Let us make your vacation truly unforgettable as you discover Tobago, a unique and untouched slice of paradise that will stay in your memory forever!

Best day in Tobago!! Our trip was amazing. It was by far the highlight of our trip to Tobago. Booking the trip was very easy and the communication was excellent. Anna reached out to us to find out exactly what we wanted to see and do. It was just my wife and myself and we had two tour guides. Kristen and Jason were awesome. They were both very friendly and patient with us, we never felt rushed to go to the next sight. We got to eat doubles at the street side stand, saw a lot of amazing waterfalls, and played on some amazing crystal clear water beaches. The provided lunch was delicious and got to feed hummingbirds from our hands. I feel like we made new friends today in Tobago! Thank you for everything!!!!

5 star rating

Worth every penny. I booked Island Girls to do an extensive tour of Tobago, and it was the best decision I could have made. David took me all the way up to Charlotteville and back, and on the way we stopped for some incredible doubles and had a lovely plated lunch not too long after. This tour truly felt like a fun excursion with a long time friend. I can’t wait to visit again with friends and family so that they too can experience the beauty of Tobago

memories of Tobago we will never forget it was a blessing to meet David, see and experience Tobago thru his eyes. we were a group of 6, and David made it super easy to customize a 10 hour tour, and everyone in our group loved the tour. he picked us up at the hotel, reviewed the itinerary, and our adventure began. our goal was to see the the whole Island, visit Argyle Falls, go for a swim, have lunch at the Hummingbird sanctuary, and hopefully experience a few hidden gems too. well we certainly weren't disappointed, in terms of what we saw, and throughout the entire tour, David would share his knowledge with us, and answered all of our questions. the van was comfortable, it was well stocked with water and rum puncheon, and the lunch we had was Michelin star worthy, with hummingbirds flying by ..... throughout the day, David took pictures and videos, which he shared with us and next time we go to Tobago, or Trinidad, we can hopefully book another tour with David.

Dawn to Dusk chasing waterfalls in Tobago This tour was absolutely amazing. I requested a waterfall, nature, hiking tour and that's exactly what I got. David from Island Girl Tours was a wealth of knowledge and kept the tour very interesting and informative. Chased 6 waterfalls, had lunch with hummingbirds, walked in a mangrove and hiked through a lush green forest, ended my 12 hr day at the beach with a beautiful sunset. Food, snacks and drinks were all included on my tour and as a solo female traveller I felt very safe and secure. I would highly recommend touring with David aka (the best barefoot tour guide) from Island Girl Tours, I left Tobago with a full heart.

Experiencing Tobago with the Best Tour Guides From our first contact with David through the entire tour it was an amazing experience. David made sure to get details about our group and worked with us to make this a one of a kind experience. He provided details about the day and listened to our input on what we wanted to experience. As a bonus for the day we were joined by his lovely wife Anna and together they provided extensive details about Tobago from many different perspectives. We toured the Argyle waterfall as well as some smaller ones. We saw beautiful beaches and were able to get pictures in multiple places. As a special treat we had lunch in the rainforest surrounded by hummingbirds at Shurlands Nature Park. Great meal in amazing surroundings. David and Anna are excellent guides and they made us feel more like family than just some tourist. We give this tour 5+ stars.

Tobago touring & sightseeing — coast to coast

One of the advantages of holidaying on a small island is that incredible experiences of every kind are in easy reach. From landmarks that whisper of the island’s complex history (it changed hands some 31 times in colonial days) to thrilling eco escapes and adventures by land or sea, the biggest challenge you’ll face is what to choose in the time you have

Tobago tours & adventures by land & by sea

For eco tours and adventures, book a tour with a registered tour operator or guide. For easy day trips and sightseeing , hire a tour guide/operator, or, if you feel confident on the road, rent a vehicle and go exploring on your own. Here are some of our favourite experiences for the most casual to the most intrepid explorers! (See our Beaches section and Eco escapes sections .)

Getting started — sightseeing tips & tricks

  • Permits are needed for some locations and activities (like camping and turtle-watching ); any reputable guide or tour operator can arrange these
  • Don’t attempt a long hike or eco-adventure without a reputable, certified guide : it’s easy to get lost or have an accident
  • Natural hazards: snakebites and scorpion stings are rare; the biggest natural danger is the Portuguese Man-o’-War, and the sap and fruit of the manchineel tree (most common on beaches). Seek local advice on whether these are present
  • Clothing & accessories: wear long trousers for lengthy bush treks and never wear open-toed sandals. Comfortable shoes with good grip are recommended. Take a little knapsack with a change of clothes, socks and something to eat, stored in a waterproof bag. If you carry a camera that’s not waterproof, you’ll want to keep it here too. Avoid wearing black: it attracts mosquitoes and, if you’re in the open, soaks up the heat
  • Keep Tobago clean: don’t discard your rubbish in waterways and in the outdoors. This can cause flooding and environmental pollution.

Tobago’s natural history

Once joined to the South American mainland, Tobago has inherited a continental legacy of flora, fauna and topography. The island’s small size offers easy access to its range of natural features: the flat, undulating, coral-based southwest with its white-sand beaches; the coral-crusted rock formations of the north; the tropical rainforest reserve of the Main Ridge, with its waterfalls , rivers and streams; the swampland and mangroves close to the ocean; and islands like Little Tobago off the north coast . Offshore, a variety of reef types include the shallow Buccoo Reef, and the deep reefs off the northeast.

Biodiversity in a nutshell

Tobago has an incredible degree of biodiversity for its small size. Its flora and fauna include:

  • 210 recorded bird species
  • 133 species of butterflies (including the impressive blue emperor)
  • 80+ species of tropical reef fish
  • 25 species of snake (none of them poisonous)
  • 44 species of coral
  • 17 species of bats
  • 14 species of frog
  • 12 species of mammals
  • 5 species of marine turtles (including the endangered giant leatherback)
  • 6 species of lizard.

Did you know?

Tobago has won many awards as a top destination for eco-tourism , including four World Travel Awards (two for being the world’s leading eco-tourism destination).

Round-the-island tour

If you start early and hand-pick your stops, you can tour the entire island in a day. Check out our collection of favourite sites and attractions below to help you choose. A vehicle with 4WD would be ideal, but in the drier months a two-wheel drive should be adequate once you don’t intend to go off-road.

If you start in Crown Point or Shirvan Road, head north, where you’ll soon come upon the bucolic fishing villages along the Caribbean coast , the calmer side of Tobago. The road takes you from the southwest’s undulating limestone terrain to mountainous hard rock formations along the Main Ridge forest reserve . Magical Charlotteville occupies the northern tip, before the road curves back around to the more rugged Windward coast .

Speyside is the jewel of the northeast, the island’s diving Mecca; Goat Island and Little Tobago lie offshore. Jemma’s Treehouse is a popular place to stop for lunch on a round-the-island tour, while Argyle Falls is an easy hike and cool-down before the home stretch. The Windward Road then snakes southwards along the east coast back to Scarborough , Lowlands, and back to Crown Point. As a bonus, if you’re visiting during turtle nesting season, you can arrange to go turtle-watching in the evening.

