Since summer is just around the corner, it’s likely you’re already dreaming of where to spend your vacation.

You won’t be alone. The June-to-August season is the USA ’s busiest travel season, with warm days across the entire country drawing big crowds and higher prices. Music and food festivals as well as outdoor activities ensure that summer is the liveliest time to travel the country. Kids are out of school, and some of the country’s outdoor spaces, including national parks , are fully open for the season.

Whether you’re ready to brave the crowds to see some of the most incredible, best-known places or you want to get a bit more off the beaten path, here are 14 incredible places for a summer vacation in the United States.

Couple hiking in Glacier National Park, Montana

1. Glacier National Park, Montana

Few places on earth are as magnificent and pristine as Glacier National Park . Protected in 1910 during the first flowering of the American conservationist movement, Glacier ranks with Yellowstone, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon among the United States’ most astounding natural wonders. The glacially carved remnants of an ancient thrust fault left a brilliant landscape of towering snowcapped pinnacles laced with plunging waterfalls and glassy turquoise lakes. The mountains are surrounded by dense forests, which host a virtually intact pre-Columbian ecosystem. Grizzly bears still roam in abundance, and smart park management has kept the place accessible and authentically wild.

Although the park remains open year-round, most services are closed between October and mid-May, making a summer visit the best, if not only, time to get the park’s full offering. Going-to-the-Sun Rd , which crosses Glacier National Park, opens when crews finish plowing the snow, which could be as late as July.

2. Mackinac Island, Michigan

From either Mackinaw City or St Ignace, you can catch a ferry to Mackinac Island, Michigan . The island’s location in the straits between Lake Michigan and Lake Huron made it a prized port in the North American fur trade, and a site the British and Americans battled over many times. The most important date on this 3.8-sq-mile island was 1898 – the year cars were banned in order to encourage tourism. Today, all travel is by horse or bicycle; even the police use bikes to patrol the town. Eighty percent of Mackinac Island is state parkland.

The crowds of tourists – called Fudgies by the islanders – can be crushing at times, particularly during summer weekends. But when the last ferry leaves in the evening and clears out the day-trippers, Mackinac’s real charm emerges as you drift back into another, slower era.

3. Lewes, Delaware

This tiny, darling dot on the coast is known as the “First Town in the First State ” and is a must-visit come summer. The main attraction in Lewes is its gorgeous, wheelchair-accessible beach, part of the 5000-acre Cape Henlopen State Park  – which also contains a nature reserve with excellent programming (bird walk, anyone?). But the entire town will draw you with its historic Victorian homes, some dating from the 1700s, treasure-filled antique shops and beachy boutiques, multiple restaurants and the not-to-be-missed King’s Homemade Ice Cream .

View remnants of the War of 1812 and other relics at Cannonball House, part of the 90-minute Lewes Legends Walking Tour, which brings local history to life every Wednesday evening. Explore the Saturday morning Historic Lewes farmers market, then make your way to Eggcelent for a divine breakfast spread. Take a seat at an outdoor table at The Station on Kings , a knock-out cafe, restaurant and home and garden store that begs to be photographed, as does the adjacent Marigold Creamery ice cream truck. Reserve at table at Heirloom or pop into Striper Bites for a scrumptious dinner and drinks. Be sure to get out on the water, too: we love Cape Water Tours “Dolphin Watch” cruise.

4. The Big Island, Hawaii

The island of Hawai’i (most often referred to as “the Big Island”) is the largest of the state ’s chain of islands, and it’s full of scenic beauty, miles of volcanic rock formations, breathtaking peaks and valleys, waterfalls, trails and rugged beaches (including the Papakōlea green-sand beach ). With eight of the world’s 13 climate zones, the island of Hawai’i is ecologically diverse to an astounding degree, with thousands of unique species of plants and animals.

A car is a must with so much to see, but the roads are rarely crowded (save for rush-hour traffic around Kona and Hilo ). Dive with manta rays in Captain Cook, ride horses in Wailea , stargaze near the summit of Mauna Kea , swim at Mahaiʻula Beach and most definitely take a hike in stunning  Volcanoes National Park . Better yet, plan to shack up at the historic Volcano House inside the park, where Mark Twain once stayed. Start the day by sipping a hot cup of Kona coffee at 4000ft and wrap it up with a sunset mai tai aboard a catamaran followed by a delicious dinner at Moon and Turtle in Hilo.

Beach front houses on the sandy coast of North Carolina.

5. Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina ’s Outer Banks are fragile ribbons of sand tracing the Atlantic coastline for more than 100 miles, separated from the mainland by sounds and waterways. Broken up by villages, the ribbon of Cape Hatteras National Seashore  is home to several noteworthy lighthouses. A meandering drive down Hwy 12, which connects much of the Outer Banks and makes up part of the Outer Banks National Scenic Byway (and its 21 coastal villages), is one of the truly great American road trips.

The quaint waterfront area of Manteo is a pleasant base from which to explore the Outer Banks. Near the harbor is the Roanoke Island Festival Park , where visitors can learn about the first English colonies on North American soil. In summer, be sure to catch an atmospheric amphitheater performance by Lost Colony Outdoor Drama , which portrays the story of the colonists who arrived in Manteo in the 1580s (before the European settlers arrived at Plymouth Rock) – and then disappeared.

6. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park is the wild, free-flowing, beating heart of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. Its real showstoppers are the geysers and hot springs – nature’s crowd-pleasers – yet at every turn this land of fire and brimstone breathes, belches and bubbles like a giant kettle on the boil. The park’s highways traverse these geysers, through meadows and forests, past roadside herds of bison and campsites aromatic with pine needles and family campfires. In between lies the country’s largest collection of elk, the continent’s oldest and largest wild bison herds, and a pristine wilderness roamed by wolves, grizzlies, moose and antelope.

June to August is the busiest time to visit Yellowstone (when more than half of the park's visitors arrive), perhaps because it’s the time of year when the full range of visitor services, accommodations and entrances to the park is open. Hotel rates peak at gateway towns, park campgrounds fill by lunchtime – and reservations are essential.

7. Boston, Massachusetts

Boston ’s history recalls revolution and transformation, and today the city is still among the country’s most forward-thinking and barrier-breaking cities. For all intents and purposes, Boston is the oldest city in the US, and you can hardly walk a step over its cobblestone streets without running into some historic site. Yet Boston has not been relegated to the past. A history of cultural patronage means that the city’s art and music scenes continue to charm and challenge contemporary audiences. Cutting-edge urban-planning projects are reshaping the city even now, as neighborhoods are revived and reinvigorated. Historic universities and colleges still attract scientists, philosophers and writers, who shape the city’s evolving culture.

Although summers in Boston are hot and humid, the city is noticeably quieter when students have vacated and Bostonians head to their summer homes. When you need to beat the heat, join them at the irresistible North Shore beaches nearby, which draw crowds thanks to the hot sun and cold sea.

8. San Diego, California

San Diego calls itself “America’s Finest City” – which embodies the breezy confidence and sunny cheer that filters down here even to folks you encounter every day on the street. The city may feel like a collection of villages, each with its own personality , yet San Diego is the nation’s eighth-largest city. And even with its huge size, there’s probably nowhere more laid-back on earth.

What’s not to love? San Diego bursts with world-famous attractions for the entire family, including the zoo and the museums of Balboa Park . And that’s not to mention the excellent seafood, a buzzing downtown and beautiful hikes for all , plus more than 60 beaches and  perhaps the USA’s most perfect weather.

9. Chicago, Illinois

Steely skyscrapers, top chefs, rocking festivals: the Windy City will blow you away with its low-key, cultured awesomeness. It’s hard to know what to gawk at first in Chicago . High-flying architecture is everywhere, from the stratospheric, glass-floored Willis Tower to Frank Gehry’s swooping silver Pritzker Pavilion to Frank Lloyd Wright’s stained-glass-filled  Robie House . Whimsical public art studs the streets; you might be walking along and...wham, there’s an abstract Picasso statue that’s not only cool to look at, but climbable, too. For art museums, take your pick: Impressionist masterpieces at the massive Art Institute of Chicago , psychedelic paintings at the midsize  National Museum of Mexican Art or outsider drawings at the small Intuit gallery .

Chicago’s peak visitor season is June through August. Summertime festivals rock Chicago’s neighborhoods almost every weekend, and  Millennium Park plays hosts to many concerts downtown. Fireflies glow everywhere. It can be hot and humid, but who cares?

10. Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is one of the world’s most famous mountain destinations, but that doesn’t mean it’s just for winter skiing. Aspen takes on new shades and personalities with the seasons . In fall, the hills are set afire with the quaking of a million golden aspen leaves. In winter, the slopes come to life and the party hits maximum velocity. Come springtime, the flowers start to bud near the mirrored alpine lakes. And finally, in summer – ah, summer in Aspen! – everything comes together, with music festivals, arts, miles upon miles of trails to explore and perfect days under the bluebird-hued Colorado sky.

There are excellent restaurants at nearly every corner of the historic downtown area. Top it off with an understated chic that permeates nearly everything you do, eat, see and experience here, and you have the makings of maybe the best mountain vacation ever.

11. Portland, Oregon

Best-in-class coffee. The most food carts. Top craft breweries. The world-famous quirkiness. Portland is a city of indie-spirited superlatives and humble, offbeat charms. Portland has an almost unfair abundance of natural beauty: perfect parks , leafy trees, vibrantly flowering shrubs lining pretty residential streets, the Willamette River meandering through town and Mt Hood on the horizon. Summer in Portland sees festivals galore, including the Oregon Brewers Festival and the Bite of Oregon. Long-awaited wildflowers reach their peak bloom in early summer.

12. Grand Canyon, Arizona

No matter how much you read about the Grand Canyon or how many photographs you’ve seen, nothing really prepares you for the sight of it: it’s so startlingly familiar and iconic and simply awe-inspiring, you can’t take your eyes off it. The canyon’s immensity, the sheer intensity of light and shadow at sunrise or sunset, even its very age, scream for superlatives. The Grand Canyon embodies the scale and splendor of the American West , through its dramatic vistas, dusty trails and stories of exploration, preservation and exploitation.

