ABOUT Satara

‘SATARA’ was the capital of the Maratha Empire in the 16th century. Spread over 14 lakh square kilometres, the land with a rich heritage, Satara is steeped in history.

Several great warriors, monarchs, saints, and renowned people have left their imprint on Maharashtra's history. It is also believed that Wai, in Satara district, is the ‘Viratnagari’ where Pandavas lived in the 13th year of their exile.

Satara and southern Maharashtra were ruled by Chalukyas of Badami and later by Rashtrakutas, Silaharas and Yadav of Devgiri, the Bahamanis, Adil Shahi, Muslim Rule, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj (Maratha rule), Chatrapati Shahu Ram Raja and Chatrapati Shahu II Pratapsinh.

As one of Maharashtra’s most visited tourist destinations, Satara is known for its historical significance and abundance of ancient forts, temples, and museums. When visiting Satara, there are numerous options for adventure seekers, nature enthusiasts, and travellers alike.

Nestled on the slopes of the Ajinkyatara fort, Satara offers a range of landscapes impacted by relief, climate, and deep and dark trees.

The seven forts (Sat-Tara) are the source of the city’s name, five among which are must-see for tourists, namely, Ajinkyatara, Pratapgad, Bhushangad, Kamalgad, and Sajjangad.

The old cultural and natural treasures of Satara include lakes, stunning waterfalls, bird sanctuaries, plateaus and some of the district's most popular tourist attractions.

Ancient structures, including forts and temples, are celebrated in Satara. Kaas Plateau- the world heritage site - and beautiful waterfalls are additional features.

Hill stations in Satara famous for their pleasant atmosphere and refreshing vibes are Wai, Panchgani, and Mahabaleshwar.

Satara Railway Station, on the Pune-Miraj line, is well-connected to other Indian cities. Satara may also be reached by regular trains from Mumbai and Pune.

The ideal time to visit and experience Satara is during the winter months of September to February.
