Ziplining at the San Diego Zoo: Everything You Need to Know
Ziplining over the safari sounds like something that is too good to be true. Is it?
No! You can actually zipline at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park with a bird's eye view over giraffes, rhinos, and other wildlife.
What's Included in This Experience
As one of the longest ziplines in all of California, this zipline is one that you'll remember forever.
Opened in 2009, this zipline ride spans over 2/3's of a mile as riders fly 130 feet above the ground, while seeing animals from the Asian Savanna and the African Plains.
You'll travel at fast enough speeds to get a nice breeze, but slow enough where you can still enjoy the scenery and the animals that you encounter.
What You Can Expect
When you arrive to ride the zipline, you'll be pleased to know that there's several steps that you have to take prior to doing the actual experience.
- The ride attendants will help you put on all of your gear appropriately.
- You'll store all of your belongings in a safe area, where it will be waiting for you at the end of the ride.
- A safety video will be shown.
- You'll go through a 'practice' zipline called the Fledgling Run, which is a small zipline which allows you to get a feel for what you're going to experience.
- You'll then ride with your 'party' in a Safari truck up a hill to actually arrive to the zipline that you'll be riding. On the way you'll see a lot of the behind-the-scenes, and see some animals and different types of plant-life.
- During this time, the tour guide will share different types of facts regarding the park, zipline and wildlife
- Then it's time to get off of the vehicle and make your way over to the zipline
- You'll sit down, get strapped on and now it's time to enjoy this unique and amazing ride. Keep an eye for animals that you'll see!
- Near the end of the ride, the zipline will use the self-braking and giant springs for a smooth and safe stop.
- At the end of the ride, there will be ride operators waiting and once you reach the end, they'll help you get unstrapped safely.

“One last thing before you fly,” said Chelsey, the Flightline Safari tour guide, calmly. “Do not scream. You’ll alarm the rhinos, and they’ll start a stampede.”
There I was, standing 160-feet above unidentifiable-but-still-threatening animals, about to soar over them at 50 miles-per-hour, being told to keep all of the yelling I had planned on doing on the inside.
Now that’s the real challenge. Let’s back up to the beginning.
The latest dare for this series - to go ziplining - had me surprised to find that the San Diego Zoo Safari Park boasts its very own wire ride. Despite living here for nine years, I never knew that we could zip across wild animals, right in our own backyard.
The Flightline Safari is actually the longest continuous zipline in California and one of the longest in the world. It opened in 2009 and runs two-thirds of a mile over the Asian and African animal exhibits.
The experience began when I met the peppy Flightline team first thing in the morning, and they sat me down to watch a brief pre-flight training video. I then strapped into my gear, and we walked to what they call the “fledgling run,” a practice zip only 470-feet long to get a feel for what will happen on the real deal. I whizzed through the trees on this short flight, as nerves slowly perked up. The toughest part? My legs flew into the sky upon landing, a bit abrupt when the catch stopped my speed rather quickly.
Next up, the guides and I packed into a safari car to drive up to the top of the mountain where the launching pad overlooks the stunning San Pasqual Valley. The ride itself provides a behind-the-scenes tour of the 1,800 acre park while the staff point out elephants, condors, succulent gardens and more, emphasizing the remarkable conservation progress made by the San Diego Zoo.
Standing on the ledge overlooking the vast landscape below, my fear of heights began to bubble up. It’s an unbeatable view of the Safari Park though, and a vantage point that can rarely be seen. Chelsey led me to the edge, hooked my harness into the cable trolley, and reminded me, once again, not to scream.
Right. Got it.
“3... 2... 1...” she counted down, as I held my breath and clenched my fists. After about two seconds of fear overtaking all common sense, I relaxed a bit in the hammock-like contraption. It was beautiful, serene, peaceful even. It certainly didn’t feel like 50 miles-per-hour, but more like a gentle float through the clouds.

