A country that has only recently begun to emerge from the shadow of a turbulent past, Montenegro is blessed with a staggeringly rich abundance of natural and cultural attractions.

One of Europe’s newest countries, with a history that dates back to the Byzantine Empire of the 9th century, Montenegro can boast an incredible diversity of highlights for its size. Byron once wrote; “When Pearls of Nature were sown, it was with a full hand that they were cast on this soil”, and Montenegro is indeed a country with a lot to offer the visitor.

Covering an area of just under 14,000 square kilometres it enjoys some of the most picturesque coastline anywhere in the Adriatic, whilst the mountains of its northern regions include the stunning landscapes of Durmitor National Park and the Tara River Canyon, the deepest in Europe. In recent years the country has regularly featured in the listings of the world’s top tourist destinations, its stunning beaches and well-preserved historic towns providing it with an enviable mix of culture and beauty.

Home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, captivating old towns like Budva and Cetinje and a landscape that includes the stunning Kotor Bay and the ancient forests of Biogradska Gora National Park, Montenegro provides a spectacular destination for both active adventures and cultural breaks.

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Montenegro though you should be up to date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In Montenegro the official unit of currency is the Euro.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours we frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your guides will be able to advise you accordingly.

Language & Religion

In Montenegro, the official language is Montenegrin. Montenegro is a multi-religious country. Although Orthodox Christianity is the dominant form of religion, there are also sizable adherents of Islam and Catholic Christianity. The dominant Church is the Serbian Orthodox Church although traces of a forming Montenegrin Orthodox Church are present.

Montenegro is 1 hour ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Montenegrin cuisine can be divided into Northern, Continental and Mediterranean. Nearly all produce is organic, and tastes are distinctive. A traditional form of cooking is ispod - 'under the coals' - in a pot known as a sac. The northern area features forests berries, blueberries, raspberries and strawberries, also herbal teas and wild mushrooms. They cook with sour cream (kajmak), yoghurt and both cow's and sheep's cheese. The finest kajmak, it is claimed, comes from Trsa, the highest pasture in Durmitor, naturally flavoured with wild herbs makes a delicious dip.

Dishes include stewed sauerkraut, lamb cooked in milk, peppers in kajmak and Durmitor steak. Montenegrins are noted carnivores. The continental area uses a lot of fish from Skadar Lake, especially carp, trout and eel, smoked, fried and in salad. They prepare smoked ham, cheese in olive oil, sausages and smoked mutton ham. Around Podgorica they stuff cabbage leaves with minced meat and rice, and carp with risotto and dried plums. The Mediterranean holy trinity is wine, fish and olive oil. Olive oil is the basic of every meal with fish, salad and vegetables and sauces, with garlic and parsley.

Montenegro produces both red and white wines. The terraced slopes of Crmnica are the source of the pick of the crop. Vranac is the best known and an eminently drinkable red, with a fine ruby colour and a Mediterranean character. Vranac pro Cordem is a vranac with a high level of prothoanthocyanidol and is marketed as being good for your heart. The third popular variety is Merlot. Krstac is a pleasant dry white which competes with the local Chardonnay and with a very decent Sauvignon.

The real national drink is rakije, a white grape brandy which is the universal mark of Montenegrin hospitality and a great source of goodwill. The slightly upmarket version is Kruna, distilled in copper stills fired with vine twigs and wood, and the Podgorica variety is called Crnogorski Prvijenac.

The best way to explore the charming nation of Montenegro is to get out and about in nature. This remarkable little country has an abundance of natural riches, from surging rivers and mighty mountains to deep canyons, rocky sea cliffs and dense forests.

Many are happy to bask on Montenegro's short stretch of Adriatic Coast, enjoying the clear waters and historic fortified towns, but for those willing to drag themselves away from the shore, there are rafting adventures on the Tara River, hikes in the Prokletije Mountains and rugged adventures in a string of national parks.

In this small nation, you can start the day scuba diving on the coast's shipwrecks, go canyoning in the hills above Kotor in the afternoon, then spend the night in a mountain village, ready to start hiking the next morning. You can even ski here from January to March. Here are the best outdoor adventures in Montenegro.