Most visitors head to canyon’s South Rim  – yet the summer months are the best time to visit the North Rim , which is open only from mid-May to mid-October. The North Rim is Grand Canyon plus. Here, the elevation is a little higher, the temperatures are a little cooler, the trails are a little steeper and the views…yeah, they’re a little bigger. Since this side gets more rain and snow, erosion has chewed deeper into the North Rim, creating mazes of side canyons while leaving sky islands and temples towering above the Colorado River.

13. South Walton, Florida

Sandwiched between Destin and Panama City along Scenic Hwy 30A in the Florida Panhandle are 16 unincorporated communities collectively known as South Walton. Each town has its own identity, most master-planned resort towns with architecture following set themes. If you only make two stops, we recommend delightful Grayton Beach , which feels as though it was settled by old-school hippies who came into money (stay a night here if you can) and the meticulously manicured village of Seaside, which is so well planned they filmed The Truman Show here. Other points of interest include the whimsically named community of WaterColor, Moroccan-themed Alys Beach and the Dutch-inspired hamlet of Rosemary Beach.

St Francis River at Lee's Bluff in the Ozarks, Missouri

14. The Ozarks, Missouri

Even though flashy Branson receives the lion’s share of tourists (nowhere in the USA will you find more family-friendly entertainment, with huge hokey musicals in abundance), hiking and river floating are the two best reasons to visit the Ozarks . Indeed, beyond Branson, nature rules in this mountain range, which straddles Missouri , Arkansas and Oklahoma . The Ozarks’ true charms can be found in its rolling hills and deep clefts, where wild spring-fed rivers carry legions of happy people floating downstream. The Ozark National Scenic Riverways – the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers – boast 134 miles of splendid canoeing and inner-tubing. Back on land, you never know when you’ll stumble onto another tiny village seemingly conjured up on a Hollywood back lot.

Montreal, Canada

Highlights: Epic city views from the observation wheel, cobblestone streets, grand cathedrals

September is a great time to vacation in Montreal, when the summer weather is still in full swing, and the tourists have left for the season. This is also when you will start to see greater hotel availability and rates starting to drop.

It is a comfortable time of the year to walk the streets to see the 18th-century architecture in Old Montreal ( Vieux-Montreal ) and practice your photography skills on the cobblestone streets as you enjoy the cathedrals and coffee shops. Take advantage of the mild weather to explore the manicured grounds at the Parc du Mont-Royal or get a panoramic view of the city from the Montreal Observation Wheel .

If you have more time, plan on some additional time in beautiful Quebec City , less than three hours away.

Havasu Falls in the Grand Canyon

Highlights: Sunrise from the South Rim lookouts, natural colors of the canyon that change throughout the day

If you can hold off your Grand Canyon trip until the end of summer, then September is the best time to do it. This is when most of the vacation crowds have left for the season and the awesome hiking trails are still open. This Arizona wonder is a vacation bucket-list topper for many people, but trying to navigate the crowds can oftentimes diminish the experience.

Besides large numbers of people, the intense mid-summer heat can be unbearable. September has cooler temperatures, fewer people crowding the trails, and much greater availability, not to mention better rates on hotel rooms.

To pack some more experiences into your trip, you should consider basing in Williams , Arizona along Route 66, also known as the gateway to the Grand Canyon. There are many activities and Old West experiences in that area.

Then, catch the Grand Canyon Railway for the two-plus-hour ride to the South Rim, taking in the surrounding landscape along the way; spend the day exploring the Grand Canyon with a rail return late afternoon.

If you plan to hike in the Grand Canyon or take part in the mule trips offered on the trails, you will need to drive to the park to spend more time. Sunrise is especially beautiful, and lunch at the historic El Tovar Hotel is recommended.

Park Guell in Barcelona

Highlights : World-famous attractions and experiences like La Sagrada Familia and Las Ramblas; iconic city view from Barcelona's Port Carmel Car

The busy and beautiful city of Barcelona is one of Spain's most stunning destinations , and September is an ideal time to visit. Summer vacation crowds can make lines long at the top attractions, like La Sagrada Familia , and oftentimes limit availability if you do not book days ahead of time.

The streets in popular areas like the historic Barri Gòtic and Las Ramblas can be so overcrowded in the high season that most of your time is spent just getting from point A to point B. Crowd concerns are lessened in September when there are fewer vacationers, so you can enjoy all the attractions and fun things to do in Barcelona with fewer people and cooler temperatures.

Early in September days can still be warm enough to head to the ocean but beaches near Barcelona are not busy at this time of year. Late in the month, you can enjoy La Merce , a festive celebration with daily parades, acrobats, and entertainment.

Pink sand beach at Elafonissi

Highlight: The beaches, including Elafonissi and its famous pink sands.

The Greek island of Crete is a natural sensory spectacle of mountains, turquoise water, beautiful beaches , and palm forests that are pleasant to experience in September. Flowers are in full bloom, and water temperatures are ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

The summer months, while still a great time to visit, can get quite hot when you are spending the days out in the sun walking the streets of the old towns or exploring archeological sites like Knossos . Many of the beaches in the summertime are overcrowded, but September enables you to enjoy the pink sands of Elafonissi more comfortably.

Many visitors arrive by air or ferry in Heraklion . Other popular tourist towns on the island include Rethymnon , Chania , and Agios Nikolaos .

Besides the cooler September temperatures and fewer people, you can find lower rates for hotels.

Congress Square in Buenos Aires

Highlights : Pedestrian-friendly streets enable you to walk to many of the top sites and attractions

September is springtime in Buenos Aires, Argentina . This shoulder season has a number of advantages over the peak tourist season in January and February. The cooler temperatures make it comfortable to enjoy strolling the streets in areas like Palermo and Plaza de Mayo to see the parks, architecture, and museums the neighborhoods are known for.

With fewer tourists this time of year, attractions like the city's rose garden, Paseo del Rosedal , and the Fair of the Mataderos market will be enjoyable. You will also have a better chance at securing a space on a tour of the Casa Rosada presidential palace, which is one of the must-see attractions on most tourists' itineraries. While entry is free, the guided tours fill up fast, especially during the busy summer season.

September is a great time to score affordable hotel rates and plenty of availability. This makes it easier to add a few days onto your itinerary and make some day trips from Buenos Aires to places like Iguazú Falls, which is one of the top attractions in Argentina .

Waikiki Beach with Diamond Head in the distance

Highlights : Stunning beaches, hiking to Diamond Head, the USS Arizona memorial

If you are looking for an ideal (and more affordable) time to visit Honolulu, Hawaii on the island of Oahu then September is it. From festivals, cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and pleasant water conditions, there are so many reasons to target Honolulu for travel this month. September is a month filled with Aloha festivals and parades, so you will have many opportunities to enjoy Hawaii's culture.

The comfortable September weather makes it pleasant for hiking to Diamond Head ; relaxing on Waikiki Beach and nearby beaches ; and spending time at the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument , the memorial for the USS Arizona and the sailors who died during the Pearl Harbor attack.

Fewer tourists in September means more availability at hotels, and you can likely find great deals as resorts look to fill rooms.

Fitz Roy, Patagonia

Highlight: Outdoor adventures surrounded by mountains and glaciers

A trip to Patagonia in September is great from both Chile and Argentina . It is an ideal time to go for those who love the outdoors and want to explore the Andes Mountains , glaciers, and seemingly endless vistas. This is a great time for hiking in Patagonia , when the days are longer and a little warmer, with less rain than other months of the year.

September is springtime in Patagonia, which means colorful blooms of flowers, vibrant green vegetation, and the arrival of the first penguins that flock to the region to mate. Since it is early in the season, some hotels may not yet be open, but for the ones that are, you can find great deals.

With fewer tourists this time of year, you will also have better views in the tourist areas and more availability on organized tours.

The Capitol of Puerto Rico, San Juan

Highlight : The combination of nature, history, beaches, and culinary experiences in one place

The upside to visiting Puerto Rico in September is the steep discounts that you will find on hotel rooms and airfare, along with an abundance of availability for both. Take your pick from fabulous resorts in San Juan that position you between the colonial architecture of the city and the beautiful beaches along the coast.

The downside is the risk of inclement weather since it is in hurricane season. It is a trade-off, but one that might be worth it in order to experience Flamenco Beach and south Vieques Beach, home of the bioluminescent Mosquito Bay , without many other tourists.

This is a comfortable time to explore the streets of San Juan , including Old San Juan , and the El Yunque National Rainforest to take in the natural beauty of the island. There are many types of tours throughout Puerto Rico, like culinary experiences to cocoa farms and outdoor excursions, which will have more availability in September.

Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Highlight : Wildlife viewing, touring the famous Victoria Falls

September is in the middle of the dry season in Zimbabwe, so wildlife viewing is at its peak. It can be a nice alternative to Tanzania and Kenya , which are other popular destinations for safari vacations. This is a great month to witness hippos, lions, rhinoceros, and crocodiles resting or heading to a watering hole.

Zimbabwe offers so much more than just safari treks. September weather is nice to visit Victoria Falls . This is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world . At this time of year you can hike, photograph, take helicopter tours, and try white water rafting.

September is also a good month to visit Matobo National Park , where you can witness unusual rock formations and monuments and learn about the culture through the paintings of the bushmen from the region.

Istanbul, Turkey

Highlight: Shopping at the Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest markets in the world.

One of the best times to visit Istanbul is in September, when you have a better opportunity to fully experience the top attractions without the crowds that can make them tough to experience during the high tourist season, which runs from June through August.

There are comfortable temperatures in September making it easy to enjoy shopping and the popular attractions like the Blue Mosque , Hagia Sophia Museum , and the Grand Bazaar , which are all easy to explore on foot as you walk around the city. You will have more time and space to enjoy Istanbul's archaeological museums and parks in the historic district.

The pleasant weather and fewer tourists make it ideal to fully experience the deep history and architecture that Istanbul is known for. This is also when you will find affordable rates for hotel rooms and airfare. If you have time to add other stops onto your trip, you can experience other cities like Troy and Izmir , which are easy to get to from Istanbul.

