How to book refundable cruise

I’ve been cruising for 10+ years....I understand others are in the “know” about this, but I’ve never encountered it or know how to handle it.

Every cruise I’ve booked online direct with the cruise line. I prefer to do it myself.

I’ve never even encountered a non refundable deposit situation before, just the standard dates

Anything I’ve tried to book now says you lose your $530.00 deposit even if you cancel 6 months in advance, or 2 days later even.

I have been unable to find a way to even see the prices of cruises that don’t force you to lose your deposit.

Can anyone guide me? I thought I knew my stuff but this is all new and different to me.

Thanks in advance.

You have to go all the way to the booking page after you’ve entered the names of all passengers and then it will give you the option to check a box where you can choose the refundable option. It’s annoying.

AND if booking a Grand suite or higher they are all non refundable as well as guarantee staterooms although there have been reports that sometimes they can be refundable but you still have to go all the way thru the booking process to find out.  Very annoying like stated above

Under US (and I believe Canada) rules, "non-refundable" really isn't.  If you cancel or change to a different ship or sailing before the final payment date you will be charged $100 fee per person and the rest goes back to you as a future cruise deposit that must be booked within a year.

Correct that Canadian policy is the same as the US.

Deposits are sometimes entirely non refundable as on a 5 day or less sailing where the deposit is $100 per person you do indeed lose the entire deposit.  IMO the non refundable (penalty portion) of the deposit should have been set at 50% of the deposit amount so that sailings of all lengths and cabin types were treated equally

I have booked a refundable cruise onboard.... a month later I changed the cruise date... did not lose anything... simply changed the ship and dates.... Now I did changed it to NR since my total deposit was only $200.  When I sat down with the next cruise people... we discussed several options... NR vs refundable and with and without perks to find what worked best.

I wish that Celebrity would develop a matrix with various options for different cabin categories... so that you could tailor your cruise to your needs... and budget. Their current system leaves too many mysteries.... One which bugs me is that when doing a mock booking they don't show the port fees in their subtotal... forcing me to write them down from an earlier screen. They seem to think the price they charge is the cost of the cruise and the rest is ... well not worth noting. Now for some itineraries these fees and low but others it gets up there and may influence someone's choices... but it requires diligence on the part of the cruiser to get a handle on costs.

If you booked refundable, of course you can change things.  It's the nonrefundable that has restrictions.

We just had to change dates on a B2B cruise, and we were charged the $400 ($100 per person, per cruise) - but the next day we were informed that the entire $400 was going toward the new cruise!  I don't know if that's normal or if the travel agent worked some magic, but it was quite unexpected.

I am booked for a group cruise next fall, and we were given refundable and non-refundable prices; the non-refundable were more expensive than losing the down payment.

Not normal - look for your cruise rate to be $400 higher after 2-3 days or when the computer system catches up.

Radiance of the Seas Facing Propulsion Issues

  • April 24, 2024

Radiance of the Seas

Royal Caribbean International’s Radiance of the Seas is currently facing propulsion issues. As a result, the 2001-built vessel will be unable to visit some of the scheduled ports of call during its current sailing.

“The Radiance of the Seas is experiencing a technical issue with one of its propulsion systems, resulting in a slower maximum speed,” Royal Caribbean said in a statement sent to guests onboard.

“Unfortunately, this means we’re no longer able to make our scheduled calls. We’re sorry for the inconvenience caused by this unexpected situation,” the company added, noting that while the ship is sailing at a slower speed, it remains seaworthy and safe.

After sailing from Los Angeles on April 22, 2024, the ship is offering a repositioning cruise to Vancouver, in Canada’s British Columbia. The four-night sailing included visits to Astoria and Victoria.

Due to the propulsion issues, the Radiance of the Seas is now sailing directly to Vancouver, where it’s scheduled to arrive on the evening of April 25, 2024.

“Our departure process will remain as scheduled on Friday, April 26, so there’s no need to reschedule your onward travel,” Royal Caribbean stated, adding that the early arrival is necessary to complete required maintenance onboard.

“Our teams are hard at work to correct this issue and our current progress is meeting our timeline. However, we’ll need to be docked to complete the required repairs,” the company said.