Montenegro_Rafting.jpg

Rafting on the Tara River

One of Montenegro’s prime natural wonders is the dramatic Tara Canyon , a deep cleft carved by the Tara River through the mountains of Durmitor National Park in the far north of the country. At points along the gorge, the river passes between forest-clad walls of rock that are more than 1295m (4250ft) high. It is exceedingly difficult to grasp the scale of the canyon from above – exploring at water level is the best way to experience the gorge in all its grandeur.

The rafting season runs from around April to October, with the fastest flows coinciding with the spring melts in April. An 82km (51-mile) section of the river is navigable, and classic two-day rafting trips kick off near the Tara Bridge and wind through the deepest parts of the canyon. Most day trips only traverse the last 18km (11 miles) of the canyon, which is still a beautiful stretch including many modest rapids.

Planning tip: The most convenient base for rafting trips is the town of Žabljak; Summit Travel Agency offers a range of rafting trips in the Tara Canyon, with transfers to and from Žabljak.

Montenegro_Canyoneering.jpg

Hiking Montenegro's mountain trails

Befitting a country studded with mountains, Montenegro has an excellent network of hiking tracks winding through its national parks and peaks – though they're not all well-maintained or well-marked and support infrastructure is quite limited. There are mountain huts on some routes, but it's best to make arrangements for treks through a local adventure travel agency, who can also help with route planning and arrange an experienced guide.

Recommended short hikes include circuits of Lake Biograd in Biogradska Gora National Park and Black Lake in Durmitor National Park and the traverse of the Vrmac ridge in the Bay of Kotor. Hard-core hikers should consider tackling the 192km (119-mile) cross-border Peaks of the Balkans trail in the Prokletije Mountains or the 180km (112-mile) Coastal Traversal route between Mt Orjen and Bar.

Planning tip: Support is needed for any serious hike in Montenegro. The local Mountaineering Association can help with finding guides and arranging accommodation in mountain huts, and talk you through route planning.

Young girl climbing on a narrow path in the Durmitor Mountains

Climbing & canyoning in the Montenegro mountains

The Durmitor mountain range also offers a vast array of more daring pursuits for thrill seekers, from steep, exposed hikes along mountain ridges to roped ascents of sheer rockfaces. At Pirlitor , two rock faces have been prepared for climbing with bolts and hangers, but you will need your own ropes, harnesses and quickdraws – or you can enlist the services of a specialist adventure agency such as Durmitor Adventure .

Just south of the national park is one of the country’s prime sites for canyoning (or canyoneering as it’s known in the USA) – the extraordinary Nevidio Canyon , enclosing a 2.7km (1.7-mile) section of the Komarnica River. Nevidio translates to ‘invisible’ which is a reference to the narrowness of the gorge; at some points, the channel is just a few meters wide.

Canyoning involves sliding along gorges, scrambling over rocks, abseiling down waterfalls and swimming through river basins. It is great fun but potentially dangerous, especially in a narrow gorge such as Nevidio, so it should only be attempted in the driest months (July and August) and only under the direction of experienced guides.

Other good canyoning destinations include the Sopot Canyon near Herceg Novi , the Skurda canyon above Kotor, the Rikavac and Medjurecje canyons (both near Bar), and the Grlja Canyon (in Prokletije National Park).

Planning tip: For adventures in the Nevidio Canyon, Montenegro Canyoning is a highly recommended group that focuses solely on this canyon. Otherwise, various agencies run canyoning expeditions out of Nikšić and Žabljak.

Montenegro_Paragliding.jpg

Paragliding over the coast near Budva and Kotor

With so many accessible mountains and sheer drops, Montenegro offers plenty of opportunities for daredevils to fly like the double-headed eagle on the Montenegrin flag on a paragliding chute and soak up the spectacular scenery from above.

One particularly excellent launch site for paragliders is in the mountains high above the Budva Riviera, where you can glide down to a landing site on the beach. Many fliers swear flights from the peaks of Durmitor National Park are the best of the lot. At either of these locations, tandem flights can be arranged for beginners.

Planning trip: Paragliding Montenegro is one of several operators offering tandem flights from the popular launch site at Brajići near Budva, landing on Bečići Beach. For trips in Durmitor National Park, try Durmitor Adventure .

