Princess Cruises ships ranked by size from biggest to smallest — the complete list

Gene Sloan

Are you looking for the most venue-packed, resort-like Princess Cruises ships at sea? If so, you'll want to get on one of the biggest Princess cruise ships.

The biggest Princess cruise ships are, by their very nature, the Princess ships with the most onboard restaurants, bars and showrooms, as well as the most sprawling decktop pool and lounge areas. The biggest Princess ships have the biggest casinos and spas among ships in the Princess fleet and the most cabins and suites — and the most variation in cabin and suite types.

With room for 4,000 passengers or more, the biggest Princess ships are truly large resorts of the sort you find at the biggest vacation destination on land. If you're in the "bigger is better" camp when it comes to a resort experience, these are the Princess ships for you.

Still, Princess doesn't just operate large vessels. The Los Angeles-based cruise giant — the fifth largest cruise line in the world — also has several relatively small cruise ships in its fleet that carry just 2,000 or 3,000 people and have a more intimate feel. In some cases, these vessels are nearly 40% smaller than the size of Princess Cruises' biggest ships. These smaller ships, notably, have less deck-top pool space and fewer interior venues than the biggest Princess cruise ships. However, with fewer people on board, that's not necessarily a bad thing.

The smallest Princess cruise ships are best for vacationers who like a more intimate, less crowded resort experience.

What is the biggest Princess cruise ship?

The biggest Princess cruise ship is the 3,660-passenger Discovery Princess, which is also the line's newest vessel. It debuted in March 2022.

Discovery Princess is the sixth and final vessel in the Royal class of Princess ships that began rolling out in 2013. They all are roughly the same size, but Discovery Princess is just a tad bigger than its sister ships at 145,000 gross tons. The other five ships in the Royal-class series measure from 142,229 to 144,650 gross tons. Note that gross tons is a size measurement referring to interior space, not weight.

The ships in Princess' Royal class are significantly bigger than the ships in the line's other two classes of vessels (the Grand class and Coral class) and have more restaurants, bars, showrooms and deck-top pool space than the nine vessels in those classes.

The other Royal-class vessels that are similar in size to Discovery Princess are Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Majestic Princess, Regal Princess and Royal Princess.

For more details on Discovery Princess, including what venues are on board and what it's like to sail on the vessel, see TPG's first impressions of Discovery Princess after an early sailing.

What is the smallest Princess cruise ship?

The smallest Princess cruise ship is the 2,000-passenger Coral Princess. Measuring just 91,267 gross tons, it's about 36% smaller than Discovery Princess, making it a significantly smaller vessel.

Coral Princess dates to 2002, a time when cruise ships were built far smaller than they are today and with far fewer venues. At 21 years old, it's also one of the two oldest vessels in the Princess fleet and will probably be phased out sometime in the next decade.

While significantly smaller than the newest Princess ships, Coral Princess still has many of the signature spaces and venues found on new Princess vessels, including an Italian eatery called Sabatini's and a steakhouse.

Entertainment venues on Coral Princess include a relatively large main theater for production shows, a secondary lounge that offers comedy shows and other entertainment, and a casino. Like other Princess ships, the top deck of the vessel is mostly devoted to pool areas with hot tubs and lounge chairs. There's also a spa.

While smaller and older than the typical Princess ship, Coral Princess has a loyal following among Princess fans who prefer smaller and more intimate ships.

Are bigger Princess cruise ships coming?

Yes! Princess currently has two new, bigger cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Sun Princess in February 2024. This will be the first of an all-new Sphere class of vessels for the line that will be made up of ships that will be notably bigger than anything Princess has had in its fleet before.

Measuring 175,500 gross tons, Sun Princess will be about 21% bigger than the biggest Princess cruise ship currently at sea — a significant increase. It'll be nearly double the size of the smallest Princess ships currently at sea.

The second new ship that Princess has on order, to be called Star Princess, will be a sister vessel to Sun Princess of a similar size. It's due to begin sailing in 2025.

The Sphere-class vessels are currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard near Monfalcone, Italy.

Note that this isn't the first time Princess has named a ship Sun Princess or Star Princess. Both are recycled names from past Princess ships. Princess operated smaller vessels under the Sun Princess and Star Princess names up until 2020.

TPG recently got a sneak peek at the most notable new features under development for the new Sun Princess during a visit to the partly completed vessel at the Fincantieri shipyard.

Related: Everything to know about Princess cabins and suites

In addition to being significantly bigger than past Princess ships, the new Sun Princess will also be the first Princess ship with suites that come with exclusive access to a private restaurant, lounge and sun deck — a sign Princess is hoping to draw more upmarket travelers.

In all, the vessel is designed to hold 4,300 passengers at double occupancy.

What's the difference between bigger and smaller Princess ships?

