Travel + Leisure Readers' 15 Favorite Tour Operators of 2023
The right tour operators can make or break a trip. These specialists came out on top in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023 thanks to insider knowledge and personalized service.
How Voting Works
What readers loved, the full list.
Courtesy of Butterfield & Robinson
While we travel to see the sights, what we really take home with us are the experiences. And finding the right tour operator — one that’s able to meld insider knowledge about a destination with the best ways to take it in — can make or break a trip. But when the right combination does come along, it can be pure magic, so it’s no wonder that the last year has seen group travel on the rise .
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).
Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:
- Staff/guides
- Itineraries/destinations
- Accommodations
For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.
With nine of the companies returning from last year’s list , one major trend that stands out is the focus on a region, like with this year’s No. 1 pick, ATJ, which focuses on luxury travel, ranging from bespoke private to small group itineraries, in Austrasia. Also destination experts are InsideJapan Tours (No. 10), who offer themed trips, from honeymoons to diving, around the island nation, and Vagabond Tours of Ireland (No. 12), which makes its debut on the list, standing out for its B Corporation status, as it guides travelers around the Emerald Isle in their choice of style, either relaxed and culture-focused or active and adventurous.
Also notable are the operators who go a step beyond, like two returning favorites: Artisans of Leisure (returning as No. 3) has been called “top notch”; one reader said that “no other tour operator comes close in terms of knowing the destinations [and] understanding what we want and executing our trip flawlessly.” Black Tomato (dropping from last year’s No. 4 to a still respectable No. 6) manages to both fulfill curiosity and allay FOMO on its adventures globally.
But more than anything, it’s loyalty that shows what a strong tour operator is made of, and readers often raved about return visits with a particular company. One, for instance, shared that after 25 journeys, DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 2) stands out among them all. “The best cycling trips I’ve been on,” they said. “Great staff, accommodations, and first class all the way.” And that’s the winning combo for a tour company — leaving travelers with that passion for exploring the world through their eyes. See the complete list of top 15 tour operators, according to T+L readers, below.
Courtesy of ATJ
Formerly known as Asia Transpacific Journeys, ATJ made the list in 2011, 2017, and 2018, and it now leapfrogs back in triumphantly, notching the No. 1 spot. Offering tours in countries like Australia, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the company specializes in custom itineraries and private group trips. But what travelers rave about is its band of extremely helpful customer service reps who are “responsive and personable.” They added, “I can call and speak with a live person immediately.” Customers tend to be loyal, but so are the agents: “I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.”

Premier League US tour: Schedule plus TV and ticket details
by Kyle Fansler April 13, 2023
The Premier League has announced a major summer tour involving six clubs across five cities. In total, there will be nine matches between Premier League teams in the United States in 2023 as part of this summer tour. Note that this does not include Arsenal or Manchester United , who both have individual summer friendlies planned in the United States this year.
The six clubs making the collective trip across the pond are Aston Villa, Brentford, Brighton, Chelsea, Fulham and Newcastle. Each team is playing three games in the United States as part of this summer series across five venues. Games are in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Orlando, Harrison and Landover. The latter two are just outside of New York and Washington, DC, respectively.
This is the first time the Premier League is making a collective league effort to play a preseason tournament in the United States. In the past, teams traveled individually, but still played Premier League teams often. For example, the Florida Cup last year pit Arsenal against Chelsea .
Premier League US tour schedule
These games take place over a nine-day span from Saturday, July 22 to Sunday, July 30. The action starts in Philadelphia at Lincoln Financial Field, with a total of three games over that weekend. Chelsea plays against Brighton on Saturday before Fulham plays Brentford and Newcastle takes on Aston Villa.
Then, on Wednesday July 26, there are three games. Two are in Atlanta, which are Brentford-Brighton and Chelsea vs Newcastle. The third game is in Orlando as Fulham faces Aston Villa.
The last set of games start Friday, July 28 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, NJ. Brighton and Newcastle conclude their USA ventures at the home of the New York Red Bulls. Then, on Sunday, July 30, there are two games at FedEx field in Landover, MD. Aston Villa battles Brentford before London clubs Chelsea and Fulham play.
How to watch
In addition to announcing the schedule, the Premier League also clarified that NBC is in charge of broadcasting the games. NBCUniversal’s family of channels, including USA Network as well as Peacock , have coverage of games throughout the preseason tournament.
You can also start to think about tickets to watch these games in the United States. Pre-sale tickets open on Tuesday, April 25. One day later, general sale tickets go on sale.
As soon as more ticket details are announced, we’ll share them in this article.