Montenegro_Diving.jpg

Diving the shipwrecks of the Adriatic Coast

There is an awful lot of history on show in this compact nation and not all of it is above ground. Shipwrecks spanning a millennium of nautical disasters, from Greek and Roman trading ships lost in storms to battleships from World War II, provide a backdrop to all manner of interesting underwater flora and fauna. The waters off Montenegro offer visibility that averages around 15m (49ft) but can stretch even further. The best time to dive is from May to September, when the surface water is at its warmest – although you will still need a 7mm neoprene wetsuit.

It's not all about the wrecks. All along the coast are drop-offs, underwater caves, springs and reefs. You might spot the odd sea turtle and lobster, along with schools of dentex and gilthead bream. Keep an eye out for conger eels, scorpionfish, octopuses, sea snails, red coral, colorful sponges, red gorgonian fans and rare giant mussels. Off Ulcinj , as well as ships wrecked over the centuries by the town’s notorious pirates, there are the remains of a submerged town to explore.

Planning tip: Budva, Pržno and Ulcinj are the main hubs for diving in Montenegro. Pro Diving Montenegro in Pržno is one of the top operators, with trips to various sites and wrecks, including the wreck of the cargo ship Tihany , which sank offshore in 1917.

Montenegro_Bushcraft.jpg

Learn bushcraft in the Montenegro wilds

While Montenegro might not have bush of the kind found in Australia, New Zealand or Africa, it does have plenty of real wilderness to explore. In recent years Montenegrin versions of Bear Grylls have started leading guided expeditions into remote areas, imparting basic survivalist skills along the way.

On these only moderately challenging expeditions, you can learn how to start a fire without matches, how to forage for edible plants, how to build a shelter, how to purify water and how to navigate using just natural cues. Think of it as Scouting for adults with a yearning for adventure!

Planning tip: Bushcraft Montenegro is one of several bushcraft schools that will show you the basics of surviving in the Montenegrin wilderness.

Montenegro_Camping.jpg

Camping at all levels of comfort in stunning scenery

If you don't feel up to foraging for supper, there are numerous commercial campsites scattered all over Montenegro. Some of them are quite basic (squat toilets are not uncommon) but spectacular locations are pretty much a given, no matter where in the country you happen to be. There are even a few glamping sites, where you can rent pre-pitched tents with proper made-up beds.

Campgrounds cater to all proclivities, including an excellent clothing-optional site in a remote spot near the Croatian border and a complex on the Bay of Kotor where guests can keep their beer cool in a chilly spring-feed stream. Also worth considering are the eko and etno villages of the mountainous areas, where accommodation is provided in rustic wooden shepherds' cabins.

Planning tip: As well as official camping grounds, during summer, when shepherds take their flocks to the higher meadows, you can ask permission to pitch your tent next to one of their katun dwellings. Agencies such as Jelka Tours in Kolašin can organize stays in eco-villages styled like traditional katun huts.

Wildlife Holidays in Montenegro

Montenegro Durmitor NP Sunrise Shutterstock 151426919

Nestled in the heart of the Balkans, the small country of Montenegro is a hidden jewel that lies on the Adriatic coast and boasts some truly spectacular scenery. Following the break-up of Yugoslavia, it finally achieved independence in June 2006; it’s largest, and capital, city is Podgorica.

Montenegro is one of Europe's (and the world's) prime biodiversity 'hot-spots'. The number of species per area unit index is 0.837, which is the highest recorded in any European country!

The lovely Adriatic coastline varies from beaches, sheltered inlets and saltpans through to the magnificent Bay of Kotor with its limestone massifs. Lake Skadar is home to the most westerly breeding population of Dalmatian Pelicans as well as thousands of Pygmy Cormorants, while the forests and jagged (black) mountains of Montenegro's Durmitor National Park, offer excellent raptor-viewing!

Our Montenegro Specialist Recommends

We offer a 9-day tour timed to coincide with the spring bird migration visiting two contrasting locations – Lake Skadar in the south-east, and the forests and mountains of Durmitor National Park inland. Montenegro is not (yet!) on the main Mediterranean tourist trail, so it is an ideal time to explore this little-known European country.