Charlottetown Harbor on Prince Edward Island

Highlights : Hiking, markets, festivals, beaches, and culinary experiences

Canada's Prince Edward Island, located near Nova Scotia , is a pristine September getaway filled with seafood, farmers' markets, and outdoor experiences. By the end of the month, some of the beaches and attractions will prepare for closing for the season, but this shoulder month is a great time to visit if you want the PEI experience without all the summer tourists.

Strolling on the beach is a more likely activity than swimming, since water temperatures are cooling, but you can enjoy the bountiful and fresh food in PEI during culinary demonstrations, festivals, and tours. For some time outdoors before the winter season, take a hike on some of the trails at Prince Edward Island National Park .

Shanghai, China

Highlights: The nighttime extravaganza of lights and activity along the Bund waterfront

As one of the best places to visit in China , Shanghai is almost always busy with people — after all, it is a city with a population of 26 million — but September has some advantages over other months of the year. September marks the end of the high tourist season, so you will begin to see temperatures and hotel rates start to decline, especially by the end of the month.

This is a great time to stay at one of the luxury or boutique hotels in Shanghai that you might not otherwise fit into your budget.

As the seasons start to transition into Shanghai's brief fall period, the humidity will be lower, making it more comfortable to enjoy walking the narrow neighborhood streets and vendor stalls and hitting some of the best views of the city from the Shanghai World Financial Center .

September evenings along the Bund will feel nice as you enjoy the visual spectacle of the lights along the water and the prime opportunities for spectacular photographs .

Namche Bazaar, Nepal

Highlight: Trekking in the Everest and Annapurna regions, a variety of hikes for all skill levels

Timing is important for many reasons when you consider a trip to Nepal, and September is one of the best months to go. It is a great time to visit to hike and avoid the crowds that can cause delays and aggravation on the trails during busier months. September is when travelers are just beginning to return to the region, when the rainfall is lower and the air is cooler.

This month is when many of the popular treks in the Everest and Annapurna regions, making up two of the most popular hikes in the world , are starting to open, so you can secure a spot early in the season.

Fewer crowds this time of year are also a bonus on the busy streets of Kathmandu, which are fun to photograph — it can get quite congested at other times of the year, making it tough to visit popular sites and temples.

Since September is on the fringe of the busy fall season in October, you can still find great hotel deals before the rest of the tourists arrive.

Sea lions on the beach in the Galapagos Islands

Highlight: Prime whale-watching and other wildlife viewing opportunities

A trip to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador is great almost any time of the year, but the month of September has a few advantages. With viewing of native species among the top reasons to visit, September offers some of the best opportunities to see whales, dolphins, and penguins that inhabit the islands.

It is also mating season for many of the animals, so they are especially active this time of the year. September in the Galapagos is dry and cool, so weather conditions are comfortable for outdoor activities. There are fewer tourists at the end of summer, which means more availability on boat tours and other excursions like land tours.

O'Brien's Tower, Cliffs of Moher, Ireland

Highlight: The many shades of green to see across the Irish countryside

Ireland is lush and beautiful no matter when you visit, but if you're hoping for a dry(ish), less crowded experience on the Emerald Isle, visiting in September is a great bet. Highs hover around the 55 degree Fahrenheit mark, which means you'll need a sweater or coat, but not much more. Bonus points for packing a rain jacket, as you'll definitely be in for a sprinkle or two—this is Ireland, after all.

Top tourist attractions are open to the public in September, and you'll have the bonus of shorter lines and fewer people to mar the background of your sightseeing selfies.

While you may not want to lie on Ireland's best beaches for hours wearing a bikini in September, you can certainly enjoy its top fishing destinations and adorable small towns .

Don't miss Ireland's greatest cities , like Dublin , Galway , and Northern Ireland's Belfast . These buzzing hubs are where you'll find the best restaurants, top museums, lively musical performances, and a slew of fun things to do.

Explore the Ring of Kerry , visit the impressive Giant's Causeway (in Northern Ireland), and grab a bite in Dingle .

There's little to dislike about the Amalfi Coast, especially if you visit in September. Traveling at this time means you're in for massive perks like fewer crowds; mild temperatures (highs are in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit); warm water to swim in; and lower prices on resorts, hotels and attractions.

Add the area's remarkable beauty and impressive sightseeing opportunities, and you'll pat yourself on the proverbial back for timing your vacation so perfectly.

It's best to hire a driver if you plan to tour the famous Amalfi Drive (also known as the SS163), a winding cliff-top adventure more beautiful than mere words can describe. This is one of the popular things to do on the Amalfi Coast .

Be sure to make stops in the postcard perfect towns of Positano , Amalfi , Sorrento , and Ravello . You'll want to plan time to enjoy a meal (or many) in their fabulous restaurants.

Hop on a cruise to get a better view of the colorful houses climbing the hills of this plush region and be sure to stop in Capri for a little shopping, eating, and exploration.

Speaking of the water, it's important to visit at least a few of the best beaches on the Amalfi Coast during your trip. The September weather will ensure a comfortable day by the sea.

McWay Falls, Big Sur

Highlights: Beaches and waterfalls that are show-stoppers and worth the time to stop and admire their color and beauty

If you're searching for a romantic getaway in September, look no further than California's remote, Big Sur. The warmest month of the year, September presents visitors with highs in the upper 60s Fahrenheit and lows around 55 degrees, perfect for exploring the captivatingly gorgeous rugged coast.

September usually means clearer, sunnier skies, which makes this an ideal time to hit the beach and ogle the dramatic waterfalls crashing over 80 feet to the azure ocean below. If you're a fan of natural beauty, you'll find it hard to leave this breathtaking spot.

Top attractions in Big Sur are less crowded in September, so you may have Pfeiffer Beach almost to yourself. Walk hand in hand through Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park , enjoying the refreshingly salty breeze coming off the ocean. Head to Point Lobos State Natural Reserve for a scuba dive, hike, or photography expedition. Plan a camping trip to Big Sur . It's one of the best places to visit for nature lovers.

Niagara Falls

Highlight: The world-famous Niagara Falls waterfall and the many ways to experience it

It's been said that the best view of Niagara Falls is enjoyed from the Canadian side. Once you've come face to cascade with this monstrous world wonder, you'll realize that this statement is true, and you'll understand why it's been deemed one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the world .

Visit during September for the most comfortable temperatures and less crowded conditions, which will make sightseeing a pleasure. Early fall also sees a drop in hotel prices, which is a bonus.

You can expect highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s, which is acceptably pleasant. Pack a sweater, as the temperature always feels colder by the falls, and a waterproof jacket if you're planning to get close enough to feel the water.

While the falls are the number one tourist attraction in Niagara Falls , exploring Journey Behind the Falls is a must, as is boarding a Hornblower Cruise to get up close and personal with the massive cascade.

The Skylon Tower offers fabulous views, as well as two restaurants, and riding the Niagara Skywheel , the largest observation wheel in Canada, is a fun thing to do for families.

Autumn colors in False Creek, Vancouver

Highlights: Outdoor events like hiking, festivals, and farmers' markets

There is so much to enjoy about Vancouver in September. One of the best places to visit in Canada in the early fall, Vancouver offers so many interesting and beautiful tourist attractions that you're bound to find something you love.

Are you a foodie? There are tons of top restaurants in Vancouver, as well as food festivals galore. Outdoor enthusiast? Climb the Grouse Grind up Grouse Mountain, wander through Stanley Park , hit the beach , or take an invigorating hike — there's plenty to choose from.

Maybe you're a history buff. Head to the Museum of Anthropology , or stroll through Gastown , the city's oldest section. The Vancouver Art Gallery is another must-visit. See, the options for fun attractions in Vancouver are endless.

September sees multiple farmers markets in various locations throughout the city, as well as guided walking tours, live music, and theater performances.

Why not bring the kids for a long weekend away? There are plenty of entertaining things to do in Vancouver with kids .

Best places to visit in the USA, by month

January: Colorado

1.  January: Colorado

It’s no secret that Colorado ski resorts are among the country’s best, but that's not all this state has to offer outdoor enthusiasts in the winter. Try your hand at heli-skiing (that's dropping from a helicopter rather than a ski lift) in the backcountry at Telluride , bask in natural hot springs after your ride down the mountain in Steamboat Springs , or embrace winter camping and dog sledding at the refurbished mine town of  Dunton Hot Springs,  where you'll find an Old West saloon, the opportunity to ice climb and, of course, more hot springs.

February: Yellowstone National Park

2.  February: Yellowstone National Park

This world-famous Wyoming National Park  is always spectacular, and while it’s understandably mainly visited in warmer months, if you can get there in February you’ll be in for a real treat, with the whole place transformed into an other-worldly wintery wilderness. Animals are much easier to spot in the snow, with the most notable example being bison, complete with their shaggy winter coats, and the steam from the geysers is far more pronounced.

March: Hawaii

3.  March: Hawaii

Hawaii enjoys beautiful weather and comfortable temperatures year-round, with thermometers reliably staying above 79°F and below 88°F, but March and April are particularly pleasant times to visit, slipping in between the spring and summer vacation seasons. From the massive volcanoes on the Big Island (Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and Kilauea), and the Na Pali cliffs of Kauai , to the pristine beaches of Oahu —every part of the state is stunning. But if you have to pick just one spot to see while you're there, we recommend heading to the very top of Maui, where the Haleakalā crater's huge caldera's landscape is otherworldly.

April: Washington DC

4.  April: Washington DC

Despite being such a historic city, Washington DC keeps evolving—even now, new museums are breaking ground. There's one more big reason to head to D.C. this spring, too: cherry blossom season. While Japan’s cherry blossom season seems to grab most of the world’s attention, Washington D.C. has a pretty good one too, which typically spans late March into early April. The best place to see it is the Tidal Basin, where over 3,000 trees are transformed with radiant blooms. And you can still get your obligatory selfie with the White House/Lincoln Memorial/National Mall while you're in town.

May: The Mighty Five

5.  May: The Mighty Five

No idea what The Mighty Five is? We're talking about Utah 's wild landscape, which is connected by a series of five national parks— Zion , Bryce Canyon , Capitol Reef , Canyonlands , and Arches.  There's also the iconic  Monument Valley, which is located in the nearby Navajo nation; you've seen it on the silver screen in almost every John Wayne western and it hasn't changed an iota since. In all five destinations, notice massive sandstone formations, twisty slot canyons and dark skies bursting with stars that up the beauty ante.