The biggest Princess cruise ships have room for more onboard venues and attractions than smaller Princess ships. That makes them more alluring for vacationers who prefer a big resort experience with lots of options as compared to a stay at a smaller resort.

On the biggest Princess vessels, the Royal-class vessels, for instance, you'll find the largest piazza-like central atriums in the Princess fleet surrounded by lots of bars and restaurants; multiple entertainment venues for live shows, comedy acts and more; and expansive pool decks with more space for sunning than you'll find on smaller Princess vessels.

You'll also find some only-on-the-Royal-class-ships extras, including, on some of the ships, a glass-floored "SeaWalk" that extends over the side of the vessel.

Princess' smaller cruise ships also generally are its older cruise ships and lack some of the above features, which are more typical of newer ships. These smaller Princess ships have a more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships, and they hold fewer people.

While Royal-class ships can hold more than 4,500 passengers with every berth full, the line's smaller vessels (particularly the relatively small Island Princess and Coral Princess) often sail with just 2,000 or so passengers on board.

That makes the smaller Princess ships a good choice for someone who wants to try Princess but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The smallest ships in the Princess fleet thus appeal to a subset of Princess fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also often less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the smallest ships at Princess Cruises are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Discovery Princess.

Princess Cruise Ships by Size [2022] with Comparison Chart

Princess Cruise Ships by Size [2022] with Comparison Chart

Below is a full list of Princess Cruise Ships by Size . From their smallest vessel in the fleet, the Pacific Princess, to the largest cruise ship currently active, the Sky Princess.

Princess has significantly less variability in size when compared to other major cruise lines. Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer ships up and down the spectrum. The majority of Princess ships are in a tighter grouping. The lone outlier is Princess' smallest ship. When compared to the Sky Princess, it's almost 1/5th of the size !

Let's compare the Pacific Princess to the cruise line's largest ship, the Sky Princess. The former tips the scales at a measly 30k gross tons . Whereas the latter weighs in at a whopping 145k GT . The Pacific offers just 338 cabins while the Sky boasts almost 1,800 staterooms!

Here at Gangwaze, we don't discriminate when it comes to our Princess cruise ship size. Big and small, we'll cruise them all. Our choice in size depends on the occasion. For big family reunions, we need the biggest vessel (with the most hiding places). For romantic getaways we often prefer the more intimate ships.

First we'll need to provide a little detail regarding our sizing comparison chart included below. We're comparing Princess cruise ships by size using the metric, " Gross Tonnage ." This always causes some funny looks from our community. Gross tonnage is not exactly equal to "weight." The definition is a bit hairy. And by "hairy, we mean "boring." Here it is anyway.

Psst... you still there? You might be wondering why we use this measurement to determine Princess ship sizes. As noted above, it's used for safety rules and whatnot. As such, gross tonnage is the standard across this cruise line and all others. Every passenger cruise ship will have this measurement . This makes it easy to compare ship size across ship, class, cruise lines and more.

In addition to tonnage, you'll find a number of other stats in our ship list. These include ship length, beam, draft, passenger count, cabins, and a few others for your viewing pleasure.

Ok, we're done with today's virtual session on maritime lingo. Here's the good stuff.

Princess Cruise Ships by Size (Largest to Smallest)

Click above to  add our Princess Cruise Ships by Size Infograph to pinterest . Hopefully you have an active "next cruise" board in the works.

When choosing your perfect cruise, "size" should absolutely be considered . You'll want to ask yourself the following. Do you mind walking long distances? Do you prefer variety in dining venues or consistency? Is "sea-sickness" a potential issue? Are you hoping to visit smaller ports only accessible via smaller ships? Your answers to these questions should guide your decision on sizing preference.

Often we're asked if price affects size. The cost of a Princess cruise isn't directly correlated with size. You won't find that the bigger the ship, the more the cost. Nor will you find the opposite. You won't necessarily pay less for the largest Princess ship vs the smallest. It will all depend on the specific itinerary. To get a sense of pricing, please use our widget below.

"Price" and "size" aren't the only other factors. Of course there are plenty of other variables to consider wen choosing your perfect vacation. Here are a few to consider: Availability; Itinerary Length; Ship Age; Departure Port; Destination . Those are the biggies, but not at all an exhaustive list.

However, we always include "ship size" towards the top of the list . There's no doubt it will impact your cruise in major ways. You'll have a much different experience on the Pacific Princess vs one of the new, behemoths. Again, we're not here to judge. We're here to provide you with all of the information you need to make your perfect decision.

What is Princess' largest ship? The largest, active Princess cruise ship is currently the Sky Princess. It has a gross tonnage of 145,281 GT and measures 1,083 feet in length. She holds a total of 4,946 passengers, 1,346 of these crew members and the rest vacationers. The Enchanted and Discovery Princess are both similar in size, but will measure slightly smaller at 145,000 GT.