8 Days Scenic Montenegro Cruise Tour

8 Days Scenic Montenegro Cruise

We just arrived home from our 7 day sailing trip with 16 of our closest friends and family. I can't say enough good things about Alexandra, her husband, the crew, or the rest of the DM yachting staff. Our trip was magical to say the least. The included breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals were delicious and the drinks we purchased from the bar were well priced. The alcohol we purchased on the boat was less expensive when compared to any of the port restaurants by a significant margin. Also, I'd like to especially highlight the professionalism of Alexandra and her husband who personally helped us and went above and beyond to make sure we were accommodated through a surprise incident where we needed temporarily evacuate the boat. They organized for us to stay at a very nice resort, treated us to meals at that hotel, and kept us informed throughout the process.. While we enjoyed the unplanned visit to this resort, we were happy to return to the boat and continue our adventure through Montenegro. My wife and I hope to book with them again knowing that no matter what unplanned event may possibly happen, they will work to ensure you have a beautiful vacation. Thank you so much!

Montenegro is an underrated gem! The tour was perfect even though the weather wasn't at all times, but Borislav, our tour escort made sure we plan our day such that we make most of the sunny days as well as enjoy the rainy ones. The tour was well organized, well paced, communication was great and we were well taken care of at every step. We'd love to visit again someday cause 8 days isn't enough to explore this beautiful country!

The tour in Montenegro was really nice. Montours was an excellent partner from the planning stage to the very end. And our tour guide, Tihomir, was perfect! Montenegro is a lovely country and we hope to return to see more of it. We had some difficulties with the payment function on TourRadar's website and some of the communication seemed complicated, but we managed. Thank you! Carolyn

Our guide, Nemanja, was excellent and made us feel like family. He was also our driver and made detours to make our trip extra special. Very thoughtful and kind. He knew the trails well and explained the historical elements well. We truly enjoyed every aspect of this trip. The information and coordination before the trip was deplorable. Tour Radar and Nature Trips did not get us the necessary vouchers and information until two days before our trip. Tour Radar really let the ball drop and it took us going onto FB and looking up the WhatsApp number and calling Nature Trips directly to get the necessary information. I would give Tour Radar a failing grade but Nemanja and his agency an excellent.

Lying along Montenegro’s glittering Budva Riviera, the town is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast and sat upon the original boundary between the Holy Roman & the Byzantine Empires. We will be staying in one of Budva’s hotels, located close to the old city walls and within easy reach of the town’s lovely Venetian architecture. This evening we’ll have dinner looking out over the blue waters of the Adriatic.

Day 2 : Budva – Virparzar

Location: budva, virpazar, accommodation: homestay, accommodation name: vidas house or similar, meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner.

This morning there will be time to explore Budva’s city walls and narrow medieval streets before heading up into the country’s mountainous interior. After a brief stop to see one of the country’s most iconic sights – the traditional fishing village of Sveti Stefan which has now been transformed in its entirety into a hotel – we’ll ascend a mountain road and take a short walk to an abandoned Austro-Hungarian fortress with superb views out over the dramatic coastline. Continuing on to Rijeka Crnojevica, we’ll enter Lake Skadar National Park and walk down to a beautiful lakeside village for a traditional ‘Old Montenegrin’ lunch. We’ll then take to small boats and following meandering waterways, there’ll be opportunities for an afternoon swim before finally arriving at the 15th century remains of the citadel of Zabljak Crnojevica close to our overnight stop in the small settlement of Virparzar, on the shores of the lake.Approx 1-2 hrs walking

Day 3 : Virparzar – Biogradska Gora N.P

Location: virpazar, biogradska gora, accommodation: katun goles wooden cabins (with shared facilities) or similar.

An early start and we’ll take a ride on one of the most spectacular train journeys in Europe, crossing the highest railway bridge on the continent to take in the breath-taking views down into the Moraca Gorge. Arriving in the town of Kolasin, we then enter Montenegro’s central mountainous region, sandwiched between the Tara and Lim Rivers. Here we find the unspoilt landscapes of the Biogradska Gora National Park, an area of ancient forests, high mountains and glacial lakes that cover some 54 square kilometres. Home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, the park provides us with a glorious backdrop for today’s walk, as we follow a ridge trail up to the beautiful alpine katun (summer pasture) where we will spend the night as guests of Ranko, a big local character who makes traditional cheeses and whose family will be sure to feed us very well tonight.Approx 3-4 hrs walking

Day 4 : Biogradska Gora N.P - Poscenje

Location: biogradska gora, pošćenje, accommodation: ethno village nevidio (with shared facilities) or similar.

