Can You Bring a Hair Dryer on a Cruise? (& Do You Even Need One?)

Are you trying to work out if your cruise line provides hair dryers, whether they are any good, and if you even need to take your own?

We have checked all the main cruise lines’ prohibited items and whether they provide them onboard, but in short:

Most heat-producing items are prohibited on cruise ships because they are considered a fire hazard.   However, hair dryers and other heated grooming products are allowed on all the main cruise lines.

You can double-check our list of all the main cruise lines which allow hair dryers on board.  We only found one that didn’t and another that often blew a fuse (see below).

The next question is, do you even need to take a hair dryer as many cruise lines provide them.

Below we go over where and what the cruise lines offer and what you should consider if you want to take your blow dryer.

Can You Take Hair Dryers In Your Carry-on Luggage?

You can take your hair dryer in your carry-on luggage, although you may not need to as cruises provide them in the cabins.

Can You Bring Hair Dryers On in Checked Luggage?

You can pack your hair dryer in checked luggage.   Bear in mind you cruise ships provide hairdryers in the cabins, so you may not need to take one and could use the weight and space for packing other items.

Can You Take Hair Dryers on a Plane?

For those flying to a port for any part of your vacation, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) allows you to take hair dryers in your carry-on and checked luggage. 

Which Cruise Lines Allow Hair Dryers Onboard

All the main cruise lines listed below allow you to bring a hair dryer on board with you in either your carry-on or checked luggage.

Of all the main cruise lines, the only one we found that did not allow hair dryers was Viking Cruises.

Can You Bring a Hair Dryer on the Norwegian Cruise?

Norwegian Cruises Lines (NCL) don’t expressly state whether you can bring a hair dryer on board. 

Passengers have reported taking their own however it was common for them to very easily blow a fuse in the rooms.

Are There Hair Dryers on Cruise Ships?

All the main cruise lines provide hair dryers in the cabins, but often they are very basic and weak in power. If you prefer using the better standard of hair dryers, such as Ionic or Ceramic, with varying temperature settings and accessories, consider bringing your own.

You’ll be pleased to know all the following lines do provide hair dryers:

Where Are the hair Dryers on a Cruise Ship?

If you can’t see your hair dryer in the cabin, it will either be attached to the wall on a desk or with a draw.  Sometimes they are also in bathroom cabinets.

Below we cover some of the main cruise lines and where the hair dryers are in the cabins.

Do Carnival Cruises Provide Hair Dryers?

They are quite small and not very powerful (1250 watts), so drying your hair may take longer than if you are used to a more powerful model and have long or thick hair.

Location: Carnival Cruise hair dryers are attached to the inside of the dressing area drawers or in the bathroom.

Does Royal Caribbean Have Hair Dryers?

All Royal Caribbean cabins have hair dryers.   The power is pretty low, and they are the type where you must keep your finger down on the button to power it.

Location: They are usually attached to the desk.

Do Celebrity Cruises Have Hair Dryers?

All Celebrity Cruises staterooms have hair dryers, although not very powerful.

Location: Wall-mounted in the bathrooms or portable one in a drawer. 

Do Disney Cruises Provide Hair Dryers?

There are handheld hair dryers in every cabin on a Disney cruise ship.

Do Norwegian Cruises Provide Hair Dryers?

There are handheld hair dryers in every cabin on Norwegian cruise ships.

If you take your own hair dryer, NCL ships have outlets for North American standard, 110 volts AC, and standard European 220/230 volts.

Are Hair Dryers Allowed on Viking Cruise?

Viking cruises are popular for both their river and ocean cruises.

Viking Cruises’ list of prohibited items states “Any electrical device that produces heat” and then lists several items, including heat pads, clothes irons , kettles, etc.

Although they specifically list “ curling irons ” as an “Allowable item,” there is no mention of hair dryers.

On a good note, Viking cruises hair dryers are considered some of the best and most powerful because they are plugged into 220-volt outlets, unlike most US cruise lines which are 110 volts.

What to do if There Is No Hair Dryer in Your Cabin

On rare occasions, your cabin might not have a hair dryer.  This is more likely to happen on older ships in a fleet that hasn’t been refurbished in a while.

If you are without a hair dryer, contact your cabin steward to request one.

How to Pack Your Hair Dryer

Hair dryers can be packed in both your carry-on and checked luggage.  If you are bringing your own, pack it in a padded bag or towel so it doesn’t get damaged in transit.

Here are a few other tips to keep in mind when packing your hair dryer:

  • If your hair dryer has a removable nozzle, take it off and pack it separately.
  • Pack your hair dryer after you have finished using it, so it is cooled down.
  • Ensure the cord is wrapped up securely, so it doesn’t get tangled.

Tips For Using Hair Dryer on Cruise Ship

Extension/Powerstrip: If you take your hair dryer, consider taking a powerstrip. There are often only 1 or 2 power sockets in the cabin, which may be needed for other devices, and you may want the option to use the hairdryer further away from the outlet.

Travel Mirror: Also, take a small travel mirror as often there is only one in the cabin, and it can be in a less than ideal position.

Compact: If you’re worried about packing space, some hair dryers these days come with a foldable handle.

If you take your hair dryer, don’t plug it into the bathroom if you have other alternatives as it may be too powerful for the outlet as these are designed for small appliances such as electric toothbrushes and razors and might blow a fuse.

Hair Dryer To Remove Wrinkles From Clothes

As you may know, many other heat-generating devices are prohibited onboard, including clothes steamers and irons.

Therefore a bonus for some people taking a more powerful hair dryer on their cruise is that they can use it to remove wrinkles from clothes.

The stronger the hair dryer, the more effective it will be.

You can do it while wearing the clothing item, gently pulling away from your body as you do so, and start at the lowest heat setting, gradually increasing it if needed.

Simply hold the hair dryer a few inches away from the item of clothing and move it around until the wrinkles have disappeared.  The hotter the temperature, the better, but be careful not to hold it too close, or you could scorch the fabric.

Or you can lay the clothing item flat on a bed or towels and, using the hair dryer, hold it about 6 inches away from the fabric and move it around. Again, start on a lower heat setting and increase as needed.

This works well for a few wrinkles on a shirt or dress, but don’t expect it to work miracles on a crumpled pile of clothes. It’s best used as a touch-up method before heading out for the day or evening.

Hello, cruise fans! Today we are talking about something that’s particularly interesting to women: hair dryers on cruise ships .

For those with long hair, a reliable hair dryer is crucial for quick and effective drying .

That’s why I’ve put together a guide to look at the types of hair dryers available across various cruise lines , evaluate their quality, and clarify whether you can bring your own from home.

Do cruise ships have hair dryers?

The answer is yes, basically all cruise ships have a hair dryer in the cabin.

As you can imagine, however, not all hair dryers are the same. I have been fortunate enough to go on many cruises and thus to try several ones.

I have to say that some, even though small, are very powerful and dry hair very well .

Other times I have come across some hair dryers that were of very poor quality and were little more than toys .

So let’s go right away to see a comparison between many of them .

Hair dryer on Royal Caribbean

Let’s start with Royal Caribbean . Unfortunately, the quality of the hair dryer on this cruise line is quite low .

When I tried it, I found it to be weak and also very uncomfortable , because you have to keep the button pressed continuously to make it work.

It is allowed to bring your own hair dryers onboard, however, I have had a bad experience with that.

Basically, my sister brought her Dyson on Symphony of the Seas and it worked just fine, but when she brought it on Wonder of the Seas it did not work in any outlet in our room . I think the outlets on some Roya Caribbean ships don’t have enough power.

My advice therefore is not to bring your hair dryer from home. It will take you a few extra minutes to dry your hair but remember that you are on vacation, there is no need to rush .

Hair dryer on Norwegian Cruise Line

A hair dryer that I really like is the one on Norwegian Cruise Line ships.

As you can see from the pics above, it is a very large and powerful one , it can reach 1800 W.

Moreover, it is one of the few hair dryers I have found on a cruise where you can adjust the power and heat settings .

What more can I say? You are allowed to bring your own hair dryer on NCL ships, but I wouldn’t recommend it; the one provided in your cabin is already of excellent quality .

Hair dryer on Carnival

Unfortunately, with Carnival , the quality drops again . The hair dryer you find on this cruise line is very similar (perhaps identical) to the one from Royal Caribbean that we discussed earlier.

It’s small , not very powerful (1250-watt), and uncomfortable to use .

As we’ve already seen in the article about hair straighteners and curling irons on cruises , Carnival allows you to bring your own hair dryer from home, but it must be in good condition and comply with safety standards . For example, hair dryers with damaged cords or broken buttons are not allowed.

Would I recommend bringing your own? If you have very long hair, it might be worth considering that .

Hair dryer on MSC Cruises

I like the hair dryer on MSC ships ; I’ve tried it several times and found it to be powerful and functional .

It’s by Valera , the same brand as the hair dryer on NCL ships. Compared to that one, this one is slightly smaller but still reaches a good power of 1800 W, even though it’s a travel version.

MSC Cruises also allows you to bring your own hair dryer, if you really want to.

Hair dryer on Princess Cruises

The last company I want to talk about is Princess Cruises . As you can see from the pic, these ships feature a hair dryer from the brand Drybar .

It’s a 1200-watt travel-size version with a foldable handle . I haven’t tried it myself, but I know it’s a fairly premium and expensive travel blow dryer . I’ve seen it in stores for around $100.

According to reviews I’ve received from some cruisers, it’s quiet, fast, and doesn’t leave your hair frizzy afterward . If you have tried it personally, let us know what you think in the comments at the end of the article.

Can you bring a diffuser on a cruise?

Sure, you can bring a diffuser on a cruise. I understand that many of you can’t do without one if you have curly hair.

It’s not among the prohibited items, but make sure to get one that fits the hair dryer you want to use .

I recommend the soft silicone ones that can adapt to all types of hair dryers. This way, you can use it without issues on any cruise ship.

Children & Accessibility

Norwegian Cruise Line will make every effort to accommodate you. However, to ensure your medical safety you must complete all travel before the 24th week of pregnancy. Please be aware that Norwegian Cruise Line will not be liable if you are denied boarding at the port nor will we be responsible or liable for any complications of pregnancy that occur during the cruise.

General Aqua Park, Water Slide, and Dry Slide Safety Rules:

  • No lifeguard on duty.
  • No running, jumping, or diving are permitted in the water slide or aqua park areas.
  • No beverages, food or glass are permitted.
  • Children in nappies or who are not toilet trained are not allowed on water slides or in the aqua park.
  • Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Guests must abide by all rules posted on signs in the water slide and aqua park areas.
  • Swimwear or dry wear with exposed zippers, buckles, rivets, or metal ornamentation are not permitted on any slides.
  • Remove all jewellery before entering any slide area.
  • Eyeglasses and sunglasses must be removed.
  • Participation in these activities is at your own risk.
  • Children, pregnant women, elderly persons, individuals on medications or who have underlying medical conditions, those suffering from heart ailments such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high or low blood pressure, anyone using anticoagulants, vasoconstrictors, vasodilators, stimulants, hypnotics, narcotics, tranquilizers, and those who are immune compromised, are warned against using the pool.

General Speedway Safety Rules:

  • Flat, fully closed footwear required (no flip flops, Crocs, or heels).
  • Riders must always wear a helmet.
  • Loose clothing is not allowed.
  • No age minimum, guests must only adhere to height requirements.
  • Hair longer than shoulder length must be tied back and hidden inside helmet.
  • Drug and alcohol consumption before driving are strictly prohibited.