Below, I could see grazing antelope and even a few rhinos, although most of them blended in with the rocks. It’s such a unique way to see the park and get a true bird’s eye-view of the animals. I focused on taking it all in, as the wind whipped past my face. I was sure to keep my mouth shut, but inside I was screaming something like, “WOOOOOAAAHHH!”
Two minutes later, the ride ends. The second my feet hit the ground, I was itching to go again.
The entire experience, from start to finish, takes about an hour. The Flightline Safari is available for ages eight-and-up and between 60 and 300 pounds. You can fly up to four at a time, which would make for a memorable family experience.

Zip line tour
Great trip to the wild animal park. The zip line tour was a lot of fun. Added the deluxe package which added some better close up views of the animals. Would do it again.
So ima be honest, I did the zoo one day and the safari the next. If I had to choose the best it would be the safari. But only go to the safari if you are going to do at least 1 extra safari that you pay for. Way worth it. The tram was working again and the line was long but you could pay $20 per person and skip the line and walk straight to being next in line which was way worth it than waiting over an hour. I also did the hot air balloon thing which was $20 each as well.also Worth it for the money. By the time I finished all those 3 things it was 3pm and I got there at 11am. Have some kind of plan as to what you’re going to do cause it’s a lot of walking. My only negative comment is the app. It just isn’t great in planning your trip. Or following along on the map. But that is me being picky. If I come back to San Diego I am going to do the safari again over the zoo and do a different safari experience.
I have been to the Safari Park several times because I have an annual membership, but I finally booked an additional experience and did the Deluxe Flightline Safari! Definitely worth the extra money to get a short safari tour plus the zipline. Jerrett was our guide and he really made our experience enjoyable. He was funny and knowledgeable and you can tell he truly enjoys his job. Highly recommend!
We did the ultimate safari and Sam, our guide, was great. She was well informed, patient, so kind with my daughter, and showed us a wonderful different perspective. We had a great time and highly recommend seeing the Safari Park this way.
We enjoy the tram ride and the close encounters. The opportunity for a year-round adventure is exciting to me.
Wild animal Park was exceptionally clean. We bought a year membership. Employees were very pleasant Looking forward to my return.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Spend the night with the animals on a Roar & Snore Safari. Guests sleep in comfortable tent cabins with cots and heaters. Witness the animals' activity after dark and roast s'mores around the campfire. – Sharael Kolberg
If you want more of the San Diego Zoo , head about 35 miles north to its Safari Park in Escondido. Here, you can view some of Africa's most beloved animals – including lions, elephants and cheetahs – roaming free (well, relatively). There are also meerkats, zebras, gorillas and bald eagles, to name a few. True to its name, the park offers a variety of different safaris, including a zip line safari and a wildlife safari in an open-air truck.
Like the zoo, the Safari Park is operated by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance and regularly wins high praise from animal lovers, who say the facility offers an excellent way to observe the multitude of creatures. Travelers frequently describe the staff as very friendly and knowledgeable. Visitors acknowledge that it is an inconvenient trek from San Diego, but the unique habitat created for the animals is very fascinating to see. Some travelers even went so far to say that it felt like they were on a real African safari. Many point out that it can get extremely hot here in summer and advise you to plan accordingly.
The park is open daily, usually from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. but extended hours at select times throughout the year may be until 7 or 8 p.m. Prices for single-day tickets start at $72 for visitors ages 12 and older and $62 for kids 3 to 11. This covers admission to the park and use of the Africa Tram that travels through it. Individual safari experiences cost extra. Packages combining admission to both the San Diego Zoo and the Safari Park or blending visits to the two Wildlife Alliance institutions with a trip to SeaWorld San Diego are also offered. If you're hoping to visit the Safari Park, you'll either need to drive or take a taxi as the city doesn't offer an efficient mode of public transportation between the zoo and park. For additional information, see the park's website .