An early morning walk today takes us from the alpine pastureland down a steep 600m descent to the unspoilt tranquilly of Biogradska Gora’s primeval forest and lake. Transferring to a minibus we’ll then head up into the wild open landscapes that make up the Sinjajevina highlands before descending to Durmitor National Park, home to the Tara canyon, Europe’s deepest at 1,300m. After stopping off at the famous Tara Bridge – where those that wish can have a go on one of Europe’s longest zip-wires (not included in the trip price!) – we’ll have lunch outdoors at a small agro-tourism restaurant. We’ll visit the flat valley floor which contains many medieval stecci, engraved tombstones unique to the Balkans. From here we’ll make for the small village of Poscenje which will be our base for the next two nights.Approx 2-3 hrs walking

Day 5 : Walk To Durmitor National Park

Location: durmitor.

A short drive takes us to the village of Kozarica from where we’ll follow a beautiful valley northwards into the UNESCO World Heritage site of Durmitor National Park, a stunning land of craggy granite peaks as well as small villages and traditional farms. This is a wild part of the country and with few roads holds the country’s best walking opportunities. Today’s walk is wild and magical, across open plains and through primal forests, but also a little more challenging; we ascend around 700m and in places the path is narrow - for those of you that like a hike in the great outdoors, today will be your highlight of the tour. For those not feeling up to it there are great local walks near to the accommodation, which in its self is a lovely place to unwind and relax.Approx 5-6 hrs walking

Day 6 : Durmitor N.P – Cetinje - Kotor

Location: durmitor, cetinje, kotor, accommodation name: marija or similar.

Driving south via narrow but spectacular mountain roads we arrive at the old royal capital of Cetinje. Of immense importance historically, Cetinje’s rich heritage dates back to the 15th century when it lay at the centre of both the cultural and religious development of a fledging Montenegro and its Eastern Orthodox religion. We’ll take a short stroll through the atmospheric town before transferring by road to the neighbouring Lovcen National Park, home to the stunning mausoleum of Petar II Petovic-Njegoš, a revered 19th century poet and leader who transformed Montenegro from a theocracy into a secular state. The largest and most important monument in the park, the mausoleum is located at the summit of Jezerski vrh (1,657m) and from its lofty heights it offers some fantastic views out over the entire country. From near here we’ll take an amazing historic walk down an old military road known as the Ladder of Cattaro. This walk offers stunning views down to the old Dalmatian town of Kotor (now a UNESCO World Heritage Site), as well as some spectacular views over the Bay of Kotor and the surrounding landscapes. Approx 3-4hrs walking

Day 7 : In & Around Bay Of Kotor

Location: kotor, meals included: breakfast, dinner.

You may want to spend the day just exploring the labyrinthine streets of Kotor, swimming in the warm waters of the beautiful bay or perhaps exploring some of the incredibly picturesque villages that dot the bay such as Perast and Dobrota. For those who want to undertake a more substantial walk (with stunning coastal views at every turn), we plan to leave Kotor’s medieval walls on foot and ascend the Vrmac peninsular on another of Montenegro’s stunning old military roads built by the Austro-Hungarians. From the ridge-top trail there are mesmerising views out over the inner and outer bays and as we pass by yet another fortress we’ll descend back down to the waters of the Adriatic before returning to Kotor. It’s a truly stunning walk which will remain with you long after the suntan has faded.Approx 5-6 hrs walking

Day 8 : Tour Ends In Kotor

Meals included: breakfast.

The tour finishes after breakfast. Those booked on the suggested group flights will transfer back across the border to Dubrovnik in time for the flight home.