Norwegian Bliss

  • Height requirements: Minimum is 55" (1.40m). Maximum is 82" (2.08m)
  • Weight requirements: No minimum. Maximum weight is 265lbs (120kgs)
  • There are no age or height restrictions to participate.
  • Fully closed footwear is required and shoes with high heels are not allowed.
  • Height requirements: Minimum is 40” (1.02m)
  • Weight requirements: No minimum. Maximum weight not to exceed 300lbs (136kgs) for both solo and double tube riders.
  • Height requirements: Minimum is 48” (1.22m)
  • Weight requirements: Minimum weight 120lbs (54kgs); Maximum weight is 300lbs (136kgs).

Norwegian Breakaway / Norwegian Getaway

  • Must be 48" (1.22m) or taller to be on the course without a chaperone.
  • Sky Tykes (child's course) available for under 48" (under 1.22m) and a chaperone must be present.
  • Weight requirements: No minimum; Max weight is 300lbs (136kgs)
  • Flat, fully closed footwear required (no flip flops, Crocs, or heels)
  • Weight requirements: Minimum is 99lbs (45kg); Maximum is 300lbs (136kg)
  • Weight requirements: No minimum; Maximum weight is 300lbs (136kg)
  • Height requirements: 40” (1.02m)

Norwegian Joy

  • Minimum/maximum height and weight requirements vary for each attraction and will be enforced.
  • Height requirements: Minimum height is 36" for most games.
  • Weight requirements: No minimum weight; Maximum weight is 300lbs (136kgs).
  • Weight requirements: No minimum weight. Maximum weight is 265lbs (120kgs)
  • Weight requirements: No minimum; Maximum weight not to exceed 300lbs (136kgs) for both solo and double tube riders.

Norwegian Encore

  • Height requirements: Minimum is 55” (1.40m); Maximum is 82” (2.08m)

Norwegian Pearl / Norwegian Gem

  • Height requirements: Minimum is 42” (1.07m)
  • Weight requirements: No minimum weight; Maximum weight is 270lbs (122kgs)

No, Norwegian doesn't offer babysitting but instead offers Group Sitting Services for children ages 3 -12 years old every night from 10:30pm - 1:30am (Late Night Fun Zone) and on port days whilst the ship is docked.

Temporarily Not Available

On Port Days , a minimal fee is charged only during scheduled meal time per the activity booklet.

Nightly at Late Night Fun Zone, there is an hourly fee of $6.00 USD per hour, per child and $4.00 USD per hour, per child for each additional sibling.

Parents are encouraged to sign up in advance for both services. If no children are signed up or dropped off by 11:30 pm for the nightly service, the youth centre will close for the evening. The fees are charged to your on-board account. Fifteen minute transition time is offered before charges apply from Splash Academy to Late Night. Both services are run by the Youth Staff in the Splash Academy Facility.

Liquor & Beverage Policy

On itineraries that include ports of call in the U.S., Canada or China, guests must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol. Within the Open Bar (either chosen as part of Free at Sea or purchased separately) alcoholic beverages are only included for guests 21 years of age and older in these destinations. On all other cruises this regulation applies to guests aged 18 years and above with the exception of guests who are U.S., Canadian and Chinese nationals. On cruises that include ports of call in the U.S., Canada or China and with the exception of Alaska and Hawai`i itineraries, NCL permits young adults between 18 and 20 years of age to purchase and personally consume wine and beer only whilst on board and with the consent of an accompanying parent. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk on embarkation.

China/Asia: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is NOT permitted for guests 18 to 20 whilst in China/ Asia waters.

Australia/New Zealand: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to serve or sell only beer and wine whilst in international waters.

All guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on board our ships with the exception of champagne and wine. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports of call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase(s) and on the final night of the cruise it will be available for pickup in a designated area. Please note that for wine and champagne brought on board by you, a corkage fee will apply if consumed on board.

NCL encourages the responsible use of alcohol and accordingly reserves the right to permanently or temporarily revoke the drinking privileges of any guest who violates NCL's Guest Code of Conduct or who is deemed a danger to himself, herself or others by vessel management. Continued abuse of alcohol whilst sailing and/or violation of NCL's alcohol policy may result in immediate disembarkation.

Effective for sailings July 15, 2016 and beyond, guests are prohibited from bringing any beverages -- including liquor, beer and non-alcoholic drinks such as water, soda and juices -- on board either as carry-on or checked luggage, with the exception of purified or distilled water in factory-sealed containers for use in conjunction with medical devices or for the reconstitution of infant formula; and fully sealed and/or corked wine bottles for personal consumption onboard that is subject to screening and a corkage fee (for guests 21 years of age or older). Open beverages of any kind must be consumed or discarded at the security check-point, on embarkation day and at any port of call. This revised policy brings the company in line with other best practise travel security protocols and reduces the need for individual time consuming screening and package inspection of large volumes of beverages.

Why the change in policy? The inspection of large volumes of beverages has an impact on the embarkation process and security resources. As one example, guests who attempt to smuggle alcoholic beverages onboard often try to do so in beverage containers. This means all beverages must be personally screened, taking both time and dedicated personnel. This modified policy will now bring us in line with other travel industry procedures for transporting beverages and allow security personnel to focus on other screening efforts and not individually inspecting all beverages being brought onboard. What if I purchase a beverage in a port of call? Guests will not be permitted to bring any beverages onboard the ship in ports of call and any locally-purchased beverages will be disposed of prior to embarkation. No open containers of beverages, including water, will be allowed onboard during a port of call. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports-of-call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase and either on the final night of the cruise or the morning of debarkation it will be available for pick up in a designated area. What happens if I bring a case of water to the ship? Guests who bring beverages to embarkation will be directed to return the items to their vehicle. If the guest does not have a vehicle onsite, the items will be disposed of. If I need to bring water or milk onboard for a medical reason or infant, what’s the process? Guests who have special needs, medical requirements, or families with infants who require water for formula or milk, should contact the access desk at [email protected] to verify if an exception can be made for their beverage and to obtain pre-approval to provide to security at embarkation. Is the water onboard safe to drink? All of our ships produce water in accordance with the guidelines and requirements as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Public Health Service, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Centre for Environmental Health. Can I still bring wine on board? Yes, guests may bring sealed bottles of wine on board for personal consumption. They will be checked prior to embarkation and a corkage fee applied at that time of $15.00 USD for a 750 ml Bottle or $30.00 USD for a 1,500 ml Magnum bottle. Box wines are not allowed on board. Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee. Why can I bring wine but not other beverages? As very few guests bring wine onboard, the team is able to easily and quickly screen these items.

Wine & Champagne Policy 

Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board. When bottles are brought on board and served or consumed in any restaurant, public room area or in their stateroom, a corkage fee will be charged according to bottle sizes noted below.

750 ml Bottle: $15.00 USD

1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 USD

Wine or champagne sent directly to the ship by travel agents, friends, family, etc. or from another retail source, are subject to the same fees. Box wines are not allowed on board.

Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee.

Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol whilst in US sailings.

Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to consume only beer and wine whilst vessels is in international waters. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel. In Alaska and Hawaii waters parental consent is NOT permitted for guests 18 to 20 years old.

Europe sailing permits young adults 18 to 20 to purchase and personally consume alcohol whilst onboard.

Money Matters

We are confident that you will enjoy your Freestyle Cruising experience and that our entire crew will provide you with the standard of service for which we are known. A discretionary service charge will be automatically added per guest per day (for guests three years and older) to your shipboard account for all staterooms: US$ 20 per guest per day (for guests 3 years and older) for Studios, Inside, Oceanview and Balcony Staterooms as well as Club Balcony Suites. For Suites and The Haven Suites, the service charge will be US$ 25 per guest per day (for guests 3 years and older). This charge will be shared amongst those staff members, including the restaurant staff, stateroom stewards and other behind-the scenes staff who provide services that enhance your overall cruise experience.

These service charges can be paid in advance of your cruise. If you have any concerns about the service you receive during your cruise, please let our onboard Guest Services Desk staff know right away, so we can address any issues in a timely manner. In the unlikely event that we can't resolve your issue, you can have the service charge adjusted on board. Where your service charge has been pre-paid before departure, refunds are not available on board and you must apply for a refund, if applicable, after you return home by writing to our Guest Relations department.

Certain staff positions (e.g., concierge, butler, youth programme staff and beverage service) provide service on an individual basis to only some guests and do not benefit from the overall service charge. We encourage those guests to acknowledge good service from these staff members with appropriate gratuities.

Additionally, there is a 20% gratuity and spa service charge added for all spa and salon services, as well as a 20% gratuity and beverage service charge added for all beverage purchases and a 20% gratuity and speciality service charge added to all speciality restaurant dining and entertainment based dining (does not apply to Free at Sea dining and drinks packages).

The currency used on board our ships is the U.S. dollar. We've made paying for on-board expenses very easy. When you check in you open a shipboard account by registering a major credit card such as VISA®, MasterCard® or American Express® . If you prefer to pay by cash or traveller's cheques, a suggested deposit for a 7-night cruise is US dollar 300 per person, US dollar 150 per person for cruises up to 6 nights or US dollar 450 per person for cruises of 8 nights and more at check-in (subject to change). Then, you simply sign for your personal expenses as you go and they will be charged to your account.

Important : When your credit card is entered to activate your on-board account, an initial approval is obtained from the bank. Please be advised that some banks may hold the pre-authorisation for up to 30 days. Throughout the voyage incremental holds will be obtained based on your on-board expenditure. This will reduce the amount of available credit on the credit card or restrict the availability of cash in your bank account.

Travellers cheques and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit. Proper ID is required when cashing travellers cheques. We recommend you carry a small amount of local currency when visiting foreign ports, although credit cards are commonly accepted in shops and restaurants.

Guests sailing to Hawaii will be charged an additional 4.275% Pre Paid Service Charge GET Tax.

Norwegian Cruise Line has introduced an enhanced room service menu. The new menu offers an expanded selection for breakfast, in addition to a wider variety of options available 24 hours. Individual items on the menu remain available on a complimentary basis and a convenience charge of up to $9.95 USD will be added to each order placed. There is a $4.95 Room Service Breakfast fee is fleetwide for all breakfast room service orders Orders placed by guests sailing in the Haven & Suites staterooms are not subject to the service fee*. For your convenience, all shipboard expenses are charged to your Onboard account. Sign up when you check in, establishing your method of payment with Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB Card, Diner's Club. You may also use your debit card however please be advised that we obtain pre-authorisation, as we do for all Credit Cards, and some banks hold these funds for up to 30 days. The maximum initial pre-authorisation amount for all credit and debit cards is $300. Cash can also be used as a method of payment to settle your account with an initial deposit paid in advance.

  • Norwegian does not recommend the use of a debit card as payment for your onboard folio.
  • Please be advised that multiple holds will be placed on your debit card account based on your onboard purchases.
  • After settling your onboard folio, these debit card holds may remain on your account up to 30 days after the cruise ends.
  • To avoid overdraft charges from your bank, please make sure that you have enough available funds in your account during this hold period.
  • Norwegian will not be responsible for overdraft charges resulting from holds placed on Debit Card accounts.

Once you have exceeded the deposited amount, your account will be closed to further charges. You can deposit as much money as often as you'd like throughout the cruise, however, refunds cannot be made until the day of disembarkation for any excess.