U.S. News Insider Tip: Leave your car in one of the parking lots and take the free Balboa Park Tram that runs every 10 to 15 minutes to get around. Save money with a Balboa Park Explorer Pass, which offers discounts at park museums. – Sharael Kolberg
Home to the renowned San Diego Zoo , this 1,200-acre park is the city's cultural hub. Located in downtown San Diego (about 1 ½ miles north of the city center), Balboa Park is a great place for a stroll, a bike ride or a picnic. Wander around the park's many gardens while admiring the intricate Spanish-Renaissance architecture that permeates the grounds (the best examples are the California Building and the reconstructed House of Hospitality). The Botanical Building is a great starting point in Balboa Park. The building is one of the most photographed places in Balboa Park and is one of the largest lath structures in the world. But don't just look at it. The famous botanical building features more than 2,100 permanent plants, including striking collections of tropical plants and orchids. Balboa Park also features a cactus garden, a rose garden, a Japanese-style garden as well as a palm tree canyon, among many others.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park
Like a journey to Africa, a day at this spectacular park lets you see some of the world’s most magnificent—and endangered—animals at close range and in expansive naturalized enclosures. A tram ride leads you past roaming groups of rhinos, gazelles, giraffes, and other species ranging freely through savannah-like expanses. African lions wrestle with their cubs in specially designed enclosures that look like part of the whole, but are safely contained from other animals. There’s plenty to see on foot too: the amazing Tiger Trail exhibit lets you get remarkable underwater views of Sumatran tigers swimming in the Tiger Trail exhibit.
"Static-line hot-air balloon rides and a long, long zip line ride offer great views of the park and surrounding region."
For even more up-close looks at the park’s animals, including premium behind-the-scenes tours, plus unique experiences such as the Cheetah Safari, where you can watch as these amazing cats reach speeds up to 70 mph/113 kph. Special Jungle Ropes Safaris are a great way for your little monkeys to burn off some steam. Static-line hot-air balloon rides and a long, long zip line ride offer great views of the park and surrounding region. And for a California-style hint of what sleeping in the African bush might be like, Roar & Snore Safaris let you spend the night in large tents (some even have beds and electricity) at a campground overlooking the African Plains exhibit.
Come for the animals; then take time to see the plants. The park has extraordinary landscaped areas, all worth strolling. Especially beautiful in spring is the Nativescapes Gardens, focusing on drought-tolerant species adapted to the region’s sunny, dry climate. Free, guided tours are offered at 10 a.m. the second Saturday in April and May.
Southern California
Spotlight: san diego zoo.
Visiting this expansive zoo in San Diego’s Balboa Park is more than a chance to see animals from all over the world: it’s a chance to see one of the world’s finest facilities for seeing and learning about rare and endangered species, all in carefully naturalized enclosures spread across 100 acres/40 hectares in Balboa Park. More than 3,700 animals from 650 species are showcased here, including crowd-pleasers like giant pandas and fuzzy koala bears and intriguing oddities like naked mole rats. (Visiting the San Diego Zoo soon? This $4 OFF coupon will save you money on a one-day pass.)
Plan to spend at least a day at this extraordinary site, and wear comfortable shoes—you’ll likely do a lot of walking. If you have to cut your visit short, no worries: just log onto a collection of entertaining animal cams, which let you see what’s going on with the a variety of species—the koalas and pandas as well as Sumatran tigers, polar bears, California condors, and more—even if you’re not in the park.
Giant pandas
With their cartoon-cute looks and roly-poly gait, the zoo’s giant pandas are no-brainer favourites. The zoo’s resident trio—Gao Gao, Bai Yun and their child, Xiao Liwu (born in 2012)—lumber about in their bamboo-shaded enclosure, munching away on leaves (about 320 kilos of bamboo are harvested per week) seemingly oblivious to their adoring fans. It’s a rare chance to see these charmers—only an estimated 1,600 giant pandas are left in the wild, roaming the high mountains of western China.
To avoid crowds, consider joining the Early Morning Panda Tour, which includes access to the park before gates officially open. You’ll see the bears get their breakfast, then take a guided shuttle tour of the zoo.
