballard said. The Indianapolis Fire Department has so far responded to 925 EMS runs, as well as 93 calls about downed power lines. Normally, that number is only about 500 at this time of year. The Mayor's Action Center has received 950 calls since 9 p.m. last night, most of whom were from people in need of transportation to local shelters.

The biting weather conditions require extreme care to protect from frostbite and hypothermia, said Dr. Frank Messina, an emergency medicine physician with Eskenazi Health.

Covering all body parts — hands, face and ears — and changing out of wet clothes will decrease chances of tissue damage while outside, Messina said.

Messina warned that a few minutes of exposure could lead to frostnip, an early state of frostbite.

"Common sense says to just stay inside if you don't have to go out," he said. "Check on the elderly and your neighbors."

Power outage tips

Duke Energy offers these tips if several tips for instances in which your power goes out:

> If you see downed power lines, assume they are dangerous and stay away.

> If your power goes out, check to see if your neighbors have power. If your home is the only one without power, check your circuit breakers or fuses to determine if the outage is a result of a household problem.

> If you anticipate an extended outage, consider moving yourself and your family — especially those with special needs — to an alternate location.

> Turn off lights and as many appliances and electronics as possible, including heating systems. You will help prevent circuit overload situations when your power is restored. You will also reduce the potential for damage to sensitive equipment such as computers, microwave ovens, televisions and recording devices.

> Help protect your food during a power outage by keeping your refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to maintain the cold temperature. Your refrigerator should keep food safely cold for about four hours if it is unopened. A full freezer should hold the temperature for approximately 48 hours if the door stays closed (about 24 hours if it is half full).

To help you prepare in case you face a power outage, consider these for an emergency kit:

> A flashlight with extra batteries (placed where you can find it in the dark).

> A battery-powered radio and fresh batteries.

> Canned foods that require no cooking.

> A manual can opener.

> First aid supplies.

> Extra fuses

> A battery-powered or wind-up clock.

Travel warnings issued for 2 popular Caribbean destinations

Vacation travel warnings issued for americans.

The State Departments has issued a traveler alert for two Caribbean countries that are popular stops for Florida cruise ships. Kellie Cowan reports.

TAMPA, Fla. - As the spring break travel season draws near, the State Department has issued travel warnings for both the Bahamas and Jamaica.

The warnings come as a result of increased levels of crime in the island nations.

A spike in the murder rate since the start of the year prompted a Level-2 warning for travel to the Bahamas.

While the homicides are believed to be gang-related, the State Department is warning travelers to be on alert, especially in popular destinations like Nassau and Freeport because of concerning levels of violent crime in both tourist and non-tourist areas.

"Certainly drugs, I think intertwined with this, there are certainly gang-related activities, but there's also individual criminality occurring where there have been some sexual assaults or physical assaults, where people are looking to take money, taking valuables," explained former FBI investigator William Daly.

The State Department also cautions travelers planning to stay in hotels or short-term rental properties without private security to be vigilant. Do not answer the door if you do not know who is on the other side.

The level-2 warning also specifically cautions against certain water activities in the Bahamas.

"Activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated. Watercraft  may be poorly  maintained, and  some operators may not  have safety certifications," cautions the State Department.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A blue-green algae watch continues at Lake Shawnee while there are four warnings for blue-green algae at lakes in Atchison, Harvey and Marion counties.

According to the Kansas Department of Health and Environment and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks , they have issued a public health advisory due to blue-green algae.

KDHE officials said a harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red. Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away. These toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and even skin contact. Symptoms vary depending upon the type of exposure (e.g. direct contact, ingestion, inhalation) but can include rash, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sore throat, and headache. If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae rinse the area with clean, fresh water. Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported at kdhe.ks.gov/1163 .

Active Advisories

  • Atchison County State Fishing Lake, Atchison County (Added May 17)
  • Harvey County East Lake, Harvey County
  • Marion County Lake, Marion County (Added May 17)
  • Marion Lake (Reservoir), Marion County (Added May 17)
  • Lake Shawnee, Shawnee County
  • Lovewell Lake, Jewell County (Added May 17)

KDHE officials said a Hazard status indicates that a harmful algal bloom is present, and extreme conditions exist.