  • Forward - faces the front of the boat
  • Gangway - allows you access on and off the ship
  • Garden Villa (3 bedroom) - The largest suites at sea with up to 5,000 square feet of living space at the top of the ship.
  • Knot - a nautical mile (see Nautical below)
  • Leeward - the side of the ship that is out of or away from the wind
  • Midship - the middle of the ship
  • Muster - to come together or assemble aboard ship for inspection or roll call
  • Muster Station - a specific location on ship to gather, based on stateroom assignment
  • Nautical - of or having to do with sailors, ships, or navigation. A unit of speed of one nautical mile (6,076.12 feet or 1,852 metres) an hour: abbrev. kn or kt [to average a speed of 10 knots]
  • Pier - a structure built out over the water and supported by pillars or piles: used as a landing place.
  • Port - the left-hand side of a ship as one faces forward: opposed to starboard. Port - so named because the side toward the port (dock), since the steering oar (see starboard) prevented docking to the right.
  • Port of Call - regular stopover(s) on a cruise itinerary.
  • Purser - a ship's officer in charge of accounts, freight, tickets, etc., esp. on a passenger vessel. Important to you - a Purser takes responsibility for all money, transactions.
  • Port - the left hand side of the ship whilst facing forward (bow). Easy to remember since "port" and "left" each have four letters.
  • Ship - You always cruise on a "ship", never a "boat"
  • Spa Suite - A luxurious suite only found aboard Norwegian Epic that features an ocean view whirlpool tub, balcony, complimentary, nearby access to the Thermal Suites at Mandara Spa and keycard access to the private Courtyard area
  • Starboard - the right side of the ship whilst facing forward (bow).
  • Stateroom - your cabin or berth
  • Stern - the very back of the ship
  • Studios - Norwegian Epic's private keycard access complex comprised of staterooms designed and priced for the solo traveller. Also includes access to the private Studio Lounge.
  • Studio Lounge - A private lounge aboard Norwegian Epic reserved exclusively for Studio guests. This is a place to relax, watch TV, have a drink and meet fellow Studio guests.
  • Tender - a boat for carrying passengers to or from a ship close to shore.
  • Windward - on the side of the ship from which the wind blows; toward the wind
  • No running, jumping or diving are permitted in the pool area
  • Showers are required prior to use and recommended after use.
  • According to United States Public Health (U.S.P.H.) regulations, no nappies of any kind are permitted in the swimming pools or jacuzzis, including those marketed as "swimmers".
  • Guests must follow the rules posted on all signs in the pool or hot tub/whirlpool area.
  • Children under 16 require adult supervision at all times whilst using the hot tub.

Do Norwegian ships have adult only pools?

Are nappies of any type allowed in pools or hot tubs on norwegian ships, are floating devices allowed in pools on norwegian ships, are pools and hot tubs on norwegian ships chlorinated or salt water, are there lifeguards at pools on norwegian ships, are norwegian pools and hot tubs/whirlpools handicap accessible.

Shore Excursions and speciality dining can be purchased by guests sailing on any Norwegian ship. In addition, guests sailing on the Norwegian Epic will have the option to pre-purchase onboard Entertainment and Spa activities.

How do I book my Dining, Entertainment and Spa activities prior to sailing?

Onboard activities can be booked online at ncl.com/myncl; by calling 00800 0310 21 21 (for Shore Excursions) and 00800 0310 21 21 for Spa (Norwegian Epic only), Dining and Entertainment, or by contacting your travel professional.

Please note: Speciality dining can be pre-booked online for parties of up to eight guests. If you'd like to pre-book speciality dining for larger parties, please call us at 00800 0310 21 21 for assistance. Our reservation agents will also be able to assist you if you would like to pre-book speciality dining for your group using more than one credit card.

Who will be asked to purchase cruise activities with a credit card?

Ticketed passengers who (1) purchased the cruise in US dollars, CAN dollars, GBP or Euro's, and (2) do not have a Shore Excursion, Dining or Entertainment reservation on record prior to June 29, 2011. Guests who do not meet all of these criteria will be able to pre-book activities, but will not be asked for payment at the time of booking.

Will my charges to my credit card be refunded if I cancel my bookings prior to sailing?

Cancellations made up to 24 hours prior to sailing will be refunded in full to the credit card on which the purchase was made. To cancel prepaid reservations prior to sailing, please call 866-896-3152 (for Shore Excursions) and 00800 0310 21 21 (for Dining, Entertainment and Spa). Cancellations made after that point will be refunded as an onboard credit. What is the cancellation process once I’m on board?

Shore Excursions: Guests that cancel on board more than 48 hours prior to the tour will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. Tours cancelled by guests less than 48 hours prior to arrival in the port where the tour is scheduled are non-refundable. Please note that certain tours, such as overland tours, customised tours and tours with theatre performances or special events may be subject to different cancellation fees. To make a cancellation on board or for additional details, please visit the Shore Excursion Desk.

Dining/Entertainment: Guests that cancel on board more than 24 hours prior to the booked activity will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. If a cancellation is made less than 24 hours prior to the activity, no refund will be issued. To make a cancellation on board, please visit the Guest Services Desk.

Spa: Guests that cancel on board more than 24 hours prior to the booked activity will receive a refund for their purchase in the form of an onboard credit. Failure to do so may result in a cancellation charge up to 50% of the treatment price being assessed to your onboard account. Will there be any cancellation fees if I cancel my onboard activity?

How do I make Restaurant Reservations on board?

Reservations may be made by phone, in person at the designated Restaurant Reservations Desk, or at any speciality restaurant host desk during dinner service.

To ensure that our guests receive our best service, we can only hold your dinner reservation for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, the unclaimed reservation will be released. For dinner reservations made on board, the full cover price per guest will be charged to the guest's account. For pre-paid reservations, no refund will be issued.

What is the Air Promotion & Who is Eligible?

This promotion allows guests to buy airfare for the first guest and get airfare for the second guest for free. It is applicable to select 7+ night sailings.

Bookings must be made more than 110 days prior to sailing to qualify. Guests may choose round-trip or one-way flights at promotional rates. Land packages and cruise tours must be added no later than 75 days prior to embarkation.

The promotion applies to guests 1-2 on the reservation and is not applicable to categories IX, OX, BX, or MX (Sail Away Categories). Solo travellers receive 50% off promotional airfare each way. It is not valid for guests 3-8; they will pay the full promotional airfare amount.

What about Ground Transportation and Air Deviation Requests?

The Free Airfare promotion covers airfare and does not include ground transportation from the airport to the pier (and back). Ground Transportation is automatically added as an additional cost when airfare is chosen. If you decide to stay additional days pre/post cruise, ground transportation fees can be modified after booking. If you cancel your cruise, the fees are refunded. See the cancellation grid for more detail.

Air Deviation requests can be added up to 75 days prior to travel for a maximum of 2 days pre/post cruise. An air credit of $25 per guest per deviation will be applied to your reservation. Excludes any 2nd guest flies free offer. Date deviations can be added up to 75 days prior to embarkation. Please note that the addition or removal of a pre or post cruise deviation for bookings with air may result in the price of air changing. When requesting a Deviation, guests are responsible for airport transfers at an additional cost if selected.

Can you provide more details about the Air Promotion?

Air Promotion applies to economy, round-trip flights from select departure gateways only and will automatically apply. Air gateway(s) must be entered to prompt the promotional airfare.

If all guests in the stateroom are travelling from the same originating airport and arriving to the same destination airport, then they will be booked on the same flight.

Flights are booked and can be ticketed up to 30 days before sailing.

Norwegian books the airline for you.

The combination of travel services offered to you is a package within the meaning of the Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018.

Therefore, you will benefit from all EU rights applying to packages. NCL (Bahamas) Ltd which trades as Norwegian Cruise Line will be fully responsible for the proper performance of the package as a whole.

Additionally, as required by law, NCL (Bahamas) Ltd has protection in place to refund your payments and, where transport is included in the package, to ensure your repatriation in the event that it becomes insolvent.

Peace of Mind

Guests booked on a full-ship charter to sail aboard a Norwegian Cruise Line ship are not eligible for this offer. Any full-ship charter guests during this period should contact their charter company or programme operator directly with any questions.

FCCs from either suspended sailings or Peace of Mind can’t be converted into another currency.

Absolutely. However, for FCCs associated with the Peace of Mind policy, the FCC must be first generated and attached to the guest profile before it can be added to a reservation. It can then be applied to any new or existing reservation or group booking.

Yes. The policy applies to existing and active bookings or sailings with embarkation dates through and including May 31, 2022. The deadline to use Peace of Mind is January 31, 2022.

Applicable refunds will be returned to the original form of payment sixty (60) days after the request for the refund has been made. Policies for bookings made through Tour Operators or Wholesalers may vary, so please contact your Travel Partner for full details.

Cruise Casual: the Freedom of Freestyle Cruising

Dress cruise casual anytime during the day, in the buffet and in most speciality restaurants. For women, it includes summer and casual dresses, skirts, regular or capri pants, shorts, jeans and tops. The currency used on board our ships is US dollar. We've made paying for on-board expenses very easy. When you check in you open a shipboard account by registering a major credit card - VISA®, MasterCard® or American Express®. Please be advised that an initial as well as incremental holds throughout the voyage will be placed on your card account based on your on-board purchases. This will reduce the amount of available credit on the card. After settling your on-board folio, these card holds may remain on your account for up to 30 days after the cruise ends.

Authorisation-hold releases are solely within the discretion of your lending institution. If you prefer to pay by cash or traveller's cheques, a suggested deposit for a 7-day cruise is US dollar 300 per person, US dollar 150 per person for cruises up to 6 days or US dollar 450 per person for cruises of 8 days and more at check-in (subject to change). Then, you simply sign for your personal expenses as you go and they will be charged to your account.

Personal Cheques, debit cards or currencies other than the US dollar are not accepted on board, Any excess deposit will be refunded at the end of the cruise in US dollar. Please also keep in mind that it's always worth having a small amount of local currency for immediate expenses on arrival at your destination and for any purchases you make at your ports of call. Traveller's cheques and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit.

In order to comply with government regulations covering departure manifests, be sure to register online through our website ( www.ncl.eu ) after you have paid in full and before you leave on your Norwegian Cruise Line holiday. We strongly recommend that guests complete their Online Check-In at least one day before sailing, as otherwise they may be subject to an extended check-in procedure at the cruise terminal or may even be denied boarding.

We welcome guests with special needs. The information you are provided with about your holiday (which may be on our website, in our brochures or elsewhere) before you make your booking will include a general indication of the suitability of the holiday for someone with reduced mobility. However, reduced mobility of course means different things to different individuals as we fully appreciate that individual capabilities, restrictions and requirements will vary considerably. If you suffer from reduced mobility or any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday, please give us full details before booking so that we can provide you with precise information as to the suitability of the holiday taking into account your specific needs. Guests who have significant mobility impairments should travel with someone who will take responsibility for any assistance needed during the cruise and in the event of an emergency. Any assistance provided by Norwegian Cruise Line, its team members or service providers does not form part of the contracted services unless agreed differently in writing or where required by legal regulations (for example, in accordance with EU regulation 1107/2006 dated 5 July 2006 on the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air and EU regulation 1177/2010 dated 24 November 2010 concerning the rights of passengers when travelling by sea). Any special requirements which we have accepted will be specifically confirmed as accepted on your confirmation invoice. Unless and until specifically confirmed as accepted, all special requests and requirements are subject to availability and do not form part of the contracted services.

We have a limited number of staterooms per ship that are wheelchair accessible with grab rails in the bathrooms, lower sinks and toilets, shower seats, raised beds, adjustable hanging rods in wardrobes, tilting mirrors and extra wide doors for easy access.