Popular tour types

Tour operators offer tours that specialise in bird-watching , turtle-watching, snorkelling, diving, hiking and waterfalls, stand-up-paddling, mountain biking , sunset cruises, or coastal and round-the-island tours by land and sea. Some will let you customise your tour for a bit of everything.

Stuff of literary legend

It’s almost certain that Daniel Defoe used Tobago as the basis for the island in his classic novel Robinson Crusoe ; some claim Robert Louis Stevenson did the same for Treasure Island .

Leeward/Caribbean coast

  • Fort Milford: a perfect spot for enjoying a Tobago sunset overlooking the Leeward coast; only a few cannon and walls remain
  • Kimme Museum (The Castle): the late German-born sculptor Luise Kimme produced arresting larger-than-life wood and bronze sculptures inspired by local culture. Fellow sculptor Dunieski Lora Pileta now manages and works in the museum/atelier. Reservations are required. 639-0257, luisekimme.com.
  • Fort Bennett: a beautiful lookout point over Stonehaven Bay, complete with a little pavilion and small garden
  • Buccoo Reef & Nylon Pool : a must on any visit to Tobago, and suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Stretching from Pigeon Point to Buccoo Bay, an arc of five reef flats (the largest in Tobago), separated by channels, is home to some 40 species of coral. The Nylon Pool is a warm, metre-deep sandbar in the lagoon. Glass-bottom boat tours typically depart Pigeon Point and Store Bay twice daily
  • Bioluminescence in Bon Accord: in Bon Accord Lagoon, the water lights up. The glowing blue-green light is caused by millions of phytoplankton which emit flashes of light to startle predators as they pass by. Tip: jump in and watch your starry outline light up the water. Stand Up Paddle Tobago offers tours
  • The Grafton Caledonia Wildlife Bird Sanctuary : this former cocoa plantation is now a nature centre complete with winding trails frequented by the “king of the woods”, or motmot. A small Visitors’ Centre at the Copra House provides documentation on wildlife and a brief history of the Sanctuary. Twice daily feedings (the second at 4pm) guarantee excellent bird sightings
  • Plymouth: the Courlander Monument is a striking sculpture commemorating 17th-century settlers from Courland (now part of Latvia). Also visit Fort James and the Mystery Tombstone with its cryptic inscription: “She was a mother without knowing it, and a wife without letting her husband know it, except by her kind indulgences to him.”
  • Adventure Farm & Nature Reserve: a haven for naturalists and bird watchers. When owner Ean MacKay rings a bell, the air hums with the sound of wings as dozens of hummingbirds, tanagers and bananaquits swoop in to feed on fruits and sugared water. A trained guide dog can take you on a tour among the trails, or you can take a walk down to the tilapia pond. Enjoy fresh fruit juices made from whatever is in season — cherry, soursop, mango, pawpaw, guava. There are guesthouses and other amenities on site
  • Cuffie River Nature Retreat: in the mountains of Moriah, just off the western end of the Main Ridge, this world-class bird-watching locale offers accommodation and nature tours
  • Main Ridge Forest Reserve: tours typically start at Gilpin Trace, and can be anything from a short and gentle 45-minute hike to an accessible waterfall, to an entire day into the interior. Other popular treks are the Atlantic, Blue Copper and Nilpig trails. In addition to hiking and bird-watching, the Main Ridge is also popular for mountain bikers
  • Flagstaff Hill: at the northern tip of Tobago, off the North Coast Road, this former WWII American military lookout and radio tower offers panoramic views, encompassing the St Giles Islands and Charlotteville.
  • The Buccoo Reef/Bon Accord Lagoon Complex is the island’s first Ramsar Site , recognised as a wetland of international importance. Buccoo Reef was once rated by legendary French oceanographer and explorer Jacques Cousteau as the third most spectacular reef in the world. Plans were announced in 2015 for an underwater sculpture park.
  • The 14,000 acres of the Main Ridge (rising to 876m/1,890ft) encompasses the oldest protected rainforest in the western hemisphere . It became a reserve in 1776.

Fact or fiction?

The Nylon Pool’s name is said to have come from Princess Margaret, who claimed the water was as clear as her nylon stockings. We’ll also bet money that when you take a tour to Buccoo Reef and the Nylon Pool, your tour guide will tell you tales about the power of the waters to keep couples in love forever, to help you find your soul mate, and to heal the sick. Which certainly can’t hurt, can it?

Six levels, each having a pool, make Argyle Waterfall a delight. The trail passes through a wonderland of wild orchids and majestic trees. Courtesy The Division of Tourism and Transportation

Atlantic/Windward coast

  • Little Tobago (Bird of Paradise Island): both a land and a sea adventure. Just 2km sq. (1.2 sq. miles), this is a trekker’s and bird watcher’s idyll. Once a haven for imported Birds of Paradise from New Guinea, which were wiped out by hurricanes, the island is now a bird sanctuary. Glass-bottom boat tours depart Blue Waters Inn, Speyside, twice daily
  • Argyle Falls: between Roxborough and Belle Garden; a small admission fee paid at the main office gains you access (and water-proof boots, if you like) to the three levels of this Main Ridge waterfall. The top of the falls is high, with the challenging climb rewarded by three pools of deliciously cold, flowing water. This is a great activity for the entire family. Certified guides offer bird-watching and other specialised tours
  • Tobago Cocoa Estate: near Roxborough, this is a working cocoa plantation and heritage park owned by Duane Dove, producing award-winning chocolate . There’s free chocolate at the end, and a chance to buy more
  • Genesis Nature Park & Art Gallery: Michael Spencer opens his home and garden to visitors. He’ll introduce you to his capuchin monkeys, boa constrictors, caiman and cocrico, just to name a few. There’s a small entrance fee
  • Fort King George & Tobago Museum: once an important site for the strategic defence of the island, the fort offers a beautiful view of the harbour, the capital, Bacolet and up the Windward coast from 140m (460ft) above sea level. The site includes the old military cemetery, chapel and cell-block. The Tobago Museum has displays of Amerindian artefacts, colonial relics, military memorabilia and fossils from Tobago’s distant past
  • Scarborough Botanical Gardens: majestic trees, captivating views, and a chance to relax among brilliant flambouyants, silk cotton trees, and avenues of royal palms.

  • by Martina Kokesova
  • March 19, 2020 May 3, 2024

Tobago is not like the other Caribbean Islands. While much of the Caribbean has been lost to development, Tobago remains refreshingly untouched by mass tourism . This tiny tropical gem stubbornly resists change , and only a handful of the all-inclusive resorts occupy its land. It’s a perfect place for a quiet Caribbean escape, where locals welcome you as friends rather than just a walking dollar. Let’s dive into the best thing to do in Tobago and unlock the secrets of this beautiful island.

Tobago attractions

Forget fancy restaurants and glitzy shopping malls – this sleepy island is more authentic. This isn’t the place for spring breakers or hordes of tourists sunbathing on sun loungers.

2. Buccoo Reef

things to do in Tobago: Did you know the Buccoo Reef is one of the island's three largest coral reef marine ecosystems? That’s why taking a glass-bottom tour from the Pigeon Point Jetty of Store Bay is one of the best things to do in Tobago.