Conrad Prebys Australian Outback
Whether it’s a bounding kangaroo, a feisty Tasmanian devil or a stuffed-animal-cute koala, the fascinating animals of Australia are an entertaining assortment. The extensive Conrad Prebys Australian Outback exhibit at San Diego Zoo aims to let you see and learn about these intriguing creatures—some of them extremely rare—in attractive enclosures that mimic their natural habitats Down Under and provide clever viewing areas.
For example, wide decks wrapping around Queenslander House (a replica of an 1800s house from Queensland, Australia) overlook the koala colony, putting you at eye level with the bear-like creatures. Here you can watch the fuzzy marsupials groom, nap (which they do a lot), lord it over their designated areas (male koalas are territorial) and eat from their high perches in the enclosure’s trees. See if you can spy little koalas, called joeys, clinging to their mother’s backs.
Inside Queenslander House find out more about these animals with a peek inside the koala food prep kitchen, where the keepers prepare the tree-dwellers’ meals of the tender shoots, leaves and twigs of the eucalyptus tree. Walk to the nearby enclosures to hear cockatoos squawk, kookaburras (a bird known as the bushman’s alarm clock) trill, chortle and hoot and see wallabies hop.
If you’d like a more in-depth experience book the one hour Discovery Cart Tour to learn more about koalas, kangaroos and other animals from knowledgeable guides who will answer your questions and relate how the zoo’s conservation efforts are having an impact worldwide. These tours go to areas of the zoo not visited by the bus tours and groups are small so the guides can answer more of your questions.
Special Experiences at the San Diego Zoo
Whether it’s a chance to get an early-morning peek at pandas, or a special sleepover once darkness falls, special tours and insider activities take you from just looking at zoo critters to learning even more about them, and even meeting special zoo ‘ambassador’ animals. Inside Look tours let you learn more about the zoo’s elephants, polar bears and other creatures. Themed sleepovers let families and adults bed down in snug tents in a special area of the zoo, and take private tours and walks after dark. The ultimate way to go? It’s undoubtedly the Exclusive VIP Experience, a totally customised tour where you can design a special tour that best fits your own interests, so you can talk with animal experts, see off-exhibit areas and have special animal interactions.
Other Exhibits
Sure you’ll want to see lions, tigers and panda bears, but take time to visit some of the zoo’s less familiar species too. In the tropical African rainforest exhibits of Lost Forest, you’ll expect to find gorillas and hippos, but bonobos? Believed to be one of the world’s most rare and intelligent animals, these primates have a fascinating and complex social structures ruled by females. In the Arctic area (fittingly situated at the north side of the park), you’ll find enormous polar bears, but also the beautiful arctic fox with unique features, like hair on the bottoms of its paws to help grip on ice, for living in a wintry world.
Balboa Park
From pandas and koala bears at its iconic zoo, to a remarkable collection of museums and gardens, this oasis in the heart of the city has been a vibrant part of San Diego culture for a hundred years. First and foremost, Balboa Park is a horticultural marvel: the Inez Grant Parker Memorial Rose Garden alone has more than 130 varieties of rose (learn more about it and the rest of the park’s greenery on free 1-hour Offshoot Tours, offered on Saturday morning).
Museums abound; local favourites include the Museum of Man, San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, Fleet Science Center and the San Diego Air & Space Museum. Culture reigns supreme too: The Old Globe Theatre hosts its famed Shakespeare Festival each summer; live bands and outdoor film screenings abound.
All this, plus one of the world’s finest zoos. Over 3,700 animals from 650 species—many of them extremely rare— are showcased at the San Diego Zoo, with naturalised exhibits covering roughly 100 acres. Get a special look at the zoo’s three giant pandas by signing up for ‘Early Morning with Pandas’, visiting the panda viewing area before it officially opens for the day. Check the Balboa Park website for special events, and for ticketing deals bundling zoo and museum visits.

