Carriage Rides In Savannah, GA

savannah carriage tours photos

Several tour companies offer horse-drawn carriage rides through Savannah’s Historic District. Most tours last around 45 minutes to an hour, and many include some sort of historical narration.

Many people have concerns about the welfare of carriage horses. Savannah does regulate the conditions under which the horses work, but not as fully as other cities. If you are concerned about Savannah’s draft horses, read the section below on horse welfare so you can make an informed decision about your carriage ride.

Horse Welfare

The American public is beginning to question the ethics and safety of urban carriage tours, with several cities banning horse-drawn carriage rides altogether.

Supporters of a wider ban on carriage tours, such as the Humane Society of the United States, argue that the traffic and noise of city streets are stressful to horses and that the heavy work and air pollution cause unacceptable levels of injury, ill-health and discomfort.

Others, including the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, think that the carriage horse industry can be acceptable if strict regulations on the care and working condition of horses are enforced: adequate veterinary care, stabling and feed; access to water while working; maximum loads and working hours; a full stoppage of carriage rides if the weather is too hot or too cold for the horses to work comfortably.

Savannah’s carriage tour industry meets some, but not all, of these standards. Its city ordinance on Horse-Drawn Carriages For Hire obliges carriage tour operators to meet minimum standards of veterinary care, harness upkeep and off- and on-duty treatment of the horses. It also restricts the number of people a horse can pull.

The city currently also imposes some restrictions on the temperature in which horses may work, and does not allow horses to work in temperatures exceeding 98°F (36.7°C). More information here

This is one of the highest maximum allowable temperatures employed in the United States, with other cities such as New York limiting carriage rides to temperatures below 90°F.

What this means in practice is that Savannah’s carriage horses are not permitted to work in conditions that will be excessively dangerous to their health (and it would not be to the advantage of their owners to allow this – horses are a valuable asset) but they are obliged to work in conditions that may be very unpleasant for them.

If you can, before reserving a carriage tour take a look at the horses at the carriage stands if you pass them and at the horses that go by in the street, to see whether they seem calm, well-kept and willing to work.

If you don’t feel good about what you see, strongly consider taking another kind of tour instead. Welfare problems are particularly likely to arise in the summer, when Savannah can get very hot and humid.

Savannah has numerous motorized trolley and bus tours, some with air conditioning, that can provide a comfortable ride. You could also take a bike or segway tour, or a walking tour at a cooler time of the day.

We booked a 50 min tour at 7 pm. We arrived on time and the reception was no very friendly from the organizer. The driver was nice but was hard to understand and would not stop long enough to ask questions or really look around, quite honestly he seemed a little drunk. He brought us back at 7:32 only 32 min in to our tour! We asked for him to take us to our restaurant with the remaining time and he did. The total time including the drop off at the restaurant was about 40 min. Not at all worth the $168 it cost.

My husband and I had taken a private carriage tour before and have always talked about how we enjoyed. So this recent trip back to Savannah, we mentioned to my sister and brother-in-law, that we would be interested in doing a night carriage ride tour again. They were interested as well, so the four of us decided to take the public tour this time and picked the Historic Savannah Carriage Tour. We did the 8 PM tour which we were informed that it's also a ghost tour... yay! We arrived about 10 min prior to the start of the tour at the Hyatt, as instructed. There were already a few carriages waiting, but none were the ones we booked. However, a few mins later, our carriage came. It was the "Picnic" (I found the name of the carriage via their website). Our tour guide told us that the gigantic black horse pulling "the Picnic" was "Batman" lol.... she also said that Batman is very gentle and friendly and that we are welcome to go up and pet him, which we happily complied. Our party of four was joined with another party of three and off we went. The tour was really nice. It was really cold that night, but we were provided with blankets. The tour guid gave us a variety of stories, both historic and ghost ones, as we passed several square and notable buildings. The night is generally quiet and it was nice to hear the stories, mixed with the creak of the carriage and the click click of Batman's hooves.

Really enjoyed our approximately 50 minute tour through historic Savannah. Gave us great ideas of locations to go back and visit after the tour. Our guide very informative, polite and friendly. Thanks for providing great memories for our family of 4 (kids aged 9 and 13)

I thought this was going to be an awful experience from the get-go. After we paid in front the hotel we went to explore the shops before our tour started. When we came back, the girl who we paid was gone! We literally thought we had been scammed. Turns out she had gone into the hotel to use the facilities. After waiting 20 minutes after our tour was supposed to start, our carriage and tour guide FINALLY arrived. Apparently our horse was a so walker. In the end, it ended being just ok. Savannah is beautiful and our tour guide was engaging, but you could tell she was younger and some of her references to social media didn't really resonate with my parents.

Decided to book a private carriage ride with this company since they had a user friendly web site and had good reviews. I was not disappointed. Picked us up at the Hyatt, two doors down from our hotel. Our carriage tour guide was Kelly and she was outstanding. Highly recommend her! Very entertaining and knowledgable but not over the top. Very good job! It was a perfect time (1pm on Sunday). Recommend a hat and or suntan lotion for bright sunny day I got a little burned though! Overall great experience and would highly recommend it!

We came today and took a historical tour with Kellyann and Pepper. We absolutely loved!!! There were two couples and a small child. The air was brisk and we were bundled good as blankets were provided. Pepper was so sweet. Kellyann was extremely informative and entertaining. The 23.00 was well spent.

We made a last minute reservation and everything was perfect. George was a great horse with a humorous personality. (He nehs at one part of the tour every time because he thought his echo was another horse so he has to keep saying hello everytime he passes). Tour guide was great too! Very knowledgeable and super nice. They also let you pet the horses when not on the tour.

Fabulous way to see Savannah and learn a bit of history from friendly guides. Highly, highly recommend! Gorgeous horses.

Photo of Crash F.

The horses are so obviously well cared for, and the tour guides love their city! Informative and fun 45-50 minute tours 364 days a year, weather permitting (the exception is St. Pats of course!), with ghosts tours available after dark! HSCT is the most recommended carriage company in Savannah, you can even buy their tickets through Old Town Trolley at your hotel concierge desk. Parking is available down the block in the Whitaker St garage. Private tours can pick up and drop off in a few convenient locations throughout the historic district. All in all, the best way to see the city is the way they've been doing it since 1733! Slowvannah by carriage is quaint and romantic for couples! We wouldn't do it any other way, and we send all our friends who visit to HSCT... one of my coworkers recently proposed on their carriage tour! (She said yes! And they received roses and a gift basket and a "we're engaged" plaque with their names on it!) They do weddings too, and group tours!

My parents were here visiting, so I decided to book a private carriage tour for them. The carriage people were an hour late, they didn't call to let me know they would be late. I had to call and follow up myself, they finally picked up after four tries. When they showed up they were not apologetic. I do not recommend this place. They are unprofessional and will disappoint. One hour late and no apology is simply unacceptable.

Private Tours

Sit back and relax in our ultra-comfortable private carriages and enjoy a tour of the city like no other. This carriage is ideal for couples, but it can comfortably hold up to 6 adults. Since there are no other passengers, you can ask your driver for any type of tour…history, ghost, or even a combination. Of course, if you want a quiet, romantic ride, your driver can simply transport you through the quiet neighborhoods in the beautiful Historic District. Private tours are very popular, therefore, reservations are strongly suggested.

These tours may be customized to suit your particular needs. Bring a picnic basket, a couple bottles of wine, your laughter and your willingness to have a good time!