“At this time, we intend to sail as planned on April 26, 2024, and we are committed to keeping you informed every step of the way,” Royal Caribbean added, mentioning guests sailing back-to-back.

Passengers currently onboard will be compensated for the last-minute change with a refund of 50 percent of the cruise fare paid in the form of an onboard credit, the company said in the statement.

Any pre-paid shore excursion booked for Astoria and Victoria is also being refunded as an onboard credit, Royal Caribbean added.

“All these credits can be used anywhere onboard, and any remaining, refundable amounts at the end of the sailing will be reimbursed to the credit cards on file,” the company explained.

The Radiance of the Seas saw cruises canceled in 2023 due to propulsion issues. At the time, the vessel remained out of service for two weeks while repairs were carried out .

Why is Royal Caribbean Canceling Cruise Stops to Popular Private Island?

R oyal Caribbean has canceled stops to its popular private island, Labadee, in Haiti. This decision was made due to the country’s major violence and instability.

Royal Caribbean’s Labadee

Labadee is a beautiful resort on the northern coast of Haiti. It has stunning white sand beaches, a 2600-foot zip line over the water, and an aqua park. It has been a popular stop for Royal Caribbean cruise ships for years, but the recent surge in violence in Haiti has made it unsafe for visitors.

Haiti is on the Do Not Travel List

Haiti currently has the highest travel advisory of Level 4 – Do Not Travel. The US Department of State has advised Americans not to travel to Haiti due to the high risk of kidnapping, crime, civil unrest, and poor healthcare infrastructure. The situation has become so dangerous that non-emergency US government personnel and their families have been asked to leave Haiti immediately.

Kidnapping is a common and widespread occurrence in Haiti, with US citizens often among the victims. Violent crime is also prevalent, with travelers frequently followed and attacked shortly after leaving the Port-au-Prince airport.

When the US Department of State first made Haiti a Level 4 – Do Not Travel destination in July 2023, Royal Caribbean continued to maintain its regular cruise itinerary, making stops at its private island, Labadee. This was because the island is remote, located 130 miles from Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, and is only accessible to Royal Caribbean cruise passengers and staff.

However, with the recent escalation of violence in Haiti, Royal Caribbean has decided to cancel all stops in Labadee temporarily. The company is rerouting many Caribbean cruises that originally had Labadee as a port of call to other cruise ports, such as Perfect Day at CocoCay, another Royal Caribbean private island.

For now, the cancellation is for April and May cruises. Royal Caribbean will continue monitoring the situation in Haiti to ensure the safety and security of its passengers and staff. Check out the most dangerous cruise ports in the world .

RCI-Royal Caribbean cancels May cruises to Haiti amid escalating security concerns

CruiseMapper logo

Amid escalating security concerns in Haiti, RCI-Royal Caribbean has extended its cancellation of all scheduled cruises to Labadee Haiti throughout the entire May.

This decision comes as a response to the persistent political instability and violence plaguing Haiti.

Gang-related incidents have been on the rise, prompting warnings from the US State Department advising against travel to certain areas of Haiti since July 2023. The situation worsened in late February following political tensions surrounding Prime Minister Ariel Henry's diplomatic trip to Kenya. Despite efforts to establish a transitional presidential council, delays have hindered its formation.

With airports closing and flights being disrupted, Royal Caribbean has taken proactive measures to ensure the safety of its guests and crew. Labadee, although leased by Royal Caribbean, remains under Haitian jurisdiction. A spokesperson from the cruise line emphasized the importance of monitoring the situation closely and prioritizing the security of all involved parties. Affected ships, including Allure of the Seas , Adventure of the Seas , Wonder of the Seas , and Symphony of the Seas , will adjust their itineraries accordingly. Some passengers may enjoy extended days at sea, while others will visit Royal Caribbean's private resort in the Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay .

Beyond the impact on tourism, the turmoil in Haiti has had devastating humanitarian consequences, particularly for children. According to Unicef, ~3 million Haitian children are in urgent need of humanitarian aid. Port-au-Prince, the capital, has become a battleground, with reports of gang violence leading to the destruction of homes and the mass release of prisoners. The crisis has exacerbated food insecurity, with thousands of people displaced from their homes due to ongoing violence, as reported by the UN.
