The Designer

The graphic designer for Visit Malaysia 2020 is known as Alfred Phua Hong Fook, 23. Alfred is from Melaka and his design was chosen from hundreds of submissions from all over Malaysia during the competition period earlier this year. Besides that, Alfred's a graphic design graduate from INTI Centre of Art & Design in Subang Jaya, envisioned the work to represent the best of Malaysian values and identity.

His design was primarily inspired by batik print tradition, features a rhinoceros hornbill that represents the fauna and eco-adventures in Malaysia. A red hibiscus flower - the bunga raya - reflects a celebration of cultural diversity, while the wild fern - paku pakis - invites the world to a table of Malaysian cuisine

Alfred worked on his design for 10 days, piecing together his ideas to create a thoughtful and meaningful design

" To be given an opportunity to participate in an open competition allowed so many Malaysian designers to showcase our talents. This opens up a new road for us. It shows that we do have talent here," he said.

Contradiction on the logo

When our Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad unveiled our tourism logo and it has received much positive response from netizens - especially since the former logo was heavily criticised for its PowerPoint-like-design

However, some netizen pointed out that the new Visit Malaysia Year 2020 logo was plagiarised from other design

To verify the claim, FeedMe Malaysian ran a check by quickly cropping away the background and trace them on the VM2020 logo. While all three elements might look similar when they are put side by side, none of them was identical when places above one another.

In conclusion, the Visit Malaysia 2020 Logo is not plagiarised and is purely so as originally designed by Alfred Phua himself.

Malaysian tourism logo sparks social media furore

Visit Malaysia 2020 logo gets a negative reception – but are designers being too harsh?

Visit Malaysia 2020 and cartoon graphics of animals wearing sunglasses

A new logo for the Malaysian tourism ministry has come under fire from designers online thanks to what many have cited as an amateurish look. The Visit Malaysia 2020 logo design (above) was created in-house by a member of the Malaysian tourism ministry for free.

Tailored towards attracting the attention of 36 million potential tourists, the logo mixes landmarks such as the Petronas Towers with comical graphics of native wildlife wearing sunglasses. These elements are incorporated into the Visit Malaysia 2020 name, along with the campaign's slogan: "Travel. Enjoy. Respect."

Following its launch at the Asean Tourism Forum 2018 in Chiang Mai, Thailand, the logo has been criticised by designers on social media platforms, with many demanding that it is changed.

We did not pay a single cent Nazri Aziz

Common complaints have taken issue with how old the design looks, the disjointed composition, and the basic animal graphics. We are yet to see a single part of the composition that people approve of.

Despite the widespread derision the logo has attracted, Malaysian Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Aziz does not intend to replace it. "I have no intention of changing. We are not going back. It was meant for foreign tourist and not locals. When I launched it in Chiang Mai they liked and praised it," he told The Malaysian Insight .

"We did not pay a single cent. The one who designed it is our own staff. I trust my staff that has more than 30 years in tourism in this matter."

The designer's previous work appears to include similar elements

One of the designers involved with the new logo, Rosli Hassan, has defended the branding by saying that he was just doing his job based on the idea that was agreed upon with the ministry.

Daily design news, reviews, how-tos and more, as picked by the editors.

Hassan's previous work includes the logo for Malaysia's Tourism and Culture Ministry, which appears to use a similar palm tree graphic that has been flipped and had the colour of the trunk changed. Following the backlash, Hassan says he has considered taking out a lawsuit against those who have tarnished his reputation.

Logos are a contentious topic with designers, even when a huge budget is involved . So is this design, built with zero budget, really deserving of so much hatred? Or is it just an easy target for designers who need to relax?

Visit Malaysia 2020 might not be a groundbreaking design, but it's funny, it's drawn people's attention in a similar way to the recent LA designer advert , and what's wrong with a retro design – even if the '90s look was possibly not deliberate...

Tourism ministry to revoke licence of travel agencies misusing tourist, umrah visas for haj.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing

KUALA LUMPUR: The Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry will immediately revoke the licences of travel agencies found to be misusing tourist and umrah visas for haj purposes, says its minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

He said the ministry’s secretary-general Datuk Roslan Abdul Rahman had been instructed to investigate the incident of prospective haj pilgrims being stranded in Mecca.