What is Princess' smallest ship? The Pacific Princess is, by huge margin, the smallest active vessel in the fleet. At just 30k gross tons, it's almost 1/5th the size of the Sky Princess. Royal Princess Overview

Royal Princess  was christened by the lovely and royal Duchess of Cambridge, formerly Kate Middleton. This ship offers many incredible features, most notably the SeaWalk, a glass enclosed hallway that extends 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship giving passengers a spectacular and unobstructed view of the ocean below. Royal Princess features dozens of food options and an area to play bocce ball, croquet and golf, along with an expanded atrium with a tea tower where passengers can brew their own tea blend - a very royal experience, indeed.

  • Passenger Capacity: 3,560 (double occupancy)
  • Year Built: 2013
  • Last Refurbished:  2018

Royal Princess Balcony Stateroom - Princess Cruises

  • Balconies Royal Princess has abolished oceanview cabins. Princess made all of their outside cabins balconies, which gives passengers not only great views of the ports they're in and the oceans they are traversing, but with a balcony you get to experience cruising with all of your senses. You’ll hear the sea birds squaw, you’ll smell the fresh air and feel the breeze on your face. A balcony offers a step up, fit for the Royal Princess’ esteemed passengers.

Royal Princess Atrium - Princess Cruises

  • The Atrium The Royal Princess takes Princess Cruises to a new level. With an expanded size and lots of new features, the design team on the ship reinvented many of Princess’ core features. The Atrium, which is the center piece of the ship, is 50 percent larger than any Atrium before her. The Royal Princess’ Atrium connects three stories of the ship with beautiful staircases and presents the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee or catch an interactive show.

Princess Cruises' Royal Princess

  • Godmother To honor the Royal Princess , none other than the Duchess of Cambridge christened the ship when she debuted in the spring of 2013. The Duchess, formerly known as Kate Middleton, christened the ship just over a month before giving birth to the heir to the British throne, Prince George. Middleton carries on an important family tradition as the original Royal Princess was christened by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Princess Cruises Ships by Size, Age and Class (2022)

Discovery Princess

Princess Cruises has an active fleet of fifteen cruise ships with a further two ships on order (due 2023 and 2025).

In this guide, we will cover all the different ships in the Princess Cruises fleet and how they compare to each other.

Introduction to Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises is an American cruise line which is part of the Carnival Corporation and sister to other brands such as Cunard Line , P&O Cruises and Holland America Line .

Its headquarters are based in Santa Clarita, California, however, some marketing activities are also carried out at Carnival House in Southampton, England.

The company itself was made famous by the television series, The Love Boat, however, it was founded in 1965 when Stanley McDonald chartered the original ship Princess Patricia to sail Mexican Riveria cruises when traditionally the ship would have been laid up for the winter.

Eventually, P&O Cruises acquired Princess in 1974, at that point the line had two ships – Island Princess and Pacific Princess .

Much later on, in 2003 when Carnival acquired P&O Princess Cruises (as it was then called) Carnival transferred operations of Princess Cruises over to America back from the UK.

Princess Cruises operate cruises worldwide – with many of their ships offering Alaskan itineraries and more recently several more of their ships now sailing from Southampton to Northern Europe, the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean.

Princess Cruises Ships by Size (from largest to smallest)

What does ‘tonnage (grt)’ mean.

GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) is a term used to calculate the volume inside a ship. It is a measure of cubic capacity and is calculated by the total volume from inside the hull and decks of the ship. 1 GRT = 100 cubic feet of space. In essence, the bigger the GRT – the more ‘space’ the ship has for passengers, cargo, etc.

How are ‘Passengers (Max)’ calculated?

You’ll see multiple numbers for passengers on ships – this is because many ships include extra beds in cabins (such as the sofa/couch can convert to a pull-out bed) – but the majority of cabins usually have 2 people in them. the ‘Max’ number is if every cabin used their additional pull-out bed, etc. This number is unlikely to be reached very frequently.

Princess Cruises Ships by Age (from newest to oldest)

Are all of princess cruises ships new builds.

Yes. All of the Princess ships are built specifically for the line. However, two of the design classes (Grand-class and Royal-class) have been used across sister brand P&O Cruises .

These include:

  • Ventura and Azura for P&O Cruises (Grand-class)
  • Britannia for P&O Cruises (Royal-class)

Princess Cruises Ships by Class (from newest to oldest)

Final thoughts.

Princess Cruises is a family-friendly cruise line with a reputation for great service and beautiful looking ships. Out of all the Carnival brands, Princess generally is first with new technologies (such as the Sea Medallion – a small device you wear that allows you to enter your cabin, pay for services and locate your family anywhere on the ship).

