This Colorful New Caribbean Resort Has Swim-up Suites and One of the Only Rooftop Pools on Barbados

O2 Beach Club & Spa is the luxury resort Barbados has been missing.

o2 travel caribbean

Barbados, a popular island getaway in the Caribbean, is already prized for its crystal-clear blue waters, pink-sand beaches, and rich cultural history. But now there's one more reason to visit the island: O2 Beach Club and Spa , which debuted in November 2021.

Located in the St. Lawerence Gap on the south coast of Barbados, the new luxury resort has 130 rooms and suites along with three pools — including one of the only rooftop pools on the island — and a full-service spa with the only Hamman available on the island. Keen to root the property with a firm sense of place, the hotel tapped local Caribbean designer Michelle Leotaud to design the resort with deliberate and alluring pops of color.

Within the property are three distinct room collections: club, luxury, and concierge, each with varying amenities. The club collection rooms typically include king or twin beds with en suite bathrooms, while the luxury collection is composed of adult-only suites with private balconies, oceanfront suites, and swim-up rooms with direct access to the adult-only river pool and bar. Finally, the concierge collection provides spacious one or two-bedroom suites with full kitchens to make the property feel more like home. Each room is decorated with laid-back, Caribbean-inspired accents, like work from local Bajan artists along with natural elements like wood and leaf motifs.

Better yet, the resort also has seven bars and six dining experiences with different cuisines and drink options available in each. Elements, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served, is an open-air space, and the main restaurant on the resort. It has a unique crescent-shaped bar and a sun terrace with cabanas and jacuzzi tubs. Some other notable restaurants at the resort are Brisa, a rooftop tapas lounge with ocean views, Bluefin Beachside Grill, a daytime dining spot, and Oro, a fine-dining experience with 360-degree views of the coast.

For those looking to make vacations as simple as can be, the resort is all-inclusive and includes unlimited access to the resort's dining experiences and bars, along with complimentary non-motorized water sports and a full activities program.

The O2 Beach Club and Spa in Barbados Is an All-Inclusive, Rum-Filled Island Escape

T he last time I visited Barbados was in 2019, and had I known that a global pandemic was right around the corner, I would have sat to take in the sunset a little longer on Crane Beach’s powdery white sand — and ordered another glass of rum. But finally, after a long couple of years, I recently returned to the southeastern Caribbean island and checked into the south coast’s newest hotel addition, O2 Beach Club & Spa .

The open-air lobby is a prelude to the bright airiness that characterizes the property. The Caribbean ocean plays peek-a-boo past one of three pools, and I’m immediately tempted to put my bags down and head straight toward the waves, but not before grabbing a rum punch first. Barbados is the birthplace of the spirit, after all. On the walk to my room, soca music filled the air, and there was no immediate sense of urgency for anything other than to revel in the cerulean ocean and light breeze. Bright fuchsia and white lounge chairs surround a pool with a swim-up bar, where guests have gathered to order colorful cocktails that range from piña coladas to mai tais. A perk of the all-inclusive property is that by the time you leave, you’ll likely have tried each one.

We hope you love the stays in Barbados we recommend! Just so you know, Matador may collect a small commission from the links on this page if you decide to book a stay.

The Property

The property reopened in November 2021 after renovations to include 130 rooms and suites that fall into three categories: club, luxury, and concierge. The club collection has features like en-suite bathrooms with rainfall showers, while the luxury collection has adults-only suites with direct access to the adult-only river pool and bar. Stepping into my room, it’s clear that Caribbean designer Michelle Leotaud was aiming for a decor that stays true to the region’s natural elements, including wood and leaf motifs. From my balcony, I can walk right into the river pool, but it’s the ocean that’s calling me (and rum).

02’s all-inclusive perks include complimentary non-motorized water sports and a full activities program. “How-to” classes are offered daily, and I immediately signed up for a cooking class and a lesson on playing the steel pan drum.

I took time to unwind in the property’s 5,600-square foot spa, Acqua . With panoramic views of the ocean framed by floor-to-ceiling windows, it’s easy to be tempted to simply sit and enjoy the view without even booking a treatment – but you’d be missing out if you skipped one. Not only does Acqua have the only hammam treatment room in Barbados, it also offers a Sleepy Time treatment, exclusive to concierge collection guests. This in-room treatment begins with dimmed lights and candles that set the tone for a moonlight massage on the balcony. If you can’t remember the last time you’ve been tucked in, you’re in for a treat, because the spa technician will literally tuck you into bed with a lavender-scented pillow and an infused tea to help aid sleep.