However, picking the wrong group tour company is the quickest way to ruin your trip. Make sure you choose a tour company that aligns with your goals and travel styles. Do you want an intimate group tour or do you prefer to make lots of new friends in a big group? Does the price line up with what you like (luxury vs. budget)? Is the itinerary going to all the places you want to see?
We’ve done the research and found the very best group travel tour companies for 2024 for every type of traveler.

Dublin's attractions are as diverse as they are plentiful: from the 11th-century Christ Church Cathedral to the Leprechaun Museum, this city has a wide selection to offer. The plethora of literary pubs have earned its status as one of just five UNESCO Cities of Literature on the planet. You can raise a pint to writers like James Joyce and Bram Stoker, or explore the life and works of poet WB Yeats at the National Library.
Day 4 Sunday June 11th
CLIFFS OF MOHER
After breakfast, meet our guide to begin our tour of the Wild Atlantic Way. Today we’re aiming for Galway. The City of the Tribes nestles on the Atlantic Ocean and makes for an atmospheric and buzzy urban experience. Expect live music performances on the streets, diverse shops and tasty food options. Spot black-hulled, red-sailed Hooker boats and picturesque Dunguaire Castle in the village of Kinvara, on Galway Bay. Next is the bewitching beauty of the Burren region, with its limestone landscape, and uniquely rich flora. Marvel at the Poulnabrone Dolmen, one of Ireland’s great archaeological treasures. It’s older than the pyramids! Our last stop today is the world famous Cliffs of Moher - hold on to your hat! These majestic 700ft high sea cliffs have the power to dazzle.
Overnight: Armada Hotel, Spanish Point, Clare
Day 5 Monday June 12th
CASTLE STAY & SHEEP FARM
After breakfast we continue along the south exploring Clare and Kerry. Start your day with two optional tour options: 1) guided boat trip and tour of historic Scattery Island or 2) enjoy a scenic tour through the spectacular Loop Head peninsula. Then it's off to Kerry! Take a ferry across the mouth of the Shannon – the longest river in Ireland. Keep an eye out for dolphins as we arrive in "The Kingdom" of Kerry. After moving onward from Tralee, Kerry’s largest town and home to the famous Rose of Tralee Festival (along with a beautiful rose garden), meet some local residents: sheep! Visit a working Irish sheep farm with charming old-style cottages for a live sheepdog demo and a guided farm tour. Tonight, feel like royalty at Ballyseede Castle tonight.
Overnight: Ballyseede Castle Hotel, Ballyseede, Kerry
Day 6 Tuesday June 13th
RING OF KERRY & SKELLIG ISLANDS
Today is your chance to experience the Ring of Kerry on the Iveragh peninsula and Ireland’s island treasures; the Skelligs. Take an optional guided boat trip around both Skellig Islands to experience seabirds and amazing history or remain on dry land visiting the Skellig Experience to learn all about Ireland's unique island treasures. There’s time for an optional visit to Derrynane, historic home to Daniel O’Connell. Afterwards ramble through dunes of golden sands on Derrynane beach or hunt for fairies in local woodland. We’ll hit Kenmare in the early evening. Catch an authentic performance of traditional Irish music and outstanding local food in this lively town’s many pubs and restaurants.
Overnight: Coachman’s Townhouse, Kenmare, Kerry
Day 7 Wednesday June 14th
KILLARNEY NATIONAL PARK