June: The West Coast

6.  June: The West Coast

Sound the road trip klaxon!  California  and the Pacific Northwest are calling. Head out in June to avoid the July 4th madness, when roads in the U.S. will be crammed with long weekenders on their way to family barbecues and baseball games, and take the whole month to discover the best of the West Coast. Whether you want to catch some rays in  San Diego , forest bathe in  Oregon , tour  Seattle ’s street art or simply make the most of  Vancouver 's least rainy month of the year, this slice of North America is as diverse as its days are long.

July: Alaska

7.  July: Alaska

July is a wonderful month to spot caribou, wolves and golden eagles in Denali National Park , as well as grizzly bears, who are busy hunting salmon in order to fatten up before hibernation. They also nibble on the season’s abundant berries—blueberries are particularly fat and juicy in Alaska—and you can taste them too on almost any hike and around the stunning Glacier Bay National Park .

August: Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island

8.  August: Acadia National Park and Mount Desert Island

At the far reaches of the northeast coastline of America is Acadia National Park , which covers much of Mount Desert Island (beautiful Bar Harbor is here, too) and beyond. Crashing Atlantic Ocean waves hit rocky beaches, massive granite rock formations loom and quiet forests, lakes and ponds await you here. Once you've experienced this achingly lovely island sanctuary, there are plenty of Maine 's famed lobster roll stands waiting near town ready to feed you the state's delicious crustacean.

September: Great Smoky Mountains National Park

9.  September: Great Smoky Mountains National Park

America's most visited national park, the Great Smoky Mountains is a place where the easygoing rhythm of the South combines with an outdoor lover's heaven. Hike in to see lovely waterfalls and expansive views filled with mountains and forests, fish for trout in a quiet stream (you'll need a permit) and peep at a riot of colors during the autumn foliage change. You might run into someone hiking the Appalachian Trail, too. More than 70 miles of that 2,190-mile path run through the national park.

October: New Mexico

10.  October: New Mexico

There’s a lot more to New Mexico than desert and a certain Netflix show. Every October,   Albuquerque   hosts its eye-popping International Balloon Fiesta , where you can spot hundreds of technicolor hot air balloons as they make their spectacular ascent. With seemingly endless skies and epic sunrises, it’s become the world’s largest balloon festival and the most photographed event on Earth. Also make time to visit   Santa Fe , in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains for a mix of Spanish colonial architecture and earth-colored historic adobe neighborhoods, plus a comprehensive Georgia O'Keefe Museum dedicated to her artistic legacy and American modernism.

November: Las Vegas

11.  November: Las Vegas

As the names of artists now getting residencies in Las Vegas get bigger and more relevant (like Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars), so does Sin City’s credibility as an entertainment destination. So do catch a  show  while you’re there but, since temperatures are pleasantly cool at this time of year, now is also the perfect time for exploring off-strip. Want geological beauty? Head to rouge-tinted Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area . Street art? Go downtown. Mafia stuff? Don’t miss the Mob Museum  and its in-house distillery.

December: Miami

12.  December: Miami

The Magic City is perhaps not a place you'd associate with art and culture and yet, it frequently hosts works and exhibitions from established international artists. But you don’t have to be an industry insider or even uber-rich to get in on the action: Plenty of fringe events happen outside of the main convention center at Miami Beach at the same time. Check out the public sculpture, and the many pop-ups, gallery events and installations that have led this to be dubbed "Art Week" by locals. In between, hit up South Beach for tanning and our very own Time Out Market Miami for grubbing. Welcome to Miami.

28 Gorgeous Vacation Spots To Choose If You JUST Want To Relax

Top 20 Amazing Places to Explore in April in the USA

I think April is one of the best months to explore the country to find a bit of early sun and shake off those winter blues. Springtime is also one of the most beautiful times to travel, as this is when the weather gets warmer, and flowers are coming into bloom.

Whether you fancy a balmy city break or a hot beach vacation, here are my favorite spots to explore this month…

1. Naples, Florida

Naples, Florida - awesome April breaks

I think this place is just so dreamy! Located along the Gulf of Mexico, Naples is ideally situated to laze on the beach, escape to the Everglades or Ten Thousand Islands wilderness, or watch the Chubb Classic, one of the PGA events this month.

This month’s weather is warming up (around 20 degrees), but it has not hit the extremes of summer. With low rainfall and accommodation rates off-peak, so in my opinion it’s a great time to visit!

In addition to tranquil white beaches and adventures in the adjoining nature preserves, there is excellent shopping and dining.

Naples is easily accessible from Miami along the famous Tamiami Trail. I also love that it’s a quieter and more laid-back place to stay after the craziness of Miami!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1010 Sixth Ave. S. Naples, FL 34102, Phone: (239) 262-7300
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees

My favorite highlights…

  • Going on a kayaking eco-tour and exploring the beautiful coastal mangrove forests.
  • Relaxing on the stunning white sand at Vanderbilt Beach before catching a breathtaking sunset.
  • Visiting the Naples Botanical Gardens home to over 170 acres of preservation land and cultivated gardens.

2. Texas Hill Country

Texas Hill Country Photo

The Texas Hill Country, just west of Austin, with its dramatic limestone and granite hills, is a scenic destination at any time of year.

Still, late March and this month are my personal must-go times, as this is when the area comes alive with carpets of wildflowers, especially Texas’ State flower, the bluebonnet, primroses, and Indian paintbrush.

I recommend exploring the region’s unique food. The food has a strong German heritage and Spanish influences, also seen in the architecture and local music. It’s also a key wine region, with over 80 wineries.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 160 Ingram Hills Rd, Ingram, TX 78025, Phone: +1 830-367-2151
  • Average temperatures – 15 to 26 degrees

My personal highlights…

  • Hiking to the Hamilton Pool and enjoying a picnic by the natural spring pool before taking a dip.
  • Cycling along the Willow City Loop whilst admiring the picturesque countryside and bluebonnet fields.
  • Walking the Texas Wine and Wildflower Trail and enjoying a complimentary tasting!

3. Santa Catalina Island, California

Santa Catalina Island, California

Part of the Channel Islands of California (22 miles off Southern California), I honestly believe this gorgeous spot is one of the best islands to visit in spring.

For starters, there’s the stunning island scenery before the summer crowds arrive, and this time of year has a much more relaxed atmosphere.

The weather averages around 17 degrees in the day, and once there, I would highly recommend just kicking back and waiting for island life to take hold!

It’s a rocky but very scenic island with white sand beaches, palm trees, a cute harbor filled with gently bobbing boats, and jaw-dropping sunsets. There are also plenty of accommodation options.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1 Green Pleasure Pier, Avalon, CA 90704, Phone: +1 310-510-1520
  • Average temperatures – 17 degrees
  • Experiencing the exhilarating Catalina Zip Line Eco Tour which reaches speed of nearly 40 mph at 600 feet above sea level!
  • Exploring the outback on an open-air four-wheel tour to discover remote areas others don’t usually see.
  • Taking part in a Happy Hour Tour where I tasted award-winning appetizers and speciality drinks.

4. Sedona, Arizona

Sedona Arizona - April vacation ideas

As you would expect of a city in Arizona, the climate can be extreme, so this month is an excellent time to visit as temperatures hover around 25 degrees.

Desert flowers bloom, and the hills resound with spring birdsong, making it a special time for hikers and bikers.

The red sandstone rocks of nearby Red Rock State Park pick up the rays of the rising and setting sun and glow as if they were on fire; my Instagram followers loved it!

The legendary Oak Tree Canyon meanders between Sedona and Flagstaff, and I would suggest adding this popular touring and hiking destination to your itinerary!

I personally have a huge fondness for the town as its favorite artist’s location, some of whom conduct workshops.

I suggest visiting some of the many spas and retreats, where you can restore and revive yourself surrounded by the area’s beauty. To me, staying here is always pure bliss!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Sedona Visitor Information Center, 331 Forest Road, Sedona, AZ, 86336, Phone: 928.282.7722
  • Average temperatures – 21 degrees
  • Hiring an ATV and driving across the scenic West Sedona Canyon outback.
  • Catching a stunning sunrise whilst enjoying a hot air balloon ride overlooking the Red Rocks.
  • Strolling Uptown Sedona to explore the shops, boutiques, and Tlaquepaque Arts and Crafts Village.

5. Antelope Valley, California

Antelope Valley, California In America

I’d recommend visiting here for the beautiful California poppies that bloom in spring! Like all wildflowers, it depends on rainfall and temperature, so it isn’t easy to guarantee when they will be displayed.

However, this month is a pretty good bet if you want to see the poppies in Antelope Valley, as they bloom somewhere between March and May .

The state flower is celebrated in a Spring Festival, and in my opinion, the best time to view the miles of brilliant color is mid-morning when the flowers have warmed up and unfolded their petals. I promise you’ll love seeing the colors going on for as long as your eye can see!

I’d also suggest visiting nearby Lancaster City, an interesting place with a rich aviation and space travel history.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 37765 53rd St E, Palmdale, Phone: (661) 361-8254
  • Average temperatures – 23 degrees

My highlights…

  • Walking through the trails of the Poppy Reserve to admire the Instagrammable views of the vibrant wildflowers.
  • Checking out the fun events and rides at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds.
  • I learned about history and appreciated local artists’ works at the Lancaster Museum of Art and History .

6. Nā Pali Coast, Hawaii

Na Pali Coast, Hawaii

Hawaii has only two seasons: summer (or Kau, from May to October) and winter (or Hooilo, from November to this month). At this time of year, there is much to see and do, from watching surfing competitions to exploring the dramatic scenery.

I would recommend the awe-inspiring coastline of Nā Pali in northwest Kauai, with views of dramatic razor-sharp mountains and rocky terrain, except for drivers, for the shore is too rugged to contemplate building a road along it.