When a hazard is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

  • Signage should be posted at all public access locations.
  • It is recommended that either a portion of the lake or the entire lake or zone, be closed to the public.
  • In some cases, the adjacent land should be closed as well. Actual setback distances will be determined on a site-specific basis, if necessary.
  • When partial closures (i.e., beach or cove) are issued, the remaining lake or zone area will carry a warning status.

KDHE officials indicated a Warning status indicates that conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure.  Contact with the waterbody should be avoided.

When a warning is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

  • Inhalation of spray or aerosols may be harmful.
  • Lake water is not safe to drink for pets or livestock.
  • Lake water, regardless of blue-green algae status, should never be consumed by humans.
  • Water contact should be avoided.
  • Fish may be eaten if they are rinsed with clean water and only the fillet portion is consumed, while all other parts are discarded.
  • Do not allow pets to eat dried algae.
  • If lake water contacts skin, wash with clean water as soon as possible.
  • Avoid areas of visible algae accumulation.

KDHE officials said a Watch status means that blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid areas of algae accumulation and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

When a watch is issued, KDHE recommends the following precautions be taken:

  • Water may be unsafe for humans/animals.
  • Avoid areas of algae accumulation and do not let people/pets eat dried algae or drink contaminated water.
  • Swimming, wading, skiing and jet skiing are discouraged near visible blooms.
  • Boating and fishing are safe. However, inhalation of the spray may affect some individuals. Avoid direct contact with water, and wash with clean water after any contact.
  • Clean fish thoroughly with potable water and eat fillet portion only.

KDHE officials said advisories are lifted when cell densities and toxin concentrations dissipate to levels below the Watch thresholds.

KDHE investigates publicly accessible bodies of water for blue-green algae when the agency receives reports of potential algae blooms in Kansas lakes. Based on credible field observation and sampling results, KDHE reports on potentially harmful conditions.

KDHE officials said if you observe a scum or paint-like surface on the water, small floating blue-green clumps or filaments in the water, or if the water is an opaque green, avoid contact and keep pets away. These are indications that a harmful bloom may be present. Pet owners should be aware that animals that swim in or drink water affected by a harmful algal bloom or eat dried algae along the shore may become seriously ill or die.

Marion Co. Lake, Reservoir under blue-green algae warning

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Four bodies of water in Kansas are now under blue-green algae warnings. Atchison County State Fishing Lake, Marion County Lake and Marion Lake (Reservoir) were added to the list Friday. Harvey County East Lake has been on the list for several weeks.

A warning status means conditions are unsafe for human and pet exposure and contact should be avoided.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) said blue-green algae toxins can be absorbed by ingestion, inhalation of aerosols and skin contact. Symptoms from exposure can vary from rash, vomiting and diarrhea to fever, sore throat, and headache.

The KDHE and KDWP said a harmful algal bloom (HAB) may look like foam, scum or paint floating on the water and be colored blue, bright green, brown or red.

“Blooms can develop rapidly; if the water appears suspicious or there is decaying algae on the shore, avoid contact and keep pets away,” said the agencies.

Watches have also been issued for Lake Shawnee in Shawnee County and Lovewell Lake in Jewell County. A watch means blue-green algae have been detected and a harmful algal bloom is present or likely to develop. People are encouraged to avoid these areas and keep pets and livestock away from the water.

If you, or your pets, come into contact with algae, the KDHE and KDWP advised you to rinse the area with clean, fresh water.  Suspected HAB-related health incidents, whether human or animal, regardless of season, should be reported at  kdhe.ks.gov/1163 .

Families need help after florida workers’ bus crash with dui driver kills 8, injures 37, farmworker’s association asks for public’s support.

Andrea Torres , Digital Journalist

OCALA, Fla. – Families in need are grieving on Thursday after seven men and a woman from Mexico — who were in central Florida on a temporary work visa — died in a crash on their way to the farm where they worked.

According to the Farmworker’s Association of Florida , a bus full of workers was on its way to a watermelon farm when it collided with a pickup truck at about 6:35 a.m., on Tuesday , in Ocala.