If you do use a wheelchair, you must bring your own and it must be collapsible. If you do not wish to bring your own wheelchair on board, please contact our U.S.-based supplier Scooteround on 001 (888) 441 7575 to arrange delivery of one to the ship. All wheelchairs and scooters must be stored in your stateroom; they cannot be left in the hallway or any other public area. To ensure the safety of our guests and crew, wheelchairs may not be used to transfer from the ship to a tender. Guests in wheelchairs may consequently not be able to participate in certain activities or shore excursions in tender ports. Norwegian Cruise Line can only accept certain types of wheelchairs on board. Please see www.ncl.eu/about/accessible-cruising for further information. All guests who require medical equipment to be brought on board must advise Norwegian Cruise Line before sailing. Failure to do so may result in equipment not being cleared before departure.

For hearing-/ vision-impaired guests, we have a limited number of staterooms with vibrating alarm clocks and a flashing light system alerting guests to fire alarms. For the vision-impaired, we allow registered guide dogs on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships (airline and international quarantine restrictions may apply and should be checked before booking your cruise).

Guests who need oxygen or require oxygen therapy are welcome on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships; however, you must supply your own oxygen. U.S.-based Special Needs at Sea is the only company allowed to deliver and supply oxygen to Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Let us know at the time of booking that you'll be bringing oxygen on board, then contact Special Needs at Sea at 001 954 585 0575 to arrange delivery to the ship.

Any physical challenge or medical condition that requires special treatment or attention must be reported to Norwegian Cruise Line at the time of booking. For certain conditions we ask for medical declaration and liability forms. Due to unpredictable circumstances at sea, Norwegian Cruise Line must reserve the right to refuse or revoke passage to anyone who, based upon objective standards, is in a physical or mental condition that jeopardises the safe operation of the vessel, who poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others or who may require care beyond that which Norwegian Cruise Line can provide.

For guests with diabetes, refrigerators suitable for storing insulin are available in all staterooms except Studios (category T1 and T8).

If you are on a low calorie diet, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus feature low calorie, haute cuisine dishes. Sugar-free and fat-free desserts are also available. Gluten-free, lactose-free, sodium-free, Kosher and dairy-free diets can also be catered for and must be requested at least two months before your cruise. For further information see www.ncl.eu .

All requirements stated below apply at the time of embarkation. Infants sailing on board a Norwegian Cruise Line vessel must be at least six months of age. However, for voyages that have three or more consecutive days at sea, the infant must be at least 12 months old.

When on board, a minor is defined as an individual under 18 years of age at the time of embarkation. A young adult is defined as an individual between the ages of 18 and 20. Please note that this does not relate to child pricing, where the age is 2-17 years old.

Company policy states that on itineraries that include a port in the United States of America, Canada or China guests under 21 years of age must be accompanied in the same, connecting, or side by side stateroom by a guest who is 21 years of age or older at the time of embarkation (staterooms opposite of each other are not applicable under this policy). For all other cruises this regulation applies to all guests under 18 years of age with the exception of guests who are citizens of the United States of America, Canada or China. For guests under the age of 18 travelling with an accompanying adult, who is not the minor’s parent or legal guardian, a Parent/Guardian Release Form (available here: www.ncl.eu/ParentGuardianForm ) that authorises the minor’s travel and further authorises medical treatment in case of an emergency must be given to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier during check-in. Failure to present the completed form at embarkation may result in boarding being denied, with no refund provided.

On cruises that include a Canadian port, guests under 18 travelling with a single parent have to provide a letter of approval (preferably notarised) from the parent not travelling. Note: Two people under the age of 21 may travel together in the same stateroom if they are a married couple and provide proof of marriage to a Norwegian Cruise Line representative at the pier before embarkation.

Children under 16 years of age are not allowed to enter the fitness centre. The minimum age for use of the Casino and the Thermal Spa (sauna, steam room, hot tubs) is 18. Some bars and lounges on board Norwegian Epic and Breakaway (Plus)-Class ships, for example Spice H2O, are adult only (18 and over). Lifeguards monitor the family pools during scheduled pool hours. However it is strongly recommended that all children under 12 have adult supervision at all times. The safety of all children (up to the age of 18) is the responsibility of their parent(s) or other accompanying adult(s) irrespective of whether a lifeguard is on duty.

For safety reasons children must not be left unattended on board when their parents or other accompanying adults go ashore.

Norwegian Cruise Line's liability is limited by international conventions and EU regulations, its terms and conditions and conditions of carriage. We therefore recommend purchasing appropriate travel, health and luggage insurance before your cruise.

Guests are responsible for ensuring they fulfil all passport and visa requirements for all countries visited during the cruise and when travelling to and from the port of embarkation/disembarkation. EU citizens need a full e-passport issued by an EU member state (also applicable for children of any age). A passport is also required for all European sailings (exception: citizens of Schengen States cruising on itineraries that do not leave EU territory).

The US Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) enables eligible citizens and nationals of designated countries to travel to the US for tourism amd business stays of 90 days or less without first obtaining a visa. Travellers who do not qualify for the VWP must obtain a visa to travel to the United States. Should you need to obtain a visa, please be sure to apply for a multiple entry visa.

The Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) is effective for citizens and eligible nationals of VWP countries to apply for advance authorisation to travel to the United States under the VWP. ESTA stipulates that all Visa Waiver Programme travellers are required to obtain via the internet ( https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov ) an electronic travel authorisation prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. under the VWP. Countries currently enroled in the VWP include the UK, Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal and Sweden, amongst others but not all EU member states. ESTA authorisations are valid for multiple entries within two years (or less if the passport expires during this period). Please note that U.S. authorities will charge a fee of US$ 21 per person (status: May 2019) for travel authorisation. This fee has to be paid by credit card during the application process. Additional information regarding the VWP and ESTA is available at www.cbp.gov/esta . For U.S.-bound Atlantic Crossings, we strongly advise guests to print out their ESTA before travelling, as this is a requirement at check-in before you can board the ship.

All travellers (including children) must have an e-passport to use the Visa Waiver Programme. An e-Passport, denoted by the respective symbol, is an enhanced secure passport with an embedded electronic chip. E-Passports are issued by the proper passport issuing authority and must meet international standards for securing and storing information corresponding to the passport and bearer. Please be aware that immigration and visa regulations are subject to change. The information above refers to the status at the time of printing. It is assumed that the traveller is a citizen of a Visa Waiver country. For all citizens of non-Visa Waiver countries, you will have to check individual treaties between your state and the U.S. Government and whether you have to apply for a special tourist visa with the U.S. embassy of your home state. Please consider that the application for a visa could take up to three months. Similarly to the U.S. VWP, since October 15, 2016, Canada requires visa-exempt foreign nationals who fly to or via Canada to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) prior to travel for a fee of CAD 7 per person. The ETA is valid for multiple entries within five years (or less if the passport expires during this period). For information please visit www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit .

All travellers who are not citizens of a VWP country please check your individual passport and immigration / visa requirements with your travel agent and the respective embassies or consulates. Personal circumstances cannot be considered. We will try within our means to inform you of the applicable requirements. During most cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line personnel will need to retain your passport. You therefore have to carry a second government-issued photo ID with you at all times. It is the sole responsibility of the guest to provide all necessary documentation. Guests are not entitled to a refund if entry into any foreign territory or boarding is denied by immigration officials or Norwegian Cruise Line personnel for lack of proper documents.

The American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has implemented the Secure Flight Programme for international air traffic. This programme intends to reduce the instances of misidentification of the travel authorised passengers to the U.S. as well as to enhance the security of air travel. Within this programme, all airlines commit to transmit the following Secure Flight Passenger Data (SFPD) from travellers which are arriving in and/or departing from the U.S. to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security: Full name as per valid government-issued passport (including middle name, initials), date of birth, gender and Redress Number (if applicable). Therefore we ask all guests to check their confirmation carefully. In case of any incorrect data appearing on the confirmation, please contact our reservations department. If there is no client data available at the time of booking, Norwegian Cruise Line will use the data from the Online Check-In. For further information on the Secure Flight Programme please visit http://www.tsa.gov/secureflight . Providing the Secure Flight Data does not release you from the obligation to apply for the advanced authorisation to travel to the U.S. under the ESTA programme programme or to obtain a visa if the VWP does not apply to your visit.

A visa is required for some of our destinations in Asia, Australia & New Zealand visited on your cruise. The relevant information can be found here: CIBTvisas ( http://cibtvisas.de/leisure-eu-splash ). The required visas can be requested via the visa and passport service provider CIBTvisas ( http://cibtvisas.de/leisure-eu-splash ). If you would like to explore St. Petersburg individually, you can also request the corresponding visa via CIBTvisas. Additionally, all cruise guests sailing from a U.S. port to Cuba require a Cuban visa which needs to be obtained prior to your cruise. Please ask at time of booking or contact CIBTvisas. In all cases a fee applies. For cruises to Cuba, guests also need to document that they fulfil the requirements concerning cultural exchanges by completing a self-certification form which must be received by Norwegian Cruise Line at least 3 days prior to the cruise departure. Guests will not be able to board the vessel without having first completed the certification form. Guests are responsible for ensuring they are in possession of all relevant documentation and visas for the entire cruise itinerary including all ports of call.

Customs allowances may vary depending on the itinerary. Please check on board, with your Ministry of Foreign Affairs or with the respective customs authorities for the most up-to-date information.

A Guarantee stateroom (GTY) is one where there is no stateroom number assigned at the time of booking. A stateroom may be assigned any time after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing. A Guarantee stateroom guarantees you a stateroom in the category you have paid for (Inside, Oceanview etc.). It does not guarantee deck, location or specific bed arrangements. Once the stateroom has been assigned, there will be no changes.

Arrival at the Cruise Terminal: For your comfort and convenience, we recommend that guests who have not completed their Online Check-In arrive at the cruise terminal no later than two (2) hours prior to the scheduled embarkation time printed on your cruise documents. Guests who have completed their Online Check-In should arrive at the terminal no later than one (1) hour prior to the scheduled embarkation time printed on your cruise documents. We STRONGLY recommend guests complete their Online Check-In at least four (4) days prior to sailing.

Final Boarding Time: In order to facilitate the embarkation process, the processing of your eDocs, and to comply with new government regulations governing departure manifest, all guests are required to complete check-in at the cruise terminal and be onboard the ship no later than one hour prior to the departure time noted on their cruise documents or they will not be permitted to sail . Please note that guests who have not filled out their Online Check-In must arrive at the port two (2) hours prior to sailing.

Joining or debarking the ship at any time outside of the published embark/debark port is not permitted for the following reasons:

  • Itineraries are subject to change without notice.
  • Violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), if applicable.

Approval to embark or disembark mid-cruise may be allowed only in cases of emergencies. Please note that embarking or disembarking mid-cruise may result in a violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), resulting in a fine starting at $798 per person.

Boarding Time in Ports of Call: In all ports of call, it is also the guest's responsibility to be back onboard the ship no later than one (1) hour prior to the ship's scheduled departure time. Please be aware that shipboard time may differ from the port of call and it is the guest's responsibility to follow the shipboard time. In the event a guest misses the ship, it will be the guest's responsibility to pay all expenses incurred to rejoin the ship.

Partial Transfer Requests must also include the following info:

  • Once the transfer takes place, the receiving guest is now the owner and the previous owner cannot request a transfer back.

Absolutely. However, for FCCs associated with these affected cruises, the FCC must be first generated and attached to the guest profile. Once the FCC is added to the guest profile, FCCs can then be applied to any existing booking or newly created booking.

Whilst we understand this change may cause some out of pocket and unexpected expenses for affected guests, they will not be reimbursed for those costs. We recommend that guests who purchased travel protection or independent travel insurance submit a claim through their carrier.

No, guests will receive the full value of their winning bid within the FCC and can apply that towards the sailing and category of their choice. Guests can then participate in a new bid once invited to bid for the newly selected sailing.