For the adventurous, I would highly recommend trying the incredible hiking trails and kayaking tours, while there are catamaran and helicopter trips for those who are not so daring. There are also stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and even archaeological sites!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Kikiaʻola Small Boat Harbor, Kekaha, HI 96752, Phone:  +1 808-635-1131
  • Experiencing the 17 miles of the coast from a different perspective by taking a sailing tour.
  • Enjoying the adventure of a lifetime with a helicopter ride overlooking the dramatic cliff.
  • Hiking along the Kalalau Trail to enjoy breathtaking views of the ocean and greenery.

7. Tidal Basin, Washington DC

Best places to visit in the USA in April/Spring

This is a famously beautiful spring break. Head to the Tidal Basin in Washington DC, and you’ll see the pretty blossom trees, which were a gift from Japan in 1912!

The historic trees signal the beginning of spring and have an average peak bloom date that falls in this month. I highly recommend taking a trip to see them as the trees explode into a wonderful sea of light pink and white blossoms.

Around 70% of the cherry blossom trees’ flowers are open around the 4th, but sometimes the bloom peak occurs as late as the 18th of the month. The bloom lasts around 14 days but is well worth seeing, and I suggest taking your camera!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1501 Maine Ave SW, Washington, Phone (202) 479-2426
  • Average temperatures – 19 degrees
  • Enjoying a bike ride along the stunning loop and array of national monuments.
  • Renting a paddleboat and enjoying some time spent relaxing on the calm water.
  • Spending the day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival and seeing live entertainment amongst the flowers.

8. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Grand Teton National Park Springtime USA

A few miles south Of Yellowstone and part of the Rockies, the Teton Range is a majestic range of mountains separated from the plains of Jackson Hole by a dramatic fault. The Snake River meanders through the range and is fed by several of the lakes in the area.

The skiing season closes towards the end of March/beginning of this month. It is too early for the summer crowds, so in my opinion, it’s an excellent time to visit this beautiful place (I would suggest just wrapping up warmly as it’s still very chilly this month!).

A single visit will not do the Park justice, as there are over 300 km of hiking trails to explore and conquer.

The mountains are vast and awe-inspiring, and I love spotting wildlife here, including large herds of bison and other animals living in this unspoilt wilderness.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address (for post only): Grand Teton National Park, P.O. Box 170, Moose, WY 83012-0170, Phone: 307-739-3300
  • Average temperatures – 8 degrees
  • Taking a scenic drive to Signal Mountain and seeing picturesque panoramic views overlooking the park.
  • Discovering the Hidden Falls and Inspiration Point located on the western side of Jenny Lake.
  • Hiking along the trail from String Lake to Leigh Lake (it’s okay for all ages and ability levels).

9. Bisti Badlands, New Mexico

Bisti Badlands New Mexico

I think these rather forbidding plains, with their bizarre rocky outcrops, are a gem in New Mexico .

The fossils here are impressive, and new dinosaur species are still being unearthed. The “Bisti Beast,” for example, was discovered in 1998, a new tyrannosaurus species.

As recently as 2017, the skull of a Parasaurolophus cyrtocristatus, a strange-looking duck-billed dinosaur, was found, only the second of this species!

I personally think that this month is a good crossover time to visit. Between the rigors of winter and the heat of summer, it is comfortable to hike or wander among the rocks.

Temperatures hover around 19 degrees here, so it’s perfect for long hikes.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 3041 E. Main Street, Farmington, Phone: 800-448-1240
  • Average temperatures – 18 degrees
  • Hiking along the Bisti Badlands Trail and discovering the cool Cracked Eggs rock formations.
  • Capturing an Insta-worthy shot of the unique Alien Throne along the Valley of Dreams Loop.
  • Exploring the short Ah-shi-sle-pah Trail and seeing the dramatic hoodoo views.

10. Palm Springs, California

Palm Springs Spring Break

I love this place for sun and hot weather this month, as temperatures reach 31 degrees. It has always been famous as a retreat for showbiz stars, retirees, and snowbirds escaping cold winters.

There is entertainment, spas, and shopping aplenty, as well as many retro-styled hotels and about 100 golf courses. There are lots of other opportunities, especially for outdoor experiences.

The area is well-provided with hiking trails, but I highly recommend going on a fun Jeep adventure and cultural experiences like the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum .

I would also suggest taking the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which rotates on its short journey to Monte San Jacinto State Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Palm Springs Visitor Information Center, 2901 North Palm Canyon Drive, Palm Springs, CA 92262, Phone: 800-347-7746 | 760-778-8418
  • Average temperatures – 31 degrees
  • Strolling down the city sidewalks to discover the famous Palm Springs Walk of Stars, created in 1992.
  • Checking out the Palm Springs Art Museum, which displays contemporary and modern art and I loved the stunning sculpture garden.
  • Wandering through the Sunnylands and explore 12 acres of beautiful botanic gardens.

11. Port Townsend, Washington

Port Townsend Beach Washington

Located in Jefferson County, around two hours from Seattle , Port Townsend, in my opinion, is a good choice if you’re looking for a relaxed spring break without any crowds.

This month, temperatures average around 14 degrees, so I recommend packing warm clothes before you leave. But it will be worth it!

The city has long trails and beaches, fine restaurants, fantastic art and cultural experiences, and a fascinating maritime history.

I personally loved the Point Wilson Lighthouse , The Jefferson Museum of Art and History , and The Fort Worden State Historical Park .

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2409 Jefferson St, Port Townsend, WA 98368, +1 360-385-2722
  • Average temperatures – 14 degrees
  • Buying fresh, local produce and artisan products from a Farmer’s Market.
  • Indulging in a beer and wine tasting at Port Townsend Vineyards and Port Townsend Brewing.
  • Walking the beautiful čičməhán Trail, where you can find 3-, 6- or 12-mile loops.

12. Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Garden of the Gods Colorado

Located just an hour from Denver , Colorado Springs is home to the Garden of the Gods , a significant attraction with scenic sandstone rocks. This month, the snow may not yet have melted on Pikes Peak, which overlooks the Park, adding more impact to the dramatic scenery.

I recommend stopping at the Visitor and Nature Centre, which includes an interactive museum.

Several trails, about 20 km long, are available, including the Perkins Central Garden Trail, which is accessible for wheelchairs and prams.

You can walk, cycle (or Segway), or even take a Jeep ride (my favourite!), and afterwards, I would suggest refreshing yourself in the cafeteria and just taking in the views.

Dogs are also welcome on leads, and there are even some areas where they can walk off-leash. This is also a popular and challenging spot for rock climbing, but permits are required.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1805 N 30th St, Colorado Springs, CO 80904, +1 719-634-6666
  • Going on a fun segway tour and exploring the Garden.
  • Climbing across the surrounding large carved rocks.
  • Stopping by the hip and healthy Bean Sprouts Cafe for a bite to eat after my adventures.

13. Miami, Florida

Miami - awesome places to go in April

Miami is the world’s playground, with something for everyone, from nature lovers and golfers to compulsive shoppers and nightclubgoers.

It is always hot and humid, but this is a great time to visit because it’s cooler, there is less rainfall, and temperatures can reach around 26 degrees.

I love that its proximity to Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean gives it a tropical and exotic flavor quite different from that of much of the country.

I recommend celebrity spotting around South Beach (or in their hideouts in Coral Gables) and exploring the Everglades or the other preserves, like Big Cypress.

South Beach is also a must-visit for Art Deco fans, and I also suggest visiting quieter beaches such as Bal Harbour or North Beach.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 701 Brickell Ave., Suite 2700, Miami, FL 33131, Phone: (305) 539-3000
  • Average temperatures – 26 degrees
  • Taking a once-in-a-lifetime helicopter ride overlooking the breathtaking Miami skyline.
  • Spending the day at Sunny Isles Beach and enjoy some swimming, diving, and water sports in the cooling waters.
  • Going on a tour of Miami’s most well-known film set locations.

14. Flint Hills, Kansas

Flint Hills, Kansas USA

This is a special place to visit as grasslands are shrinking worldwide, mainly because they provide excellent land for cultivation.

The prairies of North America and the life they support are steadily being restored and protected but have mainly been converted to farmland.

Spring brings warmer weather, rain, and sunshine, so in my opinion, it’s a vibrant and verdant time to visit. Elks are now extinct in the area, but the bison herds are starting to come back.

I highly recommend standing on the slopes and gazing at the grasslands, which have looked exactly like this for thousands of years and are still home to birds and animals that thrive in the prairie!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 315 S 3rd St, Manhattan 66502, Phone: +1 785-587-2726
  • Taking a free bus tour of Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and learning about the culture whilst admiring the gorgeous scenery.
  • Appreciating paintings from famous artists Judith and Ken Mackey Flint Hills Gallery.
  • Enjoying a road trip through the National Scenic Byway, which is 48 miles long and is home to many historical sites and quaint towns.

15. San Diego, California

San Diego Spring Break

I personally think this month is a great time to visit San Diego as it’s much less crowded, there is still plenty of sun, and temperatures hover around 20 degrees.

Most people flock to “Beach City” for family fun on the beaches. Mission Beach is a good swimming beach, with a boardwalk and rollercoaster, but I recommend checking out the tidal pools at La Jolla, when the tide is low, and snorkeling at La Jolla Cove, part of the Underwater Park.

If you’ve had too much sun, I would suggest heading for Balboa Park, where you would need at least a week to explore, taking in the 18 diverse museums or some cultural events. The Air and Space Museum is affiliated with the Smithsonian and has something for kids of all ages.

I would suggest tasting some Baja cuisine, dancing the night away in one of the nightclubs, or viewing one of the many shows on offer.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 996 N Harbor Dr, San Diego, Phone: (619) 236-1242
  • Average temperatures – 20 degrees
  • Having fun at Belmont Park is filled with exciting rides and adrenaline-pumping rollercoasters.
  • Catching one of San Diego’s best sunsets at La Jolla Cove, a perfect spot for Instagrammable shots.
  • Exploring the vibrant nightlife scene at Gaslamp Quarter, filled with bars, lounges, and music venues.

16. Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket Island, Massachusetts

Nantucket was once a thriving whaling center. Even though the population today is only 11,000, it can swell into 50,000 during peak tourist season, so in my opinion, the shoulder months are an excellent time to visit.

Nantucket is reached by ferry from Cape Cod, a 30-mile trip. I suggest visiting this month because it is off-peak, accommodation prices are more affordable, and it is also during the daffodil season.