FUN FACT : Coral Reefs protect approximately 90% of the coastline shoreline of Tobago.

If you want to take your Pigeon Point experience to the next level (and trust us, you do) – hop on a glass-bottom tour to the Buccoo Reef . This protective marine park , located offshore of Pigeon Point, is one of the most famous Tobago attractions. Now, why is it such a sensation, you ask? Well, hold onto your snorkel because we’re about to dive into it!

Did you know the Buccoo Reef is one of the three largest coral reef marine ecosystems in Tobago? This underwater kingdom spans an area of 7 square kilometres . In fact, it’s nearly as expansive as the world-famous Palace of Versailles and its gardens. Imagine five majestic reef flats standing tall, reaching up to 25 metres (82 ft) in height. It’s like the Grand Canyon of the sea but with more colourful characters!

But wait, there’s more! The Bucco Reef is not just a pretty face. This underwater wonderland receives freshwater and nutrients from the mighty Orinoco River (one of South America’s longest rivers). As you snorkel through its clear waters, you will meet up with approximately 119 fish species . And the fantastic part? You don’t even need diving equipment.

That’s why taking a glass-bottom tour from the Pigeon Point Jetty of Store Bay is one of the best things to do in Tobago .

  • The only way to reach the Bucco Reef is with a glass-bottom tour. Fortunately, several companies offer daily excursions to the Bucco Reef. The price for a tour starts from USD 57 for a 3-hour and 30-minute tour as of February 2024. They also provide lifejackets for your own safety.
  • Keep in mind that reef walking, boat anchoring, storms and coral bleaching have left their mark on the reef.
  • Avoid stepping on corals because these delicate animals are very slow-growing and easily damaged.
  • Remember, always use only biodegradable sunscreen when snorkelling so we can protect reefs for future generations.

things to do in Tobago - Nylon Pool

Nylon Pool, with palm-fringed Pigeon Point in the background, is so gorgeous that you will never want to leave this stunning lagoon! It’s like nature’s own little jacuzzi right in the heart of the sea. It lies just south of the Bucco Reef, near Pigeon Point.

But wait, it gets better! Nylon Pool is a sandbank steeped in tales of royalty and mystery. Legend has it that the locals named this sandbar after Princess Margaret , who visited the island in 1962. The glamorous British princess pointed out that the water here was as clear as her nylon stockings . And as if that wasn’t enough – rumour has it that Nylon Pool possesses mystical powers . The locals say the water in Nylon Pool has supernatural powers . It grants eternal youth to those brave enough to swim in its waters. So, forget your skincare routine; just pack your swimsuit and head to Nylon Pool instead!

Nylon Pool, with its waist-deep waters, is one of the most popular Tobago attractions . You cannot swim here or come on a kayak – it lies a distance from the shores. The only way to access it is with a boat . A glass-bottomed tour is the ideal way to experience its wonders. Several companies depart to the Buccoo Reef and Nylon Pool, and these tours typically last around 3 hours and 30 minutes. 4. Bioluminescence in Bon Accord Lagoon

After the sunsets and the first stars brighten up the sky, set out for a bioluminescent experience . Ever heard of it? You know, that magical phenomenon where tiny organisms in the water put on a light show in the water? Well, the Bon Accord Lagoon is one of those places where you can see this twinkling wonderland.

But why is this one of the most unique things to do in Tobago , do you ask? The Bon Accord Lagoon is one of the few places in the world where Mother Nature throws the coolest light show ever . Trust us, it’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences you don’t want to miss.

At first, there was only little to see – only dark water on the left and mangroves to the right. But once we dipped our toes in the lagoon, our footprints sparkled with fairy dust. Millions of gloving microorganisms lighted up the water, and suddenly, we were the stars of the show. So, if you are looking for adventurous attractions in Tobago, head to the Bon Accord Lagoon. Trust us, it will be a glowing experience you won’t soon forget !

Join a nighttime bioluminescence tour by kayak or paddleboard with Radical Sports or go by motorboat with Fish Tobago . The approximately 2.5-hour tour starts at Pigeon Point’s North Beach after sunset.

We went on our nighttime bioluminescence tour by boat, and we cannot recommend it enough. After seeing Bon Accord Lagoon, our captain was kind enough to take us also to Nylon Pool. We had a chance to stand in metre-deep water surrounded by all sides of the ocean with stars twinkling overhead. And here is the fantastic part: We had both Nylon Pool and the Bon Accord Lagoon just to ourselves. Tours start from USD 60 per person (as of February 2024).

Before you book this tour, we recommend you find out if the bio is on a cycle for optimal viewing. Here are some glowing tips for you to get the most out of your tour experience:

  • Bioluminescence tends to be more visible during certain times of the year . It is hard to see it after several days of rain or heavy rain during the day.
  • Avoid this tour on a full moon – the best experience is when the sky is dark.
  • Keep an open mind: bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon, which means its intensity varies from night to night. Enjoy this experience regardless of the glow’s brightness.

O no, I’m sorry to hear that. A trip to Barbados and Dominica pretty much sounds like a dream trip. We didn’t have big travel plans for this year, but either way, everything is cancelled now and we are only hoping that a full on lockdown won’t happen in Ireland. Greetings from Ireland ❤️❤️❤️ Aiva

Boat & Sailing Tours

The classic Caribbean ingredients of warm clear waters and secluded bays with fantastic snorkelling make Tobago a great destination for those who yearn for the sea and like to get salty! Tobago is a stunningly beautiful island and few visitors will leave without taking a road tour of the island. However, the perspective from the sea is even more memorable and so we strongly recommend a boat tour to all visitors.

We only list the most established, popular and reliable boat tour operators. There are other operators, but we advise caution. Boats that have been inspected and licensed by the local government can be identified by the registration number on the bow of the boat. Licensed boats will display a registration number starting with the letters ' TL '. Normal fishing boats (generally referred to as pirogues) are not normally insured to carry passengers. They can be identified by a registration starting with ' TF '.

Water Sports in Tobago

The seas around Tobago are no place for weekend sailors. So, you will be unable to hire a motorised, or non-motorised, boat and head off to do your own thing. A few hotels do provide small kayaks, but even here great care must be taken.

The relatively challenging conditions do mean that Tobago is a wonderful playground for those of a more adventurous spirit and who are prepared to do so under the careful eye of instructors who have intimate knowledge of the local water and weather conditions. Due to the inherent risks of all water sports, we are only prepared to list the most professional and reliable water sports operators in Tobago. It would be irresponsible of us to list or recommend unlicensed, uninsured jet ski operators and similar.

Sports Fishing in Tobago

Tobago rivals any Caribbean location for both the quantity and range of game fish caught on a regular basis. Variety is the name of the game and game fishers are highly unlikely to find interest waning, whether fishing inshore or off.

Fishing Charters & Tours

Grand slam fishing charters.

For some years, Kester Herbert of Grand Slam Fishing Charters has been acknowledged as Tobago's number one choice for inshore, river, mud flats and fly-fishing. He has also been a serious contender for the top title in offshore game fishing for many years, regularly out-fishing the other local game fishing services before they all closed.