7 Day Birdwatching Holiday in Montenegro

montenegro wildlife tour

Group birdwatching holiday with an expert guide Departure dates: 7th April 2014 Solo bookings accepted

Enjoy an incredible week of birdwatching in Montenegro’s untamed nature! Starting at Lake Skadar National Park, you will discover one of Europe’s top five sites for migratory birds at that magical time of year when migration crosses with the breeding season. Massive Lake Skadar and the connected Bojana Delta are both Important Bird Areas, Ramsar wetlands of International Importance, and stunningly beautiful too. Home to the rare Dalmatian Pelican, Flamingo and the world’s second-largest colony of Pygmy Cormorants, this giant biosphere will give you the chance to see wetland life in all its glory, from Glossy Ibis and Squacco Heron to bitterns, grebes, egrets, terns and more. Over 280 different species of birds are attracted by the variety of habitats at these amazing and extensive wetlands, including open water, Europe’s largest area of floating vegetation such as water lilies, mud flats, the saltpans at Ulcinj, rocky shores, marshland, rushing rivers and forested hinterland.

Further inland, a visit to UNESCO-protected Durmitor National Park will offer up the chance to see alpine species, Nutcrackers and Three-toed Woodpeckers while exploring the ancient coniferous forests covering much of this untouched mountainous region.

Your base for the week is the beautifully restored Villa Miela at Lake Skadar National Park – a prime site for birdwatching in its own right. Set high on the hillside above pretty lake village Virpazar, with panoramic views over mountain, valley and water, watch out for birds such as Rock Nuthatch from the terrace, or nature deck, and even the occasional eagle (Short-toed most common)! A well-stocked shared kitchen and outside gas BBQ provide self-catering facilities. Accommodation for our overnight at Durmitor is half-board at a small hotel on the edge of Zabljak.

This holiday supports wildlife conservation in Montenegro – for every booking, we donate 10%

Your expert guide

montenegro wildlife tour

Day 1, Sunday:

25 minute transfer from Podgorica airport to Villa Miela near Virpazar, Lake Skadar National Park. Group welcome dinner.

Day 2, Monday:

Boat trip to Europe’s most westerly colony of the Dalmatian Pelican – an endangered species and arguably the world’s largest water bird. In a private wooden motor boat, we will chug gently along Lake Skadar’s mirrored waters to reach the remote north eastern shores and this rare and magnificent bird’s breeding grounds. On the way we will stop by the roosting areas of Pygmy and Great Cormorants and are almost guaranteed to chance upon Glossy Ibis, Squacco Heron, Ferruginous Duck, Whiskered Tern and other species, while Scops Owl and raptors such as Short-toed Eagle are not unusual to see from here. Packed ‘brunch’ included.

Day 3, Tuesday:

In the morning we take a scenic drive above the lake’s stunning southern shores to look for species which frequent the rocky crags and corse Mediterranean shrub by the sides of the high mountain road: Subalpine Warbler, Cirl Bunting, Eastern Orphean, Black-eared Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush… From here, we head away from the lake for a visit to the Cijevna Canyon, just a half hour drive from Virpazar. This is one of the most beautiful karst rivers in the region, an Important Bird Area, with its water flowing all the way to Albania. We lunch at a restaurant set by gushing waterfalls before exploring this beautiful landscape (another Important Bird Area) and its avian life.

Day 4, Wednesday:

Visit to the Ulcinj Saltpans and Bojana Delta, Montenegro’s top site for waders and flamingo. Right by the border with Albania, close to Lake Skadar’s exit to the sea via the Bojana river, lies a series of shallow pans with next to no vegetation. They attract an exciting array of water birds (241 species recorded) including Greater Flamingo, Collared Pratincole, Kentish Plover, Black-winged Stilt and Roller. The site is an Important Bird Area, Ramsar site, and considered one of Europe’s most important locations for winter migration with its position on the Southeast Europe flyway. Lunch is at a fish restaurant on the banks of the Bojana river, where we later spend some more time spotting birds.

Day 5, Thursday:

Free day. Your personal time to relax and enjoy Villa Miela or head out on an excursion of your own choice. Several charming Venetian stone towns on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast are within easy reach.

Day 6, Friday:

We leave Virpazar early to drive north into the mountains, stopping on the way for lunch and a walk at Biogradska Gora National Park, home to one of Europe’s last primeval forests and a variety of bird species including Crested Tit, Yellow and Blue Tits, raptors including Imperial Eagle. From here we continue by road past the Tara Canyon, the second deepest in the world, and on to our accommodation in Durmitor National Park in time for dinner (included). This pleasant hotel is located at the edge of tourist centre Zabljak and has a wonderful view of valley, forest and mountains.