Marion County Fire Rescue reported eight died and 37 were injured. Advocates of farmworkers in Florida attended a vigil in Spanish on Wednesday night in Apopka.

“While I can recall anecdotally a few noteworthy crashes in Florida of epic proportions, this one in Marion County stands out as the worst DUI-related crash for at least this generation,” Larry Coggins, of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, told The Ocala Gazette .

“Farmworkers tend to be forgotten, but it’s important not to forget farmworkers, especially during such difficult times,” Karen Patricio, of the Farmworker’s Association of Florida, wrote in a statement with an ongoing fundraiser .

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Bryan Maclean Howard, the driver of the 2001 Ford Ranger that struck the bus, told troopers he was driving to a methadone clinic after consuming marijuana oil, Klonopin, Lyrica, and Clonidine.

Martin County officials identified six of the eight victims as Alfredo Tovar, 20; Isaias Miranda, 21; Alfredo Salazar, 24; Jose Fraga, 27; Evarado Ventura, 30; and Manuel Perez, 46.

The victims’ families were trying to find a way to take their remains back to Mexico for Christian burial and to cover medical expenses in Florida. Mexican media reported Ventura and Perez were from the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced the owner of the farm that had contracted the workers is Mexican American. Cannon Farms released a statement saying, “Families are hurting and grieving and we just need to pray and support them.”

According to Alicia Barcena , a Mexican foreign relations official who released a statement on X, the eight who died had U.S. H-2A visas for temporary workers .

Mexican diplomats in the U.S. were also involved in trying to help the families of the workers who were allegedly in a Olvera Trucking bus without seatbelts.

“Protecting workers while transporting them with mandatory and enforceable safety provisions, like seat belts and safety inspections, can reduce injuries and deaths,” Ty Joplin, of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, told The Tampa Bay Times .

FHP troopers arrested Howard, the accused 41-year-old DUI driver, at the Adventhealth Ocala Hospital and he was in the custody of the Martin County Sheriff’s Office on Thursday facing eight counts of driving under the influence manslaughter.

Local10.com ’s Orlando-area partner reported Howard had an arrest record:

FHP: Man charged with DUI manslaughter after 8 killed, dozens injured in Central Florida migrant bus crash

MARION COUNTY, Fla. — Calling it a "massive traffic homicide investigation," the Florida Highway Patrol said eight people died and at least 40 people were injured in a migrant bus crash in Marion County early Tuesday morning.

What You Need To Know

Eight people died and at least 40 people were injured in a migrant bus crash in marion county fhp arrested bryan maclean howard, who was identified as the driver of a truck that crashed into the bus  several victims are still being treated.

The Florida Highway Patrol said a 2010 International Bus was traveling west on State Road 40 when it collided with an eastbound 2001 Ford Ranger Truck around 6:30 a.m., approximately 500 feet west of SW 148 Court.

The driver of the truck, identified by FHP as Bryan Maclean Howard, was arrested and charged on eight counts of DUI manslaughter.

The bus was transporting 53 migrant workers to a nearby farm, officials said. FHP is still working to determine what caused the collision, which sent the bus off the roadway and through a fence, before it overturned into what residents say is a horse farm pasture.

During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, FHP officials said the investigation into the crash will be lengthy. They also said more migrant workers are in Marion County this time of year, due to the size of its agricultural industry.

Calling them "hardworking individuals," Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said he believes everyone on the bus was in the county legally.

Woods said more than 30 ambulances, plus a Marion County School bus, were used to take victims to area hospitals.

HCA Florida Ocala Hospital is treating seven patients in critical condition and two that are said to be "stable." One other person is being treated at HCA Florida West Marion Hospital.

AdventHealth Ocala was treating over a dozen patients, all of which have been discharged or transferred.

During Tuesday's news conference, officials noted that they are still working to notify victims' next of kin. Woods said his heart goes out to the families of the victims.

"This is the death you do not expect," he said. "I pray that the good Lord gives them whatever peace that He can to get them through this."

State Road 40 between U.S. 41 and West County Road 328 between Ocala and Dunnellon has reopened as of late Tuesday.

8 dead after bus carrying farmworkers in Florida hit by truck, whose driver is charged with DUI-manslaughter

Eight people were dead and 40 others were hospitalized after a bus carrying farmworkers collided with a pickup truck and overturned early Tuesday in north central Florida, officials said.