Kester is a quiet man with a wealth of experience. He is particularly good for "one-to-one" fishing. He operates a 38ft Bertram Convertible and a smaller custom-built flats boat for inshore fishing. Grand Slam Charters offer big-game offshore fishing, flats fishing, jig fishing, wreck fishing, fly fishing, reef fishing, shark fishing and also day cruises around the island of Tobago with visits to the most popular beaches and Little Tobago island.

Offshore Game Fishing

The Tobago coast features deep seas running up onto the continental shelf with clear warm water and abundant feedstock – ideal conditions for good game fishing.

The main offshore fishing season lasts from October to June and during this time anglers will do battle with some of the world's most exciting game fish, including blue marlin, white marlin, swordfish, wahoo, tuna, barracuda, mahi-mahi (the local name for dolphin-fish) and shark.

It is a fascinating sight to see large game fish that have migrated south for the winter chasing the vast schools of small flying fish so prolific in the warm Caribbean waters.

During the peak season around November, wahoo is so plentiful that anglers will be busy from dawn until dusk. Typical catches range between 30 and 65 pounds, but at least half-a-dozen 100-pound wahoo are caught each year.

Large marlin, sometimes estimated to be in the 1200-pound range, are present in the waters at the north-western end of the island, just a couple of miles offshore (between the Sisters Rocks off Bloody Bay and the Giles Islands at the northern end of the island). These huge fish are seldom landed, because they are too large for the gauge of equipment used. Sailfish are also common off the coast of Trinidad and can exceed 100 pounds, although a good catch is more likely to be around 75 pounds.

The annual Tobago International Game Fishing Tournament is held in Charlotteville in each May. The small local game fishing fleet is joined by a much larger fleet that make the 70-mile crossing from the west coast of Trinidad. International anglers who would like to join the boats and take part need to book well in advance.

Sadly, Tobago now offers very little choice of charter game fishing operators. See the Fishing Charters & Tours panel below for details.

Facilities and shelter on most pirogues are non-existent, so a hat, polarizing sunglasses, long-sleeved shirt, gloves, sun block and something to drink are essential and not to be forgotten. Don't necessarily expect to see safety equipment, such as flares, life jackets or VHF radio. This type of equipment is strictly reserved for the specialist fishing charter operators and even there, standards and levels of equipment vary.

The local fishermen don't use rods and reels. Many will not be familiar with the angling techniques or tackle used by visiting anglers. You will need to bring your own gear. If you plan to fish from a boat on a budget, a 20–30lb class outfit, coupled with a multiplier reel holding at least 300yds of mono or braid, is ideal. Most fishermen fish for the pelagic species by trolling 'muppets' (artificial squid) at around 4 or 5 knots. You should take a range of these plastic lures in pink, orange and white, and a few strong plugs (Rapala, Yo-zuri or Storm), as they are difficult to get hold.

If tuna, dolphin or billfish are expected, then a 5-foot mono leader of at least 100lb breaking strain should be used to avoid abrasions from teeth and sharp gill plates which can sever the main line. For barracuda, wahoo, king mackerel and shark, an 80-100lb wire trace is mandatory. Don't try with anything else if these are expected.

A barracuda or wahoo will bite clean through the stoutest mono as if it were cotton thread. Nearly all these species will pull your string harder than you can imagine. Being warm water species, they are always on the move and hungry and when they hit a lure, they strip the reel of line. Everything has teeth, and plenty of them!

Inshore Sports Fishing

Coastal and reef fishing are excellent throughout the year and all around the Tobago coast. The angler will be treated to barracuda, king mackerel, snappers, various groupers, jacks and more. Tarpon, in particular, are likely to give the coastal fisherman a wonderful fight, with typical catches in the 30 to 50-pound range. It is also a distinct advantage, particularly if your family are waiting back at the hotel or villa, that the best fishing area for tarpon is immediately off the north-western coast, between the airport and Plymouth cove – home to most of the island's hotels and villas.

Tarpon, of 40 pounds and above are regularly hooked on fly from the shore between Crown Point and Buccoo. As with most tarpon fishing, hooking a fish and landing it are usually only a few jumps apart. A 1:10 ratio of fish landed to those hooked is a good average. Large flies such as deceivers and streamers all work, with white or white/orange being the choice of the discerning tarpon, especially if the water is murky.

Heavier gear is needed to have any chance of hooking and landing a tarpon. Ideally, a 12-weight outfit with a good reel and an adequate supply of 30lb backing will give you a fighting chance. Hooks need to be needle sharp and any take should be met with several hard 'strip-strikes' to set the hook in the corner of the tarpon's bony mouth.

Tarpon can also be caught, more effectively, on live or dead baits fished on the bottom, or under a float. Dawn or dusk is a good time to try for tarpon, but if you're fishing and a pod of tarpon start busting baitfish, don't hesitate to chuck anything you have at them. The experienced angler may even wish to experience the adventure of night fishing for shark, rays and grouper.

Tobago is a reasonable, but not ideal, destination for the salt-water fly fisher. There is a scarcity of flats, so essential for bonefish. However, the flats at Friendship (between the Crown Point airport and Lowlands) are popular and ideal for bones, snook, snapper and the elusive permit. An eight or nine-weight fly outfit, a medium sized reel with a silky-smooth drag, loaded with a floating line and 8-12lb leader, will tame most of the fish that you will encounter here. The usual bonefish flies will work, but anything with a touch of orange or pink seems to work better than 'natural' representations.

Other popular areas are Plymouth Bay (off the old jetty) and Pigeon Point. Just five minutes sailing from shore, fly fishers can be in the action with what are known locally as 'bonito', but which are actually false albacore.

Using spinning gear (carp rod and fixed spool reel, loaded with 20lb braid) and plugs, jigs or spinners and spoons, from any of the rocks or jetties will tempt almost anything including snook, tarpon, jacks (including pompano), ladyfish, hound fish (garfish), snapper, lizard-fish, small barracuda and even small tuna, if you're fishing into deep water.

Rock fishing is a popular pastime for many Tobagonians and you will regularly see boys and young men practising their skills, using nothing but a simple line and some crabmeat or fish pieces. The Caribbean coast is particularly popular and a good place to try is the rocks on the left side of beautiful Back Bay, between Mt.Irvine and Black Rock. You might catch something wherever you can climb onto rocks on the Caribbean coast. Great care must be taken because the rocks can be very slippery. You must also keep an eye on the tide and the occasional big wave. For tricks and tips, simply ask any of the locals that you will invariably meet on the rocks.

Seine fishing, known locally as pulling seine, has been practised on the beaches of Tobago for more than 150 years. The practise has remained largely unchanged, but is sadly declining due to falling catches and the lack of interest of the younger men.

Despite this, you will still regularly see large groups of local people, plus a few tourists, hauling in the net in the early morning, on the beaches at Mount Irvine Bay, Turtle Beach, Black Rock, Castara, Bloody Bay, Man 'O War Bay, Mount St.George and Goodwood.