Day 7, Saturday:

We spend the morning exploring Durmitor’s UNESCO protected forests of conifer, juniper, fir and pine and looking out for some of the 163 bird species which have been recorded here: Black and Three-toed Woodpeckers, Nutcracker, Common Crossbill, Goshawk. In the afternoon, we begin the journey back to Virpazar and Lake Skadar via the impressive Skakavac waterfall. Overnight is at Villa Miela.

Day 8, Sunday:

Departure. Check out is at 10am.

Price – £ 890 per person.

Includes: accommodation for 7 nights, welcome dinner and 1 other evening meal, 5 guided birding excursions, lunches on excursion days, all transportation while in Montenegro. Flights not included. Single supplement £ 200.

The Center for the Study and Protection of Birds of Montenegro offers you more information about the birds of Montenegro.

When should you go bird watching?

Bird watching is easiest when they migrate, which happens at the end of February, April, and August - November, and when they are most active, which is the nesting season mostly March, June or July.

Get closer to rare bird species in the silence of protected areas

In Montenegro, you can observe an amazing 352 bird species! You'll be pleased to learn that the registered species in Montenegro account for 65 percent of the European ornitofauna! Start at the seashore and work your way up through salt flats, freshwater lakes, canyons, dense forests, mountain plateaus, and towering mountain peaks. Wherever you choose to go, you are in for a spectacular experience!

Did you know that every year, millions of birds fly over Montenegro? The reason for this is that our climate is situated along the vital Adriatic migration corridor. Bring your binoculars, field notebook, and species identification manual, and come to this ornithological paradise!

Birdwatching Montenegro

Discover Montenegro's south: lakes, fields, and the Adriatic coast

Visit the steppe-like habitats surrounding Podgorica, as well as deep canyons, long sandy beaches, lakes, and salt flats. Imagine riding in a traditional wooden boat while admiring the Skadar Lake's wildlife, which includes ibis, squacco heron, purple heron, whiskered tern, ferruginous duck, and black-crowned night heron.

Don't forget to consider the lake's unusually beautiful nature, which is home to 280 bird species. For a bird watching savant, we think that sums up a total of 280 reasons to go! Bird watching on the lake can also be arranged from specially constructed platforms at Stanaj, Žabljačke Livade, Plavnica, and Raduš.

Autumn and winter are the best times to go bird watching because large flocks of migratory birds fly over Skadar Lake during these seasons. The Skadar Lake National Park organizes bird watching, and announces bird watching events one day in advance .

Birdwatching pelican Montenegro

Your journey can continue further south - to the city of Ulcinj

Ulcinjska Solana is home to 240 different bird species. You can see collared pratincole, little tern, purple sandpiper, black-winged stilt, and other birds as you walk between the saltwater pools. Your journey can continue to the lovely Velika Beach, which is 13 km long. Birds such as the crested lark, Eurasian stone-curlew, and bee-eater can be seen while strolling through a nearby field. The beach itself provides breathtaking views of the sea, as well as the intoxicating scent of sea salt carried on the wind, and is home to common terns and other shorebirds.

Birdwatching flamingos Montenegro

Then on to Buljarica and beyond?

Try to spot a Levant sparrowhawk and a Eurasian reed warbler when visiting the fascinating beach Buljarica in Budva. Then, progress to Tivat's Solila and discover why the locals refer to it as the "sweet and salty oasis of peace." It holds approximately 114 species of birds to witness, and you might just see your favorite guest - flamingos . After this, head to Kotor and stroll through the Old Town and a tasting of traditionally prepared delicious seafood delicacies are essential experiences here.

Tivat Solila birdwatching Montenegro

Observe birds in Nikšić and Podgorica, as well as further north

If you are an avid bird watcher, don’t skip the Nikšić field which includes reservoirs Krupac, Slano, and Vrtac , on your way to Podgorica. Explore the valley of the river Zeta, as well as Ćemovsko Field in Podgorica.

Visit the national parks Durmitor, Biogradska Gora and Prokletije in the country's north. They not only have some of the most important climates for birds, but they also possess breathtaking views of mountain peaks, rainforests, deep canyons, and clear water from the most beautiful mountain lakes and rivers. You can unwind and relax while basking in the fragrances of nature and the enchanting flavours of traditional dishes, perhaps while staying in a katun or a rural household.

