Status icons appear in the status bar on your iPhone:

About the status icons on your iPhone

To learn what an icon means, find it below.

Your carrier’s 5G network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network. Works with iPhone 12 and later . (Not available in all areas.)

Your carrier’s 5G network with higher frequency is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network. Works with iPhone 12 and later . (Not available in all areas.)

Your carrier’s 5G E network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network. Works with iPhone 8 and later. (Not available in all areas.)

Your carrier’s LTE network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network. Works with iPhone 5 and later. (Not available in all areas.)

Your carrier’s 3G UMTS (GSM) or EV-DO (CDMA) network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network.

Your carrier’s 4G UMTS (GSM) or LTE network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network. (Not available in all areas.)

Your carrier’s GPRS (GSM) or 1xRTT (CDMA) network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network.

Your carrier’s EDGE (GSM) network is available, and your iPhone can connect to the internet over that network.

You’re in range of your cellular network and can make and receive calls. If there’s no signal, "No service" or "SOS" appears.

On your iPhone with Dual SIM capability, you’re in range of your cellular network and can make and receive calls. If there’s no signal, "No service" or "SOS" appears.

You can use Wi-Fi calling . Your carrier also appears next to the icon.

Your iPhone is connected to the internet over Wi-Fi .

You’re connected to a network using VPN.

You're no longer connected to a VPN network.

There’s network activity.

Call Forwarding is on.

Airplane Mode is on. You can’t make calls or use Bluetooth until you turn off this setting .

Teletype (TTY) is on.

Portrait Orientation Lock is on. Your screen won't rotate until you turn off this setting .

Silent mode is on. This setting uses only vibrations and silences the ringer for calls, alerts, and notifications. It does not silence alarms.

Do Not Disturb is on. This setting silences calls, alerts, and notifications until you turn it off . It does not silence alarms.

Driving Focus is on. This setting silences calls, alerts, and notifications while driving until you turn it off. It does not silence alarms.

Sleep Focus is on. This setting silences calls, alerts, and notifications according to your sleep schedule . It does not silence alarms.

Your iPhone is syncing with iTunes .

Your iPhone is locked with a passcode or Touch ID.

Your iPhone is paired with a headset, headphones, or earbuds.

An alarm is set.

This icon shows the battery level of your iPhone. If this icon is yellow, Low Power Mode is on . If this icon is red, then your iPhone has less than 20% charge.

The battery level of your paired Bluetooth device.

Your iPhone is connected to the internet through the Personal Hotspot of another iOS device.

Your iPhone is charging.

Your iPhone is connected to CarPlay.

You're sharing your screen with SharePlay.

SharePlay is active.

There is no cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, but Emergency SOS via satellite is available in your location. Works with iPhone 14 or later.

Voice Control is listening for your commands.

If you see SOS in the status bar

SOS might appear in the status bar of your iPhone or iPad. When you see this message, your device isn't connected to your cellular network , but you can make emergency calls through other carrier networks.

The feature of SOS appearing in the status bar of iPhone and iPad is available in Australia, Canada, and the United States.

If you see blue, green, red, or purple in the status bar

On iPhone X and later, the color shows as a bubble behind the time. On iPhone 8 or earlier, the color goes all the way across the status bar. Here's what each color means:

Your iPhone is using Screen Mirroring , or an app is actively using your location .

You're on a call or your iPhone is providing a Personal Hotspot .*

Your iPhone is either recording sound or your screen.

Your iPhone is using SharePlay to share content.

* For Personal Hotspot on iPhone 8 or earlier, you can also see how many devices joined your hotspot. appears in the status bar of iOS devices using Personal Hotspot.

If you see orange or green indicators in the status bar

With iOS 14 and later, you might see an orange or green indicator in the status bar on your iPhone. These indicators appear when the microphone and/or camera are being used by an app.

Safari wants to change colors like a chameleon — you can stop it

Safari in Apple iOS 15 , iPadOS 15 and macOS 12 feels like a whole new browser in a lot of ways. And while I like Tab Groups, there's one feature that I immediately didn't really enjoy and wanted to disable. And fortunately, that's very easy to do.

This new feature changes the color of the interface around the tabs, bookmark and navigation button areas in Safari, to match the color of the website you're using. Sometimes this change doesn't bother me, such as when Safari goes black while I'm reading a CNN article, but when it takes on a color like blue (seen above for CNBC, or on TweetDeck), it's a bit jarring to my eye.

The intent is clearly to immerse the reader in the site's aesthetic, but I'd rather that site pop off the neutral shade like it did in past versions. That might sound awesome to you. But if it doesn't, read on. And don't be ashamed. It's normal to not like change. I just wish some other Safari changes were equally configurable, as it doesn't make sense that the Reload button is now hidden in iPadOS.

And so I figured out how to change this setting in all three of the operating systems. Fortunately, it's the exact same in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15, and macOS 15 is only slightly different. 

How to stop Safari from changing colors in macOS 12

1. Click Safari in the Menu bar. Of course, you'll need to have Safari open for this.

2. Click Preferences.

3. Click Advanced.

4. Uncheck "Show color in tab bar."

How to stop Safari from changing colors in iOS 15

According to my colleague Philip Michaels, who wrote our hands-on iOS 15 beta review, Safari's color-changing nature isn't a big a deal on the iPhone. Specifically, he told me "to be very honest, I do not notice it at all," as he's too busy being confused by the Safari iOS tab bar moving to the bottom of the screen .

That might be because iOS gives the tab bar much less space than macOS and iPadOS do. That said, here's how to disable it outright.

1. Open Settings and tap Safari.

2. Turn "Show Color in Tab Bar" off.

Here, the difference is a little more pronounced, as you'll notice in the above TweetDeck screenshot. That big blue section is what temporarily appears when you pull a web page down to reload it. 

1. Open Settings.

2. Tap Safari.

3. Turn "Show Color in Tab Bar" off.

There, now you know how to stop Safari for changing its color to match websites, on every new Apple OS.

Light blue keys on keyboard

I’ve noticed for a while now the caps lock key, the number key, the return and delete key and the emoji key have turned light blue, this only occurs in the safari app. Should I be concerned? I’m on iOS 14.2

Report this Bug:

If it is just with particular apps, then I would assume it is nothing of a hardware issue. So, let Apple know of this, reporting of it as a bug in the macOS .

• My keyboard randomly types a, and the 1,4, and capslock buttons are sticky. I think that something spilled onto the keyboard when I wasn't looking. I am very serious in taking care of this keyboard, and I am not sure how this could have happened. There is no damage to the actual ipad. It is just the problem with 'a', '1', '4', and capslock. the numbers are sticky to the keyboard which is why I think some liquid was spilled onto it, and the 'a' randomly types whenever I am using my keyboard. Even if I have my ipad off and the keyboard is open, the ipad will turn on as if the 'a' button is being pressed. 86 1