Freshwater Fishing

There are very limited opportunities for freshwater fishing in Tobago. The main body of fresh water, Hillsborough Dam, is a nature reserve and angling is not permitted. Apart from that, the lake is inhabited by crocodile-like Cayman, so it's best to steer clear unless you can get a local guide who has permission to access it.

Some of the streams emptying from Hillsborough Dam do contain freshwater mullet and odd-looking minnows and loaches. The pool at the bottom of Argyle Falls is a good example. Nearer to the sea, some species of flounder gain access to the mouths of streams and rivers during periods of exceptional high tides or flood. It might also be possible to find small tarpon or snook in these intermittent estuaries and lightweight fly gear may induce a fish.

The Courland River, near Plymouth, is probably the best place to try for these species.

The great thing about fishing in Tobago is - you never know what to expect next!

Swimming in Tobago

The sea around Tobago is at its calmest and warmest between June and August, but the sea temperature is warm throughout the year. The Atlantic coast is the roughest and will only appeal to the strongest swimmers. The western Caribbean coast is more sheltered.

As anywhere in the world, the seas offshore can be subject to strong currents. Swimming should only be undertaken with great care and never attempted alone. Some beaches display warning flags, with red flags indicating unsafe bathing areas and yellow and white flags indicating safer areas. However, due to their isolated nature, very few beaches on Tobago have lifeguards.

Our ears are not used to constant and repeated immersion and particularly not in warm tropical waters rich in nutrients and teaming with life. To minimise the risk of ear infection, ensure that you thoroughly dry your ears after coming out of the water. Adding a drop or two of olive oil to each ear, morning and evening, can help augment your body's own protection. If you are unfortunate enough to get an infection, any local pharmacy can provide drops that will quickly clear the condition.

While on the beach, keep a lookout for manchineel trees because the fruit and sap are highly poisonous. These attractive trees provide lots of shade and visitors not knowing about them may well decide to use the tree for shade. They grow to over 30 feet and have small bright green leaves with yellow stems. The fruit are like tiny green crab-apples. The sap from the tree causes painful blisters to the skin, and temporary blindness and terrible pain if it gets into the eyes. It is essential not to stand under one of these trees in a rainstorm or even to handle wood from the tree, such as when preparing a barbeque, because even the smoke from the wood can be dangerous. If you do get any sap on your skin, wash it off in the sea as quickly as possible. Manchineel trees have been destroyed on most popular beaches, but can still be found near the beach in many more isolated bays.

Swimming in Tobago

Please only use biodegradable suntan oil as it is much less damaging to the environment. Just think of the effects of all the tourist who visit Tobago slapping oil all over themselves and then dashing into the sea, effectively washing a large part of the oil off. It must be like a small tanker running aground. A year's slick of suntan oil can potentially cause a lot of damage to the reefs, so please, please use biodegradable suntan oil.

One final note: nude and topless sunbathing is illegal in Tobago. Many locals find this practice highly offensive and visitors who disrespect their feelings are likely to find themselves wasting good sunbathing time chatting to the local constabulary. Please also remember to cover-up when leaving the beach.

Snorkelling in Tobago

Snorkelling, or snorkeling as our North American cousins would say, is one of the most popular activities for visitors to Tobago. This is hardly surprising, considering that Tobago has some of the best coral reefs in the Caribbean. The island's shallow reefs are ideal for visitors who want to experience the magical underwater landscape. The experience of snorkelling may lead you on to SCUBA diving, but basic snorkelling requires little more than that you are a fairly fit, competent swimmer.

As you drift over a coral field, you will see a world full of colour and movement. Coral reefs are one of the most diverse environments in the world. Multi-hued fish dart amongst the coral heads, feeding on plants, algae and each other. Crustaceans and invertebrates plod along the bottom. Soft corals, sea fans and sponges flutter in the currents.

Although the hard corals that form the structure of a reef can look like lifeless coloured rocks, they are actually living creatures. Inside the calcium 'rock' live thousands of tiny coral polyps – jelly-like creatures that usually show themselves only at night when they feed. The colour comes from the algae that live with the reef in a symbiotic relationship.

Reef fish come in an amazing variety of colours and shapes, like the tube-like trumpet fish and the disk-shaped butterfly and angel fish. Many are easy to spot with their bright neon colours, but others are disguised and hard to distinguish from the reef. Many are solitary; others travel in schools, such as the clouds of yellowtail snappers or blue tangs that swarm over the reefs. To see these wonders, just hover over a coral patch, keep still and wait for the shy creatures to show themselves.

Once you are comfortable on the surface, you will be ready to try free diving. Take a deep breath and swim down a few feet to examine the reef and its residents more closely. Make a game of finding the many camouflaged creatures that look like part of the reef. Peek, but do not poke, into small holes to look for the wary animals, such as the red squirrel fish, that like to stay hidden.

For more information about Tobago's magical undersea world, we recommend that you check out the articles and photos in our main Diving feature, which includes a fascinating article about Tobago's Reefs by Dr Owen Day of the Buccoo Reef Trust .

Snorkelling in Tobago

Snorkelling Equipment

To go snorkelling, you need little more than a mask, a snorkel tube and a set of fins (flippers). You can buy or rent these locally and many hotels, apartments and villas have snorkelling equipment for guests borrow. However, your ability and enjoyment of the sport is highly dependent upon the condition and fit of the equipment. An uncomfortable, badly fitting, mask or fins can ruin the experience. The only way to guarantee a the best fit, and your own enjoyment, is to accept the initial cost hit of buying your own equipment. Although fins are bulky, they are flat and will easily fit in the top or bottom of a suitcase, so are less problematic to pack than you might think.

You can buy snorkelling equipment locally in Tobago *, but the choice is limited. Having said that, very few of us live close to a major dive/snorkelling store and it's not something you can do by mail order. When choosing equipment, you should bear the following points in mind:

The mask is the single most important part of kit. Nothing will spoil your enjoyment more than a badly-fitting, leaking mask, or one that is scratched and blurred. You should try on several masks and find one that fits your face comfortably, with the skirt forming a perfect seal. Masks with silicone skirts are more expensive, but give the best, most comfortable fit. Ensure that the mask has got a tempered glass safety lens, not a cheap plastic mask. If you wear prescription eyeglasses, you may also want to get a prescription mask. Gentlemen (or ladies) with heavy beards or moustaches, or strong 'designer stubble', might find it difficult or even impossible to get an effective seal. In some case you might need to smother your facial hair with Vaseline to create a watertight seal.

The fins should fit your feet as comfortably as a pair of shoes. The 'closed heel' (also known as 'shoe' type) fin is probably best for snorkelling. Do not settle for fins that are too small or too big because this will only hinder your swimming and will be uncomfortable or even painful. The fins should be a snug fit and allow you to wiggle your toes. If they're too slack, they will come off too easily. If you buy your fins in a colder climate than Tobago, remember that your feet are likely to swell a little in the higher temperatures of the tropics. If you plan to wear booties, you must try the fins on while wearing them.

The optimum length of a snorkel is 30cm. A number of different designs and varieties are available, but the basic function of a snorkel is to enable you to breathe easily at the surface without raising your head from the water. We would recommend a 'purge' snorkel because these make it easy to clear water from the tube.