The original FCC amount will be returned to the guests' profile. If an affected booking has a previously applied FCC (as a result of a previous suspended sailing), the enhanced value future cruise credit will not be applicable. Bookings under this circumstance are not eligible for a cash refund and will receive the original value of the FCC back to the guests' profile.

To offer our guests even more flexibility for future holiday planning, some under some circumstances who hold outstanding Future Cruise Credits (FCC) may submit a request to convert their FCC to a monetary refund. The Cruise Norwegian mobile app is not intended for children under the age of 13. However, permission by a parent or guardian in the same stateroom can be granted through their mobile app. To grant permission, a parent must log into the app with their information, open the main menu and navigate to the Preference Centre, select the CHILD ACCESS menu option, and follow the instructions.

When the ship has been cleared, you will proceed through customs and immigration and continue with your independent arrangements. Please ensure that you have arranged for an adequate flight time considering customs and immigration procedures (approx. 2 hours) and the transfer time to the airport. In some ports you can take advantage of our "Easy Walk-Off". This means you can leave the ship as soon as it is cleared by local authorities, carrying all your luggage off the vessel.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

Youth Programmes

Only on port days, depending on the arrival of the ship into port, Port Day Meals are offered and may include a combination of breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. The Port Day Meal fee of $6.00 USD per child/per meal, applies for the supervision of children during the scheduled meal times. Please check the activity programme onboard for the Port Play Mealtime slots. Splash Academy does not offer dinner service if the ship departs the port at 5:00pm or earlier, therefore, if your child was dropped off for afternoon lunch/port play, it is highly requested that you check on your child by 5:30pm as he/she may be hungry.

The Safety Assimilation Drill is a short safety drill and message conducted early in the sailing to allow for youth and staff in Splash Academy to be aware of the established processes in the unlikely event of an emergency. The youth do not leave the facility.

Yes, unless you are issued a handy phone or pager, which requires at least 1 authorised pick up person to remain onboard in case the staff or child needs your assistance. The Youth Programme Manager will enquire with the security team.

This policy is in place for the safety of your child. Pagers and handy phones do not work ashore from the ship.

Handy phones or pagers will be given out for the following reasons:

  • -If your child is in nappies
  • -If your child or staff needs your assistance beyond the scope of the youth programmes care provided

Youth Programme Manager reserves the right to issue a handy phone or pager to parents if the situation with the child requires parent/pick-up person assistance.

If a handy phone or pager is issued to you and your child is signed into the programme, not responding to a page or call within 15 minutes will result in a $75.00 fee and your child will be dismissed from the programme.

If a handy phone or pager is issued a fee of $150.00 will be applied to your onboard account if the device is not returned or if it is returned broken.

Most drop offs will take place in the Splash Academy; however due to high counts the 10 - 12 year old programme may be in a different location. This is not meant to cause inconvenience as it allows us to take in more children.

It is recommended that you check the Dolphins Programme for all drop off locations.

Yes. Teens are always expected to be courteous and respectful. When entering Entourage, Teens should have their key card and wristband available/visible. Teens are also responsible for any personal items brought to activities and events. Teens participating in our programmes are prohibited from smoking, drinking alcohol and using profanity. Violence and vandalism will not be tolerated.l.

It is highly encouraged that teens/parents discuss when they plan to attend Entourage. In addition, Parents should establish a plan to know where the teen will be when not in Entourage.

There is a 1:00 a.m. curfew for all teenage guests. Teens must proceed to their staterooms unless they are accompanied by their parent/guardian. All crew members are instructed to report inappropriate behavior to Ship Security.

For safety reasons, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings strongly discourages teens from travelling ashore alone in the ports of call.

Great family fun is offered throughout the cruise. Activities are subject to change per ship/itinerary but may include shipboard challenges, a circus show, movie night, sports competitions, scavenger hunts, dance parties, game show challenges and poolside challenges.

Please remember that a parent or guardian is required to be present throughout the duration of the activity in order for the child to participate in designated Family Activities.

Yes. 24-hour Internet service and arcade games are available on the ship and are accessible with your stateroom key card. Fees are charged directly to your onboard account. Parents, if you do not wish for your child to have access, please visit the reception desk and deactivate your child's card.

Youth Programmes and Youth Programme facilities adhere to fire code safety and maximum occupancy* guidelines outlined per vessel based on Fire Safety Standard Code. In the event the facilities reach maximum occupancy, there could be delayed wait times for drop off.

*Maximum Fire Code Capacity refers to the maximum number of children and staff allowed inside the Youth Facilities at any time to provide safety and prevent overcrowding. Splash Academy and Entourage staff are required to enforce the set limits and reserve the right to temporarily suspend drop off service to registered guests once the maximum capacity has been reached. Access to facilities will be granted once children/teens are signed -out or picked up and space becomes available. The service is available on a first come first served basis.

Parents or guardians must alert the Youth Staff of any allergies, required medications or special needs of their child/teen when registering. If a child has a severe allergy and uses an epipen, the epipen must come with the child.

The Youth Programme Manager has the right to issue a handy phone based if the need is determined.

Youth Staff are not allowed to administer any medication to any child.

If a child/teen of any age is not feeling well, he/she should visit the medical centre. Before returning to the programme, he/she must be cleared by the doctor. Please refer to Childhood Exclusion Policy that is posted outside all Youth Programme facilities. A standard medical centre charge may apply.

  • Step 1: Verbal Warning - Teens exhibiting inappropriate behavior will be asked to stop immediately.
  • Step 2: Parent Notification - If the inappropriate behavior does not stop, parents will be notified and informed that if the behavior doesn't change, the teen will be dismissed for 24 hours or dismissal from the programme may occur, depending on the severity of the inappropriate action.
  • Step 3: 24-Hour Dismissal with Parent/Ship Notification - If the inappropriate behavior does not stop, he/she will be dismissed from the Entourage and Teen Programme for 24 hours. Parents and Ship Security will be notified

IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL: : Any teenager passenger exhibiting violence, vandalism, vaping, or intoxication when participating in the Teen Programme or using Entourage, will result in immediate dismissal for the entire sailing. Parents and Ship Security will be notified.

In an unlikely event of an emergency, if teens are in Entourage, the Teen Counsellor will direct the teens to their Assembly Stations; however, teens are personally responsible for proceeding to their Assembly Stations. Parents should ensure that their teen(s) are familiar with their Assembly Station location number or letter. This information can be found on the guest key card and on the back of the stateroom door.

For overall safety, parents are responsible for their children at all times, even when not present.

  • Step 1: Verbal Warning - The Youth Counsellor addresses the child and it is explained that his/her behavior is unacceptable and needs to be improved immediately.
  • Step 2:Reflection Time - If the child continues to disobey the Youth Counsellor, a time out is issued and the parents are notified at pick-up time.
  • Step 3: Suspension - If a time out is not effective in eliminating the inappropriate behavior, the parents are located and the child is dismissed from the programme for 24 hours. The child is then welcomed back after the time frame noted.
  • Step 4: Dismissal - Once the child is allowed back into the programme after the initial dismissal, if any disobedient behavior continues, the child will no longer be allowed to participate. More severe behaviours may warrant a higher discipline as deemed appropriate by the Youth Programme Supervisor.

Entourage combines the hang out zone, dance zone, game zone and party zone. The Teen Counsellors plan intriguing activities and challenges to keep the teens coming back for more. Activities and games may take place around the ship. Parents should know that the activities are hosted by the Teen Counsellors. However, when activities take place around the ship, Entourage may be unsupervised.

For overall safety, children should pack and be expected to wear to closed toe sneakers when participating in activities at the Sports Court. In addition, children can decide to pack items that match with the common themes; but please know that items will also be created and made onboard for each theme for the children. We focus on creativity, self-expression, and engagement.

Parents should be aware that Norwegian Cruise Line Youth Counsellors in Splash Academy on any ship are not able to assist children in the washrooms. This includes pulling up/down pants, buttoning/unbuttoning pants and/or wiping assistance. A pager or handy phone will be issued to alert you when your child needs assistance. Any parent or at least one authorised pick up person of a child needing assistance in the washroom and using the drop off service, on sea days or ports must be reachable and remain on board as papers and handy phones do not work ashore. A $75.00 USD fee will charged to the parent's onboard account and the child will be dismissed from programme if the authorised pick up people leave the ship and/or cannot be reached.

Splash Academy will accept children in diapers who are eligible to participate in the complimentary, drop-off program. However, Youth Counselors in Splash Academy on any ship are not able to change diapers or pull-ups. The parent, primary guardian or authorized pick up person is responsible to assist their child and will be given a pager or handy phone to alert them when their child needs assistance. The page must be responded to within 15 minutes. In the event there is an immediate health and sanitary concern to the child, facility, or other children, the child will be assisted into clean clothes until the parents arrive or can be reached.

For either service, Guppies Drop Off Nursery or Splash Academy, Any parent or at least one authorized pick up person of a child in diapers using the drop off service, on sea days or while the ship is in port, must be reachable and remain on board as pagers and handy phones do not work ashore from the ship.

A $75.00 USD fee will apply and the child will be dismissed from the program if the following occur:

1. A parent does not respond to a page within 15 minutes.

2. A parent or authorized pick up person does not remain onboard during port day services.

Identification bracelets are issued to children ages 3 - 12 when registered for the youth programmes and worn for the entire cruise. The bracelet is colour coordinated for each age group, displays the child's safety muster station and any allergies. Medical conditions are coded privately for internal use. Norwegian Escape offers a fee-based Guppies Nursery for children 6 months - under 3 years old.

On port days, children ages 3 - 12 are combined for programming from arrival into port until departure from port or 6:00 pm, whichever comes first. Please know that children under 12 are supervised when in Splash Academy.

Note to parents:

If parents go ashore, it is recommended to use the Splash Academy services for children under 12 year old. Parents should never leave their child(ren) unattended on the ship during a port day with no guardianship. Parents found to have left their minor (under 17) onboard with no guardian is subject to fines, ship dismissal, and a legal investigation.

Parents or Primary Guardian(s) (if children are not travelling with their parents) may select a total of four (4) people (including themselves) to drop off/pick up their child(ren) from Splash Academy (Fleetwide).

The authorised drop off and pick-up people are the same people and must be listed on the child's profile at the time of registration and must be 18 years of age or older..

Splash Academy, and Entourage are adult free zones (18+) regardless of what programme is taking place.

Parents/guardians/adults are only allowed in Splash Academy and Entourage facilities on embarkation day during the registration process.

If a 12 year old is registered for Splash Academy, it is understood that 12 year olds need special attention and programmes; therefore the Dolphins Youth Counsellors offer more mature games/theme nights and timetable Entourage Take-Overs allowing the Dolphins to enjoy the lounge, video games, air hockey, foosball, music videos and much more.

NCLH has a strict no age bumping policy, unless the children have a birthday during the cruise. The birthday policies for each age group are as follows with no exceptions:

  • - Children turning three (3) years old during the cruise are welcome to register and participate on their birthday.
  • - Children turning five (5) years old during the cruise are welcome to register for and participate in the 5-9 year old age group beginning embarkation evening.
  • - Children turning ten (10) years old during the cruise are welcome to register for and participate in the 10-12 year old age group beginning embarkation evening. Sign in and out privileges* only apply after the child turns 10 years old.
  • - Children turning thirteen (13) years old during the cruise are welcome to register for and participate in the Entourage Programme beginning embarkation evening.
  • - Children turning eighteen (18) years old during the cruise are legal adults and will not be able to continue participation in Entourage as of their birthday.

Flexible Programming allows for the children to choose their interest-based activity. There will many options for them to explore from Dynamic, Creative, Gaming, and Chill. They can choose one or they can choose all of them. The activities will vary per session.