What to Eat

For lunch, I headed to Elements, where breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served in an open-air space with a bow-shaped bar overlooking the beach. That day the menu featured Italian food with dishes that ranged from mushroom risotto to wine-soaked mussels. There are six restaurants at O2, including more daytime dining at Bluefin Beachside, a rooftop tapas lounge called Brisa (which also has one of the island’s only rooftop pools), and Oro, a fine dining restaurant serving European and Caribbean fusion dishes like pan-seared snapper with basil, lime, and hot pepper in an intimate, low-lit room with 270-degree views of the southern coast. I settled on a forest mushroom soup with chives and a rack of lamb, both hearty and flavorful.

On my last night, I checked out a recently opened food truck court called Worthing Square Food Garden . Located on the island’s south coast just a few minutes from O2, the outdoor food hall features 20 food vendors that highlight Caribbean cuisine, like fiery jerk chicken from Jamaica, chickpea-filled doubles from Trinidad, and Barbados’ very own macaroni pie. As Barbados is the birthplace of rum, it’s only right that Worthing Square includes a Mount Gay Rum bar with an impressive list of cocktails as well. My favorite? A nutmeg-infused rum punch. If your thirst lingers, try one of the 1,500 rum shops on the island, including Kermitt’s Bar in Oistins Hill, Nigel Benn’s Aunty Bar in St. Andrew, and John Moore’s Bar in St. James, where you can grab a glass and watch residents play dominoes.

Though it’s filled with tourist attractions and noisy bars that I like to avoid, I couldn’t leave out a visit to the Gap for its famous streetside burger. A perfect fix after a night out bar hopping in the area, the roadside truck serves up juicy charred burgers without the frills, but with all the flavor, with a line of residents and tourists alike lining up by its flaming grill. The taste after the first bite is just as I remembered it, and I’m so thankful to have been able to fulfill this longing to return.

Best SIM Cards for Using Your Smartphone in the Caribbean

o2 travel caribbean

If you’re travelling to the Caribbean, having the right SIM card can save you lots of money. We review the best value SIM cards for using your phone in the Caribbean.

o2 travel caribbean

When you visit the Caribbean, one of the complications is the fact there are more than 7,000 islands across the region. They’re split into more than 30 different territories and countries, each of which has its own local mobile networks with different plans and pricing. This can make it difficult to compare network providers, especially if you’re looking to visit multiple destinations on your trip.

In this article, we’ll look at the different ways to use your smartphone in the Caribbean. This includes roaming on your UK SIM card and getting an eSIM plan for island hopping across the Caribbean. We’ll also discuss network compatibility with your UK handset.

  • 1 Using Your Mobile Phone In the Caribbean
  • 2.1 Best Roaming Deals For The Caribbean
  • 2.2 Standard Roaming Rates
  • 3 Buying A Local SIM Card On Arrival
  • 4 eSIMs For The Caribbean
  • 5 Handset & Network Compatibility
  • 6 More Information

Using Your Mobile Phone In the Caribbean

o2 travel caribbean

If you’re planning a trip to the Caribbean, there are three ways to use your mobile phone whilst you’re there:

  • Roam on a UK-based SIM card. This is the easiest and most convenient way to use your phone in the Caribbean. You’ll have a UK-based phone number (+44) and you’ll pay your UK mobile network for your usage.
  • Buy a local SIM card on arrival. You can get a SIM card from one of the local mobile networks when you arrive in the Caribbean. This can be complex and you may not be able to use it in other Caribbean destinations.
  • Buy a data-only eSIM for the Caribbean. You can get Airalo’s Island Hopper eSIM which is valid across 24 Caribbean destinations. It’s a data-only service so you’ll need to use your regular SIM card for phone calls and text messages (standard roaming rates will apply).

The following table shows a side-by-side comparison of the three options:

For most people, we’d recommend roaming on a UK-based SIM card. This is the easiest way to use your mobile phone in the Caribbean, especially if you’re planning to travel to more than one destination.