A 'must have' is a protective case for your mask and a mesh drawstring bag in which you can carry all your snorkelling gear.

Some people like to wear a snorkelling vest, which act as a flotation device. These should be mandatory for children.

* Tobago's best outlet for those wishing to buy snorkelling equipment is Ocean Experience in Pigeon Point Road. If you wish to hire equipment, we recommend that you check our dive shop listings and try a service near your Tobago hotel or accommodation.

Snorkelling Equipment Care

Whether you have taken your own equipment or borrowed or rented it, care of your mask, snorkel and fins is vital. The first priority is to thoroughly soak the equipment in fresh water after every use. If you don't, the salt crystals in the sea water will dry and harden causing any metal parts to rust and straps and fabrics to stiffen and crack. Sand and salt crystals act as an abrasive and will quickly ruin clear visibility of your mask. Masks should always be kept in their protective case when not in use to prevent the face from becoming scratched. Fins should be stored flat and never standing upright on their tips. If you have snorkelled before you will know that lens fogging can be a frequent problem. There are a variety of products that promise to keep a snorkel mask clean, but saliva is just as effective. Before entering the water rub some of your own saliva on the inside of the lens and rinse it with sea water. If you do this before the mask gets wet, you should have a fog-free lens for at least half hour or more.

Snorkelling Safety

As long as common sense is applied, snorkelling is perfectly safe. However, we do recommend that all snorkelers heed the following advice:

  • Always swim within your capabilities. Unless you're particularly fit, you could tire easily and have difficulty returning to shore. Don't forget the effects of tides and currents.
  • Never swim or snorkel alone. Only snorkel with a 'buddy' so that you can help each other if either gets into difficulty.
  • Practice your skills in shallow water. Learn how to clear water from your snorkel and put your mask on while treading water.
  • Always apply a high-factor sun lotion and reapply it according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
  • Wear a dark T-shirt for additional protection from the sun. Light coloured t-shirts give very little protection when wet and might actually increase the intensity of the burn. Your back, shoulders and legs are going to take the brunt of the sun.
  • Watch out for 'nasties'. Sea urchins are a particular hazard to snorkelers in shallow water, as are jellyfish. The small translucent jellyfish do not sting.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, unless you want to get thumped by the waves. Do not underestimate the effect of being 'downed' by strong breaking surf. Duck or dive under breaking waves before they reach you, to avoid suffering their full force.
  • Be particularly careful of the effects of surge (waves) or the tide and current when swimming near rocks and headlands. Being thrust onto coral-encrusted rocks can cause serious and intensely painful injuries.
  • Never swim against the current – swim diagonally across it.
  • Do not go snorkelling (or swimming) after a heavy meal. Allow at least an hour to avoid any risk of getting of cramps.

Conservation of Tobago's Reefs

  • Like other marine environments, Tobago's reefs are an extremely delicate ecosystem. It takes only seconds for an uncaring, ignorant swimmer to ruin hundreds of years of natural growth.
  • Please, please observe the golden rule – LOOK BUT DON'T TOUCH. A single touch can kill or damage coral that has taken hundreds of years to grow. Also remember that even a tiny coral cut can be highly infectious and painful and ruin several days of your holiday.
  • Maintain a comfortable distance from the reef, taking into account surge or currents that might force you closer.
  • Know where your fins are. Keep leg kicking to the minimum and ensure that you do not kick up sand which can smother tiny organisms.
  • Never touch, handle or feed marine life except under expert guidance.
  • Never chase or try to ride marine life.
  • Do NOT use gloves or reef shoes.
  • Never discard rubbish – plastics, in particular, can smother and kill marine life. Turtles can mistake plastic bags for jellyfish and eat them.
  • Use biodegradable suntan lotion. The effect of thousands of visitors jumping into the sea covered in oil-based lotion is like a tanker running aground.

Tobago Snorkelling Sites

This table lists all major snorkelling sites in Tobago in a clockwise direction around the island, starting from Crown Point. Each site has been graded on a scale of 1 to 5 to give a general indication of the quality of the snorkelling at that point; high scores offering a better snorkeling experience. Please take great care. Some of the sites mentioned are only suitable for experienced fit swimmers. Snorkelling should only be attempted when sea conditions are calm.

Snorkelling Tours in Tobago

Almost all of the boat tours listed in the opening Boat Tours of this set of articles offer snorkelling as a main feature of the tour. All these operators provide masks and fins, but there is no guarantee that you will find a perfect fit or that the equipment will be in pristine condition. For the very optimum snorkelling experience, you do really need your own snorkel kit.

Boat Owners & Yachties

Being upwind and east of the main chain of Antilles islands, most private yachts miss Tobago. However as other Caribbean islands get busier, more and more yachts make the trip across to Tobago, often on their way to Trinidad's excellent sheltered outhaul facilities.

Unlike other Caribbean islands, you can't clear in or out with Customs &anp; Immigration at the local airport. This would make a lot of sense, because the main safe yachting anchorages are in Store Bay and Pigeon Point, only a few minutes' walk from the airport! However, the powers-that-be insist that you beat, or motor, to windward eight miles upwind and up-current, to the capital Scarborough. The alternative is Charlotteville, at the northern end of Tobago.

Scarborough is on the windward side and not particularly where you want to be. The ferry generally comes in to Scarborough harbour twice a day, so it is important to keep tucked as far as possible inside the harbour to avoid the effect of powerful bow thrusters!

Most of the bays on the north coast offer good daytime anchorages. The most scenic of these is Englishman's Bay, where the rainforest comes right down to the water's edge. However, all these anchorages on the north coast can become untenable if there is a northerly storm or low-pressure depression that invariably sends uncomfortable swells, which also increase surf on the beach and restrict visibility for divers and snorkelers alike. Store Bay and Mt.Irvine Bay offer the most suitable overnight anchorage.

Sadly, Tobago lacks most of the basic facilities for servicing yachties. The only practical fuel stations are located in Bon Accord (near Store Bay) and on Charlotteville's sea front.

You can purchase water at Pigeon Point Jetty (ask at the office), and can even go alongside the jetty if you draw less than 4ft. It has been possible to get fuel and water in Scarborough Port. However, it is easier to ask at the Coast Guard jetty for water if the need arises.

LPG is widely available at gas stations, as is ice, but if you have a different fitting go straight to the NP Terminal behind the airport to have your bottle filled. Party Ice bags are widely distributed around the island in mini markets and some Rum Shops.

All the various yacht services are widely (and efficiently) available at numerous locations in Chaguaramas Bay in Trinidad. Services are limited, but Store Bay Marine Services [email] located in Pigeon Point Road offer various services, include water, engine repair, canvas work, marine electronics and commercial diving, together with laundry and internet facilities (using long range Wi-Fi).