The flowers are growing everywhere, and the locals go daffodil-crazy for the whole month, which includes car parades, picnics, and daffodil dress-up competitions.

I would recommend visiting the Whaling Museum (although thankfully, most people are against the cruelty of catching whales now!) and walking, cycling, or even catching a bus to view the historic buildings dotted around the island. There are also guided tours.

If you have children with you, there are plenty of family-friendly activities for them, from beaches to boat rides.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: Nantucket Department of Culture & Tourism. 25 Federal Street, Nantucket, MA 02554, Phone: 508-228-0925 Fax: 508-325-5443
  • Average temperatures – 13 degrees
  • Renting a bike and exploring the island’s 35 miles of multi-use paths.
  • Visiting the three historic lighthouses – Sankaty Head Light, Brant Point Light, and Great Point Light.
  • Spending the afternoon shopping downtown, home to many cute boutiques and independent stores.

17. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach spring time vacation

Myrtle Beach is a small but fast-growing city on the South Carolina coast that attracts around 20 million tourists a year. It offers a warm climate and welcoming beaches.

In my opinion, this month is a great time to visit, as it is a bit quieter than March when Ontarians flock to Myrtle Beach to escape their weather.

It is also when the “Coastal Uncorked” festival of food and drink is held, and I would highly recommend timing your visit for then (it’s towards the end of the month).

The resort has 80 golf courses on offer, as well as nightclubs, theatres, and concerts. However, the warmth and the long sandy beaches bring most tourists to Myrtle Beach again and again!

I love the Boardwalk, and it’s one of the best in the country. It’s great for a stroll along the coastline, or if you need a rest, hop on the SkyWheel and view the beaches and the Atlantic Ocean.

There is also a water park and an amusement park for the kids, which is a bonus!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 1200 N Oak St, Myrtle Beach, SC 29577, Phone: +1 843-626-7444
  • Average temperatures – 22 degrees
  • Checking out the Hollywood Wax Museum and posing with some of my favorite A-listers.
  • Enjoying a stroll along the boardwalk that is 1.2 miles long and filled with fun attractions, rides, shops, and restaurants.
  • Going on a thrill-seeking adventure in the five-acre forest treetops at the Radical Ropes Adventure Park.

18. Caddo Lake, Texas and Louisiana

Caddo Lake Louisiana and Texas

This beauty spot is located in Texas and Louisiana; in my opinion, it’s one of the region’s best-kept secrets.

Attracting families, couples, nature lovers, and wildlife watchers, plenty of vacation accommodation rentals exist, including camping spots, cabins, bed and breakfasts, and some nearby hotels.

In Caddo Lake State Park, you can swim hike, picnic, camp, or stay in a cabin, look for a geocache, but I highly recommend boating.

However, be warned—alligators live in the park. Read up on the area’s alligator safety tips before your visit!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 245 Park Road 2, Karnack, Phone: (903) 679-3351
  • Average temperatures – 24 degrees
  • Renting a kayak and exploring the water trails to discover the unique landscape.
  • Taking an early morning boat tour and watching a romantic sunrise or sunset over the lake.
  • Camping overnight at a beautiful shore-side campsite.

19. Blue Ridge Parkway National Park, North Carolina

Blue Ridge Parkway in April

If you are planning a springtime road trip, I suggest that you include this spot—all 755 kilometers of it—on your list, as it takes you through scenic areas of North Carolina and Virginia.

The parkway is closed during winter but opens in spring again. Despite the closure, it has been one of the country’s most-visited parks since 1946.

There are attractions en route, and I recommend stopping at the visitor centre, but in my opinion, what makes the Parkway unique and special is its fantastic biodiversity.

Whether it is the 4000 species of plants, over 250 bird species, or the chance of spotting black bears ambling along, this is a nature watcher’s hotspot!

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 195 Hemphill Knob Rd, Asheville, NC 28803, Phone:+1 828-298-5330
  • Hiking the breathtaking Blue Ridge Parkway Waterfalls via a park trail.
  • Taking a trip to one of the local vineyards and experiencing world-class wine tasting.
  • Visiting the Blue Ridge Music Center, which hosts several music events at its outdoor concert venue.

20. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor in Maine

Although temperatures aren’t the warmest (average temperatures hover around 12 degrees in the day) I personally think there are many reasons to visit Bar Harbour, a town on Mount Desert Island along Maine’s Frenchman Bay in Maine this time of year.

For starters, you’ll get good deals on accommodation as it falls before the summer peak season, and you’ll also arrive before the crowds arrive.

I’m a huge fan of this place. I love that the scenery is quaint and beautiful, with gorgeous coastal beauty. I love the bobbing yachts and boats, the incredible ocean, the neighbouring island views, and the atmospheric weather, which ranges from sparkling sunlight to thick fog and mist.

I think Bar Harbor is a relaxing destination, as well as being the gateway to the mountains and the rugged scenery of nearby Acadia National Park.

  • Visitor’s Centre Address: 2 Cottage St, Bar Harbor, ME 04609, Phone: +1 207-288-5103
  • Average temperatures – 12 degrees

My favourite highlights…

  • Hopping on Oli’s Trolley to explore Bar Harbor with a narrated tour.
  • Grabbing food at Geddy’s on the main street and admiring the view overlooking Frenchman Bay.
  • Discovering the stunning landscape along the coastline via an e-bike rental at Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop.

20 Cool Destinations for When You Just Can't Take the Summer Heat

Escape the dog days with a breezy vacation.

places to visit during vacation

Jordan Siemens/Getty Images

Summer is a time for lounging on the sand, swimming in the surf, and strolling boardwalks with ice cream in hand — unless you're averse to the heat.

For those seeking cooler pastures, these off-the-beaten-path summer vacations, from New Zealand to Greenland, are for seekers of cloudy days and refreshing breezes. Book your travels in one of these destinations to escape the dreaded dog days to come.

Destinations in the U.S.

It's not easy finding a place in the U.S. that's consistently comfortable during summer. Mountainous and coastal destinations are your best bet for cool(er) temperatures.

Denali National Park, Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Alaska is the perfect place for fans of mild summers. Instead of sweating it out, venture north to stunning Denali National Park , where temperatures peak around 66 degrees in July, the warmest month. Visitors can explore the park’s six million acres, drive the scenic Denali Park Road, admire the many snow-capped peaks from viewpoints and hiking trails, and look out for wildlife like moose, caribou, Dall sheep, wolves, and grizzly bears. There are six campgrounds throughout the park where you can pitch a tent in comfortable temperatures.

San Francisco

Alexander Spatari/Getty Images

The fog in San Francisco is so constant that it has a name: Karl. Low-lying clouds over this metropolis block out the sun that keeps nearby cities hot. In July, daily highs are around 70 degrees. Many residents from other parts of the state flock to the Bay Area for refuge from the heat during summer, so you certainly won't be alone as you snap photos of the Golden Gate Bridge, take in the seaside vibes at Fisherman’s Wharf , or dine in the Mission.

North Cascades National Park, Washington

Cavan Images/Getty Images

Washington's North Cascades make a cool getaway from Seattle, about a two-hour drive away. Snow melts from the highest-elevation trails by July, so this is the time when you get the most access to the park. July highs in the North Cascades are around 68 degrees, but the climate depends largely on where you are in the park. According to the National Park Service , the west side is cooler than the east side, where temperatures soar to 90 degrees in the summer. So, if you're looking to avoid the heat, stick to the hiking trails around Mount Baker–Snoqualmie National Forest  and the  Mount Baker Wilderness on those western slopes.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

Anthony Tulliani/EyeEm/Getty Images

New Hampshire's White Mountains comprise stunning alpine peaks cloaked in forest. The higher you go, the cooler it will be. While low elevations see summer temperatures in the mid-70s and sometimes warmer, the high points are perpetually chilly, sometimes not even shedding their layers of snow until well into July. Temperatures on Mount Washington, the tallest peak in the Northeast, range from about 40 to 55 degrees at the height of summer. Visitors can climb out of the heat on the many hiking trails or drive up the slopes on the Kancamagus Highway, one of the most scenic roads in the U.S .

International Destinations

It's much easier to find cool temperatures abroad. Below the equator, the seasons are flipped. So, if you're craving a week or two of pure winter, you can head down to the Southern Hemisphere. And if not, far-north destinations remain mild in the summer.

Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Jarmo Piironen/EyeEm/Getty Images

Summers in this East Coast province are short and pleasantly chilly, with July highs in the capital, St. Johns, rarely exceeding 69 degrees. In the city — Newfoundland and Labrador's largest — visitors can admire the hilltop castle-like structure that is Cabot Tower or enjoy a night out on the entertainment-rich town. Outside the city, you'll find hiking paths galore providing stunning ocean views and a feeling of remoteness. Further up the coast, it's not uncommon to peep icebergs offshore, adding to the cool-weather mood.

Although the sun doesn't actually set from May to July in the "Land of the Midnight Sun," travelers should not be fooled by Norway's long summer days. You might not even break a sweat while out exploring the iconic blue fjords, as summer temperatures in this Scandinavian country hover around the mid-60s in the north and along the coast (the daily high in Tromsø is even lower, topping out at 59 degrees). In addition to taking in stunning natural sites, visitors can head to Oslo for a more metropolitan experience. Its location on the North Sea makes it mild and breezy.

Iceland maintains a pretty nice chill throughout the year, with average July temperatures in the southern part of the country (including the capital, Reykjavík) ranging from 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Cool summer days are good for dipping into Iceland's famous hot springs and hiking to glaciers and misty waterfalls. They're also the best time of year to explore the highlands, which are impassable in the winter. Like Norway, Iceland experiences the midnight sun. With 18 to 24 hours of light per day, you'll have plenty of time to sightsee.

Michela Sieman/Travel + Leisure

Maximum summer temperatures from June through August in Scotland range from a refreshing 59 to 63 degrees, keeping visitors cool as they castle hop, hike in the Highlands, traverse the dramatic coastlines, and search for the tastiest haggis. Like its Scandinavian neighbors to the northeast, Scotland experiences extra-long days in the summer; Visit Scotland notes that the far north of the country gets four more hours of sun per day than London. That gives tourists lots of daylight for seeing Edinburgh's historical sights, day-tripping to Loch Lomond, and exploring the otherworldly Isle of Skye.