On VOXI’s Pay As You Go SIM card , you can add a Global Roaming Extra from just £15 for 8 days usage. There’s no contract and no credit check on the VOXI SIM card. You can also activate it with a UK plan for just £10 for one month’s usage.

If you have an eSIM-ready phone (including the iPhone 11, Galaxy S20, Pixel 3 and newer devices), Airalo’s Island Hopper eSIM is also worth considering. This covers 24 Caribbean destinations. However, you’ll only get 1GB data and it’s a data-only plan. This means you’ll need to find something else for calls and texts whilst you’re there.

Roaming On Your UK SIM Card

o2 travel caribbean

A major advantage when using a UK-based SIM card is the fact you’re able to set everything up before you even depart. You’ll also get one simple plan for roaming across multiple Caribbean destinations. The SIM card will allow you to call and text other UK-based phone numbers (including fellow holidaymakers who are travelling abroad with you, as well as friends and family back home in the UK).

Best Roaming Deals For The Caribbean

o2 travel caribbean

Your Global Roaming Extra can be used in the following 15 Caribbean destinations:

  • Antigua And Barbuda
  • Dominican Republic
  • Puerto Rico
  • St Kitts & Nevis
  • Trinidad and Tobago
  • Turks and Caicos
  • US Virgin Islands

N.B. If you’re visiting Guadeloupe or Martinique, this will be covered by VOXI’s European Roaming Pass instead of their Global Roaming Extra.

There’s no need to specify your destination in advance as the Global Roaming Extra will automatically cover all of the destinations. This makes it perfect if you’re visiting multiple Caribbean destinations as the Global Roaming Extra will work across all of them.

Your Global Roaming Extra will also work in the USA, Mexico, and various other destinations across Central and South America. This can be handy if you’re connecting flights somewhere else or incorporating a visit to another country on your trip.

The following table shows VOXI’s Global Roaming Extras:

o2 travel caribbean

If you’re not currently a VOXI customer, you can order a VOXI SIM card online . To activate it, you’ll need to buy a UK plan such as the £10 plan with 15GB of UK data . Even when you take this into account, it ends up being pretty good value (you’ll pay a total of £25: there’s the initial £10 plan in the UK, and then £15 for the Global Roaming Extra).

There’s no contract and no credit check on VOXI. Although you’re able to continue using the SIM card when you get back to the UK, there’s no commitment and you can pause or cancel at any time.

Get VOXI SIM Card (with £10 top-up) →

Standard Roaming Rates

As a premium tourist destination, a visit to the Caribbean doesn’t normally come cheap. It’s usually the same when you use your mobile phone there on the standard international roaming rates (VOXI’s Global Roaming Extras makes it a lot cheaper).

On the other mobile networks, the exact roaming rates you’ll pay will differ depending on where you’re travelling to in the Caribbean. As an indication of how much you might expect to pay, the following table shows the standard roaming rates for using your phone in Jamaica:

Comparison of roaming charges when using your UK-based SIM card in Jamaica. Prices may vary slightly for other Caribbean destinations. The costs shown are for phone calls and text messages to the UK. It’s always free to receive a text message wherever you are in the world.

If you’re taking a Caribbean cruise, it’s worth noting that the on-ship mobile networks are charged differently and will normally cost even more. For instance, EE currently charges £2.72/minute to make and receive phone calls on a ship and 67p to send a text message. Use of on-ship mobile networks is not included in VOXI’s Global Roaming Extras.

Buying A Local SIM Card On Arrival

o2 travel caribbean

If you’re only visiting a single Caribbean destination, you can normally save a little bit of money when you get a local SIM card on arrival. This is as long as you’re willing to jump through some hoops and the additional hassle of getting a SIM card when you’re there. You can normally expect to pay around US$10 (~£8.50) for a local SIM card in the Caribbean. This will give you an allowance of mobile data and local phone calls, but it won’t include phone calls to a UK-based number (+44).

If you’re visiting multiple Caribbean destinations, you’ll normally be better off getting a VOXI SIM Card or Airalo’s Island Hopper eSIM . This is because the local Caribbean SIM cards can normally be used only in the country or territory of purchase.