Sailing in Tobago

Weather & Sailing Conditions Around Tobago

During Tobago's dry season, from December to May, the Trade Winds settle generally into the north-east at a consistent force 4-5. During the rainy 'hurricane' seasons, from June to November, the winds are generally a lighter force 1-3 and invariably come from the east to south-east. The exceptions are when tropical waves, depressions or storms are about, in which case seafarers are advised to stay firmly onshore, or at a safe anchorage. Most other Caribbean islands tend to run north/south. Tobago, on the other hand, runs north-east/south-west. It can therefore sometimes give the impression of having two windward sides!

Being located so far south, the Guyanese Current that moves north-westerly around the continent of South America, and then into the Caribbean Sea to form the Gulf Stream, hits Tobago head on, in the Speyside area, at 4-6 knots. The current then splits into two streams, passing Tobago to the north and the south. The entire Speyside area is treacherous, and sailing should not be attempted unless you are a professional captain. It has experienced numerous wrecks and dive accidents over the years. However, it is also an area of amazing natural underwater beauty, as the fertile currents feed a huge array of marine life.

Tobago is right on the southerly edge of the hurricane belt, and is regarded as a safe haven by most insurance companies. The incidence of hurricanes is about one in every 50-100 years. Trinidad, just 22 miles to the south, has never had a hurricane. Tobago has one excellent hurricane hole – the Bon Accord Lagoon – situated inside the Buccoo reef. The only channel giving access is less than 4 feet deep, but boats drawing up to 6 feet can scrape their way in on a rising high tide.

Island tours, turtle watching.

sea tours in tobago

USD 50 p/person

Between the months of March and September giant leatherback turtles come ashore to nest each year to Tobago’s immaculate coastlines.

Journeying vast distances across oceans, they find their way back to the precise beach where they were born to lay their eggs at common nesting sites, namely Turtle Beach, Grafton Bay and Stone Haven Bay.

What to expect

The female turtle climbs up the beach to find a suitable nesting site above the tide line and creates a “body pit” through shifting the sand with her powerful flippers, before using her hind flippers to excavate a deeper egg chamber.

The turtle lays between 80 to 100 eggs, which she covers and camouflages with sand to protect it from predators before making her way back down to the ocean.

This process takes place during the night and can take up to two hours.

A female will typically return to the same beach to lay eggs up to nine times during one breeding season.

6 weeks after the eggs are laid it is possible to witness the minuscule turtle hatchlings emerge from the sand and frantically scurry towards the safety of the ocean.

Turtle watching guidelines Many of the turtle species found on Tobago are critically endangered, as well as being sensitive to even the slightest of disturbances. As such, its vitally important that those taking part in turtle watching, and visitors to the island more generally, familiarise themselves with some basic guidelines that will both ensure the wellbeing of the turtles as well as maximise the experience of all those involved.

Guides will always be on hand to advise about rules and appropriate behaviour:

- Lights:

Turtles are disoriented by bright lights.

Flashlights must be equipped with red L.E.D bulbs or filters and only shone from behind the turtle at key times.

Refrain from pointing a light in a turtle’s face or directly at hatchlings.

Flashlights are not necessary, and it's best to allow your eyes to adjust to the ambient light levels. - Photography:

Flash photography is prohibited as this blinds turtles and can impede their return to sea.

Infrared photography and low light video recordings are acceptable, but should be kept to a minimum. - Noise and activity:

Turtles are deterred by noise, so aim to keep as quiet as possible.

Keep any movement to a bare minimum, be sure to stay behind the turtle at all times and keep at a distance of around 20 metres whilst the turtle is digging her nest. Once the turtle has started laying you may be permitted to move closer to catch a glimpse of the eggs. - Litter:

Take your garbage with you as any debris left on the beach or floating in the sea can choke or trap hatchlings. - Avoid damaging nests through activities such as driving on beaches, staking umbrellas into the sand, or building sandcastles above the high water mark. Nests are usually well camouflaged and eggs can easily be crushed in these ways. - Hatchlings: Baby turtles are tiny and easy to tread on in low light, so watch your step! Although it can be tempting, never touch or help a hatchling on its way towards the ocean.

Protecting Tobago’s turtles for future generations Due to pressures such as coastal development, beach erosion and pollution, the worldwide turtle population is declining at a rapid rate, and it is thought that leatherbacks may become extinct within the next few decades. However, through following the above guidelines and approaching turtle watching with compassion and respect, you are becoming part of the solution towards safeguarding these magnificent creatures.

In Tobago, the Save Our Sea Turtles charity is leading the way in turtle conservation efforts, carrying out valuable work such as monitoring and data collection, anti-poaching patrols, promoting turtle-friendly policies, and spearheading education initiatives.

They also work with tourists, hotels and tour operators to develop and enforce turtle-watching guidelines, train tour guides and help raise awareness about the island’s turtle population. They currently offer guided tours around nesting beaches, as well as volunteer placements related to research and education initiatives. In the near future, the charity is also hoping to expand to offer offshore field trips and overnight camping trips, allowing visitors to gain an even deeper insight into the lives of these inspiring creatures.

Restaurants, food and drink | el camino real reopened after officials determine suspicious package is not a threat, restaurants, food and drink, restaurants, food and drink | ouch celebrate poky, pointy sea creatures at mendocino’s urchin fest, from june 7-16, the festival will fete urchins with nature walks and uni-centric restaurant specials..

The third annual Urchin Fest takes place June 7-16, 2024, in Mendocino County, featuring educational events and restaurant specials.

The festival kicks off June 7 and runs through June 16 with nature walks, a harbor tour of fishing vessels and an “urchin ranch” and many restaurant specials, including one that pairs high-end Japanese whiskey with creamy uni.

Purple sea urchins are ubiquitous off the coast of Northern California. When their numbers get out of control, they can pose a severe threat to kelp forests, which they love to munch. Otherwise, they can be a toothsome addition to all sorts of dishes from pasta to toast to sushi. (Or a pain in your butt — sometimes literally — if you happen to bump into one in the water.)

You can find all the details at Urchinfest.com , but here’s a short list of what’s going on from that site and VisitMendocino.com . Note that while some events are free, others require tickets or fees:

“Take a low-tide seaweed walk at MacKerricher State Park with Josie Iselin, Larry Knowles and Julie Drucker. These artist-educators will share their knowledge and experience in seaweed gathering and give an in-depth understanding of the delicate intertidal ecosystem. Sign up for this morning walk from 7:00-9:30 a.m.” Details: Capacity: 25. Fee: $35 (includes Seaweed Science Social in the afternoon).

“DIVE INTO SCIENCE FIELD SESSIONS WITH REEF CHECK. Reef Check trains citizen science divers to conduct long-term monitoring surveys of Kelp Forests. Join us at Caspar Beach June 8-9th to watch our team at work! We will also be working with our most recent Dive into Science Open Water graduates to provide proficiency dives so they continue their training and become Reef Check divers! Come chat with us and our volunteers! Our divers are happy to discuss everything kelp and how you can get involved with Reef Check. No sign-ups are necessary—just come and see us in action!” Details: 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Caspar State Beach.