The best time to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park is in the springtime, during birthing season. The busiest times of the year are from June-August and during school vacations. The park offers many nursery exhibits to see the baby animals, including enclosures that let visitors watch them as they take their first steps or are fed from a bottle.
Regardless of the time of year, the best time of day for guests to visit is in the morning as the animals tend to be most active then, before the temperatures reach afternoon highs. Tip: To avoid crowds, plan to visit the park on a weekday if possible.

The Exhibits
There is so much to see and do at the Safari Park, especially at the extensive free-range animal enclosures in the park – the park has a whopping 13 habitats, each with their own theme.
Tiger Trail
Most visitors begin their visit with a trip through Tiger Trail, where you can watch the elusive Sumatran Tigers in their habitat as you walk along the path. You’ll have many opportunities to see the Safari Park’s tigers up close in three separate yards; one has a cooling waterfall and one includes a pool.
Africa Tram
Definitely plan on riding the Africa Tram, which runs from 10am – 5:15pm daily. It’s an exciting, open-air expedition aboard a safari tour vehicles, and you’ll wind through all of the various animal habitats on a relaxing adventure. The ride path takes you around some of the field exhibits, giving you a chance to connect with the animals on a closer level. The entire tram ride is approximately 25 minutes. You can catch the tram at the African Outpost.
Lion Camp offers an exciting opportunity to view these incredible creatures up close. You’ll be able to observe natural lion behaviors as the cats romp in the grass, explore the logs and rocks, or rest in the cool shade. Let the little ones walk right up to the large glass panels for some eye-to-eye moments!
Gorilla Forest
The Gorilla Forest is a large enclosure that houses a variety of different animals in addition to the gorilla; including several birds, lemurs, and the Hidden Jungle – which is a fun off-the-beaten-path area to explore with little ones.
Elephant Valley
Elephant Valley is comprised of two large exhibit yards for the Park’s African elephant herd. The Park actually rescued the founder herd from a scheduled cull in Swaziland in 2003, and since then, have celebrated several births!
You can observe the action from the Elephant Viewing Patio, located at the south end of Elephant Valley, next to Tembo Stadium. There are also shade structures made of simulated rock, and plenty of room to roam. Keep an eye out for the playful younger ones in the herd!
Add-on Experiences
In addition to seeing the animals and regular exhibits, the Safari Park has a wide array of add-on activities including: a zip line, balloon Safaris, campouts, playgrounds, behind-the-scenes safaris, rope climbing through the trees, encounters with animal ambassadors, trike safaris, and customized experiences with personal guides – so you can really make a whole day of fun out of your visit and tailor your experiences to your kids’ interests!
Visit the park website for details.
Tips for Families
- Be sure to bring snacks, water or a water bottle, and a picnic lunch if you don’t plan on buying lunch inside the wild animal park. There are plenty of tables throughout where you can eat the food you brought from home.
- Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes, and bring a stroller for younger kids who might get tired from walking around the Park all day. Strollers are also available for rent at the Park.
- Arrive early, at opening time if possible – temps are cooler and you’ll see more animals out and about.
- There are four separate play areas, including one “cool zone” with water misters during the spring and summer months. Kids will love these when it’s hot out. The Park also has misting fans on many of the paths.
- Bring a swimsuit/towel for kids who want to make a big splash in the Savanna Cool Zone.
- Pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen – it can get warm at the Park, especially during the spring and summer months.
- The park is open even in the rain. In fact, it’s an excellent time to go, when many of the animals may come out to soak it up. And you might feel like the only person in the whole park.
Regardless of how you spend your day at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, there is truly no other place like it in San Diego. Be sure to check out our San Diego Zoo Guide if you plan on checking that out, as well!

Today, the USS Midway is a museum showcasing the rich history of the ship and its role in American naval aviation.
From the flight deck to the mess hall, this massive vessel has over 60 exhibits, including a collection of restored aircraft. You'll want to give yourself at least 3 to 4 hours to appreciate this museum fully. However, one-hour guided tours and self-guided audio tours are also available.