Birdwatching Montenegro

More interesting activities in nature:

Wellness bushcraft.

The purpose of bushcraft is to learn how we can overcome the challenges of survival in nature and see the wild as a friend rather than a threat. Think this is enough adventure for you? Then maybe it’s time to organize a quest to the woods, where you will forage for mushrooms and medicinal herbs, light fires for warmth, and get to chat with local shepherds while something delicious simmers under the open sky.

Wellness Herbalism

Want to learn about herbalism in Montenegro? Would it entice you to know that Montenegro is home to approximately 2,800 plant species and subspecies because of its numerous, diverse ecosystems?

Wellness Digital detox

Do you ever feel like your mobile phone's calendar has complete control over your life? If so, pack your bags and head to Montenegro to clear your mind, eat organic food, bathe in clean seawater, breathe mountain air - and re-discover yourself.

Adventure Biking

Montenegro has many bike paths, including strenuous sections, but the effort is always worthwhile! Ride up and down through dense beech and pine forests, across streams and meadows, valleys and canyon ridges, caravan roads and horse trails, past authentic architecture, fortifications, and stećaks (medieval tombstone monuments).

Montenegro Nature & Wildlife

montenegro wildlife tour

The untouched nature of Montenegro has many hidden treasures in the form of flora and fauna. The diverse relief and favorable climate attract various species of animals that have decided to make this area their habitat. Among these animals, there are tame and wild animals. As part of a recent project for the conservation of animals monitoring the situation of animals in the national reserve, Prokletije was carried out. Several species of wild mammals were successfully noted. Sparsely populated Montenegro is noted as a habitat for numerous mammals including bears, deer, martens, and wild pigs. It has many predatory wild animals, including wolves, foxes, and wildcats. The country also has a rich variety of birds, reptiles, and fish.

Learn more about Montenegro

Best time to visit montenegro.

Party to both Mediterranean summers and Balkan winters, the question of when to visit Montenegro really depends on what you’re after. The months of July and August referred to locally – and somewhat dramatically – as ‘the season’, see coastal tourism at full throttle with beaches, hotels and restaurants packed out by Europe’s summer sun seekers. As a result, either side of this period is the best time for a visit with May, June, September and October still enjoying balmy days, pleasant evenings and warm waters.

November through to April is the winter period when the inland temperature can drop to below freezing, but it also marks the opening of the country’s ski runs and the coast can present a scenic ( and quiet) getaway for the less adventurous.

Geography and environment

Montenegro’s slim 294km-long coastline quickly develops into inland plains before rising to forested mountain peaks – some of Europe’s most rugged – along the country’s borders with Serbia and Albania .

Top 5 creatures in Montenegro

Fairytale and soft-toy enthusiasts will be thrilled to learn that Montenegro is home to a stable population of European brown bears. Eternally vying with its polar cousin for the uber-cool title of ‘world’s largest land-based predator’, you may not like to encounter one unexpectedly (extremely unlikely), but it’s fun to know that they’re plodding about somewhere not too far off.

As the most widely distributed large mammal on the planet, it’s probably not overly surprising to hear that the country boasting Europe’s highest index of species per area unit should also have its share of grey wolves – even if the government has made it legal to hunt them.

Much like the tourists who descend on the country’s beaches during July and August, these curious and cheeky critters can sometimes be spotted breaching the surface of Montenegro’s freshwater lakes or basking by their shores. These little guys are so well-liked that in 2011, the Montenegrin Ministry of Culture launched ‘Otter Fest 2011’: a festival promoting the development of Skadar Lake’s local communities, which draws attention to its endangered otter population.

Probably the fluffiest of Montenegro’s wildlife, but with a dwindling population thought to be less than 100 due to illegal poaching, the Balkan lynx is only very rarely spotted in the remote mountainous region of the country’s east.

5. Golden eagles

Proudly emblazoned on the country’s flag, the majestic golden eagle is sometimes spied scouring its skies. One of the best-known birds of prey, it’s certainly one of the most powerful hunters, with reported sightings of sheep and goats being snatched up, and one confirmed account of a brown bear cub being carried off.