“Tourism Malaysia is currently probing the matter. We await a report from them, and if necessary, we will dispatch officials from the headquarters,” he said yesterday, reported Bernama.

There have been media reports about 300 prospective pilgrims from Malaysia being stranded in Mecca, believed to have been scammed by a tour agency offering cheap packages using tourist visas.

Tiong said initial findings suggested that the affected pilgrims were informed that their tourist visas could be converted to umrah or haj visas, adding that umrah pilgrims must caution against overstaying or performing the haj without a valid permit.

ITC HEADS TO KAZAN TO ADVANCE MALAYSIA’S POSITION AS MUSLIM-FRIENDLY DESTINATION AND UMRAH HUB

ministry of tourism and culture malaysia logo

Qul Sharif Mosque, Kazan,

Putrajaya, 13 May 2024 – Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC), a prominent agency under the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), is exploring Kazan, Russia, as a potential new Muslim tourist market to tap into. The sizeable Muslim population in Kazan is seen as an opportunity for ITC to introduce Malaysia and its Muslim-friendly tourism and hospitality offerings.

Participating in a series of meetings there, ITC wishes to understand the needs of this geographical market and engage with its local tourism industry to share information and provide support for enhanced collaborations.

Among the engagements lined up are:

  • Participation in the prestigious 15th International Economic Forum “Russia – Islamic World Kazan Forum 2024” taking place on 15 May 2024, at the Kazan Expo IEC in Kazan, Russia. This participation aligns with ITC’s ongoing efforts to establish Malaysia as a leading Umrah transit hub.
  • Presentation by ITC and Tourism Malaysia at a roundtable discussion titled “Development of the Tourism Sector in the Russian Federation, including Halal standards.” During this session, Mr. Nizran Noordin, Director-General of ITC, will deliver a presentation on “ Successful Experiences in Developing Halal Tourism in Islamic Countries.” His insights will be shared alongside esteemed representatives from Emirates Tourism Council, Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia and Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of Jordan.
  • Participation at the inaugural meeting of the Malaysia-Russia Working Group on Tourism Cooperation where ITC will give an overview of Malaysia’s Islamic Tourism Sector to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a Muslim-Friendly Tourism and Hospitality (MFTH) and Umrah hub destination.
  • Meetings with local Russian travel agents to share about Malaysia’s positioning as an Umrah hub for the region, including Russia. This meeting aims to understand current travel trends in Russia and the typical journey of Russian Umrah pilgrims. By gleaning this information, ITC can effectively apply these learnings to enhance their Umrah Hub offerings to Russians, and reinforce Malaysia’s position as a leading transit point for Umrah travellers.

Those platforms are valuable for ITC to connect with international delegates interested in the Islamic Tourism and MFTH sectors. This interaction allows ITC to elevate Malaysia’s MFTH brand recognition on a global scale.

“Our presence here in Kazan and participation in the 1st meeting of the Malaysia-Russia Working Group on Tourism Cooperation and Russia-Islamic World Kazan Forum 2024 underscores ITC’s commitment to advancing Malaysia’s position in the global Islamic tourism landscape,” said Mr. Nizran Noordin, Director-General of ITC. “This platform allows us to showcase Malaysia’s vibrant Muslim-friendly offerings, forge strategic partnerships, and further solidify our effort in developing and promoting Malaysia as an Umrah hub and Muslim-friendly destination.”

He added: “ITC’s participation also aims to foster greater cultural understanding between Malaysia and Russia. This will help identify the trends and preferences of this market and drive not only tourist traffic between both destinations, but also create networking opportunities and collaborations among the tourism trade players that will bring about economic benefits to our respective destinations.”

Meanwhile, ITC is also leveraging this visit to promote its key events in Malaysia namely Islamic Tourism Month 2024, featuring exciting tourism promotions and offerings, and the 4th World Islamic Tourism Conference (WITC), a platform for knowledge sharing, media exposure, and collaboration for the global tourism community.