Wander the winding streets of colorful Kenmare this morning, with free time to drift between cafés, art galleries and craft shops. Pass over one of Ireland's most scenic roads at Moll's Gap . Gaze down at the beautiful lakes of Killarney from Ladies View, so-named for the time Queen Victoria's ladies-in-waiting stopped here to grab a selfie in 1861. Pay a visit to the stunning Killarney National Park where you can take an optional horse-drawn carriage ride . Your experience in Killarney National Park may include: sightings of rare red deer herds in native oak forest, 19th century Muckross House and gardens, a short walk to scenic Torc Waterfall, and idyllic lakeside and mountain views
Overnight: Gougane Barra Hotel or West Cork Hotel, Skibbereen, Cork
Day 8 Thursday June 15th
HISTORIC HOUSE TOUR & ANCIENT MONUMENTS
Visit stately Bantry House, one of the few grand Irish homes still in private hands; owned by the same family since the 18th century. Next, imagine mysterious Celtic rituals at Drombeg Stone Circle. No one truly knows what these circles were for - Astrology? Sacrifice ? Aliens? Dancing? Let your imagination run wild! Then, it's back to the coast we go (seafood fans rejoice!), to explore the picture perfect town of Kinsale. Step back in time to relive bloody battles of the past with a self-guided tour of the dramatic star-shaped Charles Fort , located at the edge of the ocean near Kinsale. Enjoy a local menu of vibrant restaurants, atmospheric pubs and abundant craft shops in the unofficial gourmet capital of Ireland .
Overnight: Actons Hotel, Kinsale, Cork
Day 9 Friday June 16th
FREE DAY IN IRELAND’S GOURMET PARADISE, KINSALE Today is yours to design. Relax with quality downtime to recharge and soak up Kinsale’s charms. Stroll around the town’s winding streets, browsing art galleries and craft shops, or engage in some delicious cultural activities. For example, embark on an optional walking food tour of Kinsale visiting four different restaurants with exclusive tasting of locally sourced dishes. Whiskey enthusiasts can experience a guided tasting in an authentic Irish pub - the 18th century Folk House Venue. Whatever shenanigans you get up to in Kinsale, don’t miss a traditional music session, normally performed live in pubs.
Day 10 Saturday June 17th
KISS THE BLARNEY STONE
It’s time to — hygienically — kiss the famous Blarney Stone to gain the gift o’ the gab. Afterwards, explore the lush, landscaped gardens of Blarney Castle. Then visit Cahir Castle, one of Ireland’s largest medieval fortresses . The castle has served as a Hollywood film set with stars such as Richard Burton, Liam Neeson, Dev Patel and Matt Damon gracing it over the years. Tour the banqueting hall and try to spot a 400 year old cannonball lodged in the walls. This evening we return to Dublin between 5-6pm. Overnight: Grand Canal Hotel or Similar
Day 11 Sunday June 9th
Today make your way to the airport for your flight home. Not ready to leave? Extend your stay in Ireland (or continue your journey onwards - Scotland, England, and Iceland are easy to reach)!

Leave the bustle of the big city behind and head offshore to Waiheke Island, famed for its sandy beaches and local wine. Board a ferry from Auckland – if you’re lucky, you may even see dolphins or orcas along the way. The day will be spent sipping your way around the island, stopping off at three unique wineries to learn about their production methods, and of course tasting the goods yourself. You’ll also enjoy an included lunch on the island, not to mention a few scenic drives with plenty of opportunities for photos. Return to Auckland in the late afternoon with an evening free for your own discoveries of the city.