Yes, although children are registered for and placed in the appropriate age group based on their date of birth at the time of sailing for quality programmes. For quality programmes, certain hours within the programme, called Feel Free Play, are designated for friends and siblings to play together. When Feel Free Play is not in session, children are placed in their appropriate age groups for programming. No exceptions will be made to age bump to a different age group.

Children of different ages can also play together during Port Play and Late Night Fun Zone. For safety concerns 3-5 year olds may be separated yet efforts will be made to keep siblings together.

It is not advised for a child to bring in electronics or personal items to Splash Academy. In the event the child does bring in an item, the child is fully responsible for the item if lost or damaged. In addition, whilst in programme, the device should be used on a limited basis as to not distract other children from the programme. We also reserve the right to remove the item in attempt to control shared content that may be inappropriate for all ages.

Overall, there are very few fees associated with the Youth Programmes.

  • Splash Academy Bracelet Reprint Fee: $5.00 USD
  • Splash Academy Late Pick Up Fee: $1.00 per minute.
  • Pager/Handy Phone Fee: $150.00 USD for damage and replacement.
  • Splash Academy and Guppies Nursery Diaper Changing Fee: $75.00 USD and program dismissal
  • Splash Academy Late Pick-Up Fee: $1.00 USD per minute, starting at the 16th minute and the child can be dismissed from program for excessive late pick-ups.
  • Guppies Nursery Missed Time Block Fee: $20.00 per child/$16.00 per sibling.
  • Guppies Nursery Cancellation Fee: No charge if cancellation takes place 12 or more hours prior.
  • Guppies Nursery Late Pick-Up Fee: $1.00 USD per minute
  • Early Morning Club: $6.00 USD per child/per hour, $4.00 USD per sibling/per hour.
  • Breakfast Club: $6.00 USD per child for the supervision during the meal.
  • Entourage Wristband Lost and/or Cut Replacement Fee: $20.00.

Parents can allow their 10 - 12 year old to sign themselves out of Splash Academy after two hours of participation.

The authorisation ends nightly at 10:30 p.m. Therefore, at 10:30 p.m., the 10 -12 year old will be signed out from Splash Academy, unless the parent registers the child for Late Night Fun Zone.

If the child does not wish to remain in Splash Academy for the two hours, the parent or another authorised pick up person or another authorised guardian can pick up the child at any time.

The sign out authorisation does not apply on Port Days.

It is recommended that parents decline the authorisation if they do not want their 10 - 12 year old unattended or if the child has a moderate to severe special need. It is also recommended for safety purposes, to establish a meet-up plan for 10-12 year olds who are given the sign out authorisation so you are aware of where they are when not in the programme.

Opening hours on Sea Days and Port Days whilst the ship is sailing are posted onboard the ship or via the Freestyle Daily.

Norwegian Fleet Embarkation Day 8:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Port Days Refer to Activity Booklet* - 10:30 p.m.

Sea Days 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m./2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m./7:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

Late Night Fun Zone 10:30 p.m. - 1:30 a.m. nightly, (Fee applies)

The center closes at 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Children must be picked up at these times. Pick-up late fees may apply.

Splash Academy and Entourage are complimentary programs, but there is a port day Meal Fee of $6.00 USD per child/per meal, which applies for the supervision of children during meal times. Depending on the arrival of the ship into port, Port Day Meals may include a combination of breakfast, lunch and/or dinner. Please check the activity program on board for the Port Play Meal(s) time slots.

Splash Academy and Entourage are complimentary and optional programmes.

Late Night Fun Zone is a group-sitting, drop off, fee-based service for children ages 3 - 12 years old. Late Night Fun Zone is run by the Youth Staff inside Splash Academy. Late Night programming continues the theme throughout the day.

Parents are encouraged to register in advance. The Late Night fee is charged to your onboard account. Sign out authorisation for 10 - 12 year olds does not apply during Late Night Fun Zone. If there are no children registered or dropped off by 11:30 p.m., the youth centre will close for the evening.

On all ships, for Splash Academy and Entourage, a one-time registration is to be completed by a parent or guardian (if child is not travelling with their parent) for each child/teen age 5 - 17. Children/teens can then participate as frequently as they choose. Norwegian requests that you let the Youth Staff know if your child has allergies, is taking any medications, or has any special needs by noting this on the Registration Form.

Onboard Norwegian Escape, any parent wanting to use the Guppies Nursery is required to complete a one-time registration for children ages 6 months - under 3 years old along with securing a reservation for the desired time block session(s). Be sure to register your child and make reservations for the desired time block(s), once onboard, with the Nursery Attendant.

Guppies Nursery is permanently closed on Norwegian Escape.

ENTOURAGE Entourage: 13* - 17 years old

*Age eligibility is based on the age of the child at the time of sailing, according to their birth certificate or passport reflected on the ships manifest.

  • - A child who turns 18 during the cruise is considered a legal adult and will not be able to continue participation in Entourage.

Youth Programmes represents are family and youth programmes for families and children 3 to 17 years old:

Family Activities: The Cruise and Youth teams offer an array of engaging family activities that brings everyone closer together. Bring your competition and A-Game for Beat Your Bed Time, Music Mania, Compete Opposites, and Family Dodgeball. Who will rule? The parents or the children?

Guppies Open Play: Youth Programmes represents are family and youth programmes for families and children 3 to 17 years old:

Splash Academy: A drop off service for children ages 3-12, fully potty trained (without nappies/pull ups), offering flexible programming, allowing children to explore and make their own interest-based choices throughout the sailing.

Entourage is the teen hang out for 13 -17 year olds. Refer to Entourage FAQ What does Entourage have to offer teens 13 -17 years old?

For Splash Academy, and Entourage, it is recommended that parents register their child(ren) and teen(s) as soon as they board the ship. Any Youth Counsellor on board the ship is available to assist.

As you’re planning your cruise packing, you may be wondering what hair styling items you should bring. Cruise travel often involves lots of extra time in the pool or ocean or engaging in other activities that may require some extra hair washing. Before tossing your bulky blow dryer into the suitcase, let’s figure out do cruise ships have hair dryers?

Unless you are sailing on a really old ship, the odds are high that you will have a hair dryer provided. Most cruise ships have hair dryers in the cabins, either in the bathroom, mounted to the wall, or in the vanity’s drawer.

Some older cruise ships, however, might not have hair dryers in the cabins. In this case, you can ask for one from the cabin crew, and they will be able to provide you with one.

So, that means there’s one less thing to pack when going on a cruise, or is there? Depending on your hair care practices, other questions remain: The hair dryers provided on cruise ships might not suit your hair styling needs. Are you allowed to take your own preferred hair dryer? Can you bring other styling tools, such as straighteners and curling tongs? How does the voltage work on a cruise ship? Keep reading to learn those details and more. 

Do Cruise Ships Have Hair Dryers In Cabins?

Fortunately, most cruise ship cabins come equipped with a hair dryer. Except for some of the oldest cabins, you can find a hair dryer in the bathroom or in the main room’s vanity. If there are no hair dryers to be found in your cabin, you can also request one from a steward.

Therefore, if you don’t have any specific hair styling requirements, you can make do with the hair dryer provided by the cruise line. However, these hair dryers may not be the best quality, or they may be missing features that you rely on. The hair dryers provided by cruise lines are similar to ones you find in hotel rooms. The complementary hair dryers usually have a very short power cord and are not very powerful.

So, if you have long, thick hair or prefer your own hair dryer, you’ll want to make some room in your bag and bring your own. (You may also want to know whether your cruise ship provides shampoo and other key toiletries.)

You might wonder if there are any restrictions on the hair dryer you’re allowed to take.

Although cruise ships have stringent rules regarding what you can and cannot take with you onto the ship ( no travel irons! ) to help avoid various potential cruise ship mishaps . Nevertheless, they do allow hair styling tools, including hair dryers. This is excellent news because it allows you to bring your own hair dryer if you have any concerns that the ones provided on the ship are insufficient. 

Although you can bring any hair dryer, most experience travelers will advise you to focus on a travel-size hair dryer. These hairdryers are not only lightweight and take up little space, but they also often have features that make them easier to use when traveling to foreign countries.

However, if you’re not planning on traveling too often, buying a travel-size hair dryer for one cruise might be a little excessive. Therefore, you are welcome to take your normal hair dryer on the cruise.

What Other Hair Styling Tools Can You Take On A Cruise?

Cruise ships are extremely strict about what tools you can take on the ship and what tools you aren’t allowed to take. For example, clothes irons and steaming irons are entirely off-limits and will be confiscated if you attempt to take these on board with you. 

These strict rules have to do with the safety of passengers and crew on board. A cruise ship has thousands of passengers and crew members on board simultaneously. If every passenger plugs a power-intensive tool, such as an iron, into the socket at once, the ship’s power supply would be overloaded, leading to a disaster.

Fortunately, cruise ships allow hair styling tools, such as hair straighteners, hair curling tongs, and heated curlers. Therefore, you can bring these tools along on the ship if you wish to. Again, if you are planning to travel often, investing in travel-sized hair styling tools is advisable.

Although most cruise ships, such as Carnival, Princess, and Norwegian cruise lines, allow you to take hair styling tools onboard, it is always best to inquire about this before boarding. If the cruise ship does not allow the use of hair styling tools, they will likely confiscate them and give them back at the end of your trip.

Another problem many guests have when they go on a cruise is insufficient or inconveniently placed power outlets. This problem will only be intensified when you bring several hair styling tools. In addition, you might be concerned about the voltage of the socket and the compatibility with the tools you’re using. So, let’s look at how you can address those issues? 

Are Power Adapters Required For Hair Dryers On Cruise Ships?

Most cruise ships will have power sockets compatible with American and European plugs. However, if you require more plugs than are provided in your cabin, you can bring additional plugs. Otherwise, you will not need a power adapter for a hair dryer, as the power outlet on a cruise ship is the same as in a house (120V).

As for the number of outlets you will need, we consider travel power strips and/or outlet expanders to be a must-have cruise accessory . You will be much happier if you pack one in your luggage. Note that you should only take a power strip that does not have surge protection because of cruise ship restrictions . So, whether you have a short bob or long locks, there’s no need to worry about packing your hair dryer on your next cruise. NCL is one of the popular cruise lines among the cruising aficionados. The freestyle cruising experience is what sets Norwegian Cruise Line apart from others. 

The NCL includes all amenities, including toiletries, but before packing for your voyage , you should know what toiletries NCL does. This will help you to pack only a few toiletries to avoid burden. 

I have been traveling for a decade, and NCL is always my favorite Cruise line because of its freestyle traveling fun. 

Today, I will be your guide and inform you about the essential toiletries on Norwegian Cruise Lines. So let’s get into it.

What Toiletries Does NCL Provide?

The Norwegian Cruise Lines offer inclusive voyages; you will get all the daily use amenities. When it comes to toiletries, you will get a few essential items like soap, shampoo, and conditioner. 

But still, some toiletries are missing onboard, and you have to bring your own. 

Soap is a must-have toiletry; luckily, all the suits, cabins, and staterooms have soap. So you don’t need to pack an additional one in your bag. 

But still, if you have sensitive skin, you can pack your own. Few soaps might be harsh on the skin, so if you’re hooked on a specific soap, you can bring that one. 

In case the soap runs out, ask the crew staff to bring a new one.

2- Shampoos & Conditioners 

Whether in a suit or stateroom, you will be provided with Shampoos and conditioners. So you don’t need to pack them. Most of the time, I have seen that they use l’occitane shampoo and conditioners , but it can vary from cruise to cruise. 