The local mobile networks will vary depending on where you’re visiting, but they might include Claro, Digicel, Flow, LIME and Orange.

eSIMs For The Caribbean

o2 travel caribbean

With an Airalo Island Hopper eSIM, you’ll get 1GB of data to use across 24 Caribbean destinations. This will cost you US$15 (approx £12.10), with validity of up to 7 days.

Airalo’s Island Hopper eSIM can be in used across the following 24 destinations:

  • British Virgin Islands
  • Cayman Islands
  • French Guiana
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis
  • Saint Lucia
  • Saint Vincent & Grenadines
  • Turks and Caicos Islands

A major advantage when getting an Island Hopper eSIM is the fact that it’s available straight away as an over-the-air download. It also covers a lot of destinations, making it the perfect service for anyone who’s travelling to multiple Caribbean destinations.

The disadvantage of getting an Island Hopper eSIM is the fact it’s a relatively expensive service (you’ll get 2GB data & 100 minutes for just a little bit more money on VOXI’s Global Roaming Extras). In addition, you’re getting a data-only service on the eSIM. This means your calls and texts will need to be made using a different SIM card (for which the standard international roaming rates may apply).

One way to save a little bit of money is by getting Airalo’s country-specific eSIMs (e.g. for the Dominican Republic , Jamaica and the Bahamas ). On the country-specific eSIMs, you’ll normally pay around US$9.50 (approx £8) for 1GB data to use over 7 days. However, the data allowance will then be restricted to only work in that specific destination and you’ll need to buy another plan if you’re going elsewhere.

Handset & Network Compatibility

o2 travel caribbean

Some of the bands and frequencies commonly used in the Caribbean include the following:

  • 3G: Band 1 (2100MHz), Band 2 (1900MHz), Band 5 (850MHz)
  • 4G: Band 2 (1900MHz), Band 3 (1800MHz), Band 4 (1700MHz), Band 5 (850MHz), Band 7 (2600MHz), Band 13 (700MHz), Band 17 (700MHz)

More Information

At present, VOXI’s Pay As You Go SIM is our recommended SIM card for use in Caribbean. You can find out more on the VOXI website , or see our in-depth guide to roaming on VOXI .

If you have an eSIM-ready phone, you can also consider Airalo’s Island Hopper SIM card. There’s more information about this on the Airalo website , or see our Airalo review .

Roaming in the Caribbean: prices and how to activate it

o2 travel caribbean

Are you thinking of traveling to the Caribbean on your next vacation? If so, do you want to connect to the internet through your cellular provider, but you don’t know about the rates that roaming offers you in the Caribbean? Don’t worry because, in this post, we will tell you everything you need to know to use roaming services in the Caribbean without going crazy trying.

In the first place, we will show you what the rates that cellular providers offer you to have internet in the Caribbean islands are. Likewise, we will tell you what the best alternatives are to get internet in the Caribbean without having to pay the infamous roaming service rates. Among these alternatives, we anticipate that the one that stands out the most, and in general, the best of all, is the new eSIM with data for the Caribbean .

o2 travel caribbean

Comparison of Roaming rates in the Caribbean with the main operators

Do you want to have at hand the rate of international roaming from operators? If so, we present the following comparison chart. There we will show you the data that each operator offers you and the price you must pay while you are in the Caribbean.

How much does the roaming service cost with the main cellular providers in the Caribbean?

We know that one of the things that you’re most interested in knowing before activating roaming services in the Caribbean is the price you have to pay to do so. Before commenting on the rates of each of these options, it’s important that you know the payment they have. Since unlike eSIM cards, the roaming service usually doesn’t offer you a data package but a consumption rate in MB. In other words, for each MB you use, you’ll have to pay a fairly high price , which makes it very expensive to connect with this service.

On the other hand because the rates of these operators work by zones and the Caribbean islands are in the same zone, the prices that you’ll have to pay for the roaming service will be the same , regardless of where in the Caribbean you are. In other words, the rates that you’ll see below will be the same whether you want to travel to Jamaica, Barbados, or any other island located in this American region.