South Island, New Zealand

Take a road trip around New Zealand's South Island during the Southern Hemisphere winter for a coat-wearing climate and access to winter sports. The Southern Lakes region — namely Queenstown and Wanaka — is a skier's paradise, and the West Coast is home to glaciers upon glaciers. Meanwhile, on the east coast, Kaikoura offers some of the best whale watching from June to August, when temperatures across the South Island generally range from 53 to 61 degrees.

Falls Creek, Victoria, Australia

Victoria's largest skiable area, Falls Creek Resort reaches only about 33 degrees maximum in July, the peak of Australian winter. It takes a bit of effort to get to — prepare to drive six hours from Melbourne — but you'll get some of Australia's finest powder while those in the Northern Hemisphere bask in the sun. This place is great for families because of the range of activities and constant entertainment. When you aren't skiing, you can go tobogganing, watch the weekly fireworks display, snowshoe, get a massage, or dine out in the picturesque village.

Garzón, Uruguay

Summer trips to the Southern Hemisphere don't have to involve snow. This historic village in Uruguay (deemed a ghost town by some) offers mild 60-degree days in the middle of July, a perfect environment for sampling the cuisine that makes it a top foodie destination. The highlight here is, of course, Restaurante Garzón , founded by Francis Mallmann, the Argentine celebrity chef from Chef's Table . Things to do besides eat include winery hopping and hot-air balloon rides.

Patagonia, Argentina

Patagonia is a popular hiking destination during its peak tourist season, but winter is an ideal time to visit this Argentine wonderland for skiing. July sees average temperatures in the 30s and no shortage of precipitation, to the delight of year-round powder hounds. One of the most popular skiing destinations in Patagonia is Cerro Catedral , just 12 miles from the charming town of Bariloche . On your rest day, take the cable car up Mount Otto for spectacular mountain views.

Easter Island, Chile

High temperatures average in the mid-60s during June, July, and August on Easter Island (aka Rapa Nui), a territory of Chile. While you’re there getting a close look at the island's signature long-faced statues — called moai — you can learn the fascinating history of the Indigenous Rapa Nui people. There are more than 900 moai , which were carved as early as the 10th century to represent the ancestors of Polynesians who came to the island thousands of years ago.

Cape Town summers can bring temperatures above 100 degrees. From June to September, however, the city rarely sees temps above 63, which is comfortable enough to hike Table Mountain to Maclear's Beacon, go whale watching, and see penguins at Boulders Beach (though don't plan on swimming in the water — it's frigid). On days when it's a little too cool to be outside, there are many museums and other indoor attractions to explore, plus countless restaurants contributing to Cape Town's reputation as a culinary capital.

Gautier Houba/Travel + Leisure

With July highs around 72 degrees in the Netherlands' capital city, visitors can comfortably partake in quintessentially Amsterdamian things like pedaling between sights on a city bike and cruising the canals by watercraft. Travelers should note, though, that July is Amsterdam's wettest month. Drizzly days call for museum hopping — don't miss Rijksmuseum , the Van Gogh Museum , and the Anne Frank House — and touring Heineken's oldest brewery .

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France

Carol Yepes/Getty Images

Chamonix is a world-famous winter destination, known for its snow sports and picturesque ski chalets. Don't count it out for a summer getaway, though. The resort area at the base of Mont Blanc offers July highs in the low to mid-60s, ideal for hiking in the Chamonix Valley, enjoying French wine alfresco, and taking the gondola up to the top of Aiguille du Midi , the closest an average Joe can get to Mont Blanc without climbing it.

Tessa Desjardins/Travel + Leisure

Ireland is known for its cloudy, rainy, moody weather, so shoot for the Emerald Isle if you're hoping for a break from the relentless sun. The daily high in Dublin is about 66 degrees during the warmest month (July). This is a great place to grab a pint of Guinness, peruse the gardens at Blarney Castle , and enjoy a picnic at St. Stephen's Green Park . On the opposite coast, dramatic scenery beckons along the famed Cliffs of Moher and on the Aran Islands, a ferry ride from Galway.

Posnov/Getty Images

Get far off the beaten path this summer with a trip to Greenland, only about 50 degrees tops from June to August. This is a nature enthusiast's fantasy vacation — the next best thing to Antarctica, perhaps — brimming with glaciers, bound by rugged coastlines, and home to polar bears and walruses. Of course, this isn't the easiest summer destination to visit. Most will travel there on a cruise, as flying to the island from North America usually means stopping over in Europe.

Paul-Oliver Neumann/EyeEm/Getty Images

Slovenia is often tacked onto trips to Croatia, but this Balkan country holds its own with spectacular mountains and caves that, indeed, keep the region cool in the summer. Imagine castles spilling out of cliffsides and crisp lakes reflecting snow-capped mountains. One of the more famous bodies of water, Lake Bled, contains Slovenia's only natural island, home to a highly photogenic 17th-century church. July's average high temperature in the town of Bled is 74 degrees.

joe daniel price/Getty Images

The mild climate is one of many things to love about Vancouver. Although it provides easy access to the world-renowned Whistler Blackcomb ski resort, its winters are without snow — and just the same, its summers are without sweltering heat. July highs hover in the comfortable 73-degree range. In addition to its year-round sites — Gastown , Stanley Park , and the Vancouver Aquarium — there are also summer festivals to plan your trip around, such as the Celebration of Light at the end of July and the rollicking Vancouver Pride celebrations, which usually take place around the end of July and beginning of August.

I like visiting places, and will be exploring the whole city whilst I am there.

Would people recommend a car hire ? what would experts suggest the best way to trave around Moscow will be?

' class=

take the metro. each station is a site not to be missed. easily navigated. faster than a taxi during rush hour.

' class=

I would suggest map and bicycle if the weather is fine.

Marassa pretty much sums it up.

I've never taken a metered cab either ! However, for gypsy cabs,

one does need to agree the price beforehand - it really helps to speak

some Russian and to have some idea of what prices should be. Gypsy cabs do have the advantage of not taking you for a ride, since the price is agreed in advance.

Dear kiddah_1, You can use not an official cab in city without any risks.

There are some exceptions:

Only a gypsy are present in airports = solution = use only official cab in airports.

I'm loving it ;)

What Alex meant was you have a better chance of getting a fair price if you hail a moving car going more or less your direction rather than come up to those lazy types who prefer to stand still all day waiting for an idiot that would pay triple the going price.

' class=

Thanks so much

> What would a taxi cost approximately

Around 400-500 rubles for someone who can haggle in Russian. Can be very tricky for someone who can't.

> and how long would it take?

From 15 minutes by night to more than an an hour if you hit really bad traffic.

Mastering the metro might turn out easier and less stressful than mastering Moscow taxis and traffic.

Our experience: Taxi driver booked by organization picked us up from DME to hotel for 1450 rubles approximately (we signed voucher). I think 2000 or less on your own probably acceptable.

Fare on a sunday from hotel at the edge of metro ring circling Red Square a couple of times was about 500, but on way back was 1000, and friend said we were lucky to just find one available. You don't flag taxis down in Moscow I guess. We were lucky to have friend to negotiate.

Subway is a very good choice for getting around. Easy to buy ticket at window agent and you scan ticket at tunstile. Don't need to scan to exit. Some stations are phenomenal; one (Revolutionary Stop ?) has all these bronze statues and you feel like you are in the Louvre ;) Statues of ballerinas, hunters, soldiers, other types of workers; rub the nose of a dog/wolf ? for good luck, touch the slipper of the dancer if you aspire to be a ballerina, etc... You can tell these spots where people's hands have polished them to a golden shine. And there is another metro station that has very gilded yellow/white walls, mosaics on ceiling, halls laden with fancy multi tiered chandeliers.

The subway is much deeper than in the US and the escalators go fast ! Do hold on. I do think it would be difficult to maneuver Metro with luggage even with carry on size ones.

Marassa is right about traffic. On a sunday it only took us 10-15 min to get to center, but nearly one hour to get to the International House of Music across the river on weekday at 6 PM. Interesting ways of merging and passing traffic in Moscow. Everyone pushes and gives just before the point of annihilation. The locals themselves describe drivers as "undisciplined" and "not very nice to each other, but that is cultural". End quotes :) Government is easy target to blame (Top officials would have traffic stop while they are out and about and everything is thrown into chaos).

But I really don't think it's any different than traffic jams in Wash DC, Beltway, LA highways. We just line up our cars a bit better. The one thing I see is that Moscow people are their own toughest critics.)

A bit off topic but : We happened to catch a TV show talking about the revival of beloved ? Russian made Lada car . Soviet made, I gather it was not too reliable in years past. Now the jokes go (again from the locals) like this:

What do you call a Lada on top of Sparrow Hill?

What do you call a Lada driver who got a speeding ticket?

How do you double the value of a Lada?

Fill it up with gas.

LOL. We spent the rest of the visit Lada spotting in traffic. Unmistakable boxy little sedan.

http://www.google.com/search?q=lada+ car &hl=en&prmd=imvns&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=dN3GT67wE4Gf-Qa88P2-Cg&ved=0CGwQsAQ&biw=1366&bih=643

places to visit during vacation

A Lada can do 150 kmh or around 100 mph

I know its off topic, but Lada has several models and the newer ones are good and comparable to their better known International counterparts. They are also easy to maintain and seem well suited to Russian roads. (the view of my sales team, who had a do a lot of driving across Russia).

What Joey Fatone Can’t Live Without

places to visit during vacation

If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what everyday stuff famous people add to their carts — like  hair spray  or an  electric toothbrush . We talked to singer, actor, and television host Joey Fatone — who recently partnered with Screwball Whiskey — about the gaming console he travels with, his favorite pink sneakers, and the boxer briefs he can’t live without.

Creed Aventus Cologne

A friend of mine actually suggested I try this. She was like, “Trust me. People will like it.” I smelled it and liked it, so I got myself a bottle. I’m not kidding you: I’ve never gotten many compliments with any other cologne I’ve worn. For some odd reason, when I started wearing Creed, people suddenly started asking me, “Hey what is that? You smell really good.” I bought myself the family-size bottle, which is expensive as hell. However, it lasted me for almost two years. I literally just ran out of it the other day and am about to restock.