You will find the shampoo/conditioner dispenser in the shower area and body soap in the sink. Sometimes, people also complain about the quality of shampoos. 

The sea air, salt water, and hard water will make your hair rough and fry. If you have thick hair, pack your shampoo and conditioners.

Every stateroom and cabin in NCL has a brand-new towel. The towels occupy a lot of space in your luggage, so don’t pack them. Similarly, you will also get a beach towel on the pool deck. 

On embarkation day , the new towels are always on the bed when you step into the stateroom. There is also a separate tower station near the pool where you can exchange, but it usually remains busy. 

Also, before going for water-based excursions, you must bring a towel from the ship. Onboard, you can exchange the free towels for the plush one for $25. 

4- Hair dryer 

You don’t need to pack a hair dryer; it’s available in every stateroom. Sadly, the hair dryers in a stateroom don’t have nozzles on them, so fashion-conscious folks will find it difficult to manage. But for me, the hair dryer works best without a nozzle. 

You should pack a curling iron and straightener because they are not available in staterooms. Also, consider bringing the preferable adapter with these mini electronics.

5- Cloth Hangers

Clothes hangers are included in each room. There are also some towels and cloth bars mounted in bathrooms. You don’t need extra hangers in your bag, but you might consider 3 or 4 extra hangers if you have too many clothes. 

Other Toiletries That You Should Bring With Yourself

I’m a DIY person; I always bring a shoe rack to hang all necessary toiletries behind the cruise cabin. 

While NCL offers some basic toiletries, you still have to pack a few essential ones; here are a few additional toiletries I often pack in my bag. 

  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste. 
  • Deodorant – Recommended
  • Shaving supplies – Recommended
  • Skincare items
  • Medications
  • Sunscreen – Recommended
  • Lip balm – Recommended
  • Nail Clipper – Recommended
  • Aloe – Recommended
  • Makeup – Recommended
  • Hand Creme and body lotion, etc

Everything can be stored in the shoe holder and easily hung behind the door. 

Can You Bring Irons On Norwegian Cruise Line?

Ironing is a must! Whether you have packed the entire wardrobe or 2-3 pairs of clothes, you must do ironing to make them wrinkle-free. Does NCL offer the laundry service , or do you have to bring your own iron? 

It is good to know that the NCL offers laundry service; you can pre-purchase it and pay for it after onboarding. There is no self-laundry service onboard; you have to send your clothes to avail of the laundry service, and the price varies per item. 

Heads Up! You’re not permitted to bring your iron onboard. However, I still prefer you get the wrinkle-removing spray; it can be handy when no iron is near you. 

A quick hack! You can try a hair straightener to iron your clothes and make them wrinkle-free. Just splash a few drops of water on your clothes, turn on the hair straightener to a medium setting, and start removing the wrinkles. 

Packing Tips For Toiletries

Packing can be quite time-consuming for all cruisers, especially since we tend to forget our essential toiletries when we’re in a rush.

The toiletries might vary from person to person; if you’re a fashionista, packing toiletries might be an uphill task for you. 

Thankfully, the packing cubes save a lot of time. I usually get 6 to 8 packing cubes to keep everything organized, making it a breeze to locate items in your suitcase later.

First Step:

First, grab a pen and paper and list all your essential toiletries. This will save you time and will get you out of trouble. 

Second Step: 

Put all your toiletries in one packing cube. If you recall additional items to pack while preparing, jot them down on paper so you can include them later.

Third Step: 

I often pack my toiletries first, and you should also do so. Once all small items get packed, packing clothes and other stuff becomes easy. 

Once the toiletries bag geiseady, put it into your luggage, and you’re ready. You can also opt for a foldable shoe rack to manage all tolerate later in your cabin. But it’s up to you what you like the most. 

Quality Of Toiletries On NCL

For me, there is no complaining at all regarding NCL toiletries. Most products are lemongrass scents, and I love them. The hand wash is thick and instantly cleans your hands. 

Regarding shampoo and conditioners, they are also safe from complaints. NCL ensures its products are formulated with high-quality ingredients to deliver outstanding results. 

I have noticed that NCL uses l’occitane shampoo and conditioner, but still, few folks dislike the conditioner. If you have thick hair or you’re too conscious about your hair, I suggest you bring your own. 

Though towels are not so thick, you can easily pack them for water excursions or beaches. The Beach towers are blue and white, stripped, and so soft. 

Overall, I will never complain about the quality of toiletries at NCL; they offer the best value on a low budget.

Power, Outlets and Hair Dryers on NCL Spirit

I have found other threads about the outlets and hair dryer use, but I still have a few questions.

1. I understand that the 110v outlet won't handle more than 500 watts. My hair dryer is 1875 watts. My issue is that my hair is REALLY thick and the typical cruise/hotel dryers don't work worth a flip. So is there anyway to use this outlet for MY personal dryer without blowing a fuse?

2. If I buy the dual wattage dryer that many have recommended from Wal-mart, what is it's highest wattage?

Basically I'm trying to see if there's anyway to have a hair dryer on board that is more than 1000 watts.

Any input is greatly appreciated!!!

TallSuse, Walmart carries the Revlon Int'l hairdryer (I believe it is 1875 watts), which has the adapter to convert from flat prongs to round prongs, which is what you will need for the foreign 220V outlet at the vanity. I bought it specifically for the Spirt and I have big hair too. It works great!

Do not use the 110v outlet for anything major; just for charging a cell phone, electric razer, etc.

There is no wattage limitation on the 220 circuit, so it doesn't matter. Only the 110 circuit has a wattage limitation. Think the 220 circuit as a four lane highway instead of a two lane highway. But to use this circuit you need either a European hair dryer or a dual voltage hair dryer. Just be sure you set the dual voltage hair dryer to 220, because that is the circuit you wish to use. Well for the hair dryer. Everything else you have will be okay to use the American 110 outlet, no worries. Its the high wattage hair dryer we wish to address, its best to use the 220 circuit.

FOR sure on this ship you MUST bring your own hair dryer. I have used other ship dryers with no problem but the Spirit have terrible ones! The look and act like vacum cleaners!!!

Electrical Outlet Issues:

- Every cabin on the Spirit has both one 220 Volt European and one 110 Volt American receptacles (and one American 110 volt in the bathroom for shavers). Since the Spirit was ordered and built for Star Cruises, with no intention to ever sail from North America, the wiring pulled to every cabin is of a smaller gauge, sufficient for 220 Volts but not for 110 Volts. There is a 500 Watt limitation on the 110 Volts receptacles.

- The cabins do have hairdryers. However, they are not very strong.

Because of the voltage issue, this means that you cannot use your own hairdryer in the 110 outlet. You WILL blow the circuit for an entire block of cabins. You have to use the 220 outlet. This means you will need a converter and an adaptor. The converter converts from 220 volts to 110 volts, and the adaptor allows you to use the 220 outlet.

The problem is a good converter costs much more than the dual voltage hair dryer and adapter.

You can avoid having to buy a converter if you just have a dual voltage appliance (converter is built in). You will still need the adaptor. To make it even easier, the Revlon International Travel Dryer,1875 watts comes with 2 international plug adaptors. You can get these at Wal Mart for about $18.00. Then, you will not need to buy anything else to use your own hairdryer!

- Since the cabin only has one 110 volt plug, you will probably want to bring a surge protector/power strip. This will allow you to plug in multiple items at one time (but not hairdryer).

Power strips do not solve any wattage problem. Power strips only let you plug mutiple things into it. It still plugs in the ships power system. Simple logic folks.

The Spirit "supposedly" as some wattage limits and you could blow a fuse for your section of the cabins when you try to suck too much power. Plugging into a power strip which is really just an extension cord is not gonna help.

If you’re going on a cruise, you might be wondering if cruise ships have hairdryers or if you’ll need to bring your own. Since cruise ships do have rules about what you can and cannot bring on a cruise , this is an important question.

I have a particular interest in this topic, since I like to brow dry and style my hair for the evenings on a cruise.

In this blog post, I share the information you need to know about hairdryers on cruise ships. As well, we’ll look at the rules for bringing your own hair dryer and hot styling tools on your cruise.

Are There Hairdryers on Cruise Ships?

Almost all cruise ships provide small hair dryers as part of your stateroom amenities. Older ships may not have blow dryers in all cabins, so you may need to request one from your cabin steward , but this is rare. The hairdryer will be in the vanity area or desk drawer in your cruise cabin , or wall mounted near a mirror.

In terms of quality, the hairdryers are similar to those found in standard hotel rooms. Expect a short spiral cord, low to medium heat, and the possibility that you may need to hold down a button for it to work.

If you just need a quick blow dry or have shorter or straighter hair, these will work just fine. However, if you have long or thick hair, and need a better quality blow dryer with stronger heat to style your hair, consider bringing your own.

Can You Bring a Hair Dryer on a Cruise Ship?

You can definitely bring your own hairdryer on your cruise ship. Even though cruise lines have restrictions on items like irons and clothes steamers , a hair dryer is just fine.

For years, I brought my Elchin blowdryer that I use at home, however it’s a heavy one and I always worried it would break while traveling. I now bring this small travel hairdryer that my hairdresser recommended a few years ago. It’s such a good quality for the price!

Many online reviews describe this small hairdryer as the smallest, lightest and most powerful travel blowdryer they’ve ever found & I absolutely agree!

Can You Bring Curling Irons and Hair Straighteners on a Cruise?

Many people wonder if hot hair styling tools are allowed on a cruise. Thankfully for us ladies, the answer is yes.

You can add your curling wands or irons, hair straighteners and hot rollers to your cruise packing list.

It’s a good idea to bring a non-surge protected “cruise approved” power bar , as cruise cabins are notorious for having no more than 1 or 2 electric outlets. I bring one with extra electric outlets and USBs , so I can also charge my phone and other electronics.

Please note that regular surge protected power strips are not allowed on a cruise ship and will be confiscated . It’s important that the power bar is “non-surge” protected. Many cruise lines prohibit extension cords as well, so this power bar is a good choice.

Things Not to Bring on a Cruise

While you can bring hairdryers, hair straighteners and curling irons on a cruise, there are a few things to leave at home .

Clothing irons and clothes steamers are not permitted as they’re considered to be a fire hazard – a huge danger on a cruise!

The easy answer to this question is yes, you’ll almost always have a hair dryer in your cruise cabin. However, since it’s a standard hotel quality at best, if you need a more powerful and hot blowdryer, you’ll probably want to bring your own.

Dyson Airwrap or Shark Flexstyle on Getaway?

Has anyone been able to use either one of these on Getaway? My daughter has been using her Shark (US) as she had a lot of damage done with regular curling irons and flat irons. Her hair has been growing back and healthy now because of her use of the Flexstyle on low heat mode.

This would be the wife's cup of tea, but she's not here. As for what she's told me, no hairdryers, no curling irons, but certain straightener's are allowed.  I'm going to guess whatever she brings is going to be looked at carefully (a time delay) and will be allowed or disallowed based on who's looking at it.

You can always call NCL -- good luck with that.

This subject came up a couple of months ago on a CC thread.  Someone managed to find another section of the NCL website that listed the exceptions.  I wasn't able to find it just now, but I do remember someone quoted it on CC.

It has always been NCL's policy that hair care appliances, whether dryers, curlers, or straighteners are allowed.  As for the OP's question, I don't know anything about the Shark product, but the Dyson products are hit and miss,  so if the Shark is a similar electronic device (in the case of a straightener, if it is a ceramic unit), it may or may not work.  This is not ship specific, it has to do with the ship's wiring, and whether or not there is a ground fault anywhere on the ship at the time.  Ground faults on ships, while not dangerous to life, can affect the electronic devices like Dyson dryers that are designed for land situations.  I won't go into the more intricate details of why, unless requested, but anecdotally I have heard about the Dyson products, and ceramic straighteners of all kinds, working sometimes and sometimes not.