Roaming in the Caribbean with AT&T

Starting with AT&T roaming, this operator offers several ways to connect to the internet while traveling. With the International Day Pass, users will have access to unlimited data, minutes, and messages for a daily price of $10. However, another option that users can get is the pay-as-you-go service. The consumption fee that users will have to pay will be as follows:

  • Calls:  $3 per minute.
  • Send texts:  $0.50/message
  • Send pictures and videos:  $1.30/message
  • Internet:  $2.05

Roaming rates with T-Mobile

On the other hand, using T-Mobile’s roaming service for your travels is a little different since it will depend on the plan you have with the company. That is, if you have one of T-Mobile’s Global Plans, you will be able to use roaming at no extra cost. However, if you have any other plan, you will have to pay for your consumption, and the rates are as follows:

  • Calls made:  $0.25/min.
  • SMS:  $0.50 per text.
  • Internet:  $15/MB.

What are Verizon’s rates for the roaming service in the Caribbean?

If you connect to the internet with Verizon through the roaming service during your trip to the Caribbean, you can use the Travel Pass, with which you can enjoy unlimited data, calls and text for $10 per day. However, if you use the pay-as-you-go service, the price you’ll have to pay is $2.05 for 1 MB. In addition, we present the following rates for other services:

  • Outgoing calls : $1.79 for each minute
  • Sent SMS:  $0.50 per each one.
  • SMS received: $0.50 per each one.

Finally, if you are a Telstra subscriber and you want to use your cellular phone services while traveling to the Caribbean, then you should know that you can only roam in Jamaica , and you can only use unlimited calls and SMS, not data. Alternative to Roaming in the Caribbean

In case the previous data rates for your trip to the Caribbean offered by the different cellular providers didn’t convince you, don’t worry. In addition to the roaming service, many other alternatives will allow you to connect to the internet in the Caribbean at a more reasonable price. To explain, these different options are:

Holafly eSIM cards

Considered the best way to get internet abroad, the eSIM with data for the Caribbean is one of the best options that will allow you to connect to the internet during your vacations in these heavenly islands that form this region. Among its most important advantages, we highlight the fact that they are very easy to activate and buy. Surely, as it’s a digital product, you can buy it at any time, anywhere in the world.

  • Purchase and activation processes in less than a minute.
  • 24-hour customer service
  • You can share data with your friends
  • You can keep both your original SIM and your WhatsApp number.

Disadvantages

  • You can’t make calls unless it’s through a digital means such as WhatsApp or Skype.
  • By all means, your smartphone must be compatible with eSIM. So, we recommend that you check the list of compatible cellphones.

Free WiFi in the Caribbean

Despite being a free alternative, Public WiFi is one of those options that should not be taken lightly just because of its low price. In fact, as it’s a network available to everyone close by, the security, and speed that it offers are quite poor. Therefore, it’s only recommended to use it when our stay is for a couple of days.

  • Unlimited internet
  • It’s found in different places.
  • In fact, it’s usually unstable and there’s a lot of lag
  • These networks are rarely protected against third parties, so they can be easily hacked. This is a big disadvantage since important information such as emails and passwords can be stolen from you.

Rent Pocket WiFi for the Caribbean

Lastly, Pocket WiFi, despite being quite an expensive product as well as the roaming service, can also be an option to consider, more than anything, due to the feature of providing internet to more than one cellular device.

  • They offer a low amount of data.
  • It’s portable, so you can take it almost anywhere.
  • If you lose it, you’ll have to pay for it since it’s not protected against loss or theft.
  • You must top it up in advance. Otherwise, you won’t be able to get a data connection
  • It’s more expensive than prepaid SIM cards for the Caribbean.

How to activate roaming in the Caribbean?

Overall, now you know what the roaming rates are with each cellular operator in the Caribbean. If you still want to connect to the internet, what you should do is follow the instructions depending on the cellular provider you choose.

  • AT&T:  Activate the roaming option through your cellphone’s settings.
  • T-Mobile:  call #RON# to activate it.
  • Verizon:  Go to “Settings” on your device, press on the “Mobile/Cellular Data” option, and then press on the “Roaming” option.
  • Vodafone:  you can activate it from its website in the private area or My Vodafone App.
  • O2:  text O2TRAVEL to 23336.
  • Three:  Go to your device’s settings, then go to the cellular data option and turn on the roaming.
  • Optus:  You can activate it through the My Optus app.
  • Rogers:  go to “Settings”, find the “Mobile/Cellular Data” menu, and then press on the “Roaming” option.
  • Telus:  you can activate it through the company website or send a message to 7626.