The driver of the pickup, Bryan Maclean Howard, survived and was charged with eight counts of driving under the influence-manslaughter, said David Kerner, executive director of the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.

"Our sympathies and prayers are with the families of the deceased," Kerner said in a statement. "Consistent with our duties, the Florida Highway Patrol will conduct both a thorough and exhaustive traffic crash and criminal investigation."

The deadly collision happened around 6:35 a.m. on a hilly and rain-slicked rural road about 80 miles north of Orlando, the highway patrol said.

The bus, a 2010 International, was heading west on State Road 40 when, "for unknown reasons," a 2001 Ford Ranger "traveled toward the centerline" and the vehicles sideswiped each other, Highway Patrol Lt. Pat Riordan told reporters.

The Mexican foreign secretary, Alicia Bárcena, said in a post on X late Tuesday that all eight of those killed were Mexican and all had temporary H-2A visa for agricultural workers. The Mexican consul in Orlando, Juan Sabines Guerrero, would assist the victims’ families, she said.

A GoFundMe page to raise money for the survivors, set up by the Farmworkers Association of Florida, has raised more than $32,000 so far.

Court records show that there are at least 23 previous criminal cases against Howard, including failure to wear a seatbelt, leaving the scene of a crash, possession of cannabis and careless driving.

The bus, which was carrying about 50 people, barreled off the roadway, went through a fence, struck a tree and overturned in a field, Riordan said.

Forty of the bus passengers were hospitalized, Riordan said. At least eight of them were critically injured, according to the Marion County Fire Rescue service, which had initially reported that 53 people had been injured.

Riordan warned there was a "high probability" that the death count could rise because many of the injured were "in very serious condition."

“At this point, we are conducting a massive traffic homicide investigation,” Riordan said.

The driver of the Ford pickup was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries, he said.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods told reporters over 30 ambulances were at the scene and described the victims as “hard-working individuals.” He said the rain and the slick road conditions may have been factors in the crash.

Meanwhile, Dominique O’Connor of the Farmworker Association of Florida said it was trying to help local authorities aid the victims and their families, most of whom speak only Spanish and are not from the area.

Emergency workers at the scene of a fatal bus crash

"These workers are all here on H-2A work visas," O'Connor said.

The H-2A program allows certain U.S. employers to bring foreign nationals into the country to fill temporary agricultural jobs, O'Connor said.

In Orlando, the Mexican Consulate said on X that emergency telephone numbers are being made available for information about any Mexican people potentially involved in the crash or their family members.

The workers were headed to the family-owned Cannon Farms in Dunnellon, NBC affiliate WESH of Orlando reported, citing the highway patrol.

Cannon Farms announced on social media early Tuesday that it would be closed “out of respect to the losses and injuries endured early this morning in the accident that took place to the Olvera Trucking Harvesting Corp.”

“Please pray with us for the families and the loved ones involved in this tragic accident,” Cannon Farms said. “We appreciate your understanding at this difficult time.”

Calls to Cannon Farms went to a recorded message that said: "This is Cannon Farms. I just wanted to let everybody know that we are going to be closed due to a tragic accident. Please pray for the families of those involved and the losses of loved ones."

Olvera Trucking did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ambulances took the injured to several local hospitals. And at the request of first responders, Marion County Public Schools used one of its buses to ferry some of the victims to hospitals.

AdventHealth Ocala said it was treating 16 patients: 12 in the main emergency department at AdventHealth Ocala and four at AdventHealth Timber Ridge ER, Dr. Rodrigo Torres, AdventHealth Ocala’s chief medical officer, said in a statement.

Two HCA Florida Healthcare facilities in Ocala were also treating patients: seven in critical condition and two stable at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and one stable at HCA Florida West Marion Hospital.

Florida elementary school principal struck, slapped, choked student, deputies say

Dontay akeem prophet arrested in alleged incident at destiny leadership academy in ocala.