I have taken my curling iron on board every ship I have been on. No one has inspected it or said a word to me. I unplug it after every use and even if I didn't, it has an automatic shut off feature after about 30 minutes.

You can bring a hair dryer or curling iron or hair straightener. I suggest bringing a surge protector. Usually my own hair dryer pops the circuit and I just give in and use theirs but if you put it in a surge protector it may work. Just weaker than at home.

This is not correct based on our experience, but it's NCL. Whatever works, works. If it doesn't, you'll know.

Surge protectors are banned on cruises because they're a fire risk. I certainly wouldn't bring one.

A surge protector only is designed to kill circuits with one hot wire in normal wiring, but on a ship both sides are hot, including the normal neutral wire. This can cause them to malfunction and overload / start fires.

You can bring a power strip without surge protection though. I got this one. It's compact for travel, and has USB-C ports.

And although not allowed on NCL cruise ships, surge protectors do not reduce power.

surge protectors are usually on the prohibited list.

Even a brand new surge protector can fail and start a fire, due to something elsewhere on the ship, and entirely out of your control.  They are a fire hazard on ships, and are not needed either.

While this was the general uptake from the USCG Safety Notice regarding surge protectors, they conflated two problems into one, and didn't elaborate sufficiently.  A surge protector does not "kill" any circuit, it merely dumps voltage to ground, and then restores the power to the circuit when the voltage is normal again, and this function it can do on a ship as well.  The problem with surge protectors on ships is that the semiconductors used to perform this surge protection are only designed to see high voltage in  one direction , i.e. when the hot, or neutral, legs are higher than the ground leg.  However, due to the floating ground on ships, a ground on a 480v circuit could produce a situation where the voltage on the ground leg is higher than the hot or neutral leg, and this causes the semiconductors to fail and go into "thermal runaway", and start a fire.

The comment about only breaking one leg of the circuit is applicable to  US consumer power strips , not surge protectors, as the little "on/off" switch/circuit breaker only opens the hot lead, and if the appliance has a ground fault, then the current could continue to flow from neutral to ground.

I took my Dyson hair dryer on the Escape in January and twice I blew out he power in the room!  I’m going to purchase a dryer with an automatic converter for my Joy cruise in August.

Yes, I have cruised many times. Sapphire on NCL. I looked at the prohibited list and while it doesn't say these items specifically, including a surge protector, I agree that these items are not suitable and will no longer bring them when I cruise and take back my recommendation above.

This forum is by no means alone in that regard. There seems to be two prevalent themes of such posts. The first is, you haven't cruised as much as me, or cruised enough, so you can't possibly know something I don't. The second is, if there's something you don't know, you must have never cruised before, or haven't cruised enough. There are variations on those principles, but that's the general gist. But again, that type of attitude is by no means limited to this forum. It's one of the many joys of internet forums that we have to learn to live with.

And I should also mention, many times those posts are not intended to come across the way they do.

10 Things You Should Not Pack for a Cruise

Maybe you’ve asked friends or researched and you already know what you plan to pack for a cruise. But do you also know what things not to pack for a cruise ?

Here are my suggestions for what you should definitely not pack for a cruise. In other words, leave these things at home so they’re not confiscated, lost or stolen. Or simply not needed.

This is what not to pack for a cruise. Do not bring your cat on a cruise! Just kidding.

What You Should Not to Pack for a Cruise

With safety at sea the number one priority, maritime rules and regulations are constantly updated. It’s not easy to know what you can and cannot bring onboard. Plus, aside from a safety standpoint, some items are best left at home.

1. Leave the Spirits at Home

Unless you want your booze confiscated at embarkation and held hostage or worse, discarded, do not bring the hard stuff on a cruise. Most mass-market and premium cruise lines rely on alcohol revenue for a large chunk of income.

It makes sense that BYOB isn’t widely accepted. Among the cruise lines that don’t allow you to bring spirits onboard at embarkation are Carnival, Celebrity, Holland America, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean.

One or two bottles of wine are permitted at embarkation on most ships but check the details with your cruise line.

2. Power Strips with Surge Protection

There was a time not too long ago that many of us advocated to pack a power strip that always had a built-in surge protector. With so many devices to charge, especially with two or more people in a stateroom, that was the only solution.

Since those days, power strips with surge protection are forbidden. Most cruise lines clearly state that if your stateroom attendant sees one of those in use in your room while you are away, the item could be confiscated til the end of the cruise. 

Again, this goes back to safety at sea. Fire is the number one disaster. New ships now have multiple electric sockets and USB ports. This eliminates your need to pack a multiple outlet power strip that has surge protection. 

But, rather than hope that your older ship’s stateroom has plenty of USB outlets and enough regular outlets, you may want to purchase something like one of these power strips. They have no surge protection and are allowed by the cruise lines. This is the one that I use onboard.

3. Decide on a Hair-Dryer. Or Not.

If you sport a wash-and-wear haircut, you’re in luck. All ships furnish some sort of electric hair-dryer in the stateroom. In addition, your stateroom’s hair dryer could an out-dated, wall-mounted or worse, a drawer-mounted dryer with a very short connecting cord.

Worse, the odd-shaped nozzle usually blows either burning hot or lukewarm air. Other ships’ hair-dryers may look like the one you have at home but the on/off button does not lock into place. You have to continually press one finger on the switch which makes styling and drying somewhat of a challenge.

If none of this matters to you, great! One less item to pack. But if you are concerned with styling your hair, bring your blow-dryer from home.

Travel-size blow-dryer recommended. This is the one I pack for cruises on older ships. Because it folds up, it doesn’t take up much space in my suitcase. Being really light-weight, helps to make self-assisted early walk-off easier, too.

4. Don’t Pack a Flat Iron or Curling Iron

Keep in mind that this is a decision that can vary from cruise line to cruise line and ship to ship. Sure, you can bring your heated hair appliance if you want or need it. Just keep in mind that some cruise lines or specific ships have recently added these to the list of forbidden items that could be confiscated if found.

5. No Coffee Maker Machines

Even though several cruise lines like Cunard and Norwegian have coffee makers in the staterooms, that doesn’t mean it’s ok to bring your own. I don’t understand the logic, but rules are rules. If your stateroom attendant spots even something like a water boiler in your room, it’ll be taken away until you leave the ship.

6. Irons and Clothes Steamers 

Back in the “old” days of cruising, it was perfectly acceptable to bring a clothes iron or a steamer into your suitcase. Luckily, safety standards have improved and it’s now forbidden to use an iron in your stateroom. It’s easy to forget to unplug or leave a hot iron on a flammable surface.

Fire is something that you do not want to happen at sea. If your clothes are wrinkled from packing, it’s only a few dollars to have the ship’s laundry press your clothes.

Some cruise lines (Cunard, Holland America and Carnival, for example) have self-service laundry facilities complete with washer, dryer, iron and ironing board.

7. Leave Your Good Jewelry at Home

Whether cruising the Caribbean, Mediterranean or anywhere in the world, there’s no reason to risk losing treasured jewelry to a grab and run street crime or simple carelessness on your part.

While every major cruise line provides a safe in each stateroom, it’s best to leave the “good stuff” at home. If you absolutely must bling at the Captain’s Dinner, shop for a few shiny pieces of the faux stuff before you leave home.

8. Don’t Bring Brand New Shoes!

There’s almost nothing worse than sore, blistered feet when you have a lot of walking to do. And in some ports, especially Alaska and in Europe, walking tours or hiking is expected.

Even brand new sneakers need a breaking-in period. Sandals, too. If you absolutely must bring a shiny pair of new shoes on your cruise, be sure to pack an assortment of band-aids. 

Or wear them around your home before the cruise. If you get any scrapes or blisters, you’ll be happy to have band-aids with you.

9. Ditch the Skin-Tight Jeans

Have you heard about the legendary five-pound weight gain? It doesn’t matter if this is your first or fiftieth cruise, chances are you will gain a few shipboard pounds. Luckily most of it will be water weight gain because of the over-use of salt in the ship’s foods.

There’s nothing more disheartening than looking at the clothes you’ve packed, which fit perfectly a week before the cruise, suddenly leave you gasping for air. Allow for a little “wiggle” room and leave your tightest jeans at home.

They may look great for a night on the town back home, but by day four or five of your cruise, you may wish that you had brought the ones with a scoosh more room. 

10. Leave the Excess at Home If Choosing Early Walk-Off

All cruise lines offer “early walk-off.” This is perfect for guests who live near the port, have to be at work that day or want an early start for a long-distance drive home.

If you choose the 7AM early walk-off, there will be no one to help you with your luggage. It’s easy to forget how heavy your luggage is if it was checked at the pier for boarding and delivered to your stateroom.

If you plan to participate in the early walk-off option, be sure to pack lighter than if you were going to set your luggage in the corridor by midnight to be off-loaded by the crew.

Final Thoughts

If you need confirmation of what and what not to pack that is not allowed by the cruise line, check the fine print on their website.

Leave the excess at home. Here’s what I suggest. Go ahead and pack what you think you’ll need. 

Survey the situation (try to lift your suitcase and/or weigh it). Then, unpack and eliminate at least 1/3 of what you’ve got. Finally, repack. Do this one or two days before your cruise. You’ll thank me later.

Remember, don’t get bogged down with luggage that’s way too heavy. Keep the 35 year-old single malt Scotch at home rather than lose it to the security guard. No one should have to worry about lost heirloom jewelry or wish that they brought clothes that were more for comfort than the catwalk.

Hi Dolores, Thank you for your question. I’m not able to give out legal advice. I would suggest contacting the cruise line, the U.S. Embassy or Passport service.

When I worked at immigration/check-in at Royal Caribbean years ago (I wanted to learn the process) a child that fits your description (parents have different last names and the child has that dad’s surname), in order to board, the traveling parent needed a notarized letter from the other parent that the traveling parent had the right to take the child on the cruise. This of course was to avoid what would amount to kidnapping.

That’s what needed to be done 15 years ago. From my experience, it’s leaving the country (USA) not the entering of the other country that required the notarized letter.

Also, did you go onto the U.S. Passport site? I’m pretty sure it explains how to do what you need to do. Again, I am not able to give out legal advice on any matter. I’m only retelling what I experienced years ago.

Good luck, it’s definitely do-able and I think you’ll still need a notarized letter from your ex to allow you to travel with your child.

What is the rule regarding a child under 16 traveling on closed loop cruise from Miami to Nassau on a MSC line when the parents are divorced and child has surname of father and mother has her maiden name? I can’t find an answer on what Nassau’s rule might be but did find some ports require just a birth certificate for the child and some countries also . want a letter from the divorced parent for their permission to go on the cruise . Any info on this topic would be very much appreciated. If you can give me a contact in Nassau that can answer the question I can save you the trouble of researching it. Thanks again.

Hi Warren, Thank you for reading the article and taking the time to write. In your case, there’s no other choice. The article was directed more towards a general overview of what not to bring. Hopefully newer ships will be able to accommodate your CPAP machine a little easier with more outlets next to the bed. Happy sailing!

With regards to the extension cord. I sleep with a CPAP machine and the receptacle is rarely close enough to the night stand to plug the machine in. Therefore, I do need to have an extension cord with me.

Why dont they have a singles club where

travelers can locate others to share a room and sabe . maybe even find new friends ?

On the other hand, booking a night at a local hotel affords one a chance to eat a leisurely breakfast and latte, and enjoy one last morning aboard…perhaps take one last dip or grab that last-minute souvenir before leaving?