Stance Boxer Brief With Wholester

My dad would say to me, “You always have to have clean underwear .” So it’s essential for me. I prefer boxer briefs. Boxers are very loosey loosey. They’re not the greatest. When I’m dancing around on stage, I want things to be in place so I don’t hurt myself. Stance’s boxer briefs are comfortable, and they have this little pouch, which sounds kind of funny even saying it out loud. And they come in lots of different fun designs, sometimes with cartoon characters on them. Because why not? You can still be a kid as an adult, right?

Meta Quest 2

Speaking of being a kid, this is another thing I don’t really leave home without, even when I’m traveling. God forbid there’s nothing around and I can’t get WiFi, but I can watch movies on it, get on social media, and play video games . I play the heck out of Population , which is kind of like Fortnite . I also play Ghostbusters with my buddies. I haven’t played lately, but sometimes three or four of us get on at the same time, and we bust ghosts. I’m huge with VR. I got hooked on it when it first came out and was still called Oculus.

VocalMist Portable Nebulizer

VocalMist is a necessity, especially when I’m traveling for work. It’s been a real game-changer for me on the tour I’ve been doing with AJ from the Backstreet Boys. It’s like a personal mister or humidifier with saline. It’s this itty-bitty thing that comes in a little case. I’ll use it before the show, during breaks, or even sometimes onstage to help open up my vocal cords. It loosens and warms everything up and lubricates my vocal cords.

Nike The Powerpuff Girls x Dunk Low Pro SB QS 'Blossom'

My SBs. Nike, obviously, comes out with great sneakers, and I love them a lot. Lately I’ve been on a kick with the SBs, the Dunks. I love all the colors, but I just keep going back to the pink ones with the orange swoosh on it. They’re dope. They’re comfortable. I love ’em.

Adidas The Simpsons x Adilette Slide J 'Clouds'

More shoes. I’ve been traveling lately, so I needed slippers . People wear Crocs and other brands, but I like these Simpsons Adidas ones. They look like clouds and they’re boxy. And they’re comfortable as hell. It’s like I’m actually walking on clouds. I’m also a huge Simpsons fan. Back in the day, NSYNC did an episode on the show. Funnily enough, Adidas did a whole line of Simpsons sneakers, so I have those ones, too. They’re made to look like the house. The front of the shoe is the rug, the tongue of the shoe has the pink wall and frame of the sailboat, and the back has Santa’s Little Helper and Snowball. I’m a sneakerhead. I can’t help it.

BedJet 3 Climate Control for Beds

I’m not gonna lie. I think I was drunk at one point during the pandemic when I bought this online. When it came in, I was like, Well, is this thing going to work? It is awesome. It’s almost like a little AC unit that cools your bed. You can even travel with it. I mean, you would need a bigger suitcase , but it’s doable. It goes in between the sheets, so it kind of puffs up when you’re lying in bed. The cool thing is that it has a dual sheet, so if your spouse or whoever you’re sleeping next to you wants to be warm and you want it cold, it can adjust the airflow and temperature on each side. It’s a game-changer, especially if you’re a hot person or you heat up like I do. Dropping it down to a cold temp feels amazing.

Walt Disney World Annual Pass

I am a dork with these theme parks. I can’t help it. A friend of mine actually is a Club 33 member, so he hooked me up with an annual pass for my daughter. And then we love Universal, too. We live in Orlando, Florida, so we can’t live without those passes. For instance, if we want to go somewhere when my kid’s done with school or something, we just take a break and walk around the park. We don’t have to necessarily even go on the rides; it’s just to go out. It’s right in my backyard, so I never leave home without these.

Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey

I’m not a huge whiskey person to be completely honest. But, I’m a huge peanut-butter fan. With this, you can’t really taste that it’s whiskey. Screwball came up with this idea to do a take on a Moscow mule called a “PB&G” for the Kentucky Derby. The drink’s the Screwball peanut-butter whiskey with ginger beer, pomegranate juice, and lime juice. At first, I was like, I don’t know about that . But holy crap, it’s fricking amazing.

These Are The Areas Of Rome I Avoided During My Bucket List Vacation

When traveling, you want your money to stretch as far as possible. Avoiding these certain areas can help you to accomplish that.

  • Avoid tourist areas in Rome for cheaper prices on food and souvenirs to make your money last longer.
  • Less traveled paths in Rome offer better prices and experiences, providing an authentic glimpse into local life.
  • Translation apps can ease language barriers in lesser-known parts of Rome, allowing for richer cultural experiences.

As is the case in most cities, some areas should be avoided. Whether for reasons due to crime, pedestrian access, or the cost, it seems commonplace to consider such things. Rome is no exception to this, although for most tourists the primary reason is due to higher costs and doesn't require one to completely avoid the area altogether. As it is, vacations to Italy come with a steep price in general, and avoiding places that will deplete your funds more quickly should be done if you can.

When I was in the throes of a vacation to Rome, I made note of the areas that came with an elevated price tag and made an effort to avoid purchases around those places. Instead, I chose to expend funds at smaller restaurants and establishments that were just a bit removed from the high-traffic areas. I also got creative to find some hidden gem options around Rome . Here is what I learned along the way.

Visit These 12 Underrated Places In Italy This Summer

The tourist areas have elevated prices, whether it's souvenirs or food, the high-traffic spots will cost more.

As we all know, there are a lot of tourist locations within Rome. Between the Spanish Steps , the Coliseum, Trevi Fountain, and all the others within the city limits, it might seem like finding accommodations outside tourist destinations is impossible. However, that's not the case.

The city of Rome has almost 400 traversible roads , meaning they are built and maintained in the customary Roman fashion. Therefore, finding a restaurant or hotel that offers more reasonable rates is more than feasible if you're traveling by car.

Another fun way to explore the city is by finding alternate paths to take in the best landmarks . Most places offer free or reduced admission price days (including the Vatican ), or alternative entrances that give you the same iconic views without the crazy crowds. Getting creative allows you to enjoy the same experiences but without paying more out of pocket.

Restaurants Will Often Upsell Without Revealing the Cost

A personal experience at a touristy restaurant puts a bad taste in our mouths.

My travel companion and I initially learned to avoid meals and souvenirs in tourist locations after an unfortunate event occurred at a restaurant near to the Coliseum . After our tour, we wanted to slide into a comfortable seat and enjoy a good meal.

We saw a menu outdoors that offered steak and an assortment of pasta dishes just a few minutes away from where our tour group let out. At the time, we thought it was a good option.

Unfortunately, we were wrong.

Being that the restaurant didn't offer a children's menu, we inquired about upping the steak size in one of the entrées just a little bit so that one of our smaller travelers could share. Our waiter, who spoke perfect English, said that another menu option would fulfill that need and confirmed that it was just "a little bit bigger."

What we later found out is that he put in an order for something called "The Tomahawk" and it was over double the price of the entrée we had inquired about, costing nearly 100 Euros!

We acknowledge that we should have asked for the price ahead of time, as that isn't something we did when ordering. However, we didn't run into this issue at the other restaurants we selected that were a bit removed from popular attractions.

10 Scenic Road Trips In Italy And Their Best Stops

Traveling a few streets out will net better prices and experience, taking the less traveled path applies to rome as well.

Outside the issue with the touristy restaurant, we noticed a trend of souvenirs, desserts, and drinks being consistently higher in price in areas that saw a lot of foot traffic. As we found out, your hotel or Airbnb can still be in proximity of incredible sights like the Coliseum, but when you expand your search by just a few blocks, the cost will decrease considerably.

We started walking just a few streets more when starting our search for food, drinks, or souvenirs and were blown away by the difference. We also talked to one of our tour guides about it and she confirmed our findings. She told us that when she visits family she always secures small gifts and souvenirs to take back from shops that are two to three blocks from the main attractions.

Many have concerns over possible language barriers as you leave the city center and go into parts of Rome that are less frequented. However, with the use of translation programs like Google Translate , those fears are quickly becoming a thing of the past.

Not only can you save money by visiting new areas of the city, but you can learn more about the lives of locals and how they operate by going a bit out of your comfort zone.

Man dies after setting himself on fire near Trump trial courthouse in NYC

By Graham Kates , Pat Milton , Jericka Duncan

Updated on: April 20, 2024 / 8:38 PM EDT / CBS News

A man who set himself on fire outside the New York City courthouse where former President Donald Trump's hush money trial is underway has died, police said.

Witnesses said that they saw the man — identified by the New York Police Department as 37-year-old Max Azzarello — pour liquid over his head and set himself on fire at 1:39 p.m. local time on Friday.

In a briefing immediately after the incident, the NYPD said Azzarello, a Florida resident who had arrived in New York City earlier in the week, walked into Collect Pond Park, opened a book bag, and scattered papers and pamphlets on the ground before setting himself ablaze. Police described the materials as "like a conspiracy-theory type of pamphlet."

Azzarello then fell on a police barrier. Civilians and court officers used coats and extinguishers to try to put out the fire, the NYPD said, and the New York City Fire Department responded, finally extinguishing the fire.

A police officer uses a fire extinguisher as emergency personnel respond to a fire outside the courthouse where former President Donald Trump's "hush money" trial is underway in New York, April 19, 2024.

The FDNY said that Azzarello was transported to New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center, which has a burn center, in critical condition.

The NYPD confirmed to CBS News overnight that Azzarello had died on Friday night.

Four officers who responded to the fire suffered minor injuries.

Azzarello had posted a statement on social media, officials said. Although the incident took place close to the court where Trump's trial is taking place, officials said Azzarello did not appear to be targeting any particular person or group and added that he seemed to be a conspiracy theorist.

One witness described pamphlets that Azzarello threw, apparently while making allegations about New York University.

"I heard this clattering, and it was those papers that he had flung up in the air," the witness said. "That caught our attention and — caught my attention, anyway ... then he pulled out a can and he poured it over himself. And at that point, I thought, 'Oh ... this is gonna be awful."

"It happened so fast — what do you do?" another witness said.