Princess has proved very popular in their Alaskan itineraries and also cruises from Australia and New Zealand. Recently, they have been offering near year-round cruises from Southampton over multiple ships as the market for new cruisers hots up in Europe.

Celebrity Solstice vs Princess Cruises Royal Princess

Celebrity Solstice cruise ship

The Celebrity Solstice was built in 2008. It was renovated in 2021. The Celebrity Soltice was the first cruise ship to feature a full half-acre of living grass on board. It's 5 years older than the Royal Princess , which was built in 2013 and renovated in 2018. This ship is the third to carry the Royal Princess name. It's also one of 3 ships that feature Princess' Watercolor Fantasy Show, an outdoor dancing fountain show.

Comparison Overview

Number of passengers, food and restaurants.

  • Bars and Drinks

Pools and Hot Tubs

Ship features and activities, cruise costs, onboard costs.

The Solstice is considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,033 feet long and 121 feet wide, it's roughly the length of 2.9 football fields, as wide as 2.3 tractor-trailers and the same height as a 13-story building. Compared to the Princess Cruises Royal Princess, the Solstice is 14% smaller in terms of overall tons.

Celebrity Solstice holds 20% fewer passengers than the Royal Princess based on double occupancy (two people per room). When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, or what we call the "Space Ratio," the Solstice has more space per person compared to the Royal Princess. This means that you might have a bit more space to yourself on the ship, although there still could be some crowded areas like buffets, pools, etc.

Luminae on the Celebrity Solstice

Food is a big part of any cruise, and the ship you choose can make a huge difference in your food experience.

The Solstice has 15 different dining options like Luminae , Murano , and Blu . Of those options, 9 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 6 options have an additional fee.

The Royal Princess has 5 more dining venues. Some of its popular venues are Crown Grill , Chef's Table Lumiere , and World Fresh Marketplace . 11 of these restaurants are complementary and the other 7 have an additional fee.

If you like having a variety of places to eat, the Royal Princess might be a better choice. It has 33% more dining options than the Solstice.

Both ships have a similar number of paid versus included dining options.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Both ships serve the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.

There are also plenty of bars available on these ships. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

The main pool on the Celebrity Solstice

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day for 7 days in a pool, a cruise isn't for you. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Celebrity Solstice has a total of 3 pools and 6 hot tubs. Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

The Princess Cruises Royal Princess has the same number of pools as the Solstice and more hot tubs.

Both ships have lots of activities to keep you busy throughout your cruise. Below you'll see a list of some of the major features on these ships. You might up paying more while on board the Solstice. Only 67% of the activities below are included in your cruise fare. On the Royal Princess, 73% of the activities are included at no additional cost.

Celebrity and Princess Cruises are both considered "Premium" cruise lines. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year. Typically newer ships cost more, so a cruise on Celebrity Solstice will likely be cheaper than on Princess Cruises Royal Princess.

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you compare onboard prices to see if you might spend more on a specific ship.

Celebrity Cruise Lines offers an "All Included" program. Guests who book a cruise using this promotion will have gratuities and alcohol included. Some sailings are available without this program so pay attention when booking. Typically prices are lower if they don't include "Always Included." The wifi and alcohol package are the base levels and can be upgraded for an additional cost.

Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

All staterooms are quads (accommodating max 4 passengers). All balcony cabins are with sliding glass doors (floor-ceiling) opening to a private step-out veranda. Balcony staterooms have ample closet space, bathroom (WC-shower), double sofabed, desk-chair, chest of drawers.

Royal Princess Suites are in 2 types - Balcony Suite (S2-Owners, S3-S4-Penthouse, S5-Premium) and Mini-Suite (MA, MB, MC, ME, MF, M1-M6-Premium). Bonus amenities offered in all Suites include deluxe mattress/pillows, 2 TVs, upgraded bathroom amenities (massage showerheads, luxury bath products, luxury bathrobes, terry towels), luxury furniture on the balcony. Balcony Suites have additional perks: choice of 3 deluxe mattresses, iPod docking station, sun loungers on the balcony, bathroom with separate shower stall, complimentary services (Internet Cafe, laundry/dry cleaning), exclusive access to Concierge Lounge (located on Deck 14).

All Royal Princess cabins as standard/complimentary amenities offer living area (vanity, desk, seating), 2 twin beds (convertible to Queen-size), deluxe bedding sets (Egyptian cotton linens), wardrobe, desk, smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, bath products (shampoo, body lotion, conditioner), minibar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, evening turndown service, complimentary 24-hour room service.

All staterooms are fitted with the signature "Princess Luxury Bed". The new "cruise bed" was developed in collaboration with PhD Michael Breus (commonly known as "The Sleep Doctor") and the designer Candice Olson. The new cabin beds feature a luxury pillow-top mattress, individually wrapped coils (reducing surface sway) and hypoallergenic duvets.