After breakfast this morning, hit the road and drive to the Waitomo Glow Worm Caves – an extensive underground network of tunnels and caverns decorated with stalactites, stalagmites and luminous glow worms. Join a local expert for an in-depth tour of the Ruakuri Cave, descending a spiral entrance to the world below. See the limestone formations, hear the roar of subterranean waterfalls and learn about the glow worms that light up the caves. Continue to Hobbiton, where the epic Lord of the Rings movies were shot. Take a tour around the set with a local guide, hear stories about the production of these iconic films, explore Hobbit holes and enjoy a drink (and maybe a delicious pie) at the mythical Green Dragon Inn. Finally, travel to Rotorua, where you’ll spend the evening.

Wake up in Rotorua to the unmistakable scent of sulphur coming off the town’s many geothermal pools. After breakfast, visit to Te Puia – over 70 hectares of land within the Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley is dotted with hot springs, mud pools and geysers. A local expert will take you on a walk to learn about these geothermal wonders, including Pohutu – the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere. Next, head to the Kiwi Conservation Centre where you’ll have the chance to observe the beloved nocturnal bird (the kiwi) in a darkened enclosure and learn about the sanctuary’s efforts to protect them. Swing by the Ahua Gallery and watch culturally significant Maori carving and weaving demonstrations. Lunch today will be a traditional hangi feast cooked beneath the earth in the traditional style. Tonight, consider an optional tour of the geysers by night.

On the way, visit Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, where you’ll walk through thousands of years of geothermal history and volcanic features, including New Zealand's largest mud pool and bubbling basins bursting with vibrant colours. The rest of the day is yours to discover all that this picturesque part of the country has to offer. Air France renames “Premium Economy” to “Premium” to reflect upmarket offerings
Air france renames its premium economy cabin.
To emphasize its upscale amenities, Air France will rename “Premium Economy” seating to “Premium”. The name change demonstrates the carrier’s luxurious yet affordable cabin option, which offers a curated experience, from comfy seats to Michelin-starred menus .
Air France Premium: Enjoy the best of France at 35,000 feet
Air France’s renewed Premium cabins offer a high-end experience all around. Whether sampling French wine, enjoying a Michelin-starred recipe, or viewing a 4K resolution screen, passengers can unwind and enjoy in the sky.
On select Boeing 777 and Airbus A350 aircraft, the Premium Cabin offers a new seat that reclines up to 124 degrees, with a wider base for enhanced comfort. A new herringbone fabric improves softness. By the end of 2025, nearly 80% of the airline’s planes will have recliner seats.
- Emirates adds Boeing 777s with premium economy on six US routes
- United Airlines offers Mileage Plus members free copies of its last print magazine
- Breeze Airways offers 50% off roundtrip flights through Thursday
Every seat has a 13.3-inch 4K-quality Ultra HD touchscreen, with more than 1,500 hours of on-demand entertainment, emphasizing French offerings. Passengers can connect to the screen via Bluetooth and use their devices as a remote control or browse the catalog. USB ports allow a quick charge-up and available WiFi ensures a reliable connection.
The surroundings have a refreshed appearance, including new shades of Air France’s signature color, navy blue, and sky blue, which is unique to the Premium cabin. Additionally, red accents highlight the cushions, blankets, headrests, and more.
France has a reputation for fine cuisine, and Air France brings that to the skies. Upon boarding, travelers receive a glass of champagne (depending on flight schedule), and full meal service designed by the country’s best chefs.
The “French-style” meal service includes snacks, a starter, an option of two hot dishes, dessert and cheese, all served with stainless steel utensils on eco-friendly tableware. For the menu, Air France turned to Michelin-starred Chef Frédéric Simonin. Since November 2023, he’s been designing meals for the airline, and regularly updates the recipes.
Passengers can pick from delicious chicken with prune sauce, peas, red onion compote and asparagus tips, or try Trofie pasta bake with porcini mushrooms and asparagus (available on flights from Paris, Pointe à Pitre, Fort de France, Cayenne and Réunion).
To bring his recipes to the air, Frédéric Simonin worked with renowned in-flight catering service Servair. The menu uses local, fresh, and seasonal produce, along with 100% French meat, milk products, eggs, and poultry. Seafood comes from sustainable fisheries.
For dessert, options include crunchy vanilla puffs, Paris-Brest and chocolate fondant. Those on flights over nine hours enjoy ice cream between meals, with two flavors available: vanilla or milk chocolate with caramelized almonds. The ice cream bars are traditionally made in southern France.
There’s also a wide selection of beverages, whether hot or cold or with or without alcohol. A new menu of French wines and beers are on offer, besides champagne. In spring 2025, Air France’s Head Sommelier, Xavier Thuizat, will debut a redesigned French wine, spirits, and champagne list.