Daniel Dahm , Digital Content Manager

Troy Campbell , Reporter

OCALA, Fla. – A Marion County elementary school principal was arrested Saturday on allegations of putting a student in a choke hold, striking him with a cable, twisting his ankle, slapping him in the face and preventing him from leaving a classroom for over 40 minutes.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said Dontay Akeem Prophet, 33, the principal at Destiny Leadership Academy in Ocala, was arrested on charges of aggravated child abuse and false imprisonment of a child under 13 years of age.

According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy on Friday investigated a call about a physical disturbance between a student and the principal.

During the investigation, surveillance video from the classroom shows Prophet preventing the child from leaving the room for over 40 minutes. Deputies said the video captured Prophet grabbing the student, restraining him on the ground and employing a choke hold.

Sheriff’s officials said Prophet can also be seen on camera using a charging cable to strike the child, causing the boy to fall and sustain injuries. Prophet also twisted the child’s ankle, slapped the student in the face and subjected him to further physical abuse, deputies said.

“I don’t know if you know this or not, but there’s a security camera in that room,” a deputy can be heard saying in released body-camera footage.

“There is?” Prophet can be heard asking.

According to sheriff’s officials, Prophet claimed the altercation was an attempt to prevent the child from harming himself.

Authorities, however, said the evidence clearly contradicted Prophet’s claims, and he was arrested and taken to the Marion County Jail, where he was being held without bond.

Investigators said the video makes the case very clear.

“When our deputy arrived and viewed the surveillance video of this teacher stopping the child from leaving, hitting him, holding him down, putting him in a chokehold until he finally lets him leave the room — it’s heartbreaking,” Valerie Strong with MCSO said. “We send our children to school to people who are supposed to teach them and protect them and help them flourish from children into adults.”

According to the school’s website , Destiny Leadership Academy offers a “K-5th grade education with Christian principles and character-building strategies.”

“Students are provided a high-quality, ability-based learning environment that links student achievement to school and classroom practices, and allows teachers to connect with students more effectively by understanding your child’s specific academic and developmental needs. Being an ability-based school provides an enriched learning environment consistent in helping your student achieve academic excellence,” the website states.

Honor Flight at Home celebrates those who served and sacrificed

Registration for june ceremony open through may 25.

Each week, this series shares MarionMade! stories of our many wonderful people, places, products and programs in the greater Marion community. To read more positive stories of Marion, or to share some of your own, visit us at marionmade.org or on social media.

Marion County is home to thousands of veterans. For veterans of World War II, Korea and Vietnam who cannot travel to Washington, D.C., local volunteers led by Margie Saull are working to honor them in a ceremony at Tri-Rivers Career Center at 2 p.m. June 8.

Saull, a retired teacher from Marion City Schools, started Marion’s Honor Flight at Home ceremony after attending one in Florida with her father, Charles Sheets, a veteran of World War II.

“I had heard about many veterans going to Washington, D.C., on honor flights. My dad was not able to fly because he had some health issues affecting his ears,” Saull said. “We were in Florida and we took him to an Honor Flight at Home event. I thought, what an incredible opportunity for the veterans who are unable to travel.”

Saull and her family returned home. She spent a year working with the Honor Flight Columbus to plan the event. The first one was held in August 2018.

“Thirty-two veterans were honored. The auditorium was packed,” Saull recalls.

Her father was among the first veterans to participate. He died in 2019.

“I’m glad he got to be honored. That’s what we need to do − honor veterans before it’s too late,” Saull said.

So far, about 100 veterans have been honored, which is the equivalent of a planeload of veterans on an honor flight.

Open to Ohio veterans ages 65 and older, serving 1941-75

The Honor Flight at Home Marion event is open to Ohio veterans aged 65 and older who have served on active duty from 1941 to 1975. Veterans may not have participated on an honor flight previously and may not be able to travel to Washington , D.C.

Veterans must fill out an application by May 25 by contacting Saull at 740-360-8902 or by email at [email protected] .

Each veteran receives a picture with the American flag. The ceremony includes an honor guard, music and giveaways. Families and the public are also invited to take part.

For some veterans who were not welcomed home warmly, this ceremony can be especially meaningful.

Rewarding and worthwhile program

“We had a Vietnam veteran in 2019 who wasn’t sure he wanted to come. I said we’d be glad to honor you. Two weeks later, I received a note. He wrote to say all those feelings that had been built up inside of him all those years were totally erased in one afternoon. That makes the program rewarding and worthwhile,” Saull said.