“OPEN HOUSE AT THE URCHIN RANCH. Visit the Noyo Center Marine Field Station in Noyo Harbor and learn about the organization’s land-based urchin aquaculture system, or urchin ranch. While you are there, see the underwater photo and video installation featuring the work of Abbey Dias and Patrick Webster, taste wild and farmed uni, and learn more about the fascinating purple urchin from Noyo Center educators.” Details: 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Noyo Center Marine Field Station, 32430 N. Harbor Drive, Fort Bragg. Donations welcome.

“Learn about fine Japanese whiskey from expert Jonathan Darrow as he pairs whiskeys with a multicourse, uni-centric meal prepared by Little River Inn’s Chefs Joe Perez and Marc Dym. Make it a true getaway with a two-night stay at the always delightful Little River Inn.”

“Join the Noyo Harbor staff for a walking tour of Noyo Harbor from 10 .m.-noon. Learn about the different fisheries and vessels that operate out of the marina and how a healthy kelp forest relates to healthy fisheries and thus healthy communities.” Details: 10 a.m.-noon at Noyo Harbor High Dock.

Throughout:

“UNI ADVENTURES. A variety of Mendocino restaurants are offering special Uni menus during this timeframe, from Uni Baked Oysters to Salmon with Champagne and Sea Urchin Beurre Blanc; various prices. Pull a seat up at Harbor House Inn, Inn at Newport Ranch, KW Saltwater Café, Noyo Harbor Inn, Izakaya Gama, SIBO and Wickson Restaurant.”

I've worked on cruise ships for years. I always see passengers make these 13 mistakes.

  • I've worked on cruise ships for over six years, so I've seen many passengers make mistakes.
  • Missing the ship at port or booking excursions with outside operators could be costly and risky.
  • If you don't set your phone to airplane mode, you may rack up overseas roaming charges.

Insider Today

After over six years working on ships for a major cruise line , I've witnessed tons of travel blunders that prevent guests from having the best possible experience.

Here are 13 common mistakes I see travelers make:

Not reading the fine print can lead to conduct issues later

Passengers usually come on the ship excited for a good time, and for many, this involves a drinks package . And with lots of drinks can come rowdiness.

I've come across a few troublemakers who had no idea that smashing Champagne glasses in the hot tub could get you booted off the ship.

Every passenger consents to a hefty conduct policy when they book the cruise, so make sure to read through it to know what's prohibited on board.

Make sure to put your phone on airplane mode to avoid expensive roaming charges

Cellular rates at sea can sneak up on you, and you can easily rack up a $500 roaming bill.

Even if you're not actively on your phone, most are still using data, so make sure to put yours on airplane mode to avoid roaming charges.

Really, just turn your phone off unless you're using it to take photos or access the ship's WiFi.

Many passengers don't take advantage of the different dining options on board

I often see passengers eat all three meals at the buffet every day. I know some people just really love the self-serve option, but it surprises me how many guests have no idea what's included with their trip.

Many times, the biggest shock to most first-time cruisers is that the dining room is included on most ships. Yes, this means a sit-down meal where you can order seven appetizers, five entrées, and 12 extra cookies for a midnight snack.

There are also so many spots with free food around most ships, like a pizza station, 24-hour ice-cream machine, and small cafés. Just be aware that specialty dining, like the steak house , might cost extra.

Leaving your room key behind is more of a hassle than you'd expect

It is not just a room key — it's your onboard credit card, ticket on and off the ship, and identification for the week.

Everything is connected to that card, so make sure to set up your information online ahead of time so you can start swiping the moment you get on board.

Security will scan it when you pass through the gangway to know who is on or off the ship, so it's especially important to have it on port days.

If you lose it, report it to the service desk immediately to ensure that no one else spends your money.

Many guests don't know they can bring their own wine on the ship

While many people think no outside alcohol is permitted on the ship, many major cruise lines allow passengers over the age of 21 to bring a bottle or two of wine on boarding day, so you can stop smuggling drinks in empty mouthwash bottles.

Some terminals will even sell wine to boarding travelers. If you buy alcohol in a port, you'll usually have to check it upon reentering the ship, and it'll be delivered to your room on the last night.

Missing the all-aboard time on port days is an expensive mistake

In my years of working cruises, I have seen more than a handful of guests miss the ship.

Although this is a huge fear for most passengers, it usually happens to avid cruisers — people who have been to the port many times before sometimes assume the all-aboard time is always the same.

Related stories

But this time varies by cruise, and it's stated on multiple signs at the exit gangway, in the daily planner, and in the captain's announcement.

Also, always triple-check whether the all-aboard time is based on the ship's clock or the local time.

If you miss the ship, you'll often have to get yourself to the next port, which can be very pricey.

Passengers miss out on discounts by not booking their next cruise while still on the ship

Booking a future vacation while on a ship can get you bigger discounts on cruises , access to new itineraries not open to the general public yet, and a lot of onboard credit.

These booking appointments are usually filled up by the last few days of the cruise, so head there at the beginning of your stay for more deals and no wait.

Booking a tour with an outside operator can be risky

Although it might be a lot cheaper to book your tours independently, it's also a lot riskier.

Excursions booked through the ship are with verified operators. Most cruise lines will wait for the ship's tour to return before leaving the port, even if it's hours late.

But this is not the case if you book on your own, and running through the port to find the ship sailing away is probably not the excursion you're looking for.

Immediately removing the automatic gratuity affects many staff members

On most cruise ships, there is a preset daily gratuity charged per passenger unless it's removed at the guest-services desk.

I see so many people come on board and immediately remove the charge, but this fee is usually split between your housekeeping, dining, and cleaning staff. It is essential to their jobs and affects their livelihoods.

I'd recommend waiting until the end of the cruise to make sure you're happy with the service instead of removing it on day one. You can also increase or decrease the amount instead of cutting it.

Packing prohibited items can lead to a headache

As confident as you are that you can sneak on your portable iron, I seriously advise against packing anything that's not allowed on board.

Security scans your bags on embarkation day, and if a prohibited item — like an iron, a bottle of vodka, or a candle — is found, they will hold your bag.

Your luggage won't be delivered to your door, and you may have to wait several hours until security contacts you, brings you to the holding area to search the bag, and confiscates the item until the end of the cruise.

Prepare your necessary travel documents to avoid trouble at ports

Cruise ships travel all over the world, so check if you need specific visas or documents based on your nationality.

You are responsible for knowing and bringing your own paperwork. If you don't have the right documents, you might not be able to get off at a port or, even worse, be allowed back on the ship.

I saw this happen when traveling to India with many American guests, a handful of whom didn't realize they needed a visa.

Dressing down on formal night can limit your dining options

Even though walking through the promenade in shorts is your choice, many guests aren't aware that there's usually a formal evening on most cruises.

Most passengers don evening gowns and suits on formal nights, and I've met cruisers who wished they would've packed at least one nice item — besides their Margaritaville shirt, of course.

Passengers not formally dressed on this evening usually aren't allowed to eat in the ship's main dining rooms, though the buffet is open to everyone.

It's worth learning the difference between port and starboard

Different announcements will direct passengers to either the port side or starboard side of the ship, so it's best to brush up on the jargon before your vacation.

Port is the left side of the boat and starboard is the right, always configured facing the front of the ship.

Just remember that "port" and "left" are both four letters. You'll thank me later.