What if we told you that you could enjoy the benefits of private air travel without the hefty price tag? Welcome to the world of JSX, a game-changer in the aviation industry that offers a semi-private flying experience. This innovative air carrier bridges the gap between commercial and private travel, providing passengers with the luxury and convenience of private jets at a fraction of the cost. Let’s dive into the details of JSX, its impact on major commercial airlines, and whether this unique travel option is truly worth considering. JSX: the details
JSX, also known as JetSuite X, Inc., is an American air carrier operating in the United States and Mexico. Describing itself as a “hop-on jet service,” JSX offers convenience that rivals traditional commercial flights. Operating as a public charter, JSX doesn’t directly operate aircraft but instead charters 30-seat Embraer regional jets, which are managed by a subsidiary. These jets are customized with 30 business-class seats, providing extra legroom, in-row power, and a streamlined, overhead-bin-free design.
Sometimes, you just want to get where you’re going, without any frills or upgrades. That can mean the lowest fare, no extra amenities, and barely any luggage. For that type of no-frills traveler, United offers its Basic Economy seats. Offering the lowest price, no cancellation, and no checked or carry-on luggage (aside from a personal item), it’s a frugal, spartan option.
Despite that, United announced a change that makes life easier for Basic Economy passengers. Here’s what to know. United now offers online check-in for Basic Economy passengers
For the past 50 years, Southwest Airlines used an open-seating model, where passengers picked seats on a first-come, first-served basis. Today, the carrier announced that’s set to change, as it plans to introduce assigned seats and premium seating options. The announcement coincided with disappointing second-quarter profits, which dropped 46% from a year prior. Southwest Airlines changes course based on customer research
Before making the change, Southwest conducted consumer research, which showed a strong preference for assigned seats. Additionally, the new policy should strengthen revenue and improve financial results.

A Snob's Guide to Traveling Into Canada's Snowy Wilds

Photo above: An aurora-viewing yurt in the Yukon (snowshoes required). Marc Telio's guides will take you there.
Henry David Thoreau extolled the transcendent pleasures of a cabin in the woods in Concord, Massachusetts. But in Canada, he quipped, all he got “was a cold.” Marc Telio of Entrée Destinations specializes in helping travelers comfortably access his country’s most beautiful and remote places. “Think cabins in falling snow, snowshoes, dogsleds, snowmobiles, and roaring fires. It’s gorgeous.”
Included in his itineraries: Wander the Resort in Ontario, two hours east of Toronto, has 10 two-bedroom cabins, a five-bedroom house, and a new 10,000-square-foot Nordic spa among the pines. Of the cabins sprinkled across the 700 acres of Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge , in Alberta, the one to book is Outlook, which offers room service and has had royal occupants (Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip). A private plane delivers you to the log cabins of Yukon’s Southern Lakes Resort to ice-fish and dogsled by day and view the aurora borealis by night. To reach Blachford Lake Lodge in the Northwest Territories (which extend all the way to the Arctic Ocean), Telio will organize a skiplane; you can fat-tire-bike, snowmobile, and stargaze from a rooftop hot tub in one of the least populated places on the planet.