Margie’s husband, retired principal and teacher Fred Saull, also works to coordinate the event. Dozens of volunteers and donors work to make the day memorable from the moment veterans check in at 1 p.m.

“We have a motorcycle group who will help escort veterans in. We have Explorers to help park cars. On the day of the event, we have at least 50 people who are helping. There is great support from the community,” Saull said.

In addition, schoolchildren are writing letters to thank each veteran for their service to read after the ceremony.

Saull recalls going to a memory care unit to see a veteran who had participated in the Honor Flight At Home event.

“Somehow, we had missed taking this veteran’s picture at the event. We went to his memory care unit to take his photo with the flag. He waved and recognized me. He had received a patriotic quilt, which he proudly showed us was now on his bed,” Saull said.

The Marion County Historical Society supports the event by providing presidential re-enactors to make the day special.

“We are the home of the free because of the brave,” Saull said.

A crash on SR-40 in Ocala involving a bus killed eight people and hospitalized dozens of others on Tuesday, Florida Highway Patrol said.

According to FHP, eight of those people are critically injured. In total, FHP has reported 53 patients in this massive crash.

"There is high probability this may be beyond eight fatalities," Lt. Patrick Riordan with FHP said during a press conference.

According to FHP, the 2010 International bus was transporting 53 farm workers to Cannon Farms in Dunnellon when the crash happened at 6:37 a.m. on SR-40 just west of SW 148 Ct.

For reasons to be determined, the bus and a Ford Ranger truck collided in a "sideswiped manner," FHP said. After the collision, the bus traveled off the roadway, went through a fence, struck a tree and then overturned.

Riordan said the truck, which was traveling east on SR-40, moved toward the center line and collided with the bus that was traveling west.

Officials promised their investigation would be relentless, but with that, comes time, Riordan said.

"At this point, we are conducting a massive traffic homicide investigation," Riordan said. "This will be a very lengthy and thorough investigation. I can tell you that it's going to be probably six months, at least, before we can conclude factually what transpired here today."

Just before 5 p.m. Tuesday, FHP announced the arrest of Bryan Maclean Howard , the driver of the truck. He is facing eight counts of DUI manslaughter, FHP said.

When troopers responded to a hospital in Ocala, they say Howard's eyes were bloodshot and watery, and added that his speech was slurred, according to an arrest report.

The arrest report also says Howard admitted to smoking marijuana with his friend the night before and to taking three prescription medications before he went to bed.

He was denied bond in a first court appearance Wednesday.

Troopers say that Howard was involved in another crash just three days before hitting the bus, the arrest report says.

According to court records obtained by WESH, Howard has been convicted 20 times since 2003, and all but three of those cases are traffic offenses.

Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said he believes the victims are migrant farm workers, which is very common for the county this time of the year, and rejected questions about their legal status.

"They are hard working individuals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them being here," Woods said.

On social media, Cannon Farms said they will be closed Tuesday.

"Please pray with us for the families and the loved ones involved in this tragic accident," Cannon Farms said.

On Tuesday afternoon, AdventHealth told WESH 2 they were currently treating one patient from the crash. Several other patients were treated at AdventHealth and then released.

"Our prayers are with all those affected by the tragic bus accident in Ocala," AdventHealth said in a statement to WESH 2. "Our immediate priority is to provide exceptional medical care to those injured, and compassionate support to our patients and their loved ones."

HCA Florida West Marion Hospital also took patients from the crash and told WESH 2 that five were in the emergency room on Tuesday morning.

SR-40 was shut down in both directions, but the Florida Department of Transportation said the road has now reopened to traffic.

Marion County Public Schools says one of their school buses was not involved in the crash but says they did transport victims to the hospital.

The Farmworker Association of Florida has set up a verified GoFundMe to support the victims and their families who were affected by the incident.

Family members of loved ones killed or people injured in the crash in Ocala can access financial support and emotional support by contacting 877-MADD-HELP or 877-ASK-MADD.

The support lines are staffed 24 hours a day and have bilingual support staff online for Spanish-speaking people.
